Wealth inequality is both extreme and persistent across much of the world, yet it remains poorly understood relative to income inequality and poverty alleviation. Bringing together original research on Brazil, India, and South Africa, this volume examines the processes through which elite groups accumulate and maintain disproportionate control over assets - through historically embedded social hierarchies, institutional arrangements, and political-economic processes. These middle-income, semi-industrialised societies combine extreme wealth with persistent poverty, making them revealing sites for analysing how inequality is actively produced, not merely inherited.

Across nine chapters, the book traces the historical formation of wealth shaped by colonial legacies, racial and caste hierarchies, land regimes, and state formation, before analysing contemporary processes of elite continuities and reproduction. Rather than treating elites as a numerical category (the "top 1%"), the contributors analyse elites as historically constituted and institutionally embedded actors whose wealth and power are produced within existing accumulation regimes, and who in turn act to stabilise, adapt, and extend those regimes over time.

Following the last war, after the revelation of Nazi crimes and the Holocaust, a powerful school of thought, championed by "a small but vocal group of researchers" (who have become increasingly numerous and vocal), attempted to definitively discredit racism by arguing that the concept of race had no biological basis and therefore that racism was nonsensical. This has been called "an absolute paradigmatic shift". However, many scientists today continue to use human continental populations as units of analysis ("proxies") in numerous studies, particularly in the biomedical field, resorting (not always) to unsatisfactory euphemisms ("ethnic groups," "ancestry groups," "geographic populations") to avoid the term of "race". A recent trend (David Reich, Harvard University, Pierre-Andre Taguieff, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France) is to consider that the dismissal of the concept of biological race was premature and could be challenged by current genomic data ("race realists").

The present book offers a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in biology (genetics, genomics, evolution, epigenetics, paleogenomics) in the study of the biological variability of past and present human populations. I propose that the question of the existence or non-existence of human races is poorly framed, as it is to a large extent a matter of definitions. I emphasize that it is dangerous to base antiracism on scientific data that is inherently provisional and fluctuating. I advocate a mutual respect ("reciprocal sanctuarization") between science, on the one hand, and ethics and politics, on the other. Ethics and politics should not interfere with the scientific process, which is based on the rational analysis of objective data. It is dangerous to assume that a scientific theory is necessarily false simply because it appears scandalous from the perspective of the prevailing morality, which is notoriously variable depending on time and place. Such an a priori condemnation based on morality, rather than on scientific arguments, was the fate of heliocentrism (Nicolaus Copernicus), the theory of evolution (Charles Darwin), the hypothesis of the antiquity of humankind (Jacques Boucher de Perthes), and the concept of childhood sexuality (Sigmund Freud). Conversely, while scientific data must be open to free discussion, societal choices ultimately rest on ethical and political considerations, regardless of scientific findings, and in accordance with the values of the society in question. Antiracism, in our society, is one of these key values. Rather than a scientific statement, it is a moral stance and a political choice, which decision-makers must enforce with the full force of the law. "Racism is not an opinion, it is a crime". The principle of mutual respect ("reciprocal sanctuarization") that I propose can constitute a sound basis for such a renewed antiracism, far more so than a "scientific antiracism" that imprudently relies on scientific data, which is inherently unpredictable and provisional.

How sex workers and activists engage in non-capitalist care practices to manage precarity, stigma, and criminalization

In Sex Worker Solidarity, Lauren Levitt argues that because of their marginalized status, which makes them outsiders in legal, labor, medical, and social networks, sex workers inevitably care for one another in distinct ways that are outside of traditional material and emotional support structures. Through participant observation and interviews with sex workers and sex worker activists at the Sex Workers Outreach Project Los Angeles (SWOP-LA) and Dungeon X, a large commercial dungeon in New York City, Levitt illustrates how sex workers create forms of value for one another that go beyond the value they create for bosses and clients, providing a model for broader social change in the face of increasing wealth inequality.

In 1802 Humphry Davy hailed a new era in which science was empowering mankind as never before: 'it has', he said, 'bestowed upon him powers which may be almost called creative; which have enabled him to modify and change the beings surrounding him, and by his experiments to interrogate nature with power, not simply as a scholar, passive and seeking only to understand her operations, but rather as a master, active with his own instruments.' This statement, which Mary Shelley had in mind when she invented Victor Frankenstein, made of the scientist a Romantic, sublime figure - a dominant male who penetrated nature at will. It neatly epitomised the increased cultural authority that science acquired in the years 1770-1837; it also heralded a modern, industrial society that benefited from the technologies and treatments which organised science enabled, yet at the same time degraded the planet. As Davy knew, it was in the Romantic era that scientists pioneered vaccination - the technique that has saved millions from early death and tamed once fatal diseases; it was also in that era that they developed the carbon-burning machines that, in the process of driving the factory, the railway and the steamship, led to today's climate change. This anthology will present cross-sections of the developments that Davy - and Mary Shelley - witnessed and predicted. Affect's Engine is an immersive ethnography of queer people of color on the social media platform Tumblr during its "peak" years, 2010-2015. Alexander Cho tells the story of Tumblr users and the hurricane of content that they circulated-and that circulated around them. Chronicling a formative time in social media history, Cho shows how a multiply minoritized population utilized Tumblr's unique structure to express, emote, and bond together as a survival strategy for resisting white supremacy and heteronormativity. Paying critical attention to user-facing design, he argues that this was not as possible on other platforms. The same features that drew queer people of color to Tumblr-to feel intensely-also explain why the platform did not succeed financially: its design did not instantiate a version of the good liberal subject-linear, singular, discrete, orderly, public, and market legible. While painting a vivid picture of a vital and bygone internet era, Cho asks readers to take seriously how affect is shaped by user-facing design on social media.
