Artificial Intelligence (AI) has permeated our every-day lives. What once was solely a human task, has now been taken over by AI. May it be credit card approvals, customer support, financial transactions, medical imaging or software development, there is AI working behind the scenes.

Outer space, historically always amongst the most developed domains, has not remained untouched for long and space applications have started to increasingly rely on AI. However, this increase in use also leads to a myriad of legal issues, particularly the issue of responsibility and liability under Article VI and Article VII of the Outer Space Treaty and the Liability Convention. Our legal norms, may they be domestic or international in nature, are ultimately built around human behaviour and when applied to AI might not function. Should damage caused by an AI-enabled space object arise, it proves difficult to assess the responsibility of the appropriate State party under Article VI of the Outer Space Treaty, or the liability of the launching State.

While legal literature is primarily concerned with domestic legal issues arising from the use of AI, an in-depth analysis concerning State responsibility and liability for AI-enabled space activities is absent. Space legal literature strongly favours a view advocating for the creation of new "hard law" in form of new binding legal instruments, or the amendment of existing law. Suggestions de lege ferenda are often relied on by authors.

Given the inherent difficulty in creating new law, or amend existing legal instruments, this book proposes to look towards the lex lata and argues that the existing legal norms of State responsibility, State liability and treaty law are sufficient to govern the responsibility of States for their AI-enabled apace activities. The present research looks at these issues from a public international law perspective and proposes a solution within the lex lata.

Rajendra K. Since the turn of the 2020s, Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus have been the stage of major upheavals - from the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War and the dissolution of the self-proclaimed republic, to massive protests in Belarus and Georgia, and Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Yet the agency of the "in-between" countries in the EU's and Russia's shared neighbourhood has been largely overlooked in International Relations, where they are often portrayed as passive victims in the hands of regional powers.

This book challenges that view, showing how these countries - particularly Armenia and Georgia - can be active agents capable of shaping both their own futures and that of the region. Focusing on the period from 2008 to early 2024, it explores how Armenia and Georgia use their liminal subjectivity in-between two competing regional cores as a resource for agency in the framework of their foreign policy. Strikingly, both countries have significantly reshaped their liminality and related agency over the covered period.

Relying on a poststructuralist approach to discourse analysis, this book traces Armenia's and Georgia's evolving identity and foreign policy discourse, revealing how they (re-)articulate their role identity. It highlights how their agency produces both reproductive and subversive effects on hegemonic structures, while creating divisive and connective representations of their regional environment.

Inspired by a postcolonial research agenda, this study amplifies the voices of subaltern actors entangled in hierarchical structures. This book traces the creation, implementation, and evolution of the police institutions within British colonial Natal during 'the formative period' of the colony between 1845 and 1899. It examines how white and Black members of Natal's colonial community formed their own systems of policing, creating structures of control that combined ideas from across multiple continents that illustrated the way imperial rule was not directed exclusively from the imperial metropole, but instead part of a complex mixing of indigenous and colonial ideals in the forging of colonial Natal. This influence had enormous ramifications for the police institutions in South Africa well into the twentieth century. Using numerous case studies involving the organization, actions, and influence of the police in Natal, this work provides examples of Black power and authority, prison escapes, violence by and against the constabulary, and recruitment and logistics within the colonial police. In the end, it places the history of KwaZulu-Natal centrally into the emergence of British imperial rule in South Africa in the nineteenth century.
