This book is intended to help people newly involved in the development of workplace safety and health programs to understand principles and concepts that can help them roll out what is often referred to as a "safety program." It introduces the safety and health landscape in simple terms and provides a framework for common program start-up or program improvement action steps.

Providing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with a primer on how to think about and go about creating a safety program, this book presents a higher-level overview, framework models and suggestions, resource information, and shares concepts that can help readers not only meet regulatory requirements but also provide true value to the organization. Safety consultant Greg G. Zigulis presents readers with an accessible overview of the types of things that should be known and considered in order to create and run an effective and sustainable health and safety program.

Written for a broad professional readership, this book will be invaluable for all SME businesspersons and practitioners who need a seasoned expert to provide an understandable introduction to safety programs, whatever their situation. It's particularly relevant to start-ups and people given responsibility for workplace safety without a background in this area.

The new edition of this popular introduction takes seriously the idea that health outcomes can be fully understood only by investigating the role the social world plays in our health.

Ratcliff and Axtell-Thompson put into practice the "upstream" imagery championed by public health experts, locating the causes of health problems - and their solutions - within the social environment. Each chapter explains how the shape of social institutions, the unequal realities of community life, and the politics behind corporate and governmental decisions produce and perpetuate unhealthy living and working conditions. This new edition links more strongly to existing US and international policy frameworks on the determinants of health and pays greater attention to socioeconomic factors, education, climate change, and neighborhood disparities.

Arguing that none of us should be placed in health-threatening situations that could be prevented, this provocative analysis uses social justice and human rights lenses to guide public discussion toward changes that can produce a healthier world for us all. It will continue to be invaluable to professionals and students in sociology, public health, and other fields related to health.

This book presents a theoretical and empirical investigation of predatory raiding in Russia. Predatory raiding in Russia is the process of depriving lawful owners of their businesses and property with the help of criminal methods, including corruption, fraud, and violence, wrapped in the clothes of legality. The book argues that significant changes in value of corporations, property, and land in Russia incentivize predatory raiders. The appreciation of economic assets influences predatory raiders' decision-making regarding the selection of potential targets for hostile takeovers. Unlike Western corporate raiders, who target weak companies in financial distress, Russian predatory raiders target primarily the most profitable, lucrative or economically promising companies, as well as private and public property, and land. Russian predatory raiders give clear preference to non-economic instruments for staging hostile takeovers. These comprise legal battles, corruption, fraud, intimidation and violence. Russian predatory raiders are distinctive for their frequent use of force, threat of force, or violence, as applied to businesses and property owners. This research relies on extensive video footage of violent hostile takeovers to draw inferences about the phenomenon of predatory raiding in Russia. In defining the perspective directions for the corporate predatory raiding movement and the anti-raiding campaign, the process of re-valuation of assets may be more important than the mass privatization of the 1990s.

Reviewing the dismantling of American labor law in more than Supreme Court cases

The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), signed into law by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1935, guarantees the right of private sector employees to organize into trade unions, engage in collective bargaining, and take collective action such as strikes. Since its passage, the NLRA has functioned as the foundational statute of United States labor law. Opposed by conservatives and members of the Republican Party from the beginning, its provisions were largely upheld by the Supreme Court until the 1960's. In the latter part of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, however, the Court began to erode the protections of the NLRA. While some cases have received widespread attention from commentators and scholars, such as Starbucks Corp. v. McKinney (2 24), there have been numerous detrimental rulings that are little discussed. Taken as a whole, the Supreme Court's efforts to undermine the NLRA appear sustained and systematic.

In The Assault on American Labor Law, distinguished labor law professor Roger C. Hartley collects and carefully reviews every Supreme Court decision concerning the NLRA over the past sixty years. By examining approximately cases, Hartley demonstrates that the Court has often operated more like a legislature than a judicial body, effectively amending the NLRA's collectivist policy underpinnings in favor of the interests of individuals and businesses. These judicial decisions create staggering obstacles for American workers to collectively organize and force them to face globalization, deindustrialization, and technological change individually, without the negotiating leverage provided by union representation. While scholars have suggested individual reforms to re-establish the efficacy of the NLRA, Hartley's thorough study illuminates how the current crisis in US labor law evolved - a comprehensive view that is necessary to help restore the rights of workers to unionize.

Arguing for equality as the necessary foundation of liberty

During Ralph Waldo Emerson's lifetime, the idea of universal human equality was under intensive assault. Repeatedly - in contexts ranging from slavery, to marriage, to politics and workers' rights - Americans of the time were being told that equality was an obsolete ideal and that the future would belong to those who accepted the hard truth that liberty lies not in egalitarian values but in hierarchies of domination and submission. Greg Garvey's Emerson and the Defense of Equality focuses on Emerson as a real-time defender of equality during the antebellum culture wars.

In contrast to studies that treat individual liberty as Emerson's primary concern, Garvey argues that Emerson's works define a broad and sustained defense of equality as the necessary foundation of liberty. When read as part of a debate about equality, Emerson's Nature is a treatise on individuality and the common weal his anti-slavery speeches and English Traits advance evolutionary theories to rebut polygenesist arguments for white supremacy the essays 'Love' and 'Domestic Life' challenge gender spheres and explore equality in marriage, friendship, and citizenship. As Emerson speculates on the future, 'Politics' and 'The Young American' anticipate a 'beneficent socialism' in which human rights will always have priority over property rights. In his career-long effort to defend a threatened ideal, Emerson develops an aspirational vision of society that understands equality to be a fundamental aspect of liberty.

The concept of disability is actively used by social justice movements and welfare state systems, but it is often rejected by people involved with patient organisations, neurodiversity movements, and comparable diversity proponents.

This book unites these social actor positions by outlining an overarching disability model. It discusses the potential for the model to serve as a boundary object for people with impairments, activist organisations, professionals, redistributive welfare systems, and scholarly works in Disability Studies. Using a three-fold model in which disability is understood as a social construction, a valued condition, and an unwanted state that can improve from therapy, it shows the potential of the three frameworks as discursive powers inherent to a broad and unifying model of disability as well as the possible use of such a broad disability model for diverse actors positioned in heterogeneous social arenas.

It will be of interest to all scholars, students, and professionals working within the field of Disability Studies, sociology, social policy, health studies, and social work.

A fascinating examination of "tuberous associations"-the economies, politics, and ecologies enabled by human-tuber interactions

The world is much more tuberous than most people know. From the millions of smallholder peasants cultivating tuber plants to the teams of scientists mapping potato genomic information to the industrial manufacturers selecting the best varieties for producing French fries, life unfolds in a tuber-enabled environment. This book describes the many different forms of "tuberous association"-the patterns of production, kinship, collaboration, resistance, feeding, and care that arise from and are made possible by tuberous partnerships.

Tubers are vital partners, or allies, that support life within autonomous collectives and at the same time are entwined in the extractive practices of colonization, land enclosure, and plantation-facts that reveal the complexity and contingency of vegetal politics. To explore this complexity, the contributors to this book consider an array of tuberous bodies, such as cassava, taro, yam, potato, and sweet potato, to draw out the subtleties and textures of human-tuber companionship in all their startling diversity.

By considering tubers not only as a "product" or "staple," but also as partners, kin, and ancestors-as lifeforms grafted to our own-the authors argue for a nuanced understanding of tuberous politics, economies, and ecologies.

In this latest volume of A History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps, Peter Adamson presents a lively and accessible introduction to European philosophy during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Philosophy in the Reformation focuses on the parallel and intertwining emergence of humanism and of religious reform, as figures like Erasmus, Luther, and Calvin remade the intellectual and spiritual life of Europe. In the first three parts of the book, philosophical developments in central Europe, France, and Britain are examined. A wide range of topics and controversies are discussed, from debates over free will to the legitimacy of tyrannicide. This was also the time of the Northern Renaissance, which saw a resurgence of ancient concepts like skepticism and atomist theories of matter. The volume's final section charts the Catholic reaction to these epochal events in the Counter-Reformation, and especially the ideas of Spanish thinkers like Molina and Suarez. Quite a few familiar figures are discussed, such as Montaigne and Copernicus. But as always in this series, Adamson lavishes attention on fascinating figures who are often ignored in the history of philosophy, like John Dee, Robert Fludd, and Oliva Sabuco (who is just one of numerous women intellectuals covered). Another feature of the book is its attention to literature and the arts: the reader will learn how the achievements of Duerer, Michelangelo, Shakespeare, and Cervantes relate to philosophical currents of the time. The eighth volume in the A History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps series takes us to the threshold of the early modern era and sets the stage for the developments that unfolded during the Enlightenment.

A fascinating journey into a new paradigm, World Competitiveness, and how it gained such importance in developing global prosperity.

In World Competitiveness: Rewriting the Rules of Global Prosperity, Stephane Garelli, a world-renowned professor who has pioneered this concept, explains what World Competitiveness means and implies, and why it has become such a strategic priority for governments and businesses worldwide.

World Competitiveness gained prominence during the four decades often described as the "golden era of globalization", stretching from China's "open door policy" in 1978 to the onset of the COVID pandemic in 2018. Then, people could travel freely, communicate, and share ideas and experiences. Companies invested, manufactured, and traded in previously closed markets. Governments compared and enhanced their strategies. Shared prosperity was the objective.

World Competitiveness, as a field of knowledge, was not researched in libraries but experienced first-hand and on-site through numerous travels and discussions with government and business leaders, and academics. Later, it was conceptualized and theorized.

This book retraces this endeavour, from the origin of competitiveness to the modern world, which is fracturing again. It blends travel experiences, practical examples, and new theories. It is so-what, future-oriented, and above all, positive. Despite recent upheavals, the world economy is fundamentally resilient, and to paraphrase Mark Twain, "not as bad as it sounds."

Not long after the 1944 creation of the core Bretton Woods institutions--the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund--another international organization emerged to address the growing issue of sovereign debt: the Paris Club. The creditor-led international mechanism for restructuring developing-country debt was not alone at its genesis. Various creditor forums competed vigorously for dominance until 1980, when the French-led Paris Club came out on top. This book presents a comprehensive examination of the development of the Paris Club from founding to achieving its status as an informal third "Bretton Woods Sister." Drawing from over forty country cases of arduous maneuvering and contentious negotiation, Thomas M. Callaghy details the complex factors that shaped the mechanism's formation, including the geopolitical context, the domestic concerns of the creditor states, and the opposition by debtor states. He shows how, in largely secretive processes, the creditors struggled over restructuring terms, the role of economic conditionality, and the nature of development while also creating agreed norms, rules, and procedures that left them real flexibility. Although China's rise to power on the international stage has reduced the Paris Club's share of multilateral sovereign debt restructuring, it remains a central player, making this book essential reading for scholars of postwar international political economy and the Bretton Woods system.

The Clarendon Aristotle Series is designed for both students and professionals. It provides accurate translations of selected Aristotelian texts, accompanied by incisive commentaries that focus on philosophical problems and issues. The volumes in the series have been widely welcomed and favourably reviewed. Important new titles are being added to the series, and a number of well-established volumes are being reissued with revisions and/or supplementary material. This is the first English translation with an associated commentary of Aristotle's On Sophistical Refutations in more than a century. Aristotle's treatise on fallacious arguments has been the starting point of accounts of fallacies for over two millennia. Apart from its importance in the history of logic and argumentation, the work also sheds light on many aspects of Aristotle's philosophy and its development. This new translation and commentary takes account of the extensive scholarly work on Aristotle's treatise in recent decades, much of it in languages other than English. It will be of interest to academics and university students in Philosophy and in Classics. As a volume in the Clarendon Aristotle Series, it emphasizes the analysis of Aristotle's arguments from a philosophical perspective and points out instances where Aristotle's positions are of interest to contemporary philosophers. The commentary does not assume any knowledge of ancient Greek, though philological issues are discussed in a separate section of Notes on the Text. Aristotle's technical vocabulary is explained through a Glossary giving both the Greek equivalents for important terms in English and, correspondingly, the English translations used for important Greek terms.

Yet through a novel retelling of the development from Leibniz to Kant to Hegel, this book places that claim in a new light, showing its centrality both to Hegel's transformations of such fundamental notions as freedom and goodness, and to his understanding of the task of philosophy as such. The account begins with Leibniz's distinctively modern project of proving that the world is a hospitable home for rational subjects, before turning to Kant's critical appropriation of Leibniz's programme in light of his radical reconfiguration of freedom as autonomy. Hegel's attempt to liberate Kant's philosophy from its residual rationalist and theological commitments then gives birth to his programme of reconciling us with the world, but only by turning the prior tradition of theodicy on its head.

In a series of specially commissioned essays, an international team of scholars examine both Platonism's metaphysical principles (the One or the Form of the Good and the Indefinite Dyad: the principles that account for unity and multiplicity) and the tradition's role as a source for ethical and political principles. In honor of Lloyd Gerson's remarkable contribution to Platonic scholarship, the full breadth of the tradition has been explored: from Plato's own manipulation of the wisdom that preceded him via his students in the Old Academy, Speusippus and Aristotle, and on to the Middle Platonic (Alcinous) and Neoplatonic (Plotinus, Proclus, Damascius) phases. An extensive section on Christian Platonism examines the Platonic appropriations of Cyril of Alexandria, as well as the great mediator of Plato in the Latin West, Marsilio Ficino, while the volume traces the influence of Platonic principles up to Heidegger. Key topics in this volume include time and eternity, the origin of evil, the planetary orbits, the status of nature, and theurgy. This Festschrift includes Gerson's intellectual autobiography in the light of Platonic principles, particularly as a justification for libertarianism.

This book explores China's unique approach to tackling poverty. Blending economic, social, political, cultural, and environmental strategies, it offers fresh insights into tackling poverty in all its forms.

Viewing poverty as a complex social phenomenon, the author first categorises the root causes of poverty in China into five types. In order to combat poverty, China has implemented various measures, including institutional reforms, infrastructure expansion, population relocation, and targeted support for ethnic groups. The focus has shifted from solutions dependent on external aid to a self-sustaining approach that empowers individuals and communities. The book documents China's experience of eradicating poverty with the support of social networks in rural areas, including cooperatives, mutual funds and community-based organisations, and illustrates how isolated individuals were transformed into cohesive groups capable of sustainable development. It also emphasises the importance of institutional innovation, cultural revitalisation, and social organisation for achieving long-term poverty reduction. Drawing on China's experience, the study provides a valuable framework for addressing global poverty and strategies for tackling its complex manifestations.

This book will be of interest to scholars, students, and policymakers studying development, international development, economics, political economy, and China's experience of poverty governance.

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) opened in 2016, as a US$100 billion multilateral development bank (MDB) financing public and private infrastructure projects for Asia. AIIB's investments in its first ten years totalled more than US$60 billion. Among its 110 approved members are countries in Asia and Oceania, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. In addition to highlighting key innovations from AIIB's first ten years in operation, the second edition of A Comparative Guide to the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank examines AIIB through the lens of its Charter, focusing on its mandate, investment operations, membership, finance, governance framework and decision-making, and institutional setup. Why these elements matter for MDBs is explained, followed by analysis of the AIIB Charter text, and comparison with its predecessors. The book begins with two chapters new to the second edition and largely new to the literature. The first delves into the legal origins of the 1945 World Bank Charter, finding its roots in the Bank for International Settlements in 1930 and a bank never established, the Inter-American Bank of 1940. The second chapter traces the adaptation of the World Bank Charter through other MDB charters, in the process telling the story of AIIB's founding. Uniquely, this book takes apart the AIIB Charter for the general reader and the specialist, from the perspective of the Chief Counsel who put it together. It's an inside look at how this new international organization went from concept to reality, and a handy legal guide to MDBs, newly updated in 2025.

This book surveys all the instances of revenge in the eight tragedies written by the Roman philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca. It focuses especially on the following six plays: Agamemnon, Phaedra, Medea, Troades, Hercules furens, and Thyestes. The most significant result of this survey is that most of the characters who desire revenge and enact it, or try to do so, are female. On this basis, the book argues that it is primarily through the revenge of female characters that Seneca interrogates the boundary between proportionate and excessive revenge and explores the problems inherent in like-for-like violence. It then goes on to highlight, and analyse, the connections between the parameters of revenge as depicted in the tragedies and the role of revenge in Seneca's Stoic philosophical treatise On Anger, emphasizing the extent to which revenge is central in both parts of the Senecan corpus, the tragedies and the philosophy. Finally, it presents an innovative argument in favour of the unity of the two parts of the corpus. This argument consists in showing how, both in the tragedies and in On Anger, Seneca incorporates elements of Stoic readings of Greek tragedy, and Euripides' Medea in particular, a tragedy which by Seneca's time already had a long reception history in Greco-Roman literature and philosophy. Medea's revenge is therefore a special case which proves essential not only for assessing properly the dynamics of revenge in Seneca's tragedies, but also for gaining a holistic understanding of Senecan revenge.

Development has long been a field of epistemic debate. Where do the ideas and knowledge that underpin the practices and approaches of international development come from? Who generates and who promotes them, and why? Do ideas really matter at all - or does the practice of development carry on 'business-as-usual' while conceptual fads come and go on grant applications? And crucially, how do these evolving ideas shape broader societal worldviews? This book investigates the creation, spread and contestation of ideas within global networks of development organizations and the communities they work with. To do so, it draws on multi-spatial ethnographies of two globally interconnected networks - one linking an American family foundation, Kenyan non-profits, community-based organizations, and grassroots activists, the other connecting a global foundation headquartered in Switzerland, Kyrgyz NGOs, and village working groups. Both networks revolve around ecological projects intended to support pastoralist communities affected by climate change, yet both engage in many other realms of knowledge, including understandings of the state, land rights, rural livelihoods, expertise, authenticity, participation, and development itself. Civil Society Knowledge Networks simultaneously traces the contestation and power of ideas, the epistemic inner-workings of international development, and linkages between global, meso, and local scales via development-focused civil society. It advances the concept of civil society knowledge networks to make sense of the way development can act as a vector for the diffusion of ideas and worldviews, and the ways in which development practice is itself shaped by this process. In so doing, the book challenges assumptions about the way power is distributed between development institutions and communities by tracing the way local actors can challenge the epistemic authority of elite global institutions by laying claim to categories of authenticity and legitimacy. The International Monetary Fund and World Bank were founded at the 1944 Bretton Woods conference on the premise that international cooperation and multilateralism would be to the benefit and enrichment of all. Yet, the establishment and evolution of the global financial architecture into its current form were not inevitable: this edited volume examines the "roads not taken" - critical junctures in the histories of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank - where the choices made, and the decisions taken, would have far-reaching consequences.

Geoeconomic fragmentation, nationalism, and extreme protectionism pose threats to the open trade and payments system and are jeopardizing the hard-won gains in global incomes and living standards driven by postwar trade and globalization. Against the urgent need to rekindle the Bretton Woods spirit of cooperation and multilateralism, while also reckoning with the shortcomings of the postwar international order as they were revealed over time, the authors of this volume turn to history for inspiration, lessons, and insights from both the roads taken and those left for another day. The book also demonstrates that future reform can be inspired by previous intellectual and theoretical efforts.

The book will be of great interest to readers interested in the past, present, and future of international monetary systems, economic governance, and international finance and banking more broadly.

This book offers strong rationales for adopting a critical view of health communication by demonstrating how theories and critical practices can be enriched by foregrounding issues of power, politics, and culture.

In health communication, critical approaches highlight the role of communication in constituting, reinforcing, and resisting inequitable power relations that underlie the sociocultural and structural barriers to well-being. This book highlights the theoretical and practical contributions of critical health communication to allow readers to gain in-depth understanding of the tools and methods required to conduct critical research. It includes a broad array of approaches to health communication scholarship such as rhetorical, feminist, anti-racist, and intersectional perspectives. Chapters present research from a variety of international and local contexts addressing medical and public health challenges and center issues of power, resistance, voice, and social change from marginalized perspectives.

Outlining the centrality of critical approaches to theorizing and practicing health communication in more equitable, ethical, and effective ways, this book will be of interest to scholars and graduate students in health communication, critical and cultural communication, as well as other health-related courses.

The development of Smart Cities (SC) is inextricably linked to the need to obtain financing for both current projects and long-term investments. Issues related to the financing of Smart Cities, raising funds, their capital structure or financing risks are underexplored and are described in a fragmented manner, with reference to individual initiatives or projects. This book argues that the creation of Smart Cities requires a long-term and holistic approach toward financing strategies. It systematizes the issues related to Smart City financing and develops a financing model that considers a lasting, systematic and complete approach to the development of Smart City solutions. It identifies the opportunities and risks associated with the various sources of financing and the risks of financing in the developed model and presents complex issues related to urban finance in a structured manner. The book characterizes project and collective financing (crowdfunding, associations and foundations), as innovative forms of fundraising and examines the cost of capital and risk vs. green and sustainable financing. The book is illustrated with accessible analyses and practical examples. This book is a comprehensive reference for students and scholars in the fields of public management, public finance and urban planning. It can also be used by both Smart City researchers and practitioners, such as representatives of city governments, municipal governments and local stakeholders, in the process of analyzing and selecting sources of financing for Smart City solutions.
