Centering Indigenous Standpoints through Mediated Communication explores how different forms of Indigenous media, including social media, are significant advocatory and educational methods of resistance against repeated attempts at genocide, erasure, misrepresentation, vilification, forced assimilation, and stereotyping perpetuated by colonial systems.

Ben R. LaPoe II and Victoria L. LaPoe argue that, unlike mainstream media operating under settler principles, Indigenous media privileges Indigenous life experiences, emphasizes Indigenous contexts, honors Indigenous social customs, amplifies Indigenous voices, and incorporates Indigenous worldviews. The book introduces readers to these intersections of Indigenous knowledge and explores the ways in which narrative advocacy empowers and benefits those who communicate their own voices and experiences.

Through a multi-method approach and analyses of Indigenous social media posts through the framework of Indigenous Standpoint Theory (IST), the authors identify Indigenous advocacy renovation efforts on mainstream social media platforms and demonstrate how different platforms can impact communities and act as a form of source sovereignty. Ultimately, the results of these analyses position IST as a key approach to supporting the decolonization of knowledge and advocacy in media spaces.

This book deals with the issue of integrating science into democratic decision-making, emphasizing the need to balance the epistemic qualities of science with democratic values. The central question is not whether to rely on science, but how to do so effectively without undermining democratic principles or scientific integrity. The work criticizes the traditional Weberian division of labor, which separates the roles of scientists and the public, and argues that this division often overlooks the complexities of modern science and democratic decision-making. It highlights the challenges of maintaining both the truth-seeking function of science and the political function of democracy. In turn, the book identifies the epistemic dependence of the public on scientific experts and explores how this dependence interacts with the ideal of autonomy. A significant focus is placed on the problem of specialization in modern science. The book argues that the cognitive division of labor, while necessary for scientific advancement, creates barriers to public understanding and engagement. This specialization complicates the transmission of scientific knowledge and poses a challenge to maintaining democratic oversight and participation. Three main models of integrating science into democracy are examined: the trust model, the epistemic authority model, and the democratic authority model. While each model offers valuable insights, none of them appears to be sufficient on its own. Therefore, the author proposes a synthesized approach that incorporates trust, epistemic rigor, and democratic principles. By addressing the interrelated challenges of specialization, epistemic dependence, and democratic legitimacy, this book presents a comprehensive normative framework for integrating science into democratic decision-making.

Chris Shilling and Philip A. Mellor argue that recent developments in social character are key to explaining the sectarian tribalism that has afflicted American and European societies in recent decades.
Building upon one of the most influential books of the twentieth century, David Riesman's The Lonely Crowd, the authors explore the social and economic conditions that have resulted in a 'thinning' of empathy and mutual identification, the significance of inequalities and social movements in stimulating the emergence of identity-directedness, and the opportunity-directed exploitation of dynamic social change, risk and uncertainty. Reflecting on an era marked by intensifying conflict, Social Character, Tribalism and Society asks whether it is possible that a 'saving remnant' could emerge from the characterological struggle that is fraying the social fabric and threatening to destabilise social order.

A fascinating examination of how World War I impacted the Chicago White Sox and led to the infamous Black Sox scandal.

All sixteen clubs in Major League Baseball faced challenges and obstacles during World War I, the Chicago White Sox more so than many. Though owner Charles Comiskey supported military preparedness throughout the American League in 1917, the team was soon losing players to the war effort and floundering, despite winning the first wartime World Series that fall.

In Battlefields, Jim Leeke provides the first detailed examination of how World War I affected the team and ultimately led to the Black Sox scandal of 1919. Leeke recounts how, during the 1918 season, stars suddenly abandoned their team for jobs and spots on company baseball teams in essential industries, while others enlisted and still more were lost to the military draft. During the war-shortened season, Comiskey and the White Sox struggled to keep a competitive team on the field, fans in the seats, and black ink in the account books amid soaring prices and wartime taxes.

The White Sox emerged from the war in good shape, ready again to capture the first postwar American League pennant. But, as Leeke deftly shows, the problems and divisions that simmered during 1918 ultimately led to the infamous "Black Sox" scandal and the club's fall into disgrace. Battlefields charts the Chicago club's dual rise and fall in captivating detail.

This book analyzes how everyday storytelling operates as a subtle yet powerful mode of influence, shaping identity, belief systems, and leadership across diverse cultural contexts.
Bridging literary theory, cultural studies, and leadership practice, it offers an interdisciplinary examination of myths, fairy tales, parables, and trickster narratives to uncover the mechanisms through which stories embed and transmit power. With critical insight into the ideological and affective force of narrative, James E. Siburt reveals how even the most ordinary stories sustain social norms, seed collective values, and mirror the deep structures of human desire and meaning-making.

The social dimension of human life shapes or constitutes what perception is for us, that is, how we perceptually relate to the world.

A Social Enactive Theory of Perception offers a unified study, in the enactivist tradition, of perception and its connection to sociality. Alejandro Arango looks for perception in the middle of everyday life and finds that perception is at home in perceptual practices, socially structured ways of relating to the perceptible world. These practices are attuned to different dimensions of human life, such as the cultural worlds of customs that play a role in our lives' unique character, aesthetic experience, interpersonal relations, and even social interactions that can be labeled welcoming and accepting, or racist and xenophobic. The book argues that although the perceiver is situated in relation to the world in many ways that influence perception, this does not entail a radical subjectivism. Rather, it shows that the world appears to perceivers in different ways or aspects since we relate differently to the same world The framework of perceptual practices can also be applied to our understanding of others, and the book argues that we understand others in part through perception. This framework allows us to understand others as bearers or social identities.

Bringing social philosophy together with philosophy of mind and taking the next step in enactivist philosophy, this theory accounts for the fundamental role of perception in the social aspect of everyday experience. With influences from Wittgensteinian pragmatism, phenomenology, and analytic philosophy of perception, as well as engagement with social psychology, social cognition studies, and work in neuroscience, the book synthesizes different layers at work in perception, paying important attention to the non-visual senses.

This book explores the challenges and opportunities that arise when high-tech innovation crosses cultural boundaries-and how it can be thoughtfully adapted before reaching the end user. Drawing on a real-world case of a European Virtual Reality (VR) training system prepared for deployment in Malaysia's aerospace sector, this book investigates the cultural and cognitive translations necessary to ensure any design tool's success in a new context. Rather than documenting failure, it offers a blueprint for preventing it-by listening, adapting, and designing with local realities in mind. Drawing from ethnographic research, interviews, and human-centered design principles, this book explores the concept of anthropotechnology, aligning technology with local learning habits, social dynamics, and cultural expectations. It introduces the concept of the Anthropotechnological Islet, a bridging structure that enables imported systems to fit meaningfully into different environments before they are operationalized. The Islet is not a compromise between systems but a generative space for innovation that fosters cross-cultural adaptation and learning. This book is both a research monograph and a design manifesto. It tells the story of how a VR tool was reshaped-not just through technical refinement, but through cultural insight, institutional collaboration, and cognitive empathy. It offers practical guidance for those working in training, design, and technology transfer, especially in transnational or cross-cultural settings. In an increasingly globalized world, this book invites readers to rethink how we design for difference-early, intentionally, and with respect for local ways of knowing and learning.

A vital guide to centering community knowledge to generate effective solutions to inequality

When organizations take on social problems, from school reform to conservation to healthcare disparities, community members are sometimes "invited to the table" to share their insights. But if the table has already been set with institutional assumptions about the issue at hand, the solutions that emerge often have little to do with the people and places they are meant to help. When this is the case, inclusion can only go so far: as Dr. Brittany Lewis argues, it's time to build a new table.

Drawing on her work as a community researcher and nonprofit consultant, Dr. Lewis developed the Equity in Action (EIA) model as a framework for closing the gaps between communities, researchers, and institutions. By centering the knowledge of the community members who ostensibly benefit from the work of various organizations, EIA makes research questions more relevant and the research process more targeted, getting at the roots of social inequality to find sustainable, impactful solutions. In Building a New Table, Dr. Lewis guides readers through the steps of EIA: assessing the landscape, building the community action council, co-developing a research approach, data collection, community review, and identifying solutions. Along the way, she highlights the values imbued in each step and the skills needed for success as well as how the model can be adapted for different organizations.

Practical and hands-on, Building a New Table explores each phase of the Equity in Action model through case studies featuring commentary from organizational leaders and staff who have used it to reshape their engagement with the communities they serve. Demonstrating how to ground solutions in lessons from lived experience, this book teaches how authentic community engagement and community-driven research creates reciprocal, generative relationships that can enact real, systemic change.

Fan Translations introduces students and scholars in media studies, modern languages and related disciplines to the concept and practices of fan translation.

Beginning with an overview of the research on fan translation from both media and translation studies, this book focuses on issues such as the tension between creative readings and commercial exploitation, the role of translation in popular culture, the changing media landscape and the balance between translation as a form of self-expression and as a service to the community.

Fan Translations resists the assumption of a Global North subject in existing scholarship, and instead explores the connections between fandom and translation in the Global South where access to primary texts and official merchandise is often mediated through both official and fan translations as well as through unofficial products. Through the utilization of case studies, Evans and Guo explore different perspectives on fandom, translation and their intersections. These case studies touch on imperative topics in fan culture, such as fan translation in queer communities and media as a method of community building and the interrelation between fan and professional translation, leading to ongoing changes in media distribution.

This book develops a detailed account of the emergence of world histories from the discontinuous, stochastic micro dynamics of Tychistic Bohmian Mechanics (TBM). TBM is a non-relativistic quantum theory. It results from excising the guiding equation from standard Bohmian Mechanics (BM) and reinterpreting the quantum equilibrium hypothesis as a stochastic guidance law for the random actualization of configurations of Bohmian particles. The author introduces worlds, and world histories, as key concepts in providing a link between TBM's micro dynamics and macroscopic phenomena. Worlds, other than Barbourian time capsules, are coarse-grained regions in phase- or configuration space, defined as sets of possible micro states satisfying a relation of sufficient similarity from a macroscopic perspective, with respect to a given micro state. Hence, worlds may overlap. By providing a detailed explanation of how overlapping worlds in TBM form world histories, an account of how macroscopically distinct worlds are linked to each other is provided. Thus, the problem of temporal solipsism is resolved in a way that is compatible with a more than minimal psychophysical parallelism. This book is of interest to researchers and students in the philosophy of science, in particular the philosophy of physics, but also to metaphysicians. It is especially valuable to scholars working on the issue of interpreting Quantum Mechanics and exploring the field of possible interpretations and alternative theories.

This book explores how young Muslims in the Anglophone West navigate faith, identity, and belonging through digital media. Drawing on 122 in-depth interviews across Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, it shows how online spaces shape religious, social, and political life. Muslim youth use social platforms to share modest fashion practices, build friendships, join virtual Qur'an circles, and engage in hashtag activism-while also confronting Islamophobia, surveillance, disinformation, and algorithmic bias. Blending insights from digital religion, media studies, political communication, and sociology, the book applies concepts such as networked publics, participatory culture, and third space to examine authority, visibility, and resistance. It reveals how young Muslims create hybrid identities, practice digital citizenship, and foster resilience, offering a fresh perspective on how technology, culture, and religion intersect. This timely study speaks to readers interested in youth culture, religion, digital politics, and twenty-first-century social change.

Media discourses play a powerful role in shaping public understanding of inequality-yet they often obscure, distort, or individualize its causes.
Critical Explorations of Media and Inequality examines how mainstream media systems reproduce and legitimize unequal social structures by marginalizing, sensationalizing, or blaming those most affected. Bringing together leading and emerging scholars, this edited collection explores the persistent gaps, tensions, and ideological forces at work in media representations of class, poverty, homelessness, welfare, and immigration across diverse global contexts. Organized around the themes of changing media work practices, authoritative voices, representations, and implications, the chapters interrogate how neoliberalism and shifting journalistic norms continue to shape-and limit-the public conversation on inequality. Through rich empirical analysis and interdisciplinary insight, this volume offers a timely intervention into the politics of media framing and the structural silences that sustain social injustice.

Western democracies are suffering from populism, verging on fascism, because of the erosion of truth. This book argues that truth can grow out of citizenship education in how science really works, allied with an explicit culture of truth among politicians.

While science operates outside the timescale of politics, it can serve as an object lesson for political decision-making under democracy. Using the examples of disease prevention and climate change, Harry Collins and Robert Evans show why citizens would be wise to trust the substantive findings of science as well as its moral culture. They also present demarcation criteria for distinguishing between real expertise and populist claims and also for distinguishing between real science and contenders for that title that do not deserve the moniker. For example, they argue that the discipline of economics, as currently constituted, does not deserve the title of science because it does not seek correspondence truth but instead works in a circular way within its own models without concern for how those models with their assumptions actually map onto reality.

The solution the authors propose - veritocracy, a democracy with truth at its heart - is incompatible with either left or right totalitarianism and with meaningless slogans. To establish veritocracies we must start with a new approach to science education.

This book explores the question to what extent science is Western, whether in origin or by character. It aims to contribute to the debate regarding the relative status of local forms of knowledge (such as those found among indigenous peoples) and modern science. Advocates of local ways of knowing often contrast them with what they call Western science. Their opponents, on the other hand, insist that modern science is not merely Western, but universal. But there has been little discussion about what it would mean for science to be Western, let alone what evidence there is in support of the idea. The present book fills this gap, offering a middle path between what have become polarized views.

Is Science Western? is essential reading for scholars, researchers and advanced students of the philosophy of science and of epistemology. It is also ideal for scholars of indigenous knowledge within postcolonial studies.

In this edited volume, contributors explore the various threats-both security- and (dis)information-related-that are present within the European digital environment, along with the subsequent regulations imposed across the region in response to these threats.
Due to the fluctuating evolution of EU-wide and national regulatory approaches to the digital sphere and the differences in each approach, it is crucial to examine the current state of that regulation on both levels to better understand each approach and its consequences. Thus, contributors analyze these phenomena from both European and national perspectives to identify best and unsuccessful practices.

The volume is divided into four sections - first, it maps threats and trust around disinformation in the European digital environment. The second part goes on to identify examples of successful approaches to these threats and to combatting disinformation, while the third section focuses on regulations that have been put in place by specific countries or the EU as a whole. Finally, the fourth section of the book identifies current and ongoing challenges relating to disinformation in the European digital environment, providing practical suggestions and directions for future research in this area.

An expansive treatise on the power relations that govern our movement

The Citizen and the Vagabond develops a theoretical approach to the study of mobility and its relationship to the production, maintenance, and transformation of social and cultural hierarchies. Expanding upon his foundational work on the subject, Tim Cresswell examines human movement from around the globe to better understand the various forms of inequality and injustice that shape our lives.

Establishing a framework for movement in terms of rhythm, speed, routes, and friction, Cresswell extends these themes to address the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, exploring what this turbulent period reveals to us about the politics of mobility. He demonstrates that while flexibility and ease of movement are typically considered markers of personal freedom, increased mobility brings with it new modes of control and surveillance. As he investigates the hierarchies and embodied experiences that emerge amid these tensions, Cresswell employs two figures: the citizen, whose mobility within and across borders is expected and accepted, and the vagabond, whose perpetual mobility is deemed suspect and in need of ordering.

In conversation with the work of theorists such as Mimi Sheller, Zygmunt Bauman, Paul Virilio, Henri Lefebvre, Ivan Illich, and Anna Tsing, Cresswell reaches beyond geography to incorporate insights from the humanities and social sciences. An interdisciplinary intervention into the study of mobility and citizenship, The Citizen and the Vagabond provides a new set of coordinates from which to grasp the shifting dynamics of movement and power.

A realist, particle-based view of quantum theory-where the wavefunction no longer plays a central role-offers a clear, commonsense alternative to dominant metaphysical views.

This book explores the metaphysics of quantum theory through a lens of scientific realism-the belief that successful scientific theories describe reality. It critically evaluates various interpretations, including structural realism, wave function realism, and the many-worlds view, highlighting their limitations. Valia Allori proposes a "spatiotemporal foundational ontology" approach, grounded in particles as fundamental entities evolving in three-dimensional space and time, following uniform, symmetric laws. This view is exemplified by Bohmian mechanics (pilot-wave theory), offering a constructive, commonsensical explanation of quantum phenomena. The wave function, in this framework, is not a physical object but plays a functional, law-like role in explaining interactions. Further, the book advances a radical thesis: fundamental particles lack intrinsic properties like mass or charge and are instead "bare" objects distinguished only by the laws governing them. This thesis allows a middle path between traditional object-based metaphysics and eliminative structuralism. Ultimately, the author argues that had physics developed more rationally, instead of following a historical path shaped by contingent choices, the pilot-wave theory might have been the dominant interpretation, minimizing the proliferation of speculative alternatives.

This book defends property hyperintensionalism: a view of property individuation according to which properties can be distinct even if they are necessarily had by the exact same entities. J. J. Snodgrass brings order to the debate over property individuation between property hyperintensionalism and property intensionalism, a rival view according to which such properties are identical, and argues that property hyperintensionalism earns its place in metaphysics.

After giving some background on the concepts of a property and a criterion of identity, Snodgrass motivates property hyperintensionalism first by cataloguing a wide range of intuitively distinct properties that are necessarily had by the exact same entities, and second by attending to the different relations these properties bear to one another, both of which bring out the limits of property intensionalism. The discussion that follows takes up numerous objections against property hyperintensionalism. These include claims that the view relies on properties that are distinct but not necessarily had by the exact same entities; that it confuses a single property with some linguistic and/or mental representational surrogate of that property; that it allows properties to stand in necessary connections; and that it sits uneasily with theoretical and methodological evaluative criteria, such as parsimony and overfitting. In the final chapter, Snodgrass turns to the objection that property hyperintensionalism pays insufficient attention to the hyperintension of a property, and in response proposes a hyperintensional theory of property individuation. He also provides results the theory delivers about the individuation of properties and applies the theory to similarity judgements, the sparse/abundant and qualitative/non-qualitative distinctions, as well as to the concept of naturalness.

This book will be of interest to advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and professional philosophers working on the topic of hyperintensionality in metaphysics, philosophy of language, and philosophical logic.

This open access collection gathers thinkers, media practitioners, scholars, and artists to bring attention to how our relational selves, lives, and lifeworlds emerge within a range of digital platforms, media environments, creative media practices, and performances to probe what it means to become subjective by evolving in and with a world of relational technologies.

As biometric artificial intelligence, datafication procedures and algorithms increasingly saturate and reconfigure human and more-than-human realms, technologies, and selves co-evolve in deepest relationality. Nearly every form of existence has today become subject to computational harvesting and utilization. This renders our relations with technologies-those we actively compose and those that are forced upon us-ever more complex and inconceivably entwined.

Topics covered in this collection include: face monitoring and modelling practices, quantified applications, writing techniques, biometric identifications of age and health, AI informed decision making, biohacking, voice recognition, social media, and algorithmic cultures of datafication. The overarching motivation is to generate new forms of understanding, but also "counter-measures" for negotiating this relational condition existentially, socially, and artistically. Thus, offering a unique contribution to the debates on data selves, Relational Technologies provides manifold possibilities for a co-existentialist understanding of technological developments of datafication and biometrics. This way the volume brings posthumanist critique into conversation with the young field of existential media studies, in search of new inflection points of change and transformation through new modes of knowing, reflecting, and crafting media futures of relationality.

Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring Satire is essentially a form of criticism that points out faults and failings in others. Its targets might be lapses in taste, moral failings, or political corruption. Its methods include irony, parody, grotesque distortion, bathos, and obscenity, and the intentions of satirists have been the subject of much debate. Critics have argued about whether satirists aim to reform their targets, inform their audiences about hidden truths, or vent their spleen against those they despise. This Very Short Introduction describes satire as a complex cultural phenomena, appearing in many forms and different national traditions across the ages. It suggests that satire is an awkward relative of both tragedy and comedy. Like tragedy, it presents a dark view of mankind, but it reaches into the grubby depths rather than aspiring to the sublime. It provokes laughter like comedy, but it is the laugher of derision and scorn rather than comic acceptance. Hawley addresses these questions and others by examining the genre in its different forms and suggesting that the aims and effects of satire have varied in different eras and cultures as she traces its history from its origins in Greek and Roman drama and verse up to the present. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. The Irvine Ranch: Fulfilling the Vision, 1977-2025 continues the story of the planning and development of the Irvine Ranch under a partnership of high-powered businessmen to the single ownership of Donald Bren.

The Irvine Ranch transformed from an agricultural empire into the most successful New Town in the United States in less than two generations. Since 1977, some of the most innovative and valuable master-planned residential, commercial, and retail developments have occurred on the Irvine Ranch in the cities of Irvine, Newport Beach, Tustin, and Orange. This book details the Irvine Company's success in planning and its strategic handling of major challenges, including infrastructure needs and responses to anti-growth sentiment and litigation. From the start of comprehensive planning of the Irvine Ranch in 1960 to today, the development is regarded by planning and real estate experts as the most significant and valuable master-planned community in the nation.

Successive generations of urban planners and real estate developers will look to the Irvine Ranch-shaped by Bren's long-term leadership-as a model of successful large-scale community development.

Marriage and fertility rates are falling around the world, upending social security planning and threatening economic growth. In Love Apocalypse, anthropologists present their insights into this society-altering demographic shift, drawing on their research into the ways love, romantic relationships, and family are being transformed by cultural, social, and economic forces. Each case study in this volume examines a unique cultural context from either Asia (China, South Korea, Japan, India), Europe (Germany, Lithuania), or Latin America (Cuba, Peru), grounded in years of ethnographic research into how communities' experiences and perceptions of love, marriage, and family are changing in response to economic precarity, shifting gender relations, status competition, and diversifying cultural norms. It is increasingly clear that marriage and two-parent nuclear families will not be the universal norm of the twenty-first century even if this arrangement was largely idealized a mere generation ago. However, this does not mean the end of love, intimacy, or family but rather its transformation and the emergence of new intimate relationships and adaptations to the challenges and opportunities of life in the twenty-first century.

For built environment professionals, delivering socially impactful projects is more crucial and challenging than ever. This step-by-step guide provides an innovative approach to stakeholder engagement, empowering project teams to create meaningful social value through the stakeholder engagement process and build better projects.

Socially Successful Projects in the built environment will help the reader understand the theory behind a reframed approach to stakeholder engagement using a social value lens. The authors argue that projects in the built environment need to be technically feasible, financially viable, and socially successful. Project managers need to focus on all three elements, which are summarised as 'concrete, cash, and connection'. Failing to meet that third criterion can lead to pushback, protests, delays, and potentially unsuccessful projects. This book focuses on the third of those elements (the social dimension) and provides a step-by-step guide to how a project can be socially successful. In summary, this is about delivering better projects for both the stakeholders and the project teams.

In Socially Successful Projects in the built environment, the authors unravel the complex relationship between social value and stakeholder engagement and reveal a transformative practical theory for effective collaboration and facilitation. Along the way, they address key issues such as design philosophy, scenario development, stakeholder analysis, optioneering, and project learning, and provide practical advice on how to use these methods within real-world projects. This book is essential reading for all built environment stakeholders and teams working to deliver better projects.
