This book stands as the first comprehensive English-language scholarly book dedicated to the dynamic and multifaceted aspects of Japanese migrations to Australia.

By offering an extensive and up-to-date analysis of migration trends, this book addresses a significant void in academic research. Structured into two parts, this book offers an in-depth exploration of various aspects of this migration. Firstly, by examining contemporary migration patterns including working holiday makers (WHMs), partnership-based migrants and Japanese-Australian youths, this book unsettles cultural essentialist and national exceptionalist narratives. Additionally, through investigations of Australian tourism, the role of Japanese restaurants in cultural exchange and the artistic expressions within the Nikkei Australian community, this book reveals the diverse contributions and interactions of Japanese communities in Australia and the bilateral influences of Japan. It also critically engages with the monolithic concept of 'community' through specific sectors and previously understudied groups including Japanese-Indigenous Australians and LGBTQ+ migrants, analysing how personal narratives align with or diverge from policy frameworks and offering new perspectives on identity and belonging in transnational contexts.

Combining empirical research with theoretical analysis, this book is not only an academic resource but also a useful reference for policymakers. By offering new perspectives and policy recommendations, it is an invaluable tool for understanding and adapting to the evolving patterns of Japanese migrations to Australia, making a substantial contribution to the fields of Japanese, migration and Australian studies.

How does a resistant- armed group govern and implement an alternative political programme during war?Governance of Resistance in North and East Syria examines the momentous development of the Kurdish-led autonomous administration since 2012. The creation of this unprecedented, ideologically radical entity is of immense significance in Kurdish, Syrian and Middle Eastern history and for discourses of nationalism and identity. Rojava has been transformational for the local population, the course of the Syrian war, and for regional geopolitics. The movement's commitment to an accommodation within Syria and to a new form of inclusive politics makes it an essential component of the post-Assad settlement.

This book presents new research from the expanding scholarship to interrogate Rojava as a political and social idea and explain the resistance narrative that underpins the ideology and governance structures. The contributions examine key aspects of the condition of the autonomous government, its successes, failures and impact, including the theory and nature of the political structures, their application in Arab areas, identity, education, gender and foreign relations. The findings demonstrate that North and East Syria has been revolutionary, that resistance there is resilient, and that there are constant and dynamic tensions between ideology and pragmatism in the evolution of this remarkable political and social project.

In 1815, the Russian vessel Rurik set off on a three-year voyage through the Pacific and Arctic oceans in a quest to find the world's most elusive geographic feature, the Northwest Passage. Financed by a wealthy Russian count and commanded by a fame-seeking captain, the vessel carried four extraordinary observers of the natural world, including an Indigenous navigator from the Caroline Islands named Kadu. The Rurik failed in its mission, yet, as award-winning Pacific historian David Igler masterfully demonstrates, the crew's pursuit of "natural history" throughout the voyage and during its decades-long afterlife embodied a search for knowledge through science, artistic representation, and oral tradition. Failure to achieve a great discovery was common in the great age of scientific voyaging, but explorers, natural philosophers, and traveling artists grew adept at turning their explorations into documented achievements by claiming, publishing, and promoting a range of significant findings. No expedition did this more successfully than the crew of the Rurik. Much of their produced knowledge derived directly from the Indigenous communities they encountered in the Pacific. The men aboard the ship conveyed their discoveries through various mediums. Artist Ludwig Choris documented the experience in the first lithographic compendium of a Pacific expedition. Navigator Kadu informed his Marshall Islander elders and peers of the wonders and dangers he encountered. Naturalists Adelbert von Chamisso and Johann Eschscholtz produced an astonishing range of scientific studies for both scholarly and public audiences. Meanwhile, Captain Otto von Kotzebue defended his failure to locate the Northern Passage by claiming other geographic findings. Featuring rare color images created during the voyage, All Species of Knowledge reveals the intimate and daily practice of shipboard natural history, the role expeditions played in enlightening societies around the world, and the multiple meanings of failure and discovery in the pursuit of knowledge.

This book offers new insights into the debates of vernacularity, language ideologies, and the decolonial turn. It identifies 'vernacular encounters' as nuanced interactions of languages that are often termed as 'local' with culture and power, across varied media and temporalities.

Drawing from rich literary and cultural productions across various geopolitical contexts, the book reveals how vernacular expressions serve as powerful vehicles for political negotiation and cultural transformation. It explores how vernacular encounters actively challenge power structures at various levels by asserting their own cultural authority, thereby creating spaces for alternative perspectives within dominant discourse and challenging hegemonic forces. It also illuminates the role of language as more than just a communication tool, arguing that it also functions as a vital marker of identity and cultural continuity that actively resists homogenization and erasure. This resistance, in the case of the vernacular languages of India, challenges both colonial and global hegemonic forces and sets the tone for affirming diverse cultural narratives.

The volume offers a historically grounded analysis that traces the resilience, adaptation and negotiations of vernacular languages across changing socio-political landscapes. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of language, literature, linguistics, literary and cultural studies, Indian literature, translation studies, and to those with an interest in South Asian history, culture, politics and society.

Ironic plot twists and colorful characters abound in Afshin Matin-Asgari's accessible history of relations between the United States and Iran. The missionaries and educators who descended on Iran in the early nineteenth century made way for the next century's oilmen, CIA agents, scholars, and arms dealers in the assertion of US imperial priorities. Whether Iran resisted or succumbed to US interests, it couldn't fail to be shaped by the superpower.

Matin-Asgari offers fresh takes on familiar topics: America's rise as a Middle East hegemon during the Cold War; the special relationship between Washington and the shah; the Iranian Revolution and hostage crisis; the Iran-Iraq war; the Islamic Republic's peculiar anti-imperialism; the decades of onerous American sanctions; Israel's intervention in Iran-US relations; the ascendance of Trump; and the 2025 attempt by the United States and Israel to bring regime change to Tehran.

A labyrinthine tale of American imperial misadven-tures, Axis of Empire incorporates and challenges scholarly narratives while offering a sophisticated yet highly readable account of Iran-US history.

Israel's pulverization of Gaza since October 7, 2023 is not only a humanitarian crisis, but an environmental catastrophe. Far from the first event of its kind, the devastation Israel has inflicted on Palestine since October 2023 has merely ushered in a new phase in a long history of colonization and extraction that reaches back to the nineteenth century. In this book, Andreas Malm argues that a true understanding of the present crisis requires a longue duree analysis of Palestine's subjugation to fossil empire. Returning to the British empire's first use of steam-power in war, in which it destroyed the Palestinian city of Akka, Malm traces the development of Britain's fossil empire and shows how this enduring commitment to fossil energy continues to drive Western support for the destruction of Palestine today.

Until 2018, women in Saudi Arabia did not have access to football stadiums, and before 2020 there was no official women's teams. On the face of it there were no women in football until top-driven policy reform suddenly turned the situation upside down. But the story of women's football unfolding away from these headlines is a completely different one. This book traces the emergence of women's football in Saudi Arabia from the infancy of grassroots women's team in 2005 to the launch of the first official, state-sponsored, competitions in 2020 - a period Saudi Arabia was going through rapid change. This book is thus both a history of women's football in Saudi Arabia and a study of and social change, and the role of grassroot actors in times of transformation.

The research in this work is based on fieldwork in Riyadh, interviews with players and pioneers of women's football in Saudi Arabia, and analysis of social and traditional media and other available documents. In tracing the developments of women's football in Saudi Arabia, Charlotte Lysa offers a ground-breaking social history of contemporary Saudi society and a narrative of change: change within football, change in women's roles, and change in the structures of society.

For decades, David Harvey has been teaching Marx's work, particularly Capital, to great acclaim. He has analysed chapter by chapter - sometimes line-by-line - Marx's three volumes and the Grundrisse. This new book opens up the mental universe of that work for a general reader.

In The Story of Capital, Harvey takes a synoptic approach to the conceptual architecture as a whole and guides us through the key moments, from labour and technology to the state and geopolitics, via the profit rate, social reproduction, the relationship to nature, fictitious capital and the return of the rentiers. In doing so, Harvey has produced a work which will become a key reference for all those trying to grasp the nature of contemporary capitalism.

Examining the profound impact and significance of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (ICESCO) 'Capitals of Islamic Culture Programme', this book highlights its successes, critically assessing strategies and outcomes amid changing geopolitical conditions, and charting a path forward with actionable recommendations to enrich future aims.

The 'Capitals of Islamic Culture Programme' is an initiative that promotes the Islamic world's dedication to education, science, and cultural growth. Rooted in Islamic ethical principles, it encourages the preservation, regeneration, and invigoration of cultural activity in the capitals, fosters cooperation across the Islamic world, and contributes vital insights into education and society. Set against the urgent need to comprehend how global organizations like ICESCO champion cultural heritage, science, and education, this book offers a substantial addition to the literature on supranational influences in non-Western contexts. From a deep dive into its historical evolution, to an analysis of its contributions to education, science, and culture, readers gain a holistic understanding of the programme. Each chapter applies a specific analytical lens, delivering a razor-sharp critical analysis of its objectives and impact, with discussion that draws on first-hand insights from ICESCO officials, amplifying voices at the heart of the initiative, alongside critical readings within broader geopolitics and global institutions.

Cultivating Islamic Cultural Capitals will be a useful resource for scholars, educators, students, policymakers, and practitioners interested in culture and sustainable development, politics, governance, science, and education across the Arab region, Africa, Asia, and Latin America in particular.

From 1919 to 1922, Greece and Turkey fought a brutal war for Anatolia that reconfigured international politics.

This volume examines the international, transnational and economic dimensions of that conflict and the bitter peace that formally ended it.

Bringing together a diverse group of experts drawing on multiple archives and the latest scholarship, this volume analyses the complexities of peacemaking, the foundation of new nations through the violent 'unmixing' of peoples, the traumas of military mobilisation, and the remarkable revival of global capitalism on the ruins of old empires. Taken together, these essays will remind readers that the Great War did not end in 1919, and that the Greek-Turkish story is a critical element in the wider reshaping of twentieth-century international order.

The first English translation of this revolutionary 1916 text, an unlikely collaboration between Arab intellectuals and British wartime intelligence.

In December 1916, a modest Arabic-language book rolled off the presses in Cairo-one that could challenge everything we thought we knew about British intelligence and Arab nationalism. Thawrat al-Arab, the longest piece of British propaganda from the First World War, has been hiding in plain sight for over a century.

This first English translation reveals an extraordinary collaboration-between Arab intellectuals and British Military Intelligence-which revolutionised wartime information operations. Commissioned by the legendary Arab Bureau and written by Lebanese journalist As'ad Daghir, this early work of Arab nationalism masterfully weaves together history, political analysis and emotional appeals for independence from Ottoman rule. Although its publication advanced British strategic interests, Thawrat al-Arab was far more than simple propaganda: it allowed authentic Arab voices to speak to Arab audiences. Between its dedication to the 'martyrs' hanged by Ottoman authorities and its sweeping vision of Arab greatness, this remarkable text shaped the narrative of the Arab Revolt.

A compelling companion to Gearon's The Arab Bureau, which offers a fresh look at Lawrence of Arabia's intelligence unit in light of Thawrat al-Arab, this new book brings a crucial historical document to English-language readers for the first time.

A Spectator 'Book of the Year'

'The Gaza I knew, and whose length and breadth I've travelled, has ceased to exist.'

Jean-Pierre Filiu, acclaimed historian of Gaza, is intimately familiar with the land's people and places; he speaks the local dialect. But nothing prepared him for what he encountered there in December 2024. This is his unforgettable, unbearably intimate account of one month in a place shattered by Israel's all-out war.

When the historian returned to Gaza, he arrived under circumstances unimaginably different from his many past visits since 1980: only a limited number of convoys were allowed into the Strip, and he was one of the few humanitarians able to enter, this time by night. He remained inside for thirty-three days, and emerged determined to bear witness to the devastation-to the Gazans fighting simply to live, every single day.

Filiu's haunting portrait of a land betrayed is a grim work of war reportage, documented with the acuity of a historian; and a lyrical narrative of human suffering, and human dignity.

Consent to the obliteration of Gaza has created an enormous gulf in the global moral order. History will record how Western governments and large sections of their elites have supported the war waged by Israel against Palestinians after Hamas's attack on 7 October 2023 and silenced voices calling for a ceasefire, a just peace and a respect of international law. Not only buildings have been devastated and civilians massacred, but also language and thought have been damaged. Providing an archive of the first six months of the war nourished by multiple sources, the book examines how the past of occupation and oppression of Palestine has been negated, how a vocabulary and a grammar of facts have been imposed, how accusations of antisemitism have produced censorship and self-censorship, how mainstream media have been restrained and biased. It addresses the acceptance of the unequal worth of lives and the differential treatment of deaths. It questions the invocation of the existential threat for Israel and the debt contracted because of the Holocaust. It analyses how the geopolitical and economic stakes in the Middle East and the growing rejection of Muslims and Arabs have contributed to the abdication of values and principles claimed as foundational.

The agents of coercion in Egypt - its military, police, and intelligence services - have been locked in a perennial struggle for power since their inception. Each institution has vied for dominance, shaping and reshaping the country's political landscape. Yet, the seismic upheaval of the 2011 revolution forced these factions to put aside their differences and forge an alliance in the face of an existential threat: the revolutionary aspirations of the Egyptian people.

Hossam el-Hamalawy - a journalist and leading activist with personal experience at the sharp end of Egyptian repression - delves deep into the inner workings of the security apparatus. Counterrevolution in Egypt is a rare and comprehensive examination of the structures, hierarchies, and methods of the military, police, and intelligence agencies. Drawing on meticulous research, it reveals the strategies deployed to suppress the revolutionary wave, from propaganda and surveillance to mass arrests, torture, and extrajudicial killings. El-Hamalawy traces the power dynamics within these institutions to show how their uneasy unity was both a response to the revolution and a determinant of its eventual fate.

In the last 20 years, feminist scholars have radicalised the historiography of the Arab world. Using gendered theorisations, they have rejected the mainstream histories that prioritise 'official' narratives, and they have highlighted the exclusionary effect of patriarchal systems and discourses. This handbook continues their work by using 'gender' as a mode of analysis to produce a new cultural history of the Arab world. In doing so, it presents a new generation with ways to study the region using a 'gender lens' and establishes this approach as a field.

The five thematic parts correspond to specific areas focused on by new cultural historians: histories of practices; histories of representations; narrative sites of memory; histories of material culture; and histories of the body. Each section then provides new knowledge of the Arab world by moving away from the Western colonial gaze and focusing instead on women's everyday experiences and lifeways. Subjects covered include: theoretical perspectives, Islamic law, protest movements and popular culture, as well as women's autobiographies, gendered memory, food, public health and sexualities.

Edited by two pioneering feminist scholars, Hoda Elsadda and Seteney Shami, it draws together the most innovative work of other feminist scholars from across history, anthropology, literature, sociology, psychology, theology, economics, political science, law, and translation studies. The chapters demonstrate that in using gender as a category of analysis, the cultural histories of the Arab world can be rewritten to prioritise lived realities and female voices and perspectives.

In 1960, as the Algerian War for Independence entered its sixth year, 22-year-old Djamila Boupacha was arrested for allegedly planting a bomb in a university cafeteria. While in custody, she was tortured and raped by French soldiers. Her case would have been buried like countless others had it not been for the efforts of her lawyer, Gisele Halimi, and the philosopher Simone de Beauvoir to transform it into an international cause celebre. Djamila Boupacha is the culmination of this campaign to expose the systemic violence of colonial rule. "To protest in the name of morality against 'excesses' or 'abuses,'" Beauvoir writes, "is an error which hints at active complicity. There are no 'abuses' or 'excesses' here, simply an all-pervasive system."

More than a historical document, the book is a profound exploration of morality, complicity and resistance. A classic text of anticolonialism, this is a story that demands to be read-and remembered.

Imad Yusuf Nuwayhid was born in 1944 in the Lebanese village of Ras al-Matn. He came of age in the 1960s, splitting time between Beirut and Europe. And he died in 1975, the start of the Lebanese Civil War.

But who was Imad Nuwayhid? Was he a leftist intellectual? A self-interested hotel worker? A fighter dedicated to Palestinian liberation? A tragic symbol of what happened to those caught in the crosshairs during the war? Through archival and oral history, Beirut Radical finds that Imad was none of these things alone, but all of them together.

Beirut Radical takes up Imad Nuwayhid as a global microhistory-a window into the global sixties, the war, and its aftermath. Baun argues that Imad's beliefs and actions, crystalized during two tumultuous decades of the Cold War, signal a young generation of what he terms "practical radicals." While much more is known about their politics and support for left-wing ideologies, Imad's life highlights how they pursued them, equally, alongside their career aspirations. Imad's death in the war, then, shows the twisting path by which some young leftists ceded their autonomy to liberation struggles. Lastly, Beirut Radical follows Imad's afterlife, examining how multiple actors to Lebanon's war, some in concert (party and family members), some in resistance (some family), claim individuals and their memory, during and beyond wartime. More than anything perhaps, Beirut Radical is a meditation on the intimate, the personal, the ethics, and the micro-level of history.

Song and music have always played an important part in the cultural identity of the mariners and coastal peoples of the Red Sea. While previous studies on the maritime culture of this region have focused on the sailing vessel, the dhow, and seafaring communities, this is the first book to examine its rich musical repertoire.
Using fieldwork conducted along the Hijaz and Upper Tihama coasts, The Songs of the Arabian Red Sea documents examples of different musical forms and styles as well as the stories of older mariners who describe the contexts in which songs were sung, from sea shanties during the working day to soulful ballads about home and loved ones at night. Presenting the songs and their lyrics in the context of the geography, culture, oral history and musicology of the region, the book reveals the complex and connected network that influenced their development and the vital place of song and music for diverse communities of the region.

The Middle East region is one of the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This book assesses the extent to which there is political and economic space for Middle Eastern states to transition into a sustainable, just and climate resilient future.

The book offers a regional political economy perspective, comparing the hydrocarbon-rich Gulf States with those Arab states in the Mashreq (Levant) and Maghreb (North Africa) lacking matching resources to undertake investments in low-carbon growth and societal-wide climate change adaptation. While recent scholarship has focused on the impact of the energy sector on climate policy, this book covers other key issues including climate finance, food security, water security, Arab 'climate urbanism', and more immediate threats to human security such as conflict and political instability. It concludes that uneven economic development and major variations in governing capacity are more important determinants of climate mitigation and adaptation policy than exposure to the biophysical impacts of climate change. Through a comprehensive analysis of the Middle East, authors in the volume explore the challenges and opportunities to advance alternative development pathways in a post-oil era. The wide-ranging and perceptive chapters are written by leading scholars, featuring mostly researchers from the region.

'Albanese is perhaps the one figure of our times that future historians will recall as the one who did the most to redeem our generation from its guilt over the genocide of the Palestinian people. Her reflections in this book are not just timely - they are for the ages' - Yanis Varoufakis

Israel's genocide in Palestine and the complicity of powerful Western states is undermining international human rights and the UN system. The United States has imposed sanctions on lawyers, UN experts, and Palestinian officials in an attempt to bully and intimidate them into silence. One prominent example is UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese, who has played an important role in documenting Israel's atrocities and those who profit from its oppression of Palestinians.

This book compiles Albanese's indispensable and damning reports on Israel's conduct in Palestine since October 2023. First outlining the case that this period should be understood as a genocide, Albanese goes on to explain how the ongoing violence fits into a longer history of Israel's settler colonialism, and finally presents a devastating indictment against the international corporations that treat mass killing and destruction as a business opportunity.

The volume also features a reflection by Albanese on the current state of affairs; revelations by her predecessors Richard Falk, John Dugard, and Michael Lynk of their experiences as UN special rapporteurs; and a preface by Lex Takkenberg, a 30-year veteran of UNRWA, co-authored with scholar Mandy Turner.

The ebook is free to download from www.plutobooks.com indefinitely, with a request for a donation to the Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA.

All royalties from sales of the book will be donated to UNRWA.

From the Victorian era to Partition, Mukherjee uncovers the unique experiences of the very youngest South Asian migrants to Britain.

Between 1857 and 1947, over 28 million Indians left the subcontinent to live, work and study elsewhere. Today, India has the largest diaspora in the world, with approximately 18 million Indians living overseas. Though often absent from historical narratives, migrant children were instrumental during the time of the British Empire in the development not only of Indian national and diasporic identities, but of British identity too. These children were marginalised by their political status, their race and their age; yet they were fundamental to historical change, from the 1830s through to independence in 1947.

Imperial Footprints vividly charts this history of emigration from British India to the imperial heartland, through the eyes of its youngest participants. From pupils sent to English boarding schools and runaway servants, to sailor children and refugees of war or Partition, Sumita Mukherjee reveals that these child migrants were crucial players in founding Indian communities abroad. Drawing on archival records and firsthand accounts, she offers a portrait of migration to Britain that pre-dated the larger waves of arrivals post-war.

Imperial Footprints challenges the assumptions of the historical voices we often foreground; reflects on post-colonial legacies; and offers a fascinating new perspective on migration and empire.

Can we move beyond the religious-secular divide and live together ethically in a shared political world?
Adorno and the Question of Theology: Religion and Reason Beyond Foundations says yes-and shows how. Through close readings of Dialectic of Enlightenment, Negative Dialectics, and Aesthetic Theory, Rachel R. Rosner examines how Adorno reconfigures the relationship between reason and theology to confront modern fragmentation. Drawing on Adorno's usage of constellation-a way of thinking that connects ideas without locking them into fixed systems-Rosner offers a way to move beyond entrenched dichotomies. In doing so, the book intervenes in contemporary debates on postsecular theory, critical reason, and political theology by rethinking how normativity and critique operate without foundations. Accessible to newcomers and illuminating for specialists, this book serves as both an introduction to Adorno's comprehensive philosophy and a path beyond enduring paradoxes in his reception.

A mythic consciousness is on the rise.

The figure of Homo Mythos can be deciphered today as surplus populations emerge as powerful agents, acting in open territory, free from the determinations of capitalism, liberalism, democracy and right-wing populisms. They spawn a notion of the mythic which foregrounds social contradictions and engenders visions of a communist future.

Saroj Giri traces the contours of such a paradoxical figure in Bhima Koregaon in India, the celebration of the mythical powers of an army of Untouchables fighting Brahmin rulers in the Battle of Koregaon in 1818. This commemoration led to the widespread arrest and detention of activists by the Modi regime in 2018.

Mytho-poetic tales and memories of a brave and independent pre-Buddhist totemic People-of-the-Snake, called Nagvanshis, intertwine with communistic battles of indigenous adivasis against big capital and the modern state. Here is a class struggle which, as Walter Benjamin once imagined, is nourished by the image of enslaved ancestors rather than that of liberated grandchildren.

Homo Mythos anticipates and animates class struggle in the Information Age.

Following the lives of four artists, a beautifully illustrated account of Britain's artistic interactions with India at the dawn of the Raj.

As the armies of the East India Company were busy transforming Britain into a territorial and ruling power, laying the foundations for the imperial Raj, an artistic 'Scramble for India' was taking place.

Art, Ambition and Empire tells the story of the remarkable but little-known artistic encounter between Britain and India in the closing decades of the eighteenth century. Between 1769 and the early 1800s, more than sixty British-based artists made the long voyage east. Among them were some of the finest painters of the Golden Age of British art: the portrait painters Tilly Kettle and Johan Zoffany, the landscape artist William Hodges, and the miniaturist Ozias Humphry. Between them, this quartet would produce an extraordinary record of Indian life and landscapes, of Company merchants and military men, and of the courtly world of princely India. The rewards were spectacular, but, as they soon discovered, there was also a personal and a professional price to be paid.

Why did these four artists go to India? How did they respond to the place and represent it in their work? And what role did they play in shaping perceptions of the subcontinent, during one of the most controversial periods of British imperial expansion?

A vital investigation into the mysterious events behind the surreptitious, illegal creation of a British colony in 1965-just as the United Kingdom decolonised elsewhere.

While Britain's empire decolonised after the Second World War, one more colony was created, in secret and against international law: the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). This founding, in 1965, dismembered sixty Indian Ocean islands within the then British colonies of Mauritius and Seychelles. The entire population of these islands was forcibly displaced to make way for Anglo-American military facilities.

Ostensibly, the new territory was first created to house a communications station on Diego Garcia. But BIOT's utility went far beyond this specific purpose: it facilitated the transfer of strategic power from the UK to the US in the new Cold War world. Samuel Bashfield's eye-opening account illuminates how British and American defence strategies each shaped BIOT's militarisation, with the territory used both by London--to slow its withdrawal 'East of Suez'--and by Washington, to entrench its own power in the Indian Ocean and the Middle East.

Diego Garcia did not become one of the West's critical overseas bases by chance. It was painstakingly honed as a linchpin of Western predominance. Drawing on declassified archives, Bashfield reveals how BIOT was selected, militarised, transacted and defended, from its illegal creation through to the end of the Cold War.
