Drawing on vivid narratives and diverse case studies, the book examines how communities are using communication to address issues such as gender inequality, public health, human rights, and participatory governance. It highlights the rise of digital activism and grassroots movements that are redefining civic engagement and social transformation. By showcasing how new media technologies enable individuals to craft their own narratives, the book emphasises communication's crucial role in fostering collective agency and sustainable change.
This book is aimed at scholars, practitioners, and policymakers in political science, development studies, and media and communication. It will also appeal to activists, journalists, and students who seek to understand how communication can be used to amplify marginalised voices and generate lasting social impact across Sub-Saharan Africa.

This book examines the foundations of Morocco's approach to green energy and environmental sustainability politics and, through the approach of autocracy research, offers a new perspective on the country's environmental turn during the reign of King Mohammed VI.
International accolades have rained on the Moroccan regime for its transition toward green energy and environmental sustainability politics. Green mega projects, such as the Noor Ouarzazate solar plants and Morocco's vast wind farms, contributed considerably to its reputation as a modern green kingdom. Within the nascent field of political ecology of the MENA region, the book examines the correlation between environmental sustainability politics and autocratic power. It proposes that the Moroccan regime strategically instrumentalizes this policy field to bolster regime resilience through legitimation strategies directed both at domestic and foreign audiences, as well as cooptive practices aimed at generating support among national as well as foreign elites. Inevitably, the book returns to the Western Sahara conflict and the role environmental sustainability politics play in Morocco's attempt at its annexation.
This book is perfect for undergraduates, postgraduates, and scholars alike. It speaks to a broad academic readership interested in modern Morocco and the Maghreb, as well as political and environmental studies.

This book examines the value of innovative technologies to intelligence organizations, with a particular focus on the United States.
It addresses how intelligence organizations and their partners keep up with innovations that will make or break their ability to continue to produce effective intelligence. The work uses a four-dimensional definition of technology as artifact, knowledge base, administrative support structure, and coordinating system, which enables analysis of the full range of technical, human, organizational, social, and governmental factors upon which successful technological innovation depends. This approach produced in-depth analyses by 14 subject-matter experts of topics ranging from artificial intelligence, unmanned aerial systems, and cyber intelligence to democratic governance issues, outsourcing needs, and workforce dynamics as large numbers of "Generation Z" workers enter the IC workforce. These analyses both explore specific aspects of and highlight interconnections among important cutting-edge technologies that intelligence agencies must adopt to remain effective.
This will be of much interest to students of intelligence studies, national security, science and technology studies, and International Relations, as well as practitioners.

This book explores the role played by museums and museum exhibitions in South Korea's cultural diplomacy and international projection of itself to the world.
Based on extensive archival research and fieldwork in cultural diplomatic institutions across South Korea, Britain, and the United States, this book charts the important role played by this form of cultural diplomacy. It considers specific travelling exhibitions including Masterpieces of Korean Art, which was on tour from 1957 to 1962, and 5000 Years of Korean Art, on tour from 1976 to 1985, and permanent and special exhibitions in the Korea Foundation Gallery in the British Museum and the Arts of Korea in the Metropolitan Museum of Art globally. This book goes on to examine the place of museums in South Korea's cultural diplomacy overall, explores the connections with South Korea's very successful development of its cultural sector, and concludes by assessing the effectiveness for South Korea of prioritising this form of soft power projection.
Analysing the developmental stages of South Korean cultural diplomacy in relation to international museum exhibitions, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of Korean history, culture and diplomacy as well as museums studies.

Territorializing Democracy argues that the political control of space is key to understanding political participation in the city. Drawing on a decade of research in Buenos Aires, this book shows that participation is not simply a response to innovations in urban governance; it is a strategy rooted in the relational context of territory. Examining key sites of activism over recent years-campaigning for a people's park, upgrading an informal settlement, the "national-popular" movement of Kirchnerism, and struggles over urban redevelopment-the analysis contributes to pressing democratic debates around autonomy and self-management, populism and clientelism, and democratic innovation and "participatory articulations." Through the lens of space and geography, this book offers a relational analysis of popular participation, working between multiple neighborhoods and scales, across different struggles, and between the streets and political institutions, activists, and politicians. In doing so, Halvorsen proposes a dual understanding of the territorialization of democracy: a reflection of the changing political conditions shaping cities today and a tool for assessing how democratic practices emerge from specific, grounded struggles over space.

The book highlights how images shape Europe's migration policies, using the pivotal 2015 'refugee crisis' as a lens to examine the complex intersection of visual media and border governance.
Understanding visual border politics as situated practices of meaning-making that operate against the background of a structured visual order, it presents a critical framework that combines analyses of policy discourse and visual media discourse. Drawing on a broad sample of policy documents, a large visual dataset, and media analysis, the book adds complexity to existing analyses of visual politics in the context of migration. It shows that visual border politics do not operate in straightforward ways but are instead contextually bound. Whether images can be mobilized to legitimate policies depends on a number of factors, such as current and previous policies, the discursive climate, domestic developments, collective visual memories, and constitutions of collective identities.
Drawing on insights from critical migration and border studies, critical security studies, visual international relations, visual culture studies, and memory studies, this volume will be of interest for multiple disciplines, including international relations, politics, sociology, anthropology, European studies, cultural studies, media and communication studies, history, geography, and international law.

This book examines audio-visual content production in Africa, highlighting the ways in which the rise of social networking platforms has combatted the marginalisation of minority languages across the continent.
Colonial languages have tended to dominate audio-visual narratives in Africa, and although postcolonial film and video production initiatives have tried to counter this, in practice they perpetuate the marginalisation of minority language groups by favouring major indigenous languages such as isiZulu in South Africa, Shona in Zimbabwe, Yoruba or Igbo in Nigeria. This book demonstrates the ways in which the internet and the accompanying boom in popularity of visual social networking applications such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, X, and Vimeo have disrupted dominant language video productions and traditional media marketing models. As audiences have fragmented, seeking out content produced in their own languages, traditional gatekeepers have been challenged. Drawing on studies from across the continent, the book demonstrates the varied and multifaceted ways in which minority language audio-visual content creators are using these platforms to negotiate with or contest dominant languages.
This timely investigation into the political economy of contemporary audio-visual production in minority languages in Africa will be of interest to researchers across media studies and sociolinguistics in Africa.

Making Effective Graphs in the Social Sciences provides the knowledge and skills for creating graphs that are easy to interpret accurately.
This includes: (a) knowledge of the different types of graphs and under what circumstances each graph is appropriate, (b) knowledge of what decisions to make when choosing graph components, such as the type of axis or data symbols, and what evidence supports those decisions, and (c) how to use consistency within and across graphs to make your graphs easier to understand. In addition to developing this knowledge base, practical skills are developed for creating effective graphs in Microsoft Excel, IBM SPSS Statistics software ("SPSS"), and R. For Microsoft Excel and SPSS, this includes illustrated and annotated step-by-step instructions. Electronic resources, including full Excel and SPSS appendices and downloadable datasets hosted on the Routledge product page, support the worked examples in the book. Social science researchers and students in data-based social science courses will benefit from the focus on both knowledge and practical skills.
Instructors will find the book self-contained - allowing students to make more effective graphs with minimal instructor intervention.

This book addresses the causes of civilian targeting during counterinsurgency campaigns in occupied territories.
It develops a new theoretical framework explaining the level of civilian victimization in expeditionary counterinsurgency as an outcome influenced by state leaders' perceptions of threats and constraints in international and local political contexts. Understanding civilian targeting as risk-taking behaviour, the book pairs Realism's tenets with prospect theory's insight that people, including state leaders, become risk-tolerant to avoid or recoup losses. The book argues that the inclination of the leaders in charge of counterinsurgency to take the risks of civilian targeting will vary according to their local alliance strategy in the occupied society and their perceptions of external threats against the occupied territory. Accordingly, the book identifies four scenarios from combinations of local alliance strategy and external threat perceptions that shape leaders' risk-tolerance and are conducive to specific levels of civilian targeting through distinctive causal pathways. The book tests its arguments against cases of British, French, German, US, Saudi, and Israeli counterinsurgency (including the Gaza War), before considering the policy implications for the protection of civilians.
This book will be of interest to students of counterinsurgency, military and strategic studies, human rights and International Relations.

Providing an in-depth exploration into the rivers of Habsburg Galicia (part of Austrian Poland) in the 19th century, this volume combines analysis of historical hydrographic data with modern GIS and remote sensing tools.
Considering geographical and historical factors, this book draws on both natural processes and human activities to analyse how river valleys function and highlight contemporary challenges relating to water resource management in the context of climate change. This collection is divided into four sections: Rivers, Flow, Control and Economy. The first section consists of studies on rivers in Galicia from geographical, borderland, legislative and literary perspectives. The second section deals with the floods that regularly affected Galicia in the 19th and 20th centuries, causing significant economic and social damage, providing pertinent parallels with current issues in the context of climate change. The third section analyses the actions of the state and autonomous authorities, aimed at controlling rivers through regulation, the construction of flood embankments and the drainage of wetlands. The final section includes studies on the role of rivers in the economic life.
This is a detailed and fascinating examination for scholars and students interested in Eastern European environmental history, hydrology, environmental management and water resource governance, and environmental economics.

This book investigates how educational anxiety shapes the everyday lives and moral worlds of China's middle-class parents, revealing how emotion, modernity, and meritocracy intersect in a rapidly changing society. It offers a sociocultural perspective on family aspirations and the politics of schooling in contemporary China.
Educational anxiety has become a defining feature of China's middle class, shaping their family life and visions of the future. This book brings together six in-depth studies that explore how parents navigate the moral, emotional, and institutional pressures of educating their children in an era of uncertainty. From the 'double reduction' reforms to transnational schooling choices, the chapters reveal how anxiety is both a symptom of and a response to China's rapidly transforming education system and social structure. Drawing on psychology, sociology, and cultural studies, the book situates educational anxiety within broader processes of modernization, meritocracy, and social mobility. By examining parental reflexivity, risk management, and emotional investment, it offers an original framework for understanding the lived experiences of middle-class families in China-and their implications for global debates on education, inequality, and family change.

This book seeks to broaden the conversation in migration studies by incorporating a collective perspective, as illustrated by the case study of Hadiya migration from Southern Ethiopia to South Africa.
Rather than presenting individualism and communalism as opposing forces, the authors conceptualize them as points on a continuum. At the starting end, communal ties are crucial, particularly in the early stages of the Hadiya migration, but over time, as migrants accumulate wealth and encounter increasing competition in South Africa's informal economy, individualism begins to take precedence, gradually unravelling the social fabric that initially supported collective success. This temporal perspective offers a more nuanced understanding of migration, revealing how it transitions from a collective endeavour to an increasingly individualistic one as circumstances evolve.
A convincing and compelling new volume which highlights the transformation of the migration process from a predominantly collectivist endeavour to one characterized by increased individualism, and the resulting need for a temporal perspective to avoid the pitfalls of a binary framework, it will appeal to scholars and students of migration studies, development studies, sociology and African studies.

This book brings together fifteen chapters involving extraordinary primary material, evidences, and experiences of the rapidly shrinking single-screen spaces and transforming viewing cultures in the big cities and towns across India. It emphasizes on the material history of cinema - a history of one hundred years and more, intrinsically linked with accounts of the late colonial period, nation, democracy, as well as film industry, flow of capital, movement of people, traffic of the cinematic, urban and public cultures. The volume unpacks the history of cinema in India by exploring collective experiences at the site of cinema-halls.
Scholars of cinema have considered subjects of infrastructure, micro- industries, industrial networks, media-ecologies, intermediality, as well as matters of performance, media-forms, and the labouring body. This volume complicates existing researches via the study of exhibition sites at Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Allahabad, Pune, Jamshedpur, Tirunelveli, Anantnag, and Srinagar. By problematizing the nostalgic gaze hovering over defunct single-theatres, the volume produces a pioneering reading of manifold film cultures in India. It focuses on history of places, peoples, practices, film publicity, architecture, urban and peri-urban spaces to generate a social history of cinema; rethinks issues of tangible and intangible archives; and provides methods to address the lacunae within cinema studies.
This interdisciplinary volume will be invaluable to scholars and students across multiple fields including cinema and media studies, cultural studies, urban studies, visual studies, South Asian studies, and social history. It will be particularly useful for researchers working on film industry and exhibition cultures, viewership, urban history, media archaeology, and socio-political aspects of cinema.

At once too complex, too simplistic, and overly focused on communicating and accumulating scientific facts, the stories we tell about climate change often reduce the problem to singular issues, such as CO2 emissions, while advocating out-of-this-world technofixes. Against this challenge, the term "polycrisis" has emerged to describe the interconnected environmental and social crises we are confronting in the 21st century. The polycrisis encompasses much more than catch-all terms such as climate change and global warming, connecting issues as diverse as biodiversity and habitat loss, water and food scarcity, pollution, and resource depletion, as well as growing economic and social precarity. Through a series of essays and interviews with scholars, scientists, artists, and activists, this volume seeks to articulate existential and educational responses and interventions to the polycrisis. The author presents a terrestrial vision for critical eco-pedagogy, arguing that educational freedom in this time is not unlimited or unbounded, but rather cultivated through an engagement with limits and limitations-most fundamentally, the limits of a planet with limited resources and carrying capacity.
This timely volume will be of interest to researchers and teachers interested in environmental education, as well as posthumanism, decolonizing education, arts-based research methods, and postgrowth theory.

This book considers how people of African descent can generate policies and ideas for the twenty-first century that are embedded in the ideals of Pan-Africanism.
For decades, Pan-Africanism has championed an intellectual ideal that recognizes the unity of people of African descent in their efforts to resist imperialism, racism, slavery, inequality, and neo-colonialism while advancing the decolonization of Africa. Yet, despite the Pan-African commitment to self-determination and transformation based on common interests and identities, in many areas of Africa there has been a resurgence in the discrimination and suppression of people of African descent, marked by fraudulent elections, the suppression of opposition parties and the media, and the exile of key intellectual figures. This book argues that Pan-African ideas can help to provide practical solutions that address both persisting and emerging challenges, such as the scramble for material wealth by Europeans and now the Chinese. Interdisciplinary and collaborative by design, this book brings together a range of themes, from women's contributions to the movement, to Ubuntu, to the role of religion, politics, and the environment, with the intention of mobilising a new generation to reclaim their African culture, knowledge, dignity and equality.
This important new book will be of interest to Pan-African researchers and students across the social sciences, as well as to activists and civil society actors.

Moving beyond the conventional binary logic of state and society, this book reveals how borderlands emerge as both contested and negotiated terrains shaped by historical legacies and contemporary practices co-produced by the state and people.
Migration across borders has become a more contentious political question in contemporary South Asia than ever, especially in the context of recent populist assertions and migration politics. Going beyond the predominant political narrative, the essays in this book not only engage with everyday life as it unfolds in marriage and kinship relations and ethnic and cultural practices at borderlands but also address critical issues that shape everyday life under socio-political, economic, and legal conditions, such as policing, conflicts and violence, illegality, and other forms of precarity for migrant subjects. This book shows that borderlands are not passive edges of the nation-state but lived, socially vivacious zones where people routinely transgress, reinterpret, and negotiate the meaning of borders.
An important addition to the political anthropology/sociology of migration and borderlands in South Asia, this book will be an invaluable resource to researchers of social and political anthropology, sociology, and South Asian societies. The chapters were originally published as a special issue of Asian Ethnicity and are accompanied by a new discussion essay.

From the beginning of the colonial period, western musical forms and practices have travelled to the subcontinent, interacted with domestic sound cultures, and played a significant role in the making of Indian modernity. As the contributions in the volume show, it would be popular western styles like ragtime, jazz and rock n' roll that had the greatest impact on Indian culture and social life. Thus, in the nineteen thirties and forties, American jazz served as a powerful catalyst for local musicians who would create Bollywood film music. After Independence, contemporary western music played a big role in the formation of urban youth culture, a process that consisted of regular pop programming on All India Radio, music festivals at the IITs and other colleges, the rise of clubs, discos and local rock bands, and widespread coverage in English-language magazines like The Junior Statesman and Youth Times. Today, western popular music forms like electronic music and rap continue to fertilize India's musical milieu, but do so within the larger context of globalization and digital culture.
This book will appeal to students, researchers and scholars of ethnomusicology, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, and South Asian studies, as well as anyone interested in the intersection of music, culture, and modernity.
The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of South Asian History and Culture.

This book is a comprehensive study of the history and contemporary nature of the politics and relations between the two main subcontinental rivals of South Asia: India and Pakistan. It analyses the class structure and discourses of democracy and development in both India and Pakistan, apart from all the major issues that dominate the history and contemporary politics of India-Pakistan relations. It also examines the Kashmir dispute, cross-border terrorism, the nuclear discord between India and Pakistan, the role of the United States in South Asia and the various confidence-building measures (CBMs) initiated between India and Pakistan, as well as outlines the future course of India-Pakistan relations. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of South Asian studies, peace and conflict studies and contemporary politics.

This book traces the cultural and political economic routes through which East Pakistan was re-imagined as Bangladesh. It explores the social, cultural, and political strands that informed and influenced the experience of Bengali-speaking people in the region from 1947 to 1971 and beyond.
Featuring cutting-edge contributions from scholars from across Bangladesh, Canada, India, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the book highlights the complex and contested ways in which a Bengali homeland was imagined, articulated, and, when the subjects were removed from it, remembered. Chapters engage with several significant historical issues that led to the 1971 India-Pakistan war: the refugee exodus and process of minoritization caused by the partition of 1947; the cultural world of East Pakistan, and the struggle for the Bengali language against Urdu hegemony. It remains especially attentive to how Bengaliness was revitalized by the events of 1971. The book consequently provides a complex picture of nation formation through genocide, ethnic cleansing, the minoritization of nested communities, and a community's cultural sense of belonging.
Through a sustained analysis of social evolution on both sides of Bengal, this book demonstrates how a sense of affection transforms into a political struggle for freedom and nation formation. It will be of interest to researchers of Bengal, Bangladesh, and South Asia studies, as well as Asian History.

Analyzes the narrative agency of women who have come forward to break silences around wartime atrocities
In Troubling Testimonies, Annika Bjoerkdahl, Kristine Hoeglund, and Johanna Mannergren explore the power of women's voices in the aftermath of war. Demonstrating the importance of personal testimony, this book analyzes the narrative agency of women who have courageously come forward to shatter gendered silences around wartime atrocities and who have produced crucial new knowledge about women's experiences of war and its aftermath.
Employing a feminist lens, the authors highlight women's powerful testimonies from different post-war contexts; Bosnia and Herzegovina, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, and Iraq. They examine how these testimonies provide insight into complex forms of gender-based violence, such as wartime rapes in Rwanda and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the enslavement of young Yazidi women at the hands of ISIS, and the trauma of "secondary witnessing" in Sri Lanka. Most importantly, they examine how the act of testifying provides agency to the women themselves. The book develops an innovative theoretical framework for understanding narrative agency, offering scholars and practitioners a new tool for analyzing how testimony contributes to transitional justice, peace and transformation after war.
