An ethical approach to religion tries to make sense of religious claims in terms of values shared by religious and secular people alike. In From Idolatry to Holiness, Samuel Fleischaker contributes to that project by providing an ethical framework for understanding the purpose of Jewish law (halakha). He begins by interpreting idolatry as self-worship, and explores the idea, advocated by Moses Maimonides, that Jewish law aims at curing people of idolatry. Though he endorses aspects of this idea, Fleischacker criticizes Maimonides and his modern followers for having an alienating and remote conception of God and a thin conception of the purpose of human life. He then uses ideas gleaned from Immanuel Kant, Soren Kierkegaard, and Martin Heidegger to provide a richer conception of God and of our lives. Halakha does not just free us of self-worship, Fleischacker concludes. Rather, it enables us to experience the presence of God-holiness-in everything around us.

This engaging book explores the growing role of AI in inventive processes and considers whether existing patent laws are capable of accommodating AI-generated inventions. Francesca Mazzi analyses how AI can design and enhance technical solutions while challenging core assumptions of patentability - most notably, the centrality of human creativity.

Mazzi examines the nature of inventorship and evaluates the extent to which current legal regimes can recognise or respond to inventions created with limited or no human input. Scrutinising the concept of inventiveness and the continued relevance of the 'person skilled in the art', chapters question how patent law can ensure sufficient transparency when inventions arise from complex and opaque AI systems. Drawing on comparative methodologies and practical examples, the book concludes by reflecting on the broader justification of patent protection in light of non-human inventive activity and the compatibility between patent law and AI-driven innovation.

Presenting a multi-jurisdictional analysis, Patentability of AI-Generated Inventions is a crucial resource for scholars and students of intellectual property law and technologies. Patent lawyers and copyright policymakers will also benefit from its actionable recommendations for navigating the future of IP.

Judging Through Narrative explores the normative frames, or judicial narratives, that non-Muslim courts construct when adjudicating Muslim Family Law disputes. The book examines how these narratives shape the rule of law, gender reform, and public trust in the justice system. Drawing on over 400 interviews with judges, lawyers, and litigants, and an analysis of nearly 3,000 judicial decisions from Ghana, India, Israel, and Greece, the book reveals how coherence and fragmentation in judicial storytelling influences legal legitimacy and reform. Introducing the concept of 'narratival (in)cohesion', this work offers a new framework for understanding how courts mediate between religion, rights, and state authority. Bridging law, political science, and socio-legal studies, it is an essential resource for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to understand how judicial narratives shape the lived experience of law in diverse, multi-religious societies.

The fourth edition of Market Abuse Regulation provides a timely and authoritative examination of the laws, regulatory frameworks, and enforcement practices designed to protect the integrity of global financial markets. Building on the success of the previous editions, this thoroughly revised volume offers clear, practical guidance on the prevention, detection, and prosecution of insider dealing, market manipulation, fraud, money laundering, and related forms of financial misconduct. Since the third edition appeared in 2019, financial markets have undergone dramatic transformation. Rapid digitalization, accelerating internationalization, proliferating online trading environments, and the emergence of digital assets have fundamentally reshaped how market abuse occurs-and how it must be regulated. This new edition reflects these developments with substantial updates on cryptocurrency and other digital asset regimes, high-speed and algorithmic trading, and the growing regulatory challenges posed by quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and automated market-surveillance technologies. This new edition offers expanded coverage of post-Brexit divergence between UK and EU regulatory models, including detailed treatment of new legislation, rulemaking, and enforcement strategy in the UK, EU, and United States, as well as comparative guidance on emerging regimes in other major jurisdictions. It provides up-to-date analysis of significant recent cases, new international market-manipulation rules, revised insider dealing laws, and high-profile incidents—such as unauthorized electronic access to confidential central-bank communications—that have shaped the modern understanding of market integrity. Market Abuse Regulation remains an essential resource for legal practitioners, compliance professionals, regulators, financial institutions, and academics. With its comprehensive coverage of both foundational principles and cutting-edge issues, the fourth edition equips readers to navigate an increasingly complex regulatory landscape and to understand the evolving risks that confront contemporary financial markets.

This illuminating book reveals how place, power and data shape understandings of poverty in a rapidly changing world. Interdisciplinary experts demonstrate that poverty is not only an economic condition, but a spatial, political and environmental one.

Combining various data types, survey data, satellite imagery and historical records, the chapters illustrate how a person's life chances and development outcomes can be determined through geography, via access to infrastructure, environmental risk and governance. They explore key topics ranging from colonial legacies to the use of artificial intelligence, calling for more transparent and context-sensitive approaches to measuring progress, especially where data is scarce or politically restricted. Contributors advocate for a spatially-informed and justice-oriented research agenda that bridges science, policy and practice to build resilience and dignity across diverse communities.

The Geography of Poverty is an essential resource for scholars and students of human geography, development studies and social policy. Governance policymakers and environmental scientists will similarly benefit from its actionable insights and political depth.

This book offers a pioneering and comprehensive examination of entrepreneurial leadership as an emerging and transformative approach to leadership theory and practice. Moving beyond traditional leadership models that emphasise innate personality traits and end outcomes, this book advances a dynamic, holistic perspective that foregrounds leadership development across diverse and often underexplored organisational contexts, including corporations, higher education institutions, and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Addressing the fragmented nature of existing scholarship, this book consolidates theoretical and empirical perspectives on entrepreneurial leadership, outlining its core attributes, antecedents, and developmental pathways. It adopts a multi-level lens, examining entrepreneurial leadership development at the individual, team, and organisational levels, and proposes practical development strategies such as experiential, reflective, and social learning, leadership development programmes, and digital and e-learning platforms.

A defining strength of this book lies in its integration of theory with practice. It identifies key entrepreneurial leadership capabilities and illustrates their application through practical case studies. This book also critically engages with contemporary challenges, incorporating ethics, contextual diversity, and technological orientation in an AI-driven world. It bridges theory and practice, offers actionable insights, and provides a roadmap for developing entrepreneurial leaders equipped to navigate complexity, uncertainty, and change in the twenty-first century.

We live in a society that valorises speech and treats silence as a harm to be broken. This assumption runs especially deep in mental health discourse, where silence is both medicalised - as a symptom and as a cause - and targeted by campaigns urging people to open up. Silence in Mood Disorders challenges the dominant understanding of silence in mental illness, arguing that it is not only conceptually impoverished but potentially damaging to the very people it claims to help.

Drawing on first-person accounts of depression and bipolar disorder alongside phenomenology, social epistemology, and silence studies, this book shows that silence in mood disorders is a far more diverse and complex phenomenon than prevailing assumptions allow. To make sense of this diversity, the book develops a set of interconnected conceptual resources for thinking about silence. Central among these is an account of silence as a fragile, embodied, and epistemically significant human capacity, whose disruption may take different forms in depression and mania. These resources are then used to suggest how mental health research, clinical practice, policy, and activism might respond to silence with greater care and discernment.

Silence in Mood Disorders will appeal to scholars and advanced students in philosophy of psychiatry, phenomenology, and social epistemology, and will reward anyone working in mental health research, the medical humanities, or disability studies.

Deciphering the Hidden Meaning presents a transformative history of one of the most significant ideas in Indian philosophy: liberation. Taking the great philosopher Sa?kara as the focal point, Aleksandar Uskokov analyzes the relationship between liberation, language, and scripture. While modern portraits of Sa?kara often cast him as a mystic or a religious reformer, the book paints a more complex portrait of the historical Sa?kara. As a theologian of liberation, Sa?kara was a maverick within the prevailing Brahmanical ideology of his time. In an intellectual landscape dominated by Mima?sa ritualists and Vedantic practitioners of meditation, Sa?kara introduced a radical claim: that the para? sreyas ("highest good") is attained not through action, ritual, or prolonged meditation, but through the immediate, intellectual understanding of the Upani?adic identity statements. Uskokov shows that the birth of the maha-vakya or "great statement"--such as tat tvam asi ("You are That")--was not the work of Sa?kara himself, but rather his tenth-century follower Sarvajnatman who used the structural logic of the Mima?sa school. The book meticulously traces the evolution of this soteriological model, exploring how early Advaitins navigated complex debates over language, ritual causality, and the nature of the Self. In doing so, it argues that Sa?kara's most significant contribution was his intervention against Vedic theologians who viewed scripture as a guide for action and meditation rather than primarily informative. • Presents institutions, interaction, organization, innovation and evolution as basic categories of a symbiotic research design

This book explores constructions of the "good mother" within diverse nations and nationalisms, focusing on three contexts grappling with distinct forms of "demographic anxiety." Inspired by Sara Farris' inquiry into femonationalism and utilizing "maternalism" and "politics of care" as critical theoretical instruments, the book analyses the evolving political and social expectations imposed upon mothers in Lithuania, migrant mothers, including postsocialist migrant mothers from Central Asia and Caucasus in Sweden, and women in the militarizing authoritarian Russian state's construction of maternity within its "traditional values" agenda. It also probes both how "good motherhood" is enacted and contested by individual mothers, as well as how it is mobilized in resisting conservative, ethnonationalist tendencies (in Sweden) and militarism (in the case of Russia). The book's chapters illuminate the roles of political and social actors engaged with renegotiating materialist politics-such as grassroots birth activist movements and maternalist social policy campaigns-as well as those defying militarism.

Rented Worlds examines the hidden yet ubiquitous world of bedsits, boarding houses, service flats, subdivided terraces, and other forms of private rented housing that continued to dominate post-war London, numerically as well as culturally, well into the 1960s.

While the rise of council housing and suburban homeownership have both been thoroughly documented, it was this other kind of housing - declining yet highly contested - that formed the ideological substrate of many key debates about the post-war politics of welfare, 'race,' class, and gender. Covering from the end of the Second World War to the end of the first post-war Conservative government, and drawing on a range of untapped archival sources, including rent tribunals, valuation lists, exhibitions, and photography, the book traces a sequence of specific 'problems' as they coincided with key moments in post-war British history: from the 1946 squatting movement and the problem of displacement after the Blitz; to the question of social isolation and new policies around mental health; to the chronic issue of overcrowding and a growing fire safety crisis in inner London.

Told through the experience of tenants and proprietors, this new history of post-war London challenges architectural history's ability to account for the unexpected after-lives of built spaces; spaces that were re-made from the inside out through processes of speculation, regulation, and grassroots spatial practices.

This book explores Frantz Fanon's political ideas on colonial violence and the counter-violence it provokes. Through Fanon's lens, colonialism is revealed as inherently violent, sustained by the forceful domination of Indigenous peoples and incapable of existing without violence. It argues that Fanon's concept of counter-violence is a direct and inevitable response to colonial violence. It demonstrates colonialism as an enduring system of exploitation that continues to be benefited by the Global North at the expense of the Global South, even after these states have become independent. The book argues that genuine decolonization cannot be achieved through negotiation or compromise but requires the transformative power of counter-violence. It also explores the broader implications of this resistance, including its
connection to self-defense, retaliation, and the creation of a new humanism in colonized societies. By engaging with Fanon's political imagination and comparing his ideas with other revolutionary thinkers, this book provides a critical framework for understanding the complexities of decolonization and resistance. It is an essential read for those seeking to grasp the enduring impact of colonialism and the revolutionary paths toward genuine liberation. The volume will be of interest to all oppressed peoples wherever they are in the world and especially to scholars and researchers of political philosophy, political ideologies, violence and war studies, colonialism and decolonization, and African studies.

This volume showcases how visual war journalism has emerged as a critical framework in digital journalism studies, portraying how it can enrich our understanding of news imagery in the contexts of ongoing wars, conflicts and crises.

Examinations of global newscapes recurrently bring to light incidents where visual war journalists are working in harm's way, striving to record what they see unfolding before them, often at considerable personal risk. News organisations' incessant demand for compelling imagery continues to intensify while, at the same time, the relative safety for those producing it is becoming ever more precarious. Taken together, this volume's articles amount to an intervention, one striving to foster dialogue and debate about visual war journalism's trajectories today to encourage alternative, critical thought about future prospects within the field. Each article speaks to what is a major escalation in the crisis of precarity over the right to bear witness, including when covering ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as the civil protests against authoritarian control that are waging over imagery. Visual war journalism may empower us to empathise, to see the lived embodiment of humanity in the devastating consequences reported across news and social media sites, and thereby compel us to recognise our moral responsibilities and respond accordingly.

This volume will be an important resource for students and scholars of journalism, photojournalism, media studies and war studies. The articles were first published as a special issue of Digital Journalism, and are accompanied by three new, peer-reviewed articles and a revised Introduction.

The analysis of newly or recently emerged grammatical and lexical forms in Colloquial Singapore English is the main objective of this Element. Using corpus, survey, and interview data from different age groups, we shed light on the spread of language change across generations and ethnicities. Existing descriptions of CSE as a high-contact L1 variety of English in the late stages of endonormative stabilisation do not fully capture Singapore's continued multilingual ecology: source languages remain in active use alongside CSE, enabling ongoing cross-linguistic influence. Innovative uses resulting from contact can be observed in apparent and real time. In this volume, we use a range of sources to look at recent changes in the lexicon and grammar of CSE, pointing to a dynamic variety that is difficult to fully capture with existing models of variation. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

This Practical Guide provides a foundational overview of the evolving application of EU competition law to sport, combining comprehensive analysis with practical guidance.

Estelle Ivanova and Ian Blackshaw explain how EU competition law shapes sports governance, examining its principles, scope, extraterritorial reach, enforcement and judicial dialogue, and its interaction with fundamental freedoms, human rights and international sports arbitration.

Key Features:

  • Analyses the dual role of sports governing bodies as regulators and economic operators in organising and commercialising competitions

Unlocking the Potential of Sustainable Finance explores how financial markets, instruments and banks can mobilise urgently needed investments for the climate transition. It examines whether sustainability-linked bonds reach the companies with the biggest impact potential, how banks can adapt financing solutions to different business sizes and sectors, and how instruments must evolve for SMEs and firms relying on traditional bank-based financing. Combining data-driven analysis with insights from the financial and real economy, it highlights challenges, opportunities, and solutions for unlocking the potential of sustainable finance and thereby securing a resilient, climate-neutral economy. Dr. Isabelle Hinsche-McLardy is a finance and sustainability expert with a PhD in Economics and Sustainable Finance from Goethe University Frankfurt. She completed her studies in the Netherlands, the USA, and Germany. Her work focuses on topics related to the energy and sustainability transition, in particular sustainable finance, where she advises on how financial markets and instruments can support a successful sustainability transformation. As pointed out by the editors of this unusual volume, studying the development of contemporary Spain is important to understand the challenges, dynamics and limits of political and economic modernization. The contributors of Twisted Modernization bring the theoretical and methodological toolkit of modern political economy to study Spain's long run economic (industrialization) and institutional (capacity, constitutions) processes, the evolution of its economic, political and judicial elites, and how the country's institutional legacies condition its democracy and economic outcomes to this day. Including work from over a dozen of well-known specialists and grounded in novel and systematic data, this volume provides a sober assessment of both the country's achievements and worrying future challenges. It offers key insights on the causes of democratization and growth in general and provides a model for further research on the trajectories of other countries. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

This book explores the human rights accountability of non-universally recognized states, unlawful entities that exercise effective control over territories, and sui generis subjects and territories when they exercise state-like powers. As they exercise these powers, they can affect the enjoyment of rights just as any recognized state could. But because of the indeterminate nature of these actors' international legal status or lack of sufficient recognition to join international organisations, it is not always clear what human rights obligations they hold, what secondary rules of state responsibility apply to them, and how other international actors - including international organizations - should engage with them on issues of accountability. Overall, the book seeks to question whether the current doctrine of international subjectivity is adequate to provide for accountability for the acts of state-like entities. It also intends to delve into the strategic use of legal subjectivity by international actors, and its consequences for human rights accountability.

Combining legal theory with case studies, contributing authors challenge the traditional state-centred approach of international human rights law by highlighting gaps in protection. They address accountability broadly and analyse legal responsibility and monitoring alongside less formal mechanisms. Concluding that human rights accountability cannot depend solely on formal statehood, the book proposes that wherever authorities hold power over people's lives, they must be assessed against human rights standards.

Insightful and thought-provoking, this book is a vital resource for scholars, policy makers and students of human rights law, public international law, international politics and public policy. It will benefit anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the implementation of human rights in non-universally recognised states and state-like entities.

Doing Qualitative Research Critically: Disruptive Practices and New Materialist Entanglements interrogates practices of doing qualitative research in the social sciences. It inspires researchers to think differently about doing qualitative research and entering into contact with emergent methodologies of gathering, analysing, and writing about social and organisational events.

In advancing the critical agenda of qualitative methodologies, the authors introduce theoretical perspectives, such as poststructuralism, posthumanism, and feminist new materialism, to disrupt mainstream methodologies and develop more affirmative engagements with human/non-human relationalities. The problematisation of qualitative research is achieved through introducing art pieces (painting, sculpture, architecture, poetry, and film) to engage the reader at different levels: to generate emotions, and to provoke thoughts and reflections on the ethical and political character of qualitative research.

This engaging book is an essential read for research students and researchers across the social sciences and humanities, interested in exploring the landscape of critical qualitative methodologies and experimenting with doing research differently.

Amid global dialogue on the nature of human enhancement, this book traces humanity's pursuit of self- transcendence and enhancement from ancient times to the present, as reflected in diverse traditions across the globe.

The book examines how the term 'transhuman' can move beyond its scientific and technological origins by linking it to ideas, symbols, and practices of transcending human limits found in Asian and global religions and philosophies, including spiritual practices. It critically explores human enhancement in its various forms and considers the potential for complementarity or cooperation between traditions by situating perspectives on the Divine Human and the Transhuman within a comprehensive conceptual framework. Chapters delve into Indian Tantric, Yogic, and Buddhist Tantric views on enhancement, highlighting the intersections and divergences between transhumanist ideas and enhancement discourses in world philosophies and religions. Ultimately, the book argues that many religions in Asia and beyond emphasize the desire to transcend human limits, addressing life enhancement both spiritually and physically and advancing a philosophy of self-transcendence that embraces the physical nature of human existence.

By bridging perspectives from scholars of Indic spirituality, Buddhist tantric, and transhumanist philosophical discourse, the book facilitates the ability for mutual understanding and will be of use to researchers studying philosophy of religion, Asian philosophy, the philosophy of science, and philosophical anthropology. Those working in the fields of posthumanism and transhumanism studies will also find the volume useful.

The book challenges the narrative of a democratized “New Space” era by showing how the global space landscape is shaped by entrenched and exacerbated power asymmetries. Using a structural lens on power, it reveals a select club of corporate actors ? based in the Global North and rooted in the miliary-defense sector ? that continues to dominate space governance. Instead of democratizing space, the commercialization of the earth orbits has exacerbated power asymmetries, allowing established players to shape favorable environmentalities through networks of membership and sponsorship. By demonstrating that “New Space” is, in essence, “Old Powers,” the book offers a critical rethinking of space governance.

Politics of Feminist New Materialisms at Music Playschools: Musicking in the Middle examines how feminist new materialist politics unfold within diverse music playschool practices in Finland.

Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork across five distinct groups - including sessions for babies, asylum seekers, deaf and hard-of-hearing children, and children with disabilities - the book explores how affirmative politics intersect with restrictive forces of power. By analysing the simultaneity of limiting and empowering forces of power, it situates feminist new materialisms within ongoing conversations about intersectionalities, their dynamic transformations and mutual impact of human and more-than-human elements in the formation of differences. The study discusses the concepts of the middle and middling as methodological and political tools by attuning to human languages, movement, silence, vibrations, and rhythms within musical encounters.

Politics of Feminist New Materialisms at Music Playschools: Musicking in the Middle is of interest for scholars and students in feminist theory, gender studies, new materialisms, (ethno)musicology, ethnographic methods, childhood studies, and early music education.
