Sports can boost mood, reduce stress, and build confidence, but pressure to win and injuries can also lead to anxiety, eating disorders, and depression among athletes.

Part of Bloomsbury's Health and Medical Issues Today series, Mental Health of Athletes is divided into three sections. Part I explores different aspects of the complex relationship between athletics and mental health. This includes both the positive and negative mental health impacts sports can have on athletes, as well as how different biological and social factors can influence an athlete's health. This section also examines the role that age has on mental health, from youth sports to senior athletes, as well as the unique mental health challenges faced by disenfranchised groups such as disabled and LGBTQ+ athletes. Part II features coverage of several high-interest issues in this field, including the risk of suicide among athletes and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on athlete mental health. Part III provides a variety of useful materials, including illuminating case studies, a glossary, and a directory of resources.

Inviting us to an active role in reshaping technology is at the core of Digital Wisdom: Searching for Agency in the Age of AI. The book helps you understand more about the underlying issues of AI, social media, and data analytics, so we all can pick a better path together. This book explores how fundamental aspects of today's digital technology intersect with our rights and assumptions about private life, individual autonomy, and social boundaries.

This exploration begins with a discussion about what all that data collected about us is for, and how companies, governments, and ourselves (as people who also work for those companies and governments) might want to alter the dynamic. The book looks at our changing sense of privacy, and how data is not just recorded but fused, correlated, shared, and acted upon in ways that seem fundamentally different than our laws or principles once assumed. It talks about technology's role in making us seem to be more divided than ever, affecting our politics, our pastimes, and even our basic ability to connect with one another. Examining ways in which technology is used to change our minds-sometimes for our benefit, and sometimes to our detriment-the book breaks down the increasing use of algorithms that impact our everyday lives, so we can build a more ethical practice of digital technology.

This exploration about our digital future invites us to, instead, build a practice of Digital Wisdom. It makes an argument for how we can use this wisdom to live more fully in the ways we want, with the features of technological advancement we choose. It suggests how our educational systems, industries, and governments could shift to better support Digital Wisdom. These ideas are not exhaustive; Digital Wisdom is a mindset rather than a simple set of steps to follow. Applying this mindset is going to take creativity from all of us, but, in the end, the Digital Wisdom mindset will guide us in taking concrete steps towards a more responsible digital future.

AI and algorithms are more than technologies. They are rooted in new capitalist forms and processes that transcend economics and technology to reshape social reality, politics, culture, and subjectivities.

Set out in twenty theses-stretching across geopolitics, the mining of rare earths, labor, crypto, influencers, climate change, Gen AI, social acceleration, Silicon Valley ideologies, and predictive policing-this book situates contemporary social change in the context of the advent of algorithmic capital. Jonathan Martineau and Jonathan Durand Folco show how the valorization of data and the development of AI are symptoms of deeper socio-economic and political mutations.

Algorithmic capital is, at once, a logic of accumulation, a form of social power, a mediation of social relations, and a relation to nature, as well as a multidimensional reality that profoundly reorganizes social life. In the face of this new and alarming stage of capitalism, the book explores possibilities for organizing and resistance, tracing a path toward a post-capitalist and just world.

How do we fall in love in the 21st century? In Dating Apps, Modern Romance, and Social Inequality, Hannah Regan explores the impact dating apps have had on how we meet potential partners and decide who to date. In particular, Regan considers our tendency to fall in love with people who are very similar to us, and how dating apps both facilitate this preference and challenge us to think outside the box. By sharing the stories of dating app users, the book raises important questions about how social inequality exists in our intimate lives, and how technology reinforces these long-held social beliefs. This book situates current patterns of dating and relationships within the historical context of courtship, to explore how the introduction of new technology has changed romantic partnerships. Despite these new possibilities, the analysis encourages us to question whether dating is, in fact, changing, or whether we are simply enacting the same old social patterns in new ways. Challenging the assumptions which shape dating preferences in turn challenges the social structures of power and inequality which underlie them.

Why has our preoccupation with concepts, standards, and theories of the beautiful not resulted in a correspondingly comprehensive theoretical treatment of the ugly? Theories of Ugliness remedies this by gathering and scrutinising ideas of the ugly and unsightly from across the history of Western aesthetic and philosophical writing.

Taking in ancient, medieval and early modern concepts, all the way through to more recent Anglo-American conceptions, this book reveals the extraordinary preoccupation with ugliness exhibited by some of Germany's leading philosophers. Fascinating insights into ugliness from dialectical, categorical or purely aesthetic perspectives are found in thinkers such as Hegel, Lessing, Schlegel, Nietzsche, Adorno, Julia Kristeva and most notably Karl Rosenkranz. Whether as a counterpoint to beauty, a target of negation, a literary device, or a victim of humour, ugliness runs throughout the history of Western thought. This compelling study brings that thought together to offer a fresh view that will change the way that scholars think about the ugly.

Fitness, exercise and physical culture is a key part of our modern lives, but has this always been the case? In this book, Conor Heffernan shows how the 19th century was critical for the development of the modern fitness industry, and how the globalization of physical culture was entangled in, and spread by, concepts of nationalism, gender, race, empire and medicine.

From yoga and gymnastics to Indian club swinging and Jiujitsu, When Fitness Went Global follows some of the most popular fitness practices from around the world as they were exported on a global scale during the long 19th century. Showing how this came about through imperial networks, military education, new print culture, faster trade networks and changing ideas about the body, it shows how beautiful bodies were linked to notions of national strength and imperial might. Exploring how both local and international understandings of exercise were negotiated, it asks why some practices became global while others did not, and shows how fitness was revolutionised during the 19th century.

This book examines current research on key issues widely debated in contemporary family sociology. Contributors present emerging perspectives on the dynamics and challenges related to changing family forms and increasing family diversity in various countries or regions. The analyses reveal the multidimensional nature of living arrangements, parenting, and policies in a context of long-term social changes.

Chapters provide empirical and theoretical insights into issues faced by families today, including custody arrangements for post-separation parenting, the pathways to parenthood for LGBTQ+ families, and the struggles of transnational and migrating families. In addition, the book evaluates global declining marriage rates, as well as child and elder care policies in ageing populations. The contributors advocate for research and policy developments to better reflect the move away from traditional societal frameworks, and emphasize the importance of contextual factors, such as identity, culture and policy regimes in shaping the lived experience of doing family.

The Sociology of Families is an essential resource for scholars and students in the social sciences, particularly those interested in families and the sociology of gender. Professionals and policymakers specialising in social care, social work and family policy will also benefit from the book's valuable insights.

What is the nature and meaning of the 'aesthetic'? This question animates Jane Forsey's provocative dive into the foundations of philosophical aesthetics. The result is a compelling new theory of aesthetic experience that draws upon attention, judgement and value as central to our responses to the world we encounter.

We liberally apply 'aesthetic' to a wealth of experiences from horror movies, fashion and perfume to food, fine art and gardening. But underlying our use is a long-standing commitment to the centrality of pleasure. Forsey reveals why traditional aesthetic theories find it difficult to include experiences of the negative-the ugly, the fearsome, the grotesque, the banal- and exposes their inability to adequately reflect the multiplicity of ways we can experience the world.

Through an entertaining analysis of major themes and the latest debates around realism, value empiricism, and the everyday, Forsey argues that a connection to positive valuation severely restricts the kinds of things that can be counted as justifiably aesthetic. She introduces us to the notion of 'discordant aesthetics' and encourages us to incorporate experiences of ugliness, disorder and incoherence as legitimate forms of aesthetic engagement.

This is a call for the discipline to broaden its range and uncouple the aesthetic from its positive connotations. Forsey's fresh perspective on the fundamental question of 'what is the aesthetic?' shows us a more consistent, coherent way of articulating the experiences in our lives.

Love and Romance in China examines love, affection, and emotions in China from Maoist to contemporary China, focusing on the intersections with politics, economics, gender, class, race and technology.

From the founding of the People's Republic of China to the end of the Cultural Revolution, political ideology and class struggle dominated everyday life, and love was subordinated to the communist revolution and socialism. During the Cultural Revolution, this turbulent period witnessed the paradoxical existence of self-abstinence and self-indulgence. Since China changed its political ideology in 1979 and shifted to a market-oriented economy, the country embraced the idea of romantic love. This "emotional turn" fostered opportunities for diverse intimate relationships characterized by the growth of cross-cultural love, LGBTQI+ love, and the emergence of a "sexual revolution" (Zhang 2011; Jeffreys and Yu 2015). The new dynamic was linked to contested discourses of (fantasised, eroticized, and racialized) foreign love intertwined with nationalist sentiments and ongoing tensions between sexual minorities and the government. The new millennium has witnessed love crises characterised by growing concerns about "leftover" men and women, high divorce rates, declining marriage and birth rates, and other relationship problems. The deepening of the market economy and technological advances have turned love into a "fast food" commodity for mass consumption, manifested in dating shows, digital platforms and intimacy between humans and AI/dolls.

Wang draws on a wide range of texts, including government statistics on marriages and divorces, legal documents, Maoist folk songs, poems, posters, love letters, media texts, popular discourses, online dating websites, and ethnographic observations and interviews.

This Element presents an alternative approach to critical heritage studies by attending to forgotten or transformed cultural, historical ideas of heritage. It focuses on the Chinese term guji (?? ancient traces or vestiges), perceived today as the same as the modern concept of cultural heritage. After a macroanalysis of how guji is understood differently in contemporary and historical China, it comes to cultural-historical discourse analysis of guji recorded in the local gazetteers of Quzhou from the 1500s to the 1920s, revealing its way of categorization as boundary negotiation, and cultural modes of meaning-making and remembering, either with or without physical remains or a verifiable site. After a holistic view of this Chinese discourse as reflected in a particular guji, it concludes with a philosophical lens to highlight the alternative existence of heritage in the word guji and the uses of heritage as the uses of language.

From the Victorian era to Partition, Mukherjee uncovers the unique experiences of the very youngest South Asian migrants to Britain.

Between 1857 and 1947, over 28 million Indians left the subcontinent to live, work and study elsewhere. Today, India has the largest diaspora in the world, with approximately 18 million Indians living overseas. Though often absent from historical narratives, migrant children were instrumental during the time of the British Empire in the development not only of Indian national and diasporic identities, but of British identity too. These children were marginalised by their political status, their race and their age; yet they were fundamental to historical change, from the 1830s through to independence in 1947.

Imperial Footprints vividly charts this history of emigration from British India to the imperial heartland, through the eyes of its youngest participants. From pupils sent to English boarding schools and runaway servants, to sailor children and refugees of war or Partition, Sumita Mukherjee reveals that these child migrants were crucial players in founding Indian communities abroad. Drawing on archival records and firsthand accounts, she offers a portrait of migration to Britain that pre-dated the larger waves of arrivals post-war.

Imperial Footprints challenges the assumptions of the historical voices we often foreground; reflects on post-colonial legacies; and offers a fascinating new perspective on migration and empire.

This Companion provides a comprehensive guide to Juergen Habermas's prodigious body of work, bringing together contributions from leading specialists. It explores his main areas of study in chronological order, including topics such as the public sphere and the history of philosophy, to which he has returned in his recent books.

Addressing both the continuities and shifts of Habermas's writings over the past 70 years, multidisciplinary contributions analyse his most recent opus on post-metaphysical philosophy and religion. They present essential theoretical and conceptual frameworks for understanding modern-day crises and, using Habermas's theory, consider the potential for societal emancipation. Chapters discuss sociology and philosophy, the theory of law and democracy, religion and the challenges of practical reason, as well as Habermas's global reception. This Companion stands as an essential tribute and evaluation of one of the most significant thinkers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

The Elgar Companion to Juergen Habermas is a vital resource for academics and students of social and legal theory, philosophy, politics and sociology. It is also an enlightening read for those interested in Habermas's wide-ranging work and his role as a public intellectual from the 1950s to the present day.

Indigenous to Central Asia, Karakul sheep can thrive in the region's arid environment. For centuries, men across Muslim Asia and Russia wore hats made from the sheep's fur, which often symbolised status and masculine power. In the late nineteenth century, the thirst for furs among fashionable women in Europe and America saw millions of Karakul lambskins change hands annually, in Leipzig, London and New York. In the early twentieth century, the Russian Revolution led shepherds and merchants to flee Central Asia for Afghanistan; over the following decades, the trade in Karakul lambskins-initially referred to in the West as 'Persian Lamb' or 'Astrakhan fur'-became a central element of Afghanistan's economy.

In this unique book, Magnus Marsden illuminates Karakul's role in the region's globalisation, drawing on rich archives, three decades of research in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia, and interviews with fur traders and their families. He discovers that Jewish and Muslim Central Asian merchants played a pivotal role in the trade's international expansion, demonstrating remarkable resilience in an environment growing ever more hostile to the long-distance commercial networks which they formed.

Silk Mirage is a compelling portrait of Uzbekistan, a country at the heart of the ancient Silk Road and now the centre of a power struggle between reformers and reactionaries for the soul of this strategic land in Central Asia.

In 2016, the long-ruling dictator Islam Karimov - one of the last Soviet-era strongmen - died, sparking a period of transformation under his successor, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, which became known as the 'Uzbek Spring'. But, as investigative journalist Joanna Lillis shows, spring has struggled to break through in one of the world's most repressive and totalitarian states. As one of the few western journalists with access to Uzbekistan and with over two decades of experience covering the country, Lillis travels deep into the heart of the Karimov regime, portraying all the excesses and atrocities that made it such a brutal dictatorship. She also penetrates the system that replaced it, exploring how life has changed for Uzbeks under Mirziyoyev's rule - and how it has not. A tale of both reform and repression, this book illustrates the challenges of dragging a country out of dictatorship.

Lillis explores Uzbekistan's politics, economics, history, arts and culture - and asks where the country stands nearly a decade after the death of its dictator, and 600 years since its ancient capital Samarkand was the centre of the world's trade network. Lillis weaves in the extraordinary stories of ordinary people: from politicians to former political prisoners, from journalists to human rights crusaders, from entrepreneurs to environmentalists, from artists to architects, from silk makers to carpet weavers.

Conjuring up Uzbekistan as a place full of life and loss, Silk Mirage tells the stories of courageous people who probe to find the cracks in an authoritarian regime through which the light gets in.

The Spectacle of Online Life offers a groundbreaking exploration of the digital age's most pressing paradoxes: connection and isolation, democratization and control, authenticity and performance.

Edited by Danielle Antoinette Hidalgo, Christopher T. Conner, and Matthew N. Hannah, this volume assembles a diverse array of scholars to critically examine how online technologies shape, reflect, and amplify the complexities of modern society.

Chapters in the text draw on insights from the Frankfurt School, Situationist International, and contemporary media studies. This collection delves into topics as varied as promotional livestreaming, climate change conspiracy theories, beauty influencer culture, and the role of artificial intelligence in content moderation. As the authors show, digital platforms are a double-edged sword both empowering grassroots movements and reinforcing systemic inequalities.

This book argues against the perception of Filipino governance in the 1946-1960s as subservient to the interests of the United States. The author contends that Filipinos after independence in 1946, during the Truman administration, and up to the Kennedy administration, pursued Filipino visions, and shaped destinies to pursue their missions and agendas nationally and transnationally that also dovetailed with the American.

Nation-Building and State-Making During the Filipino Third Republic (1946-1960s) examines the making of the nation-state from the unification of interests stemming from an aversion to communism and neutralism in relation to the Cold War. The Philippines became the moderate Asian bridge between the U.S. and Asia, and transnationally in East and Southeast Asia, to the present day. Key to this discussion is an analysis of the presidency of Ramon Magsaysay and the role of non-elite centric nationalism in shaping the political culture.

Weaving a critique of major power intervention into political history, this book provides a comprehensive overview of Cambodia from 1953 to the present.

Since gaining its independence in 1953, Cambodia has been treated as a pawn by more powerful countries. China, Vietnam, the United Nations, and especially the United States have played a role in shaping Cambodia's history, from propping up the Khmer Rouge regime to restricting its economic opportunities.

Michael Haas has been deeply and personally involved in many aspects of the recent history of the country, and his research uncovers details of 20th-century US realpolitik such as Lyndon Johnson's indiscriminate bombing of Cambodia during the Vietnam War, US funding of the Khmer Rouge in the 1980s, and the Unites States' surrender of economic control to China since the 1990s. In an era of increasing great power competition in Southeast Asia, Cambodia is a case study long overdue for reassessment.

Can we move beyond the religious-secular divide and live together ethically in a shared political world?
Adorno and the Question of Theology: Religion and Reason Beyond Foundations says yes-and shows how. Through close readings of Dialectic of Enlightenment, Negative Dialectics, and Aesthetic Theory, Rachel R. Rosner examines how Adorno reconfigures the relationship between reason and theology to confront modern fragmentation. Drawing on Adorno's usage of constellation-a way of thinking that connects ideas without locking them into fixed systems-Rosner offers a way to move beyond entrenched dichotomies. In doing so, the book intervenes in contemporary debates on postsecular theory, critical reason, and political theology by rethinking how normativity and critique operate without foundations. Accessible to newcomers and illuminating for specialists, this book serves as both an introduction to Adorno's comprehensive philosophy and a path beyond enduring paradoxes in his reception.

This groundbreaking book tells the story of China's economic rise from the establishment of the People's Republic to the present. Since the reforms in the late 1970s, China has grown at an extraordinary rate. This transformation did not signify the state's retreat from the economy. Indeed, it was China's communist foundation that enabled this astounding development. Yet at the same time, those reforms saw China give up on the idea of equality, unmaking a working class that the revolution had forged. Teemu Ruskola's engaging and accessible account focuses on the organization of land and labor as the key to understanding China's rise, explaining how their commodification has remade not only the Chinese nation-state but global capitalism itself.

A mythic consciousness is on the rise.

The figure of Homo Mythos can be deciphered today as surplus populations emerge as powerful agents, acting in open territory, free from the determinations of capitalism, liberalism, democracy and right-wing populisms. They spawn a notion of the mythic which foregrounds social contradictions and engenders visions of a communist future.

Saroj Giri traces the contours of such a paradoxical figure in Bhima Koregaon in India, the celebration of the mythical powers of an army of Untouchables fighting Brahmin rulers in the Battle of Koregaon in 1818. This commemoration led to the widespread arrest and detention of activists by the Modi regime in 2018.

Mytho-poetic tales and memories of a brave and independent pre-Buddhist totemic People-of-the-Snake, called Nagvanshis, intertwine with communistic battles of indigenous adivasis against big capital and the modern state. Here is a class struggle which, as Walter Benjamin once imagined, is nourished by the image of enslaved ancestors rather than that of liberated grandchildren.

Homo Mythos anticipates and animates class struggle in the Information Age.

Following the lives of four artists, a beautifully illustrated account of Britain's artistic interactions with India at the dawn of the Raj.

As the armies of the East India Company were busy transforming Britain into a territorial and ruling power, laying the foundations for the imperial Raj, an artistic 'Scramble for India' was taking place.

Art, Ambition and Empire tells the story of the remarkable but little-known artistic encounter between Britain and India in the closing decades of the eighteenth century. Between 1769 and the early 1800s, more than sixty British-based artists made the long voyage east. Among them were some of the finest painters of the Golden Age of British art: the portrait painters Tilly Kettle and Johan Zoffany, the landscape artist William Hodges, and the miniaturist Ozias Humphry. Between them, this quartet would produce an extraordinary record of Indian life and landscapes, of Company merchants and military men, and of the courtly world of princely India. The rewards were spectacular, but, as they soon discovered, there was also a personal and a professional price to be paid.

Why did these four artists go to India? How did they respond to the place and represent it in their work? And what role did they play in shaping perceptions of the subcontinent, during one of the most controversial periods of British imperial expansion?

A vital investigation into the mysterious events behind the surreptitious, illegal creation of a British colony in 1965-just as the United Kingdom decolonised elsewhere.

While Britain's empire decolonised after the Second World War, one more colony was created, in secret and against international law: the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). This founding, in 1965, dismembered sixty Indian Ocean islands within the then British colonies of Mauritius and Seychelles. The entire population of these islands was forcibly displaced to make way for Anglo-American military facilities.

Ostensibly, the new territory was first created to house a communications station on Diego Garcia. But BIOT's utility went far beyond this specific purpose: it facilitated the transfer of strategic power from the UK to the US in the new Cold War world. Samuel Bashfield's eye-opening account illuminates how British and American defence strategies each shaped BIOT's militarisation, with the territory used both by London--to slow its withdrawal 'East of Suez'--and by Washington, to entrench its own power in the Indian Ocean and the Middle East.

Diego Garcia did not become one of the West's critical overseas bases by chance. It was painstakingly honed as a linchpin of Western predominance. Drawing on declassified archives, Bashfield reveals how BIOT was selected, militarised, transacted and defended, from its illegal creation through to the end of the Cold War.

This book offers new insights into the debates of vernacularity, language ideologies, and the decolonial turn. It identifies 'vernacular encounters' as nuanced interactions of languages that are often termed as 'local' with culture and power, across varied media and temporalities.

Drawing from rich literary and cultural productions across various geopolitical contexts, the book reveals how vernacular expressions serve as powerful vehicles for political negotiation and cultural transformation. It explores how vernacular encounters actively challenge power structures at various levels by asserting their own cultural authority, thereby creating spaces for alternative perspectives within dominant discourse and challenging hegemonic forces. It also illuminates the role of language as more than just a communication tool, arguing that it also functions as a vital marker of identity and cultural continuity that actively resists homogenization and erasure. This resistance, in the case of the vernacular languages of India, challenges both colonial and global hegemonic forces and sets the tone for affirming diverse cultural narratives.

The volume offers a historically grounded analysis that traces the resilience, adaptation and negotiations of vernacular languages across changing socio-political landscapes. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of language, literature, linguistics, literary and cultural studies, Indian literature, translation studies, and to those with an interest in South Asian history, culture, politics and society.
