This book explores what it means to study America in the twenty-first century and what the emergence of the field of New Area Studies means for the development of American Studies.

By analysing the meaning of interdisciplinarity, aesthetics, temporality, and periodisation, this book reveals both fields of study through the lens of interdisciplinary cases studies, innovative methodologies, and a global perspective. Exploring the imagined geographies of America across space and time, this book rethinks the meaning and production of place, and questions what -and where-it means to study America now.

By addressing the key issues of nation, place and people in this new disciplinary moment, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of American Studies and Area Studies.

Climate Futures Across Disciplines explores the multifaceted nature of climate futures, showcasing how early-career researchers are helping to pioneer what innovation in academia might look like.

The volume shows how emerging scholars can sustain disciplinary rigour while engaging wider ecological, political, societal, and perceptual concerns. Instead of treating climate change purely as scientific or policy analysis, the book approaches future-oriented thinking as a domain of imagination, design, and governance. Initial chapters translate climate change into lived or felt experience through creative performance, visual practice, and palaeoclimate analogues, then move to infrastructure design, fair transport decarbonisation, renewable energy markets, and inclusive water governance. The final section considers governance, law, and institutional responsibility, illustrating how climate futures unfold in sanitation systems, mining towns, carbon markets, and environmental rights frameworks. Throughout, contributors emphasise that climate futures are lived, negotiated, and unevenly experienced. Their analyses foreground justice, lived experience, and practical insight, while recognising the need for future research that connects grounded practices to accelerating risks and inequalities.

Breaking academic barriers to inspire new and innovative research approaches, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of social justice, environmental justice, climate justice, and human rights, as well as to policymakers, activists, NGOs, and public interest lawyers.

This handbook addresses the new watershed moment in youth environmental activism: the collision of the historic and globally prominent youth-centred movements on the one hand, with established, consolidated power in opposition to environmental action on the other.

The central goal of this handbook is to explore the state of the research literature on young people's environmental activism, not just as a global network of movements involving young people, but as a global exchange of ideas, sentiments, and solidarities. The book explores how young people attempt to address the global injustice of environmental damage, take action on environmental issues including climate change, and imagine the world of social and environmental justice that they would like to build. The handbook borrows a slogan seen at Fridays for Future strikes around the world - "Systems Change, not Climate Change" - and asks: what systemic change do young environmental activists envision, and how do they conceive of, and take opportunities to, enact that change? Spanning six themes, Sadiya Akram and Benjamin Bowman have curated a diverse range of experts to interrogate this question, exploring topics such as emotions and identity; creative methods; activism and pedagogy; and institutional perspectives, while combining a global and a specific-movement focus. These expert contributions include reflections, conversations, and co-writing with young environmental activists while drawing on arts-based and creative methodologies.

This innovative handbook is a key resource for students, scholars, and practitioners who are researching and working in the fields of environment and climate justice, climate change and society, climate research, young peoples' activism, and young peoples' political participation.

Resistance to Slavery in Africa: Past and Present offers a sweeping, accessible overview of how African individuals and communities have challenged slavery across centuries. Bringing together insights from Anglophone, Francophone, Lusophone, Arabic and Ottoman scholarship, this volume presents a truly pan-African perspective on resistance movements from the precolonial era to the digital age.

The collection traces resistance across diverse geographical regions-from West and Central Africa to the Indian Ocean and Sahara-demonstrating how people confronted external slave trades, local systems of bondage and enduring inequalities that survived abolition. Foregrounding voices too often hidden in the archives, this book explores creative strategies enslaved people used to claim rights, negotiate freedoms and reshape their social worlds through customary, Islamic and colonial courts. It highlights women's pivotal roles in resistance movements, from fleeing sexual violence to forging new kinship networks. Methodologically rich, the collection draws on oral traditions, microhistory, social history and digital humanities to illuminate overlooked experiences. By linking historical struggles to contemporary grassroots activism-including digital mobilisation against modern forms of slavery-it reveals resistance as an ongoing, evolving process that continues to shape African societies today.

Essential reading for scholars of African studies, slavery studies and social history, this volume reframes African resistance as locally rooted, historically continuous and globally significant. This book was originally published as a special issue of Slavery & Abolition.

The Gallipoli campaign of the First World War seems to have been exhaustively studied by shelves of books and thousands of articles. This edited volume challenges this perception of completion, revealing extensive uncovered ground, misunderstandings and even complete neglect in the historiography.

To achieve its aim, this volume brings together well-known military historians who use their unique expertise to approach the Gallipoli Campaign from the perspectives of eight combatant nations. Drawing inspiration from Keegan's famous book about the Normandy Campaign, they highlight the presence of these different nations on the Gallipoli Peninsula and the need to examine them comparatively within the context, especially the case of the Germans, French, Indians and Irish, whose roles in the campaign have been largely overshadowed. Each chapter offers missing insights and reappraisals of the published literature on the Gallipoli campaign, while seeking to avoid the oversimplification, repetition and nationalistic cliches that still haunt new works.

This book is intended for scholars, students and general readers interested in World War I and military history more broadly.

This book takes a multidisciplinary approach to explore why the EU increased its entanglement with religion while many Member States - particularly in Western Europe - were decreasing theirs. It explains the complex relationship between two parallel evolving socio-political phenomena - European integration and secularisation - by drawing from the disciplines of Constitutional Law, Sociology of Religion, Political Science, and International Relations. Qualitative evidence was obtained through interviews with officials of the EU Commission, Parliament and External Action Service working on religious engagement, as well as with the EU's key religious partner organisations. The author draws together evidence from these diverse sources to describe the EU's sui generis religion-state model, distinct from Member State ones. The book shows the EU operates pragmatically, free of ideological or historical constraints, and positively views ethical contributions to its policies and laws from religion. The EU identifies as a community of values and seeks democratic legitimacy; it sees religions as carriers of values and sources of European identity, potentially aiding its state-building efforts. The book concludes by looking at what to expect of this engagement from the EU executive and legislature in the future. The book will be of interest to researchers and academics working in the areas of Law and Religion, Philosophy of Law, Constitutional Law, Sociology of Religion, Political Science, International Relations and European Studies.

Negotiations of the Sacred offers a fresh perspective on one of Japan's most famous festivals, the Gion Matsuri, held in Kyoto in July. Dating back more than a thousand years, the festival today features the parading of dozens of elaborate floats and portable Shinto shrines, accompanied by thousands of participants, through more than thirty downtown neighborhoods linked to Yasaka Shrine. Based on extensive fieldwork, this is the first book-length socio-anthropological analysis of the celebrated festival, one that examines it during a critical moment in its recent history: The 2014 reinstatement of the Gion's second float procession (ato matsuri) after a fifty-year hiatus.

Elisabetta Porcu follows the complex negotiations behind the festival and the reinstatement of the ato matsuri as she investigates the boundaries between sacred and secular geographies (the temporary shrine and governmental buildings) and the areas where these boundaries blur, such as the constitutional separation of religion and the state. Because tourism and traditional culture-and the Gion Matsuri in particular-play a prominent role in the promotion of Kyoto, Porcu's study places the festival within glocalization processes to reveal the ways in which global influences are absorbed and reinterpreted according to local specifications and traditions. Throughout, she explores how power dynamics intersect with claims of authority, ownership, and distribution of the sacred.

Porcu's own autobiography and positionality in the Global South and embodied experience of the matsuri, as well as her life in Kyoto, deeply shape the analysis and theoretical trajectory of this volume. As a woman scholar conducting research in the Gion Matsuri's overtly male environment, she enriches the theoretical framing of her work by offering innovative insights on methodological issues related to gendered fieldwork, hegemonic power relations, and patterns of exclusion and control within contested spaces. Negotiations of the Sacred will be welcomed by students and scholars of Japan, particularly those interested in religion, festivals, folklore, political and social structures, and cultural heritage.

This book is a pioneer study of the image of the Jew in Dutch cinema within the context of national cinema and identity.

The image of the Jew is examined from the 1914 silent film Weergevonden, through antisemitic films produced in the Netherlands under Nazi occupation, Dutch films of the first decades after the Second World War, and war films of the 1980s, to movies produced in the first two decades of the twenty-first century. While Dutch films in the first half of the twentieth century tended to emphasize the image of the Jew as the "other," Dutch films since the second half of the century have been more inclined to focus on the identity of the Jew who gradually becomes a member of the collective Dutch "self." The Jew in Dutch cinema plays a special role in defining Dutch national identity, illustrating the virtues and defects of the Dutch.

Elucidating Dutch history and identity and the way in which Jews are presented as part of the issue of Dutch national identity, the book also complements the research on the images of Jews and other ethnic minorities. It will be of interest to researchers in the fields of Film and Cultural Studies, in particular those studying ethnic/racial stereotypes, cultural identity, and national cinema.

An accessible exploration of the myriad applications and challenges of generative AI for media and communication students, scholars, and practitioners alike.

The latest emergence of increasingly low-cost and scalable AI technologies presents a point of both celebration and concern for the contemporary media and information ecosystem. To this end, this edited volume gathers media and communications scholars and practitioners to engage in discussions and exchange ideas about current trends and developments in the field. Questions this volume asks include: What are the essentials of generative AI from a media and communication perspective? How has generative AI influenced research and scholarship? How has generative AI influenced media content and industries? What ethical and legal questions has generative AI introduced or reignited? How are discussions of generative AI influencing perception of the technologies? Who benefits from generative AI, and who might be disenfranchised? As generative AI develops at a rapid pace, this collection provides a calibration point for further discussion and debate around their role in media and communication.

This book will appeal to students seeking to gain greater understanding of generative AI within the media and communication industries, as well as media and communication scholars and practitioners directly engaged in generative AI research, application, and development.

This book explores the intersections between communication and transnationalism from interdisciplinary and multimethodological perspectives.

Transnationalism is a contested space where differences among people, knowledge, materials, trades, and capitals are configured within and beyond national borders. Recognizing that transnationalism remains a key driver of major social, cultural, political, and economic developments globally, this handbook assesses the current dynamics of power flows. Featuring the work of an international team of scholars, the handbook includes a wide range of critical communication and media perspectives, including but not limited to diaspora, queer/trans, intersectional, postcolonial, and decolonial approaches to transnationalism. It is divided into five thematic parts addressing key issues and concerns:

  • Conceptualizing Communication and Transnationalism
  • Transnational Digital Culture and Communication Technologies
  • Transnational Queerness and Transness
  • The Politics of Difference in Transnational Media Cultures
  • Diaspora, Postcolonialism, and Decoloniality through Transnational Communication

This handbook questions ongoing histories of imperialism and underscores the need to complicate communication theories of transnationalism from multidimensional perspectives. It is an indispensable resource for scholars and students in the fields of communication studies, transnational studies, critical cultural studies, intercultural communication, sociology, and international relations.

Cultural Game Studies provides a comprehensive framework for understanding games and play as interconnected cultural phenomena, examining their roles as art, entertainment, and human experience within contemporary society.

This edited volume delivers a societally and culturally informed critical framework that enables readers to develop a nuanced understanding of game cultures and their scholarship. Rather than studying games or players in isolation, the book contextualises the uses, design, and meanings of play as an interconnected whole. Readers will gain detailed insights into the scholarly history of game studies and its key methodologies, while exploring essential themes including player identities, game production, cultural literacy, and game preservation. The book's comprehensive approach opens new perspectives for cultural analysis and provides tools for understanding how games increasingly permeate and inform modern society and culture.

This book is written for researchers, scholars, and advanced students in game studies, cultural studies, media studies, and digital humanities. It is ideal for academics seeking to deepen their theoretical understanding of game cultures, graduate students conducting research in game-related fields, and instructors teaching courses on digital culture, media theory, or contemporary cultural phenomena.

At the heart of this collection of essays is a central question: how can humanistic education in faith-based institutions contribute to human flourishing within secular societies?

This book explores the implications of Charles Taylor's analysis of secularity for the work of humanities education in Christian institutions of higher learning. It argues that by locating themselves and their scholarship within Taylor's open frame, scholars can draw on the resources of their disciplinary expertise within the various branches of the humanities to overcome the polarizing tendencies of modern life to the benefit of all. The contributors to the volume challenge and encourage scholars in the humanities to call their students into dialogue with Taylorian themes and concepts as good neighbors working for the flourishing of the academy and the wider world. They draw on Taylor's discussion of the parable of the Good Samaritan to develop the theme of neighborliness in higher education.

An enlightening study of religion and secularism, the book will be an essential reading for scholars, researchers, and administrators in the fields of religious higher education, religious studies, and the philosophy of education.

A remarkable interrogation of the corporeality of the divine undertaken by a renowned philosopher/theologian

Does God appear "in flesh and bones," that is to say, "made of flesh and bones"? Or is the resur-rected Christ's appearance simply "in person"? These questions, which might appear inconsequential at first sight, obsessed the Fathers of the church and medieval scholars, but are neglected nowadays. Perhaps we no longer dare to ask them to ourselves. The Flesh of God attempts to return to what Paul Ricoeur calls a "second naivete," analyzing important questions concerning the Resurrection and trying to face head-on the problem of the embodiment of the divine.

This book retraces a philosophical triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday) but also highlights the crucial and neglected topic of Holy Saturday. It emphasizes that Christianity can no longer sustain itself by forgetting the organic and disregarding the soul. Far from getting bogged down in questions of boundaries, or erecting barriers, we come back in the book to find-ing out how we can "cross the Rubicon" between philosophy and theology. The confrontation of these disciplines and their different fields can revitalize thought and faith, for those who feel the importance of sharing it.

Today, most of us call the city home. The city is also the context in which we come to understand ourselves, build relationships with others, and negotiate our collective lives. Many authors have recognised this transformation entails new social and political challenges. What is less often acknowledged is how this alters the way we think about ourselves, as well as politics and social life more broadly. Humanity's move to the city entails a philosophical transformation as well as a physical relocation. Placing the city at the centre of our thinking challenges contemporary political theory, giving rise to distinctive problems, suggesting new ways of thinking, and calling for innovative methods. Living Just Enough for the City develops an urban political theory by asking "where are we?" and "where should we be going?". By using the city as both a site for theorising and a focal point it reconstructs key concepts in political theory and provides important insights into contemporary political life and the democratic possibilities of the city. It argues the central political problems facing cities, such as gentrification, growing inequality, and conflicts over citizenship, demonstrate the need for a people-centred conception of legitimate authority that challenges state sovereignty. Drawing on urban experience for insights into the nature of contemporary politics and the prospects for positive change, it argues that as individuals and communities are shaped by urban life, the city's denizens have a right to participate in its democratic remaking. Philosophising from and about the city, which is defined by change and contingency, suggests a new approach is needed. To do this, Living Just Enough for the City develops an innovative situationist methodology drawn from Pragmatism, which begins with practical problems arising in everyday experience, and incorporates personal reflection, original empirical research, and artistic representations of the city to understand, critique, and improve our shared urban lives.

Explores how spatial justice shapes equitable, empowering, and inclusive experiences

In an era increasingly defined by questions of equity and inclusion, Spatial (In) Justice: How Does It Manifest in the Built Environment? offers a vital, global interrogation of how architecture and planning impact the lived experiences of marginalized communities. Edited by Adnan Zillur Morshed, this timely volume brings together contributions from 33 leading thinkers and practitioners-architects, planners, scholars, and academics-who reflect on the ethical and philosophical responsibilities of those who shape space.

Rather than offering simplistic answers or prescriptive solutions, this book explores the complex and often contradictory ways justice is interpreted and enacted through space. The essays examine built projects from around the world to ask whether design can foster dignity, hope, and community empowerment-and how design education must evolve to foreground these values. The contributing authors grapple with the mechanisms through which spatial practices can exclude, disempower, or uplift, addressing topics ranging from justice in the city to the politics of community engagement. Throughout the book, the essays advance a critical pedagogy of design-one that scrutinizes how space organizes power and shapes human possibility.

Designing Multispecies Neighbourhoods in Urban Seascapes offers a unique practice-led investigation into the complexities of multispecies placemaking, design, and storytelling in urban seascapes-drawing on experiences from the Oslofjord, the Skagerrak, Muolkkut in Finnmarku County (Northern Norway), and the Atlantic coast of California.

Taking a cross-disciplinary approach, the book provides a nuanced account of the ecological and social functions of urban rewilding, and of how interspecies perspectives inform art, community building, and urban and societal planning. Opening with a prologue, it invites the reader into multispecies worlds, setting the stage for the conceptual terrain and approach taken. Divided into three parts, the first addresses topics that seek to connect knowledge between land and sea, and the development of viable marine neighbourhoods. The second critically engages with the practice of interspecies relations through four stories-two authored by invited contributors-offering reflections on practical experiences of more-than-human care and place-stories. The third brings together applied perspectives on rewilding, including multispecies user surveys, a new vocabulary for living shorelines, and other tools for navigating multispecies futures in urban seascapes. Taking an environmental humanities approach, the book builds a bridge between knowledge from marine science and ecological engineering, landscape architecture and art, and nature-based co-learning to open new and productive ways of thinking about the interspecies perspective in urban seascapes.

This will be a fascinating read for scholars, researchers and upper-level students in landscape architecture, marine science and ecology, societal planning, urban development, environmental design, art, and environmental humanities.

This book examines the relationship between sport, the media, and national identities in Great Britain. It draws upon case studies of different sporting events and stories, looking at the ways in which the media (re)present different narratives of the nation(s).

It focuses on the intersections between different parts of Great Britain, such as matches between two British nations within international football competitions. It also explores contested claims for national sporting glory through the achievements of individual athletes and teams. From Andy Murray's success in tennis, to the portrayal of Team GB athletes born outside of the United Kingdom, the book shines new light on ongoing debates about the perceived fragility of the United Kingdom and the place of Great Britain and its constituent parts within a post-Brexit Europe. In looking at the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year award, it considers how and where discourses of the nation intersect and what this can tell us about the significance of social issues such as gender and racial equality in sport and in wider society.

This is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the sociology of sport, sport media, the politics of sport, cultural identities, nationalism, or media studies.

This edited collection examines how the film cultures of Belarus, Poland, and Ukraine have engaged with the built environment. Across political upheavals and shifting borders, filmmakers have documented, interpreted, and imagined
the evolution of urban life.

From Soviet-era planned cities to post-Socialist urban renewal, and from industrial decline to the impact of war on public space, the essays in this volume uncover the role of cinema in constructing-and contesting-visions of urban life. How have films documented social change and revolution, engaged with histories of migration and displacement, and dreamed up alternative urban futures?

This volume presents a daring metaphysical thesis: that the divine is an explosive entity whose existence entails every proposition, every state of affairs, and every possibility-even impossibility. Bold, provocative, and deeply philosophical, this groundbreaking work explores the implications of a being for which everything is the case. Across nine chapters, Martin Vacek develops a fully realist account of divinity that challenges conventional boundaries of theology and metaphysics. It is an invitation to further inquiry, challenging readers to think radically, question deeply, and engage with philosophy's most audacious speculations.

How can historical studies help us understand today's environmental crises? What events led humanity into the Anthropocene epoch? The history of forestry offers a particularly revealing lens through which to explore these questions. Since at least the mid-eighteenth century, environmental concerns and the commodification of forests-often driven by state interests-have gone hand in hand. The rise of forestry's standardized methodologies is not only a scientific development but also a global story of power, knowledge, and resource management. This book presents a Central European history of the Anthropocene, weaving together themes of nationalism, state socialism, war, and reconstruction to illuminate their deep entanglement with environmental change.

This book explores sharenting-the widespread practice of parents or caregivers sharing information about their children online-and explores how this pervasive digital practice is reshaping childhood, parenting, and family life in a networked society.

Offering a transdisciplinary framework that integrates legal, sociological, psychological, and communication-based perspectives, the book examines sharenting from the micro-level of family life to the societal macro-level. It conceptualizes sharenting simultaneously as a communicative practice, a mode of identity construction, an evolving set of family rituals, a source of intergenerational conflict, and a regulatory challenge, among other dimensions. It also addresses emerging dynamics such as influencer parenting, datafication, children's vulnerability as data subjects, and the growing risks associated with technologies that enable synthetic media, including deepfakes.

With contributors from Central-Eastern Europe, the Baltic States, Tuerkiye, and the Global South alongside Western scholars, the volume provides a rare comparative view of the interaction between global platforms and locally situated forms of parenting and governance. The book will appeal to scholars and students interested in parenting in the digital world from a range of disciplines: sociology, media studies, psychology, law, socio-legal studies, communication studies, childhood and youth studies, and family studies.

The Legal Foundations of Religious Freedom documents the essential interdependence of human rights and religious freedom in the West, from antiquity to the present.

In The Legal Foundations of Religious Freedom, authors John Witte Jr. and Andrea Pin explore the Christian and secular origins of rights in the Western legal tradition and the complex interplay between human rights and religious freedom norms in modern law, religion, and culture. They analyze historical documents and recent cases from the United States Supreme Court, the European Court of Human Rights, and the Court of Justice of the European Union to articulate the historical, theoretical, and legal tension of human rights and religious freedom on both sides of the Atlantic. The authors contrast the serious threats to new religious minorities and traditional religious accommodations with firm new protections of religious freedoms in both Europe and America.

Ultimately calling for robust protection of the fundamental rights and liberties of all people and faiths, Witte and Pin caution that religious freedom and other human rights claims can only do so much to bridge the widening cultural divides over law and religion in modern Western societies. It is our responsibility to embrace the fundamental goods of dignity, fraternity, and justice.

This book examines how catastrophes-natural, technological, ideological, biological and socioeconomic-transform urban design and planning, potentially creating "turning points" in a city's development trajectory.

Through historical case studies, the book traces urban responses to catastrophe: the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake that accelerated European Enlightenment; Haussmann's Paris redesign addressing cholera and social unrest; Chicago's reinvention following the 1871 fire and economic depression; and New York's expressway developments that sparked community activism. Each case reveals significant shifts in urban planning theory and practice. The book explores how urban planning often begins with promising visions that ultimately betray their original intent. Drawing on Plato's Republic and the myth of Atlantis, urban development is framed as a cycle where destruction is inevitable, yet contains seeds of renewal and innovation. This examination of catastrophe's role in urban transformation offers critical insights for understanding contemporary cities and planning for their futures.

The book will be of interest to researchers and students of architecture, urban design, planning history, and planning theory.

The Art of Sustainable Stormwater: Designing Blue-Green Cities explores the needs and possibilities for transforming stormwater engineering into design for ecological and multi-functional urban spaces. With climate change and rapid urbanization causing rainfall runoff to present increasingly severe problems in cities and metropolitan regions, this book shows how stormwater can become an amenity when designers artfully capture, detain, treat and re-use rainwater, using it to generate more habitable and environmentally and socially sustainable cities. Taking a global approach, it provides useful planning and design principles and tools and illustrates inspiring case studies demonstrating how stormwater can contribute positively to natural systems, urban infrastructure, neighborhoods, parks, plazas, streets, and buildings. This book is essential for practitioners and students of landscape architecture and related environmental design fields.
