This 3-volume set examines how suburban spaces shape and reflect human experiences in North America, Europe, and Asia, bringing together works by an international group of scholars who explore suburbia through critical analyses of literature, culture, sociology, history, politics, and urban planning. The multidisciplinary and international scope of each volume offers readers a wide breadth of perspectives. Suburbia Reconsidered thus contributes significantly to the expanding field of suburban studies by offering novel insights into the representation of suburbs in literature, the cultural significance of suburban environments, and the socio-economic challenges confronting suburban communities across the globe.

Volume 3 of this 3-volume set addresses multiple dimensions of suburban social and political life, as well as planning and history. Contributors explore such themes as race and class exclusion, the relationship of eugenics to suburban planning, environmental impacts and activism in suburbia, and the influence of Cold War geopolitics on suburban planning. Some essays use history to explore implications for future suburban development, around such themes as environmental policy and multiracial suburban community building. These works use case studies to illustrate opportunities for creating more inclusive, sustainable, and culturally vibrant suburban spaces.

By integrating insights from literature, cultural studies, sociology, history, and urban planning, Suburbia Reconsidered enhances our understanding of suburban spaces and their potential for positive transformation, and encourages scholars to explore new methodologies and perspectives.

Given the theological significance of the state of Israel for many evangelicals worldwide, the existence of a population of Palestinian evangelicals seems counterintuitive at first. This small population shares with global evangelicals many common markers of evangelicalism, but due to their Palestinian identity, has a difficult relationship both to the Israeli state and to the powerful Christian Zionist populations in the United States and elsewhere. In an incisive ethnographic analysis of the encounter between Palestinian and Western evangelicals, Palestinian Evangelicals and Global Evangelicalism portrays what Christian Zionism looks like in practice, and what theological alternatives might be offered by Palestinian evangelicals intimately affected by this practice in their everyday lives. It argues that the complex processes of Palestinian evangelical positioning acutely highlight how the powers of evangelical orthodoxy interact with the economic, social, and political powers of the modern state, particularly as it controls and disciplines its populations in accordance with its desired national project. Palestinian evangelicals highlight critical fault lines of powerful geopolitical, national, and religious ideologies. While small in number, they offer a unique perspective to better understand the Israel-Palestine conflict. By developing a new conceptualization of global evangelicalism that recognises the unequal interactions between its constitutive parts, this book seeks to contribute to the emerging calls for the decolonization of the anthropology of global Christianity.

This book summarizes three decades of research in Iberian and Latin American anthropometric history, employing the most up-to-date methodologies in the field. Through a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, it examines the evolution of biological living standards in several Iberian and Latin American populations during the contemporary era, drawing on anthropometric data and its key determinants. The volume comprises nine long-term country studies-Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, and Spain-alongside an introduction and a comparative analysis. Being recognized experts on this field of study, the authors collectively display the knowledge gained in Anthropometric History in last twenty years.

This edited collection highlights the value of anthropometric indicators for analyzing living standards and human well-being from a historical perspective and demonstrates the importance of interdisciplinary research in understanding human growth and biological welfare. Its findings explore the determinants of human physical development through various historical transitions, including nation-state formation, economic growth, and the expansion of public goods, as well as the long-term evolution of inequality in biological living standards across Iberian and Latin American contexts.

Building and expanding on the literature of case studies of urban commons that have emerged which question the development of urban commons theories and concepts and identify results and contradictions, this edited collection progresses our understanding of the different aspects, characteristics, challenges, contradictions and potential of the urban commons in Italy.

Presenting different case studies of urban commons and socially innovative and democratic practices in Italian cities, the chapters analyse the different contexts and specific political and socio-economic needs that are being addressed. Uncovering the motivations, discourse and actions of the different actors involved as well as the dynamics among them, the authors investigate negotiating with commons actors and the state involving conflict, negotiation and collaboration, as well as the relationship with the surrounding urban environment and local institutions and how they intertwine. In which ways do the urban commons and their socially innovative governance challenge the urban development model? In which manners do urban commons initiatives advance the right to the city? How do territorial and local communities contribute to the creation and diffusion of social innovation, recognising its structuring effect?

With chapters written by scholars with expertise in urban studies, sociology and political science, this collection is a multidisciplinary effort needed to fully understand an evolving phenomenon in social sciences. It is an important contribution to theoretic debates on the urban commons in Italy, wider Europe, and beyond.

This book covers the period from the approach of Allied and Soviet armies to the Reich frontiers in late summer 1944 right up to the final collapse in May 1945. With Nazi Germany facing invasion and eventual defeat, Nazi broadcasters now had the insoluble task of having to perform a tightrope act between holding on to 'normality', at odds with outside reality, and of running the risk of losing all trust among listeners. Access to the BBC Monitoring Reports enabled a detailed account of domestic broadcasting during the very last weeks, including the Flensburg spell. In this unprecedented situation facing the Reich, the principal focus lies in radio policy and tactics, as echoed in the conferences held in the Radio Department of the Propaganda Ministry, the programmes themselves, and the response of German listeners to the programmes. Detailed attention is paid to two insurmountable hurdles undermining the entire broadcasting effort: reception problems; and the illegal practice of tuning into enemy and neutral stations. In addition, there are detailed accounts of the controversy surrounding the broadcast of purported 'jazz', as well as Nazi radio's handling of the final wartime Christmas. Two surprising elements of the final months are also examined: the partial resumption of religious broadcasting; and the short-lived station, Radio Werewolf. In short, the period covered provides a fascinating case study in wartime broadcasting in a totalitarian state when all seemed lost and defeat only a matter of time.

Animals pervade the books of Samuel. Though their presence often goes unnoticed, they are integral players in the society narrated. What's more, they are caught up in societal power dynamics and are treated in ways that intersect with the treatment of marginalized humans, such as women, foreigners, and children. Working with a robust analytic framework, Animals, Power, and Intersectionality in the Books of Samuel draws on scholars of animal studies, power, and intersectionality, to examine selected texts from the books of Samuel to highlight these oft-overlooked players. Suzanna Millar shows how animals are utilized by certain humans in their power-play as their deaths are ritualized through sacrificial killing; killings which have pivotal significance in the shifts of power between Eli, Samuel, and Saul. It explores how animals are subordinated alongside certain humans, as both groups are taken by kings vying for power: animals and humans are plundered, taxed, and stolen by kings like David as they develop, consolidate, and abuse their sovereignty. The book further considers how animals can become images to represent certain humans; specifically, they become implicated in the construction and delegitimization of the masculinities of Goliath, Absalom, and Mephibosheth. Finally, it examines how animals interact with certain humans in specific times and places and thereby might express their own agency and power (though they are recursively brought back under human control). In these and other ways, Millar robustly demonstrates the role of animals in the intersectional power dynamics of Samuel.

The Dark Forest Theory of the Internet investigates how intelligence-human and artificial-manifests under conditions of secrecy, hostility, and concealment.

Departing from Chinese science fiction writer Liu Cixin's dark forest theory, which frames the universe as a hostile terrain filled with predators where transparent communication is foolish and dangerous, the book portrays the internet as a cosmic war machine, teeming with existential tension, nascent AI cults, and deceptive superintelligences. It maps a digital world in which deception is safety, silence is strategy, and new forms of intelligence emerge through obfuscation.

Against decades of writing that moralizes or diagnoses online life, this book suggests a colder thesis: that intelligence itself is mutating under pressure, learning to hide, mislead, and manipulate. Humans are both predator and prey in this digital ecosystem of information exchange whose purpose reverberates on a cosmic scale, weaving us into inescapable patterns of violence. When we break with the ideals of dialogue and open expression, what forms of intelligence and morality survive in their absence? Intelligence does not reward the loudest voice, but the most secretive presence. The future belongs to the quietest signal.

Presents a transformative journey through Christian doctrine

William Lane Craig's Systematic Philosophical Theology is a multi-volume explication of Christian doctrine in the classic Protestant tradition of the loci communes as seen through the lens of contemporary analytic philosophy. Uniquely blending the disciplines of biblical theology, historical theology, and analytic theology, these volumes aim to provide readers with a biblical and philosophically coherent articulation of a wide range of Christian doctrines.

In Volume III, Craig continues his ambitious project of constructing a comprehensive, interdisciplinary theological system by exploring the doctrines of creation and humanity. Building on the metaphysical groundwork laid in the preceding volume concerning the existence and nature of God, Volume III investigates the implications of divine reality for everything that exists apart from God-particularly creation and human nature. Here, theology is not approached in isolation but in dialogue with contemporary philosophical reflection and cutting-edge scientific research, resulting in a work that speaks both to traditional theological concerns and modern intellectual contexts.

Volume III is distinctive in its integration of theological loci-De creation and De homine-with insights from disciplines often underrepresented in systematic theology, including organic chemistry, evolutionary biology, neurology, and paleoanthropology. The treatment of topics such as divine providence, human origins, and the Imago Dei is shaped not only by philosophical rigor and biblical exegesis but also by a robust Molinist framework.

  • Promotes a synoptic Christian worldview that speaks to both faith and reason
  • Bridges the gap between historical theological method and modern empirical inquiry
  • Contributes to a diverse theological landscape with fresh perspectives on traditional concepts
  • Provides a unique resource for theologians, philosophers, and scholars interested in science-faith integration
  • Includes excursuses on the origin and evolution of life and the historical Adam

Offering a clear and structured exposition of complex theological and philosophical topics, Systematic Philosophical Theology, Volume III, is ideal for graduate and advanced undergraduate students studying philosophy of religion, theology, or apologetics. It serves as a core or supplementary text for courses in systematic theology, philosophical theology, and Christian doctrine, and is an invaluable reference for scholars, theologians, and religious philosophers seeking a deeper understanding of the rational foundations of Christian theism.

Fosters deep inter-faith understanding through shared scriptural study and mutual religious hospitality

Scriptural Reasoning: Abrahamic Inter-faith Practice provides an accessible and practical introduction to a unique form of inter-faith engagement centered on shared sacred text study. Rather than minimizing deep commitments to one's own faith, this approach encourages participants to enter more fully into their own traditions while offering and receiving hospitality across religious boundaries. Focusing on the Abrahamic faiths-Judaism, Christianity, and Islam-this book equips students and lay practitioners to participate meaningfully in Scriptural Reasoning (SR) groups, where members of different faiths read and reason together from their respective Scriptures.

The authors-scholars and practitioners from the three traditions-guide readers through the origins, aims, and methods of SR while offering theological context, practical guidance, and real-world examples. Chapters explore common questions about the nature of Scripture, revelation, interpretation, and the challenges and promises of inter-religious study. Designed for classroom use, religious institutions, or community initiatives, this concise and clear resource helps participants "hit the ground running." By grounding the practice in deep respect, conviction, and curiosity, the authors position Scriptural Reasoning as a tool not only for dialogue, but for healing and reconciliation across difference.

Encouraging cross-faith understanding in a world marked by religious plurality and social fragmentation, Scriptural Reasoning:

  • Provides the foundation for understanding, practicing, and reflecting on Abrahamic Scriptural Reasoning
  • Contains tools and texts for launching SR in classroom, religious, and civic settings
  • Includes foundational background on the Scriptures and interpretive traditions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
  • Addresses common questions and misconceptions about inter-faith engagement and religious pluralism
  • Features real-world examples of SR used in diverse contexts, from prisons to hospitals to inter-faith dialogue programs

Combining theological reflection with practical instruction for first-time SR facilitators and participants, Scriptural Reasoning: Abrahamic Inter-faith Practice is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students in theology, religious studies, and interfaith engagement programs. It can be used in courses such as Interfaith Dialogue, Comparative Religion, and Abrahamic Traditions, and is appropriate for degrees in divinity, religious studies, and civic leadership.

The use of a Book of Common Prayer has been a hallmark of Anglicanism, resulting in a liturgical language that shapes doctrine. What began as a single Book of Common Prayer in sixteenth-century England has developed into a family of prayer books authorized by member churches of the global Anglican Communion. The Oxford Handbook of the Book of Common Prayer offers a holistic view of the prayer-book tradition in Anglicanism and explores new directions emerging in the Communion. Written by forty-six diverse Anglican scholars from throughout the world, it analyzes historic and more recent editions bearing that title in churches throughout the Anglican Communion, as well as modern books that fulfill the same function, to aid understanding and practices of worship in Anglicanism. The Handbook begins with an exploration of the Book of Common Prayer in context, assessing its colonial legacy and exploring the significance of the book for Anglican identity. It considers inculturation of worship and cultural differences in the texts of the books and in the use and interpretation of the books. Themed sections cover the language of the Book of Common Prayer, including questions of translation and inclusive and expansive language, and worship space, rubrics, and music. Other sections consider theologies and practices of the liturgical year, Christian initiation (baptism, confirmation, admission to communion), services of the word (daily offices and eucharist), ordination and ministry, and pastoral offices. While many of the chapters introduce historical background, the focus in this volume is the interpretation and use of contemporary Prayer Books, with attention to the impact of the twentieth-century Liturgical Movement. Since the 1980s, Anglicans have met through the International Anglican Liturgical Consultation to consider principles for liturgical revision and to share news of developments in their home Provinces, and this book takes note of the findings of these consultations.

Videogame culture is obsessed with development. But gaming is still widely associated with wasted time, squandered potential and backwards attitudes. Even as the average gamer grows older, the medium remains dogged by the same old question: when will videogames grow up? The Gamergate movement lent this question renewed urgency, launching attacks on feminists and "social justice warriors" that have come to be seen as a catalyst for the emergence of the alt-right and election of Donald Trump. This book explores how makers of independent and experimental videogames responded to Gamergate and its aftermath. Analysing key titles released between 2015 and 2018, it shows how artgame designers used assets, characters and mechanics scavenged from classic franchises like Zelda, Street Fighter and Sonic the Hedgehog to review gaming's history, reframe their own biographies and link gaming's growing pains to a broader sense of disorientation, disillusionment and decline in American culture.

This book examines AI's transformative impact on creativity, blending insights from economics, media studies, and technology to analyze its role in the arts and the broader creative industries. AI challenges the way we relate and use technology, as well as expand how we think of technological progress overall. Structured in three parts, the book first rethinks creativity as an inclusive, collaborative process through theories like Actor-Network-Theory, arguing AI is a new form of agency within creative networks. It explores the economic drivers of AI adoption, citing industry forecasts, long term trends and the rise of what sociologist Richard Florida calls the "Creative Class". Through critical analysis of the gaps between the rhetoric and realities of AI, the text advocates for "Augmented Creativity", as the right approach to balance human-AI collaboration. Lastly, the book studies pragmatic scenarios for 2035, focusing on job shifts, AI-generated content, and artistic experimentation-avoiding speculative AI hype. By grounding debates in real-world impacts, the book urges a critical, yet nuanced view of AI that ensures it remains a potential agent for collaboration rather than a replacement of human skill and imagination.

Technology has advanced significantly over the past 200 years, but have ideas about gender and technology also changed over time? Are modern technologies gendered?

In this comprehensive text, Holly Kruse explores how notions of gender and technology have been socially constructed. Organized historically, the book provides a broad overview of global developments in technology and how these technologies have been (ideologically) gendered. Focusing on communication and media technologies and analysing an array of household and workplace devices, the text examines the ways in which they have been considered "feminine" or "masculine". These associations, as the text reveals, often have little to do with the complexity of the technology. Rich with historical and contemporary examples - from bicycles and washing machines to the telegraph and the computer - Gender and Technology encourages us to take a closer look at how and why modern technologies are gendered. By understanding the origins of our ideas about gender and technology, we can see how they have and have not changed over time.

This text is essential reading for undergraduates taking courses on gender and technology, and will be of interest to general readers who want to learn more about the historical relationship between gender and technology.

The presence of intelligent tools, both in the digital and physical realms, is progressively enhancing our capacities to act on personal, organizational, national, and international levels, leading to both intended and unintended consequences. Collectively, these changes are reshaping our world at a speed and scale that necessitate earnest consideration. In the midst of uncertainty, the development and utilization of these new capabilities would greatly benefit from CyberSystemic approaches and methods of learning.

The book drives readers to adopt a different - CyberSystemic approach, moving beyond perceiving individuals merely as subjects or consumers to recognizing them as citizens. This shift implies an active role in constructing organizations and social policies as conversational networks wherein individuals collectively contribute to the formulation of purposes and products. The editors put forward concepts and examples that illuminate and exemplify these perspectives on citizenship in organizational and social contexts.

Readers will discover several conceptual frameworks and usage cases of CyberSystemic methodologies in various fields, providing the first look at the latest development of the grey methodology and the AI relation to individuals and governance and will provide the first discussion on the General Interactions theory.

This book provides a synthesis of Late Neolithic / Early Chalcolithic imagery from South-Central Anatolia, encompassing both Central Anatolia and the Lake District. It explores the nature of transformations and continuities in imagery during the period between 6500-5500 BC. The author examines three main categories of artifacts - pottery, figurines and stamp seals - to trace the presence and transformation of particular images in time.

The Neolithic site of Catalhoeyuek (7100- 5950 BC) in Central Anatolia is renowned for its elaborate art found inside the houses. A wide variety of anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and geometric motifs and themes were reproduced on wall paintings, reliefs and mobile objects. The author addresses the question of what happened with the repertoire of motifs in the upper levels of Catalhoeyuek and after its abandonment, and what circumstances might have been related to this transformation. To reassess the imagery, data was collected from Late Neolithic levels at Catalhoeyuek investigated by the Polish team since 2001, as well as from four intensively excavated sites from the Lakes region: Hacilar, Kurucay, Hoeyuecek and Bademagaci. The author applies the semiotic perspective of American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce, which they argue is a useful framework for discussing the imagery and its transformation over time. The analytical model used is the so-called replication, which allows grasping the diachronic changes. It has never been applied to studies on Neolithic / Chalcolithic imagery.

In this book, the leading Brazilian cultural theorist Flora Suessekind analyses the turbulent recent history of Brazil. She examines the protests which erupted in Brazil in 2013 and the ways that these were appropriated by the extreme right, and she shows how these developments expressed a break from and threat to the democratic orientation and social pact represented by the 1988 constitution, a collective achievement after decades of dictatorship. She also shows how these events contributed and pointed to the rise of a culture of intolerance, bringing this to bear upon literary and artistic production.

Suessekind's original concept of the chorus, understood not simply as a musical or theatrical category but as a structural force in culture, enables her to highlight the critical potential of cultural production and its power to redirect the course of events. She argues that it was during Brazil's recent history that the choral inflection emerged as a structuring force in culture. By documenting the dramatic shift in literary and artistic production from 2013 to the present day, Suessekind presents a sophisticated cartography for understanding literary and artistic production within a culture of dissent.

This innovative book will be of value to anyone interested in Latin American studies, literary and cultural studies and the history and politics of Brazil.

This monograph examines the appropriation and ludification of the Germanic heroic tradition in video games as a digital medium, a process that unfolds on the margins of official discourse about the early Middle Ages. The project analyzes the adaptation of medieval material to the video game format through the use of Germanic epic motifs, such as the configuration of the hero, his conflict with the antagonist, and the pursuit of fame and wealth, derived from the medieval written sources that inspire them. Using narratology, the author evaluates the remediation of these narratives in video games as a playful, digital, and immersive experience.

Allegory has been variously defined as a literary genre, a mode of interpretation, and a symbolic dimension to all language. Although 'allegory' historically escapes easy definition, it can be broadly defined as a mode of communicating that says one thing and means another. Allegory arguably functions by means of a distinction between the surface level of communication and a further level or levels of significance beyond the surface. The term 'allegory' has historically been used both of a mode of writing or representation and of a mode of reading and interpretation. Allegorical writing is found throughout history in a wide variety of literary forms and traditions. This Handbook reflects the diversity of literature in which allegory occurs, including genres such as medieval drama, Romantic poetry, and the postcolonial novel. It addresses both key texts typically thought of as allegories (such as Piers Plowman, The Pilgrim's Progress, and Animal Farm), and allegorical motifs and tendencies present in works not usually labelled as allegories, such as the novels of Dickens and the drama of Beckett. The Handbook also explores forms of allegorical representation beyond written texts, including visual art and film. In addition, the volume traces the history of allegorical reading and interpretation (often known as allegoresis), which has had immense cultural significance, especially in the case of sacred texts such as the Bible, but also, for instance, in the edifying readings of Greek myths and legends. This Handbook tackles a topic that is by its nature global, transhistorical, and interdisciplinary, and its coverage reflects that breadth of appeal, starting with Plato's myth of the cave and finishing with the 2015 Disney/Pixar film Inside Out. It draws upon, and makes contributions to, fields including literary studies, film studies, art history, mathematics, classics, theology, and cognitive science. It features both traditional topics of discussion in relation to allegory (such as rhetoric, personification, and typology) and innovative new approaches (such as ecocritical and phenomenological readings), offering a kaleidoscope of perspectives to illuminate the ongoing resonance of allegory's 'other-speaking' to the present.

This book reframes trauma as not just a response to violence but a structural condition of queer subjectivity-an aesthetic, affective, and epistemological impasse. Through provocative readings of literature, film, music, and performance, the contributors expose how trauma disorients narrative, troubles identity, and resists the consolations of resolution. Urgent and uncompromising, this book offers a bold rethinking of trauma's role in queer theory, literary studies, and cultural critique.

This book is a new and original study of High Church activism in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Focusing on the church union movement, it describes and explains unprecedented levels of clerical-lay cooperation in campaigns of Church defense, responses to contemporary pressures inside the Church, and efforts to mitigate problems in Church-state relations. It explores the leadership role of the London Union on Church Matters and the main factors that shaped its activities, especially Tractarianism, the sense that the Church did not have a sufficiently strong representative voice in debates about questions that directly affected it, and political and social developments that threatened the status and influence of the Church.

This book argues that the songs on Bob Dylan's John Wesley Harding are deeply concerned with the fractures in collective memory and politics contemporary with its composition and recording. The songs are thorough investigations of the ethics of memory in America. Critics and curators frame this song series as a "return to" Dylan's folk roots and as a "retreat from" the political. Specifically, critics argue that Dylan, on this album, retreats from the explicitly political into the realm of timeless, universal moral concerns (as if these discourses can be so separated). The present book seeks to remedy these oversights and illuminate the reception of Dylan's songwriting art. The summer of 1967 was understood (by white, middle-class young people) as "The Summer of Love." For African Americans, 1967 was understood as "The Long, Hot Summer" of racial tension and rioting. Dylan's aversion to "The Summer of Love" is well documented and John Wesley Harding is understood by critics as yet another step by Dylan away from his audience's desires. This book examines what the album's provocation entails; it asserts that the album is a reckoning with the tensions in American memory and history that subtend the explosive "Long, Hot Summer." The book deploys a method informed by poststructuralism ( especially the work of Jacques Derrida) to a.) dismantle the notion of original and authentic forms and histories to which one can return and b.) explain how this ironic dismantling expresses a deeply felt ethical response to American memory and its discontents. In so doing, the book asks how art can respond to our chaotic and strife-ridden century.

This broad-ranging book draws on Freudian and post-Freudian theory to offer a new and original perspective on courtly love from its origins in eleventh-century Occitania to its transformation into conflicting chivalric and courtly discourses in the later Middle Ages. Comparative and transnational in scope, it explores the role of masculinity and violence in the romance, love lyric and saints' lives written in French, English, German, and Czech between 1200 and 1400. Whereas conventional studies of medieval courtly love have emphasized the positive and idealistic relationship between the knight and the lady, this book highlights the dark side of medieval masculinity and how displaced male violence toward women and male masochism in these texts are transfigured into more explicit violence in modern horror films.

This book is about "zero generation" witness literature: texts written by those who died in the Holocaust and who knew, at the time of their writing, that they would not survive. As such, they offer a unique perspective that differs from the more widely read and taught literature written by first generation survivors like Elie Wiesel and Primo Levi. These texts were produced across the concentrationary universe and include: the ghetto diaries of Dawid Sierakowiak (Lodz) and Chaim Kaplan (Warsaw); transit camp work, such as the paintings of Felix Nussbaum (Saint-Cyprien) and the poetry of Yitchak Katznelson (Vittel); anonymous letters thrown from cattle cars; Sonderkommando writing and photography from Auschwitz; non-Jewish letter-writing from Gestapo prisons by Helmuth-James and Freya Von Moltke (Tegel); and the literary work of Hannah Szenes, from her diaries in Palestine to her last poetry and letter in a Budapest prison the day of her execution.

This book evaluates emergent forms of musical virtuosity within American musical cultures during the age of electronic media, a period spanning from 1920-when radio became a household technology and sound recording and playback both gradually became electrified-down to the present. Rather than focusing on instruments that arose during this period-electric guitars, midi controllers, or turntables, for example-this book explores how electronic mediation shapes the experience of virtuosity, even if the music or the instruments used might have been quite at home in earlier centuries. The wide array of genres addressed in this book motivates its project of theorizing virtuosities that differ from the dominant nineteenth-century model. Although many forms of virtuosity are intelligible when viewed through this lens, it is incapable of illuminating the myriad ways that people present, encounter, and value musical skill in the age of electronic media. Drawing on phenomenology and scholarly voices from multiple disciplines, this book defines virtuosities as skills made apparent and socially meaningful, offering an approach that accounts for the persistent role of mediation and the diffusion of agency and authority that accompanies it.

This book proposes a groundbreaking exploration into "affective intermediality," an emerging paradigm that centres on the interplay between media, embodied experiences and material reality. At a time when the scholarly discourse on intermediality is still dominated by researches on literature and mass media, this collection of essays focuses on cinematic intermediality. It delves into the unique position of cinematic images being able to incorporate and to connect to all the other media, as well as being able to generate intense emotions and ethically illuminating experiences. Through investigations into the sensuous inflections of moving images, the volume brings into the spotlight the often overlooked affective potential of intermediality connecting art and life. The chapters investigate a wide array of topics from the representability of feelings and traumatic experiences, from cultural and sensorial entanglements to the gendered gaze and to various affective modalities of getting in touch with the world, including an attunement to non-anthropocentric perspectives. Through in-depth case studies, the book examines how intermedial art practices involving moving images can convey and engender specific sensibilities regarding reality and art. With contributions from both emerging and established scholars, the book highlights films from diverse geo-cultural contexts, also drawing attention to works by and about women. Designed for scholars and students in film and media studies, this book is an essential resource for anyone interested in the affective dimensions of intermediality. It invites readers to engage with critical questions about the emotional and cultural impact of moving images and their intermedial network.

This book presents a rigorous formulation of the general equilibrium model in economies with topological and measurable mathematical structures. It aims to provide basic tools and analytical methods for advanced graduate students and researchers interested in microeconomic theory and game theory. It is based on lecture notes distributed among advanced graduate students in the advanced mathematical economics course at the Ph.D. level. The book presents a unified treatment of the general equilibrium analysis of economies with perfectly competitive markets based on the Walrasian model. It is divided into Part I and Part II. The mathematical analysis of general equilibrium in perfectly competitive economies begins in Part II. As a mathematical preparation for Part II for most economics students, Part I collects some basic mathematical concepts and facts that are later needed and used in the theoretical economic analysis. Some readers may wish to start the book from Part II and refer back to Part I whenever it is necessary to review mathematical concepts and related well-known mathematical results referred to in the text.

The presentation of theoretical economic analysis of general equilibrium theory in Part II is organized chapter by chapter: Basic Concepts of Equilibrium Analysis, Mathematical Structure on the Space of Economic Agents' Characteristics, Individual Demands, Economies with a Measure Space of Consumers, Walrasian Equilibria of Economies, Production Economies, and Edgeworth Equilibria as the Core of Economies. The mathematical analysis in this book uses topological and measurable structures that are essentially built into the model to provide an appropriate means of expressing the characteristics of economic agents that form a basic part of economies along with commodities in market transactions and market prices for valuation in markets.

This book places print media at the centre of studying queer German history. In so doing, it explicitly interrogates the exclusions that certain media forms can engender as well as the possibilities that magazines, novels, poetry, and erotica, among others offered queer and trans* Germans through the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It brings together scholars from the separate yet related fields of German history, German literary studies, and media studies, as well as archival and curatorial practices of public history from Austria, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States to provide a collaborative study of these sources. In so doing, it argues that just as we need to take an inclusive approach to defining what queer print media is and could be, we also need to take seriously the textual forms of these sources in order to understand the wealth of queer experiences in the past.
