Argues that letter writing enabled a disparate and politically marginal assortment of abolitionists to take shape as a mass movement

Abolitionists and the Politics of Correspondence examines how opponents of slavery harnessed the power of letter writing to further their political aims, arguing that this practice enabled a disparate and politically marginal assortment of people to take shape as a coherent and powerful movement.

Mary T. Freeman fuses a political and social study of abolitionists with a focus on letter writing and epistolary culture. Through the analysis of correspondence, Freeman portrays abolitionism as a mass movement, made up of participants from a wide range of backgrounds, and she emphasizes the diversity of the movement's geography, membership, and political activities. The book highlights everyday Americans' involvement in abolition, shifting focus away from the affluent and publicly prominent white leadership. It pays particular attention to those who used letters to intervene in politics when other avenues were closed to them, especially women and Black Americans.

Freeman expands scholarly understandings of abolitionism by showing how letters enabled activists to transmit information and ideas across long distances in a relatively secure format and how they connected people who otherwise would remain strangers. Correspondence also provided a means of political expression to people on the political fringes and disfranchised persons. Even antislavery leaders and those whose social positions were seemingly secure often used the semi-private medium of correspondence strategically. Letter writers could hone their ideas beyond the purview of public audiences, or, when private letters became public, cultural norms granted their contents a stamp of authenticity and directness. Abolitionists and the Politics of Correspondence concerns not just what people wrote about but also how they wrote about it: how they manipulated, exploited, and subverted cultural conventions to make political statements and claims.

John's discursive and narrative techniques are targeted in this volume by means of a fresh translation, in order to assess how streams of tradition, comparable to several Judaic literatures, may be seen to have been incorporated within characteristically Johannine cycles of presentation. The central section, "Analysis," as in previous books in the series "The New Testament Gospels in Their Judaic Contexts," sets out resources of particular note for understanding John, and constitutes the principal focus. An Epilogue provides a resume of the cycles and streams of presentation, providing an explanation of John's radical departure from the structure of the Synoptic Gospels.

The Declaration of Independence proclaimed freedom for Americans from the domination of Great Britain, yet for millions of African Americans caught up in a brutal system of racially based slavery, freedom would be denied for ninety additional years until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution. In Freedom's Delay, Allen Carden probes the slow, painful, yet ultimately successful crusade to end slavery throughout the nation. This second edition, published as America celebrates its 250th birthday, probes the political divisions and racial strife still prevalent and questions the progress we've made since the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment in the face of discriminatory politics and racial inequality.

This work fills an important gap in the literature of slavery's demise. Unlike other authors who focus on specific periods or regional areas, Carden presents a thematically structured national synthesis of emancipation. Freedom's Delay offers a comprehensive and unique overview of the process of manumission commencing in 1776 when slavery was a national institution, not just the Southern experience known historically by most Americans. In this volume, the entire country is examined, and major emancipatory efforts-political, literary, legal, moral, and social-are documented over the years from independence through the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment.

Freedom's Delay dispels many myths about slavery and abolition, including that racial servitude was of little consequence in the North; that abolition was a White man's cause and Blacks were passive recipients of liberty; that the South seceded primarily to protect states' rights; and that the North fought the Civil War primarily to end the subjugation of African Americans. Meticulously researched using a wide array of primary and secondary sources, this book reveals what actually transpired in the fight for human rights during this critical era. This second edition with a new afterword ensures that Freedom's Delay will maintain a significant place in the literature of American slavery and freedom.

In For and Against a United Ireland, renowned journalists Fintan O'Toole and Sam McBride provide an accessible and measured approach to the polarized debate about Irish unification.

The prospect of Irish unification is now stronger than at any point since partition in 1921. Voters on both sides of the Irish border may soon have to confront what the answer to a referendum question would mean-for themselves, for their neighbours, and for their society.

Journalists Fintan O'Toole and Sam McBride examine the strongest arguments for and against a united Ireland. What do the words "united Ireland" even mean? Would it be better for Northern Ireland? Would it improve lives in the Republic of Ireland? And could it be brought about without bloodshed?

O'Toole and McBride each argue the case for and against unity, questioning received wisdom and bringing fresh thinking to one of Ireland's most intractable questions.

Following George Washingtons death in December 1799, writers, artists, and eulogists hailed him as if he were a god Enslaver and revolutionary, destroyer of Native American communities and father of American liberty, Washington filled numerous roles in the Founding Era. Following his death in December 1799, writers, artists, and eulogists hailed George Washington as if he were a god. It was all too much for Abigail Adams, who contended that "Simple Truth is his best, his greatest Eulogy." The plea sounds easy enough, but capturing the truth about Washington has never been straightforward. Since his death, individuals and groups have projected their values and aspirations for the United States onto Washington's memory--a process that has obscured the actual person. George Washington and His World takes simple truth as its charge. In this compelling, fresh portrait of America's indispensable founder, the canvas is broadened to include not only Washington, but his world and surroundings, so readers might better understand his legacy. Combining the latest historical findings with original primary research, award-winning historian Denver Brunsman provides new understanding of Washington's rise and influence by focusing on the people and society who made the first president's accomplishments possible. Enslaver and revolutionary, destroyer of Native American communities and father of American liberty, Washington filled numerous roles in the Founding Era. Rather than shy away from these contradictions, Brunsman embraces them to explain Washington to a twenty-first century audience. What emerges is a study in human complexity that neither celebrates nor vilifies but aims to better understand this remarkable American life.

The Western Front remains one of the most iconic, horrifying and controversial aspects of the First World War. This Cambridge Companion is a timely guide to the current state of research into this decisive theatre. Nick Lloyd brings together leading scholars to offer cutting-edge historical surveys combined with provocative and challenging new interpretations. They provide a comprehensive history of the Western Front, from war-planning and mobilisation in 1914, the emergence of a 'modern style' of warfare between 1914 and 1918, the role of coalitions and alliances, morale and the experience of colonial soldiers to the relationship between generals and domestic political leaders, the landscape of battle and the front's subsequent commemoration, remembrance and cultural afterlife. Together, these contributions highlight the seismic and enduring impact of a crucial moment in European history and demonstrate why it continues to attract interest, horror, fascination and debate over a hundred years later.

This book explores the concept of critical interiority in literature, art, and architecture within European francophone culture, spanning the late eighteenth to early twentieth centuries.

As a lived, imagined, or conceptualized interior space, critical interiority initially suggests a duality between interior and exterior spaces. However, this division is simultaneously destabilized, to the point where the distinction between the two spatial categories nearly dissolves. This paradox forms a lens through which modern subjectivity is analysed as an interiority. By examining examples of critical interiority found in architecture, literature, and visual art, the chapters in this volume illuminate the fundamental tensions of modernity regarding the subject and its relationship to authenticity, gender, identity, memory, nature, privacy, sociability, and temporality.

Set at the intersections of various critical frameworks, this book offers a unique and interdisciplinary perspective on space. It will be of interest to researchers in the fields of nineteenth-century literature and architecture, France and Belgium, general cultural history, domesticity and the city, art history and aesthetic theory, literary genres and comparative literature.

In early modern Europe, literacy was on the rise, and it became possible to reflect on one's own life and secrets in private notes, letters to family and friends, as well as diaries, memoirs, and travelogues. Privacy in Early Modern Egodocuments: Personal Lives in Historical Perspective combines historical research with an analysis of personal narratives from Eastern, Central, and Western Europe (also in the global context) to discuss what privacy meant at a time of political and social turmoil. The contributions explore personal writings by elite figures, as well as non-elite groups and marginalised voices, in a detective-like fashion, bringing into focus narratives that have long been overlooked in traditional historical studies. The authors offer insights into the evolution of the concept of privacy as well as the use of egodocuments as a vital resource for understanding individual and collective memory, particularly as shaped by the region's dynamic history.

Contributors are: Andras Bandi, Jakub Basista, Michael Green, Nere Jone Intxaustegi Jauregi, Anna Kowalcze-Pawlik, Katarzyna Kuras, Bernadetta Manys, Joanna Orzel, Francois-Joseph Ruggiu, Robert T. Tomczak, Nataliia Voloshkova, and Aleksandra Ziober.

The way an army understands warfare and how to achieve victory on the battlefield has a tremendous impact on its organization, equipment, training, and doctrine. The central ideas of that understanding form an army's Theory of Victory, which informs how that army fights. From the disasters of the War of 1812, Winfield Scott ensured that America adopted a series of ideas formed in the crucible of the French Revolution and perfected by Napoleon Bonaparte as the United States Army's Theory of Victory. These French ideas dominated American warfare on the battlefields of the Mexican-American War, the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I.

The American Army remained committed to these ideas until the successes of German blitzkrieg led George C. Marshall to orchestrate the adoption of a different set of ideas that formed a different Theory of Victory in 1940. The US Army's cycle of adopting a Theory of Victory, perfecting it, and replacing it strongly mirrored the cycle of the scientific paradigm outlined by Thomas Kuhn. The French influence in this period is remarkably consistent throughout the Army regulations and doctrine and officer education at West Point, Fort Leavenworth, the Army War College, and on American battlefields across the globe. Understanding the French ideas that dominated American warfare provides a new context to the military actions, policies, and decisions from 1814 through 1941. That new context informs more accurate analyses and helps provide more satisfying answers to the questions of American military history.

This second edition is updated from the first edition of 2012 with a significant expansion of primary sources from the curriculum of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. Michael A. Bonura offers new analysis of how the Theory of Victory was adopted, refined, and replaced, which will inform both the study of such transitions and the attempt to do so in the future.

Why did charity become the outlet for global compassion? Charity After Empire traces the history of humanitarian agencies such as Oxfam, Save the Children and Christian Aid. It shows how they obtained a permanent presence in the alleviation of global poverty, why they were supported by the public and how they were embraced by governments in Britain and across Africa. Through several fascinating life stories and illuminating case studies across the UK and in countries such as Botswana, Zimbabwe and Kenya, Hilton explains how the racial politics of Southern Africa shaped not only the history of international aid but also the meaning of charity and its role in the alleviation of poverty both at home and abroad. In doing so, he makes a powerful case for the importance of charity in the shaping of modern Britain over the extended decades of decolonization in the latter half of the twentieth century.

Aristotle's Political Philosophy offers a concise and accessible overview of Aristotle's political thought in his Nicomachean Ethics, Politics, and Rhetoric.

Aristotle's writings on politics are known for their legendary complexity and contradictions. In Aristotle's Political Philosophy, renowned scholar Mark Blitz draws connections between the Nicomachean Ethics, Politics, and Rhetoric to explain how these texts relate and interact with each other. Throughout the book, Blitz examines the foundations of political action, devoting special attention to Aristotle's understanding of virtue, justice, slavery, education, friendship, statesmanship, and speech. In doing so, Blitz clarifies the central ethical and political concepts presented throughout these works to articulate how these texts, together, advance a coherent political philosophy.

After offering a comprehensive analysis of Aristotle's political thought, Blitz ultimately argues that Aristotelian philosophy remains fundamental for understanding modern political opinions, practices, and institutions.

Beyond Hope is the first academic monograph devoted to rabbinic eschatology in Late Antiquity. It addresses distinct patterns within rabbinic eschatology that have been overlooked in scholarship and in Jewish thought. Contrary to what is usually expected of eschatology, this book demonstrates that the rabbis held a sustained eschatology of irresolution. While the rabbis occasionally waxed poetic along the lines of a perfected new world in the eschaton, a vast store of rabbinic texts depicts a deeply imperfect eschaton. This is the profound difference between rabbinic and early Christian eschatology. Despite its differences from the Christian doctrine of perfection, rabbinic eschatology aligns neatly with a different Christian concept, namely inaugurated eschatology. The eschaton is not only be hoped for in the future, but can be attained in the present. The best of all possible worlds has not yet been entirely actualized, but it has been inaugurated, in the rabbinic view by the exodus from slavery in Egypt, the revelation of the Torah at Sinai, and the construction of the Tabernacle in the wilderness. This is a paradigm shift for thinking about rabbinic eschatology, which rejects the dogmas and binaries that generations of scholars have taken for granted. In this exciting new book, Jenny R. Labendz explores the relationship between this world and the best possible world, the limits of that best possible world, and asks a crucially grounding question--what are we talking about when we're talking about the end of the world?

This book tells the story of the 'Charity' of Montpellier, a city-wide distribution of alms held once a year from the 13th to the 16th century. Such Charities were very common in the towns and cities of Southern France in the Middle Ages but have never been the focus of an in-depth study.

Through the investigation of the emergence, history, and disappearance of the Montpellier Charity, the book argues that these city-wide annual distributions of alms, while merely symbolic, served a defining purpose: unifying the community around the shared value of charity and celebrating the community's civic identity.

The Charity constitutes a prism through which the religious, political, and social forces operating in Montpellier can be observed and through which we can gain a lively glimpse of the city's everyday life and activities. But this book goes beyond local history to argue that all medieval Charities cemented and united the social fabric in a manner that was unparalleled by other local charitable endeavours.

The book therefore demonstrates that the Charity of Montpellier's significance and longevity connect to the almsgiving's ability to, year after year, reinforce the community's cohesion, all while showcasing social unity and naturalising the city's internal hierarchies. The Charity, through its mise en scene, transcended and gave meaning to the great social divides that characterised late medieval societies.

Charity and Community in Montpellier, 13th-16th Centuries addresses graduates, postgraduates, and scholars interested in medieval history, charity, urban history, poverty relief, and the pivot towards the Renaissance.

More than mere labels, medieval titles strongly defined the identities of the persons or groups who bore them. Ontologies of Titles questions modern assumptions that guide how historians frame social titles; it shows that Norse titles often were indifferent to boundaries between individual and common, person and office.
Drawing on a wide range of sources, the book explores how titles were shaped by political practice, textual production, and the conflicting aprioris governing the categorization of beings. It demonstrates how social titles alternated between signaling inherent personal qualities and abstract categories, thus revealing how language operated across multiple ontological registers in structuring social order.

"You do not see a city when you see Rome, but a piece of heaven," wrote the author of a medieval guidebook. But how did pilgrims find their way to Rome without getting lost? Where did they sleep and what did they eat? Why did both the rich and the poor set out on such long and dangerous journeys? The author of this volume explores the everyday hardships and joys of medieval pilgrims through the eyes of Nicholas of Ilok, King of Bosnia. This unique perspective offers new insights into medieval mobility and illustrates that pilgrimage was not only an expression of personal piety, but also a form of diplomacy and European cultural exchange.

This volume presents the first linguistic and philological analysis, and edition (with English translation) of a fifteenth-century vernacular manuscript from Renaissance Italy, written by an author from the city of Cremona, in northern Italy. The text is a libro d'abbaco, used to teach practical business mathematics to young boys. The vernacular language of these texts has been largely neglected. The libri d'abbaco, however, reveal much about the native language of the ordinary people and the language of banking, and artisan sectors in the major Italian cities of the time. This textbook serves as a starting point to reflect upon some key linguistic, cultural, and intellectual developments in fifteenth-century Lombardy. It provides a thorough comparative-historical analysis of the phonology, morphology, and syntax of the work, together with a detailed scrutiny of the lexicon, including specialist vocabulary and distinctively dialectal terms.

The volume broadens the understanding and mode of engagement with vernacular technical registers and early pedagogical works, and aims to throw light on the little-explored question of the language of the vernacular libri d'abbaco, in ways of interest to linguists, philologists, textual scholars, and historians.

Tracing the development of Rome over a span of 1200 years, The Topography and Monuments of Ancient Rome offers an overview of the changing appearance of the city and the social, political, and military factors that shaped it. C. Brian Rose places Rome's architecture, coinage, inscriptions and monuments in historical context and offers a nuanced analysis regarding the evolution of the city and its monuments over time. He brings an interdisciplinary approach to his study, merging insights gained from cutting-edge techniques in archaeological research, such as remote sensing, core-sampling, palaeobotany, neutron-activation analysis, and isotopic analysis, with literary, epigraphic, and numismatic evidence. Rose also includes reconstructions of the ancient city that reflect the rapid developments in digital technology and mapping in the last three decades. Aimed at scholars and students alike, Rose's study demonstrates how evidence can be drawn from a variety of approaches. It serves as a model for studying and viewing the growth and structure of ancient cities.

Athenian Democracy provides innovative readings of ancient theorists to reveal both the complexity of democracy's achievements and its limits.

In this classic work, noted political scientist Arlene W. Saxonhouse offers fresh and provocative explorations of ancient political theorists, lending new insights about democracy's foundations and principles. These insights are more relevant than ever in a moment when the viability of democratic regimes is under scrutiny. Saxonhouse provides an in-depth discussion of the modern mythmakers (Hobbes, Paine, Hamilton, Mill, and Arendt, among others) who, in praising or excoriating Athenian democracy, have in fact distorted it to support their own assessments of democracy. She then offers detailed reinterpretations of the writings on democracy of four ancient theorists who had directly experienced life in the first democratic regime: Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, and Aristotle.

Saxonhouse argues that the mythmaking that often attends our views of Athenian democracy-whether as a flawed, slaveholding regime that fostered factions and oppressed women or as an ideal regime of egalitarian and participatory democracy-blinds us to the deeper understanding of democracies that these ancient theorists can offer.

A bold new history of the Persian Wars that overturns long-held assumptions and reveals the surprising truths behind one of antiquity's most iconic conflicts Many who champion the idea of "Western Civilization" have only the loosest grasp of its history and of the Persian Wars, often portrayed as the heroic defense of "Western" values. Popular narratives frame these wars as East versus West, Greeks versus barbarians, with Greeks cast as defenders of freedom and Persians as cruel despots. This view echoes in pop culture, from textbooks to the graphic novel 300, where Leonidas of Sparta declares: "A new age has begun, an age of great deeds, an age of reason, an age of justice, an age of law..." As stirring as this vision may be, it is deeply flawed. It does not account for the fact that the Persian Empire was one of the largest and most stable of the ancient world, marked by religious tolerance and stunning cultural accomplishments. Stories of Greek exceptionalism overlook that while the Athenians lavishly praised their democratic victory over supposed Persian autocracy in the 5th century, they exercised tyrannical rule over other Greeks. By Land and by Sea offers a fresh, balanced look at both Persians and Greeks. Here, the Greeks emerge not as unified heroes but as fractious, short-sighted rivals, riven by internal conflicts. This account reveals that the Persian Wars were not an inevitable clash of civilizations but the product of miscalculations, logistical challenges, unpredictable politics, and a fatal inability to understand the other side's intentions. It is a story of mistrust and misunderstanding, far more complex and fascinating than the familiar tale of Greek heroism.

This work explores the ambivalent and often troublesome relationship that Jews and Christians had in the Middle Ages, focusing specifically on scriptural exegesis. While the shared scriptural tradition of Jews and Christians could lead to mutual understanding and rapprochement, it also inspired sharp polemic on the "right" interpretation of those same Scriptures. Even the exact text of those shared Scriptures was hard to agree on.
The essays in this volume show that the meaning of Scripture is not self-evident; it is created within a faith community. The result was a lively discussion on the meaning of Scripture between Jews and Christians. Sharp polemic and cross-fertilization occurred simultaneously. The essays in this volume will add new details and perspectives to the rich tradition of scholarship on this topic, and, in some cases, will even challenge its parameters.

A sweeping history of the tiny but politically significant territory of Gibraltar from antiquity to the present Since classical times, sailors, poets, and geographers have seen Gibraltar as a natural monument separating the Mediterranean from the Atlantic and Europe from Africa. Ancient Greeks and Romans recounted how the hero Hercules, sent on a mission to the end of the Earth, discovered an isthmus linking Africa and Europe. He destroyed it, leaving Gibraltar and an adjacent peak in Africa as the only remaining fragments of the demolished land bridge. By 1492, the strait between the continents was associated with the separation of faiths, serving as a boundary line between Christendom and Islam. After Spain's expulsions of Muslims and Jews, Gibraltar became, in the eyes of the Spanish, a fortress city on the frontier of European Christendom. The Anglo-Dutch seizure of Gibraltar in 1704 created a new border cutting the small peninsula off from Spain. Today, Gibraltar is the only territory in Europe included on the United Nations list of non-self-governing territories, and Britain and Spain continue to make claims to its few square miles. The Last Place in Europe examines Gibraltar's history from antiquity to the present, focusing on how the peninsula's dramatic geographical position has shaped mythologies, religious animosities, scientific theories, migration patterns, trade, international politics, and labor relations. Gibraltar has always belonged as much to the Atlantic world as to the Mediterranean. Geoffrey Plank traces Gibraltar's commercial ties to Portuguese, Spanish, and British colonies in Africa and the Americas. After Britain seized Gibraltar early in the eighteenth century, the town and garrison became a meeting place for merchants, missionaries, refugees, sailors, scientists, and soldiers from across the British Empire. Plank recounts notable military events during the American Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, and World War II. Legacies of past conflict have inflected Gibraltar's history through the two world wars, the collapse of the British Empire, the Spanish blockade from 1969 to 1982, Britain's withdrawal from the European Union, and Gibraltar's development as a center of off-shore international finance. With its dramatic history at land and sea, The Last Place in Europe sets a new standard for work on this area of outsized significance as a crossroads of Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic world.

This is the first English-language translation of the description of 15th-century Dubrovnik by the humanist Philippus de Diversis. The text provides a unique account of all aspects of urban life; it is unusual in that it includes themes which were not usually found in city praises, such as the plague control measures and the functioning of public offices.
Diversis' aim was to describe "the honour and the reputation of the city of Dubrovnik, which through his endeavour was to last forever". His work is documentary, literary, and personal, and as this edition testifies, it is still read and admired six centuries later.

This book is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the two Sam?alian inscriptions on the statues of Hadad and of Panamuwa II, discovered near Zincirli in the northern Levant. These inscriptions, commissioned by the kings Panamuwa I and Panamuwa II, were manufactured in the eighth century BCE. Not only are the inscriptions an important source of information on the kingdom of Sam?al/Y?dy and its governance, but they also illuminate the larger North Syrian political context, including the Neo-Assyrian strategy of subordinating local rulers. The book offers a new epigraphic, philological, literary and historical analysis of these two inscriptions.

Provides a practical plan to break unhelpful thinking and behavioural patterns for lasting change

Many people struggle with thoughts and reactions that feel overwhelming, repetitive, or out of proportion-yet don't always understand why. Breaking Negative Thinking Patterns Step by Step offers a clear, evidence-based framework to recognise and transform these recurring emotional and behavioural patterns, known as "modes." Drawing on schema therapy and the latest clinical research, Hannie van Genderen guides readers through a five-step process designed to identify unhelpful modes, understand their origins, and develop healthier, more balanced ways of responding to life's challenges.

Through the relatable stories of Sarah, Martin, and Nora, readers learn to see how modes influence their emotions and relationships-and how meaningful change is possible. Each step of the process includes structured guidance, real-world examples, and practical exercises that encourage self-awareness, resilience, and emotional growth. Whether used independently or alongside a therapist, this book empowers readers to create lasting transformation by strengthening their healthy adult mode and nurturing self-compassion.

Showing that change is achievable-not by fighting behavioural patterns, but by understanding and reshaping them, Breaking Negative Thinking Patterns Step by Step:

  • Introduces a clinically grounded plan for identifying and changing negative modes
  • Integrates the latest insights from schema therapy and psychological research
  • Illustrates each stage of the transformation process
  • Includes worksheets to support self-guided or therapist-assisted change
  • Explains how to maintain progress and prevent relapse through ongoing self-reflection
  • Offers strategies to strengthen healthy emotional patterns and balanced thinking

Combining scientific insight, professional expertise, and deep empathy, Breaking Negative Thinking Patterns Step by Step is a must-have for individuals seeking to better understand and manage their emotions and behaviour. It is also a valuable resource for therapists using schema therapy or related approaches, professionals in mental health and wellbeing roles, and undergraduate and postgraduate students in clinical psychology, counselling, and psychotherapy courses.

Featuring contributions from a variety of international voices, this volume draws
on a range of disciplinary, practice, and experiential perspectives to offer new
understandings of relationships between culture and psychosis.

Taking neither culture nor psychosis as neatly defined, the chapters trace how
individual illness and recovery experiences, treatment paradigms, and diagnostic
categories are all culturally shaped. Together, they illustrate that paying attention
to culture is crucial to understanding the complexities of lived experiences, as well
as the workings of culture in biomedicine and psychiatry. Offering a sensitive and
multi-vocal approach to the topic, the book is an innovative, timely, and theoretically
robust contribution to the emerging interdisciplinary field of mental health science.

This important book will be of interest to mental health practitioners, students,
and academics across a range of disciplines, as well as those with lived experience
of psychosis.

Reveals a conception of selfhood in Byzantine and Middle-Eastern sources that is fundamentally collective rather than merely individual, challenging Western-centric narratives of the modern self and enriching contemporary discussions on communal ways of being

What if the story we tell ourselves about of the modern self is incomplete? The Collective Self chal-lenges narrow histories of Western selfhood that limit our understanding of both past and present.

Drawing on mirror imagery as a unifying thread, this book brings overlooked sources from the eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and Orthodox Christian tradition into conversation with Western genealogies of "knowing thyself." Reflections and mirrors - an ancient technology - become embedded in discussions of self-knowledge. From the Odes of Solomon and Plotinus's Enneads to the writings of Evagrius, Athanasius, and Ephrem the Syrian, and concluding with medieval Syriac writers and a few emblematic Sufi sources, Ugolnik reveals a conception of selfhood that is fundamentally collective rather than merely individual.

The Collective Self intervenes in current debates about embodiment, interdependence, and communion by demonstrating that reflexivity and communal selfhood are not exclusively modern or post-modern innovations. By highlighting optical theories that allow convergence in perception and embodied notions of the self, this book problematizes the assumption that introspection is only mental or individual and challenges typical associations of what is ancient or modern, Eastern or Western.

In these texts, mirror imagery articulates a convergence of gazes between oneself, the divine, and glorified beings - what Ugolnik calls "I and We." This synthesis occurs through communal practices of prayer, liturgy, psalm, and hymn singing that create pathways for practitioners to participate in each other's subjectivity across space and time.

As we enter a new bio-technological and computational age, this alternative history of self-reflection offers vital resources for imagining more inclusive models of identity, empathy, and col-lective flourishing - reminding us that technology has long served as a medium for understanding who we are.
