In the mid-1990s, with the election of Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, a new era of aggressive policing began in New York City. While apparently helping lead to a decline in crime, the side effects of tactics such as stop and frisk led to powerful repercussions. A new Inspector General was appointed, the department came under federal review for racist and unconstitutional stops, and officers were required to record almost every citizen interaction. Names of individuals affected by these tactics, including Amadou Diallo, Eric Garner, and Abner Louima, among others, remain in the public consciousness. Practices such as stop and frisk in part fueled social justice movements like Black Lives Matter, and their use erodes public trust in the police, with many calling for increased scrutiny of police power, reduced police budgets, and even abolishment.

In 1930, George Riddoch, Charles Symonds, Russell Brain, Hugh Cairns, Macdonald Critchley, and Derek Denny-Brown formed the Hexagon Club with the aim of discussing over dinner developments in medical and surgical neurology. Over the next 10 years, they met on 32 occasions, sometimes with guests, and discussed 42 topics of past or emerging clinical and research interest. This book connects European private international law with decolonial theory.

Decolonial theory calls for alternative modes of producing legal knowledge - ones that give greater weight to the worldviews of formerly colonised peoples across the globe, including in Europe. At the same time, private international law has been described as a particularly suitable field for welcoming more otherness (alterite) in European law. This book therefore develops a decolonial theory of European private international law. To do so, it begins with Western court cases involving what the author terms a 'conflict of worldviews': a clash between the legal frameworks governing the dispute and the worldviews of the formerly colonised parties involved, referred to here as 'postcolonised worldviews'. Through three case studies - respectively addressing religious arbitration, Indigenous sacred land, and faith-based politics - the book demonstrates that courts routinely overlook these conflicts. As a result, the claims of formerly colonised parties are inadequately addressed. To remedy this structural discrimination within European private international law, the book proposes a pluralised theory of choice of court, foreign law, and international jurisdiction, more inclusive of the postcolonised worldviews present in the case studies.

Firstly, it examines the responsibility of all four protagonists in EU citizenship law (the individual, the home and host Member States, and the Union itself), providing a more holistic understanding of EU citizenship.
