In Governing Global Emotions, Jessica Pykett argues that we must shift our thinking on digital emotional governance and calls for a radical reassessment of the fundamental claims of emotion science.

Pykett offers a groundbreaking account of how emotions are defined, used and governed through emerging digital technologies, arguing that emotions, senses and feelings have become a crucial new arena for political, economic and cultural struggles. To comprehend the underlying currents of the intra-Jewish conflict in Israel, which has been labeled differently throughout the years - First and Second Israel, center-periphery relations, Mizrahi-Ashkenazi relations, and in recent years again as First and Second Israel - one must thoroughly understand the nature of relationships between development towns and their neighboring kibbutzim. This book delves into the relations between Sderot and the kibbutzim of the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council, beginning in the 1950s, relationships that experienced various ups and downs over the years. These relations commenced with the establishment of the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council in 1950 and the establishment of the Gevim-Dorot transit camp in 1951, coinciding with the large-scale immigration of Jews from Islamic countries in the early 1950s and the population dispersal policy, particularly to development towns. This research examines the relationships between development towns and kibbutzim across seven decades through the case study of Sderot-Sha'ar HaNegev, and explores the markedly different social and political perspectives of both sides alongside their mutual antagonism. The significance of this research for understanding Israeli reality gained additional relevance following the October 7, 2023 massacre in Sderot and the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council, which are part of the Gaza envelope region.

In the long and protracted process of decolonization in sub-Saharan Africa (1957?1994), three key moments in the transitions from colonial/white-ruled states to independent majority-ruled states can be identified: 1957?1965, 1974?1980, and 1988?1994. These transitional phases of decolonization in sub-Saharan Africa ? the beginnings of the process, a crucial turning-point in that process, and its endings ? are worthy of reappraisal and invite comparisons of various kinds. The existing literature does not consider the roles of communist actors in these transitions from a comparative perspective. The Future in Their Hands is a deep history of the politics of foreign education in Mexico, where many influential figures have degrees from European or US institutions. Reconstructing the history of student mobility from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century, Rachel Grace Newman unveils the social hierarchies, political languages, and institutional mechanisms that created Mexico's foreign-educated elite. Study abroad began as a private phenomenon for young elites to acquire specific forms of knowledge and to preserve their status. But after the 1910 revolution, elites gradually convinced the Mexican state, under the guise of modernizing the nation, to underwrite their ambitions with merit-based scholarships. Student mobility naturalized the expectation that Mexico's sovereignty and development required knowledge from elsewhere. For historians of Mexico and other countries with foreign-educated elites, this book reveals the subtle, insidious processes by which states reinforce privilege through education policy.

In the year 2000, the presidents of Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia agreed to construct the Interoceanic Highway as part of the Initiative for the Integration of the Regional Infrastructure of South America. Instead of bringing the promised economic benefits to the shared triple-frontier Amazonian region, the highway facilitated trade in extracted natural resources as well as a traffic in women. Centering "traffic" as both an analytic and a method, Ruth E. This book provides a general guide to stone-structures of the pre-colonial period called zimbabwes. This is a name which denotes their usage as prestige buildings and that a particular quality of masonry with frequent application of wall decoration patterns was required, which distinguishes them from many other stone structures of coarse workmanship. At least 300 sites are known within the borders of Zimbabwe alone, while a few more are found in Botswana, South Africa and Mozambique. However, recent findings have indicated that stone buildings in southern Angola of similar typology also carry decoration patterns that suggests a much wider distribution in the region than was previously thought.

The word Zimbabwe is of historical origin which has been customized to refer to a specific typology of stone walls and to distinguish them from the rest of low-grade buildings which number several hundred. In the 16^th century, it denoted royal and chiefly settlements built in stone and it was used figuratively to imply the presence there of such important political figures. In this guide, zimbabwe (lower case and in italics) refers to stone walls whereas when in upper case it refers either to Great Zimbabwe or Zimbabwe the modern country.

This work is the first comprehensive volume to act as a guide to the archaeological stone wall structures. Zimbabwe sites are the only immovable cultural remains of substantial physical form that have been inherited from a pre-colonial past. In a post-colonial state, they are extremely valuable as tangible evidence of the historical continuity of indigenous populations with a pre-colonial past. Their history implies an inheritance for present and future generations and entrust ownership to the public. Religious activities connected with the sites imply not just vestigial importance, but embody cosmological values that bind people together. A descriptive inventory such as this guidebook serves two purposes, i.e. a heritage register to support conservation programmes and as a popular study guide to interest both local and international visitors.

This book looks at the process of relocating Indonesia's capital from Jakarta to Nusantara in East Kalimantan. It looks critically at the surrounding conflict and its causes, as well as the solution from the perspective of evidence-based-policy and regulatory impacts assessments whose presence is increasingly needed today, to campaign for participatory policies and achieve the right targets. It is not widely known that the process of relocation of the capital took place behind closed doors and unilaterally. Through a closed legislative process, without public debate, and by amending the constitution later, this takeover process took place without resistance from disadvantaged regions. Following this, when the central government faced financing difficulties along the way, its development budget initially relied on foreign investment, then became dependent on domestic financing, both sourced from state finances (APBN) and local resources. From here, the book maps the subsequent problems that arose, the first of which relates to local resources. It shows how local residents are also affected with land evictions without proper relocation. Through political-economic research and analysis, the book dissects the conflict as it appears in central-regional power relations, by exploring the roots of the problem and recommending several solutions, as well as looking at possible future development of the conflict. This timely book is helpful to those who carry out development studies and are involved in making public policy for campus, government, parliament and the business world.

This book analyses how anti-state or counterpublics have emerged across mediated and physical spaces to respond to the state-led narrative of Pakistani identity. It aims to trace the rise of counterpublic spheres and anti-establishment discourses across different arenas-Twitter, YouTube, and local coffee houses. These spaces, both individually and collectively, offer unprecedented affordances that challenge traditionally immutable subjects such as the use of blasphemy as a political tool, nationalism, and national identity in Muslim contexts. As such, these counterpublic spheres have created opportunities for episodic deliberation on national identity and religion, and on how both shape the individual and collective identity of the Pakistani nation.
