Doren G. Snoek translates current theory in memory studies to textual production in antiquity. Focusing on textual and material scribal processes that contribute to the formation of historical knowledge, especially for the biblical book Chronicles, he describes how scribes respond to social conditions and existing texts as they generate new "media offers," that is, new scrolls and the new narratives they contain. He argues that Chronicles creates new social, political, and religious possibilities and, in some cases, may have caused the loss of historical knowledge. The study contributes to scholarship by characterizing Chronicles as a literarily autonomous and materially independent national history for Yehud.

The main objective of this book is to show that Porphyry extends moral concern to harmless living beings in his account of justice in On Abstinence. Miira Tuominen argues that while Porphyry shares some commonalities with the Platonists, Stoics and Theophrastus on the nature of justice, he develops an original notion of justice also attributing it to external actions. As an attribute of actions, justice consists in refraining from harming harmless animate creatures including animals and plants. Porphyry’s account is entangled with his polemic with opponents of vegetarianism and his quotations from other authors in that polemic. By unravelling these inner complexities of the treatise, this book shows the surprising modernity of his discussions.

Smahlo, Serhii, Jesus' Meals with Sinners : Enactment of Reversal on the Background of Early Jewish Eschatological Expectations. (Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zum Neuen Testament 2. Reihe) 300 S. 2025:9 (Mohr, GW) <751-198>

To investigate Jesus' associations with 'tax collectors and sinners' within the Jewish apocalyptic framework, Serhii Smahlo identifies the essential features of the gospel accounts and examines their alignment with an eschatological vision found in Jewish tradition. The overall survey reveals a consistent motif: it is the presence of 'unexpected participants,' explained by Jesus in terms of reversal, that causes indignation among his opponents. Viewing this motif against the background of early Jewish eschatological expectations, Serhii Smahlo argues that Jesus' meals with 'unexpected participants' were a specific enactment of eschatological reversal, reflecting both a close connection to common apocalyptic expectations and a certain discrepancy from them, which might explain the conflict and rejection surrounding these events.

With this book, Julien M. Ogereau explores the apostle Paul's first Epistle to the Thessalonians through the perspective of Graeco-Roman epigraphy. Although scholars have frequently highlighted the significance of inscriptions for interpreting the New Testament, this commentary is the first to study systematically a New Testament text within the epigraphical context in which the author and recipients were linguistically and culturally embedded. Inscriptions indeed played a vital role in ancient society, both representing and shaping language use, including that of New Testament authors. This commentary features the epigraphic material that is considered to be the most enlightening on a particular lexeme, passage, or topic, and that is chronologically and geographically the closest to the location of the author and audience (e.g., inscriptions from Macedonia and Achaea dating from the first century AD). It examines the use of each lexeme in inscriptions and presents their relevance for the interpretation of a passage of the letter, in dialogue with current exegetical discussions. Each section on a particular passage begins with the Greek text and a translation that integrates the semantic insights derived from inscriptions. It then examines and discusses in detail the relevant epigraphic evidence for each important lexeme, or for the passage as a whole. Finally, each section concludes with a short summary that explores the potential meaning of the passage in light of the epigraphic material collected, both from the perspective of the author and from that of the audience.

In the United States stakeholders make rules for the allocation of deceased-donor transplant organs. More than 110,000 Americans are currently awaiting transplants and more than 1,200 die annually before they get transplants; more than 1,700 leave the waiting list annually because they've become too sick to receive transplants. Contributing to better organ transplantation policy is thus socially valuable with life and death consequences. In Negotiating Values, David Weimer deals with this important policy issue. He considers how well stakeholder rulemaking, an example of constructed collaboration, taps relevant expertise and he exploits the unusual opportunity it provides to study the implementation of a substantial planned organizational change. He also explores the implications of "street level" responses for the operation of systemwide allocation rules. Most broadly, Weimer contributes to our understanding of complex multigoal decisionmaking by explicating the interplay between values and evidence in responding to a demand for substantial policy change.

Bringing Their Mother Home examines the worship of the Greco-Phrygian goddess Cybele, known as the Magna Mater in Rome, to understand the ways that the mid- to late Roman Republic constructed and performed a multicultural, multiethnic identity. The goddess, originally worshiped in ancient Turkey, was brought by the Romans to their city in 204 BCE and renamed the Magna Mater (the Great Mother). Previous scholarship contended that the Romans feared and hated the goddess and her followers because they were foreign and gender nonconforming, but author Krishni Burns argues that the Romans embraced the Magna Mater and her genderfluid followers as they created a space for multiculturalism at a time when Rome was expanding rapidly across the Mediterranean. By importing the cult and ritually performing the Magna Mater's blended Phrygian and Roman identity, the Roman state was able to ease the process of incorporating the eastern Mediterranean kingdoms into its hegemony.

Drawing on historical, literary, and archaeological evidence, Bringing Their Mother Home reevaluates the semiotics and practices of the Magna Mater cult as a way to perform the multicultural Roman identity and explores the political and military climate of the Mediterranean leading up to the cult's adoption in 204 BCE.

Scholarly interest in theological aspects of Murdoch's fiction and philosophy took off slowly. It was thirty years after her writing debut that the first work taking detailed notice of the theological language deployed by this overtly-atheist author appeared, and it was a further decade before theologians began to engage with Murdoch's work together. But it was not until the twenty-first century that this aspect of Murdoch's thought and imagination began to receive sustained attention. This collection seeks to build on this foundation, begun forty years ago, and to expand the work in this area of Murdoch studies which has lately been gathering momentum. This project consolidates earlier discussion of the vital part theology plays in Murdoch's thought, and then takes the debate in new directions. Contributors include a wide range of current Murdoch scholars from diverse disciplines who develop debate about this subject in a variety of innovative and fruitful ways, to inspire future works in this area of Murdoch studies.

This revised and updated handbook brings together methodological, theoretical, and empirical studies in the economics of language. With contributions from leading researchers, it examines the impact of linguistic diversity on economic outcomes and public policies. The interdependence of language and culture is highlighted through an analysis of the evolution of different languages and the economic consequences of linguistic diversity, as well as the impact of language on consumer behavior and the creation of gendered economic structures. Particularly attention is given to the impact of languages on macroeconomics, including the relationship between language and trade, and language and migrations. The challenge of globalization to minority languages and the growth of multilingual societies is also discussed, alongside the specific dynamics between economics and language at a regional level. It also addresses new developments in LLM (large language models).

This book offers a detailed and original look at the role language plays within international and local economic systems. It will be of interest to students and researchers interested in the economics of language.

Maimonides (Moshe/Moses ben Maimon, 1138-1204) was not only the dominant rabbinic and Jewish intellectual figure of the later medieval period, but also one of history's greatest philosophers. As the author of the Mishneh Torah (ca. 1180), a compendium and systematization of the Jewish legal code, he remains an unsurpassed (if not uncontroversial) authority on halakha (Jewish law). His philosophical masterpiece, however, is the Guide of the Perplexed (1185-1190), in which he systematically presents his views on theology, metaphysics, cosmology, natural science, epistemology, Scriptural hermeneutics, law and ethics. This accessible and highly readable book introduces the reader to Maimonides' life and thought, and uses a number of enduring and popular philosophical topics - including the problem of evil, freedom of the will, and the relationship between virtue and happiness - to show that he continues to be interesting and relevant to readers today.

This Element provides an argumentative introduction to the doctrines of karma and rebirth in Hinduism. It explains how various Hindu texts, traditions, and figures have understood the philosophical nuances of karma and rebirth. It also acquaints readers with some of the most important academic debates about these doctrines. The Element's primary argumentative aim is to defend the rationality of accepting the truth of karma and rebirth through a critical examination of an array of arguments for and against these doctrines. It concludes by highlighting the relevance of karma and rebirth to contemporary philosophical debates on a variety of issues. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

In conversation with ninety-one women over the age of eighty in California, northern Iceland, south India, and among Sisters of St. Joseph in western New York, A View from Life's Edge explores how, in the face of death, a sense of what really matters can clarify. Here we find a loosening of certitudes normally meant to keep life's unwieldiness at bay, a chipping away at the illusion that any of us are captains of our own perfectly sailing ships. Reflecting on stories and opinions shared with her across the globe, Dempsey describes how a countercultural realism and an expanded sense of wonder repeatedly emerge in later life. These are offerings that call for our attention and yet face a double challenge. In as much as we strive to deny life's finitude, we deny older adults their voices. A central conundrum of ageism is that we silence out of fear that which could quell our fears.

Death is the great equalizer, but not all deaths are created equal. In recent years, there has been an increased interest and advocacy concerning end-of-life and after-death care. An increasing number of individuals and organizations from health care to the funeral and death care industries are working to promote and encourage people to consider their end-of-life wishes. Yet, there are limits to who these efforts reach and who can access such resources. These conversations come from a place of good intentions, but also from a place of privilege.

Too Poor to Die: The Hidden Realities of Dying in the Margins, a collection of closely connected essays, takes the reader on a journey into what happens to those who die while experiencing homelessness or who end up indigent or unclaimed at the end of life. Too Poor to Die bears witness to the disparities in death and dying faced by some of society's most vulnerable and marginalized and asks the reader to consider their own end-of-life and disposition plans within the larger context of how privilege and access plays a role in what we want versus what we get in death.

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping federal protection for abortion rights and placing control in the hands of individual states. This monumental shift in policy underscores the need for deeper historical perspectives on reproductive rights.

The Nursing Clio Reader answers that call, bringing together essays that examine reproductive health through historical research and personal experience. Featuring both new and classic pieces from the Nursing Clio blog, leading historians of reproductive health provide insights that connect past struggles with today's ongoing battles over bodies, reproductive rights, and health care. This collection offers intimate, urgent scholarship that speaks to the present moment.

A powerful resource for classrooms and individual readers alike, The Nursing Clio Reader invites reflection on how the past informs current debates, urging us to engage deeply with the history of reproductive justice in a time of unprecedented change, underscoring that indeed "the personal is historical."

Chiara Formichi argues that Muslim women in Java and Sumatra, from the late 1910s to the 1950s, were central to Indonesia's progress as guardians and promoters of health and piety through gendered activities of care work. While sidelined in the Dutch colonial project of hygienic modernity, women's labor of social reproduction became increasingly visible during the Japanese Occupation and early years of independence. Women from all walks of life were called upon to fulfill domestic and motherly roles for the production and socialization of laborers, soldiers, and citizens. The medicalization of cleanliness, intersecting with multiple patriarchal orders, marginalized women's traditional influence and knowledge. However, leveraging the critical importance of infant care, cleanliness, and nutrition, women pushed against the boundaries imposed on them by the colonial and postcolonial state.

Largely absent from government archives, their words and acts are evident in vernacular magazines and visual sources drawn from official outreach, news and lifestyle media, and advertisements. Women writers rearticulated scientific mothering, nationalist maternalism, and Islamic ideals of motherhood to create a public voice through gendered care work. The framework of Domestic Nationalism proposes that as the modern Indonesian nation-state took shape capitalizing on the public function of mothering, so did homemaking become a crossroads of national and international approaches to development, blurring nonaligned self-reliance and global capitalist interests.

In June 2022, Roe was overturned. The constitutional right to abortion was gone, and abortion was soon banned or severely restricted in states across the country. Clinics closed. Abortion seekers were turned away. It was a bombshell, dramatically altering the geographical landscape of abortion legality and availability. But it did not change everything. Even under Roe, for many in the US, abortion was a right in name only. The fall of Roe changed a great deal, but it is also noteworthy for what it did not change-and, perhaps, for what it made more visible about whom the Roe legal regime served and whom it failed.

In this volume, an interdisciplinary group of abortion scholars examines the history, politics, and practical experience of abortion leading up to the overturning of Roe, placing this judicial decision in a longer history of abortion in the US. Chapters delve into what the fall of Roe revealed about abortion seekers, abortion provision, and abortion advocacy. With diverse voices, formats, and styles, chapters include geographically specific deep dives and incisive big picture assessments. Collectively, they demystify abortion and abortion research, laying bare common misunderstandings and misinformation about the topic, and belying claims that Dobbs "changed everything." In the aftermath of the fall of Roe, this volume offers readers the opportunity to reorient scholarship and understanding about abortion, recognizing what was already true before Roe was overturned and how losing the protections of Roe forced, enabled, and perhaps even facilitated a new era of abortion. Only by understanding the historical moment when Roe fell can we anticipate what might happen next in the ongoing social and political contention over reproductive autonomy and freedom.

This book explores how public hospital sector doctors in Hong Kong understand their work and careers. Using narrative interviews with 27 medical doctors, the book examines how their personal values provide motivation and meaning for their work. How do they cope with the various hardships and crises they face in public hospitals? How can other doctors navigate similar issues in their own work? What should medical students know about the reality of medical work, as they stand poised to start their own career journeys? What should medical administrators know about work at the coal-face as they seek to tackle the problems the sector faces? This book offers a rare, personal window into doctors' views on their own work. The book also provides a useful resource for students and scholars in the fields of medical humanities, public health, the sociology of work, and narrative research.

This book explores some of the most daunting workforce challenges in healthcare services in history. These challenges are not new, but reflect decades of under-investment and lack of strategic planning. According to the World Health Organization, there will be a global shortage of 18 million health workers by 2030, mainly in low- and middle-income countries.

This book draws upon the best papers from the international Organisational Behaviour in Health Care (OBHC) conference, which took place at the University of Birmingham in 2022, hosted by the Health Services Management Centre. The OBHC conference is linked to the Society for Studies in Organising Health Care (SHOC), a learned society affiliated to the UK Academy of Social Sciences. Taking an international approach, this edited volume incorporates the highest quality papers submitted by members of the society and Key themes explored include clinical leadership in times of crisis, human resource management in homecare, and organisational behaviour and the health care workforce. With its in depth coverage, this book will appeal to international healthcare practitioners.

On the Frontlines of Crisis is a powerful and deeply human account of the experiences of healthcare workers during one of the most harrowing periods in modern history-the COVID-19 pandemic. As hospitals around the globe became overwhelmed by the influx of critically ill patients, those working in intensive care units (ICUs) were thrust into an unprecedented battle against a new, deadly virus about which little was understood. Rodriquez takes readers into the heart of two Massachusetts ICUs to learn about the people who put their lives on the line and faced unimaginable challenges as they treated critically ill patients at the peak of the pandemic.

Drawing from extensive interviews with ICU staff, this book captures the social-psychological impact of the pandemic on those who found themselves on the frontlines of this global crisis. It examines five key social processes: treating patients, managing risk, feeling emotions, constructing boundaries, and navigating the complex politics that emerged during the pandemic. Through these lenses, Rodriquez reveals how healthcare workers coped with the daily risks to their own health, the emotional demands of constant loss, and the impossible decisions they had to make.

The dramatic spike in mental health distress among healthcare workers was not just a consequence of the pandemic but also a result of the changing dynamics within the healthcare system itself. In particular, the book examines the impact of the evolution of emotional socialization within healthcare, from the traditional model of "detached concern" to the more contemporary focus on "clinical empathy." This shift, while intended to improve patient care, had profound implications for healthcare workers during the pandemic, often blurring the lines between professional distance and personal involvement, increasing the emotional demands on staff and heightened their vulnerability to anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and burnout.

But this book is not just a narrative of hardship; it is also a critical examination of the systemic issues within the healthcare industry that left workers unprepared and at times unprotected. Through the personal stories of those who were in the ICU, On the Frontlines of Crisis offers a sobering reflection on the social and emotional costs of caring for waves upon waves of incurable patients. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the human tragedy of the pandemic and the enduring challenges faced by healthcare workers in the most demanding corners of our healthcare system.

This book provides a comprehensive exploration of inclusive, sustainable development, emphasizing the critical need to integrate the perspectives and needs of people with disabilities and marginalized communities into the global sustainability transition to a sustainable future. Through highlighting the intersectionality of identity and the unique challenges faced by these groups, the book addresses a pressing issue: the often-overlooked barriers that hinder their full participation in sustainable transitions. Organized into three parts, the book first contextualizes the relationship between sustainability and inclusion. It delves into the historical and theoretical frameworks that shape our understanding of marginalization, exploring how disability intersects with various social identities. This foundation sets the stage for an in-depth analysis of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the ways in which they can be made more inclusive, ensuring that no one is left behind. The second part identifies and examines the myriad barriers to inclusion within sustainable practices. It addresses structural, socioeconomic, and cultural obstacles that perpetuate exclusion while also critiquing existing policy frameworks for their limitations in addressing the needs of marginalized populations. Through case studies, the book highlights successful initiatives and innovative practices that promote accessibility and equity, mainly through the use of assistive technologies and community engagement. In the final section, the book outlines actionable strategies for fostering inclusive, sustainable development. It emphasizes the importance of community engagement, participatory decision-making, and the empowerment of marginalized voices. Additionally, it discusses metrics for monitoring and evaluating the impact of sustainability initiatives on people with disabilities, providing a framework for accountability and continuous improvement.

This book aims to bridge the gap between sustainability and social justice, offering a roadmap for stakeholders, policymakers, and practitioners committed to creating a more inclusive world. This book targets academics, policymakers, non-profit societies, and activists working at the intersection of sustainability and social equity and serves as a vital resource for those seeking to understand and promote inclusive practices in the global sustainable transition.

Exposing the ableism underlying medical innovation

As medical advancements continue to shape the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disability and illness, technology is often presented as a pathway to autonomy. Challenging this assumption, Rebecca Monteleone shows how medical technologies contribute to a cruel double bind, forcing disabled people to be accountable for adapting to a world built by and for nondisabled people while dismissing their lived experiences in favor of medical expertise. Far more complex than simple progress, these technologies are more oppressive than liberating when they place the burden of care on individuals and perpetuate societal ableism that demands that bodies look, move, and function in certain ways.

The Double Bind of Disability examines the complex relationship between medical technologies and their users, highlighting tensions between personal responsibility and medical authority. Sharing the perspectives and experiences of users of three medical technologies (prenatal genetic screening, deep brain stimulation, and do-it-yourself artificial pancreas systems), Monteleone analyzes how users navigate the constraints of these systems and also imagine a new, more liberatory approach to healthcare.

Asserting a bold vision, Monteleone describes a future where medical interventions take seriously the lived expertise of disabled people to address ableist infrastructures rather than require the modification of nonnormative bodyminds. She calls for a radical reimagining of medical technology that moves beyond individualistic frameworks to embrace collective experience and embodied knowing.

Roughly 61 million people with disabilities live in the United States, and there are many more millions of people with disabilities around the world. Not surprisingly, differences among and between people with disabilities are often as notable as differences between people with and without disabilities. And, while the lack of homogeneity among people with disabilities makes creating a valid taxonomy under this term difficult, if not impossible, there is commonality among and between people with disabilities that justifies an authoritative resource on positive psychology and disability. That is, they have experienced discrimination and marginalization as a function of their disability. This expanded and updated volume assembles chapters by leading scholars in the fields of disability and positive psychology to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the state of the combined field of positive psychology and disability. Chapters are organized into thematic sections, beginning with an introductory section providing information on overarching themes in positive psychology and disability. The second section focuses on specific positive psychological constructs that have relevance to disability, including optimism, hope, social well-being, resilience, and positive education. The following section examines systems that take strengths-based approaches to treatment and intervention, while the fourth section looks at the application of positive psychological principles in specific disciplines such as rehabilitation sciences and disability studies. The final section focuses on topics that merit consideration in positive psychology and disability such as disability ethics, adaptation, and toxic positivity. Disability has always been associated with "differentness" and, consequently, people with disabilities have, throughout time, been treated as such. By examining disability from a strengths-based perspective, this volume provides a catalyst to accelerate the application of positive psychology with regard to how disability is understood.

This book offers a critical medical anthropological approach on health communication during the COVID-19 pandemic. As decision-making about risk communication and policies can be especially challenging during times of crisis, this research contributes to a better understanding of the dynamics of risk communication and its effects on the public, while paying attention to issues around communicability and health inequity. To examine the perception of public health messages around the COVID-19 pandemic in Yucatan, Mexico Patricia Oulehla conducted 21 semi-structured interviews. Findings demonstrate that local perceptions of COVID-19 were influenced by both media and government information campaigns, as well as by rumors, which emerge in times of uncertainty, often stemming from social and political tensions. As inequality has been amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, already marginalized groups, such as the Mayan population of rural villages have been at greater risk during the pandemic. Therefore, this research explores how colonial continuities manifest themselves in health policies, access to health-related information as well as the spread of rumors.

How to remake the world with neurodivergence at its heart

What if we embraced neurodivergent ways of being not as deviations to be corrected but as vital ways of inhabiting the world? What new realities might emerge? Bringing a much-needed humanistic perspective to the study of autism and other forms of neurodivergence, Counter-cartographies offers a bold reimagining of neurological difference, moving beyond rigid diagnostic frameworks to uncover more expansive, generative modes of existence.

Engaging the work of Fernand Deligny to trace how modern taxonomies of neurodivergence have hardened over time, Leon J. Hilton questions how these categories might instead serve as tools for remapping the world with neurodivergence at its center. At the heart of Counter-cartographies is an exploration of performance and performativity that reveals how the norm of neurotypical reality is continually reinforced through acts of doing, redoing, and undoing.

Charting the historical shift away from "mind" and toward "brain" and moving fluidly across disciplines-from digital art and documentary cinema to cybernetics and radical mental health movements-Hilton illuminates the deep interconnections between performance, perception, and the historical construction of the "neurotypical." Through close readings of works by William Pope.L, Mel Baggs, Wu Tsang, and others, Hilton also examines how neurodivergence has been represented, embodied, and materialized in contemporary art and media. Restless, engrossing, and persistently attuned to moments of rupture when the neurotypical order falters, Counter-cartographies charts a path toward a more capacious, imaginative world.
