Understanding by Design (R) (UbD) is an internationally renowned curriculum development framework that has been used by educators across the world for more than three decades. The key ideas of the UbD framework are contained in its title: 1) prioritize the development of in-depth understandings to facilitate transfer for real-world applications; and 2) apply a three-stage design process for creating curricula toward those ends.

Though most widely used in K-12 schools, UbD can be applied to guide postsecondary faculty in designing courses to deepen students' understanding and promote transfer in professional settings. Given the reality that most higher education faculty have little to no preparation in designing curriculum, the practical three-stage backward design framework can support them in applying their disciplinary expertise to develop coursework for deeper learning and transfer.

The goal of this book is to support faculty in thoughtfully designing coursework that prioritizes students' understanding, incorporates authentic and engaging assessments, and encourages active learning for understanding and transfer beyond the college classroom. Rather than recycling old syllabi or simply covering the chapters of a textbook, faculty will learn to harness their rich academic and professional expertise to design meaningful, authentic, and engaging curriculum.

Stephen Sharot traces the evolution of male stardom from its beginnings in 1909 through the United States' entrance into World War II in 1941, highlighting the influence of a changing American society on masculine identity and ideals.

Drawing on conceptual frameworks from both sociology and film studies including hegemonic masculinity, the civilizing process, and star studies, Sharot analyzes the various masculinities adopted by male stars like Richard Barthelmess, Thomas Meighan, William Powell, among others. In doing so, he demonstrates the integral relationship between trends in masculine personas, shifting gender relations, and changes to the nature of work and the labor force. As constructions and articulations of masculinity among emergent classes were transformed, he contends, so too were their representations.

In recent years numerous authors have claimed that underneath everything political there lies something religious - an underground religious substance, as it were. These religious elements, it is said, are the essence of political phenomena and the driving force of their history. Even in our modern 'secularized' politics, the heart of the matter, it is alleged, is religious, just as it was in the past. This fashion for the theological-political can be observed in the most varied trends in contemporary philosophy, from the work of Giorgio Agamben and Charles Taylor to that of Richard Rorty and Juergen Habermas.

In Geraldine Muhlmann's view, this 'theological-political' idea is a sham. It sheds no light on the factors that underlie key political developments, such as the crisis of liberal democracies and the rise of authoritarianism. It has nothing to say about the concrete ways in which religious points of reference, when they do exist, are used to wage war or to make politics. It contributes nothing to reflection on political matters and it leads us astray by failing to attend to their specific, complex and intertwined logics.

So what accounts for the rise of theological-political thought? Muhlmann argues that its popularity has less to do with a genuine attempt to understand politics and more to do with a desire by philosophers to demonstrate their ability to grasp the substantial basis of politics and the true direction of political history. In other words, the triumph of the theological-political is a philosophical hubris - and a dangerous one at that.

The book features the personal accounts of a sample of UK independent publishers and follows them across a ten-year period. It records their highs and lows, including how they responded to the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the fundamental problems operators faced was that policy makers viewed legacy mainstream local and independent internet era publishers as the same, whereas existing policy favors legacy providers with their elevated status and superior lobbying power.

This study reveals the absence of a level playing field. Independents' coping strategies are revealed as they slowly organized themselves into a sector. Between 1880 and 1910, as Jim Crow's legal apparatus transformed Louisiana's complex racial landscape into a stark binary, Creole women fought to preserve their community's distinctive identity through the most ordinary acts of daily life. In their households, they cultivated kinship arrangements that prioritized mutual care over conventional family structures. In workshops and factories, they navigated the degradation of traditional occupations while strategically avoiding associations with Black women's labor. In churches, they deployed Catholic sacraments to formalize social bonds and secure legal protections. In courtrooms, they exploited Louisiana's racial ambiguities to defend their families and assert their claims to elevated status. Through these seemingly mundane spheres of daily existence, Creole women resisted the racial order that sought to collapse all people of African descent into a single category of Blackness.

Making Creole: Women and the Creole Community in Early Jim Crow New Orleans examines how Creole women took action against the systematic erosion of their privileges. As Louisiana moved from recognizing the legal status of free people of color to enforcing rigid Jim Crow segregation, Creole women became the primary architects of sociocultural preservation. Before the Civil War, Louisiana law had distinguished all free persons of African descent as legally separate from both enslaved persons and white people, granting them specific rights and privileges based on their "free" status rather than their complexion alone. The end of slavery eliminated this legal distinction. By the early twentieth century, Jim Crow legislation systematically forced all people of African descent into a single racialized category of Blackness, erasing the complex racial hierarchies that had previously structured Louisiana society. In this context, Creole women's labor in managing complex kinship networks, preserving Franco-Catholic traditions, policing community boundaries, and strategically navigating legal institutions constituted essential political work that sustained not just families but an entire ethnic community under siege.

Using an innovative "speculative demography" methodology, Natasha L. McPherson analyzes more than nine thousand transcribed records from census data, court documents, and Catholic church registers, including materials from the Sisters of the Holy Family, to reconstruct patterns of Creole women's resistance between 1880 and 1910. Making Creole moves beyond traditional narratives of political organizing to illuminate how women's everyday practices became mechanisms of ethnic identity formation and cultural survival, revealing resistance from the intimate spaces where it actually occurred.
