This open access book approaches self-destructive thoughts and behaviours as inextricable from supernatural belief. It sheds light on the multifaceted ways early modern people negotiated and responded to a range of suicidal thoughts and behaviours which they identified as originating from the devil. Much of the scholarship on suicide has been limited to death by suicide and the legal consequences of this crime. In contrast, this book utilises encounters with the supernatural to access stories of the temptation to harm or kill oneself, as recorded in Britain and New England from the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth century, to centre the experiences of suicidal people and those around them. In unpicking suicide from its criminal context and situating it within a supernatural one, it argues that suicidal thoughts and acts were not nearly so stigmatised in the early modern period as has been assumed. Indeed, the entrenchment of suicidal behaviour within the 'script' of supernatural affliction facilitated its expression.

At the turn of the twentieth century, confrontations between rival French, Italian, and Ottoman empires solidified national, colonial, and racial boundaries throughout the Mediterranean basin. Yet, even in the face of an emergent ethno-nationalist world order, these decades saw various North African transnational political movements thrive. Sea Changes examines how North Africans of diverse social and religious backgrounds forged new spaces and networks in which to envision border-crossing political alternatives, such as pan-Islamism, pan-Arabism, Zionism, and international leftism.

To unveil these alternative networks and political possibilities, Chris Rominger follows the trajectory of Jewish Tunisian photographer Albert Samama-Chikly (1872-1934) and his contacts from the 1870s to the 1920s. Not an overtly political man in any traditional sense, the highly-mobile Samama nonetheless found himself an intimate witness to some of the early twentieth century's most violent political dramas, including France's colonization of Tunisia, Italy's conquest of neighboring Libya, the forced conscription of North Africans during World War I, and the postwar birth of transnational and radical movements across North Africa. Emphasizing the border-crossing experiences of those who lived on the Mediterranean's southern shores, Sea Changes locates North Africa at the very heart of key transformations and imperial conflicts where diverse and fluid transimperial affinities clashed with emergent ethno-nationalist imperatives.

Accumulating Power offers a new way of thinking about belonging, sovereignty, and empire - and how the meanings of being "Ottoman" changed with the intersection of capitalism and imperial reform. Ottoman subjecthood and loyalty transformed around the turn of the twentieth century with the emergence of an international system and intensification of commodity production. Imperial belonging was conditioned by new discourses around community, increasing material conflict, and the new tools, forms, and ideologies of the modern state. People displayed their "Ottoman-ness" in how they coped with these novel political economies and shaped them to their own ends.

With this book, Camille Lyans Cole traces Ottoman belonging through the making of a region, the Gulf of Basra - centered on the port city of Basra, extending to southern Iran and Kuwait - where people, water, commodities, ideas, and money all circulated. Here, elites' desire to claim Ottoman-ness often arose at points of friction between regional ways of life and the transforming structures of the territorializing modern empire-state. Cole centers the lives of six individuals, tracing how each contributed to the material and political worlds of the Gulf of Basra. Through these microhistories, Cole reveals how elites used "technologies of the state" - bureaucratic instruments, discourses, and symbols - to accumulate wealth, capital, access to resources, and imperial status and to declare their own Ottoman-ness.

There is a view of the Mediterranean steeped in prejudice regarding the oriental backwardness of its peoples. And there is a lyrical, aestheticizing view that envisions the Mediterranean as a sea standing firm against the oceanic power of capitalism. This book is a philosophical guide in order to deconstruct these two forms of 'Mediterraneanism': the first relegates the South of Europe and the whole Mediterranean to a position out of space and time, out of history and out of the West (because history can only be Western history). The second form is the reversal of the first, or the reversal of the stigma. Thus, the critique against the Mediterranean's slowness turns into praise in contrast to the speed of capitalism; emotion and irrationality become features of new non-logocentric philosophies of nature, no longer played out by separating but by blending mind and body, reason and passion. Both of these forms have created an imaginary Mediterranean, ventriloquizing its peoples.

European integration has many origins, although its history goes back less far than is often assumed. This study offers an accessible and engaging overview of the past and present of today's European Union, from the postwar era to the present day. Beginning with the foundational treaties of the 1950s, the book examines how the EU became an increasingly global actor through the 1980s and 1990s. Focusing particularly on recent developments, Kiran Klaus Patel explores how the EU's current role was far from a given and remains fragile. Looking beyond public discourse fixated on crisis, Patel highlights the adaptability and resilience of the EU and how it has turned challenges into opportunities and expanded its own role in the process. This book sheds new light on the past in order to understand the present - and possible options for the future. In the process, it challenges conventional wisdoms of Europhiles and Eurosceptics alike.

Alexander the Great is the only Classic hero whose exploits were widely known in the Slavic Middle Ages, mainly through the Greek Alexander Romance. At least two great groups of translations can be differentiated, one made in East Slavic and another one in South Slavic lands. The reasons behind these translations vary depending on the area, the time and the purpose. This book explores these translations by analysing almost fifty pre-seventeenth century manuscripts in Greek and Slavonic, as well as the relation of the Romance to all the other Classical and Biblical texts known in Slavonic in which Alexander was the main character. A detailed study of the manuscript evidence challenges current theories on the Slavic Alexanders, redating the translation of the earliest East version. It also presents new findings on scribal practices in the translation of non-canonical texts and a new understanding of paratactic scribal innovation.

An Orthodox Christian theological defense of liberal democracy that builds on the daring Christian humanist reinterpretation of incarnation and deification (theosis) in the Russian religious philosophy of Divine-Humanity.

At a time when Christianity is becoming increasingly associated with anti-liberal and authoritarian sentiment, Deifying Democracy offers a theological defense of liberal democracy grounded in the Orthodox Christian doctrine of deification (theosis). Building on the participatory metaphysics of "Divine-Humanity" in the modern Russian theologians Vladimir Soloviev, Sergei Bulgakov, and S. L. Frank, the book challenges the widespread view - perpetuated by prominent Orthodox voices, including Patriarch Kirill of Moscow - that deification is fundamentally incompatible with liberal democracy and universal human rights. The book particularly responds to the liberalism critique of John Mibank, who enlists modern Russian theology and its understanding of deification in support of an alternative "postliberal" Christian political order. The book develops a "politics of theosis" that grounds a form of liberal democracy within the ongoing story of God's incarnation and humanity's deification. By recovering a theological foundation for human dignity and democratic participation in human persons' vocation to become "partakers of the divine nature" through free and creative cooperation with God's deifying grace, the work offers an alternative to both secular liberalism and religious anti-liberalism.

The central argument proposes a "double movement," modeled on the Chalcedonian confession of Christ's divine-human unity, of supporting liberal democracy while working from within to transform it according to the principles of Christian love embodied in the Russian doctrine of sobornost', or ecclesial communion. Rather than replacing liberal democracy with a Christian political order, the book advocates the work of "deifying democracy"-building up the liberal democratic institutions that facilitate human deification while seeking to incarnate sobornost' in society through loving democratic dialogue about common goods.

The book will be of interest to readers hoping to understand how theosis, a central motif of Orthodox theology, can redeem and enrich rather than undermine liberal democratic values and institutions, as well as how liberal democracy is a system capable of serving the world's deification.

This book examines recent and significant changes in Religious Education (RE) within Catholic schools in England, situating them within broader global debates about curriculum reform. It analyses the origins, rationale, and implications of the Religious Education Directory, which represents a major shift in the aims, structure, and content of RE in the Catholic sector.

The book provides a clear overview of why reform has been deemed necessary and offers a critical assessment of the Directory's theoretical and theological foundations. It identifies both the strengths and limitations of the new framework, while also addressing the practical challenges associated with its implementation in schools. Particular attention is given to the ways in which educators and institutions might respond to these challenges and enact meaningful curriculum innovation.

By evaluating the potential impacts of these reforms, the book contributes to ongoing discussions about the purpose and future of RE in contemporary education systems. It highlights the wider international relevance of developments in England, offering insights for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners engaged in curriculum change within diverse religious and educational contexts.

The definitive history of go-go music and culture

Go-go is the heart and soul of Washington, DC's African American culture-a source of resilience for the community and a way to celebrate Black lives. As the soundtrack of the District since the mid-1970s, go-go was designated the official music of Washington in 2020, and it has been incorporated into music genres such as hip-hop and R&B for decades.

Crankin! offers a rich narrative packed with photos that highlight go-go's key figures, bands, and moments-spanning fifty years from its beginnings all the way to its central role in the #BLM protests in 2020 and the #DontMuteDC and Moechella movements. This sweeping history of go-go music culture details the life of Chuck Brown, the "godfather of go-go," and documents the history of the genre's early pioneers, Trouble Funk, Rare Essence, and Experience Unlimited (EU). The book also covers EU's 1988 number one hit, "Da Butt," go-go's gospel and grown 'n' sexy subgenres, go-go's international impact, the bouncebeat sound, go-go lifestyles, activism, and, finally, the homecoming as go-go artists brought Chuck Brown's African-inspired beat to Africa.

Crankin! will entertain and inform fans of go-go as well as African American and American-created music; musicologists; scholars of American culture and subcultures; and readers interested in DC history.

A daughter uncovers the hidden life of a decorated World War II hero - and the devastating legacy of war trauma and political betrayal that shaped generations

When Nadia Rupniak buried her father, she believed she knew the man who had ruled her childhood with harsh discipline and an explosive temper. Only after his death did she discover that he had been a highly decorated Polish officer and World War II hero who had lived for decades in secrecy, exile, and unresolved trauma.

The Betrayed War Hero reconstructs the extraordinary life of a soldier who witnessed the brutal deaths of comrades in battle, lost family members to Soviet deportation, and saw his homeland sacrificed in the political aftermath of the war. Determined to liberate Poland, he fought alongside Allied forces across Europe, only to find that the victory he had risked everything for would not restore his country or his family. Unable to return home and fearful for relatives living under communist rule, he concealed his military achievements and the scale of his suffering for more than sixty years.

Blending memoir, biography, and psychological analysis, Rupniak traces the lasting impact of war trauma and moral injury on veterans and their families. Drawing on archival research, family documents, and her own experience as a scientist specializing in psychiatric and neurological disorders, she offers an intimate, uniquely informed insight into silence, resilience, and intergenerational trauma. The book also brings overdue attention to the vital yet often overlooked role of Polish servicemen in defeating Nazi Germany and the geopolitical betrayals that followed.

Compelling and timely, The Betrayed War Hero is both an intimate family story and a broader meditation on memory, exile, and the hidden costs of war. It will resonate with readers of narrative history, memoir, and works exploring the psychological aftermath of conflict.

This book introduces the cognitive intraface to designate the interpretive zone where human and Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems interact, reorganizing educational activity through recursive exchanges. Meaning emerges across heterogeneous substrates and cannot be attributed to human or machine alone. Drawing on N. Katherine Hayles, semiotic theory, and media theory, the book reframes cognition as materially grounded interpretation. Organized into forty concise entries, this book adopts a recursive critical format that revisits established educational and technological assumptions, isolating specific problems in AI-mediated learning while clarifying the infrastructural conditions that shape interpretation. This book serves as a valuable resource for scholars, educators, and researchers seeking a rigorous epistemological grounding for designing, analyzing, and critiquing AI-intensive educational environments.

This book presents the first English translation of Ali Sedad Bey's pioneering 1883 treatise on thermodynamics, atomism and the emerging scientific worldview of the late Ottoman Empire. It represents a cornerstone in the intersection of 19th-century scientific advancements and Islamic philosophical thought. Originally written in Ottoman Turkish, it provides an unparalleled glimpse into the early introduction of thermodynamics, atomism, and Darwin's theory of natural selection to the Ottoman intellectual sphere. By exploring the scientific principles that dominated European thought and comparing them with Ash?arite' metaphysics, Ali Sedad offers a detailed presentation and critical evaluation of these theories, underlining the compatibility between modern science and Islamic teachings. This book is not only a historical document but also a profound philosophical discourse on the nature of scientific inquiry and its metaphysical underpinnings.

This edition includes a substantial introductory essay situating Ali Sedad within nineteenth-century intellectual networks and scientific debates, and a comprehensive glossary of technical, theological, and philosophical terminology. Reclaiming a foundational but long-overlooked text, this volume offers scholars of Islamic intellectual history, history of science, and science-religion studies a rare window into how global scientific ideas were interpreted, contested, and transformed in a non-Western context.

New Mexico's long-standing Mexican American population, known as "Nuevomexicanos," often see themselves as distinctive from other Mexican-origin people across the Southwestern United States. In this book, Casandra Salgado theorizes this distinction as "Mexican American exceptionalism," and interrogates how present-day Nuevomexicanos residing in Albuquerque make sense of race and racism within this context.

Nuevomexicanos' view their long history and numerical dominance in New Mexico buffers them from racism. Yet Salgado finds they still confront anti-Mexican racism and are seen as foreign. While Nuevomexicanos' racial frames are rooted in their colonial history to elevate their racial status, Salgado argues this strategy no longer serves contemporary Nuevomexicanos as such frames are imbued with colorblind racism - ignoring white supremacy and perpetuating intra-group discrimination.

As multi-generational Latinos are predicted to become a larger proportion of the Latino population in the United States, Salgado's findings are suggestive of larger trends in the country's evolving ethnoracial landscape - trends toward region-specific identities that buck against common binaries.

When discussing news selection and the media's function of issue framing, the technical term agenda-setting is often invoked. In contrast, its counterpart, agenda-cutting, is far less frequently addressed in academic or public discourse. Yet agenda-cutting represents a widespread practice in media, politics, and society, whereby topics are deliberately or inadvertently excluded from public discourse or withheld from it. The Initiative Nachrichtenaufklaerung (INA) (i.e. Initiative News Enlightenment), a partner organization of the US-american Project Censored, has long been engaged in the systematic examination of neglected topics and news items. This edited volume is the first to offer an in-depth scholarly exploration of the phenomenon from multiple perspectives.

The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

This volume advances the understanding of meaning-making in the age of artificial intelligence (AI) by adopting a semiotic perspective. It repositions semiotics as a discipline capable of engaging in a mutually fruitful dialogue with the social sciences. It explores processes of signification in emerging forms of human/non-human coexistence, focusing on the interdependence between consumption, technology, society, and culture, with particular attention to the role played by brands.

The chapters raise a number of key questions: What methodologies can be employed to effectively study interactions among humans, non-human entities, and intangible elements (such as algorithms) in the construction of meaning? How can core notions such as enunciation, veridiction, and anthropomorphism be rethought in light of the expressive forms produced by AI? How can the complex operations of AI be interpreted through the lenses of translation and multimodality, and what challenges does this scenario pose to these concepts? What role do leading brands play in mitigating consumer resistance to the adoption of such technologies? What kinds of forms of life emerge and stabilize when humans accept delegating knowledge, passions, and actions to devices endowed with unprecedented levels of agency? How does AI represent itself?

This volume is of appeal to a wide readership across the social sciences, cultural and media studies.

This book challenges Eurocentric foundations of the sociological category of "sect," demonstrating why it is inadequate to understand Hindu sectarian formations. It argues that caste is central-not peripheral-to how sectarian orders within Hinduism emerge, persist, and transform. By foregrounding Assamese Vaishnavism-a Bhakti tradition that emerged in the 15th century and has now become emblematic of the region-the book places Assam, often marginalised in accounts of Indian religious traditions, at the centre of analysis. It offers a critical account of Bhakti by tracing its entanglements with local caste hierarchies and broader historical processes, thereby reframing Vaishnavism through the social and political specificities of postcolonial Assam.

Moving beyond dominant framings of India's Northeast that primarily emphasise tribes, ethnic conflict, migration, folk culture, and heritage, the book advances a sociological enquiry into institutionalised religion, the enduring vitality of caste, and the state's role in mediating identity and belonging in the region through an ethnographic lens. It further contributes to the debates on subalternity by exploring how untouchability and exclusion within Assamese Vaishnava discourse shape diverse expressions of subaltern agency.

Debunking the egalitarian thesis of Bhakti, religion appears here not only as a matter of faith or an epiphenomenon of culture but as a contested field persistently shaped by caste, the state, and discourses of power. The book also assesses subaltern religiosity as a mode of resistance within the Vaishnava context, foregrounding the various grammars of resistance enacted by the marginalised communities against hegemonic structures. This book speaks to scholars and students of sociology of religion, anthropology of Hinduism, Religious studies, Subaltern studies, Dalit studies, and South Asian studies.

Oklahoma Reconsidered provides a concise and conversational history of Oklahoma from the 1700s and into the twenty-first century by two historians who show how Oklahoma has been shaped by wars, epidemics, civil rights movements, and unified efforts to heal after devastating terrorist attacks. While other books on Oklahoma history often linger in the nineteenth century, Oklahoma Reconsidered places the central focus on Oklahoma from 1907 to 2025-including the rise in the Latinx population in the state, the success of the Oklahoma City Thunder NBA basketball team as a unifying force in the state, and the significance of the McGirt decision in 2020, which granted tribal jurisdiction over much of eastern Oklahoma as Indian Country, offering a glimpse into the tensions between state and tribal authority.

Our Land tells the story of black Southerners who gained ownership of land and farmed it throughout the era of Jim Crow. Drawing on a new oral history collection and archival research, Adrienne M. Petty and Mark R. Schultz analyze over 300 interviews with farmers and their descendants to better understand how so many rural black families became farm owners despite the considerable odds stacked against them. How did landownership affect their experience of the Jim Crow era? Why did their aspiration for land persist for as long as it did despite the shifting fortunes of farming? And how did acquiring land shape the futures of their descendants? Landownership often allowed these farmers to put down roots and claim a place as their own. It gave them greater control over their own children's labor, which they often used to invest in education. More often than with tenant farmers, landowners' children completed high school, and their grandchildren completed college. This education later bore fruit for many men and women, as they left the farms and sought urban professional or business careers, laying the foundation for the black middle class of today. Although the limited pathways to landownership during this time hardly delivered guarantees of economic security, Petty and Schultz show that the most prosperous members of the landowning class supported institutions that benefited their communities. This book unearths the epic struggle of southern black farmers and reveals that land imbued them with at least the semblance, no matter how fleeting, of independence.

How Alaska redefined US colonialism through Indigenous resistance and legal innovation

Long treated as the symbolic "last frontier," Alaska was, in fact, the United States's first experiment in overseas empire. Settler Imperialism reveals these concepts as fictitious stories promoted by government officials and offers a sweeping history of Alaska Native legal and political struggle in the face of a colonial structure that defied the norms of US expansion. Examining Alaska as both a settler and imperial space, Jess Arnett challenges familiar narratives of American growth, sovereignty, and law.

Following the 1867 Treaty of Cession when the United States purchased Alaska from Russia, the federal government refused to sign treaties with Alaska Natives, excluded them from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and denied the region designation as Indian Country. These departures from standard Indian policy created legal ambiguity that enabled new opportunities for land dispossession and resource extraction by state and corporate interests. Focusing on history from the late nineteenth century through the 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, Arnett uncovers how the Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, and other Indigenous nations navigated - and contested - Alaska's peculiar legal terrain. Members of these communities forcefully petitioned for US citizenship, mobilized Indigenous legal orders, and engaged selective federal Indian law to assert land rights and political authority.

By placing Alaska at the center of US colonial history, Settler Imperialism turns a critical lens to the evolution of America. To understand US expansion, race, and legal formation, one must understand Alaska first as a proving ground for empire, not the last frontier.

This book discovers a groundbreaking exploration of sustainable development in the Caribbean. This book reveals how Caribbean nations are navigating the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offering sharp, critical insights into progress on ending poverty (SDG 1), zero hunger (SDG 2), quality education (SDG 4), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), industry and innovation (SDG 9), reduced inequalities (SDG 10), climate action (SDG 13), and strong institutions (SDG 16).

Rooted in a powerful decolonizing framework, this book moves beyond conventional analysis to examine how enduring colonial legacies shaped by racism, patriarchy, and economic dependency continue to influence development outcomes. It brings urgent attention to the role of social protection systems, persistent gender inequalities, and the realities of gender-based violence and social exclusion. With a clear focus on the region's unique vulnerabilities, this book not only interrogates challenges but also delivers solutions. It advances innovative, context-specific financing strategies designed to support sustainable and inclusive development across Caribbean states.

Re-centering Caribbean voices and lived experiences, this book challenges dominant global narratives and calls for development approaches that truly reflect post-colonial realities. Essential reading for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners, this book offers a bold, transformative vision of what sustainable development can and must look like for the Caribbean.
