On 23 October 1956, Hungarian students staged a peaceful demonstration in Budapest, trying to publicize their specific demands for change. By nighttime, frustrated by hardline speeches and lack of response by the leadership, they toppled Stalin's bronze monument. Hours later, Soviet tanks rolled in. The first Soviet military intervention had begun. The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was not an isolated revolt but a transnational rupture--one of the first major fissures in the Soviet bloc that reshaped dissent and repression across Eastern Europe for decades. But how did the youth across the communist bloc actually respond? The popular reactions to Hungary 1956 were far from uniform in the Soviet Union and people's democracies. Many youth in communist organizations, like the Komsomol, applauded the Soviet military invasion as 'restoring order'. Some blamed Nikita Khrushchev, claiming that if Joseph Stalin had lived, the Hungarian uprising of 1956 could have been prevented. Others were indifferent or disapproved in silence. Sensitive youth contributed to debates, but then after sharp rebukes, retreated into shame-based self-censoring. Still other independent-thinking youth, probably a minority, spread leaflets or essays demanding change. Nationalists adopted new legalist strategies. Regimes responded with both crackdowns and concessions. Drawing on memoirs and documents from secret police and Communist Party archives, The Hungarian Revolution of 1956: Tremors in the Soviet Bloc offers the first single-authored, archive-based comparative study of elite and popular reactions across East Germany, Austria, Romania, Soviet Ukraine, and Soviet Russia, both Moscow and Leningrad, as well as the Urals and Siberian regions. Moving beyond Cold War binaries and single-country case studies, this book examines both similarities and differences in how citizens and regimes reacted to the Hungarian revolt of 1956 and the Soviet military intervention. The lessons of 1956 are still relevant in today's struggles against oppressive regimes.

In 1967, the Russian writer and dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote, 'Looking back, even a fool would have been able to predict it today: the Soviet regime could certainly have been breached only by literature.' In Writing the Nation after Stalin, Erin Hutchinson tells the story of a multiethnic cohort of young Soviet writers from villages who set out to remedy a social injustice--the oppression of the peasantry under Stalin--and ended up challenging the Soviet state. Their literary works, published within the official system, praised national values and traditional village culture and helped fuel a resurgence of ethno-nationalism in the USSR. In the late 1980s, several village writers became leaders in the nationalist movements that helped trigger the break-up of the Soviet Union. In a communist country that prided itself on being 'the most well-read in the world', literature was always political. But how was it possible to publish literary works that challenged Marxist-Leninist ideology in an authoritarian, communist country? Writing the Nation after Stalin traces the lives of a generation of writers as they abandoned the violence and poverty of the Stalin-era village in search of literary fame. Drawing on fresh archival material from Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, and Moldova, Hutchinson reveals how these rural migrants navigated the complicated world of Soviet cultural politics and pushed for change despite harsh censorship. This book tells a new story about the reemergence of nationalism in the USSR after Stalin's death through an array of sources in four languages, including archival documents, diaries, memoirs, letters, novels, and KGB reports. As Hutchinson shows, nationalism spread through central Soviet institutions originally designed to suppress it. Ideas developed in one Soviet republic quickly gained popularity in others. Although the development of nationalism in the USSR was surprisingly internationalist, it nevertheless put these national groups on a collision course in the late 1980s. Writing the Nation after Stalin is a reminder that we are still living in the world that Soviet literature helped create.

This book addresses contemporary translator training, discussing the various ways translators (and other language professionals) acquire and perfect their skills in rapidly evolving markets and a complex global context. The authors examine formal and more 'traditional' types of training, such as postgraduate degree and certificate programs, but also examine and propose alternative types of knowledge acquisition and skills-building, such as ongoing professional development, workshops, peer-to-peer learning, and community-based or non-academic initiatives. The book critically examines translator training (in a broad sense) in Canada, though the chapters will be applicable and relevant in other contexts, especially bi- and multi-lingual settings. The fact that Canada's demolinguistic profile is increasingly heterogenous suggests that the need for translation and multilingual communication - and thus adequately trained language/multilingual professionals - is not only real, but pressing, a situation mirrored in other regions around the world. This book's findings will be relevant to academics, students, and practitioners in fields including Translation Studies, Professional Education, Additional Language Learning, Canadian Studies, and Language Policy and Planning.

This project was an equal collaboration of Renee Desjardins and Valerie Florentin.

This book presents cutting-edge research on simultaneous interpreting based on a multimodal corpus. It examines various aspects of pausing, an important non-verbal feature, such as its frequency, duration, and syntactic distribution in professional interpreters' English-to-Chinese simultaneous interpreting. In addition to describing the pause characteristics, the book investigates their connections with interpreters' behavior and cognition. It also introduces the procedures for constructing a multimodal simultaneous interpreting corpus and the analytical methods used in its application. As one of the first books to employ in-depth multimodal corpus analysis in the study of simultaneous interpreting, it advances corpus-based interpreting research and serves as a valuable reference for scholars in the field.

Greek and Romance dialects in southern Italy have been in intensive contact with one another for centuries, leading to convergence in their grammars in many key respects that are too striking to be dismissed as accidental. This volume investigates fundamental research questions relating to the exact nature of these Greek and Romance contact grammars, which present a unique opportunity to study, test, and challenge theories of contact-induced morphosyntactic change. They serve as an experimental laboratory in which minimal grammatical differences between two highly homogeneous linguistic systems can reveal what precisely may vary and which linguistic mechanisms underpin that variation. Moreover, Greek and Romance have been spoken alongside each other for centuries in two separate linguistic 'islands' of southern Italy which have themselves never been in contact with one another: this allows a valuable comparison between different outcomes and scenarios of linguistic change and variation involving the same phenomena and the same language families across two otherwise very similar contact situations. Despite a wealth of phonetic and lexical research, there is still remarkably very little known about the morphosyntax and the potential areas of contact and interference between these two linguistic groups. These scarcely investigated areas of variation and contact are explored in detail in this book through a series of case studies from the nominal, sentential, and clausal domains, with the aim of presenting the first integrated and comparative account of Greek and Romance morphosyntactic contact in southern Italy. By bringing together the best in traditional dialectological scholarship with the state-of-the-art in formal analysis, the interpretation and assessment of the Greek and Romance linguistic evidence presented in this book makes a fundamental contribution to current linguistic theories and to the understanding of microvariation and the mechanisms and processes involved in contact-induced language change.

This book offers the first historical summary in English and source text in Dutch of the Tayuoan Consistory Minutes recorded between 1643 and 1649 at the Castle Zeelandia in Formosa (today's Taiwan). The minute recordings occurred at a crucial moment in the existence of the Dutch East India Company in Taiwan in the 17th century and are complemented with an annotated Introduction that contextualizes the manuscript from an historical perspective. The public disclosure in Dutch transcription and English translation is one of the few remaining primary sources covering the Calvinist mission history of the Dutch pioneering settlement in Formosa. It is concise and the reading is factual, yet enriching from a multitude of perspectives.

The main topics cover the growing community of Calvinist believers, the expansion of the education, and the evangelization of the Indigenous, such as the inspection of the schools, finances of the church and the diaconate, mobility and community membership among the VOC employees. These come to make the record of important events, evaluation of personalities and socio-economic development of the Dutch community and an emerging indigenous community of believers. This serves to deepen the understanding of the goal of the Church consistory to act as an instrument in carrying out VOC policies. We want to draw attention to illustrate how this contributed to an emerging citizenry. The manuscript is replete with valuable information about the colonial encounter, the contact with the Indigenous, the tension between a clerical and secular society in establishing a Calvinist community, and most of all to contextualize the historiographic intervention. It helps to critically scrutinize the colonial biases and its inherited narratives, and offers against the background of the traditional echoed perspectives of the VOC as a "merchant" organization, a glimpse into what this pioneering settlement was all about.

Lu examines the conditions under which China could be integrated into the US-led liberal international order through US engagement policies. This analysis operates within the broader framework of a hegemon's deliberate strategy to incorporate a rising great power into its established order and to shape the rising power's foreign policy-a frequently overlooked dimension of China's relationship with the still largely US-led international system.

Through the development of a comprehensive framework for understanding state socialization, the book demonstrates that China's integration into the liberal international order through US engagement faces fundamental structural obstacles. Rather than depending on the hegemon's ideational influence, this socialization process is primarily determined by the degree to which external ideas align with Beijing's domestic priorities and status objectives.

This book is an essential reading for scholars and academics studying China's international relations, US-China relations, Asia-Pacific politics, and global governance.

Electoral management bodies (EMBs), the institutions designated to manage political change inclusively and peacefully, must be trusted for election results to be accepted. Trustworthy Elections: The Role of Electoral Management Bodies explores how stakeholder feelings of injustice complicate transactions and information flow with electoral authorities and deplete the legitimacy capital that EMBs require to expedite democracy.

While the technical delivery imperatives of election administration are well understood, there is a wider range of stakeholder needs and expectations that matter for trust-building. In addition to delivery-oriented transactional trust, EMB trust-building must also include values-oriented relational trust and the predictability that allows for security-based trust. By highlighting stakeholder viewpoints, the book provides a social perspective to what has been seen as a technical and administrative problem and outlines a broader range of pathways for EMB trust-building policy and practice. Conceptually innovative, and drawing from a rich set of empirical data, it showcases the stresses and dynamics particular to elections and provides policy-oriented insights.

With this book, Therese Pearce Laanela aims to inspire and inform policy makers, practitioners, and scholars on strategies for electoral authorities to earn the trust needed for accepted elections and peaceful political transitions.

How the US military origins of global capitalism facilitated both South Korea's "economic miracle" and the decline of US industrial might

The US military has become a ubiquitous part of modern economic life. The Cold War prompted the first permanent overseas deployment of US troops and the creation of a global network of US military bases. Today, US military facilities can be found in every US state and overseas territory, as well as in dozens of foreign countries. The creation of this empire of bases cost billions of dollars and required the cooperation of states, corporations, and workers from around the world. It also remade the US military into the world's most significant economic force.

In Standardizing Empire, Patrick Chung examines the historical processes that led to the creation of the US military's astounding global footprint and reckons with the wide-ranging consequences of its globalization. Focusing on the Korean War and the subsequent militarization of South Korea, Chung traces how US military contracts came to influence the production of countless everyday items, such as cast-iron pipes and clothing, as well as a range of essential services, including transportation and construction. He deploys the term "military-industrial capitalism" to describe the new economic system centered on US military consumption.

To illustrate the pervasive impact of military-industrial capitalism, Standardizing Empire charts the histories of three of the leading South Korean multinational corporations today: shipping company Hanjin, steelmaker POSCO, and car manufacturer Hyundai. These case studies depict the companies' early ties to the US military and explain how they came to produce, sell, and employ workers worldwide, including in the United States. Standardizing Empire explains not only how today's US-led capitalist world economy originated but also how the emergence of military-industrial capitalism facilitated both South Korea's "economic miracle" and the decline of US industrial might.

1989 in the East revisits the processes that led to the collapse of communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the USSR. This disintegration appeared to be the result of complex mobilisations where the repertoires of action, the institutional and non-institutional ties, the ideological preferences, and the identities of the actors, including the most official ones, have been profoundly changed. The modes of contestation have gone from a self-limited subversion of established institutions, with some forms of collaboration with the regime, to much clearer and more radical forms of head-on opposition. Opposition movements developed according to rhythms and modalities specific to each country, sometimes to each social sphere. Social mobilisations, institutional transformations (both visible and less visible), and the emergence of new actors in all social spheres are therefore central issues in this book.

This book, based on rich empirical material, will be of interest to specialists in the region, as well as, more generally, to students of regime change and collapse, political crises, social movements, authoritarian regimes, and the forms of mobilisation that develop within them.

What is terrorism? How do people become terrorists? To what extent can terrorism be considered rational? Quassim Cassam and Richard English tackle these vital questions in How to Think About Terrorism. How to Think About Terrorism transforms how we understand terrorism, through innovative engagement with philosophical ideas and arguments as they intersect with historical and political thinking. This book reflects on the vital question of definition, recognizing that a useful description of terrorism should be sufficiently flexible and open-ended to accommodate the great variety of terrorist methods, motives, objectives, perpetrators, and targets. Quassim Cassam and Richard English offer a philosophical (but empirically and historically grounded) account of the differences between non-state terrorism and state terrorism, and of the dynamics and nature of state terrorism itself. The authors address the question of how people become terrorists, combining in a Hybrid View the strengths of generalist and of particularist approaches; and offer a realist middle way between irrationalism and rationalism. How to Think About Terrorism offers a complex and historically nuanced account of the relationship between religion and terrorism, and reflects systematically on the extent to which terrorism can, in principle, be morally justified. In terms of counter-terrorism, this book argues that philosophical thinking about torture should focus on real rather than artificial scenarios; it also draws together its cumulative argument in an innovative assessment of the moral, political, and practical foundations for a range of counter-terrorist approaches, an analysis intended to be as practically relevant as it is analytically compelling.

The global ecological crisis is increasingly manifesting itself in different regions of the world, here in East Asia and Europe. It produces multi-situated inequalities on a global scale, drawing new geographical, climatic, social, and moral boundaries in an "ecological cosmopolitanism." Democratic and authoritarian governments put in place biopolitical apparatuses for societal reinvention. Individuals develop social, economic and emotional capabilities for survival, recovery, and mobilization in the post-disaster process. In Western Europe, environmental and disaster sociology has been built around a Western way of thinking about the relationship between risks, disaster, and modernity. Japanese and Chinese sociologists/anthropologists highlighted non-Western approaches to disasters. This book is a contribution to the post-Western sociology in a cross-pollinization process where "Western" and "non-Western" knowledge about disaster do interact, articulated through cosmovisions to move towards dialogical between East Asia and Europe.

Explores the complex and underappreciated role of civilian self-defense groups in northeastern Nigeria during the Boko Haram insurgency

People as Protection is a groundbreaking exploration of the complex and underappreciated role of civilian self-defense groups in northeastern Nigeria during the Boko Haram insurgency, particularly the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). Emerging in 2013, the CJTF was a grassroots initiative led by civilian populations, especially youth, to protect their communities from Boko Haram terror and the brutality of military forces. Caught between insurgents and the state, young volunteers patrolled their neighborhoods and risked their lives to prevent attacks while working alongside security forces many considered complicit in civilian harm.

Focusing on the deep motivations of these civilians, Daniel E. Agbiboa reveals how young Nigerians, when they chose to protect their communities, were driven by a desperate hope for security, a profound sense of patriotism, and personal courage. He shows how political emotions, such as a desire for recognition, dignity, and belonging, fueled civilians' willingness to act, even as they grappled with, and sometimes contributed to, the deeply fraught nature of the Nigerian state. These civilians, he argues, remain emotionally tethered to the dream of a safer future, despite systemic betrayals.

People as Protection further reveals how civilians actively reshape security and governance in conflict zones, often through acts of profound political and emotional significance. Challenging the view of civilians as victims or pawns, and through extensive interviews and ethnographic fieldwork, Agbiboa uncovers the grit, courage, and emotional investments that drive the CJTF's efforts. By foregrounding the roles of patriotism, political emotions, and grassroots values, he brings civilian agency into focus within the boundaries of security, governance, and citizenship in one of the world's most volatile regions.

The idea of modelling systems using graph theory has its origin in several scientific areas: in statistical physics (the study of large particle systems), in genetics (studying inheritable properties of natural species), and in interactions in contingency tables. This new and extended edition of Graphical Models provides the basic mathematical and statistical theory of graphical models, incorporating the many advances that have been made in the field since the publication of the first edition in 1996. Lauritzen discusses basic graph theory and the fundamentals of conditional independence both in abstract form for conditional independence based on graphs and for probabilistic conditional independence. The associated Markov theory, forming the basis of all models in the book, is treated in some detail. The statistical theory based on likelihood methods and conjugate Bayesian analysis is developed for log-linear and Gaussian graphical models, as well as for graphical models involving mixed discrete and continuous data. A new and important chapter is devoted to structure estimation because this has become a dominating part of modern developments. Causal interpretation of models based on directed acyclic graphs and chain graphs are also discussed. The appendices contain some of the general mathematical results needed as background for the main contents of the book, including basic measure theory and the theory of Markov kernels, convex optimization, properties of the multivariate Gaussian distributions and derived distributions, as well as a brief exposition of the theory of exponential families.

The story of how Hurricane Camille, which struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1969 as a Category 5, changed the way the nation responded to disasters

Hurricane Camille, which struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1969, was one of only three Category 5 hurricanes to hit the United States in the twentieth century. In this book, Andrew Morris tells the story of how this one storm changed the way the nation responded to disasters. From that point forward, Americans came to expect the federal government to play a major role in aiding individual disaster victims and helping disaster-struck communities rebuild.

For most of US history, Morris recounts, this was not the case. Localities, states, and charities such as the American Red Cross were on the front line of disaster response. But after World War II, the nation's prosperity and growth put billions of dollars of homes and businesses in harm's way-particularly in storm-prone regions like the Mississippi Gulf Coast-and exceeded the capacity of this system to respond.

When Hurricane Camille struck Mississippi, it ravaged a vibrant coastal economy buoyed by tourism and federal military and space facilities. Moreover, it struck a state that was in the last throes of resistance to the application of federal civil rights laws. And it struck at a particular political juncture in American politics during which a Congress still dominated by the Democratic Party had an expansive view of the nation's commitment to the less fortunate while newly elected President Richard Nixon sought to draw conservative southerners into the Republican party.

Morris argues that all of these dynamics-the sheer scale of destruction, the activism by civil rights advocates for equitable care of African American disaster victims, the desire of southern elites for government subsidies to rebuild a risky coastal economy, and the openness of officials in Congress and the White House to broaden the reach of federal authority-led to a system in which, in the twenty-first century, Americans assume the federal government will be there for them in the wake of disaster.

This book explores a series of Australian 'shadow places' that manifest complex stories of colonised Australia in the throes of environmental crisis. These are places-from nuclear testing grounds, to extractivist landscapes, to the frontiers of colonial violence-that bear the heaviest burdens of capitalist colonial culture, but are routinely considered out of sight and out of mind. Engaging with a range of shadow places across southern Australia via literary, cultural, and critical sources, Shadow Country argues that these places are with us all the time, threaded into the imaginative and material worlds that compose our homes. Through localised stories of environmental disaster, colonial violence and profound injustice, shadow places connect to the most pressing issues facing human society-environmental futures, social justice and the imperative of decolonisation.

This book will be of great interest to students and scholars with an interest in the intersection of environmental crisis and colonial legacies, and the complexity of living in a time of reckoning with these.

The representation of the ancient world in film has long been an established site of scholarly interest, but animation remains understudied. Given the medium's popularity and its role as an access point to ancient history for young audiences, it deserves more attention and analysis. Why do certain elements of the ancient past resonate and recur in cartoons? Do these productions render the ancient world more accessible, or do they reinforce a sense of distance? This collection of sixteen essays, written by a diverse group of leading scholars, offers answers to these questions as it explores how animation has utilized ancient stories, handed down through mythology, history, and philosophy. In the first section, "Heroes," chapters reflect on the enduring popularity of Hercules, Odysseus, and Icarus, as they explore how mythological tropes, characters, and imagery are frequently mixed and matched to create hybrid interpretations of these timeless tales. "Worlds," the second section, expands outward from the heroic realm and contemplates how animation enables the re-creation of fantastical ancient landscapes. Contributors investigate the classically inspired escapist utopia of Cloud Cuckoo Land in animated productions such as The Lego Movie, Adventure Time, and Gravity Falls, as well as the deployment of the concept of katabasis (descent to the underworld) in features such as Spirited Away and Weathering with You. The last section, "Histories," shows how animation has been used to reconceive the events of the Greco-Roman past in vivid and sometimes subversive ways. Contributors show how Soviet animations drew upon the wise men of antiquity to promote Soviet ideology, and how other productions used representations of Alexander the Great, the Emperor Nero, and the ideas of the philosopher Xenophon to re-evaluate ancient styles of political leadership. This collection adopts a global perspective and shows how an analysis of these productions might not only help us better understand how ancient history is received by a modern audience but can also reveal new aspects of ancient texts themselves, offering clearer and more expansive visions of the past and present.

1492: a year that captivated the world. Columbus's "discovery" of a new continent is widely remembered for revealing both the wonders of the earth and the unprecedented capacity of men to free themselves from boundaries. But the invention of America was actually a story untold: the consecration of a new relationship between nature and mankind, which saw capital and race unite irrevocably.

Sylvie Laurent tells the story of racial capitalism as a "two-headed creature" forged by figures such as Daniel Defoe in Robinson Crusoe, Voltaire, Adam Smith, and Alexis de Tocqueville. Beneath these authors' fantasies of a free-market land of endless riches is the empire of racial capitalism. However powerful, this system has been identified and resisted by a long line of anti-colonial theorists, from Rosa Luxemburg to W. E. B. Du Bois. Against the backdrop of their thinking, and at a time when it is commonplace to oppose class struggles and racial demands, Laurent illuminates the rich and little-known intellectual tradition of overcoming the divide. It's about time, she argues, that Karl Marx and Martin Luther King Jr. get to talk to one another.

Capital and Race: The History of a Modern Hydra is a timely and gripping intellectual history that will be of interest to historians and general readers alike.

The first book to focus on the newspapers edited by Frederick Douglass and their impact on Black organizing

A robust body of work has established the importance of print in general, and newspapers in particular, to African American culture in the 1800s. Such work regularly acknowledges Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) as one of the most influential newspaper editors of the nineteenth century, a judgment that Douglass and many of his contemporaries shared. But while recent scholarship has continued to expand our understanding of Douglass's life and work, his newspapers remain largely understudied. Frederick Douglass's Newspapers is the first book that explores the full range of Douglass's periodicals.

Benjamin Fagan traces the making and impact of the four newspapers edited by Douglass: the North Star (1847-1851), Frederick Douglass' Paper (1851-1860), Douglass' Monthly (1858-1863), and the New National Era (1870-1874). Fagan highlights how Douglass and his co-workers-which included Martin R. Delany, James McCune Smith, William C. Neil, and Douglass's daughter Rosetta Douglass, among others-practiced versions of Black organizing as they made his newspapers. By teasing out the inner workings of Douglass's newspapers, Fagan explores the complex and often messy practices of Black organizing that made these publications possible.

In doing so, this book places Douglass's newspapers at the center of the story of Black organizing in the nineteenth century. Douglass's newspapers not only offered examples of how to organize for Black readers across the country, but he and his co-workers also participated in a variety of other kinds of Black organizations. Writers for Douglass's papers put such experiences into print, and stories and lessons of Black organizing filled the pages of Douglass's newspapers. They covered a variety of issues: abolitionism, school integration, politics both domestic and international, the Civil War, and the burgeoning Black labor movement, among others. Fagan's close examination of the making of Douglass's newspapers as well as what appeared in their pages chronicles how his publications were simultaneously examples and archives of Black organizing.

A multisensory approach to the study of Shi?i Iran that examines how devotional Moharram performances changed over time

The mourning traditions of Moharram comprise a body of Shi?i Muslim devotional performances commemorating the martyrdom of Hosayn ibn ?Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and the Third Imam of the Shi?i, in 680 CE. These traditional rites are performed during a period of communal mourning when Shi?is remember Hosayn's sacrifice and affirm their allegiance to him and to the Prophet's family. Through remembering the martyrs of Karbala, Shi?i Muslims reflect on their own afflictions and aspirations, and how these bear consequences for everyday ethical and devotional conduct.

Babak Rahimi analyzes Moharram in Iran through the five senses-sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste-with an emphasis on the relationship between religious practices as embodied experiences and how these performances-and practitioners' experiences of them-have changed over time. Rahimi begins his investigation in the nineteenth-century Qajar period, when Moharram became a pervasive urban communal practice across most of Iran. He covers the Qajar-era dramatic performances of ta?ziyeh, their transformation into cultural spectacles during the Pahlavi era, the public processions in the form of urban street protests in 1978, the tent-burning rituals in the southern city of Bushehr in 2006, and, lastly, the votive performances during Moharram in the digital sphere during the pandemic in 2020.

Through the study of mourning in terms of the senses in a specific historical and social context, Senses of Mourning not only shows the changing embodied dimensions of religious practices that have played an integral role in the complex lifeworld of Shi?i Iranians but also details the transformation of Moharram within the broader history of Shi?i Iran in an increasingly interconnected global era. The book's multisensory approach sheds new light on the performativity of embodied practices, in which spiritualities, materialities, and the politics of the sacred are articulated through lived performances over time.

In the nineteenth century, the Ottoman monarchy was transformed. The sultan, a remote and formidable figure of absolute power in the 1820s, was, by the 1920s recast as a modern monarch attuned to new norms of governance. In the process, the Ottoman imperial court voluntarily embraced emerging European models of so-called 'enlightened' monarchy. To explore this shift for the first time, Hakan Karateke interrogates nineteenth-century Ottoman court rituals and their layered symbolism. Following an introductory chapter that situates the Ottoman drive to modernize in the 1830s and 1840s within the wider European context, the book devotes each subsequent chapter to a distinct type of ceremony. The chapters on enthronement and the ritual of girding the sword trace these traditions from their premodern roots to their nineteenth-century adaptations. Other ceremonies examined include the celebration of the two major Muslim festivals (the Feast of Ramadan and the Feast of Sacrifice), the sultan's Friday procession to the mosque, and his receptions of guests at the imperial court. Another chapter focuses on the dynasty's veneration of sacred relics and the rituals surrounding them. Taken together, these ceremonial practices show how the court and the sultan guided the dynasty through a period of acute crisis for monarchies, when their prestige was in decline. In doing so, the Ottoman imperial court laid the foundations of a liberal empire that redefined sovereignty, reshaped governance, and transformed the very role of the monarch in a globalizing world.

It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Any study of colonial Morocco (1912-56) presents unique and compelling challenges due to the simultaneous presence in its territory of two foreign powers, France and Spain. The colonialist rivalry between these two countries formed dynamic and changing narratives of Morocco's musical cultures. Through their accounts of Morocco's musical activity and sound practices, French and Spanish musicologists gave shape to models of social organization that they wished to implant in Morocco at the expense of the local populations. But music was also an important instrument of resistance even if opposition to colonial rule meant adopting and subverting the discursive tropes and rhetorical strategies first formulated in the work of European scholars. In The Empire of the Ear: Music, Race, and the Sonic Architecture of Colonial Morocco, author Samuel Llano demonstrates that auditory culture, music, and musicology played a key role in negotiating the cultural struggles of colonialism in Morocco by helping to redraw society's ethnic and racial boundaries. Music was deeply involved in shaping a colonial rivalry between France and Spain, with both powers fighting to lead the discovery and promotion of Morocco's music, particularly the Andalusi and Amazigh repertoires. Llano further illuminates the ways in which France and Spain used music to promote markedly distinct and competing racial agendas in order to categorize and control Moroccan populations and their cultural practices. At the same time, he delves deeply into the significant roles that Moroccan and Maghrebi musicians and scholars played in fostering performance criteria and producing scholarship that challenged deep-seated European views, acting as a form of anti-colonial resistance. As he explores music's dual role as an instrument of power and resistance, Llano demonstrates that the impact of colonial rivalry on music scholarship and performance was more complex than the coloniser/colonised binary suggests. Finally, he analyzes how collaborations between Maghrebi and European scholars and musicians in transcription and performance obscured the lines between oppression and contestation, pushing resistance into a liminal space. In exploring these cultural tensions, The Empire of the Ear argues that race was the primary principle governing the performance and study of Morocco's music repertoires and the shaping of forms of identification among rural and urban populations.
