Egyptology saw its birth as a science during the latter part of the nineteenth century, even though Westerners had been traveling there for millennia. These volumes will present several foundational texts of the discipline in this crucial century, showing throughout each volume the slow, and not quite complete, shift from an amateur pursuit to a professional field of study. In doing so this collection demonstrates that the timeline and specifics of the professionalization of science in the nineteenth century was often discipline specific. Yet, the collection also shows that there was a lot more at stake in this history than a story of gradually becoming a science. Long before the institutionalization of Egyptology, there were Western people traveling to Egypt for various reasons and collecting artefacts to send or take home. This collection will highlight and interrogate the foundational texts that made up the early years of the discipline, travel writings, issues on collecting Egypt, and Egypt's place in fiction.

In this innovative book, Mike Chasar forwards a theory for how we read, hear, and understand popular music lyrics on their own, in relation to each other, and in relation to the poetic tradition that they inherit, revitalize, and push into new expressive quarters.

When Guns N' Roses lead singer Axl Rose belts out the series of "ohs" in the chorus from one of the band's most famous songs-"Whoa, oh, oh, oh, sweet child o' mine"-exactly what sort of poetic work is going on? When Freddie Mercury sings "Mama, oooh, didn't mean to make you cry" on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," what does that "oooh" accomplish? We all know the pleasure of unpacking the content of the songs we love, and Guns N' Roses, Rock & Roll, and the Sounds of the Lyric Tradition deepens that pleasure by exploring some of pop music's most common yet possibly most obscure verbal pyrotechnics-sounds like "oh" and "oooh" that have no dictionary meaning but that nevertheless activate a broader set of poetic strategies and concerns that end up linking modern song lyrics to the lyric expressions of Shakespeare, Shelley, and Keats.

Chasar traces the thread connecting centuries of poetic tradition, contextualizing Guns N' Roses alongside songs by Bowie, Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Dylan, and more. This illuminating and engaging book is an essential read for scholars and students of poetry, popular music, and popular culture, as well as for fans seeking deeper insight into their favorite songs.

As screen scholars and practitioners grapple with growing expectations for onscreen diversity, this book examines how such expectations manifest through hidden production processes for queer stories in Australian scripted television.

Through analysis of 18 original interviews with Australian television industry professionals, along with political-economic, content, and textual analysis of queer television content from 2011-2021, this book demonstrates how Australian television's once-pervasive industry perceptions that queer stories would not appeal to broad audiences changed throughout the decade. It traces the lifecycle of scripted television projects across all stages of television production from development to distribution. This book examines how queer representations are negotiated by creatives and executives for distribution through mainstream television networks. While recent Australian hits, such as Heartbreak High (Netflix) and Deadloch (Amazon Prime Video) appear to support the common belief that streaming is driving onscreen diversity, this book reveals how the reality in Australia is much more interesting and complex. With a small and highly regulated television distribution market, a low uptake of cable, and a high proportion of public funding, Australia saw a boom of queer stories appearing in its television drama from 2011, four years before streaming entered the market.

This book is for screen scholars and industry practitioners, alike. It illuminates how Australia's television industry has changed in relation to queer stories appearing onscreen. Screen scholars will gain a deeper understanding of the industrial influences on diverse textual representations. New, emerging and established screen practitioners will develop new insights into how diverse stories are negotiated through the stages of production.

Screen Encounters with Britain explores how global streaming platforms are reshaping viewing patterns and audience encounters, using the circulation, consumption and reception of British films and TV shows in European markets as a case study.

Focusing on young audiences in Denmark, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, the book provides original audience insights drawing on a wide range of methods, including a survey, digital diaries and interviews and offers a critical perspective on the evolving nature of young audiences' engagement with longform screen content. The evidence presented points towards re-asserted Anglo-American dominance, driven by the power of large US-owned platforms and English as the language of advantage. Building on these findings, the book challenges established theory around the 'home advantage' of domestic media and rethinks linguistic and cultural proximity.

This volume will appeal to scholars and students researching transnational media, audience studies, screen production studies, media industries and youth studies. More broadly, the book will be of interest to scholars and students of the political economy of the media within the social sciences and humanities.

Adaptation, Rearrangement, and Music Across Screen Media explores the various ways in which adaptation and rearrangement shape the role of music across a range of screen media and communities of viewing. Many forms of audiovisual screen media are characterized by musical adaptation and rearrangement, constantly remixing and reusing pre-existing music in new and unexpected narrative contexts. This book shines a light on this practice and offers a wide-ranging overview of musical adaptation as a practice across film, television, video games, and online media, and identifies several key approaches to understanding its manifestations.

With contributors from musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory, sound studies, media, and gender studies, this volume illuminates one of the key features of music's role in the contemporary audiovisual media landscape. It will be of interest to scholars in musicology, media studies, and sound studies, as well as those studying screen media and music.

Built using the renowned, hands-on Missouri Method, this textbook prepares readers to write about and communicate with people of different backgrounds, offering real-world examples of how to practice excellent journalism and strategic communication that takes culture into account.

No matter the communication purpose, this book will help readers engage with difference and the concept of fault lines, and to identify and mitigate bias. It provides guidance on communicating the complexity inherent in issues such as crime, immigration, and sports, as well as how meaning is created through data and language choices that craft stories and strategic campaigns for communities. Above all, the book encourages readers to reconsider assumptions about race, class, gender, identity, sexual orientation, immigration status, religion, disability and age, and recognize communicators' responsibilities in shaping national and international discussions. This new edition addresses recent significant cultural events (e.g. George Floyd's murder, the COVID-19 pandemic and attacks on DEI), U.S. Supreme Court decisions, and adds a new chapter (Chapter 12) on Visual Communication and Artificial Intelligence.

A fantastic introduction to this complex but important field, this book is perfect for students, teachers and early career communicators. The combination of a hands-on approach and pull-out boxes with the diverse voices curated by editors Maria E. Len-Rios and Earnest L. Perry Jr. makes this an ideal text for the classroom and beyond.

Julius Evola and the Radical Right examines the ideas and influence of Italian thinker Julius Evola (1898-1974), an increasingly popular author within the far right and the esoteric milieu alike.

An iconic figure for successive generations of the radical right, Evola is both revered and reviled, but his past remains contested. Those seeking information about him are confronted with a fractured and contentious legacy. Drawing on the archival record and texts that Evola left behind, this book reconstructs his intellectual trajectory and examines his activities in Fascist Italy, in Nazi Germany, and in the neo-fascist movement after 1945. It demonstrates that Evola and his circle were not as marginal as sometimes portrayed and cooperated more closely with Fascist and Nazi officials than previously recognized. The book dispels many of the myths surrounding Evola and his "spiritual racism" while tracing Evola's enduring influence after his death, showing how his ideas continue to inspire contemporary political movements.

This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Fascism, Nazism, antisemitism, and the Holocaust.

The formulation of sustainability goals ? implicitly or explicitly placed within the wider perspective of a “sustainable future” ? is often characterised by a certain vagueness and arbitrariness. This allows for practices and outcomes which, although formally compliant with set objectives and benchmarks, generate misgivings as to how sustainable they truly are. The term “moral hazard”, widely used in economic discourse, is adopted here to encapsulate the decoupling between intended or declared objectives, on the one hand, and deviant actions with (nominally) undesired results, on the other. This volume addresses moral hazards in the context of sustainability research and policy from the economic, political, and ethical perspectives. This handbook offers a comprehensive overview of the subjects and theories of media use research. In 37 contributions, the questions and subjects of the discipline are presented, the current state of research is analysed and an outlook on open questions is given. The contributions thus provide a systematic approach to the state of research on each topic from a communication science perspective. The handbook is divided into four parts: (1) the foundations of media use, (2) questions of media choice and attraction, (3) specific phenomena of media experiences and processes, and (4) the most important contexts of media use. Modern media effects theories can no longer forego analysing media experiences and processes. The handbook therefore examines these phenomena before and during media use in detail. The handbook’s target readership is the broad specialist audience of communication science and its related subjects, such as sociology, psychology, political science, educational science as well as advanced students of these disciplines. The editors Prof. Dr. Carsten Wuensch is professor of Communication Science with focus on empirical and theoretical perspectives on media use and effects research at the University of Bamberg. This book gives readers the context they need to understand America's racial system and how it affects all Americans today. It explores the hidden history of race and white supremacy in the USA. It covers the creation of a mythological "White race" in North America; the complex array of policies, programs, and decisions that promoted white supremacy across the whole USA; and the impact of America's racial system on all Americans - "Whites" as well as "Others."

The book sheds new light on the legacy of white supremacy in mainstream American culture and in key institutions such as education, housing, government, and health care. It opens the door to understanding the conflicting narratives that divide Americans today and building bridges for a better tomorrow. The authors are a biracial team of activist scholars (one African American, one White). They share personal and family stories that illustrate their very different experiences growing up in America. They also include the stories and legacies of America's diverse populations whose courage, cultures, and contributions are too often neglected in American education. The volume is well-researched, drawing on scholarship from a variety of fields, yet engaging and accessible.

The book is for educators, activists, and the general public - anyone seeking a better understanding of a multicultural America. It includes discussion questions, a glossary, rich visuals, and references for further exploration. It will be an invaluable resource for undergraduate courses in American history, American studies, sociology, education, human services, or public administration, as well as for curious Americans who want to understand today's culture wars, political divisions, and how to build bridges across differences in their communities or workplaces.

In this book, Stathis Psillos and Thodoris Dimitrakos explore the question: how is empirical, and in particular scientific, knowledge possible? Most philosophers have accepted that some restrictions must be placed on empirical knowledge in order for it to be possible. Yet considerable debate has revolved around the precise nature of such restrictions, above all how knowledge can be said to be a priori.

The book traces the development of the concept of the a priori in the philosophy of science, beginning with the Descartes-Newton controversy. The discussion then turns to Leibniz and Hume, Kant's conception of synthetic a priori principles, and Mill's radical empiricism, which sought to eliminate the a priori altogether. The book also examines later transformations of the debate, including the emergence of non-Euclidean geometries and their challenge to the Kantian view, Poincare's conventionalism, the development of the relativised a priori within logical positivism, and the Quine-Carnap debate over analyticity.

Building on these historical and philosophical discussions, the authors develop and defend a novel functional conception of the a priori - captured by the idea that "the a priori is as the a priori does"-according to which a priori principles are those that play a constitutive role in scientific theorising while remaining open to revision.

An engaging and wide-ranging philosophical investigation of the a priori, this book will be of great interest to students and researchers in philosophy of science, metaphysics, epistemology and the history of the philosophy of science.

This book presents the first comprehensive sociological analysis of streakers and streaking culture in elite sport, examining how these transgressors disrupt and affect sporting events.

Streakers are difficult to ignore, bursting into stadiums and arenas naked, sparsely clothed or in disguise and bringing competitions to an abrupt halt by transgressing boundaries in factual, temporal, spatial and social terms. This book employs a rigorous sociological methodology to move beyond interpretations offered by psychiatrists, journalists, security officials and lawyers to explore the "how" and "why" of this curious behaviour. The authors address two key questions: What does observing streakers reveal about elite sport? And what does analysing elite sport reveal about the social figure of the streaker? Through this lens, sporting competitions can be seen as socially constructed scenarios of controlled crises, where streakers act as parasitic second-order troublemakers, adding a secondary layer of chaos to events already centred on the strategic conflict between opponents.

Written for a broad audience, this book will appeal to students, academics and researchers in sociology, sports studies, cultural anthropology, ethnology and social psychology.

In a profound new interweaving of the ideas of Levinas and Laplanche, this book rethinks the origin of ethical capacity in human life.

It elaborates on the implications of ethics at the beginning of life in the care of infants; in psychoanalytic practice; and in the socio-political sphere. The author puts forward the hypothesis of the feminine maternal dimension as the origin of ethical capacity, and proposes the notion of "ethical seduction" to address the asymmetry between analyst and analysand. With rich clinical vignettes, the text offers an expansive metapsychology linking three elements: the organic body and the "Vital-Identital"; the erotic body and the "Sexual"; and the infinite part of our psyche arising through the "Ethical".

Written in the long shadow of the Shoah and amid contemporary violence, this book is original and meaningful reading for all psychoanalysts.

Safe Schools and Family Values in an Age of Gender Backlash: Queer Stories, Social Reproduction, and Contested Futures examines the backlash against Australia's Safe Schools program through an autotheoretical and Marxist lens, situating international struggles over gender and sexuality as rooted in crises of social reproduction and the defence of the heteronormative family under capitalism.

Readers will gain a rigorous framework for understanding contemporary moral panic and backlash about gender and sexuality as historically grounded struggles over social reproduction rather than isolated political disputes. Through autotheoretical analysis, historical case study, and Marxist theory, the book traces the Safe Schools controversy in Australia from the legacy of Section 28 in the UK to contemporary anti-gender mobilisations, offering conceptual tools for analysing moral panics and the structural necessity of 'defending the family'.

This book is intended for scholars and students in education, gender and sexuality studies, sociology, political theory, and cultural studies, as well as educators, activists, and policy practitioners seeking a structural account of contemporary conflicts over inclusion, schooling, and family life.

Archaeology in the Global Cold War explores archaeological practices, theories, and methods, as well as social networks and knowledge circulation in Eastern and Western Europe and beyond during the Cold War (1947-1989).

Drawing on archival sources, published works, and personal recollections, this volume examines archaeology under the Cold War at a broad international scale and from a range of thematic, theoretical, and methodological perspectives. It is structured in five parts. The first examines how political ideology and propaganda shaped archaeological knowledge production. The second explores the relationship between Cold War science policy and archaeological practice. The third analyses the role of institutions and individual actors. Addressing theory and method, the fourth part considers developments such as aerial photography and the work of influential figures. The volume concludes with personal accounts by archaeologists reflecting on their professional experiences, integrating lived experience with broader historical analysis.

This volume is for archaeologists interested in the history of their discipline, historians of science and the humanities, and scholars of contemporary history working on the intellectual history of the Cold War.

This volume explores what evolutionary theory can contribute to our philosophical understanding of virtue and vice.

The last twenty years have seen an uptick in philosophical discussions of the biological and cultural evolution of morality. Yet, there has been surprisingly little discussion of virtue ethics and the evolution of human character, even though human virtues are almost certainly one of the markers of our species' distinctive sociality. This volume investigates the evolution of human character traits and its implications for moral philosophy and value theory. The chapters address central questions such as: To what extent can evolutionary theories explain virtue, vice, or specific virtues/vices? Are philosophical accounts of virtue compatible with evolutionary explanations? How might tensions between them be resolved? What implications might the evolution of virtue have concerning debates in value theory more broadly? What implications does the evolution of virtue have for living well in the digital age? And how can we re-engineer the conceptual machinery of virtue/vice to our advantage? The volume serves as a first step toward evaluating the influence of evolution on human conceptions of what kind of people we ought to be.

Philosophy and the Evolution of Virtue and Vice will appeal to researchers and graduate students working in normative ethics, virtue ethics, metaethics, moral psychology, philosophy of social science, philosophy of biology, and evolutionary theory.

Shells were an important commodity in the prehistoric and ancient worlds. Dating back to the Palaeolithic period, shells are among the earliest symbolic artefacts and are a key indicator of human cognitive evolution. In this volume, Daniella B. Bar-Yosef Mayer offers a multi-disciplinary, global survey of shell artefacts in human history. Integrating approaches from biominerology, palaeontology, and geoarchaeology, she shows how humans exploited shells as fundamental component of material culture, alongside lithics and ceramics. Bar-Yosef Mayer traces how the transition to farming was accompanied by technological advances and innovations as reflected in new artfefact types, including decorative objects, such as pendants and bangles, as well as tools and vessels, such as containers and fish hooks. Her study also considers the use of shell money as currency in historical periods. Featuring examples of shell technology from around the world, this volume serves as an introduction to the topic and is suitable for use in courses human prehistory and early civilizations.

An Introduction to Audio Description in Museums, Galleries and Heritage Sites is a comprehensive guide that explores Audio Description (AD), a specialised verbal commentary that transforms visual information into accessible content for people who cannot fully perceive images. While AD has established applications in theatres, cinemas and broadcast media, its implementation in museums, galleries and heritage sites represents a rapidly growing field with unique challenges and opportunities.

Live audio-described tours and recorded audio descriptive guides serve as invaluable resources for blind and partially sighted visitors, combining engaging descriptions with practical navigation directions. These tools function simultaneously as intellectual support and practical aids, enabling meaningful engagement with cultural spaces. The book examines whether AD can transcend its utilitarian function to become an art form in itself, exploring how describing art might constitute its own creative practice.

The volume addresses the critical need for accessible cultural experiences, focusing specifically on provision of visual access for blind and partially sighted visitors to museums, galleries and heritage sites. It offers practical advice, exercises and professional guidance to museum staff and translation professionals, providing clear frameworks for understanding AD implementation and execution in cultural contexts. Written for diverse audiences, this book serves as essential reading for students of Audiovisual Translation within Translation Studies and Accessibility within Museum and Curatorial Studies. It also functions as a vital reference for professional curators seeking to understand AD's potential contributions to visitor experience and for experienced describers looking to diversify from traditional AD contexts into the specialised museum environment. The guide bridges theoretical understanding with practical application, making it an indispensable resource for anyone involved in creating more inclusive and accessible cultural institutions.

This book examines the transformative role of soundscapes and digital communication technologies in shaping listening practices, cultural identity, social cohesion, and civic engagement. Centred on the concept of Listening as Civic Infrastructure, this book argues that listening-long overlooked in speech-centric models of democracy-is a vital and active form of civic participation in multicultural, digitally mediated societies.

Through ethnographic research with Sri Lankan migrants in Melbourne, this book explores how digital 'noise' intersects to influence memory, belonging, and the dynamics of global civil discourse. It bridges sound studies, digital media research, and migration studies, offering innovative methodologies such as sonic ethnography and artography. It provides readers with rich case studies, theoretical insights, and practical frameworks for understanding how to shape individual and collective identities. Through its key concepts-Sonic Citizenship, Mediated Listening Publics, Digital Noise, and Audibility-this book illuminates how sound functions as a civic infrastructure for displaced communities. By linking physical and digital environments, this book highlights the critical role of sound and communication technologies in fostering resilience, cultural preservation, and civic participation.

Designed for scholars, postgraduate students, and practitioners in sound studies, media studies, and migration studies, and democratic theory, this book also appeals to professionals interested in digital communication, cultural preservation, and community-building initiatives. Its interdisciplinary approach ensures relevance for both academic and professional audiences across disciplines. This book includes an accompanying audio artwork created as part of the research project, accessible online. This sonic artefact offers a practical extension of this book's themes, allowing readers to engage with the auditory dimension of the research firsthand.

This edited volume explores the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the film and audiovisual media industries.

Up to now, discussion of this topic has largely dwelled on a few discrete topics, such as the representations of AI in cinematic history or the generation of photorealistic images of de-aged or dead actors. The thrust of this book is to demonstrate how AI now plays a role in each and every stage of the value chain, from development and scriptwriting to editing workflows, post-production special effects, and audience engagement. Uniquely, this collection establishes a comprehensive understanding of AI's role with not only cutting-edge original academic research but also practitioner interviews and industry insights from diverse global perspectives. Chapters closely examine case studies of how AI is influencing scriptwriting, storytelling, visual effects, music scoring, and how these tools are also changing film distribution, programming, marketing, and the viewer experience. Key overarching themes include how AI is both augmenting and constraining human creativity, the ethical and socio-cultural implications of AI across the film and media value chain, and the potential biases inherent in AI-generated content.

This volume is an essential resource for researchers, students, practitioners, and policymakers, offering a nuanced perspective on the emergence and integration of AI in the audiovisual sector and its implications for the future of creative media production.

In an age where social media platforms structure the very conditions of visibility, this book investigates how LGBTQ lives are made, managed, and sometimes erased by algorithmic infrastructures.

Bringing together voices from across the Global South and diasporic communities, this interdisciplinary volume examines how queer and trans individuals navigate digital platforms as spaces of expression, surveillance, resistance, and survival. Spanning geographies from Bangladesh to China, and Pakistan to the Philippines, contributors explore the affective, political, and economic entanglements of platformed queer life. The chapters interrogate how algorithms sort content, how visibility becomes conditional, and how queer resistance emerges not only through representation, but through subversion, invisibility, memory work, and infrastructural reappropriation. Foregrounding intersectionality, decolonial critique, and transnational feminist and queer theory, this collection reframes digital life not as a neutral terrain, but as one where queerness is contested, commodified, and continuously reimagined. This book is both an urgent critique of platform capitalism and a testament to queer world-building amid precarity and constraint.

A timely exploration of the algorithmic, economic, and socio-technical undercurrents that shape queer lives online, this book will be of interest to students, researchers, and academics working in the areas of queer media, global digital culture, critical platform studies, and media and activism.

This book concerns possibilities and obstacles to global cooperation in turbulent times, providing critical insight on how notions of sustainable development, crisis, and diplomacy are shaped by changing moods.

Global Cooperation in Times of Crisis investigates how mood shapes global cooperation. The book focuses on theorising the role of moods in multilateralism, their specific implications for issues as diverse as migration, media, livelihoods, conflict, and development aid, containing also regional case studies including on China, Russia, the United States, Europe, Turkey, and Brazil. It asks: What became of the global cooperation spirit we saw in 2015, with the adoption of several major international frameworks, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the Paris Agreement on climate change? Bringing together regional perspectives and original conceptual essays, the book offers a new lens on the changing conditions for global cooperation by focusing on moods and their effects, with important implications for the United Nations 2030+ agenda and beyond.

This volume brings together 19 chapters offering timely and original lenses for understanding the times in which we live, aimed at scholars, students, and practitioners working across the social sciences, diplomacy, humanitarianism, politics, and the humanities
