This groundbreaking ethnography offers a deep psychological framework for understanding the Santa Muerte (Saint Death) phenomenon in Mexico. Emerging from a social landscape marked by ultra-violent criminality, government corruption, soaring rates of femicide, forced disappearances, and pervasive impunity, devotion to Santa Muerte signals a profound breakdown of the traditional Hispano-Christian image of God. Her veneration can be understood as a psychological response from a society grappling with 'bad death,' where loss and violence are ever-present in daily life.

Anchored in intimate case studies and a Jungian archetypal interpretation, the book demonstrates how Santa Muerte's inherent moral ambiguity enables devotees to navigate the blurred boundaries between good and evil, safety and peril, and justice and lawlessness. She stands as a potent response to the ongoing socio-political and psychological instability created by Mexico's dominant patriarchal institutions (state, church, and cartels).

The book explores the spirituality of the most vulnerable and marginalised in response to persistent threats and the collapse of conventional safety nets, arguing that devotion to Santa Muerte functions as a critical psychological container for destructive forces, offering a sense of order and control amid the real and existential dangers of a society living through the chaos of an 'apocalypse.' This is essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary Mexican studies, as it highlights the psychological impact of life near death.

Ethiopic Historiographical Texts contains selected papers, which were first presented at the International Workshop on Ethiopic Historiographical Texts, held at the University of Hamburg from June 29?30, 2023. The workshop was part of the DFG-funded project The Chronicle of King ?ar?a D?ng?l (r. 1563?1597). The contributions, which cover the period from the 14th to the 20th-century, examine royal chronicles, universal histories, a 19th-century Amharic chronicle, oral and written historiography, and archival materials. Edited by Solomon Gebreyes Beyene, the volume also explores the textual tradition of royal historiography, offers methodological reflections on the editing of such works, and examines the translation of historical texts in the late 19th-century under imperial patronage. The studies reassess earlier editions from the perspective of modern textual criticism, introduce newly identified manuscript evidence, and shed new light on the function, structure, and historical significance of Ethiopic historiography, while also considering its connections to liturgical literature and oral tradition.

Slavery and the Slave Trade in Ethiopian Studies offers a critical reappraisal of the history of slavery in Ethiopia ? an enduring yet often marginalized dimension of the country’s past ? by foregrounding the internal dynamics of slavery, the domestic slave trade, legal reforms, local interpretations and narratives of slavery and abolition, and the memory of enslavement. Drawing on new archival and ethnographic research, the contributions explore how slavery was embedded in Ethiopia’s social and political fabric and how its legacy continues to shape identities, social hierarchies and historical memory across generations. Spanning disciplinary boundaries, the volume combines historical depth with anthropological sensitivity to illuminate lived experiences, local institutions, and the shifting moral and political claims associated with bondage and freedom. With essays by both established and new scholars, this supplement to Aethiopica opens new avenues for understanding Ethiopia’s modern history. It is an essential resource for scholars of African history as well as readers interested in the long-term impact of slavery and the rise of contemporary Ethiopia.

During the 1980s, as global antiapartheid sentiment grew, an international coalition of far-right activists arose to preserve racial hierarchy in South Africa and beyond. This groundbreaking book tells the story of how a transatlantic pro-apartheid movement attempted to defend white rule in South Africa-and forged enduring links between global conservatism and white power.

By mapping an international network of white supremacist organizations, Augusta Dell'Omo reveals a fundamental shift in far-right organizing in response to changing geopolitical realities. The pro-apartheid movement brought together a range of figures who sought to influence the conservative Western governments they saw as allies. As antiapartheid activism grew, the South African regime crumbled, and the post-Cold War order took shape, apartheid's defenders adapted their ideology for a colorblind, human rights-centric, and neoliberal world. Their successes and failures shaped the antistatist trajectory of white supremacist organizing in the 1990s and beyond, planting the seeds for a global resurgence of the far right.

Saving Apartheid ranges from Reagan's Oval Office to South Africa's bantustans and from white women's grassroots organizing to evangelical broadcasting, illuminating how an unlikely coalition reimagined white supremacy. Uncovering the surprising influence of apartheid's defenders, this book offers a prehistory of the present.

Just transition offers a way for fossil fuel-dependent economies to meet climate goals while ensuring that society as a whole - communities, workers, young people and marginalised groups - remains in the forefront of the conversation.

This book explores the political economy of just transition in East, West and Southern Africa in order to shine a light on contested epistemologies, policy configurations and case studies of practice at various scales. In the African context, just transition is particularly significant due to the continent's rich natural resources, including oil, gas and minerals, which have historically been exploited without adequate consideration for environmental sustainability and local communities' socio-economic rights. This book analyses how a just transition, in practice, should aim to rectify these historical injustices by promoting inclusive decision-making processes that involve the affected groups, workers and communities. Bringing together leading scholars in the field, who apply a climate justice analytical lens and just transition concepts, the chapters question the extent to which pathways towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 are achievable in Africa and whether this can be attained without undermining economic growth, jobs, livelihoods and lives.

Just Transition and Climate Justice in Sub-Saharan Africa will be an important read for policymakers and researchers in the fields of climate justice, environmental law, African and environmental studies.

What if the most consequential alliance between the United States and Turkey was not signed-but screened? Beginning in 1930 and crystallizing during the Cold War, the two nations forged an alliance through film: American and Turkish institutions used educational films-short documentaries shown in schools, villages, theaters, and public spaces-not just to inform but to persuade. These films promoted cooperation, encouraged economic development, and modeled ideals of modern citizenship. Yet beneath their instructional surface, they also advanced a racialized vision of progress.

Film Diplomacy offers a powerful new account of how film shaped international relations and national identity. Drawing on previously unexamined and recently declassified archives in Turkey and the United States, Aysehan Juelide Etem demonstrates how both countries used educational films to align institutional agendas and geopolitical interests. The United States built on missionaries' earlier use of film programs while shifting from Christianization to modernization to promote free market capitalism and prevent the spread of communism. Turkish officials embraced film to promote a homogenous, secular, and Western-facing national identity that erased groups such as Armenians, Blacks, Greeks, Jews, and Kurds. In both contexts, whiteness operated as an invisible standard-shaping who belonged, who was excluded, and what counted as modern.

By tracing the transnational network of educational cinema, Etem uncovers how film functioned as infrastructure, circulating ideologies, organizing institutions, and training citizens. Moving beyond conventional accounts of propaganda and soft power, this book exposes how film was central to the making of modern Turkey and sheds new light on media's role in global politics.

This book explores the post-harem lives of Ottoman palace women who, unlike valide sultans, mothers of princes (sehzades), or imperial princesses (hanim sultans), lost their formal prominence after the death of the reigning sultan and have remained largely overlooked in imperial historiography. These women, often without surviving children or powerful networks, have been relegated to the background of dynastic narratives and treated as peripheral figures in mainstream history writing. Focusing on the consorts of Sultan Abduelhamid I (r. 1774-1789), this volume examines how these women sustained their social status, financial stability, and symbolic ties to the dynasty in the aftermath of palace life. Drawing upon a wide range of Ottoman archival materials, including rental agreements, vakfiye (waqf deeds), household expense records, and posthumous inventories, it reveals the economic strategies, spatial transitions, and charitable activities through which these women rebuilt a sense of belonging and dynastic visibility outside the palace walls. The book demonstrates that although these women did not enjoy fixed entitlements from the central treasury, they succeeded in securing stable and long-term income sources through investments in rental properties, esham bonds, and agricultural estates. Their engagement with the imperial revenue system, distinct from that of valide sultans and hanim sultans, shows an alternative but equally structured model of female economic agency. By tracing these overlooked trajectories, the book offers a fresh lens on gender, space, and power in the Ottoman Empire and fills a critical gap in the literature on dynastic wealth, representation, and imperial femininity. The book will be of great interest to students, researchers, and educators working in the fields of Ottoman history, gender studies, Middle Eastern economic history, cultural anthropology, and sociology.

Grounded in ethnographic research over five years in Palestinian villages near Bethlehem, Olive Growing in Palestine follows the lives of four families and fifty other individuals involved with olive growing as a form of resistance. Providing a counterpoint to Eurocentric studies of daily lives and labor, Simaan shares perspectives from Global South scholarship, which offers alternate analysis of why people do what they do and how they respond to adversity. The book focuses on two questions. First, how has Israeli settler colonialism affected olive farmers' daily lives? And second, how do olive farmers respond to the restrictions on their daily activities imposed by structures and policies that aim to divorce them from their land and trees?

Olive Growing in Palestine explores a collection of values and action that shape, and are shaped by, the daily lives of these farmers: Sutra (doing for being), 'Awna (doing for belonging), and Sumud (doing for belonging and becoming). These values recalibrate and expand our understanding of Global South knowledge and practice. That recalibration gives communities, activists, and scholars new tools to counter global forces of ethnic-based discrimination, imperialism, colonialism, white supremacy, and the human-made climate crisis.

Iran's Soft Power: Influence Across the Globe provides a timely and comprehensive analysis of how the Islamic Republic has projected its influence through cultural, ideological and humanitarian means across key regions of the Global South.

Focusing on the Middle East, Latin America and Africa, this book offers an in-depth examination of Iran's soft power strategies, including the promotion of religious and political ideology, educational and humanitarian outreach and the use of cultural diplomacy. Drawing on recent examples, it explores how Iranian institutions - such as cultural centres, media outlets and religious networks - have worked to extend Tehran's global presence beyond traditional military or economic power. The book also addresses the structural limits and geopolitical challenges that constrain Iran's soft power, offering a nuanced assessment of its reach across different socio-political contexts.

This volume will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations, Middle East studies and global politics, as well as policymakers and analysts seeking to understand Iran's evolving role in international affairs through the lens of soft power.

Dictators and the Higher Education Dilemma explores a powerful contradiction at the heart of modern authoritarian regimes: While universities are essential for producing skilled labor and projecting national progress, they also cultivate critical thinkers who can challenge state power. Drawing on Iran's modern history, from the Pahlavi monarchy to the Islamic Republic, Saeid Golkar shows how dictators use universities not only to train technocrats and showcase development but also as tools for shaping ideology, suppressing dissent, and co-opting academics. In authoritarian systems, education becomes a double-edged sword, essential for growth yet dangerous when it empowers independent thought. Golkar reveals how regimes manipulate admissions, censor curricula, and reward loyalty to create compliant intellectuals and loyal elites. Blending personal experience with rich historical and political analysis, this book exposes the tactics used to turn universities into instruments of social control. It speaks to a growing trend worldwide, offering vital insights into the clash between authoritarian power and academic freedom from Iran to China, Russia, and beyond.

We are still coming to terms with the controversial figure of Hannah Arendt. Interlacing her life and work, this book is an elegant, sophisticated biography brimming with historical and philosophical insight.

Focusing on the theme of female genius, Julia Kristeva emphasizes three features of the philosopher's work. First, by exploring Arendt's critique of Saint Augustine and her biographical essay on Rahel Varnhagen, Kristeva accentuates Arendt's commitment to recounting lives and narration. Second, Kristeva reflects on Arendt's perspective on Judaism, anti-Semitism, and the "banality of evil." Finally, the biography assesses Arendt's intellectual journey, placing her enthusiasm for observing both social phenomena and political events in the context of her personal life.

Drawing on fragments of Arendt's correspondence with her longtime lover Martin Heidegger and her husband Heinrich Blucher, excerpts from her mother's "Unser Kind" (a diary tracking Hannah's formative years), and passages from Arendt's philosophical writings, Kristeva presents a luminous account of an essential thinker.

Aurangzeb 'Alamgir (r. 1658-1707) was the last of the so-called 'great' Mughal emperors. He remains a controversial historical figure: castigated for religious intolerance and placed at the centre of a narrative of Mughal decline by some; considered a great Muslim hero by others. In this richly researched exploration of Aurangzeb 'Alamgir's life and times, Munis D. Faruqui contests such simplistic understandings to unearth a more nuanced picture of the emperor and his reign. Drawing on a large and varied archive, Faruqui provides new insights into the emperor's rise to power, his administrative and religious policies, and the role of the imperial eunuchate and harem. By unpicking the complex dynamics of a long reign, from Aurangzeb 'Alamgir's accession to the last weeks of his life and his eighteenth-century memorialisation, this remarkable new history cuts through the many myths that have obscured the extraordinary life story of Emperor Aurangzeb 'Alamgir.

Soon after independence in 1947, the Pakistani government adopted a language policy that promoted the use of Urdu. This provoked a strong reaction in provinces where languages such as Bengali, Sindhi, Punjabi, Pashto, and Balochi were spoken by the majority, giving rise to movements that sought to protect them. In Punjab, provincial authorities decreed that Urdu would be the sole language of administration and education. In response, intellectuals launched three separate movements between 1947 and 1960 for the defense and promotion of Punjabi, divided along the lines of their political and literary affiliations: Marxists, conservatives, and modernists.

Linguistic Resistance in Pakistan examines these three movements, taking an interdisciplinary perspective that combines sociological, historical, political, and literary approaches. Drawing on previously unexplored archival sources in Punjabi and Urdu as well as interviews conducted with activists and intellectuals, Julien Columeau analyzes the trajectories of the movements and key figures within them. He explores the context in which language movements emerged, considering the status of Punjabi before and after independence, the policy of Urdu imposition led by the central and provincial authorities, and the postindependence intellectual landscape. Columeau traces the history of the three Punjabi language movements, assessing their influence and the factors leading to success or failure. Shedding new light on the politics of language in Pakistan, this book is an important contribution to South Asian intellectual history.

Ju?rgen Habermas is Germany's most important postwar philosopher, the leading figure of the Frankfurt School in this period. He is best known for the concept of the public sphere, which forms the basis of his communicative understanding of democratic politics. Habermas has not only theorized the public sphere-he has also taken part in it through frequent commentary on current social, political, and cultural issues. Yet since Habermas's extensive public-facing writings have been overlooked, his philosophy has often been criticized as apolitical.

This book transforms our understanding of Habermas by focusing on his work as a public intellectual, showing how he has shaped debates far beyond the ivory tower. Peter J. Verovsek argues that while Habermas maintains a strict separation between his academic and his public-facing writings, he has also ensured that these two aspects of his work are part of a consistent whole. The book highlights the development of Habermas's views over time and the changing nature of his public interventions. His early political writings focused on questions tied to the particular situation of postwar West Germany, but since 1989 he has increasingly turned his attention to the future of Europe and global politics more broadly. Verovsek sheds light on the interrelationship between Habermas's participation in the public sphere and his theoretical work, demonstrating that his political engagement is crucial to understanding his philosophy. In a moment when public debate is under threat, this book offers timely new insight into Habermas's lifelong project of defending the public sphere-both in theory and in practice.

The Korean War was never formally declared, and no peace treaty ending the war was ever signed. The 1953 armistice did not stop the war but marked its extension and expansion into a warlike state of emergency. How did the new reality of life under armistice shape visions of the possible in North and South Korea? What meanings are attached to deaths in a so-called "limited war" that turned out to be limitless? What does the lack of an end to the Korean War reveal about the nature of war in the post-1945 era?

Theodore Hughes crosses borders to demonstrate how stories of dying and death-what he calls the thanatographic imagination-in North Korea, the United States, and South Korea energize ideas about history, the present, and the future. Death Without End shows how literary texts, films, nonfiction, and other forms of cultural production from the late 1940s to the 1960s give rise to revolutionary belongings, gendered selfhoods, and anticommunist cosmopolitanisms as they address the incommensurate loss of life, violence, destruction, and suffering of the war. Hughes also traces how the Korean War entered US popular culture in unexpected but enduring ways. Bridging Korean studies, American studies, and the cultural turn in international relations, this book offers new ways to understand the unending Korean War and the global implications of its logic of limitlessness.

Since it first mesmerized Western audiences in the early 20th century, Balinese masked dance-drama (Topeng) has drawn sustained scholarly attention. Yet until now, much of that attention has been filtered through non-Balinese perspectives. Telling Other Tales seeks to redress this imbalance by presenting Topeng as a living, plural tradition-one whose meaning is co-created by Balinese and non-Balinese performers, scholars and other observers alike. In these essays, academic rigor and personal testimony sit in rich dialogue. Historians, anthropologists and theatre scholars engage alongside Balinese priests, musicians and Topeng practitioners, weaving together formal analysis with evocative reflections. Together, they illuminate how this ancient theatrical form is not only studied, but lived, acted and re-imagined in the everyday.

This volume will appeal to scholars of performance, Asian studies and cultural anthropology-or to anyone curious about how traditional forms both shape and are shaped by the many people who carry them forward.

Explores Muslim queer and trans experiences in the world's largest Muslim-majority country

Many gender and sexual minorities in Indonesia remain practicing Muslims, but they face violence stemming from Muslim society's rejection of their sexual and gender identities. With their faith often pitted against their desires and ways of living, many are confronted with a forced choice between two seemingly irreconcilable ways of being.

Drawing on ethnographic research in multiple locations in Indonesia, Enduring Otherwise examines how Muslim individuals and communities grapple with the challenges and possibilities of inhabiting queer and trans religiosity. Some distance themselves from religious tenets because of the harms implicated in them, while others immerse themselves in religious practices and spiritual values, seeking to reimagine them. There are also those who remain caught in tensions, having to navigate a life entrenched in ambivalence. Yet across these varied engagements, they continue to find ways to keep going.

This book showcases how everyday gestures of endurance complicate widely held notions of survival and resilience. Through such actions, Muslim queer and trans subjectivities build complex relationships with faith, piety, and religious norms, while also laying the groundwork to transform the conditions that marginalize them.

Offering a nuanced account of the affective politics of worldmaking at the intersection of sexuality, gender, and religion, Enduring Otherwise highlights how the drawn-out moments of hope, failure, improvisation, and exhaustion experienced by queer and gender non-conforming Indonesians configure efforts to create a world where no one will have to endure the unendurable anymore.

In recent years, China has played an increasingly significant role in international affairs, wielding its economic and political strength to solidify its position as a global power. Within its immediate neighborhood, however, Chinese influence is not new. Chinese actions have affected how the Indian and Pakistani states have perceived and responded to domestic governance and security challenges since the early days of independence.

Connecting international politics with domestic security, Harrison Akins shows how India and Pakistan's engagement with China has shaped the two governments' policies toward their strategic frontiers over the past seventy years. He focuses on northeastern India and Pakistan's Balochistan Province, peripheries that have been at the center of both countries' relationships with China and that continue to present pressing security and development challenges. In contrast to the conventional focus on state-to-state relations, Akins emphasizes frontiers and their ties to central governments. He demonstrates that China's presence spurred the Indian and Pakistani governments to assert their sovereignty over these border regions, exacerbating conditions that led to the outbreak of antistate violence. Featuring comprehensive research and keen analysis, Adversary and Ally offers new insights into the pressures confronting South Asian governments and the limits of China's reach.

On the Chinese internet, alternate history is booming. Millions of writers and readers fantasize about going back in time and changing their country's fate. One envisions saving the Southern Song Dynasty from the Mongols and turning China into a capitalist democracy. Another portrays a contemporary traveling to 1905 and sparking a communist revolution before the Chinese Communist Party was even founded. These stories and others like them share a theme of national revival that echoes both the official narrative of the "Chinese dream" and populist movements around the world. Why is alt-history so popular in China, and what does it reveal about politics and culture under authoritarianism?

Rongbin Han examines the production and consumption of online alt-history fiction in China, offering new insight into how authoritarian rule gains popular consent. Combining in-depth digital ethnography with analysis of dozens of alt-history novels, he explores how state intervention, market forces, and consumer preferences interact. Han argues that alt-history literature is a project of imagining an ideal China, which simultaneously legitimizes and contests state ideology. Tracing the popular resonance of the regime's nationalist vision, he demonstrates how citizens play a crucial role in constructing and maintaining the state's dominance. Because many see national revival as imminent under the party's leadership, they are willing to tolerate authoritarian rule, in contrast to Western democracies, where discontent has fueled populist politics. Introducing readers to the uncanny world of alt-history, Make China Great Again underscores how aspirations for the rebirth of the nation can bolster undemocratic politics-in China and elsewhere.
