Unbordering Migration Studies in the Caribbean and Latin America brings together scholars and artists across regions, generations, disciplines, and modes of expression to decenter the US-Mexico border as both a site and a concept. Calling for renewed attention to the spaces, identities, and conflicts that remain understudied and excluded from our hemispheric knowledge of forced movement, the volume reveals a wider diversity of migratory realities and considers race, ethnicity, and class beyond the hegemonic formations that eclipse non-US histories. Through multidisciplinary and geographically expansive essays that draw from history, social anthropology, environmental studies, feminist studies, and lived experience, the volume examines diverse migratory flows from Chile and Argentina in the South to Georgia and New York in the North. Individually and collectively, the essays remap migratory movements other than through the most studied South-to-North trajectories and remove the US and US-based racial formations from the center of analysis. By tracking East-West flows, intraregional mobilities, and changing conceptions of racial identity, Unbordering Migration Studies in the Caribbean and Latin America complicates the concepts of forced mobility and border crossing by highlighting alternative liminalities in sites of transit, destination, and return. Demanding engagement with the submerged histories of racism and the production of ethnoracial categories beyond the Black/white binary, the collection brings into focus identities, sites, and forces that have not yet occupied the foreground of global migration study.

Providing an in-depth exploration into the rivers of Habsburg Galicia (part of Austrian Poland) in the 19th century, this volume combines analysis of historical hydrographic data with modern GIS and remote sensing tools.

Considering geographical and historical factors, this book draws on both natural processes and human activities to analyse how river valleys function and highlight contemporary challenges relating to water resource management in the context of climate change. This collection is divided into four sections: Rivers, Flow, Control and Economy. The first section consists of studies on rivers in Galicia from geographical, borderland, legislative and literary perspectives. The second section deals with the floods that regularly affected Galicia in the 19th and 20th centuries, causing significant economic and social damage, providing pertinent parallels with current issues in the context of climate change. The third section analyses the actions of the state and autonomous authorities, aimed at controlling rivers through regulation, the construction of flood embankments and the drainage of wetlands. The final section includes studies on the role of rivers in the economic life.

This is a detailed and fascinating examination for scholars and students interested in Eastern European environmental history, hydrology, environmental management and water resource governance, and environmental economics.

Mongolian Healing: Knowledge, Transmission and Practice Across Inner Asia explores the rich and diverse medicinal healing practices by Mongolian communities across Mongolia, Inner Mongolia and Kalmykia.

This edited volume brings together scholars from various disciplines to examine knowledge systems and practises related to healing therapies, including nomadic healing, ritual practises including shamanic healing, water as a source for healing in the landscape and the art of Mongolian bonesetting. The second part of the book delves into the institutionalization of Mongolian medicine across Mongolia and Inner Mongolia, tracing its adaptation and its continuing presence in both urban and rural contexts, within contemporary healthcare systems, such as the hospital, laboratory and clinic. Through a Mongolian-oriented lens, this volume sheds light on the resilience and adaptability of Mongolian healing and medical traditions in the face of social, political and cultural transformations across history. Combining historical, anthropological and medical perspectives, it offers the first comprehensive account of how these practices have continued to thrive and adapt, bridging ancient knowledge with contemporary applications.

As a part of broader Asian medical traditions, this volume is an essential resource for scholars, practitioners and anyone interested in the dynamic interplay of ancient wisdom and ongoing innovation across Inner Asia.

Ethiopic Historiographical Texts contains selected papers, which were first presented at the International Workshop on Ethiopic Historiographical Texts, held at the University of Hamburg from June 29?30, 2023. The workshop was part of the DFG-funded project The Chronicle of King ?ar?a D?ng?l (r. 1563?1597). The contributions, which cover the period from the 14th to the 20th-century, examine royal chronicles, universal histories, a 19th-century Amharic chronicle, oral and written historiography, and archival materials. Edited by Solomon Gebreyes Beyene, the volume also explores the textual tradition of royal historiography, offers methodological reflections on the editing of such works, and examines the translation of historical texts in the late 19th-century under imperial patronage. The studies reassess earlier editions from the perspective of modern textual criticism, introduce newly identified manuscript evidence, and shed new light on the function, structure, and historical significance of Ethiopic historiography, while also considering its connections to liturgical literature and oral tradition.

Slavery and the Slave Trade in Ethiopian Studies offers a critical reappraisal of the history of slavery in Ethiopia ? an enduring yet often marginalized dimension of the country’s past ? by foregrounding the internal dynamics of slavery, the domestic slave trade, legal reforms, local interpretations and narratives of slavery and abolition, and the memory of enslavement. Drawing on new archival and ethnographic research, the contributions explore how slavery was embedded in Ethiopia’s social and political fabric and how its legacy continues to shape identities, social hierarchies and historical memory across generations. Spanning disciplinary boundaries, the volume combines historical depth with anthropological sensitivity to illuminate lived experiences, local institutions, and the shifting moral and political claims associated with bondage and freedom. With essays by both established and new scholars, this supplement to Aethiopica opens new avenues for understanding Ethiopia’s modern history. It is an essential resource for scholars of African history as well as readers interested in the long-term impact of slavery and the rise of contemporary Ethiopia.

As national governments and global institutions fail to address climate change, an increasing number of cities have committed to major sustainability and climate strategies. Why do some cities take bold action while others remain on the sidelines?

Christof Brandtner shows that city climate action is not simply a matter of political will: It is an organizational problem. Cities do not act alone. They are embedded within both a broad institutional superstructure of professional networks and peer cities as well as a deep organizational infrastructure of civil society organizations, public agencies, and socially responsible firms. This dual embeddedness shapes cities' capacity to plan, learn, lead, and scale sustainability solutions. Drawing on comparative research spanning fifteen years and thousands of cities around the world, Brandtner traces how environmental strategies, sustainability practices, and green building initiatives emerge, diffuse, and take hold. He uncovers the structural conditions that enable and inhibit meaningful climate action, revealing why it varies so widely across cities.

By combining lenses from urban theory and organizational sociology, Cities in Action sheds light on how cities navigate their social and institutional environments to meet the climate challenge. This book offers a novel perspective for scholars, policy makers, and practitioners seeking not just to explain but also to empower city action.

African Oral Literature: An Introduction guides us from the very beginnings of African oral traditions, through the whole range of theories and contexts, and right up to the modern technological age.

This comprehensive and engaging textbook covers the key concepts and methodologies behind the history, formation, delivery, and performance of oral literature. Folktales, proverbs, rhetoric, jokes, poetry, and theatre are explored in turn, before looking at compositional techniques, artistry, education, characterisation, and cosmology. The final part of the book investigates the interplay between oral traditions and technology such as social media in the twenty-first century. Drawing on traditional African pedagogy, the book weaves in African metaphors, rhetorical styles and performance modes, aiming for readers to imbibe African orality rhetoric page by page.

With key questions, exercises and further reading helping to guide readers at the end of each chapter, this book is the perfect introduction to the study of African oral literature.

It is widely thought that confessions from perpetrators of state violence promote accountability, reconciliation, and justice. Performing Public Confessions offers a challenge to this view through a critical examination of perpetrators' narratives, analyzing them as performances that shape public perceptions of state violence and responsibility. With a focus on Turkey, this book develops new insights into the performative aspects of confessions and what they reveal about the dominant social, moral, and political order.

Yesim Yaprak Yildiz explores public confessions by Turkish state actors implicated in atrocities against Kurds during the 1990s, showing that their accounts often function to obscure rather than clarify responsibility. Through close readings of perpetrators' rhetorical strategies, audience reactions, and media representations, she demonstrates that confessions are rarely straightforward admissions of guilt. Instead, they frequently perpetuate mechanisms of denial, silence, evasion, and disavowal, normalizing atrocities, reinforcing impunity, and masking the structural nature of state violence. Yildiz argues that perpetrators' narratives, when placed in their social contexts, illuminate the underlying moral and political frameworks that govern Turkish society. Bringing together theoretical reflections with rich analysis of case studies, this book uncovers the political and ethical limitations of public confessions.

This book examines some of the social dimensions of Indian society and the challenges therein. It explores various themes, including the rules and norms governing people's lives, the rhythm of village life, mythology and folk narratives, as well as social structures, institutions, and processes like caste, class, gender, religion, family formation, conjugality, dialect-language dichotomy, and the Indian diaspora.

Written in honour of Professor Hetukar Jha, renowned for his pioneering contributions to historical sociology and the integration of historical methods with sociological analysis, this collection presents theoretical and empirical articles examining India's complex social landscape. The contributors explore fundamental questions about Indian society's cultural dynamics, the interplay between tradition and modernity, evolving norms and values, and the manifestation of social cohesion and conflict across gender, caste, class, and religion. The book addresses transformations in key social institutions like marriage and language while representing India's spatial diversities and distinct regional cultural practices across its vast geographical expanse. The chapters take a long view on social transformations since India confronted Western "modernity" during British rule and the post-independence period up to the present era of globalisation and liberalisation.

The book will be of interest to research scholars and faculty in the fields of sociology, social anthropology, cultural studies, gender studies, Dalit studies, literature, South Asian studies, and political science.

During the years of the Pacific War and occupied Japan, more than ten thousand second-generation Japanese Americans (Nisei) served in the US armed forces and their campaigns in combat theaters and subsequently occupied enemy land in the Asia-Pacific region. By birthright US citizenship and acculturation, these young men and women of Japanese ancestry considered themselves to be American, but by blood ties and heritage culture they tended to be identified with their ancestral land of Japan. American-born residents of Japan were similarly recruited into the role of experts on the enemy according to presumptions about the special cultural capital they possessed due to their American upbringing. Brokering a Race War traces the complex experiences of Nisei soldiers and civilian linguists framed in a trans-imperial context. It examines the interactions between the United States and Japan as well as Japanese Americans' complicated relationships to white Americans and Japanese nationals. With a focus on Nisei's interstitial positions and brokering roles, it analyzes the changing meanings of race, citizenship, and culture among these groups and in transpacific power relations. In doing so, it reveals how these minority American soldiers came to appreciate the power of their birthright citizenship in the context of the total war against and the subsequent domination of the enemy who shared the same ancestry. Nisei's work in occupied Japan turned them into the frontline executors of US imperial power under the guise of spreading colorblind democracy to the Cold War Asia-Pacific and beyond. Based on new bilingual archival sources, Brokering a Race War offers a nuanced perspective on the oft-celebratory representations of minority US servicemen as an embodiment of America's disavowal of racism and a paragon of its multicultural democracy.

What if the most consequential alliance between the United States and Turkey was not signed-but screened? Beginning in 1930 and crystallizing during the Cold War, the two nations forged an alliance through film: American and Turkish institutions used educational films-short documentaries shown in schools, villages, theaters, and public spaces-not just to inform but to persuade. These films promoted cooperation, encouraged economic development, and modeled ideals of modern citizenship. Yet beneath their instructional surface, they also advanced a racialized vision of progress.

Film Diplomacy offers a powerful new account of how film shaped international relations and national identity. Drawing on previously unexamined and recently declassified archives in Turkey and the United States, Aysehan Juelide Etem demonstrates how both countries used educational films to align institutional agendas and geopolitical interests. The United States built on missionaries' earlier use of film programs while shifting from Christianization to modernization to promote free market capitalism and prevent the spread of communism. Turkish officials embraced film to promote a homogenous, secular, and Western-facing national identity that erased groups such as Armenians, Blacks, Greeks, Jews, and Kurds. In both contexts, whiteness operated as an invisible standard-shaping who belonged, who was excluded, and what counted as modern.

By tracing the transnational network of educational cinema, Etem uncovers how film functioned as infrastructure, circulating ideologies, organizing institutions, and training citizens. Moving beyond conventional accounts of propaganda and soft power, this book exposes how film was central to the making of modern Turkey and sheds new light on media's role in global politics.

This book explores the role played by museums and museum exhibitions in South Korea's cultural diplomacy and international projection of itself to the world.

Based on extensive archival research and fieldwork in cultural diplomatic institutions across South Korea, Britain, and the United States, this book charts the important role played by this form of cultural diplomacy. It considers specific travelling exhibitions including Masterpieces of Korean Art, which was on tour from 1957 to 1962, and 5000 Years of Korean Art, on tour from 1976 to 1985, and permanent and special exhibitions in the Korea Foundation Gallery in the British Museum and the Arts of Korea in the Metropolitan Museum of Art globally. This book goes on to examine the place of museums in South Korea's cultural diplomacy overall, explores the connections with South Korea's very successful development of its cultural sector, and concludes by assessing the effectiveness for South Korea of prioritising this form of soft power projection.

Analysing the developmental stages of South Korean cultural diplomacy in relation to international museum exhibitions, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of Korean history, culture and diplomacy as well as museums studies.

Just transition offers a way for fossil fuel-dependent economies to meet climate goals while ensuring that society as a whole - communities, workers, young people and marginalised groups - remains in the forefront of the conversation.

This book explores the political economy of just transition in East, West and Southern Africa in order to shine a light on contested epistemologies, policy configurations and case studies of practice at various scales. In the African context, just transition is particularly significant due to the continent's rich natural resources, including oil, gas and minerals, which have historically been exploited without adequate consideration for environmental sustainability and local communities' socio-economic rights. This book analyses how a just transition, in practice, should aim to rectify these historical injustices by promoting inclusive decision-making processes that involve the affected groups, workers and communities. Bringing together leading scholars in the field, who apply a climate justice analytical lens and just transition concepts, the chapters question the extent to which pathways towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 are achievable in Africa and whether this can be attained without undermining economic growth, jobs, livelihoods and lives.

Just Transition and Climate Justice in Sub-Saharan Africa will be an important read for policymakers and researchers in the fields of climate justice, environmental law, African and environmental studies.

A riveting current history of the Kurdish rebel PKK group

Aliza Marcus' new book tells the remarkable story of Kurdish revolution in the Middle East led by the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) - the rebel group whose insurgency in Turkey has impacted countries, conflicts, and Kurdish demands throughout the region.

Combining reportage and scholarship, Resurgence and Revolution explores the PKK's resurgence from the brink of defeat after the capture of its leader, Abdullah Ocalan, in 1999, and the brutal internal split that followed. The book tells the story of how Ocalan - operating from prison - reshaped the PKK to extend the group's influence beyond Turkey's borders, setting the stage for the group's dominance of northeastern Syria and the unlikely partnership between its allied forces and the U.S. in the fight against ISIS. Based on interviews with PKK fighters, their supporters, and opponents in Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Europe, Marcus traces the group's ability to maintain power in Turkey and extend its activities across borders, using PKK rebels' own voices to show why young people join and fight for the group and its affiliates in Syria and Iran.

For the more than 30 million Kurds in Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria-and for the leaders of these countries-the PKK is a force that cannot be ignored. Understanding the PKK and what drives its supporters is crucial for understanding Kurdish demands and potential solutions.

The fall of the Assad regime, and a new peace process between Turkey and the PKK has changed the dynamics for Kurdish demands and their control over territory in Syria. Resurgence and Revolution is a compelling and necessary read for understanding the impact of a resurgent PKK, the future of the Middle East, and the enduring struggle of the Kurds to rule themselves.

This book examines the foundations of Morocco's approach to green energy and environmental sustainability politics and, through the approach of autocracy research, offers a new perspective on the country's environmental turn during the reign of King Mohammed VI.

International accolades have rained on the Moroccan regime for its transition toward green energy and environmental sustainability politics. Green mega projects, such as the Noor Ouarzazate solar plants and Morocco's vast wind farms, contributed considerably to its reputation as a modern green kingdom. Within the nascent field of political ecology of the MENA region, the book examines the correlation between environmental sustainability politics and autocratic power. It proposes that the Moroccan regime strategically instrumentalizes this policy field to bolster regime resilience through legitimation strategies directed both at domestic and foreign audiences, as well as cooptive practices aimed at generating support among national as well as foreign elites. Inevitably, the book returns to the Western Sahara conflict and the role environmental sustainability politics play in Morocco's attempt at its annexation.

This book is perfect for undergraduates, postgraduates, and scholars alike. It speaks to a broad academic readership interested in modern Morocco and the Maghreb, as well as political and environmental studies.

This book explores the post-harem lives of Ottoman palace women who, unlike valide sultans, mothers of princes (sehzades), or imperial princesses (hanim sultans), lost their formal prominence after the death of the reigning sultan and have remained largely overlooked in imperial historiography. These women, often without surviving children or powerful networks, have been relegated to the background of dynastic narratives and treated as peripheral figures in mainstream history writing. Focusing on the consorts of Sultan Abduelhamid I (r. 1774-1789), this volume examines how these women sustained their social status, financial stability, and symbolic ties to the dynasty in the aftermath of palace life. Drawing upon a wide range of Ottoman archival materials, including rental agreements, vakfiye (waqf deeds), household expense records, and posthumous inventories, it reveals the economic strategies, spatial transitions, and charitable activities through which these women rebuilt a sense of belonging and dynastic visibility outside the palace walls. The book demonstrates that although these women did not enjoy fixed entitlements from the central treasury, they succeeded in securing stable and long-term income sources through investments in rental properties, esham bonds, and agricultural estates. Their engagement with the imperial revenue system, distinct from that of valide sultans and hanim sultans, shows an alternative but equally structured model of female economic agency. By tracing these overlooked trajectories, the book offers a fresh lens on gender, space, and power in the Ottoman Empire and fills a critical gap in the literature on dynastic wealth, representation, and imperial femininity. The book will be of great interest to students, researchers, and educators working in the fields of Ottoman history, gender studies, Middle Eastern economic history, cultural anthropology, and sociology.

In 2015, students at the University of Cape Town ignited a movement that would reverberate across the globe by demanding the removal of a statue of the British imperialist Cecil Rhodes. What began as a protest against a single monument became Rhodes Must Fall: a confrontation with colonial legacies at South African universities that inspired a movement at Oxford and beyond.

A. Kayum Ahmed tells the powerful story of Rhodes Must Fall, tracing the emergence of a new decolonial framework, Fallism, and its trajectory from Africa to empire. Drawing on archival research and interviews with activists, he interprets Fallism as both a critique of the university-rooted in patriarchy, white supremacy, and capitalism-and a broader decolonial theory. Ahmed reveals how students combined acts of defiance with deeper forms of intellectual insurgency to challenge Eurocentric curricula, linguistic hierarchies, and the silencing of Black epistemologies. In so doing, they transformed Black pain-the source of the uprising-into a collective struggle for Black liberation.

By following Fallism's journey, this book demonstrates how student movements create new vocabularies of resistance that transcend geographies of power. It underscores why universities remain battlegrounds in global struggles, from conflicts over statues and curricula to pro-Palestinian protests. Both a history of a movement and a theoretical intervention, Theorizing Fallism illuminates the enduring influence of students to challenge entrenched structures of knowledge and power.

This book examines ten of the most common myths surrounding the Korean Wave in relation to its histories, theories, and practices.

Dal Yong Jin explores several major misconceptions that are frequently encountered in relation to Hallyu, with each chapter examining one major myth. Through discussion of these myths, this book offers a foundation for students, scholars, and global Hallyu fans to reflect more critically on these issues. The book extends the empirical and theoretical boundaries of the existing studies of Hallyu by critically investigating its global circulation and reception across different geo-cultural locations, and theoretically develops an evidence-based, critical framework for understanding the complexities and contradictions of cultural globalization, rather than perpetuating a mythologized perception of the Hallyu phenomenon. The discussions in this book comprehensively and historically shed light on the current debates on the role of Hallyu in the global cultural sphere-from political, economic, and cultural studies perspectives-and make a significant theoretical and empirical contribution to media studies, Asian studies, and globalization studies.

This book will be highly appealing to students, scholars, as well as general readers who are interested in the Korean Wave, media globalization, and contemporary digital culture.

The Yukpa from Sokorhpa in Northwestern Colombia converse with animals, the dead, and deities. Moving beyond influential theories on more-than-human relations from Amazonian Anthropology, Anne Goletz introduces the concept of ?common ground? to examine a range of distinct communicative strategies. Drawing on detailed analysis of communication situations and narratives, she provides insights into present-day social dynamics in the Serrania del Perija highlands, and relates the Cariban-speaking Yukpa to the emerging socio-cosmological framework of the Isthmo-Colombian Area. This ethnography thus offers an insightful conceptual perspective on communication beyond the human.
