This book explores the Situationist International's paradoxical relationship with cinema from 1957 to 1972. The SI was a postwar avant-garde that condemned representation's erosion of social life. Yet its membership cared deeply for cinema, the epitome of capitalist representation for that era. How did the Situationists reconcile their interest in filmic social space with their hopes to revolutionize social space in city streets?
The Situationist International and the Social Space of Film: With and Against Cinema traces the SI's attempts throughout the 1960s to work with cinema's associative power and against its passivity. It follows this project from early encounters with Lettrist cinema to 1968 and beyond, all the while contextualizing Situationist theory with the work of friends and foes like Henri Lefebvre, Marcel Marien, Alain Resnais, Jean-Luc Godard and Agnes Varda.
Meticulously researched and thoughtfully argued, Stob's book offers timely lessons for today's media artists, scholars and activists. Cinema is revealed to be a vital Situationist paradigm for social togetherness as well as for social separation.

This book focuses on the importance of place and the multifaceted process of placemaking to the creation of durable and meaningful urban environments. It features international thought leaders, judiciously curated and convened across disciplines, cultures, and viewpoints to debate their perspectives on the merits and challenges of place and placemaking. Chapters investigate the tenor, timeliness, and tensions of place, and how we envision, co-create, and communicate place with colleagues, citizens, and critics. Stemming from the first Rudy Bruner Debate on Urban Excellence, chapter authors expressly present their experience, insights, and questions on place and placemaking, inspiring critical reflection and action in the world that surrounds us. This book will be of interest to students and practitioners in urban planning, urban design, real estate, architecture, and landscape architecture and to urban advocates and civic leaders.

Women, Fertility, and North American Archaeology brings together more than three decades of Cheryl Claassen's groundbreaking work on gender and archaeology. Featuring articles originally published between 1989 and 2023, the volume makes available the full scope of Claassen's work related to Archaic and Woodland-era women in the Southeastern United States, women working as archaeologists, and the development of a gendered archaeological inquiry.
Organized in two parts, the collection begins with essays on the emergence of gender as an archaeological category and on the role of women in a field once dominated by masculine perspectives. The second half of the volume turns to archaeological explorations of women in prehistory, including women's labor, fertility, and ritual practices, and how these facets of life were linked to and influenced by the landscapes and resources of the time.
With introductions to each section that discuss the genesis of ideas and provide additional context for each paper, Claassen situates her work within the broader history of the discipline. Illustrated with thirty images and maps and including previously difficult-to-find articles, this volume is an essential resource for archaeologists, students of anthropology, and scholars of gender and women's studies.

Narratives of Success and Resilience of Students from Refugee Backgrounds in U.S. Schools offers educators a transformative perspective on teaching students from refugee backgrounds. Through personal narratives, this book highlights the resilience, strength, and wisdom that refugee students carry with them-alongside the rich linguistic and cultural wealth they contribute to schools. Drawing from the frameworks of community cultural wealth and ethics of care, the book challenges deficit perspectives and calls for an education system that values students not for how well they assimilate, but for the global perspectives and knowledge they bring. Centering student voice throughout, this is both a scholarly contribution and a call to action for more just and inclusive educational practices. It provides current and future educators with a deep understanding of refugee students' experiences, from not only language barriers to trauma but also strengths and experiences, ultimately offering teaching strategies for creating inclusive, supportive learning environments.

This innovative book reconsiders the meaning of journalistic impact and proposes a new storytelling approach to achieve it.
Catalyst Journalism proposes aligning investigative journalism, with its long tradition of reform-minded reporting, with solutions journalism, an evidence-driven approach to examining effective responses to social problems. The book describes how investigative journalism and solutions journalism-approaches that at first glance might seem opposites-can work in concert to drive accountability reporting and expand the scope of journalistic impact. In doing so, Catalyst Journalism casts a new light on long-held assumptions about news values, objectivity, journalistic ethics and the very nature of investigative journalism itself. This book also provides a clear-eyed analysis that demystifies the emerging practice of solutions journalism. Case studies from The Boston Globe, The Christian Science Monitor, and the The Seattle Times demonstrate the power of pairing solutions-focused reporting with investigative methods.
Catalyst Journalism is a valuable text for students of investigative and solutions journalism, as well as for professional journalists interested in emerging storytelling methods.

Excavations at the Austin Friary, Hull, Yorkshire, 1994 and 1999, Part 2, details the excavations of the Austin Friary in Hull, a house founded in 1316/17 and surrendered to the Crown in 1539.
This volume concentrates on the material culture recovered during the excavations. The site yielded a nationally significant group of medieval coffins, all but one of which were made of imported Baltic oak - the largest assemblage of such timber from the whole of Britain. There were also significant collections of well preserved textiles, leather, wood and dress-accessories. In addition, some of the burials were accompanied by carefully placed wooden rods, an under-reported burial tradition which can be found on either side of the North Sea. Many of the monastic buildings were reused after the Dissolution in 1539; partly in consequence, a large assemblage of masonry and ceramic building materials was recovered from this site. There were also significant collections of floor tiles (both plain and decorated), and window-glass, whilst other finds include rare finds of musical instrument components. Cumulatively, this volume sheds significant light upon a whole range of aspects of life and death within this northern religious house for a period of over two centuries, as well as offering yet more valuable evidence about Hull's extensive medieval trading-links, as one of England's leading ports.
This book is for researchers and archaeologists interested in the archaeology of medieval Britain as well as the role of Christianity in the Middle Ages.

Analyzing the innovative and popular uses of digital media technologies across many African countries, African Digital Cultures reveals how digitization, through its inherent computational and epistemological logics, is deeply embedded in the daily lives of millions of people, producing new structures of feeling and new possibilities for political participation, cultural expression, and creative agency.
This book grapples with the affective elements of mediatized social relations and consciousness, as platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and TikTok increasingly inform the construction of diverse kinds of publics-from the religious and political to the sexual and the literary. Focusing on the creative and disruptive uses of social media platforms, financial technologies, digital infrastructures, and artificial intelligence, this collection brings together scholars whose work challenges the notion of Africa as a place of technological lack, underscoring the rich histories and contributions of the continent to global digital media.
This interdisciplinary volume offers an essential and decolonizing understanding of digital media cultures and histories from an African perspective.

This monograph draws on empirical research results to explore how personal psychological factors like perceived stress, rejection sensitivity, and attachment styles contribute to social network service (SNS) addiction.
The author delves into the psychological mechanisms underlying SNS addiction, with a specific focus on young adults in contemporary society. She presents results from research on young people in Henan Province, China. By constructing a mediation model grounded in stress-sensitivity theory, reinforcement sensitivity theory, and attachment theory, the book uncovers how stress and psychological vulnerabilities interact to intensify reliance on digital platforms. The book integrates theoretical frameworks with recent empirical data to offer a comprehensive understanding of SNS addiction. It provides valuable insights for scholars and mental health professionals, emphasizing the mediating role of perceived stress and the heightened vulnerability of individuals with insecure attachment styles. Beyond theoretical contributions, the book offers practical strategies for educators, counsellors, and parents to address the growing challenges of SNS addiction among young adults. Its findings are timely, addressing a global issue exacerbated by recent social and economic upheavals. Its detailed analysis of psychological theories and quantitative methods makes it particularly valuable for those investigating the intersection of mental health and digital behaviour.
The book caters to an academic audience, including researchers, graduate students, and scholars in psychology, sociology, and digital media studies. Mental health practitioners and educators will also benefit from its evidence-based strategies. It is an indispensable resource for anyone seeking to understand or mitigate the psychological impact of SNS addiction on contemporary youth.

This collection explores the intersection of magic, reproduction, and horror in contemporary culture, examining how these elements reflect and critique societal anxieties during a time of unprecedented challenges to reproductive rights, scientific advances in reproduction, and rising magical thinking in our post-pandemic world.
Addressing horror in popular culture, this volume investigates how bodies become sites of cultural contradiction, where ancient myths meet modern technologies, and where social power structures manifest through narratives of purity, contamination, and transformation. This book brings together diverse perspectives from biology, film studies, literary history, ethnology, and queer studies. Key features include analysis of horror across global cultures, from Anglo-American film to Indian cinema and East Asian popular culture; exploration of reproductive themes in young adult literature and superhero narratives; and examination of how magical thinking intersects with modern reproductive technologies. This volume's creative structure, organised around temporal categories, allows readers to trace the importance of these themes from ancient stories through to contemporary issues and future speculations, while highlighting the persistent role of magic in shaping cultural narratives about reproduction.
This collection will appeal to scholars and graduate students interested in gender studies, film studies, cultural studies, and reproductive rights, as well as researchers working at the intersection of horror and society. It offers valuable insights for academics studying contemporary media, feminist theory, and the sociology of reproduction, while remaining accessible to informed readers seeking to understand how horror reflects and shapes cultural attitudes toward reproduction. The interdisciplinary approach makes it particularly valuable for those seeking to understand the complex relationships between magical thinking, reproductive rights, and popular culture in our rapidly changing world.

Existential-Psychoanalytic Reflections on Belief and Being offers an exploration of faith not as dogma but as a psychoanalytic and existential phenomenon.
Drawing from existential phenomenology, psychoanalysis, and theology, Brent Potter examines how individuals navigate despair, loss, and meaning-making today. This book engages deeply with thinkers such as Freud, Jung, Heidegger, Winnicott, Bion, Eigen, Tolkien, and Michael Heiser, weaving together clinical insights and philosophical reflections to offer an integrative approach to faith and human existence. This book argues that faith is not a belief in propositions but a form of lived trust. It is an ethical and emotional disposition that endures in the face of ambiguity. This book also explores the meaning and experience of faith in a world marked by psychological fragmentation, cultural upheaval, and existential crises.
Existential-Psychoanalytic Reflections on Belief and Being will be of great interest to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and pastoral counselors, as well as academics and scholars of theology, philosophy, existential psychology, and spirituality. It will also be relevant to anyone seeking to understand the complex interplay between psychological depth and spiritual meaning in the contemporary world.

Combining history, theory, case studies and practical guidance, this book offers a critical introduction to interdisciplinary production in the arts and cultural industries.
Taking a production studies approach, the book examines how arts and cultural organisations produce and present new work that integrate knowledge and working methods from different disciplines, while accounting for cultural policy, funding and audiences. It provides rich and detailed case studies of interdisciplinary production in practice across a range of international contexts. Rather than taking a specific art form as a starting point, the author focuses on the strategic act of conjunction and considers examples across multiple art forms including the visual and performing arts and beyond. Whilst providing historical and theoretical contextualisation, this book primarily focuses on new, accessible ways to both understand the promise of interdisciplinarity and execute its creation.
As the first text to examine the working process of creating complex interdisciplinary cultural projects, this book will be of interest to advanced students in various creative disciplines, including media production, cultural industries and arts management, and curating.

A remarkable interrogation of the corporeality of the divine undertaken by a renowned philosopher/theologian
Does God appear "in flesh and bones," that is to say, "made of flesh and bones"? Or is the resur-rected Christ's appearance simply "in person"? These questions, which might appear inconsequential at first sight, obsessed the Fathers of the church and medieval scholars, but are neglected nowadays. Perhaps we no longer dare to ask them to ourselves. The Flesh of God attempts to return to what Paul Ricoeur calls a "second naivete," analyzing important questions concerning the Resurrection and trying to face head-on the problem of the embodiment of the divine.
This book retraces a philosophical triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday) but also highlights the crucial and neglected topic of Holy Saturday. It emphasizes that Christianity can no longer sustain itself by forgetting the organic and disregarding the soul. Far from getting bogged down in questions of boundaries, or erecting barriers, we come back in the book to find-ing out how we can "cross the Rubicon" between philosophy and theology. The confrontation of these disciplines and their different fields can revitalize thought and faith, for those who feel the importance of sharing it.

Raising feminist concerns about the struggles of African women amid debates surrounding the socio-cultural, economic and political future of Africa remains an immense challenge. Fatou Sow, the renowned Senegalese feminist activist and academic, illustrates here her own journey through a continuously developing global discourse. Her fundamental aim is to demonstrate the emergence and development of women's and feminist studies in Africa, highlighting its achievements, failures and, most importantly, its complexity.
She argues that it is crucial to examine the influence of the patriarchy in light of Africa's historical matriarchal systems, which form the basis of the continent's social structures. Feminist research must also evaluate how gender intersects with age, class, ethnicity, caste, race and religious disparities, among other inequalities prevalent on the continent. As an African feminist, rooted in her African context and cultures, Sow is compelled to analyze conflicting realities, transformations and contradictions, as well as the complex contributions that are specific to different times and places. African cultures are not just relics of struggles against a colonial West, a West defined by domination. These cultures are primarily memories and living spaces that are deconstructed and reinvented daily, at every moment, with each generation, marked by triumphs and defeats.

First Migrants Revisited: Ancient Migration in Global Perspective reveals how human and hominin migrations over the past five million years shaped the world we inhabit today. Peter Bellwood synthesises insights from archaeology, palaeoanthropology, genetics, and linguistics to trace humanity's earliest movements - from the first African expansions to the global spread of agriculture. The book reveals how migration redistributed the results of biological and cultural evolution, transforming societies and environments in every corner of the globe.
Bringing together decades of scholarship, Bellwood challenges simplistic narratives of ancient migration as random events without cause or consequence, instead positioning it as a powerful mechanism the behind the formation and spread of new patterns in human biology and culture. Through rich interdisciplinary analysis, he shows how the permanent movements of populations created enduring patterns of genetic, linguistic, and cultural diversity that continue to define us. Covering the migrations of early hominins, Homo sapiens dispersals across continents, and the global diffusion of agriculture, the book provides a richly interdisciplinary account of humanity's shared past, drawing clear connections between environmental change, demographic expansion, and the human impulse to explore.
Deepening our understanding of migration as one of the most enduring forces in human history, First Migrants Revisited:
- Reinterprets migration as a dynamic process of redistribution of human biology, culture, and language
- Highlights the enduring consequences of prehistoric migration for contemporary human societies
- Provides new insights into the large-scale population movements that shaped the genetic, cultural, and linguistic diversity that still characterizes humanity today
- Features accessible summaries of the latest findings on early Homo sapiens dispersals and the global spread of agriculture
- Includes comparative discussions of different hominin species and their adaptive strategies
First Migrants Revisited: Ancient Migration in Global Perspective is ideally suited for upper-level undergraduate and postgraduate courses in archaeology, anthropology, human evolution, and historical linguistics, as well as for modules in global history, evolutionary biology, and population genetics within BA, BSc, and MA degree programmes.

This book explores the most pressing questions and concerns that are emerging in tandem with the development of metaverse platforms and technologies. It focuses on the central question of how the gallop towards 'bigger' and 'richer' data will extend and intensify current drives towards datafication and commodification.
The volume draws on different disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, including science and technology studies, critical data studies, communication, and media studies, and cultural studies as well as philosophy and political science to offer a range of complementary perspectives. The essays combine conceptual reflection on as well as empirical engagement with the topic of metaverse datafication and its political, infrastructural, and social implications. Key focal points include analysis of the corporate narratives that drive the current development of metaverse platforms and technologies, the computational infrastructures and material resources that enable metaverse technologies, the reconfiguration or even subversion of state power, global markets, and regulatory frameworks, the impact of metaverse practices and data on social life and personal identity, and the role that these developments play for academic research and our conceptualisation of knowledge.
This book was originally published as a special issue of Information, Communication & Society.

Negotiations of the Sacred offers a fresh perspective on one of Japan's most famous festivals, the Gion Matsuri, held in Kyoto in July. Dating back more than a thousand years, the festival today features the parading of dozens of elaborate floats and portable Shinto shrines, accompanied by thousands of participants, through more than thirty downtown neighborhoods linked to Yasaka Shrine. Based on extensive fieldwork, this is the first book-length socio-anthropological analysis of the celebrated festival, one that examines it during a critical moment in its recent history: The 2014 reinstatement of the Gion's second float procession (ato matsuri) after a fifty-year hiatus.
Elisabetta Porcu follows the complex negotiations behind the festival and the reinstatement of the ato matsuri as she investigates the boundaries between sacred and secular geographies (the temporary shrine and governmental buildings) and the areas where these boundaries blur, such as the constitutional separation of religion and the state. Because tourism and traditional culture-and the Gion Matsuri in particular-play a prominent role in the promotion of Kyoto, Porcu's study places the festival within glocalization processes to reveal the ways in which global influences are absorbed and reinterpreted according to local specifications and traditions. Throughout, she explores how power dynamics intersect with claims of authority, ownership, and distribution of the sacred.
Porcu's own autobiography and positionality in the Global South and embodied experience of the matsuri, as well as her life in Kyoto, deeply shape the analysis and theoretical trajectory of this volume. As a woman scholar conducting research in the Gion Matsuri's overtly male environment, she enriches the theoretical framing of her work by offering innovative insights on methodological issues related to gendered fieldwork, hegemonic power relations, and patterns of exclusion and control within contested spaces. Negotiations of the Sacred will be welcomed by students and scholars of Japan, particularly those interested in religion, festivals, folklore, political and social structures, and cultural heritage.

This book demonstrates how monarchy adjusted to the contours of modernity in remarkably diverse kinds of ways and contexts, preserving a central role in the configuration of the post-revolutionary world. It focuses on three geographically and politically connected frameworks: Spain, Portugal, and the new Latin American countries that emerged from the Iberian colonial territories. It analyses the intense and often conflicting processes and negotiations that characterized the monarchy's adaptation to post-revolutionary modernity and its insertion into a liberal parliamentary and constitutional system. Combining monarchical and post-revolutionary principles was one of the most notable challenges that political regimes faced after 1800. In the Portuguese and Spanish cases, as in others, it was necessary to seek a new place for the crown in constitutional parliamentarism. Liberals managed to do this by uniting king and parliament as elements of national identity and sovereign power respectively. In Latin America, monarchy was seen as a solution to the potential instability of the nascent independent states. In these cases, in addition to crown's adaptation to a constitutional regime, there was also the need to find monarchs and to legitimize them. The cases of Mexico and Brazil were indicative of these challenges and of the difficulties they brought.

Illuminating the impact of archaeology on the culture and politics of Latin America
Since the mid-nineteenth century, archaeology has played a critical role in historicizing space and shaping cultural imaginaries. It has brought modern scientific practices into structured contact with ancient objects and landscapes, on the one hand, and modern Indigenous cultures in their material and historical complexity, on the other. Archaeology has thus served a variety of disciplines and practices, from history and anthropology to literary and social criticism and critical theory, and has actively animated practices quite distinct from itself, such as public policy, tourism, urban planning, art, literature, and nation-building.
This volume provides a unique analysis of a disciplinary formation crucial to the study of cultural history and theory in Latin America. The contributors represent archaeologists and scholars from a variety of disciplines within the humanities, each of whom approaches archaeology as theory and praxis. Collectively, they map the differences and similarities between archaeological interventions and the ways in which the materiality, practice, and discourse of archaeology have been taken up as analytic, metaphor, and discursive strategy.
