In this cutting-edge book, Andy Nguyen, Kshitij Sharma and Ha Nguyen explain how AI can improve our understanding of how people learn. The authors demonstrate how, by analysing multimodal data from different channels, including eye gazes, physiological data and self-reports, AI can provide a clearer picture of what learners think, feel, and do, going far beyond traditional tests or surveys.

The authors introduce both classical and deep learning methods for collecting and analyzing data, with a particular focus on multimodal learning process analytics. They explore how large language models and generative AI tools can facilitate human-AI collaboration, while addressing ethical and privacy issues such as fairness, transparency and inclusivity. Integrating theoretical, methodological, and practical perspectives, authors demonstrate how using AI responsibly and thoughtfully can create more inclusive, adaptive and evidence-based learning environments.

Artificial Intelligence in Multimodal Learning Process Analytics is a vital reference for scholars and students of learning sciences and pedagogy, particularly those focusing on educational technology, learning analytics and human-computer interaction. It is also highly beneficial for educators and educational policymakers interested in how AI can support learning.

This timely book investigates the emergence of data-for-accountability as a governing tool in education. Five leading scholars explore its evolution over time and across regions, highlighting how datafication in education benefits some and disadvantages others.

The authors trace the origins of using data for accountability in education back to the 1990s, demonstrating how various actors have adapted and tailored this trend, thus diversifying its use as a governance tool. They examine the rise of student testing, performance-based evaluation and governance by numbers to reveal the political, economic and pedagogical uses and abuses of data. Drawing on a variety of methods, theories and disciplines, including a combination of macro-, meso-, and microlevel analyses, the authors illustrate how these instruments have taken root globally, why they persist and how their meanings and effects vary across policy contexts.

Data for Accountability in Education is a crucial resource for scholars, students and practitioners in comparative education and international education policy, as well as those engaged with the sociology of education. Policymakers working with educational data will also find the book a valuable reference point for understanding accountability in education.

Charles W. A. Prior offers a new account of the sovereign claims of Native Americans, the Crown, and colonies in early America, arguing that Native American diplomacy shaped how sovereignty was negotiated and contested among all three, from Virginia's founding to the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. Previous scholars have focused on the contested relationship between the British imperial state and the colonies it established along the Atlantic Coast without addressing how sovereign Native nations shaped the colonial process through warfare, diplomacy, trade, peace-making, and treaty-making.

Prior adopts a new interpretive framework for examining sovereignty in early America, arguing that the Native and colonial spaces of the Northeast were a treaty ground thickly layered with agreements and negotiated rules of interaction. Drawing on an extensive range of treaty records, writings on colonial and imperial affairs, letters, and official documents, Treaty Ground argues that sovereignty was negotiated within diplomacy and shaped the norms of war, the terms of peace and alliances, the rightful ownership of territory, and appropriate responses to treaty violations. This process in turn structured relations between the Crown and colonies and framed initial positions on how the power of congress related to that of the states.

Treaty Ground offers historical depth to our understanding of how Native nations articulated Indigenous power within colonialism, cuts settler colonialism down to size, and expands contemporary understandings of the sovereign relationships between Native nations in the United States and Canada.

Do people have special rights in a place if they are one of the locals there? The belief that they do is common worldwide. Yet, entitlement to place has little role in most accounts of migration politics. Instead, migration politics commentary is a showdown between culture and economics, in-group identities and material incentives. In Strangers and Settlers, Bethany Lacina provides the first global study of nativism that features a unified account of the drivers of backlash against international and domestic migration. Drawing from forty years of global public opinion surveys conducted in 146 countries; detailed census records from 70 countries spanning the mid-1950s to now; and a wealth of comparative information on both migration policy and nativist activism, Lacina describes a world of nested hierarchies of locals, offering new insights about migration politics. As she shows, both domestic and international migration politics take place within a nativist status quo. Being local is normative even within national and ethnic groups and when the material stakes of migration are low. Governments use a range of policies to ensure locals maintain political and economic superiority over newcomers, particularly international migrants. An unprecedentedly comprehensive study, Strangers and Settlers shows that the status quo throughout the world is nativism, but the key to making sense of its variety is understanding whether and how regimes, residents, and newcomers clash over controlling who is local.

The Spiritual Narratives of Generation Z explores how the first smartphone generation narrates faith amid shifting religious practice and influencer culture. Grounded in pioneering research begun at the University of Oxford, it is the first study to use story completion and participatory co-analysis to place Gen Z voices at the center of religious inquiry. At its core is a typology of five narratives, from Divine Disillusionment to Simple Faith, that uncover young people's latent beliefs and spiritual aspirations. Combining the breadth of qualitative analysis with the depth of narrative interpretation, this book offers fresh insights into how today's youngest adults are reshaping the religious imagination, engaging with global religions and philosophies through their smartphones. It will appeal to students and scholars of religion and cultural studies, as well as anyone interested in how young people imagine religious and spiritual role models today.

This book maps the terrain of the part of ethics that reflects on the nature of ethics itself, a field known as metaethics.

It helps upper-level undergraduates and other interested readers understand the main theoretical innovations as reactions to puzzles about moral disagreement, reference, moral epistemology, metaphysics, and moral psychology. The book provides the necessary background to grasp the puzzles and to understand the solutions offered. More complex positions are displayed as developments of simpler ideas and theories. Positions covered include error theory, subjectivism, relativism, noncognitivism, fictionalism, supernaturalism, nonnaturalism, and naturalism. Several charts map the relations between the positions.

Key Updates to the Second Edition:

  • A text that is easier to follow throughout, now with regular references to the main explanatory chart in the Introduction
  • An expanded and more self-contained discussion of supernaturalism, which now can be better used as its own module or omitted completely from a class syllabus
  • Additional understanding and/or extension-oriented questions at the end of almost every chapter
  • Updates to citations and Suggested Readings
  • Reassurances to the student reader that uncertainty about certain difficult topics is both natural and expected

Why do representations of rape tend to look the same? Why do they frequently feature themes of media technology and surveillance? This book traces the role of surveillance technology in film and television depictions of rape in the 2000s. It shows how the stranger rape narrative is popularly used as a sense-making tool for the entanglement of the body, digital technology, and institutions of power. These films and television series interrogate the digital management of self-representation. In a cultural context defined by digitally galvanized feminist movements, a growing awareness of online gender violence, and a global movement aimed at shuttering these discussions, this book is even more pressing if we are to make sense of the relationship between offline and online forms of gender violence and the evolving cultural meaning of the rape narrative.

The term social media influencer can be used in relation to a variety of entertainment, activist, commercial, amateur, professional and alternative faces and/or figures. This book explores influencer culture, the online personas these figures adopt and the interest around them.

Social media influencers include those who bring pre-existing fame to an online platform, those who establish a visible digital presence without earlier public recognition and those again who transfer their social media fame to more traditional entertainment forms and formats. However, what much existing literature in the field and the contributors in this volume demonstrate is the scale and scope of fame and recognition that exist within that term, and the distinct ways in which each one opens up a discussion around authenticity and performativity. With that in mind, this volume considers the ways in which disability and climate activists, maternal and religious content creators, Vtubers and queer male beauty influencers chose to curate a public persona, presented as ordinary and/or authentic for an interested and invested following and fan base.

Accessible and thought-provoking, this book offers valuable insights for anyone interested in the contemporary celebrity, fame cultures and social media visibility. It will be useful for researchers and students of media and culture studies, gender, disability, communication and celebrity studies.

This book was originally published as a special issue of Celebrity Studies.

A striking triptych once displayed in countless African American households, the Trinity typically features Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King Jr., and John F. Kennedy. More than decoration, these portraits were deliberate acts of memory and quiet resistance, a medium through which African Americans asserted their own narratives of hope, leadership, and the fight for justice.

In this provocative history, Sharron Wilkins Conrad traces the Trinity across several decades, showing how African Americans didn't merely remember the civil rights movement; they shaped its meaning. The Trinity reveals why Kennedy's image hung beside King and Christ, while Lyndon B. Johnson, despite signing landmark legislation such as the 1964 Civil Rights Act, remained largely unheralded. Kennedy's charisma, symbolic promise, and perceived martyrdom placed him among sacred icons, while Johnson-seen as transactional and confronted by the era's growing impatience-never secured the same emotional legacy. In a gripping exploration of memory and meaning-making, Wilkins Conrad reveals how communities create historical truths by elevating some leaders, sidelining others, and preserving their own visions in defiance of the official record.

Despite the LGBTQ movement's rapid growth and significant policy successes over the past few decades, many mainstream religions continue to discriminate against queer communities. In response, LGBTQ people have mobilized across a wide range of religious traditions, advocating for church leaders to ordain LGBTQ clergy, accept LGBTQ people as members, officiate same-sex weddings, and affirm the dignity and worth of transgender and nonbinary people. Bringing together leading scholars of social movements, religion, and gender and sexuality in one volume, Jonathan S. Coley and Golshan Golriz have curated a comprehensive look at religiously affiliated social movements within many faiths, charting everything from why and how LGBTQ people engage in activism to the outcomes of their efforts.

Contributors include Joseph Anthony, Orit Avishai, James Cavendish, Stephen Ellingson, Leya Essex, Melinda D. Kane, Nancy Malcom, Dawne Moon, A. J. Ramirez, Shanon Shah, Theresa Tobin, and Michelle Voyles.

Business Management Essentials from Modern and Buddhist Perspectives presents a holistic approach to management by combining contemporary business functions with Buddhist teachings that have sustained the Buddhist community for over 2,500 years. The book uniquely covers 17 business functions through both modern and Buddhist perspectives, featuring 112 citations from the original Pali canon and 30 verses from the Dhammapada. Unlike other works on business and Buddhism, it specifically draws from the Theravada tradition that originated during Buddha's time, avoiding inaccuracies found in other texts while using illustrative stories to demonstrate how poor management decisions can lead to failures.

This distinctive work stands apart from previous books on business and Buddhism by providing in-depth analysis of individual business functions rather than general principles, offering organisations a path to develop management systems based on ethical and moral principles. Each chapter methodically demonstrates how Buddhist practices can enhance business effectiveness, creating mutual benefits for businesses and all stakeholders - including employees, customers, shareholders, suppliers, communities and governments - ultimately promoting organisational systems that contribute positively to humanity while ensuring business survival in today's competitive environment.

The sauces we eat evoke emotions, define our meals, direct our conversations over those meals, and influence the way we think about ourselves and each other. Sauces, through their consumption and rejection, create bonds between peoples and distinguish outsiders. This multidisciplinary volume brings together leading scholars to reconsider sauces and identity beginning in the ancient Roman world and ending in the kitchens of modern homes, restaurants, and culinary schools. From garum, ketchup, and mole to olive oil, maple syrup, and even human sweat, the contributors examine critical parts of meals that are neither filling, sturdy carbohydrates, nor critical proteins, but complicated flavors that enhance the dining experience. They reflect on the cultures that produced and consumed sauces and how each one informs our understanding of those cultures. Featuring a foreword by prominent chef Ana Ros and peppered with recipes, From Garum to Mole offers insights for scholars, chefs and cooks, and anyone who wonders about the meaning of what we eat.

This book explores the influential role played by singing as a performative medium within processes of textual interpretation and variation during the late Second Temple Period, as reflected in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Singing is argued to be a prominent and widespread mode of performance, and a medium which exerted considerable influence within and upon processes of textual composition, interpretation and transmission. These complex processes result in the variation of textual forms, meaning that sung performance contributed to the widespread pluriformity of textual traditions, including those that were eventually codified in the scriptural canons of Judaism and Christianity.

The Shikshapatri (1826) is a scripture presented as a letter to devotees from Swaminarayan (1781-1830), the founder and principal deity of the eponymous Swaminarayan tradition. Designated by millions as a revelatory scripture down to the belief of its divine authorship, the text is treated as a succinct and authoritative index of Swaminarayan beliefs and practices. Early manuscripts of the text are so cherished that some, like the one enclosed in a glass cabinet in the Oxford Bodleian libraries, are treated as relics. For the first time, Avni Chag's thorough text and historical analysis of the Shikshapatri adds nuance to the story of its canonization. Featuring the first English translation of an earlier, shorter version of the text (1823), The Relic in the Glass Cabinet submits the text's authorship, intent, and historical development to critical scrutiny. Based on a comparative study of two Shikshapatri recensions, Chag demonstrates that the text did not originally align with the specific Vaisnava theological identity it now claims. Instead, doctrinal commitments were added after Swaminarayan's passing, fundamentally reshaping how the text, its author, and his tradition have been understood. The Relic in the Glass Cabinet offers novel dimensions to existing scholarly interpretations of early Swaminarayan history, theology, and literature. It tells an untold story of the complex histories of textual production, exploring the interplay between historically contingent circumstances and inherited, albeit negotiated, religious ideas and practices, all at the formative moment of a tradition's inception in early nineteenth-century western India, present day Gujarat.

How migrants imagined a country through their acts of returnWhat does it mean to go back home, especially when "home" is shaped by conquest, labor, and longing? This question has animated the experiences of global migrants displaced by imperialism, capital, and the nation-states that have sought to manage their movements for their own political and economic benefit. Through vivid storytelling, Adrian De Leon traces how Filipinos, both at home and overseas, have both shaped the societies they've settled in and transformed the very idea of the Philippines itself.

By following the emergence of the Filipino return migrant (balikbayan), De Leon explores how statecraft in the Philippines-from the late Spanish period through the post-1946 independent state-attempted to co-opt value from migrant communities. Balikbayan shows how diasporic labor and transpacific political imaginations were central to the development of a modern Philippine nation-state, through enabling the continued conquest of the islands' frontiers, and sustaining the economic recovery of a nation indebted by native elites and overseas empires. In turn, these lands were reframed by the state as the birthright of overseas Filipinos who yearned to connect with their roots.

Compiled through deep and thoughtful research in community archives, the itinerant histories brought to life in Balikbayan coalesce around a new cultural-economic form that has come to define contemporary nationhood: the homeland.

Late in the 11th century, renowned Hanafi scholar Abu Yusr al-Pazdawi wrote a theological treatise that became one of the most celebrated books in Muslim history. This book is the first English translation of that manuscript, Kitab Usul al-Din.
Written in a highly accessible style, Kitab Usul al-Din introduces readers to theology through conversations on some of the most important theological issues in history: Why did God create us? Where do we go when we die? What makes someone a good person? Does God love us? Al-Pazdawi situates central issues in Islamic thought within a series of dialogues and debates, and challenges readers to draw their own conclusions.
Presented here for the first time in English, Theology in Thirty-Six Dialogues (and Sixty Lessons) offers al-Pazdawi's text as a foundational introduction to Islamic theology for English speakers. Islamic studies professor Rumee Ahmed begins each dialogue with brief contextualizing notes that familiarize readers with the topics under discussion. Staying true to al-Pazdawi's call-and-response style, Ahmed's translation is presented as a series of acts and Socratic dialogues that preserve the performative nature of the original and engage the reader in a dynamic way.
Putting forth a reflective and unprecedented translation, this book invites readers of all backgrounds to engage with the most vital issues in Islamic thought.

A quintessential guide for educators and caregivers, this book explores the intersections of sustainability and childhood curriculum.

Educators Elaine Beltran-Sellitti and Margaret MacDonald follow the story and findings of a nine-month long research project that took place in a living, environmentally friendly, "more than green" building housing two university-run childcare centres. The building of interest was designed with many of Reggio Emilia's learning principles in mind. Together, the authors asked the questions: What can children and teachers learn from and with this environmentally conscious Reggio-inspired building? And what is the educator's role in supporting their resultant curiosity and learning? In addition to understanding the special context that was engendered by the living building, the book also addresses the wide-ranging tensions and pressures affecting contemporary teaching practices of curriculum as living inquiry.

This book includes the articulation of a vision for curriculum that is attuned to the elements of sustainability reflected in the architecture of the childcare building, in its furnishings and materials, in the intention to avoid waste, and in the relationships with the forest and garden. It highlights an emergent curriculum project attuning to children's imaginative meaning-making through the structure of the building. Nurtured by varied perspectives including the pedagogy of Reggio Emilia, social constructivism, and new materialism, this book embraces a future for sustainability achieved through the nourishment of meaningful curriculum.

This volume serves as an introduction to the principles and applications of analytical chemistry to archaeological materials. Accessible to students without a comprehensive background in chemistry, it will enable them to draw meaningful interpretations from analytical data in order to facilitate a deeper understanding of the beliefs of people in the distant past. The second edition has been thoroughly revised to include the cutting-edge developments in analytical chemistry that have occurred over the last two decades. It offers a detailed explanation of the principles behind the analytical techniques, allowing archaeologists to appreciate the strengths and limitations of data generated through analysis of archaeological objects. The volume also includes interdisciplinary perspectives, showing how the interaction between a range of disciplines enables a deeper understanding of human behaviour and beliefs in the past. Importantly, the book provides basic information on laboratory procedures and safety that fosters an understanding of the practicalities of laboratory science.

In a world characterized by democratic decline, this book explores the ways in which struggles for feminist, queer and trans rights build imaginaries and shared hopes. Drawing on global and local ethnographic studies, contributors examine protests against the rise of ultra-conservative, right-wing, anti-gender and anti-feminist actors.

Contending with neoliberal regimes and actors pursuing a politics of fear, this book investigates the relationship between hope and hopelessness. It evaluates the conditions that enable or hinder hope, as well as how hope shapes ongoing struggles. The chapters illuminate alternative world imaginaries, advocating for the rebuilding of communities and political action during and after traumatic experiences. Ultimately, contributors promote a radical, militant hope, particularly necessary in today's turbulent times.

Feminist and Queer Imaginaries of Hope in a Turbulent Era is a valuable resource for scholars and students of feminist, queer, postcolonial, development, global and transnational studies. Due to its rich empirical material, the book is also an essential read for activists and policy makers interested in feminist and LGBTI+ issues.

This book argues that Lutheran and Catholic religious leaders in sixteenth-century Germany used passion meditation to shape the faithful into Christian selves capable of navigating religious division and spiritual peril. Vincent Evener reveals how Lutherans transformed medieval motifs and practices of passion meditation, and how Lutheran concerns, motifs, and techniques continually evolved. For instance, first-generation Lutheran reformers trained the faithful to read the present suffering and weakness of their church through the lens of Christ's passion, but the practice eventually became threatening to Lutheran authorities. Evener also illuminates Catholic efforts in late sixteenth-century Bavaria to renew passion meditation and devotion in distinctly Catholic forms that integrated inward and outward self, individual and community. This book is a fascinating study of how spiritualities and selfhoods were shaped by Reformation rivalries, anti-Jewish hostility, attitudes toward gender, devotional practices of imagination, mystical yearning, and more.

Plurilingual and Intercultural Pedagogy for All in Higher Education provides a compelling rationale and practical approach for the integration of diverse voices and languages within the educational offering on postgraduate Englishmedium instruction programmes in higher education.

In making its case for plurilingual and intercultural approaches to English-medium education, the book critically engages with themes such as English-medium instruction pedagogies, interculturality, internationalisation at home, language commodification, language ideologies and student mobility. It catalogues and draws upon existing bi/plurilingual approaches to teaching and learning on English-medium instruction academic modules to propose a pedagogy tailored to such modules in global higher education. Designed to appeal to lecturers responsible for constructing syllabi and teaching and learning activities for English-medium instruction modules, the book presents a constructively aligned pedagogic approach and a sound rationale for integrating multiple student languages into academic modules. This enables educators from all disciplines to incorporate diverse perspectives into their syllabi and teaching.

This book is essential reading for educators across disciplines who wish to embrace linguistic and cultural diversity in their teaching. The internationally adaptable pedagogy presented will also be of interest to researchers, students and policymakers working in higher education.

This book examines the place of women in Soviet Russia from the 1917 Revolution through the post-World War II period, discussing how the Soviet construction of gender perpetuated inequality even as it dramatically expanded women's roles in society.

Chapters of this book explore Bolshevik activists' ideals of women's liberation and their failure to realize these ideals; the significance of women's labor to the Soviet economy, alongside continued workplace discrimination; state reproductive policies and essentialist understandings of femininity; women's World War II military service and representations of gender in postwar commemorations; and the role of socialist ideology in the formation of the Soviet system and Stalinist culture. Throughout, Hoffmann places Soviet history in its international context, including comparisons of Soviet women's social positions with those of their counterparts in other countries. The book makes clear the centrality of the Soviet gender order to the country's social, cultural, and political history, as well as providing an important historical case for understanding the broader struggle for women's equality.

Intended for students and scholars alike, this book is a valuable resource for all those interested in gender history, Soviet history, labor history, and World War II.

The Routledge Handbook of Music and Dance Performances in the Ancient Mediterranean: An Interpretive Approach brings together research from the subdiscipline of archaeomusicology, or music archaeology, with new perspectives from art history, the archaeology of performance, and sensory studies, to provide a comprehensive overview of music and dance in the ancient Mediterranean world. Through an archaeological approach to performance that places musical and dance activities within an actual or symbolic space, the book utilizes the study of instruments and sound objects to provide a valuable investigation that can shed light on the ritual meaning and social function of sonic events, as well as on the role of musicians and dancers in antiquity

Including Egypt, the Near East, Greece, Etruria, and Rome, this handbook emphasizes the evidence from material culture for both ritual and everyday contexts. Providing a useful reference for anyone coming to this field of research for the first time, this volume introduces the varied modes of inquiry that have directed the study of ancient music and dance, and offers new possibilities for future study.

This book reimagines what art institutions might become through the lens of three permaculture design principles-observe and interact, obtain a yield, and use and value diversity.

Structured in three parts, the book moves between theory, case studies, and in-depth conversations with artists, curators, and collectives who are already reshaping institutional practices from within. Part 1, Observe and interact: transecting current multiple crises in art institutions, examines the limitations of European funding frameworks and their effects on institutional behaviour. Part 2, Obtain a yield: networks of relationships, resources, and practices, looks at how institutions might cultivate forms of reciprocity and resilience that extend beyond economic value. Part 3, Use and value diversity: imagi(ni)ng alternative narratives and futures, embraces diversity and multiplicity as conditions for institutional renewal.

Rather than providing conclusions, this book invites readers to imagine and co-create the art institutions of the future-fluid, diverse, and deeply intertwined with the ecosystems in which they exist. It will appeal to scholars and upper-level students of cultural studies, social change, cultural management and policy, gender studies, race and racism, and ecology and environmental studies.
