This book is a curated literature overview that explores the evolving framework of climate justice as it intersects with global politics, ethics, economics, and human rights. It offers a structured overview of the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change, focusing on questions of responsibility, equity, and governance. At its core, the book examines who bears the greatest burden for reducing emissions and how to address the disproportionate impacts on communities least responsible for climate change. Organised across six chapters from definitional foundations through historical development, planetary-scale analysis, landscape- and community-level impacts, political dynamics, and forward-looking governance, the volume traces how the same structural asymmetry recurs at every scale: the populations least responsible for climate change bear its greatest consequences. It investigates climate-induced displacement, the rights of climate refugees, and the risks of policy solutions that may exacerbate existing vulnerabilities.
This volume also engages with the tensions between development and sustainability, particularly in emerging economies and climate-vulnerable regions. It addresses historical responsibility, climate reparations, and the financial mechanisms required to support equitable transitions.
Rather than presenting a static account of these issues, it proposes frameworks for navigating the complex terrain of climate justice. It translates intricate ethical and policy debates into accessible models for understanding, while maintaining analytical depth. The emphasis is on identifying practical, adaptive governance strategies that can inform decision-making across sectors.

This book, in tribute to the late Paul A Levine, a pioneer in the field of Holocaust history, focuses on themes identified in international research as particularly important for advances in Holocaust history and education, such as the role of 'bystanders', foreign policy and diplomacy, the role of individual actors, and Holocaust education. It aims to re-evaluate previous findings in light of new research in these areas, which were also the focal points of Levine's research.
Recent decades have shown further advances in Holocaust research in terms of new perspectives and methodologies, which have enriched and broadened our understanding. For instance, the term 'bystander' has been refined into sub-categories and has increased our understanding of how roles changed over time and in different contexts. Furthermore, local studies have nuanced our understanding, and insights about the role of distance in time and space have deepened our knowledge of rescue opportunities. In bystander countries, research has primarily focused on refugee policy and the shift from a restrictive attitude in the 1930s and the first war years to a more generous policy towards the war's end. Scholars have placed the Jewish experience at the center, and recent research has explored the formation of Holocaust memory. This volume brings together contributors to produce new research in these areas and to articulate future directions for the field.

Toxic Fear explores how fear shaped the public and private lives of those seeking to make sense of pollution in the 1980s. Driving Egan's interest in environmental anxieties is an exploration of the social and political infrastructure that took shape during the final quarter of the twentieth century. Egan ties the uncertainties rippling through American communities and across mainstream media to the neoliberal project and its deference to self-interest as the only path to prosperity. In the 1980s, that meant less government intervention, lower taxes, more privatization, and fewer controls. Above and beyond any economic or social theory, fear unsettled established ways of American life. Just as toxic chemicals became a prominent feature of the American social and physical landscape in the 1980s, traditional forms of state oversight designed to provide security for its people were eroded. Social problems and public safety were outsourced to individuals. The onus of responsibility moved from government and government agencies to a public that had, in the previous decade, abdicated environmental oversight and the necessary scientific literacy to experts no longer equipped for the job.

This book explores climate change education practices characterized by diversifying the usual avenues of academic transfer to have a greater and more relevant impact on the social contexts to which people belong. The educational initiatives showcased in the various chapters address climate change education from a socio-critical perspective, with approaches that are more ambitious than just sustainable development. This book provides researchers basic and applied knowledge on the social, educational, and communicative dimensions of climate change, and brings new ideas to the research community that question the hegemonic approach of sustainable development. Additionally, public institutions, cooperatives, and other entities involved in climate change research, social action, and education will find the initiatives showcased in the book of practical interest.

Syphilis had existed in Ottoman society since the sixteenth century, but it became an alarming public health problem in the nineteenth century. As the epidemic raged with population movements across provincial and imperial borders, Ottoman authorities mobilized medical staff and implemented public hygiene regulations. Secil Yilmaz unravels how a disease long associated with shame and secrecy became a key site through which Ottomans expanded their hegemony and governance, situating medicine and sex at the center of imperial rule.
Anatomy of Empire reveals the multifaceted implications of biopolitics found in the encounters and negotiations among the diseased, sex workers, working-class men, and physicians within a complex imperial bureaucracy. Medical knowledge and practices became effective tools to govern and discipline a population, particularly as Ottoman physicians formulated vernacular forms of sexology that re-fashioned love, desire, and marriage. As syphilis persisted across the world, Ottomans joined their European counterparts in pursuit of bacteriological discoveries to understand the causes behind the resilience of this silent yet destructive disease. With this book, Yilmaz offers a history of gender, sexuality, and medicine, one set in a consequential geography - in the lands of Ottomans at the verge of their demise - and unearths how truth regimes pertaining to the body and sexuality are indispensable components of modern imperial governance.

Design Innovation for Climate-Resilient Built Environments offers a multidisciplinary exploration of how the built environment can adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Bringing together perspectives from architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, urban planning, real estate, and construction management, the book adopts an integrated lens that examines innovation across multiple spatial scales, from cities and regions to streets, buildings, and communities. By bridging these disciplines, it challenges the traditional silos that often shape the planning, design, and management of built environments
The book begins from a simple observation: cities and buildings have always been influenced by climate. Long before the language of climate resilience emerged in contemporary policy debates, societies developed spatial strategies to cope with heat, wind, water, and seasonal variability. Drawing from this long history of environmental adaptation, the book asks how design intelligence can guide architecture and urban form in an era of accelerating climate uncertainty.
The first part, "Design Intelligence for Climate-Resilient Architecture and Urban Form," presents resilience as a design mindset shaped by vernacular knowledge, ecological thinking, and contemporary architectural innovation, aiming to create adaptive and responsive built environments. The second part, "Technological, Infrastructural, and Systemic Pathways to Climate Resilience," shifts attention to the systems that enable resilience at scale, exploring how technologies, infrastructures, and planning frameworks support climate-responsive cities. Together, these perspectives position the book as both a conceptual guide and a practical roadmap for advancing climate-resilient design and urban development.

This edited volume examines recent trends towards more global and transnational research within the field of the history of science, technology, and medicine. It focuses on three major themes which are especially important to this shift in perspective: firstly, the analysis of local/global relationships; secondly, the back-and-forth movement across borders involving encounters and exchanges; and thirdly, the significance of historical actors who played a crucial role as go-betweens-especially between Europe and other regions of the world. Distinct in its breadth, this volume offers insights into a range of topics drawn from the history of science, technology, and medicine from approximately 1760 to the present.

The book provides an extensive look at tools to assess language competence in child and adult multilingualism, as well as at the acquisition of particular grammatical phenomena, paying special attention to the Romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian, Catalan) as majority or heritage languages. The book explores numerous methodological possibilities to determine multilinguals' proficiency in their different L1s, such as receptive vocabulary measures, spontaneous language production and (parental) background questionnaires. The book also looks at multilinguals' development of Romance (non-)mainstream languages by examining a wide range of language assessment methods and the language-external factors that might contribute to a multilingual's linguistic competence. It provides new insights on the acquisition of Romance languages in several contexts: (i) as heritage languages in non-Romance speaking countries in Europe; (ii) as majority languages in monolingual and bilingual regions; and (iii) as school languages in bilingual education programs in Germany. The book contributes to a better understanding of multilinguals' language development, proficiency and dominance, starting in preschool, and particularly for language combinations with (at least) one Romance language. This book is intended for linguists with a special interest in Romance languages, school educators, teachers, and researchers in the field of heritage and majority languages.

Facial recognition technology is one of the defining surveillance technologies of our time, and as the technology continues to develop it is urgently important to consider the ways in which it amplifies and reconfigures power relations.
While much of the critical work on facial recognition technology has focused on bias and accuracy, this book considers the social, cultural, and political implications of a surveillance technology poised to dramatically transform our experience of anonymity in shared and public space. Drawing on a series of case studies to explore how existing logics of digital surveillance are transformed when physical space is equipped with automated recognition, the book develops several defining concepts for understanding what this level of surveillance means for strategies of governance and control. Long the object of physiognomic calculations, the face, as subjected to automated forms of data collection, is now already being used to predict everything from people's future career success to their potential for criminality. Further, as the authors show, as "smart" cameras proliferate, society moves into a post-panoptic realm in which people are actually being watched all the time. This shift from surveillance scarcity to glut allows "pattern-of-life" analysis on a mass scale, aiding in the customization of both physical and informational environments at the level of the individual and enabling the ongoing replacement of human-to-human interactions with automated human-to-machine ones - a process the authors describe as a "social recession."

Sideways Developments examines Hong Kong Anglophone and Cantophone literature and visual culture to trace the forms of queer and trans survival and flourishing in the Asian century. Contesting the cisgender, heterosexual, linear tropes that constitute developmentalist narratives deployed by superpowers-from colonial Britain to 20th-century America to a rising China-Cheang argues that sideways aesthetics define the narratives through which the LGBTQ+ community navigates personal and socioeconomic transitions. Through formalist analyses of a range of genres, Cheang reveals the affordances of queer and trans cultures for addressing the question of Hong Kong during its period of promised transition until 2047.
In this moment of multiple crises, Sideways Developments offers a timely hermeneutic and theory of solidarity and sustainability. The book tracks how sideways aesthetics have evolved from a feature of LGBTQ+ plots, performance, and nonlinear approaches to space-time to a form of togetherness that links postcolonial Hong Kong with struggles worldwide. Using what Cheang terms intersectional formalism as an analytical tool, the book provides a multilayered examination of the alternative pathways exemplified by queer and trans resilience and regeneration.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of innovative sampling methods. Building on the foundations of general sampling theory, it offers a rigorous yet accessible framework for understanding and implementing modern sampling algorithms.
Sampling has undergone a profound transformation since the early 2000s. This new edition has been substantially expanded and offers a far more comprehensive treatment than the first, providing both broader scope and greater depth in modern sampling methodology. It places particular emphasis on state-of-the-art approaches, including systematic and quasi-systematic designs; maximum entropy sampling designs; balanced sampling and its variants; spatial and spread sampling that ensure geographic dispersion for autocorrelated variables; sample coordination for repeated surveys; and sampling from data streams for real-time signal analysis. Sampling enables big data reduction, illustrating how sampling theory can efficiently handle massive datasets.
Each method is presented in detail with an emphasis on practical implementation. Numerous techniques are illustrated using the R programming language, and fully functional code is provided to facilitate immediate application.
This book is intended for master's and doctoral students, as well as experienced statisticians and researchers who already have a good grasp of sampling theory and wish to enrich their toolbox with theory-based, ready-to-implement techniques.

Against the backdrop of media representations of Africa through persistent and pervasive images of emaciated, starving Africans and the critical need to marshall food aid in response, Hungry Subjects places Africa's food anxiety within a broader historical context and expands ongoing food scholarship beyond its current confines in the social sciences. Njeri Githire weaves together coming-of-age texts across the African and African diasporic literary landscape in English, French, and Portuguese expression to ask how African writers incorporate food into their storylines to transmit cultural information, question norms, and propose alternatives. Eating is an intimately personal yet inherently social experience codified by public rituals and commerce, invariably linked to a larger tapestry of historical, cultural, economic, and political dynamics. Delving into the political dynamics of food as a tool of power and control alongside subversive potentialities, Hungry Subjects appraises the narrative and political thrust of (not-)eating and exposes the ways in which postcolonial manifestations of colonial-era power relations are symbolized in food's many functions and meanings.

This book critically rethinks the dominant narratives around the so-called 'liberal international' / 'rules-based' order, by examining how China discursively engages with, and mirrors, the very hegemonic order it contests. Moving beyond the commonplace representation of China as a paradoxically 'revisionist' yet occasionally 'compliant' power, it aargues that what appears contradictory is, in fact, a coherent counterhegemonic strategy rooted in discursive rearticulation rather than outright rejection.
Using a Gramscian analytical lens, the book disarticulates the ideologically fused concept of the 'liberal international order', revealing it as a hegemonic construct that equates liberalism with order and opposition with illiberal disorder. It demonstrates how China's international practices expose the ideological and relational structures underpinning liberal hegemony. Rather than simply resisting liberal norms, China mirrors and re-articulates them in an effort to position itself as a more legitimate global leader.
This book challenges IR orthodoxy by examining hegemonic representations, and by foregrounding the role of the global South - not as a passive recipient, but as an active co-producer of order. In doing so, it raises provocative questions about whether liberal hegemony is tied to Western dominance at all, or whether it may survive its unmaking by being mirrored into new forms.

This book examines the role of actors who support adjudicators at various stages of the dispute resolution process, comparing their functions across some 20 international dispute systems.
Referred to as 'Dispute Assistants', they include legal officers, referendaires, jurisconsults, and other registry or secretariat staff. Their functions are studied through doctrinal research, supplemented by discussions with relevant actors, so as to capture their actual influence on the adjudication process. The book highlights the widespread nature of their contribution. It also addresses legitimacy concerns about their potential undue influence on the mandate of adjudicators, drawing on case law, critiques from states, scholars, practitioners, and informal interviews with insiders. The last part of the book focuses on the WTO; inspired by various practices in other systems, it offers suggestions to address concerns over the quality and credibility of dispute actors, and to enhance the legitimacy of the WTO DSS and other systems.

Voluntarism and Self-Interest: Psychological Foundations and Panarchist Visions in Libertarian Anarchism investigates a central question in political philosophy: what, if anything, makes political authority legitimate? The book argues that theories of political legitimacy should be evaluated primarily in terms of their practical relevance-whether individuals have instrumental reasons to endorse them. Drawing on findings from experimental psychology about the prevalence of selfish motivations, it develops the claim that the most compelling theory of legitimacy must be one that effectively serves predominantly selfish desires.
Through a systematic analysis of competing accounts of legitimacy, the book argues that express consent theory offers the strongest fit with this motivational structure. It then explores the institutional implications of this conclusion by examining panarchist proposals for voluntary, non-territorial systems of governance that follow from a consistent application of consent theory.
Bringing together analytic political philosophy, conceptual analysis, experimental psychology, and the history of libertarian thought, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of political theory, political philosophy, anarchist studies, and libertarianism, as well as readers concerned with the foundations and future of political authority.

How should EU law be taught in the present day, with the European Union's post Brexit reality, a continental conflict in Ukraine, and a new digital market?
The answer is provided by this important new textbook. With a unified analytical voice, it provides a comprehensive overview of European Union law. It expertly explains the EU's constitutional foundations, institutional framework, and substantive policies, with a welcome simplicity of tone, without sacrificing analytical rigour. Where other books can place too much emphasis on the constitutional elements, it places similar weight on the economic dimensions of the EU, particularly its new digital market. The author's standing as both a scholar and practising lawyer infuses the book with a practical tone, taking the subject out of the abstract and into the everyday, allowing for students' full engagement. Its approach and tone will map particularly well on continental courses, where the next generation of EU lawyers are emerging from. This is a landmark publication in the field of EU law teaching.

This volume examines the devastating impact of India's Partition on mental health services and individuals with mental illness. Occurring in mid-20th century, after the Holocaust and World War II, the Partition brought similar prejudice, trauma, and displacement in South Asia, yet its psychological consequences have remained largely unaddressed in medical education and practice.
Edited by psychiatrists, the book breaks this silence by tracking the breakdown of civic society, collapse of medical services, and violence against citizens during this cataclysmic event. Contributors draw from clinical experience, archival research, literature, media history, and political theory to investigate gendered violence, the division of mental hospitals, disrupted medical care, and the neglected inner lives of ordinary people. The book highlights how the failure to establish accountability or discuss the psychological impact of violence on victims has blighted post-Partition nations. With post-colonial partitions continuing worldwide, it emphasizes how care for the ill and disabled-civilization's defining feature-is forgotten amid political conflicts.
This interdisciplinary work will resonate with students and researchers in psychiatry, psychology, social welfare, mental health policy, and political history, offering valuable insights into medical history, social psychiatry, trauma studies, health planning, and gender awareness.

This is the first book to comprehensively explore the role of solidarity in international disaster response law (IDRL), offering a timely and transformative vision for this regime governing cooperation in disaster response.
As disasters intensify due to climate change, solidarity is increasingly invoked by states and others as a principle guiding disaster response. Yet its role remains underexplored and underutilised, risking solidarity to function as a mere rhetorical device. This book responds to that gap, offering a comprehensive examination of the meaning, legal status and implications of solidarity in IDRL. It demonstrates solidarity can reorient IDRL from a sovereignty-centred regime characterised by state autonomy and voluntarism to one focused on the protection of disaster-affected persons through differentiated international cooperation and assistance.
The book further explores how solidarity could reshape specific legal and practical issues that challenge international disaster response. By analysing these issues through the lens of solidarity, the book offers novel perspectives that can break new ground in finding concrete solutions for persistent challenges within the regime.
This analysis comes at a pivotal moment. In 2024, the United Nations initiated negotiations for a multilateral convention for international disaster response, signalling growing recognition of the need for a universal treaty in this area. Against this backdrop, the book is both timely and ambitious. It not only exposes the untapped potential of solidarity but also provides a practical roadmap for its implementation, seeking to shape the development of IDRL to meet the demands of an increasingly disaster-prone world.

This book brings together the essential debates concerning the emergent area of Digital Humanities in India. Through the interviews, the book attempts to identify the differences and convergences between DH practice in and that of Global North. The book can be seen as a compendium for exploring multifarious layers of the 'digital' and its relationship with humanities, academia and beyond which have bestowed DH (in India) with many complications and contentions. Conversations on the Digital Humanities depicts the chequered and amorphous nature of DH practice in India - as an academic discipline, as a methodology, as community projects and as an appendage to existing discipline of literary studies, towards charting the features of DH as an emerging discourse. For example, for some scholars DH is understood as a 'method', while others consider it to be a discipline; similarly, while some scholars agree DH in India as a derivative of DH in the Global South, others consider DH as in India as different from DH in the Global North. This book brings together these different, yet diverse and distinct notions in form of conversations, not to provide a uniform understanding of DH, but a comprehensive view of the paradigm of what can be tentatively understood as 'Indian DH'. As editors, we ensure that this book captures the pluralities around the concerns of DH, that are determined not by us, but by scholars and practitioners who have been steering the area of DH.
This volume will be of interest to those making their initial entry into the area of DH; particularly, students of literary studies, cultural studies, media and communication studies. The volume brings together diverse voices concerning not only Digital Humanities practice but also practices concerning the broader discourse of the digital and digitality; alongside, the volume will allow readers to engage with the evolving landscape of Digital Humanities with respect to the Indian context.

Adopting a spiritual history approach, this book traces the evolution of the concept of "New Women," which first emerged in China during the 1920s and 1930s. It reveals the profound significance of this concept, as well as the inherent tensions and losses involved in the creation of a modern Chinese identity.
Taking "leaving home" as its analytical starting point, the study examines the life histories and spiritual trajectories of "New Women" in Republican China. Although leaving home initiated their quest for independence, the question of "belonging" remained an ever-present shadow. Through a rigorous analysis of notable figures such as Ding Ling, Xie Bingying, and Xu Guangping, the book explores how this tension unfolded during significant historical events, including student movements, romantic relationships, revolutions, and material culture. The book argues that when "New Women" left home to resist arranged marriages, they sought alternative emotional support in new social relationships yet confronted new challenges. Ultimately, their spiritual history often led to two typical trajectories: Sublimation of the self through dedication to a "greater self" or a collective, or a descent into material consumption and the "bodily utopia" of self-decoration.
This volume will serve as an invaluable reference for scholars and students of modern Chinese history, Chinese feminism, and Chinese social history.
