God and the First Families offers a novel exploration of God's role as a parent in the book of Genesis. Compellingly, author Stephen Spector introduces Americans' four main perceptions of God and their four most common styles of parenting as lenses through which we can reckon with God's own methods of parenting in the first biblical book.

God begins as an authoritarian parent who demands obedience and submission to authority, but shifts in striking ways. Next, God's parenting seems entirely benevolent. Stunningly, God reverts to authoritarianism during the near sacrifice of Isaac-but then invents a new parenting style focused on guiding the characters' moral and emotional growth. Many psychologists consider this the most successful childrearing method. Genesis reached that conclusion two and a half millennia ago!

Throughout, Spector engages with familiar stories-sibling rivalries, family ruptures, traumas-from unexpected angles. He dramatizes how parental love in Genesis builds resilience against trauma, another idea validated by modern psychology. Surviving trauma, healing from parental favoritism, repairing broken relationships, earning forgiveness, possibly even reconciling after injury-Genesis offers wisdom on all.

How do Indian men and women migrant entrepreneurs play a part in repositioning India as a pivotal actor in the twenty-first century's multipolar world order? In Becoming Boundless, Manashi Ray draws on ethnographic and archival research to uncover how they create and participate in transnational networks, and how these networks in turn drive the growth of global capitalism. Ray pays particular attention to the expansive global networks of transnational Indian entrepreneurs between the United States and India and across several other nations.

Covering a 10-year period in India's post-reform era, Ray deftly highlights complex connections between the social and spatial mobility of this diverse, bi-cultural population, and uniquely theorizes the intersection of class, caste, and gender. She questions whether migration reinforces dominant forms of social inequality or transforms it through the redistribution of valued goods and life chances, especially for women in male-dominated sectors. The book therefore recasts contemporary migration as a crucial part of the emergence of transnational economic spaces, and analyzes the ways that these spaces are fragmented and hierarchical.

Addressing challenging questions at the intersection of happiness research and theories of justice, this book explores the extent to which redistribution of material goods can promote the happiness of the recipient and which form of redistribution best serves this purpose: state redistribution in the name of social justice or voluntary redistribution driven by philanthropy.

The book is an enquiry into a prominent theory at the intersection of the economics of happiness and the philosophy of justice: material resources that a person has but cannot use to further increase his or her own happiness should be redistributed not only for reasons of social justice but also for reasons of formal justice, because they increase the happiness of the taker without diminishing the happiness of the giver. In exploring this theory, the book develops a taxonomy of the various theories of social justice and shows the shortcomings behind the thesis of just happiness. However, the book also shows how the thesis of just happiness can be saved, namely by rehabilitating philanthropy. It is argued that philanthropy is the only known form that can increase the happiness of the taker without diminishing that of the giver. This book will appeal to readers and scholars of philosophy, politics, and economics.

Most contemporary economists understand markets as purely price-making systems, ignoring the role of markets as relational systems that frame our way of life and determine the kind of society we live in.

This book weaves both of these elements together to present a history of markets which accepts the interplay between price system and relational system and between mechanism and purpose. The book recounts the evolution of the narratives adopted by political economists to describe the workings of the market and how the market may serve to create and maintain relationships that foster cooperation and trust and improve welfare. Such a story of the market follows the debate among political economists, revealing a sense of mission to press the potential of markets into service to solve poverty and promote human welfare. Naturally, their ideas, dreams and ambitions changed with changing circumstances and understanding. Thomas Aquinas, Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill all had something different in mind when writing about the market. The book therefore presents different episodes in the history of political economists' market, extending from the heyday of control (by religious, communal and feudal authorities in the Middle Ages) to the heyday of liberty during the mid-nineteenth century (laissez-faire). This history of political economists advancing their ideas about the place of markets in human life offers a much-needed complement to the more common one-sided representation of markets.

This book will be essential reading for historians of economic thought and political economy who are interested in the evolution of ideas on the role of markets.

Capitalism is an economic system where almost all production and trade activities are organised by enterprises whose purpose is to maximise the return on the capital that has been invested in them. Economists, however, have almost universally defined capital in a way that makes it impossible for them to analyse important practical and societal aspects of the economic calculations of capital-based enterprises in capitalism.

In contrast, this book develops a theory of capital that is, at the same time, a theory of capitalism. Based on the definition of capital provided by the Historical and Institutional Schools, and later developed by Carl Menger and Ludwig von Mises, the theory of capital in this book takes account of the term "capital" as understood and used in actual business life. A theory of capital that is successful in explaining the rationale of economic calculations of profit-oriented enterprises in the market economy will necessarily also explain how the societal production process is organised in capitalism. Starting from the positive analysis of capital and capitalism, the book discusses the fair value and shareholder value revolutions of recent decades. These approaches, sometimes summarised under the label of "value-orientation," have introduced theoretical neoclassical equilibrium concepts into the practice of enterprises in capitalism. The book argues that this has led to paradoxical and unsustainable results. It does not make sense to reform the institutions of economic calculation on the basis of a theory that does not, in any significant way, deal with these institutions.

The book will be of great interest to readers in the areas of Austrian economics, institutional economics, history of economic thought, varieties of capitalism, and financial accounting.

Both general linguists and Slavic specialists will find the Slavic verb to be a rich source of linguistic data. This book offers insights that contribute to a deeper understanding of both the Slavic languages and language structure more broadly.
The first volume of this two-part work presents studies on the Slavic verb from a comparative perspective, focusing on analyses involving two or more Slavic languages. It includes contributions on verbal aspect (including biaspectuality, the East Slavic perfective, and the perfective present), semelfactive verbs, the pluperfect, phasal verbs, dative reflexive constructions, and anankastic modals. The empirical data span a broad range of Slavic languages-including Croatian, Russian, Serbian, Slovene dialects in Friuli, and Stokavian dialects in Albania-as well as studies adopting a cross-Slavic approach.

This work presents a linguistic atlas of Zazaki, a northwestern Iranian language. It documents the linguistic geography of a region that has so far been little studied. The research is based on original fieldwork conducted with a questionnaire in 65 locations across the entire area. This questionnaire is oriented towards the predominantly rural conditions of a culture that is on the verge of disappearing. Zazaki is comprehensively documented following the model of linguistic atlases of European languages and is presented in 280 maps, which summarize 850 individual maps. The work is divided into two parts: a theoretical section with an introduction and map commentaries, and a map section. This is the first systematic foundational research on the linguistic geography of Zazaki. The study sets new standards in Iranian studies. This volume focuses on phonetic and phonology of Zazaki. Six additional volumes will follow.

The number of people in the world with a bank account or money service provider increased by 2 billion over the past decade. This phenomenon reflects what Tyler Girard calls the global financial inclusion agenda. This agenda emerged in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis and quickly became a prominent feature of global economic governance. The core idea of financial inclusion is that all individuals and businesses should have access to and use formal financial services, including bank accounts, payment services, credit, and insurance. Today, the widespread ability to digitally store and transfer money has impacted every aspect of our lives. What explains the emergence and evolution of the global financial inclusion agenda? And what does the politics of the agenda tell us about the impacts of new technologies on global politics and how ideas become global agendas? Drawing on an original collection of primary documents and interviews with elites from Ghana, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Switzerland, this book traces the global financial inclusion agenda over time and interrogates its adaptation in specific contexts and issue areas. Through the concept of participatory ambiguity, Girard offers a novel explanation of the agenda that advances important debates in international relations and international political economy on the distribution of power and authority in global governance.

Although the unattested language of Proto-Indo-European has been studied for over 200 years, the greater part of this literature has focused on its phonology and morphology, with comparatively little known of its syntax. This book aims to redress the balance by reconstructing the syntax of relative clauses. It examines evidence from a wide range of archaic Indo-European languages, analysing them through the lens of generative linguistic theory. It also explains the methodological challenges of syntactic reconstruction and how they may be tackled. Ram-Prasad also alights on a wide range of points of comparative interest, including pronominal morphology, discourse movement and Wackernagel's Law. This book will appeal to classicists interested in understanding the Latin and Greek languages in their Indo-European context, as well as to trained comparative philologists and historical linguists with particular interests in syntax and reconstruction.

Although Zoroastrians in the contemporary world are numerically few - estimated recently at less than 150,000 across the globe - their ancient Iranian ancestors ruled vast areas of the Near East for over a millennium. From the mid-sixth century BCE to the mid-seventh century CE, the historical contribution of the 'Mazda-worshipping' religion to the intellectual, cultural, and political development of the region was momentous. The migration of some Zoroastrians to north-western India also had a significant social and economic impact on early modern and modern India. From the mid-seventeenth century until the present, Zoroastrianism has also played an important role in European discourse.

Written by a distinguished team of international contributors, including many Zoroastrians, The Zoroastrian World presents a global guide to Zoroastrianism from the earliest period to the modern day, offering original perspectives through substantial thematic contributions on the lived experience of Zoroastrian communities across the world. This volume is organised into five distinct sections:

  • Imagining Zoroastrianism
  • The Developing Zoroastrian World
  • Living Realities: Zoroastrian Narrative and Symbol in the Modern World
  • Contemporary Challenges in the Zoroastrian World
  • Creative Contributions from the Zoroastrian World

The Zoroastrian World provides an authoritative and accessible source of information on topics relating to the Zoroastrian religion, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary connections. The volume is essential reading for students engaged in studies of Religion, Philosophy and Ethics; Ancient and Modern Iran; the Near and Middle East; Central Asia; South Asian Religions; and Cultural History. The Zoroastrian World is intended for all curious readers, who seek to know more about this ancient, enduring religion.

The editors are excited to showcase the original artwork 'The Garden of the Universe' by Hormazd Narielwalla as the cover of this book.

Unlock the full potential of quantitative trading with Prescriptions for Quant Traders Using R-a practical, hands-on guide for turning data into trading decisions.

This book is written for quantitative traders, financial analysts, and data scientists who want more than theory. Organized into ten structured parts, it delivers step-by-step "prescriptions" using R-script-driven tasks that solve real-world trading problems. Each prescription is designed to be immediately actionable, so readers can move from concept to implementation without guesswork.

What makes this book different is its clarity, utility, and its link to online video walk-throughs of R scripts. The text flows seamlessly without interruptions, yet a comprehensive bibliography ensures depth and rigor. Every chapter blends explanation with executable code, enabling traders to:

  • Design systematic trading strategies in R - and understand why they work.
  • Apply robust statistical and econometric methods to financial data for better predictions.
  • Evaluate risk and performance metrics to refine strategies with confidence.
  • Automate workflows so insights move faster from model to market.

Whether you are a retail trader aiming to compete with professionals, a financial analyst seeking sharper models, or a data scientist expanding into trading, this book bridges the gap between theory and practice.

Readers will find special value in the prescription-based approach. Just as a doctor prescribes remedies, these scripts deliver targeted solutions to trading challenges-from portfolio optimization and volatility forecasting to Bayesian inference and machine learning integration.

In a marketplace where retail participation continues to grow, Prescriptions for Quant Traders Using R equips you with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to approach trading systematically. The result: deeper insights, stronger discipline, and strategies that stand the test of real-world markets.

Whether you're coding your first model or refining a sophisticated strategy, this book provides the prescriptions you need to succeed.

Despite the 'return of financial crises' since the end of the Bretton Woods era, a new generation of bankers hardly had any experience or any memory of a previous systemic financial crisis. The events of summer 2007 prompted investors, CEOs, and regulators to investigate the past to understand the present and foresee the future. The 2008 financial crisis strengthened the need to place financial crises in long-term historical perspectives, establish parallels, and make comparisons. Such comparisons, however, have remained sparse and generally reduced past financial crises to stylized facts in a quest for lessons that could be drawn rather than analysed their specifics. This book is a contribution of history to the study of financial crises, with a focus on whether and how the memory of previous crises has persisted, faded, or changed over time. Intertwining memory and narrative representations of the reality, it investigates the reasons why some crises have been selectively remembered and others apparently forgotten. It does so with a focus on the new era of financial instability that followed the end of the Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rates in 1973 - a period marked by a series of financial crises (1974, 1982, 1987, 1997, among others); economic, political, and cultural changes (globalization, deregulation, formalized mathematical economics), and culminating in the global financial crisis of 2008.

This highly informative book examines the form and process of infrastructure integration across the Asian continent. Colin Turner analyses key sub-regions to demonstrate how connectivity has been historically limited, as well as crucial opportunities for improvement.

Chapters investigate examples of formal regional integration agreements across Eurasia, including East and South Asia and Gulf-Co-operation Council states. Turner identifies how fractious relations and an erratic political economy has resulted in the stagnation of progress towards economic integration. Focusing on both hard and soft infrastructure systems, he evaluates influential case studies such as China's Belt and Road Initiative and pan-Asian connectivity initiatives to illustrate possibilities for successful infrastructural integration in Asia.

The Asian Infrastructure System is an essential resource for students and scholars of Asian studies, infrastructure, international political economy and urban and regional studies. It is also beneficial to practitioners of infrastructure planning and policy makers seeking to promote connection.

Supporting Equitable Assessment for Multilingual Learners of English introduces the E5 model of equitable assessment, an original ramework developed by the authors to guide fair and culturally responsive evaluation of multilingual learners of English. The model integrates five guiding principles: equity, equality, educational justice, equanimity, and empowerment, across three interrelated dimensions: affective, social-moral, and technical. Drawing on research, professional expertise, and lived classroom experience, the book examines the historical context of language assessment as well as its policies, the central role of emotional well-being, and the balance between content rigor and language accessibility. Each chapter combines conceptual foundations with practical tools, adaptable rubrics, and reflection prompts that enable educators to design assessments fostering student agency, cultural relevance, and academic mastery. The authors also address emerging opportunities and challenges, including the integration of technology, the impacts of global migration, and shifts in educational policy. By centering student voice and identity, this book provides educators, leaders, and policymakers with actionable strategies for building assessment systems that are academically rigorous, culturally grounded, and responsive to the evolving needs of today's students.

In the first independent study of the League of Red Cross Societies, an interdisciplinary team of leading scholars examine its history, and how it influenced twentieth-century humanitarianism. They explore how the League evolved from 1919 to 1991 as a peacetime organisation of the Red Cross in contrast to the original wartime focus of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Investigating largely unknown, but significant actors, they shed new light on the League's activities in Southeast Asia, the Horn of Africa, Latin America and Europe through case studies focussing on its global health initiatives, the complexity of its networks in war and peace, and its role in providing relief. The authors argue that it is impossible to understand today's Red Cross and Red Crescent movement and global humanitarianism without considering the structures, expertise and training provided by the League to member National Societies from 1919 to 1991.

This Element brings together historical sources and contemporary experiences to explore the interplay between singing, sociality, body, and meaning in the English landscape over the past century. It explores the connections between air and song and between singing and movement, through the context of the early twentieth century open-air recreation movement. This is supplemented by recent literature on singing and wellbeing, and the experiences of a contemporary walking choir captured via interviews in the field. The authors argue that outdoor singing has been part of co-constructed soundscapes of the modern English leisure landscape, and ask what this meant for those who participated in collective open-air singing and rambling. They explore how open-air singing connected with conceptions of the countryside, with a sense of fellow-feeling, and how this might have both reified and challenged normative ways of being in landscapes. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Dribbling Divides: Football, Islam, and Identity offers a compelling view of how global football intersects with Muslim identity, faith, and politics in an era shaped by migration, digital media, and rising populism. Drawing from rich case studies of elite Muslim footballers, this book examines how players navigate racism, Islamophobia, and national belonging while maintaining visible piety and engaging in activism. From fasting on match days to taking public stands on global Muslim issues, these athletes challenge dominant narratives about loyalty, integration, and modernity. Sociologist Kamaludeen Nasir brings a unique perspective as both a football fan and a scholar, offering insights into the lived realities of Muslim players in Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. He unpacks how club ownership, digital performance, gender politics, and faith-based practices shape the contemporary sporting landscape. By shifting the analytical gaze from fans to players, Dribbling Divides invites readers to see football not just as entertainment, but as a site of negotiation, resistance, and reimagined identity.

Diodoros of Sicily (c.90-c.30 BC) spent thirty years producing an encyclopedic compendium of world history from its mythical beginnings to his own day. His is the only surviving, connected account of Greek affairs from 480/79 to 302/1. The books translated in this volume offer the best account of the career of Philip II of Macedon, his conquest of Greece and his assassination, as well as the earliest extant history of the career of Alexander the Great. Book 16 is also the main source for the Persian re-conquest of Egypt by Artaxerxes III (Okhos), the seizure of Delphi by the Phokians in the Third Sacred War, and Athens' defeat by a coalition of her allies in the Social War. The translation is supported by extensive notes, and the Introduction examines Diodoros' moral and educational purpose in writing, the plan of his work, his sources, and his qualities as a historian.

A striking new perspective on women, religious spaces, and literary culture during the Ming and Qing erasFrom the sixteenth to early nineteenth centuries, Neo-Confucian ideology sought to reinforce the seclusion of women within the domestic sphere, while flourishing lay Buddhism increasingly fueled their passion for visiting temples and going on distant pilgrimages. Xu Ma explores this cultural tension to reveal how religious spaces-physical, imagined, and embodied-emerged as a "third social space" that both sustained and subverted the Confucian binaries of inside and outside, public and private.

Drawing on an impressive range of sources, from popular fiction and drama to biographical accounts and archaeological evidence, Ma shows how women's religious engagement was simultaneously celebrated and condemned in literary and cultural imagination. Outdoor temples were sites of controversy, where women were portrayed as both vulnerable to corruption yet also capable of transcendent manipulation. Through domestic altars and household shrines, women redefined marital and gendered dynamics on their own terms. Eventually, even the female body itself became a sacred site of meaning.

This richly interdisciplinary study redefines the place of women in Chinese religious and cultural history. By blending gender studies, spatial theory, and literary analysis, Boundaries and Bodhisattvas demonstrates how women's bodies and hearts reconfigured both Confucian gender paradigms and the broader religious landscape of late imperial China. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the intersections of gender, religion, and cultural narratives.

In the early eastern theater of the American Civil War, the Northern and Southern armies saw little of combat and little of each other, with most of their military intelligence more akin to propaganda than objective fact. However, by 1862 both sides knew through bloody experience how the other could fight, though gaps in knowledge of the other's tactics and political strategies remained. Perhaps most important, Northern soldiers had by then spent significant time in the South, and as they witnessed firsthand the effects of slavery, their attitudes hardened toward the South.

Covering all aspects of the war in Virginia in the first six months of 1862, Forward to Richmond treats the military actions in the Shenandoah Valley, the Piedmont, and the Peninsula as part of a theatre-wide campaign. Brian K. Burton goes beyond military events to also examine the political, social, and diplomatic interactions with military events, including the meetings of Union soldiers with Southern civilians and African Americans, ultimately leading to a turn away from conciliation and a beginning of a move toward support of emancipation.

This book explores the history of foreign astral science in China from the unique viewpoint of the knowledge introduced to the Middle Kingdom by monks, travellers, and merchants from different parts of Eurasia throughout the first millennium CE.

By comparing the extant works in Chinese with parallel materials in their original languages, including texts in Sanskrit and Pali for the Buddhist materials, and in other languages for works by the Nestorians, Zoroastrians, and Manicheans, this book fills a lacuna in the understanding of the role foreign scientific ideas played in Chinese and East Asian societies.

Including full English translations of a number of Chinese texts of foreign origin for the first time, together with commentaries and the critically edited original Chinese texts, this book will appeal to students and scholars of the history of science and Chinese history.

Millions of Muslims across the Indian Ocean littoral have historically followed a matrilineal system, where women had better economic and social stability and an upper hand in their personal choices. The system raised serious questions as the Islamic legal tradition evolved in the Middle East, especially when some inheritance customs gave men little to no share in the property. Bringing diverse matrilineal Muslim communities together for the first time, this volume studies their engagements against the patriarchal interpretations of Sharia in comparative and connected perspectives. The comparisons and connections go beyond the Indian Ocean and Islamic world, to the Mediterranean, Sub-Saharan and North African contexts as well as to the Christian, Jewish and Hindu traditions. The contributors explore how and why the followers of the matrilineal praxis defended the system within the legal epistemologies of their religion.

Trust matters in higher education, yet it is often taken for granted. This book shows how trust-between students and teachers, faculty and academic developers, or individuals and institutions-shapes the ways we teach, learn, and work together.

Drawing on fresh research and first-hand accounts from across the world, this book reveals that trust is not static but a dynamic, reciprocal process. It is cultivated gradually through care, credibility, and openness, and it enables people to share vulnerabilities, take risks, and imagine new possibilities for teaching and learning. Contributors explore trust at many levels: in the classroom, in academic development programmes, and within wider institutional and cultural contexts. They demonstrate how trust allows people to share vulnerabilities, engage in honest conversations, and take risks that lead to more inclusive and effective teaching. At the same time, they address the challenges of mistrust and the work required to establish trustworthy practices and structures.

Accessible and thought-provoking, this book offers valuable insights for anyone interested in the human relationships at the heart of higher education. It makes a compelling case that trust-building is not optional but integral to effective teaching, meaningful learning, and transformative academic development.

This book was originally published as a special issue of International Journal for Academic Development.

Like other professionals, interpreters - no matter in what mode, modality and setting they work in - are exposed to occupational hazards, which are often underestimated.

This book provides a comprehensive overview on interpreters' occupational health and safety issues, including suggestions about prevention and promotion of personal wellbeing. It is the result of a cross-disciplinary endeavour by interpreting researchers and occupational health specialists, with the aim to help practising interpreters to take their health and wellbeing into their own hands.

This book will be of interest to scholars and key stakeholders working or researching in interpreting.

A comprehensive study of D. T. Suzuki's Zen philosophy and philosophical psychology in relation to his Buddhist understanding of the "cosmic Unconscious."

This book explores how the Japanese philosopher D. T. Suzuki (1870-1966) developed an integral synthesis of Eastern and Western sources to establish a modern philosophical psychology of the "cosmic Unconscious," which he in turn used as the basis to interpret every aspect of Zen art, meditation, and enlightenment. Beyond Freud's personal unconscious and Jung's collective unconscious, according to Suzuki, is the cosmic Unconscious of Zen, which as absolute nothingness is the fountain of inexhaustible creative potentialities and the source of all Zen-inspired arts. The book demonstrates that, like the Kyoto School of modern Japanese philosophy, Suzuki's Zen endeavors to overcome the existential problem of nihilism or relative nothingness by shifting to the openness of absolute nothingness wherein emptiness is fullness and all things are disclosed in the evanescent beauty of their suchness. Suzuki, however, formulates his scheme in terms of a depth psychology where the cosmic Unconscious is the encompassing locus of absolute nothingness. Ultimately, the book argues that, by integrating both Eastern and Western views of the unconscious psyche, including the different schools of Zen and Mahayana Buddhism, as well as American, French, and German theories of the unconscious, Suzuki's Zen concept of the cosmic Unconscious constitutes a significant original contribution to philosophical psychology.

The devastation of Hungary and Poland by the Mongols in 1241-2 prompted Pope Innocent IV to dispatch embassies to the invaders, remonstrating with them and urging them to accept Christianity. The papal envoys were Friars - members of the two recently founded Mendicant Orders, the Franciscans and Dominicans, who were beginning frequently to serve as instruments of papal policy. Their reports represent the first detailed and largely accurate testimony produced by European Christians about a people, hitherto virtually unknown in the West, who had become masters of much of Asia.

Early Missions to the Mongols (1245-1248) thus focuses on a watershed period in the relations of the Christian West with this new and formidable pagan power. It comprises translations of Pope Innocent's letters, together with the limited information available to the papacy prior to 1245; the menacing replies brought back by the Friars; and their reports, which include narratives of their journeys and accounts of the Mongols and their vast empire. The translations are accompanied by introductory material setting the documents in their historical context and by a full commentary.

The volume will be of interest not only to students and scholars working on the history of the Mongol empire, but also to those concerned with the early development of the Mendicant Orders, papal policy towards the non-Christian world, the relations between sedentary and nomadic societies in the Middle Ages, and the discovery by the Christian West of distant and extensive regions previously shrouded in myth and fantasy.

Constructing the Medieval Maritime State: Identity, Violence, and Connection in the Mediterranean explores how the small medieval kingdom of Denia in Spain became a powerful maritime state after the collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate. Its rulers built authority, not only through war and seafaring raids but also by connecting Denia to wider Mediterranean trade, diplomacy, and culture. The rise and evolution of the taifa of Denia is a powerful case study for understanding the construction of medieval maritime states in the Mediterranean. Travis Bruce situates Denia within the collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate and explores how its rulers forged legitimacy through identity formation, maritime violence, and regional connectivity. Denia's identity was negotiated through rulership, unfreedom, and cultural hybridity, and violence ^-^particularly predatory warfare and maritime jihad ^-^ functioned as both statecraft and economic extraction. At the same time, Denia's entanglement in commercial, diplomatic, and intellectual networks positioned it as a key node linking the Islamic Mediterranean and the Latin West. The state's trajectory cannot be reduced to narratives of decline or simple religious conflict but instead reveals a process of negotiation shaped by mobility, interdependence, and the fluid boundaries between public and private power. This narrative reframes Mediterranean history beyond Eurocentric paradigms and underscores the significance of Islamic maritime states within the wider medieval world.
