Stacey Copeland's Lavender Sounds explores lesbian radio history and its evolution into queer feminist podcasting today, exploring the politics, aesthetics, and cultural activism embedded in queer feminist soundwork. Through deeply personal and archival explorations, Stacey Copeland traces the emergence of queer feminist soundwork-a unique blend of community-led storytelling, political resistance, and creative expression rooted in feminist and LGBTQ+ activism. At the heart of the book lies a powerful idea: sound is not just heard but felt, connecting generations through shared voices and struggles. In conversation with award-winning and cutting-edge queer and feminist podcast producers from across Canada and the U.S., Lavender Sounds invites us to turn a feminist-embodied ear to the past to uncover the ways gender, race, and sexual orientations are embedded in our everyday media listening practices. From pioneering Canadian radio shows like Vancouver's The Lesbian Show and Montreal's Dykes on Mykes to today's queer chumcasts and audio documentary, Lavender Sounds is a journey through auditory landscapes where joy, protest, intimacy, and identity intersect. This book opens a vibrant conversation about how radio and podcasting are vital tools for marginalized communities to connect, create, and claim space in the media world.

Indigenous nations shaped Alaska's destiny before-and long after-Russia or America claimed the region

Alaska's past is often told through Russian and US imperial histories. In The Great Land author Thomas Michael Swensen overturns those narratives by reconstructing Alaska's history from Indigenous perspectives, showing how Native communities forged the region's political, economic, and cultural foundations. He constructs a timeline based on Indigenous archives, oral traditions, and Native-authored sources-what he terms first space.

Beginning with Indigenous encounters with Russian expeditions in Unangan territory in the 1740s, Swensen traces how key features of modern Alaska emerged from Indigenous labor and knowledge. The book demonstrates that after being drawn into coercive relationships with the Russian American Company, Native people navigated the territory's transfer to the United States in 1867 and engaged democratic institutions to pursue citizenship and political influence by the early twentieth century.

Across more than two and a half centuries, Alaska Native communities defined the region and state's cultural and political life-from designing the state flag to leading movements that culminated in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The book details that through statehood, Cold War tensions, and the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Indigenous people articulated cultural beliefs and practices that are central to Alaska's political life.

By framing Alaska as an Indigenous homeland rather than a colonial frontier, The Great Land offers a powerful new understanding of how Native peoples shaped the modern Alaskan state.

This book traces the forgotten history of a Japanese farm settlement in the Sacramento River delta. Before the wartime removal and incarceration, most West Coast Japanese Americans, including immigrant Issei and US-born Nisei generations, resided in rural agricultural areas. Existing histories of Japanese America have often overlooked this farming aspect of their experience, focusing instead on urban narratives. Centered on the town of Walnut Grove, the "downriver" (kawashimo) settlement was home to Issei farmers, merchants, and laborers who lived alongside their Nisei children in a society characterized by strict racial segregation and landlessness. In the delta basin, a small group of white landowning settlers and corporate interests held power and wealth, shaping social relations and economic opportunities for mostly Asian immigrant settlers and fieldhands.

Combining theories of settler colonialism, racial capitalism, and immigrant transnationalism with the techniques of microhistory, Eiichiro Azuma reveals the intricate dynamics of paternalistic interdependency between white landlords and Japanese tenants, as well as the complex interethnic relations among marginalized immigrant groups in the local segregated society and agricultural economy. Through his careful analysis of heretofore overlooked immigrant vernacular sources and oral histories, Azuma sheds important light on a lesser-known aspect of rural Asian American history through the lens of multiracial entanglements on the ground.

This Element examines the relationship between mental health and religiosity from an evolutionary perspective. Drawing on psychology, anthropology, and health science, it explores the origins of religiosity and the cultural evolution of religious traditions to identify how religious beliefs, behaviors, and affiliations have influenced human psychosocial functioning over time. First, it defines the concepts of mental health and religiosity and then summarizes research on contemporary associations between them. This synthesis highlights the multidimensionality of each construct and the variability in their association across individuals and cultural contexts. Building on theory, the Element introduces a novel multilevel framework to explain how religiosity and mental health have interacted differently across evolutionary, cultural, and personal timescales. It concludes by considering applications of this evolutionary science, proposing that individuals who understand how religiosity and mental health are associated can more intentionally cultivate personal forms of religiosity that benefit, rather than hinder, well-being.

A sweeping, deeply rooted history of Harlem at the center of Black cultural, political, and intellectual life

From its earliest Indigenous inhabitants and Dutch settlers to its emergence as a global center of Black culture, Epic Harlem offers one of the most comprehensive narrative histories ever written about this storied New York neighborhood. Author, journalist, and longtime Harlem resident Herb Boyd traces the evolution of Harlem across centuries, capturing the people, movements, institutions, and cultural forces that shaped its identity and influence.

Moving beyond familiar portraits of the Harlem Renaissance, Boyd presents a full and richly layered account of the community's development: its multiethnic beginnings, its transformation into a hub of African American life, and its enduring role as a barometer of social, political, and artistic change in the United States. Legendary figures - Langston Hughes, Malcolm X, Zora Neale Hurston, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Sugar Ray Robinson, and many more - appear alongside community organizers, artists, business owners, and residents whose lives collectively tell Harlem's story.

Drawing on decades of reporting, research, and lived experience, Boyd writes with the intimacy of a neighbor and the authority of a historian. He explores Harlem's triumphs and struggles, from artistic flourishing and political activism to economic hardship, urban renewal, and contemporary debates over preservation and gentrification. Throughout, Harlem stands as both a local community and a global symbol of Black creativity, resilience, and aspiration.

Accessible and engaging while grounded in deep scholarship, Epic Harlem serves as both an essential introduction for general readers and a rich resource for scholars seeking a fuller understanding of one of the most influential communities in American history.

This edited book brings together scholars of education, sociology, philosophy, migration and political theory to examine how citizenship is made, taught and disputed in contemporary Australia. Using 'contested citizenships' as an analytical frame, the chapters map the shifting boundaries of belonging across schooling and higher education, citizenship testing and language assessment, faith-based pedagogy, labour-market regulation for older workers, and debates about moral agency in liberal democracy. Throughout, the volume shows how formal legal status intersects with lived experience, cultural identity, mobility, and processes of inclusion and exclusion, and how education functions as a microcosm of wider struggles over rights and recognition. By combining conceptual discussion with empirical and practice-oriented analyses, the book offers a nuanced account of Australian citizenship in comparative perspective for scholars and students interest in citizenship studies, political sociology, sociology of education, migration studies and public policy.

This book examines the social, cultural and economic implications of the emergence of AI for creative work. It conceptualises creativity as a form of social communication, offering a framework for understanding contemporary philosophical, political-economic, legal and policy debates regarding the impact of AI on creative work. This social approach bypasses speculation in relation to the internal states of humans and machines and, instead, focuses on how AI's prolific production is recasting how we define, distinguish and reward human creativity. It illustrates how, at the present level of AI, the metaphor of the tool is buckling, resulting in the destabilisation of normative understandings and legal frameworks forged upon this and romantic accounts of authorship. The book speculates that these destabilisations will result in new forms of creative expression and new economic models for rewarding creative work. Crucially, it argues that because machines are not fully immersed in society, their creative capacities are distinct from those of humans.

The book resists and critiques discourses of technological inevitability and warns that, without regulation, the monopolization of data will have damaging social and economic outcomes generally and in relation to creative work specifically. Aimed at academics, students, policymakers, and practitioners in creativity studies, cultural studies, computer studies and AI, this timely volume offers a unique social perspective on how AI is reframing how we understand creativity and reward creative work.

A radical rethinking of empathy's role in light of its weaponization

Justice-motivated caregivers have long viewed empathy as a central tool for addressing political division, intergenerational trauma, racism, sexism, and even evil itself. However, social theorists and scholars of religion who study the political behavior of evangelical and protestant Christians are noting new and unexpected limits for the ethics of empathy. How does one empathize with those who explicitly refuse to reciprocate empathy, who weaponize power imbalances for harmful political ends, and who dismiss all invitations to accountability as acts of intolerance? If working toward justice is what matters most, then these efforts to empathize may actually backfire against practices of political solidarity. There must a better way to work through these potential traps and work more effectively toward justice and healing.

Beyond the Empathy Trap explains why empathy limits interpersonal ethics and how justice-motivated caregivers can better prioritize their psychological investments within their work. Drawing deeply from psychoanalysis, phenomenology, philosophy of religion, and pastoral theology, Peter Capretto argues that while empathy remains an essential resource for many forms of social healing, empathy also reaches unavoidable impasses when social injustice targets identity itself. By translating insights from the psychology of religion into high-stakes conflict settings, Capretto's analysis offers the practical payoff of unmasking how political actors with asymmetric power relations frequently exploit the idea of empathic reciprocity as a trap to disarm caregivers and activists in their practices of solidarity.

This Element explores how waste and food leftovers were transformed into evidence of the natural and human past, valuable collector's items, and museum specimens. In the nineteenth century, rubbish pits became repositories of new sources for studying the non-written past. The following pages connect the history of nineteenth-century waste with prehistoric archaeology, the reutilization of refuse and the excavation of ancient rubbish dumps. Waste and trash are not trans-historic categories. Here, 'waste' refers to a broad range of results of human activity: from deliberately constructed rubbish tips for unwanted items, to less organized discards in lake dwellings and peat bogs, and large-scale management of urban waste that reshaped landscapes. Recycling did not begin in the nineteenth century, but new considerations about reuse and the growing scale of waste disposal provided palaeontologists and archaeologists with fresh lines of enquiry and a framework for addressing the problem of modern extinctions.

In this groundbreaking history, Amy Kerner explores the critical role of the Yiddish language in defining ethnicity and belonging for Argentina's Jewish diaspora, the largest in Latin America. Jews came to Argentina's provinces and growing cities as immigrants and refugees from Europe beginning in the late nineteenth century. Although Jewish immigrants were multilingual, they nevertheless gave Yiddish a central place in Jewish Argentine culture for over a century. Kerner elucidates how the longstanding influence of Yiddish culture in Argentine Jewish life resulted from national migration policies, urban modernity, populism, and the alliance of Yiddish speakers with Argentine anti-fascism. In turn, Jewish Argentines used Yiddish to document, debate, and respond to events on local and global scales, including the Holocaust, Israeli Zionism, and Latin American state terror.

Drawing on extensive archival research, Kerner argues that Jewish Argentines used Yiddish to navigate changing political ideologies and ethnic boundaries across a century of Jewish Argentine history. Untangling the complex interplay of transnational and local politics in shaping the uses and meanings of Yiddish, Language in Transit offers fresh insights for the histories of Jewish culture and language in Argentina and Latin America.

The United States-Mexico border has been a contested space and a political and ideological apparatus since the early twentieth century. While today we think of the border as a method to exclude people from the United States, the earliest curfews at the line between the two countries were designed to keep Americans within their territorial boundaries and reinforce the moral geography of the United States.

In Moral Divide Catherine Christensen Gwin sheds new light on a largely forgotten chapter in the history of the U.S.-Mexico border, when it was a place of agency among Euro-American clubwomen reformers and sex workers. White women in California's Progressive movement sowed panic over prostitution, pushing American sex workers into the vice districts of Mexico, where American pleasure seekers followed. In response, clubwomen initiated a crusade to control U.S. citizens and their pursuit of illicit leisure in Mexico. These ideals of morality were used to enforce border restrictions and developed stereotypes of Mexicans as rapists and traffickers. Christensen Gwin brings the Mexican perspective on vice tourism to the fore, showing how Mexican officials responded to the sex trade, while also discussing the invention and juxtaposition of the white human trafficking victim and the criminal drug trafficking woman. The "moral divide" that resulted from these gendered and racialized politics of national purification set the stage for the exclusionary border regime we live with today.

This book presents an exploration of the methodologies and theoretical frameworks involved in the analysis of commingled human remains, featuring twelve case studies (plus an introduction and conclusion) that highlight the complexities of these assemblages. Both intentional and unintentional commingling present significant challenges and opportunities within bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology, making this topic increasingly relevant in contemporary research.

Building on previous works, Commingled and Disarticulated Human Remains (2014) and Theoretical Approaches to Analysis and Interpretation of Commingled Human Remains (2016) (both published with Springer), this updated work serves as a critical resource for scholars, offering insights into the application of methodologies and theoretical models explored in earlier volumes. The case studies not only reflect current practices but also project future directions for the analysis of commingled remains over the next decade. This book, like those that came before it on this topic, will be an excellent reference for researchers and practitioners seeking to deepen their understanding of the intricacies of commingled remains and their implications in both academic and applied settings.

Design Innovation for Climate-Resilient Built Environments offers a multidisciplinary exploration of how the built environment can adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Bringing together perspectives from architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, urban planning, real estate, and construction management, the book adopts an integrated lens that examines innovation across multiple spatial scales, from cities and regions to streets, buildings, and communities. By bridging these disciplines, it challenges the traditional silos that often shape the planning, design, and management of built environments

The book begins from a simple observation: cities and buildings have always been influenced by climate. Long before the language of climate resilience emerged in contemporary policy debates, societies developed spatial strategies to cope with heat, wind, water, and seasonal variability. Drawing from this long history of environmental adaptation, the book asks how design intelligence can guide architecture and urban form in an era of accelerating climate uncertainty.

The first part, "Design Intelligence for Climate-Resilient Architecture and Urban Form," presents resilience as a design mindset shaped by vernacular knowledge, ecological thinking, and contemporary architectural innovation, aiming to create adaptive and responsive built environments. The second part, "Technological, Infrastructural, and Systemic Pathways to Climate Resilience," shifts attention to the systems that enable resilience at scale, exploring how technologies, infrastructures, and planning frameworks support climate-responsive cities. Together, these perspectives position the book as both a conceptual guide and a practical roadmap for advancing climate-resilient design and urban development.

The literature has highlighted the tensions between democracy and anti-corruption efforts, considering their changing meanings over time. These debates have been traversed by understandings of how to ensure appropriate connections between the public and the private, bearing in mind some of their alternative meanings (e.g., for the public as the state, the commons, manifest or impersonal- reasonable interests). Colombia faced these debates at two critical junctures, which led Congress to pass party and anti-corruption laws in both time periods. To contribute to the understanding of these puzzling tensions, the research aimed to solve the following question: Why did Colombian legislators understand some public-private relations as adequate for Colombian democracy, while others as corrupt in the approval of the 1992-1995 and 2010-2011 party and anti-corruption laws, and why did these understandings change? Solving this question required consulting the literature that has addressed the discussion points on democratization, corruption and the public-private. This, in order to guide the diachronic comparison. The sampling material was composed by the transcription of the debates in Congress that ended in the approval of the mentioned laws, following a qualitative content analysis. It was observed that the congresspeople tended to modify their emphasis of the democratic and non-corrupt: from the protection of the common to the impersonal-reasonable interests.

We know a great deal about the history of slavery and its abolition in Europe and the Americas. But what does this history look like in Africa? What forms of slavery existed on the continent in the nineteenth century? How did African anti-slavery strategies contribute to the abolition of slavery in different African regions and localities, and to international abolitionism? Through illuminating case studies from across the continent, Benedetta Rossi traces the history of slavery in Africa from the age of global abolition through to the colonial period and up to the present day. In doing so, Rossi demonstrates that abolition in Africa was never simply a foreign agenda. This book makes a compelling argument for the re-centring of the history of slavery and abolition around African ideas, institutions and actors, and for acknowledging the integral role of Africans in global abolitionist movements. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Syphilis had existed in Ottoman society since the sixteenth century, but it became an alarming public health problem in the nineteenth century. As the epidemic raged with population movements across provincial and imperial borders, Ottoman authorities mobilized medical staff and implemented public hygiene regulations. Secil Yilmaz unravels how a disease long associated with shame and secrecy became a key site through which Ottomans expanded their hegemony and governance, situating medicine and sex at the center of imperial rule.

Anatomy of Empire reveals the multifaceted implications of biopolitics found in the encounters and negotiations among the diseased, sex workers, working-class men, and physicians within a complex imperial bureaucracy. Medical knowledge and practices became effective tools to govern and discipline a population, particularly as Ottoman physicians formulated vernacular forms of sexology that re-fashioned love, desire, and marriage. As syphilis persisted across the world, Ottomans joined their European counterparts in pursuit of bacteriological discoveries to understand the causes behind the resilience of this silent yet destructive disease. With this book, Yilmaz offers a history of gender, sexuality, and medicine, one set in a consequential geography - in the lands of Ottomans at the verge of their demise - and unearths how truth regimes pertaining to the body and sexuality are indispensable components of modern imperial governance.

As workloads and work responsibilities continue to increase, assessment often causes teachers anxiety. Rubrics: What Every Teacher Needs to Know is a handbook that combines theory and pragmatism in clear language to help pre- and in-service teachers and teacher trainers obtain assessment information quickly and efficiently. While many teachers do not realize that creating an assignment is creating an assessment, they should go hand in hand. This book highlights both the value of rubrics and the value of assessment literacy, which is the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to create, administer, and understand the results of assessments to improve student learning.

Rubrics provides new and experienced teachers with the tools to become more transparent assessors of their students' writing, reading, listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary. Deborah Crusan and Robyn Brinks Lockwood bring their expertise in assessment and English for academic purposes to address the challenges teachers face in writing clear assignments and grading them fairly. They emphasize that teachers need to think about what they want their students to be able to do, clarify their expectations to their students, and convey those expectations on a rubric/scoring guide. While transparent, step-by-step instructions are included in the book to help teachers create their own assignments and assessments, the appendix materials containing ready-made assignments and their accompanying rubrics will be sure to delight busy teachers.

A novel approach to the study of the past has been crystallizing in the last decade. Its practitioners are revisiting themes as varied as war, race, and trade by focusing on state and non-state relationships between actors from several empires, as opposed to studying empires in isolation. Just as nation-state studies have been balanced by global and transnational histories, transimperial history is now transforming the history of empires. This is the first book-length introduction to the fast-growing sub-field. Combining conceptual reflections with a historiographic state of the art, it bears on relations across empires around the modern world, from Africa and Asia to Europe and the Americas. Covering both societal and governmental actors, and arguing that power differences and their negotiations are central to transimperial relations, this work presents a comprehensive framework for doing modern transimperial history. It argues that this field has multiple genealogies, including global history, early modern connected history, and what one could call revisionist methodological imperialism. It identifies four overlapping facets of transimperial relationships: coexistence, intervention/counter-intervention, cooperation, and competition. It reflects on how imperial actors made historical and contemporary comparisons to construct identities and legitimize power. A chapter on power in and across empires offers reflections on despotic, infrastructural, bio-power, framing power, and counter-power. In chapters on spaces and times, the book analyses spatial fixity and/versus mobility and reflects on transimperial infrastructures, places, borderlands, and maritime spaces; explores how empires helped drive and exhibited multiple competing temporalities; and argues that a truly interconnected transimperial world crystallized around the 1860s/70s. A final chapter, on methods, explains why transimperial history requires strategic navigation of multiple historiographies, linguistic competencies, and sources. The book concludes that its scholarly interest aside, transimperial history is timely: it helps us reflect on our emerging multipolar world. Based on more than two decades of ethnographic engagement with the urban margins of Brazil, this book offers unique and detailed insights into the "politics of the periphery". Providing a long-term analysis of the residents of the periphery of the city of Recife and their interactions with state representatives and institutions, it contributes to a better understanding of the politics of marginalized populations around the world. Politics of the Periphery takes theorizing beyond state-oriented and Eurocentric approaches and offers scope to understand politics and the state from the urban margins, from the places where an ever-increasing part of the world's population lives. Critiquing approaches that see politics of marginalized populations as an expression of deficient citizenship, as informal politics, or as protest against the authorities, Martijn Koster shows how the politics of the periphery combines resistance with compliance as well as indifference, intertwining formal procedures and meetings with informal negotiations and exchanges.

This book weaves together political anthropology, urban studies, and development studies as it focuses on two central settings of resident-state relationships: government programs and electoral politics. In these settings, it shows how residents deal with urban development, citizen participation, police action, elections, and forms of clientelism. It highlights how their politics revolves around distrust, trust, betrayal and hope as they struggle to secure their place in the city.

This book explores climate change education practices characterized by diversifying the usual avenues of academic transfer to have a greater and more relevant impact on the social contexts to which people belong. The educational initiatives showcased in the various chapters address climate change education from a socio-critical perspective, with approaches that are more ambitious than just sustainable development. This book provides researchers basic and applied knowledge on the social, educational, and communicative dimensions of climate change, and brings new ideas to the research community that question the hegemonic approach of sustainable development. Additionally, public institutions, cooperatives, and other entities involved in climate change research, social action, and education will find the initiatives showcased in the book of practical interest.

This edited volume examines recent trends towards more global and transnational research within the field of the history of science, technology, and medicine. It focuses on three major themes which are especially important to this shift in perspective: firstly, the analysis of local/global relationships; secondly, the back-and-forth movement across borders involving encounters and exchanges; and thirdly, the significance of historical actors who played a crucial role as go-betweens-especially between Europe and other regions of the world. Distinct in its breadth, this volume offers insights into a range of topics drawn from the history of science, technology, and medicine from approximately 1760 to the present.

This book examines the incompatibility of Western democratic models within African socio-political contexts. The book explores historical, cultural, and structural factors that make the wholesale adoption of Western democracy problematic for African nations. It argues that democracy, as practiced in the West, often overlooks indigenous governance systems and traditional values, leading to political instability and governance failures. The work proposes alternative frameworks rooted in African realities, aiming to foster sustainable governance and development. This book's focus is on whether Western liberal democracy is fundamentally incompatible with the historical, sociocultural, and cultural conditions of Africa. Critics contend that Africa's community ethos and spiritual traditions are incompatible with Western democracy's emphasis on individualism, adversarial politics, and secularism.
