Science and technology profoundly shape the world today. Over the last two centuries, they have become powerful engines of change, accounting for some of the most important forms of human activity, inseparable from social, political and economic life. Analyzing their modes of production, the dynamics of their dissemination, the different forms of their use and opposition to them is a major academic and political challenge.
Science and Technology in Society offers a broad overview of work carried out in France, in the international multi-disciplinary field of Science and Technology Studies (STS), and is the product of a collaboration between some thirty authors. It aims to provide an introduction to this field of research, its development, benefits and the new perspectives that are emerging.
This book presents and discusses studies that are still little-known in France, even though, paradoxically, many researchers from French institutions make decisive contributions to international work in this field.

This book provides a comprehensive and concise introduction of experiments on contemporary issues of language processing and the brain. It covers a wide range of neurolinguistic and neuroscience topics, including but not limited to word recognition, reading acquisition and dyslexia (in typically developed children, foreign language learners, and deaf people), comprehension of sentences and fictional narratives, the interplay of language processing/acquisition with other cognitive domains, and aging of language comprehension and Chinese reading.
This book showcases the significance of empirical studies on language and cognitive processing, particularly those emerging from the Taiwan research community, to illuminate the intricate nature of the language faculty enabled by the sophisticated computations of the brain. This book informs readers of crucial issues in the neurolinguistic literature and advances in neuroimaging technology and provides perspectives inspired by evolution and neuroscience.

Gaia Gianni's All in the Family explores how children shaped the development of pseudo-familial bonds, or fictive kinship, in Roman society during the early imperial period. Previous scholarship on the Roman family has primarily emphasized the patriarchal and nuclear structure of the Roman family, with children often represented as passive actors in a vacuum. Believing this to be an oversimplification of how the Roman family functioned, Gianni in her study focuses on the ways in which Roman families raised children and formed long-term relationships with individuals outside of the nuclear family, such as friends, neighbors, nurses, and caretakers, who gradually became full-fledged members of the family unit. Through a wide variety of literary works, legal documents, and funerary epitaphs for children set up by their families and caregivers, Gianni borrows from modern sociological and anthropological theories to argue that children acted as catalysts or connecting nodes in the creation of fictive kinship with individuals who were not part of the biologically determined family. In addition to illuminating the roles and experiences of these figures, All in the Family reveals how this social network was integrated into the family both in practice and in ideology, presenting a more complex view of the Roman family than the traditional nuclear structure.

Leading scholars of American Jewish experience offer bold historical interpretations that reimagine American Jewish studies
The Future of American Jewish Pasts boldly imagines the next chapters in the study of American Jewish life. Conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic and completed just before the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and ensuing war, this innovative volume gathers leading scholars of American Jewish experience to ask what the future of the study of the American Jewish past holds.
The contributors reconceive traditional approaches to American Jewish life and delve into underexplored topics to present a vision of a rich future for the field of American Jewish studies. Essays on antisemitism, Zionism, liberalism, immigration, feminism, family histories, and more stake out new sources, methods, and interpretations of histories and historiographies. To understand American Jewish life in its complexity and richness, these essays engage multiple disciplines, including history, ethnography, and literary studies. Many showcase comparative or theoretical approaches that illuminate new dimensions of American Jewish studies, and others offer personal reflections to reveal how scholars' own life stories intersect with the questions that animate their scholarship. For students, scholars, and the general public, this interdisciplinary volume provides a tantalizing selection of the freshest approaches to understanding American Jewish life.

Shaping a distinctive Midwestern form of Mexicano identity Mexicanos in Michigan and across the Midwest share a common experience: living as largely invisible outsiders as they struggled to build vibrant communities in places that wanted their labor but not their presence. Brett Olmsted ranges from the 1920s to the 1970s as he analyzes how Mexicanos sought to transcend social, cultural, economic, and political exclusion. Never numerous in any one area, Mexican Americans pursued inclusion via leisure spaces and labor unionism. Activities like celebrations, sports, movies, and music encouraged Mexicanos to claim physical and social space, connect with Michigan's other Mexicano communities, and construct their own sense of identity. Mexicano workers, meanwhile, embraced interethnic union activism to address racism in job placement and promotion. Olmsted also examines how the state's Mexicanos adapted to Michigan's dual economy and found advantages in moving back-and-forth between rural and urban areas. In-depth and innovative, Making Michigan Home spotlights the state's overlooked Mexicanos and their distinctive experiences within the Latina/o/x Studies Midwest.

This book offers eighteen original historical and philosophical essays focused on values in science, scientific pluralism, and pragmatism. These themes have been central in the work of Matthew J. Brown, and the book frames these topics through an engagement with Brown's broadly ranging work on values in science. The themes of this book are integrated and unified in the pragmatic and value-laden ideal of science defended by Professor Brown in his fascinating 2020 book, Science and Moral Imagination. Brown's ideal of moral imagination prescribes that scientists should recognize the contingencies in their work as unforced choices, examine morally salient aspects of these decisions, recognize the various interests of relevant stakeholders, explore and construct alternative options, and exercise fair and warranted value judgments to guide those decisions. The interdisciplinary essays in this volume engage with different aspects of Brown's philosophical research on scientific values as well as his historical research on figures such as John Dewey and Paul K. Feyerabend. With a fresh focus on topics such as moral imagination, inductive risk, and epistemic priority in various socially salient contexts (e.g., artificial intelligence, psychiatry, segregation research), this book is of great interest to a broad audience of researchers working in philosophy of science, philosophy of medicine, history and philosophy of science, and science and technology studies.

This book is about wearable sleep technology. Sleep assessment technologies, or "sleep trackers", that can be used outside of the laboratory are becoming increasingly popular. They are utilized in scientific research, among behavioral sleep medicine clinicians, and by members of the general public who are interested in learning more about their sleep. There are few guidelines currently available to help users discern which device is most suitable for their needs. Bold marketing claims often suggest that devices are more accurate than they are. By understanding the history of how these devices were developed, the limitations of the current proxy measures of sleep, and the inherent bias in validation studies of the most popular devices used today, readers can learn about what to realistically expect from device performance. This book comprehensively explains how sleep trackers work, how they can be evaluated by users, and how they can be used in practice.

This book describes some of the most critical issues in gifted education, i.e., gender inequity concerning giftedness examinations and the boys/girls ratio. The book also discusses the background of the gifted child's family, including their parents' education and number of their siblings. The book's findings are based on quantitative studies concerning 5-15-year-old gifted children participating at the Erika Landau Institute for Gifted and Creative Children and Youths in Tel Aviv, Israel, from 1968 until 2003. It discusses aspects such as the advantages of affirmative action standards in gifted education because girls who score lower than boys on the admission test to a gifted program usually have better social skills, persistence, and fine motor skills and, thus, integrate successfully in a gifted group with boys of higher intelligence. The book's second part addresses Landau's academic work in multiple languages and offers a critique that helps educators and mental health experts build gifted programs.

This handbook presents and describes how to apply the PRISMAS Group Therapy, a brief intervention that combines Affirmative and Schema Therapy for Sexual and Gender Minorities (SGM). PRISMAS is a new therapeutic intervention that builds upon the concepts of Schema Therapy to create a brief group intervention aimed at helping SGM cope with the stress and prejudice they have internalized by living in societies that stigmatize and attack the LGBTQIA+ community. This intervention manual provides a detailed breakdown of the 12 therapeutic sessions in which the intervention is organized, showing practitioners how to conduct it.
The PRISMAS Group Therapy Handbook: A Brief Intervention Integrating Affirmative and Schema Therapy for Sexual and Gender Minorities will be an invaluable resource for psychotherapists, clinical psychologists and other mental health professionals working with Sexual and Gender Minorities.
"While Schema Therapy offers a broad range of applications, there remains a gap in understanding how its principles apply to minority groups, including LGBTQIA+ individuals. Bruno's work in this area is groundbreaking. His research on minority stress and the inner critic (oppressive sociocultural) schema mode sheds light on how societal influences shape individual experiences, schemas, and modes." - Wendy Behary, Former President, The International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST)
"Bruno and Ana present a framework that is both sexual and gender affirming. It resonates across borders by addressing the shared experiences of minority stress, internalized oppression, and systemic barriers faced by SGM communities worldwide. By bridging societal oppression with individual healing, their approach fully leverages the integrative potential of Schema Therapy. Bruno and Ana's work is a gift to the field of psychotherapy." - Xi Liu, Co-Director, SchemXcollective: Integrative Schema Institute Sydney, Australia
The original manuscript of this book was written in Portuguese and translated into English with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

The book addresses the growing interconnectedness between philosophical counseling and traditional psychotherapy. It explores the organic links between core philosophical concepts and theories, and the corresponding problems and theories in psychotherapy. Aleksandar Fatic focuses on the use of modal logic as a foundation for psychotherapy within the proposed Modal Integrative Psychotherapy model. The book functions both as a research work and a manual for the development and application of integrative psychotherapy, viewed through the lens of philosophical counseling and the exploration of the logical underpinnings of psychotherapy as its conceptual foundation.

A comprehensive, evidence-based handbook for using the MMPI-3 in forensic evaluations
Since its release in 2020, the MMPI-3 has become a cornerstone of clinical and forensic assessment. Forensic Mental Health Assessment With the MMPI-3 is an essential, evidence-based resource that explores use of the MMPI-3 in a variety of forensic contexts. In addition to elucidating the test's development and the interpretation of its scales, this comprehensive guide delves into critical forensic issues including admissibility (e.g., Daubert criteria), telehealth assessment, cross-cultural considerations, and response bias.
Dustin B. Wygant and Martin Sellbom draw on contemporary research to discuss the unique challenges of forensic evaluations. Through case analyses, this book illustrates how to interpret and integrate MMPI-3 profiles into clinical and diagnostic impressions, and it addresses common psycholegal questions in criminal (e.g., competency to stand trial, insanity), civil (e.g., disability), and family (e.g., child custody) contexts.
Providing practical insights into real-world MMPI-3 applications, Forensic Mental Health Assessment With the MMPI-3 is an indispensable resource for forensic practitioners and legal professionals.

The first biography of the remarkable historical figure who challenged perceptions of women's experiences in the early American Republic
In 1831 Sister Gertrude Wightt, the directress of Georgetown Academy (now Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School), donned the hat and cape of one of her students and abruptly left the academy and life as a nun. She soon became a fixture on the Washington social scene and an intimate of Dolley Madison.
The Two Worlds of Ann Gertrude Wightt is the first comprehensive biography of the enigmatic Wightt. Drawing from a rich cache of previously overlooked primary sources, the book meticulously explores Wightt's transformation from respected academy directress to celebrated "parlor politician" in the nation's capital. It delves deeply into her innovations in female education, her unprecedented departure from convent life, and her remarkable social reinvention. The author reveals a complex narrative of the opportunities and limitations that Catholic religious life posed for this gifted, ambitious, and socially prominent young woman.
Scholars of American women's history and Catholicism, as well as general readers, will find an illuminating exploration of how one woman navigated and transcended the rigid boundaries of her time. This book also offers a profound window into the intersections of gender, class, and institutional power in nineteenth-century America, resurrecting this forgotten historical figure who challenges our understanding of women's experiences in the early American Republic.

The abortion market was a powerful economic force in American life. Before legalization lowered the cost, one million women each year collectively paid upward of $750 million for abortions. In this illuminating book, Katherine Parkin reveals the strength of a massive consumer market that involved loans, advertising, and travel, as well as the costs associated with the procedure itself.
Laying the foundation for the emergence of a public market that facilitated the buying and selling of abortions, wealthy population control ideologues encouraged positive public discourse on abortion, funded medical studies, and waged legal battles. White, middle- and upper-class women sought out abortions and paid exorbitantly for them. Male entrepreneurs emerged to capitalize on the booming market and profit from the incredible demand. Advertising on billboards and in college newspapers, men profited by providing the phone number, getting kickbacks for delivering patients, and arranging for women's travel to Mexico, Puerto Rico, England, and Japan. Students demanded abortion access and organized when it came at a steep cost, especially to the poorest among them. Abortion providers in Kansas, California, and Washington, D.C. attracted out-of-state consumers, with some women aided by their universities or by medical insurance. Between 1970 and 1973, entrepreneurs, providers, and hundreds of thousands of women seeking to buy abortions headed to New York City, heralded by some as the "abortion capital of the world."
While we may have imagined that securing an abortion was best understood as a hidden, woman-only experience, The Abortion Market reveals the extent to which businesses and businessmen openly selling abortion access shaped the experience of buying abortions for millions of women.

The roots-and reach-of "Great Replacement" theory in France and beyond?
The Eurabia Myth delves into the origins and evolution of far-right anxieties about the future of a Europe that welcomes postcolonial migration, racial and ethnic diversity, and tolerance of Islam. Nationalists deploy the specter of "Eurabia"-an Arabized and Islamized Europe-as a doomsday scenario of demographic replacement that only they can avert. Mehammed Amadeus Mack traces this dark vision to a sociopolitical conspiracy theory that began in France, spread throughout Europe, and has become especially virulent in the United States: Great Replacement Theory.
Examining how the Eurabia narrative gained traction, Mack analyzes dystopian fiction that envisions how this Replacement will take place, the contemporary politicization of medieval history, and ecofascist rhetoric depicting immigrants as an "invasive" species. He also interviews prominent French activists of color about how they subvert being portrayed as Replacers and destroyers of European civilization, and he explores the American echoes of the Great Replacement Theory.
Innovatively deploying gender and sexuality theory to the concept of Eurabia, Mack demonstrates that the demographic and racial anxieties underlying Great Replacement Theory are intertwined with a more fundamental crisis of masculinity, evident in the far right's accusations that feminists and the LGBT community are responsible for the decline in white birth rates. As it uncovers the deeper roots of this pervasive theory, The Eurabia Myth shows its insidious relevance to a rising tide of nativist fear, hatred, and violence.

A bold reimagining of life that bridges science, philosophy, cybernetics, and the complexities of biological existence
The Organism Is a Theory is an intriguing synthesis of decades of interdisciplinary research by eminent mathematician and biological scientist Giuseppe Longo. A unique collaboration between Longo and philosopher of technology Adam Nocek, the volume confronts foundational issues in the history of mathematics, computer science, physics, and theoretical biology.
Challenging conventional approaches that apply computational and formalist models to the biological world, Longo reveals how the limitations of these models hinder the understanding of organismic complexity, development, and evolution. Through a critique of dominant scientific paradigms, he emphasizes the need for a new biological theory that accounts for the temporal and spatial intricacies of life. Enhanced by Nocek's comprehensive introduction and a fascinating three-part interview with Longo, The Organism Is a Theory offers a bold rethinking of the biosciences, integrating the work of Alan Turing, Bernhard Riemann, Henri PoincarE, Kurt GOEdel, and others into Longo's vision of critical biology.
Bridging scientific and philosophical discourses, this book creatively applies insights from mathematics, physics, and computing into the study of the organism to present a new theoretical approach to understanding biological complexity that resists reductive mechanistic and informatic explanations.

New strategies for resistance and opposing colonialism From the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Gaza, recent events have demonstrated the implacability of settler colonialism and its racist underpinnings. Annie Isabel Fukushima and K. Melchor Quick Hall edit a visionary collection focused on radical struggles against these forces. The editors organize the essays in four thematic sections: subversive labor; spatialities and temporalities; resistance; and genealogies and feminist futures. Inspired by outside catalysts like sharing circles and poetry, the contributors challenge the boundaries of time and space that we imagine as constraints on labor and resistance. Their methodological approaches include participation observation, platicas, critical participatory action research, spatial analysis, interviews, testimonio, grounded theory, and historical analysis. Interdisciplinary and diverse, Decolonial Feminist Genealogies and Futures draws on a unique history of thought and action to map a new generation of practices. Contributors: Esther O. Advancing asexuality studies in new, queer directions-beyond identity and beyond the human
We've all seen the page that states "this page intentionally left blank" or heard an authority figure declare "nothing to see here, folks," and yet the so-called blank page has writing on it, and folks definitely have something to see. From the entry point of these and other paradoxical declarations of absence, KJ Cerankowski applies the aesthetics of asexuality to theorize silences, nothings, and emptiness. In the process, he explores new ways of making meaning out of the supposedly meaningless.
Throughout this investigation into absences, Cerankowski moves intuitively and idiosyncratically, taking readers along a series of waypoints that include Border, the acclaimed horror film about a customs officer who can smell fear; Jenny Hval's discomfiting novel Paradise Rot; and disabled artist Finnegan Shannon's iconic benches. Experimental in form as well as content, Nothing Wanting offers an innovative and mischievous reading experience that plays with structural elements like redaction, erasure, supertext, and repetition. With a deeply anticapitalist, anticolonial motivating ideology, it pushes to the limits of language, subverting commonplace notions of books, knowledge, and what it is to be human.
Moving beyond identity and representation, Nothing Wanting is playful, fascinating, and provocative as it conceives asexuality as additive and expansive rather than lacking. As it reveals the vibrant lifeworlds that hum in silences and thrum in stillnesses, Nothing Wanting pivots from the imposition of wanting nothing to the craving of nothing wanting: satisfied, yet always yearning for more worlds of thriving-for everything and everyone.
