The term "new-wave cinema," historically attributed by film critics to specific film collections within different societies, has lacked universal applicability in film scholarship. This book identifies the defining criterion of the new wave not solely within its specific aesthetics but in the transformative "break" that these aesthetic properties effectuate upon the prevailing filmic communication. This "break" extends beyond singular films, manifesting within a substantial cohort, thereby justifying the label "wave." Notably, this "wave" does not materialize as a result of a collective decision by filmmakers but rather in correlation with the societal "contradictions and conflicts" prevailing during the emergence of new-wave films.

This book delineates how the resonance of societal contradictions and conflicts in films, as a subsystem of art, can catalyze three different reactions to existing aesthetic and narrative traditions, thereby giving birth to new cinematic waves. The analysis concentrates on three paradigmatic new-wave cinemas spanning three continents, namely New German Cinema, New Hollywood, and New Iranian Cinema, illustrating the universality of its thesis despite the aesthetic differences among the cinematic movements commonly labeled as "new wave" in film scholarship.

Although some aspects of the film festival experience have changed over a long history of film festival cultures there are others that remain constant: an effort emotional and physical to attend a festival, excitement or festival buzz of being part of a festival, a sense of community of viewers rooted in the individual response to films, and the impact of seeing a film in the festival environment which ranges from pleasurable and inspiration through boring to outrages and abject.

Dorota Ostrowska's book explores the uniqueness of this occasionally irreverent, often disruptive and at times unsettling festival experience for the diverse festival audiences through the concept of festive chronotopes. It argues the importance of space for our understanding of festival experience as it is this space, intimate and collective, that shapes film festival programmes, moulds curational and programming practice and critical response, and drives the desire for the festive experience to be repeated and reinvented on annual basis.

In Caste War Now and Never scholar S. B. West considers Yucatan's nineteenth-century Caste War, the longest and most violent Indigenous uprising of the Western Hemisphere, to argue that it actually never occurred.

Instead, West writes that the violent events grouped under the "Caste War" label must be understood through alternative frameworks that resist the emergent logics of race war and include related regulatory matrices like gender and land. Through this lens, the Caste War emerges as a discursive construct rooted in an anti-Indigenous archive that served the political interests of a frustrated regional elite during the rise of liberalism and nationhood. West argues that Caste War discourse unfolds as a technology that mobilized and legitimized genocidal actions against racialized rebels and inspired assimilation into hegemonic political and social structures.

In the second half of the book, West looks at the Caste War to engage its contemporary polysemic nature through close readings of Yucatec Maya texts, stories, and other forms of knowledge production. These sources reframe the Caste War as an important part of a framework of resistance that defies colonial time and reclaims narrative control of its events.

This book challenges two common mistakes in our current political discourse: that religion is merely a private, individual matter or, conversely, that religion should dominate public discourse. Moving beyond these blind alleys requires emphasis on the way of reason in both politics and religion. Democracy itself, the book argues, depends on the way of reason, and contemporary attacks on reason and argument are therefore not unrelated to the recent rise in authoritarianism and other forms of antidemocratic thought. In its effort to secure a metaphysical basis for democratic political theory, the book concentrates on the thought of the philosopher and theologian Franklin I. Gamwell while also relying on Charles Hartshorne in theistic metaphysics and John Rawls in political philosophy. Classical theism is criticized as is relativistic misology, the latter of which conceals a universal claim that all knowledge claims are restricted to a particular lifeworld. Throughout the book there is an effort to understand the necessary and the contingent as they relate to the virtue of toleration of reasonable differences in both religion and politics.

Beginning in 1925 the corporate lawyer and civil libertarian Arthur Garfield Hays began battling segregation. This book details Hays's work on the Mayor's Commission that investigated the1935 Harlem riot; his role in a 1937 restrictive covenant case in Westchester, County; his representing a challenger to the segregated draft in World War II; his part in ending the exclusion of African Americans from the American Bar Association; and his opposition to strong fair employment legislation. Motivated by his conception of a good society that valued civil liberties, democracy, and individualism, Hays fought for African Americans' legal rights under the Constitution. His activism was limited by his conservative economic views and his fear of an active state that intervened in private matters. His career illuminates the potential and perils of interracial co-operation during the long civil rights movement. Because the issues he confronted continue today-police mistreatment of African Americans, housing discrimination, limits on African Americans in the professions, racial discrimination in the military, and how to build government structures to limit discrimination-this book speaks to our time as well as his.
