This book explores feedback analytics in assessment, which plays a vital role in learning, provides insight into learning processes, and informs educational decisions. A key component of assessment is feedback, which has been shown to have a significant impact on learning success. Feedback aims to reduce the gap between a learner's current understanding and the desired learning outcomes. Researchers have categorised feedback in different ways, taking into account factors such as the type of information provided and the timing of delivery.

Pervasive digital learning environments generate valuable data through learner interactions and beyond. While learning analytics encompasses various subfields, including assessment analytics, which focuses on assessment data, a more specific area of inquiry is needed to fully understand the role of feedback.

This area, which is defined as 'feedback analytics', focuses specifically on the analysis of feedback processes within assessments. Whereas assessment analytics examines the broader assessment data, feedback analytics delves into the nuances of feedback itself, aiming to uncover patterns in how feedback is given, received and used by learners. To realise the full potential of feedback analytics, further research is needed to thoroughly understand the data generated by feedback processes, to identify key metrics for measuring feedback effectiveness, to bridge the gap between theoretical frameworks and practical applications, to design learning environments and processes to maximise the impact of feedback, and to provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness and efficiency of different feedback strategies. This focused research agenda is addressed in this edited volume and will be crucial for optimising learning and assessment through more effective and targeted feedback interventions.

Since the 1990s, Evangelicalism has spread rapidly across Brazil, reshaping the country's religious landscape. This transformation has captured media attention across the Americas, yet few works offer a structured and theory-based account of the phenomenon.

The Economic Roots of Evangelicalism in Brazil provides a detailed and empirically grounded analysis of this expansion through the lens of microeconomic theory. Rather than attributing the rise of Evangelicalism only to its appeal among the poor, this book examines the "production technologies" of religion. The authors explore how Evangelical churches opened temples, scaled operations, and reached converts nationwide-within a regulatory environment broadly favorable to religious entrepreneurship.

Drawing on data and analysis surrounding the microeconomics of consumers and firms, the authors demonstrate how Evangelical churches developed a dynamic organizational model that positioned them at the forefront of Brazil's religious market. Bridging economics, sociology, political science, and religion, this book offers a rare interdisciplinary perspective on one of the most consequential social transformations in contemporary Latin America.

This book offers a critical examination of psychology's role in addressing today's interconnected social-ecological crises. It argues that while psychological knowledge is crucial, the discipline often falls short by focusing too narrowly on individual behavior and neglecting broader systemic issues. Through critical perspectives on Environmental Psychology, the contributors illustrate the transformative potential of psychology in facing global challenges. They propose that psychology must evolve to address the complexities of our "polycrisis"-a convergence of ecological destruction, social injustice, and economic instability. The book emphasizes the historical roots of these crises in colonialism, capitalism, and systemic inequality, which psychology has often failed to address.

Divided into four sections, the book begins by highlighting the necessary changes within psychology to tackle today's intertwined crises. It critiques the discipline's limitations and advocates for a reassessment of traditional approaches. The second section introduces decolonial and intercultural perspectives, urging the field to embrace diverse knowledge systems and confront power dynamics in research. The third section critically examines psychology's social role, encouraging it to challenge societal inequalities and environmental harm. The concluding chapters demonstrate theory in action, showcasing emancipatory projects that illustrate how psychology can support social and ecological justice in practice. By outlining practical implementations of critical environmental psychology, the book serves as a guide for how psychology can contribute meaningfully to creating a sustainable, equitable world.

This collection is a must-read for researchers, scholars, and practitioners in the environmental, social, and behavioral sciences. It offers fresh insights and practical guidance for those seeking to understand how psychology can actively contribute to building a sustainable and just world.

This is an open access title. It is available to read and download as a free PDF version on Oxford Academic and is made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 International license. In The Algorithmic City, Seth Lazar argues that Artificial Intelligence and other computing technologies have transformed the conditions under which we live together, while political philosophy has barely taken notice. To remedy this, he introduces and theorises the "Algorithmic City," the network of algorithmically-mediated social relations constituted by platforms, recommender systems, and emerging AI agents, among others. Lazar illustrates how AI-enabled tools govern this "Algorithmic City" and identifies the standards by which that novel governing power can be justified, focusing on what it is used to do, who exercises it, and how. He argues political philosophy's account of each of these standards must be updated to cater for the distinctive combination of structural and agential power that algorithmic intermediaries realise. He then applies this approach to a concrete corner of the Algorithmic City: the digital public sphere. He offers foundational, regulatory, and technical interventions that could enable justified algorithmic governance of the distribution of online attention. Based on the 2023 Stanford Tanner Lecture on AI and Human Values, The Algorithmic City consists of two essays by Lazar followed by commentaries from Renee Jorgensen, Marion Fourcade, Joshua Cohen, and Arvind Narayanan, and concludes with Lazar's reply.

This book, in tribute to the late Paul A Levine, a pioneer in the field of Holocaust history, focuses on themes identified in international research as particularly important for advances in Holocaust history and education, such as the role of 'bystanders', foreign policy and diplomacy, the role of individual actors, and Holocaust education. It aims to re-evaluate previous findings in light of new research in these areas, which were also the focal points of Levine's research.

Recent decades have shown further advances in Holocaust research in terms of new perspectives and methodologies, which have enriched and broadened our understanding. For instance, the term 'bystander' has been refined into sub-categories and has increased our understanding of how roles changed over time and in different contexts. Furthermore, local studies have nuanced our understanding, and insights about the role of distance in time and space have deepened our knowledge of rescue opportunities. In bystander countries, research has primarily focused on refugee policy and the shift from a restrictive attitude in the 1930s and the first war years to a more generous policy towards the war's end. Scholars have placed the Jewish experience at the center, and recent research has explored the formation of Holocaust memory. This volume brings together contributors to produce new research in these areas and to articulate future directions for the field.

The third edition of Latin America in Colonial Times is a thoroughly revised, argument driven textbook that details the meeting of three great civilizations on American soil in the sixteenth century. Matthew Restall and Kris Lane invite readers to engage with colonial Latin America as historians do - through interpretation, debate, and evidence, showing how colonial societies were constructed through encounter, conflict, and collaboration. The new edition has been revised and refined page by page, engaging closely with the latest and most dynamic scholarship. It models how to analyze sources, weigh competing explanations, and connect local case studies to broader historical questions. Spanning from the rise of empires in the fifteenth century to their collapse in the nineteenth, the chapters draw on the latest scholarship on Spain, Portugal, Atlantic Africa, and Latin America, with particular attention to Indigenous, African, and women's experiences.

A theological map of markets as ambiguous-and improvable-moral contexts

Do markets corrupt us, or support our character? They do both, argues Christina McRorie in The World of Markets. She engages empirical research on economic decision-making to identify both the conditions under which markets encourage selfish and opportunistic behaviors and those under which markets do the opposite, encouraging just and even generous actions. This influence over our decisions suggests that markets may also shape our agency itself, over time. How should Christians make theological sense of this?

Highlighting the tensions woven into the theological concept of "the world"-given that it is beloved by God and yet also a dangerous realm of moral darkness-The World of Markets builds a case for viewing markets as ambiguous worlds that mediate both sin and grace in our daily lives by influencing our moral agency. In light of God's own love for the world, it proposes that Christians are called to approach markets with an attitude that balances critique with appreciation and to collaborate with others to make markets more grace-filled contexts. Toward this end, The World of Markets identifies concrete ways that markets can become a world where it is easier to be good.

The Vigilance Network illuminates the actions of a group of unsung American heroes-the Black and white abolitionists who, driven fiercely by their beliefs and dogged by personal demons, fought threats, prison, and social ostracism to guide freedom seekers in the decades before the Civil War. While much of Carrie Hagen's narrative focuses on the offices of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia, located just a block away from Independence Hall, she also follows escapees on the Underground Railroad from Maryland to Ontario. Indeed, characters drive the largely unknown narratives that sit at the center of The Vigilance Network: Robert Purvis, William Still, Lucretia Mott, Hetty Reckless, William Parker, Jane Johnson, and even a brief appearance from Harriet Tubman. By following both abolitionists and escapees-who were sometimes one and the same-through the streets of Philadelphia and its suburbs, Hagen reconstructs the Vigilance Network's largely unknown role in the Underground Railroad. A fast-paced and deeply researched work of narrative nonfiction, The Vigilance Network also connects the causes of today's systemic social injustice to this deep history and reveals what can happen when people refuse to let fear or self-consciousness keep them from assisting the vulnerable.

Based on more than two decades of ethnographic engagement with the urban margins of Brazil, this book offers unique and detailed insights into the "politics of the periphery". Providing a long-term analysis of the residents of the periphery of the city of Recife and their interactions with state representatives and institutions, it contributes to a better understanding of the politics of marginalized populations around the world. Politics of the Periphery takes theorizing beyond state-oriented and Eurocentric approaches and offers scope to understand politics and the state from the urban margins, from the places where an ever-increasing part of the world's population lives. Critiquing approaches that see politics of marginalized populations as an expression of deficient citizenship, as informal politics, or as protest against the authorities, Martijn Koster shows how the politics of the periphery combines resistance with compliance as well as indifference, intertwining formal procedures and meetings with informal negotiations and exchanges.

This book weaves together political anthropology, urban studies, and development studies as it focuses on two central settings of resident-state relationships: government programs and electoral politics. In these settings, it shows how residents deal with urban development, citizen participation, police action, elections, and forms of clientelism. It highlights how their politics revolves around distrust, trust, betrayal and hope as they struggle to secure their place in the city.

The story of generations of Ojibwe women who built a thriving Indigenous home in the urban heart of Minneapolis

Minneapolis became home to White Earth Ojibwe people not through a centralized movement but through generations of determined, behind-the-scenes work by Ojibwe women. These women were organizing not in the streets, but in sewing clubs, churches, classrooms, and kitchens to bring people together and form interconnected communities. Rooted in care, tradition, and persistence, their labor laid the foundation for a thriving urban Indigenous population that continues to shape the city today.

An Ojibwe Home in the City tells the histories of Louise and Emily Peake, Winnie Jourdain, Ignatia Broker, and other Ojibwe women who endeavored to make space for Native families in South Minneapolis. From the 1930s through the 1970s, these women built institutions, secured services, and fought for culturally grounded education - all while working inside systems never intended for them. Their efforts led to the creation of vital community hubs such as the Division of Indian Work and the Minneapolis American Indian Center and helped ensure that future generations would stay connected to their culture, even in an urban setting.

Far broader than a local history, this book challenges what we think we know about Native activism in the twentieth century, shifting the focus from protest to perseverance and steady commitment. Intimate, compelling, and deeply grounded in community, An Ojibwe Home in the City is both a tribute and a revelation - an essential and personal account of how Indigenous women made a place for their people in a changing world.

A unique look at Washington's landmark hotels and its cultural history

Any large city's marquee hotels are a great barometer of its social and cultural life. Washington DC, is exceptional in this regard, because visitors-from officials, diplomats, and lobbyists to everyday tourists-are so critical to the city's essential purpose as the nation's capital. The city's hotels have also been residences for locals and have served as important social centers, hosting events ranging from weddings and concerts to inaugural balls and the White House Correspondents Dinner.

Palaces of the Public is a lively, in-depth, highly illustrated, history and architectural tour of the city's hotels, past and present. John DeFerrari explores the fascinating evolution of hostelries, from the taverns of the eighteenth century, to the boarding houses of the pre-Civil War era, to the creation of the modern hotel. Special chapters address the history of hotels for women, tourist hotels, and hotels run by and for African Americans in the days of segregation. Later chapters highlight the rise of motels in the mid-twentieth century, boutique hotels in recent years, and the impact of historic preservation on saving old hotel buildings.

Readers interested in Washington's history, architecture, and historic preservation will be drawn to this book, with its unique perspective on how the city's culture and society developed over time.

The book provides an extensive look at tools to assess language competence in child and adult multilingualism, as well as at the acquisition of particular grammatical phenomena, paying special attention to the Romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian, Catalan) as majority or heritage languages. The book explores numerous methodological possibilities to determine multilinguals' proficiency in their different L1s, such as receptive vocabulary measures, spontaneous language production and (parental) background questionnaires. The book also looks at multilinguals' development of Romance (non-)mainstream languages by examining a wide range of language assessment methods and the language-external factors that might contribute to a multilingual's linguistic competence. It provides new insights on the acquisition of Romance languages in several contexts: (i) as heritage languages in non-Romance speaking countries in Europe; (ii) as majority languages in monolingual and bilingual regions; and (iii) as school languages in bilingual education programs in Germany. The book contributes to a better understanding of multilinguals' language development, proficiency and dominance, starting in preschool, and particularly for language combinations with (at least) one Romance language. This book is intended for linguists with a special interest in Romance languages, school educators, teachers, and researchers in the field of heritage and majority languages.

Widely regarded as ancient Rome's greatest historian, Tacitus has shaped much of early modern and modern thought on Rome and its emperors. Substantial portions of his major historical works Histories and Annals, however, have not survived, depriving us of his account of crucial episodes and developments in Rome's early imperial history. This first-of-its-kind volume seeks to fill those gaps, using a range of historical and linguistic approaches to reconstruct the missing portions of Tacitus' work. The volume offers reconstructions of the fragmentary Tacitean emperors (Augustus, Caligula, Nero, Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian) and of important lost episodes such as the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem and the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.

By using the concept of incompleteness as a narrative tool, Tacitus and the Incomplete provides novel insights into what Tacitus' oeuvre might have been like if the lost books had survived, and also expands on recent work on counterfactual historiography, the influence of hindsight on historical writing, the use of prolepsis and other narrative techniques, and on the limitations of historiography in the imperial period.

Operating at the intersection of Indigenous philosophy, environmental philosophy, and value theory, Andrew Frederick Smith defends reconceptualizing settler positionality as it appears through an Indigenous ecological lens. Smith argues that kinlessness better illuminates the profound forms of want, privation, and disconnection embodied in settler subjectivities and reproduced in everyday patterns of our lives. Kinlessness does not mean being without family or lacking care for others. It designates structural and lived conditions in which relationships^-^including with designated relatives, communities, lands and waters, and other-than-human beings^-^default to being transactional, possessive, hierarchical, and extractive. These orientations are so deeply normalized within settler colonial culture, particularly in the United States, that they typically remain ambient and unseen, registered more as diffuse and misdirected anxieties than as a recognizable locus of ethical and material concern. By contrast, many Indigenous philosophical traditions center kincentric ecologies^-^extended kinship arrangements in which humans, other-than-human beings, and spiritual and abiotic entities relate as moral equals within a sphere of responsibility based on mutual care and a wealth of multigenerational knowledge. These arrangements are not only ethically generative but evolutionarily stable. They have long sustained both human and planetary flourishing, supporting societal wellbeing, resilience, and adaptability in the face of both expected and unexpected change. And they are under unending assault within settler states. Kinlessness kills, reliably and by design. At both an individual level and with respect to matters of global concern, it is a defining feature driving the ongoing devastation of Indigenous lives and lifeways for power and profit. Resisting kinlessness, vigorously and relentlessly, must be regarded as a paramount responsibility for members of settler colonial culture. This requires concerted anticolonial work directed toward facilitating Indigenous futurity^-^creatively and cooperatively envisioning and striving to engender conditions free from settler colonial structures and norms. Kinlessness is not an immutable identity. It is instead a function both of confrontable structural impediments and transformable patterns of personal decision making that occur within an expansive network of malleable relationships. For members of settler colonial culture, kinlessness may exemplify our history and saturate our present. But it need not^-^and must not^-^define our legacy.

This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to sustainability, examining the complex relationships among environmental, economic, and socio-cultural systems across a wide range of industries. Moving beyond a narrow focus on environmental protection, it emphasizes the interconnected nature of the three pillars of sustainability and the importance of balancing resource management, economic development, and social equity. As global population growth, resource scarcity, and climate change place increasing pressure on natural and human systems, sustainability has become a critical framework for decision making in both public and private sectors. This text explores how a variety of industries, such as energy, agriculture, tourism, healthcare, fashion, and policy contribute to sustainability challenges and solutions, highlighting both the opportunities and trade-offs involved in pursuing long term resilience.
Designed for graduate students from diverse academic backgrounds, this textbook integrates theoretical foundations with real-world examples, case studies, and global perspectives. It introduces key concepts such as linkages and trade-offs, demonstrating how actions in one domain can influence outcomes in others. In doing so, it encourages readers to think critically about the unintended consequences of development and the importance of interdisciplinary approaches. Ultimately, it strives to prepare future leaders to make informed, ethical decisions that support resilient communities, promote equity, and enhance quality of life for present and future generations.

This volume examines seasonal pastoralism from a diachronic perspective, with case studies that, across the volume, trace its development from the Neolithic to the twentieth century and explore the archaeological methods used to analyse these long-term processes. Bringing together recent research on landscape archaeology to study ancient pastoralism from the perspective of a great variety of academic traditions, it includes chronological specializations and methodological approaches. The work takes various approaches from the archaeology of architecture, ethnographical perspectives, new dating methods and computational analysis to identify and date seasonal pastoralism.

Study areas presented range from the Atlantic mountains of Galicia to the central Slovakian mountains, via the Cantabrian Range, the Pyrenees, and the Slovenian Alps. It provides an overview of the state of the art of the Archaeology of Pastoralism in Europe by examining unpublished data and ground-breaking research in this field. By summarizing the results of the research presented in this book, it is possible to shed light on the historical depth of agro-livestock farming ways of life in mountain areas across Mediterranean regions and other parts of Europe from the Neolithic period onwards. This volume may be of interest to archaeologists, geographers, biologists and other scholars interested in alpine environments, as well as anyone interested in the material heritage of pastoralism in rural regions.

Black Song: A Manifesto for Music and Justice centers acts of musical creation and performance that emerge from Black experiences, affirm Black humanity, and connect to Black communities. Written for scholars, performers, and music fans, the book shows that learning about Black Song and its creation is central to understanding both American music and Black American experiences. By providing a more inclusive, just, and accurate understanding of the art of Black Song, the authors disrupt and expand musical canons.

Black Song shines a spotlight on the response, resistance, and community building that occur in musical creation in Black spaces, past and present. The authors explore histories and performances across musical styles-from classical to country to hiphop to opera to jazz to gospel to many others. They offer practical advice on how to perform, research, teach, and listen to this music. As they center Black Song in American history and music, they show that this music is a valuable tool for promoting productive and healing dialogues about race, justice, and history. Encouraging empathy and understanding, Black Song shows how to approach Black music and spaces with knowledge and respect.

In the face of increasing climate disruption, this book provides a design-centered investigation of how cities might adapt, recover, and prosper. It positions resilience not as a technical add-on, but as a fundamentally social, ecological, and spatial practice that must be embedded across scales, from materials and buildings to neighbourhoods, infrastructures, and urban systems.

The chapters show how climatic threats including heat, flooding, water scarcity, and catastrophic shocks are changing our conception of urban space in a variety of worldwide situations. The contributions demonstrate how nature-based solutions, water-sensitive planning, circular construction, and regenerative urbanism are now inextricably linked to resilient design. They also show how new technologies like geographic simulation, XR environments, and digital twins are increasing the designer's ability to foresee unpredictability and test flexible solutions before putting them into practice.

The main issue addressed is evident: urban development practice still has difficulty converting resilience concepts into spatial, material, and community-grounded design activity, even in the face of increased awareness of climate risk. In response, this book compiles experimental techniques, conceptual developments, and empirical research that show how resilience may be operationalized in actual projects and locations. It focuses on transferable tactics that can influence professional practice, education, and policy, such as regenerative neighbourhood models, nature-based drainage, climate-responsive public spaces, and circular recovery.

Resilient by Design ultimately argues that the future of cities depends on re-aligning ecological systems, technological innovation, and social inclusion through design thinking. It provides an interdisciplinary knowledge base and a forward-looking agenda for shaping climate-ready urban environments. The book is intended for researchers, urban designers, architects, planners, landscape architects, and policymakers engaged in climate-resilient and sustainable urban development.
