This book examines how environmental problems and solutions are intertwined with cultural meanings, power relations and inequality. It highlights the essential role played by environmental sociology in understanding the social dynamics that create opportunities and barriers to sustainability and wellbeing.

Exploring key debates such as whether capitalism can ever be sustainable, the book underscores why ecological challenges are also questions of justice and equity. Drawing on a broad range of empirical examples from across the Global North and South, chapters highlight how responses to environmental crises vary across regions and the need for solutions to embrace diverse perspectives. The authors conclude that building sustainable futures requires more than technological fixes or incremental change: it demands social transformation, inclusive governance and critical reflection on the systems driving environmental harm.

Linking theory and practical insights, Understanding Environmental Sociology is an essential resource for scholars and students of environmental sociology, environmental governance, and environmental studies more widely. Policymakers and public administrators in sustainable development will similarly benefit from its timely recommendations.

The second edition of Freedom recovers the concept as a fundamental aspect of modern Western ideas and explores its history and how controversial its meaning can be. To what extent does freedom have a 'social' component, and how is it being reshaped by our dominant consumer society?

Today, the West sees itself as having a crucial role to play in exporting freedom into the far regions of the world - but our own freedom seems more under threat than ever. Linking ideas of public and personal freedom, Stevenson explores complaints about 'big brother', the arrival of the business society and the erosion of democracy to show how our freedoms are far from secure. Through the analysis of several distinctive philosophical traditions that have raised concerns about freedom, as well as a range of critical thinkers and perspectives, Stevenson seeks to affirm the importance of freedom, providing a compelling argument for linking it to other values such as equality and responsibility, and raise the question about what freedom will come to mean in the future, in a world that seems increasingly fragile, uncertain, and insecure.

Drawing upon a range of critical thinkers and perspectives, this book represents a wake-up call to all those who thought our basic ideas of freedom were settled.

River Space in Contemporary Chinese Cinema examines how filmmakers use river imagery to explore themes of home, displacement, and belonging in an era of rapid modernization.

Using the term "river space" to describe geographical areas created by rivers or existing alongside them, the author shows how these areas figure in films as alternative, oppositional, or contradictory sites. The book is divided into four parts, discussing waterscape in Chinese cinema, homesickness and homelessness, rivers in the urban space, and a final comparative reading of Chinese, international, and Hollywood homecoming narratives. Bridging ecocriticism with spatial theories, she explores how rivers function as sites of moral reflection and ethical commitment, offering viewers alternative frameworks for understanding locality, homesickness, and the meaning of home in contemporary globalized society.

This book will be particularly appealing to scholars and students of Chinese cinema, East Asian studies, ecocinema, migration, and cultural studies.

This multidisciplinary Handbook examines intra- and international migration in small towns and rural areas. Leading scholars outline the causes, processes, and consequences of migration beyond metropolitan hubs and large cities, presenting cutting-edge theoretical analysis and empirical research.

Experts adopt an interpretive approach to contextualise migration within social, economic, and political transformations of small towns and rural regions. They assess case studies to reflect on the perspectives of local societies through their responses to migration-based challenges. Chapters demonstrate how different contexts uniquely shape global forces and emphasise the active role of both native and newcomer populations in influencing the future of their communities, despite facing numerous constraints. The Handbook also highlights the methodological challenges of studying migration in small towns and rural areas, and considers future directions for research.

Scholars and students of migration studies, sociology, geography, politics, and public policy will greatly benefit from the novel insights explored in this Handbook. It is also an essential resource for academics in urban and regional studies, anthropology, and political science.

Artists and Intellectuals in Exile in 1970s West Berlin explores how displacement and exile became catalysts for artistic and intellectual innovation during a pivotal period in European cultural history.

Drawing on extensive archival research, fieldwork, and interviews, the book examines how exiled and migrant artists - including Guenter Brus, Romy Haag, Anne Jud, Marwan Kassab-Bachi and Akbar Behkalam - transformed the divided city of West Berlin into a crucible of creative resistance. Blending art history, urban studies, feminist and queer theory and migration scholarship, the book develops a new understanding of exile as a creative condition - a mode of living and making that redefines belonging, identity and the politics of space. Through close readings of performance, painting, film and collective practices, it reveals how marginality and dislocation generated new aesthetic forms and transnational solidarities.

Artists and Intellectuals in Exile in 1970s West Berlin will be of interest to postgraduate and undergraduate students in art, cultural and migration studies, as well as general readers interested in Berlin's cultural history.

This book critically examines the intersection of gender, governance, and urban mobility through the lens of transit systems in postcolonial and developing countries. Drawing on postcolonial feminist and intersectional theories, it analyses how historical legacies, socio-economic structures, and systemic inequalities have shaped the governance and accessibility of urban transit systems, disproportionately marginalising women. It highlights the compounded challenges women encounter in navigating these systems, including safety, affordability, and representation, whilst also identifying opportunities for their empowerment as stakeholders and decision-makers in governance and shareholding. Through examples from Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi, and Dar es Salaam in Africa; Lahore, Jakarta, and Delhi in Asia; and Bogota, Santiago, and Curitiba in Latin America, the book offers actionable insights for policymakers and urban planners. It will be of interest to researchers, students, and faculty in interdisciplinary fields such as gender studies, public administration, feminist studies, international relations, and urban planning.

This edited volume explores the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the film and audiovisual media industries.

Up to now, discussion of this topic has largely dwelled on a few discrete topics, such as the representations of AI in cinematic history or the generation of photorealistic images of de-aged or dead actors. The thrust of this book is to demonstrate how AI now plays a role in each and every stage of the value chain, from development and scriptwriting to editing workflows, post-production special effects, and audience engagement. Uniquely, this collection establishes a comprehensive understanding of AI's role with not only cutting-edge original academic research but also practitioner interviews and industry insights from diverse global perspectives. Chapters closely examine case studies of how AI is influencing scriptwriting, storytelling, visual effects, music scoring, and how these tools are also changing film distribution, programming, marketing, and the viewer experience. Key overarching themes include how AI is both augmenting and constraining human creativity, the ethical and socio-cultural implications of AI across the film and media value chain, and the potential biases inherent in AI-generated content.

This volume is an essential resource for researchers, students, practitioners, and policymakers, offering a nuanced perspective on the emergence and integration of AI in the audiovisual sector and its implications for the future of creative media production.

In an age where social media platforms structure the very conditions of visibility, this book investigates how LGBTQ lives are made, managed, and sometimes erased by algorithmic infrastructures.

Bringing together voices from across the Global South and diasporic communities, this interdisciplinary volume examines how queer and trans individuals navigate digital platforms as spaces of expression, surveillance, resistance, and survival. Spanning geographies from Bangladesh to China, and Pakistan to the Philippines, contributors explore the affective, political, and economic entanglements of platformed queer life. The chapters interrogate how algorithms sort content, how visibility becomes conditional, and how queer resistance emerges not only through representation, but through subversion, invisibility, memory work, and infrastructural reappropriation. Foregrounding intersectionality, decolonial critique, and transnational feminist and queer theory, this collection reframes digital life not as a neutral terrain, but as one where queerness is contested, commodified, and continuously reimagined. This book is both an urgent critique of platform capitalism and a testament to queer world-building amid precarity and constraint.

A timely exploration of the algorithmic, economic, and socio-technical undercurrents that shape queer lives online, this book will be of interest to students, researchers, and academics working in the areas of queer media, global digital culture, critical platform studies, and media and activism.

Based upon a close reading of the foundational works of Georg Simmel, Max Weber and the Frankfurt School as well as underexplored other works, Karner critically maps the conceptual approaches and theoretical insights of the German language sociological tradition onto various twenty-first-century social and political issues.

Karner demonstrates that a revisiting of classical German-language sociology, combined with a critical engagement with more recent and current contributions, offers vital insights for a globally oriented political sociology for the present and future. In doing so, this book critically interrogates definitions of "the social", questions of power, public spheres, cultural meanings, the historical particularities of the present, and sociologists' public roles and responsibilities.

This book will be of interest to students and scholars in the humanities and social sciences with an interest in classical social theory and political sociology.

This book delves into the intricate relationship between climate change, urbanisation, political attitudes, and spatial inequities, examining how these elements collectively shape vulnerability in cities. This comprehensive book, structured across ten chapters and three core themes (public perception, urban exposure, and methodological innovation) presents an integrated framework that unifies social science, spatial analysis, and data science. Unlike narrower approaches, it bridges the gap between technical metrics and social responses to urban climate challenges.

The book explores how political worldviews influence climate risk perception and how peri-urbanisation intensifies vulnerability, particularly focusing on the disproportionate impact of heat in rapidly expanding cities. It reveals that while public awareness of climate change is present, a significant gap exists between awareness and individual action, with calls for more effective government responses and integrated climate strategies. It also highlights how advanced technologies like AI, machine learning, and remote sensing are transforming the assessment and visualisation of urban climate risks. Specifically, it demonstrates how remote sensing quantifies the intensification of climate change due to urban greenfield expansion, revealing ecosystem loss and increased emissions, especially in peri-urban areas. This underscores the need for policies prioritising ecosystem protection for climate mitigation. Furthermore, the book provides a bibliometric review of urban heat vulnerability research, showcasing its rapid growth and evolution across diverse fields such as urban planning, environmental dynamics, public health, climatology, and remote sensing. It notes a crucial shift towards human-centred approaches and advocates for integrated policies to effectively manage escalating urban heat risks.

This book is an indispensable resource for practitioners in the field, including city government officials, policymakers, urban planners, and consultants. It can also be used as a reference for researchers and university students in urban studies.

The book is structured around three key themes: AI for climate adaptation, green infrastructure and design innovation, and policy and planning perspectives. It delves into how intelligent technologies like remote sensing, real-time monitoring, and machine learning are revolutionising the assessment and management of urban microclimate risks. Specific applications include enhancing urban resilience through hyperlocal weather alert systems and analysing the influence of vegetation and building distribution on urban heat for better mitigation. The book further examines how nature-based interventions, such as AI-optimised vegetation strategies and cooling infrastructure, can create thermally comfortable and ecologically robust urban environments. It highlights the growing intersection of AI and green infrastructure in climate adaptation and urban sustainability. Beyond technology and design, the author focuses on governance and policy frameworks, exploring how institutional arrangements and planning paradigms can translate digital and design solutions into equitable and effective climate action. It investigates how climate action is reflected in local urban planning, drawing insights from cities committed to global climate agreements. By integrating computational tools, bioclimatic design, and multilevel governance, the book provides a holistic framework for addressing urban heat challenges.

It is an essential resource for urban planners, climate researchers, and policymakers seeking forward-looking, inclusive, and technologically informed strategies for building heat-ready cities in a warming world.

In this book, Stathis Psillos and Thodoris Dimitrakos explore the question: how is empirical, and in particular scientific, knowledge possible? Most philosophers have accepted that some restrictions must be placed on empirical knowledge in order for it to be possible. Yet considerable debate has revolved around the precise nature of such restrictions, above all how knowledge can be said to be a priori.

The book traces the development of the concept of the a priori in the philosophy of science, beginning with the Descartes-Newton controversy. The discussion then turns to Leibniz and Hume, Kant's conception of synthetic a priori principles, and Mill's radical empiricism, which sought to eliminate the a priori altogether. The book also examines later transformations of the debate, including the emergence of non-Euclidean geometries and their challenge to the Kantian view, Poincare's conventionalism, the development of the relativised a priori within logical positivism, and the Quine-Carnap debate over analyticity.

Building on these historical and philosophical discussions, the authors develop and defend a novel functional conception of the a priori - captured by the idea that "the a priori is as the a priori does"-according to which a priori principles are those that play a constitutive role in scientific theorising while remaining open to revision.

An engaging and wide-ranging philosophical investigation of the a priori, this book will be of great interest to students and researchers in philosophy of science, metaphysics, epistemology and the history of the philosophy of science.

This book explores the concept of leisure through the lens of colour, offering a fresh and innovative perspective on how chromatic elements shape our understanding of health, wellbeing, and environmental ethics. By focusing on the material and symbolic significance of hues, particularly blue, green, and grey, the book delves into the ways these colours influence leisure spaces and activities. From children's play to surfing in artificial wave pools and skateboarding, the chapters examine diverse leisure practices across locations such as the UK, Russia, Turkey, East Asia, and North America. The book also challenges the traditional focus on blue and green spaces by highlighting the potential of grey spaces-urban environments like city streets, rooftops, and industrial landscapes-as sites of healthy and meaningful leisure.

Through 15 chapters based on original empirical research, this book introduces the nascent field of chromatic leisure, offering new conceptual frameworks that add depth and nuance to leisure scholarship. It critically examines how grey spaces, often overlooked in health and well-being discourse, provide alternative ways to frame leisure, embracing ambiguity, hybridity, and complexity. This book is essential reading for students, scholars and policymakers in leisure studies, social geography, urbanism, and health and well-being research.

The chapters in this book were originally published in Leisure Studies and are now accompanied by three new chapters and an updated introduction.

Gloria Steinem: The Unlikely Development of an American Feminist Icon examines how one of the most prominent feminists in the United States emerged from an atypical background to become a defining voice of the Women's Liberation Movement.

Drawing on psychological theories of adult attachment, generation, and feminist identity development, this book analyzes Steinem's unconventional childhood, her early experiences of autonomy, and the societal expectations she resisted as a young adult. Using primary and secondary sources, the book traces how Steinem's rejection of traditional roles positioned her to respond powerfully to a movement that was itself challenging the inevitability of prescribed futures for women. By integrating psychological frameworks with Steinem's lived history, the book illuminates why someone with much to gain from traditional norms instead became a transformative public feminist.

This accessible psychological biography is ideal for undergraduates and postgraduates in psychology, gender studies, politics, and the social sciences, as well as readers interested in feminist history and political socialization.

This book explores how young adult migrants in Scotland navigate everyday life through processes of ontological security-seeking, revealing how identity is negotiated in relation to experiences of uncertainty, perceived difference, and political narrative.

Drawing on narrative interviews and creative arts methods, it builds a counter-archive of lived experience to examine how macro-narratives of Scottish distinctiveness shape, stabilise, and limit migrant belonging. This book identifies four key coping mechanisms: minimising racism, performing the "good migrant," adopting Scottish signifiers, and negotiating biographical self-narratives. It shows how these operate as forms of narrative affirmation. By returning to the micro-level foundations of ontological security theory, it reconceptualises security as cyclical, fragile, and dependent on interpretive labour rather than as a fixed and stable end state.

Situated at the intersection of migration studies, political sociology, identity studies, and security studies, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of international relations, human geography, nationalism studies, and critical migration research. It will also appeal to those engaged in debates on belonging, minority rights, and the politics of everyday life in contemporary Europe.

This timely book deepens understanding of the intersection between engaged anthropology and the decolonial turn. It explores the meaning of a reinvigorated decolonial gaze for engaged anthropological practice, and assembles leading interdisciplinary experts to assess colonialism in its many contemporary forms.

Contributors highlight the value of prioritising practice-based conversations and avoiding the pitfalls of reductive narratives, whether narrowly defined as colonial or positioned as pioneering the decolonial turn. They demonstrate how engaged anthropology involves deep reflexivity both in terms of everyday practice and the remaking of more equitable relationships. Chapters investigate key themes surrounding decolonisation, such as strategies, feminist research as collaborative education, awareness and funding structures, presenting a fluid and non-hierarchical approach to the practice of decolonial anthropology.

Innovative in content and scope, Decolonial Engagements in Anthropology is an essential resource for scholars and students of anthropology, postcolonial studies, museum studies and related social science disciplines. NGO policymakers and activists will likewise benefit from its astute analysis and broad scope.

Through the concept of "intimate violence," this book provides a critical account of violence as a means of mediating social relations and articulating the transformations of neoliberal modernity. It offers a detailed analysis of the simulated acts of violence, with particular attention to mise-en-scene, and explores their broader political and philosophical implications. This volume critiques the ubiquity of violence in commercial media and its role in shaping neoliberal sociality and personhood.

The Intimate Violence of South Korean and Japanese Cinema is essential reading for students and scholars of East Asian cinema, film and media studies, cultural studies, and political economy, as well as general readers interested in the topic.

Technologies of Discontinuation examines how governments and other decision-makers can manage the phase-out of unsustainable technologies and systems. Providing helpful strategies and pathways, expert authors shed light on how the discontinuation of an incumbent regime can be governed in practice.

Employing comparative case studies, the authors identify recurring patterns, strategies and challenges in discontinuation processes. While innovation policy often focuses on supporting new solutions, they argue that effective transformation also requires deliberately ending harmful or obsolete socio-technical regimes. Chapters demonstrate how political leadership, regulatory frameworks and stakeholder mobilisation shape outcomes, and highlight how resistance and setbacks can be managed. The book concludes by emphasizing that discontinuation is not accidental or market-driven, but a governable process.

Scholars and students of science and technology studies, and innovation will find the insights into sustainable transitions and transformative innovation policy invaluable. Policymakers and practitioners seeking to design credible transition strategies will also benefit from this comprehensive guide.

In light of the recent rise of virtuality, this thought-provoking book seeks to improve awareness in a climate of general confusion. Gerald Cupchik and Andrea Carraro survey a landscape of increasing digital distance to argue for a return of human agency over machines.

Cupchik and Carraro explore how humans have always used the virtual to convey thoughts, invoke the presence of something that does not exist, or bring order to an otherwise incomprehensible world. The authors analyse why meeting in person seems to have become a waste of time and energy, why knowing how to smell and touch has become increasingly marginal, and why perpetually distal relationships have regressed the abilities that anchor humans to reality. Adopting a constructivist approach, the book centralises the human perspective and proposes a guiding principle: that behind every tool there must be a hand, and never vice versa.

Emotion and Virtual Reality is a vital resource for scholars and students of psychology, anthropology, innovation and technology, as well as disruptive technologies. Regulators in the field and cyberpsychologists will also benefit from its conceptual lens and novel ethical framework.

This fresh study of Max Weber demonstrates the ongoing strength and importance of Weber's understanding of our social existence.

Original in its interpretation, Why Should We Still Read Max Weber? serves as a clear, accessible introduction to the social theory of one of the towering intellects of our age. The author guides the reader across the incomparable range of Weber's analysis of modernity - through impersonal capitalism, the bureaucratic state, the disenchanted universe of science and then onto the potentially ecstatic experiences of art and erotic love. All the while Weber's acute awareness of the complex place of religion is on display.

Undergraduate students in sociology, social theory and philosophy will find this book directly useful in their studies, but it also serves as an entry point into Weber's theory for any reader with an interest in what intellectual reason has to offer on the social world around them.
