This book offers a compelling exploration of Margaret Thatcher's approach to European integration during the years of her premiership, providing a nuanced portrait of one of the most fascinating and influential political figures of recent decades.

Drawing on extensive archival research and featuring excerpts from speeches, private papers, statements, and interviews, this study reevaluates Thatcher's European legacy by revealing the complex evolution of her European policy during the 11 years of her premiership (1979-1990). Challenging conventional narratives, Zanetti deconstructs the image of Thatcher as the master of British Euroscepticism and precursor to Brexit, arguing instead that she was an asset to European integration - although in her own terms. Her approach was fundamentally guided by her primary role as British Prime Minister, adapting both rhetoric and action to secure national interests while engaging pragmatically with the European Community. Throughout her premiership, Thatcher consistently chose to fight difficult and unpopular battles on the European stage, positioning herself as a passionate and constructive critic whose vision for Europe's future was often divergent from that of other European leaders.

This work will appeal to students and scholars of European integration, British political history, and international relations, as well as anyone seeking to more accurately understand the complex relationship between Thatcherism and Brexit.

The 1960s in Europe saw the emergence of social protest, newly confident center-left parties, Cold War detente, and frustrations with the pace and direction of European integration. The Federal Republic of Germany experienced these upheavals from a special position: on the front line of the Cold War, occupying a key position in both the European and Atlantic communities, and haunted by Nazi-era crimes. The parties that had governed West Germany since its founding in 1949-the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU)-underwent an especially intense identity crisis. European integration and the social market economy were essential to Christian Democratic political identity, but both faced challenges from right and left. The CDU/CSU was torn between market liberalism and social solidarity, and between nationalist conservatism and European enthusiasm. Konrad Adenauer, the first West German Chancellor, led the CDU and CSU to two decades of political dominance. As Adenauer retired from active politics, however, the parties gradually lost their grip on national power and had to reorient themselves in a rapidly changing domestic and international political environment. Aspiring to appeal to the broad political center, and to advocate both for German reunification and European cooperation, both parties and their leaders, including Franz Josef Strauss and Helmut Kohl, struggled to stabilize the provisional Federal Republic within a divided Germany and a divided Europe, then to react to the challenges of detente between East and West, and finally to develop a coherent response to the revolutions of 1989 in which those divisions were swept away. Among the first books to place the development of the CDU/CSU within the larger context of West German politics and international relations during the late Cold War, Adenauer's Heirs explores still potent questions of political identity from the age of detente to the present day.

Contemporary scientific medicine is a new modern medicine-one shaped by new disease epidemics, new norms of evidence, and the new sciences of epidemiology. Jonathan Fuller provides a philosophical treatment of this new modern medicine, an epidemiological medicine that has dominated healthcare for decades. Epidemiological medicine is a model of medicine calibrated to the management of epidemic noncommunicable diseases such as cancers and chronic conditions, reliant on evidence from epidemiological studies such as clinical trials and infused with epidemiological thinking. The New Modern Medicine utilizes resources from the philosophy of science and the philosophy of medicine to examine disease and evidence in the new modern medicine, particularly problems brought about by the twentieth century integration of medicine with epidemiology. Fuller explores topics such as the nature and evolution of modern scientific medicine, theories of contagion and cancer, the causation and classification of disease, the nature of chronic diseases and mental disorders, evidence-based medicine and therapeutic prediction, medical interventions and concepts of risk, problems of extrapolating from clinical trials, biased evidence and therapeutic skepticism, the foundations of personalized medicine, as well as the signs and symptoms of a looming postmodern medicine.

Understanding why Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 and 2022 is vital for preparing for what may come next. This groundbreaking book is the first to provide an interdisciplinary study of the first full-scale war in Europe since 1945, which is having global ramifications on interstate relations, international law, international organisations, energy questions and economies. Written by two leading scholars of Ukrainian and Russian politics and history, and based on extensive field work and primary sources, the book moves beyond established Western ideas about Russia to show that Russian military aggression against Ukraine is domestically, not externally, driven. The authors analyse the statements and policies of the Russian leadership under Putin, Russia's post-communist political culture and Russia's understanding of itself as a civilisation without borders. Imperial nationalism, nostalgia, Russia's divergent identity and political system to Ukraine's, and Kremlin anti-Western xenophobia are the key elements underlying Russian aggression.

Hipparchus was the most important astronomer of the ancient Greek world. This volume provides a comprehensive introduction to almost everything that can be known or reasonably surmised about his life and work. Hipparchus was the first to apply an effective geometric model to the cosmos, which enabled him to predict the positions of the Sun, Moon and stars more reliably than before. He was also the first to catalogue most of the stars that were visible in the northern hemisphere, giving a detailed account of their risings, settings and culminations. His most important discovery was the long-term movement of the sky, known as precession. Crucially, this study provides a translation and analysis of Hipparchus' only surviving work, the Commentary on the Phenomena of Aratus and Eudoxus, and reconstructs his catalogue of the stars, which has not survived, using a modern precession model.

Female combatants are often central to rebel groups' outreach strategies, yet their impact on foreign support remains unclear. This Element examines how the presence of female fighters shapes international perceptions and support, drawing on original survey experiments in the United States and Tunisia as well as cross-national observational data. The findings demonstrate that foreign audiences are more likely to endorse government sponsorship of rebel groups with female combatants, perceiving them as more gender-equal, democratic, morally legitimate, and as less likely to harm civilians, even when they are agents of political violence. These favorable perceptions, in turn, increase the likelihood that democratic states will offer material support. In addition to establishing gender composition as a factor influencing external support in armed conflicts, this Element contributes to broader debates on the gender equality-peace nexus, humanitarian aid, rebel legitimacy, and gender stereotypes in nontraditional political spheres.

The Wilderness of the Infinite explores the emergence in the Latinate thirteenth century of original approaches to mathematical infinity and to unequal infinities. Within the span of twenty years (1220-1240), Robert Grosseteste and William of Auvergne countenanced the actual infinite and presented very original views on the possibility of comparing infinities. Robert Grosseteste postulated the existence of infinite numbers that measure the number of points in finite line segments. Until his proposal, no one in Western culture had operated with infinite numbers. Grosseteste's proposal led to debates on what criteria one should use when assigning 'sizes' to infinite collections with one-to-one correspondence being proposed as a challenge to the part-whole intuition defended by Grosseteste. But the book is not only about Robert Grosseteste, William of Auvergne, and their impact on medieval philosophy in the period up to 1275. Rather, the historical investigation is instrumental in showing that some of the daring ideas proposed by Grosseteste and William of Auvergne although criticized as naive, or even incoherent, by twentieth century investigators can be given a perfectly coherent development using some recent mathematical theories, namely non-standard analysis and the theory of numerosities. The book thus offers a methodological proposal on how to engage with the history and the philosophy of mathematical infinity.

The field of Strategic Studies, which studies the use and threat of force for political purposes, has seen the repeated rise of concepts to dominate discourses and research agendas, only to eventually fall to the margins again. What explains this cyclical pattern? What are the consequences for our understanding of war? Reconceptualizing War examines these questions by likening the coming and going of theories to fashions. While in vogue, fashionable concepts are used widely, becoming broader and vaguer until essentially stripped of meaning. At the same time, they are bestowed with authority and power that allows them to withstand criticism and marginalizes alternative perspectives. These characteristics severely affect the quality, depth, and diversity of research by narrowing and siloing the field of inquiry. Tracing three concepts--revolution in military affairs, counterinsurgency, and hybrid warfare--through their fashion lifecycle, Chiara Libiseller demonstrates how fashionability affects the concepts themselves, related research, and the field more generally. Embedded within a discussion of the history and dynamics of Strategic Studies, the book calls for more reflexivity in the study of war and strategy.

Science and Religion in the Imagination of C. S. Lewis is the first comprehensive examination of C. S. Lewis's views on the relationship between science and religion, authored by an internationally acclaimed writer recognized as an authority on both Lewis and the field of science and religion. It focuses on the literary depictions of this relationship and its significance in cultural discussions regarding the boundaries of human knowledge, as well as Lewis's understanding of the roles of science and religion in humanity's pursuit of meaning and significance. This study provides a rigorous and historically informed analysis of Lewis's perspective on the interplay between science and religion, drawing both on his studies of medieval and Renaissance literature and his literary and philosophical explorations of naturalism and materialism. In particular, it highlights the importance of the constructive role of the imagination (and not merely the analytic role of reason) in constructing an authentic 'model of the universe'. This work breaks new ground by exploring Lewis's appeal to scientific criteria for evaluation in his apologetics. This can be seen as a significant anticipation of the method now referred to as 'inference to the best explanation', which was not formally articulated until after Lewis's death. While some continue to characterize Lewis as an anti-scientific Luddite entrenched in medieval fantasies, this analysis makes it clear that Lewis was well-acquainted with both the cultural perceptions of science and religion during the medieval and Renaissance eras, as well as the major philosophical and cultural debates concerning their relationship during the middle of the twentieth century. It will be an essential introduction to both this important and understudied aspect of Lewis's thought, and to its relevance for the growing field of academic studies in science and religion.

Until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, America did not want war, with the 1930s marked by strong isolationism and an emphasis on defense. However, in December 1941, it wasn't defensive aircraft the Army Air Corps had been steadily procuring, but offensive long-range heavy bombers, whilst US pursuit planes were decidedly inferior to their European counterparts. In this new history of the development of American air power, Phillip Meilinger dispels the notion that young air zealots pushed for a bomber-heavy force, revealing instead the technological, economic and bureaucratic forces which shaped the air force. He examines the role of scientists and engineers, developments in commercial aviation, and conflicting priorities of the Army and Air Corps, as well as how these were in turn influenced by America's political leaders. Building an Air Force is essential for understanding a conflict in which whoever controlled the skies controlled the land and seas beneath.

Accountability Shock presents the first systematic explanation of why some 'Third Wave' democracies developed peacefully while others became the world's most violent. The book demonstrates how robust transitional justice processes - combining truth commissions with prosecution of autocratic-era atrocities - prevent criminal violence in new democracies. By holding authoritarian specialists in violence accountable, new democracies can break state impunity, preventing them from becoming key actors in the production of large-scale criminal violence and reshaping the logic of state coercion in democracy. With in-depth analyses of six Latin American cases, the work illuminates why transitional justice is crucial for addressing state-criminal collusion in hybrid contexts. Forged out of a close collaboration between transitional justice scholars and practitioners, Accountability Shock strengthens existing connections while offering practical insights for countries still grappling with authoritarian legacies and violence.

Erwin Schroedinger's What Is Life? is one of the most celebrated scientific works of the twentieth century. However, like most classics, it is far more often cited than read. Efforts to seriously engage with Schroedinger's arguments are rare. This Element explores how well his ideas have stood the test of time. It argues that Schroedinger's emphasis on the rigidity and specificity of the hereditary material (which stemmed from his attempt to explain biological order from physical principles) influenced how molecular biologists conceptualized macromolecules, resulting in a deterministic, engineering view of the cell that is still popular today-even if it is increasingly at odds with experimental findings. Drawing on archival sources, this Element also uncovers Schroedinger's motivations in writing What Is Life? and suggests that his biological proposals are best understood in the context of his longstanding dispute with other physicists regarding the interpretation and extension of quantum mechanics.

This sweeping history tells the story of contemporary Japan from its defeat in the Asia-Pacific War in 1945 until the early decades of the new millennium. How did the Japanese people deal with the collapse of its empire and the American-led occupation? What factors played into Japan's remarkable economic recovery and stunning affluence? How did democracy develop under the new pacifist constitution and long-term conservative rule? And how did Japanese society and culture reflect the extraordinary demographic transformations of the era? After a concise recap of events prior to 1945, historian Simon Avenell traces the country's early postwar recovery, its striking economic growth, the political and social struggles of the citizenry, the legacies of colonial empire and militarism, the profound demographic changes wrought by urbanization and affluence, the impact of regional and global entanglements, and the flowering of postwar culture. The content chapters are augmented by an introduction exploring the diverse historical interpretations of the era and its major themes, along with an epilogue pondering the prospects for Japan's postwar condition at our contemporary moment. The lively narrative is supported by a wealth of images, charts, tables, primary sources, and cutting-edge research. Drawing on recent historiography, the book presents Japan's postwar history both as a distinctive phase in the country's modern experience, as well as an era with deep connections to developments before 1945. A History of Postwar Japan will appeal to a broad readership, including undergraduates and general readers who want a comprehensive and compelling narrative of Japan's contemporary history.

For over a century, Japan has vexed and disappointed its Western allies by resisting their efforts to protect biodiversity. Consequently, foreign critics have long derided Japan as "the world's boldest eco-outlaw." Its animal protections are equally disappointing: comprehensive assessments by the World Animal Protection Index rank Japan among the worst in the developed world. Given Japan's close relationships with its foreign allies, its systemic disregard for wildlife conservation seems strangely out of character. Wildlife conservation, in fact, arguably stands as one of the greatest and most enduring sources of friction between Japan and the Western order. This enigma is neither easily understood nor rectified.

Loving and Loathing Wildlife in Japan explores Japan's complex relationship with wildlife conservation, an issue that currently challenges societies around the world. Tracing the topic from the seventeenth-century animal laws to the 1999 Act on the Welfare and Management of Animals, W. Puck Brecher examines the four dominant paradigms-compassionate control (pre-1868), utility (1868-1945), conservation (1868-1980), and welfare (1902-1999)-that have dictated how Japan has conceptualized and handled its engagements with wildlife. These paradigms span the broad range of political and attitudinal approaches adopted by modernizing Japan as it sought to manage its wildlife resources. Each offers a distinctive perspective on Japanese society, politics, and their relationship with the natural environment. Collectively, their historical arc invites readers to contemplate patterns that have variously advanced and hindered wildlife conservation, as well as potentials for future improvement. In doing so, the book illuminates historical contexts necessary to understand modern Japan's puzzling reputation as an environmental outlier and its struggle to reconcile tradition with environmental responsibility.

This Element discusses the central role of models within evolutionary biology, offering an accessible introduction and synthesis of literature in both evolutionary biology and the philosophy of models. We will examine three questions: first, what does it mean to be a 'model' and to engage in 'modelling'? Second, what types of models are employed within evolutionary biology? Third, how can models of evolution be tested? In exploring the answers to these questions, this Element hopes to highlight how evolutionary biology and philosophy of biology can usefully interact to understand conceptual and methodological problems arising from modelling evolution.

The analysis focuses on six case studies: the Reventazon hydropower plant and the Guanacaste tourism projects in Costa Rica, the Barro Blanco hydropower plant in Panama, the Bahia de Tela tourism area in Honduras, and the La India and La Libertad gold mines in Nicaragua. The book draws on extensive in-depth interviews, participatory workshops and surveys to demonstrate how different social groups interpret the impacts of megaprojects. It critically examines the tensions between externally-driven investment initiatives - and the values they promote - and locally-rooted worldviews, wellbeing and ways of life. The volume concludes with a practical workshop proposal to help communities strengthen their resilience and formulate alternative development pathways based on their own cultural and social frameworks.

This book will be of particular interest to scholars in the fields of development and Latin American studies, as well as policy makers and practitioners working in the region.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 shocked the world and overturned assumptions that large-scale conventional war was inconceivable in the twenty-first century. On the other side of the planet, democratic Taiwan faces the rising threat of a military takeover by China a conflict whose impact on the international community would be catastrophic.

Renowned Taiwan expert and former intelligence officer J. Michael Cole explains how this Pacific nation has become a tinderbox that could ignite a full-scale global conflict. Drawing on unparalleled access to Taiwanese government sources and two decades of on-the-ground observation, he explores the root causes of the conflict between Taiwan and China - from the identity politics that make "peaceful unification" inconceivable, to the rise of Xi Jinping, the most powerful and authoritarian Chinese leader since Mao Zedong. With in-depth analysis of how the war in Europe is influencing preparations by Beijing, Taipei, and Washington for a potential cross-Strait confrontation, The Taiwan Tinderbox is an impassioned plea for the defense of Taiwan as a priority for the international community and the future of democracy.

This book uses the case of football fandom in Hong Kong to shine new light on the globalization of sport and culture, and on the intersection of culture and society in a postcolonial territory. Based on in-depth interviews, textual analysis, and survey data, the book explores the lived experience of football fans in Hong Kong.

Using the theoretical framework of 'banal cosmopolitanism,' the book explains how elite men's football from Europe, particularly the English Premier League, became extremely popular in the city when live TV broadcasts became more frequent in the 1990s. It argues that although football fandom in Hong Kong has been hugely transformed by globalization, how it has changed has to be understood in local context. The book also reveals how Hong Kong's colonial legacy is manifested in the English Premier League's popularity in the city and in the rapid decline of professional men's football in Hong Kong, which tells an important story about the relationship between sport, culture, and globalization in the early 21st century.

This is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the sociology or culture of sport, football, globalization, or the history, culture or politics of Asia.

This biography traces the extraordinary story of the Molteno family coming from an Anglo-Italian origin, whose legacy helped shape South African political and social life from the 19th century onward. At its centre stands Sir John Charles Molteno, the first prime minister of the Cape Colony, who fiercely defended South African interests against British colonial authority. Of his 19 children, five left a distinct imprint on history: Betty, a passionate political activist; Percy, a Liberal MP in the British Parliament; Charlie, a defender of Black voters' rights; James, Speaker of both the Cape and Union parliaments; and Barkly, a naval commander at the Battle of Jutland. Spanning continents and generations, the book chronicles their shared fight against racism, imperialism, and segregation-long before such ideas gained wider currency. A timely account of a remarkable family committed to justice, reform, and public service.

Appeals to readers of political history, African studies, and biography, offering rare insights into a family that worked to unify and uplift a fractured society.

  • Introduces the rich historical biography of a multigenerational South African family with Anglo-Italian roots and deep political impact.

This book examines the aftermath of eSwatini's fiftieth anniversary of independence and the COVID-19 pandemic, when many citizens of this last absolute monarchy in Africa took to their communities in unprecedented protests for democratic reform. For raising their voices, they were met with brutal police violence. Customary Nationalism in Crisis offers snapshots of life in the Kingdom leading up to and in the aftermath of this epic moment, providing lessons to the world on the power of the government to shape our lives through the guise of custom and tradition and the power of ordinary people to resist this.

Through a range of research written primarily by scholar-nationals of eSwatini, the book shows how ordinary women, men, and young people redefine language and their identities-ethnic, racial, and gender-and question what it means to be a citizen, from their classrooms to clinics, and from their workplaces to the halls of Parliament. Customary Nationalism in Crisis shows that, despite the persistence of authoritarianism, citizens also adapt over the long-term to survive and thrive.

This volume will appeal to scholars and students in African studies, political science, anthropology, sociology, and gender studies, as well as policymakers, human rights advocates, and development practitioners interested in southern Africa.

The chapters in this volume were originally published as a special issue of Journal of Contemporary African Studies.

This book analyses the internalization of conflict in the minds of children living and growing up in the Kashmir valley, and its effect on their identity formation and Schooling. It integrates the socio-cultural, socio-political, geo-political, and psycho-social contexts to understand the unfolding of childhood amidst conflicts.

This volume highlights the socio-cultural context, amidst which children live in Kashmir, which influences the way they look at, interpret, and give meaning to their everyday environment-be it rural, urban, peaceful, violent, or within or away from family. This forms a significant part of how children's lives are negotiated in Kashmir. It deliberates upon the interplay between conflict, education, and identity during the childhood years, especially since the traditional education systems tend to neglect the experiences of children amidst conflict. It also explores how children imitate, observe, and reflect on the conflicts in their surroundings.

The book will interest scholars and researchers from the departments of education, sociology, social work, political science, peace and conflict studies, and South Asian studies.

The Oxford Handbook of South American Archaeology offers a comprehensive summary of recent research on the prehistory of the continent--from its early peopling to the material manifestations of modern political repression. Organized around eight themes derived from anthropological theory, historical perspectives, and contemporary social issues, most of its seventy-seven chapters are written by local scholars who are experts in their research domains. The Handbook's geographic coverage ranges from the Caribbean Sea to Tierra de Fuego, with special attention paid to the Amazon basin, where major new discoveries throughout the twenty-first century have radically transformed our understanding of this region's prehistory. There are also chapters that examine the continent's colonial era, which include archaeological studies of missions, African slavery, and extractive industries. Other topics covered include Indigenous archaeology, multivocality in service of archaeological interpretation, calls for the decolonization of archaeological practice, feminist perspectives on the struggle of women to achieve parity in the discipline, and a re-examination of the roles that museums can play in working for social change. The result is a thorough exploration of the current landscape of South American archaeology, as well as a call for new compromises that might contribute to the preservation of this continent's cultural heritage--and, hopefully, help us better anticipate social, environmental, and political crises in the future.

Barry Buzan is one of Europe's most prolific scholars of international relations, renowned for his interdisciplinary collaborations and commitment to making complex ideas accessible. This volume features a detailed analysis of his practised 'big picture' approach and its value to the international relations discipline, as well as related social science disciplines. It starts with an explication of the intellectual project of Barry Buzan over his long career, the development of his thinking in relation to the big picture and the style of research he engages in. The contributors then use this as a stepping stone to reflect on the broader value of the big picture approach, taking their point of departure in five scholarly fields: international relations theory, the English School, world history, international security studies and international political economy. In the concluding chapter, Barry Buzan reflects on the undertaking and the path forward.

The traumatic Spanish invasion of Mesoamerica, and the Ibero-Catholic colonialism that followed, truly transformed Indigenous political, economic, and socio-cultural practices. Confronted by dogmatic European literary regimes, strident indoctrination, and acts of structural violence, how could 'Aztec' education have survived in colonial times? An Unholy Pedagogy rethinks education studies by centering discussions on Indigenous visions of learning that shaped schooling throughout the sixteenth century. Joshua Jacob Fitzgerald tracks education systems before the Spanish-Catholic invasion, examining the writings, art, and architecture of Nahua communities. He analyses Nahuatl primary sources and historical art and archaeological sources, focusing especially on materials produced by Indigenous and Indigenous-Christian artists and scribes. This fascinating interdisciplinary study reveals the ways that Nahua students transformed pedagogy, shaped learning, and preserved local knowledge.

This book unpacks the complexities of social development in India, focusing on the institutional bottlenecks that hinder effective policy implementation.

While governments and organizations design ambitious policies for economic growth, human capital development, education, agriculture, and social welfare, their impact is often diluted due to governance inefficiencies, bureaucratic inertia, and weak last-mile service delivery. Through a blend of empirical and evidence-based research, policy analysis, and real-world case studies, the book provides a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms that drive - or obstruct - sustainable development in India. It explores pressing socio-economic issues, such as demographic shifts, sustainable futures, workforce dynamics, digital governance, e-markets, bureaucracy, and gender-based violence. The book serves as a vital resource for those seeking to understand governance challenges and the institutional reforms necessary for meaningful change. By highlighting both the problems and potential solutions, it fosters a dialogue on creating resilient and inclusive institutions that can effectively deliver on their promise of social progress.

Part of the Innovations, Practice and the Future of Public Policy in India series, this volume will be of interest to policymakers, policy practitioners, researchers, development practitioners, and engaged citizens, particularly as we move towards a tech-savvy public sector. It will be an essential resource for students and researchers of development studies, sociology, public policy and governance, economics, and South Asian studies.

This book explores South Asia's postcolonial politics through the lens of circulatory networks-of objects, people, and ideas-as the region navigated pivotal historical junctures. The contributors reexamine epochal moments in South Asia's international relations, including the Second World War, the 1947 Partition, and the 1971 Liberation War, drawing insights from social history, memory studies, and popular discourses. Through thematic case studies, the historically informed contributions illuminate the complex entanglements between elite and everyday politics. By investigating diverse sites-borderlands, diaspora communities, battlefields, memorials, visual archives, and personal chronicles-the volume demonstrates how practices of remembering, forgetting and commemorating are intrinsic to the region's ongoing identity formation. The folding of time, colonial with postcolonial, is repeatedly brought home in these contributions. This nuanced engagement with the international realm reveals how macro-politics and micro-histories are inextricably linked in South Asia's postcolonial experience.

This volume will appeal to students and scholars across multiple fields, including International Relations, political science, history, South Asian studies, postcolonial studies, memory studies, and cultural studies. Researchers and policy analysts working on South Asia and interested in the intersection of identity politics, historical memory, and state formation will find the book's theoretical and historical framing of South Asian politics particularly valuable.

The chapters in this book were originally published in India Review.
