This edited volume explores how global issues such as urbanisation, globalisation, digital practice, and global warming are experienced and interpreted by young people in their local contexts. Drawing on research from 13 countries and 20 study sites, this volume examines how adolescents perceive urban space and how their environments shape their daily lives. The broader research in this volume builds upon participatory action research practices and principles that aim to empower young people by giving them a voice and supporting their agency in decision making. These approaches are used to advocate for youth health and wellbeing in contemporary urban contexts across Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Germany, Lebanon, Nepal, the Netherlands, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Nigeria, the Philippines and the United States of America. The research project focuses on low-income communities undergoing rapid change, examining ways to engage minority and youth populations in informal settlements who are particularly reliant on the resources of their immediate environments and whose circumstances hold significant implications for urban policy. Providing a broad-ranging and comparative perspective on young people's experience of urban life, this volume offers valuable insights for students, researchers, social workers and policymakers concerned with youth wellbeing, urban and community development and related fields.

An accessible primer on aesthetics in art and everyday life, written by artist and scholar Walead Beshty.

In this general guide to the foundations of aesthetics, Walead Beshty introduces the complexities of aesthetics through succinct language and real-world examples, presenting an introductory theory of how the world becomes known to us through our senses and how that knowledge in turn builds our experience of everything around us.

Considering aesthetics on both a practical and a theoretical level, Worlds of Appearance asserts that art and aesthetics are inherently political, composing a fundamental form of communication and a means by which we can imagine the very nature of what can be experienced, sensed, and expressed. Aesthetics, argues Beshty, is a corporeal and material area of study, one that reveals how we perceive the world and how we develop technologies in response. With this book, he aims to fill a gap in existing writing about aesthetics, offering a clear explanation of how it acts as a dynamic force in our daily lives, how it functions on a concrete level, and how we can understand its possibilities.

Beginning with how we transform a flood of sensations into a coherent perception of the world, the book considers the basics of aesthetic production and reception, then moves on to look at specific examples of aesthetics in practice, with a focus on art, architecture, and performance. It concludes by laying out how aesthetic literacy is key to understanding the production of wide-ranging aspects of our lives, including digitization, mass media, systems of communications, and power relations.

Sleep medicine and dream science have long been dominated by empirical approaches. Volume 2 of this handbook highlights emerging theories of sleep disorders and the role of social and environmental factors in sleep health, showing how conceptual models guide effective application of empirical work. Featuring contributions from leading experts, chapters examine mechanisms of sleep regulation, functions of sleep and dreaming, and present diverse frameworks side by side, outlining core assumptions, mechanisms, and implications before addressing deeper complexities. Designed for students, researchers, and clinicians across sleep science, neuroscience, psychology, biology, and medicine, the handbook invites critical engagement with models and reflection on how they shape contemporary understanding and research.

Public toilets determine who gets everyday dignity, freedom of movement, and civic belonging-and who doesn't.

Americans have nowhere to go. Nationwide, countless public spaces lack one crucial thing: bathrooms, never mind ones that are safe and functional. Yet in the past, political leaders celebrated the opening of public bathrooms with boisterous press conferences and showy ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

For Customers Only is the first book to tell the larger history of public bathrooms in the United States, a fascinating story characterized by persistent discrimination, squeamishness about unknown bodies, and disinvestment in public amenities. Acclaimed writer and historian Bryant Simon argues that restrooms aren't only an architectural feature, but an emblem of control and inequality. In the late nineteenth century, cities vied for the newest and biggest comfort stations to meet the demands of their bustling economies and accommodate a broad and growing public. They built restrooms with gold-domed entrances and ornamented stall doors to inspire cleanliness and order.

But officials soon grew anxious about who might take advantage of this privacy: gay men, the unhoused, and eventually drug users. And as the civil rights movement challenged segregation, officials in the north and south closed public toilets rather than integrate them. By the end of the twentieth century, only people with means could use private bathrooms while out and about-provided they made a purchase at a business. Today, as the fights over trans rights reveal, bathroom access remains a flash point across the country. Meanwhile, some municipalities are again calling for widely available public toilets, but as a tool for economic revitalization, not a public necessity.

The political and cultural history of a squirm-inducing subject, For Customers Only reveals the real and symbolic power of the most ordinary of things. Bathrooms, Simon shows, have always reflected our fragmented national values. Whether these spaces will ever become more accessible and inclusive is ultimately up to us.

This research monograph investigates the immediate effects of peer feedback on text revisions and the long-term effects of peer feedback on writing performance. It also examines students' processing of peer feedback in revision and explores their perceptions of peer feedback. Peer feedback, an activity in which learners read others' drafts and make comments on them orally and/or in written mode, is widely employed in English as a foreign/second language (L2) writing instruction. Extensive studies investigating its effects have been conducted, and yet very few studies have examined how the effects take place and whether the effects sustain. To address the research gaps, this book reports a rigorous peer feedback intervention conducted during a semester-long College English course at a Chinese university. This research yields a deep understanding of the effects of peer feedback and provides an example of how a mixed methods approach can be employed in second language writing research. This book is a valuable research resource for researchers, practitioners and policymakers on an international scale.

Notable historians delve into the brass tacks of launching and sustaining federal agencies.

Critics regularly complain that the United States government can't do big things. While their explanations differ, there is now a growing sense that American institutions are not delivering solutions to the problems of our time. The New Deal offers a striking contrast. During the 1930s, the United States created a wealth of new agencies, departments, offices, and programs-and in very short order.

This illuminating collection brings together leading American historians to offer fifteen detailed accounts of how this remarkable expansion of state capacity actually happened. From the Civilian Conservation Corps to the Rural Electrification Administration to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the authors dig into the nuts and bolts of how exactly the New Dealers did so much all at once. They detail the choices before state builders who, operating under the pressure and immediacy of the era, made decisions that held even greater consequences in the longer term.

In a time when federal agencies are under stress like never before, the contributors offer critical insights about what future administrations can learn from the New Deal's extraordinary achievements and how they can build state capacity and deliver for Americans once again.

Features contributions by W. Tanner Allread, Mary Bridges, Brent Cebul, Sarah E. Igo, Meg Jacobs, Richard R. John, Neil M. Maher, Sharon Ann Musher, Sarah T. Phillips, Kathryn Olmsted and Eric Rauchway, Alex Platt, Jason Scott Smith, Ganesh Sitaraman, Abby Spinak, Chloe Thurston, and Mason B. Williams.

This one-hundred-year history of the island of Guahan, also known as Guam, charts how Indigenous CHamorus and Filipino migrants navigated and negotiated the expansion of US imperialism and militarism in the Pacific. Throughout the twentieth century, CHamorus and Filipinos living in Guahan expressed their discontent with the inequities created by the US empire. Instead of partaking in outright anticolonial movements, they advocated for liberal solutions such as individual rights, land ownership, economic opportunities, and US citizenship. Unraveling this entangled history, Kristin Oberiano exposes the limitations of liberalism in anticolonial resistance.

Tracing the long history of CHamoru-Filipino relations, from the exile of Filipino revolutionaries to Guahan to the burgeoning CHamoru self-determination movement, Territorial Discontent grapples with the varied motives that propelled CHamorus and Filipinos to rely on the limited liberal promise of freedom. Oberiano reveals that implementing these solutions for one group too often required the continued colonization of the other, entrenching US colonialism in Guahan and enflaming tensions between CHamorus and Filipinos. Examining these antagonisms, Oberiano argues that building relationships with the CHamoru virtue of inafa'maolek-"to make good"-can nurture CHamoru-Filipino solidarities and illuminate alternative possibilities for Guahan's ongoing decolonization movement.

By building knowledge in a deliberate and systematic manner, we can gain a more complete understanding of a given research area relevant to corpus linguists. Specifically, empirically informed hypotheses (i.e., hypotheses that result from a synthesis of findings from all relevant prior studies) play a key role in this endeavor in that they enable us to test to what extent generalizations from previous research are consistent with our results, or if we need to make adjustments to our existing knowledge or theory. In this Element, we aim to provide a practical and accessible introduction to select statistical methods for evaluating such empirically informed hypotheses. In particular, we illustrate techniques from the broader null-hypothesis significance testing framework (e.g., equivalence testing), and structural equation modeling framework (e.g., measured variable path analysis), with the goal of encouraging knowledge building in a more principled and systematic manner in corpus linguistics.

How material conditions and social contradictions remake indigeneity

Indigenous studies struggles to analyze class, yet class reshapes the cultural, political, and economic terrain of indigeneity. In Red Dirt, Ikaika Ramones goes beyond the usual conceptual frameworks of resistance and domination to explore the political-economic basis for Native Hawaiian social reproduction and revitalization. By doing so, he casts indigeneity as a contested process rather than reification, encompassing both grassroots revitalization efforts and large, multibillion-dollar Native organizations.

Ramones offers a class analysis that shifts the theorization of indigeneity away from the metaphysical and idealist methodologies of the academy to trace social contradictions and material conditions instead. He counters the notion of Native culture as a coherent given, disentangling different strains of "Native Hawaiian culture"-an elite strain that depoliticizes and buttresses the status quo and grassroots strains that politicize and produce critical consciousness. Amid movements of cultural revitalization, he shows how histories of racialized eugenics rearticulate into a form of "class assimilation." By examining organizations that support, shape, and constrain Native Hawaiians, Ramones shows how actors appropriate, protect, or rearticulate economic and social relations within or against capitalism. While mired in capitalism and settler colonialism, he argues, Indigenous actors walk shifting lines of subversion and complicity.

This open access edited volume brings together original perspectives on the important topic of educational integration of refugees and newly arrived immigrants and discusses implications for policymakers and practitioners. It highlights that, despite significant migration movements in recent years, the body of research addressing school integration processes and the role of regulations and laws remains limited. These factors are considered important for early adaptation, long-term acculturation, and the overall integration of newly arrived immigrants.

The volume brings together qualitative and quantitative studies on educational participation in primary and secondary education as well as in vocational education and training. It also examines the challenges involved in acquiring second-language proficiency and achieving success across a range of school subjects. It explores the institutional conditions for the educational integration of refugees and newly arrived immigrants (particularly access to education, academic achievement, and attainment) across different host countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Sweden. It offers valuable insights and discusses potential implications for researchers studying educational opportunities of immigrant youth, as well as for policymakers and policy advisors.

This book contributes to the current research area by achieving an understanding of the organization of our academic activities and by finding evidence for the generic conditioning of texts on the linguistic strata. Drawing on a functional theory, the current study selects naturally occurring abstracts in journal articles from a variety of academic disciplines, viz. linguistics, economics, science, management, and geography. The aim is to find out how the linguistic realizations of a text enact the purpose of a discourse in certain institutionalized academic settings. The result of the study could be incorporated into the language learning classroom and benefit especially those students who are learning to write academic papers. Through reading this proposed book, target readers may be better informed of the "generic expectations" of research paper abstracts.

How the police in Minneapolis used electoral politics to accrue power and avoid accountability.

The 2020 murder of George Floyd made Minneapolis synonymous with unjust policing and the pain and outrage left in its wake. The city became ground zero for police reform in the United States-even though liberal politicians in Minnesota had promised, and delivered, police reforms for decades. Centered on professionalization, these changes inadvertently exacerbated injustice. Better training and higher standards broadened the influence of the police, who then claimed expertise in public safety. They deployed it to bargain for governmental support, even when they treated residents unfairly. Though Black, Indigenous, and gay residents resisted, the political power amassed by the police rendered real change almost impossible.

In A Police State, historian and fourth-generation Minneapolis resident Michael J. Lansing chronicles how the police became a political force in one of the nation's most liberal cities. Lansing shows how, in the years after World War II, public safety policies that appealed to voters in the overwhelmingly white city protected and expanded police discretion. As union members, administrators, and citizens, officers shaped these policies to shield themselves and their violent actions from scrutiny. They campaigned for better wages, secured legal safeguards, resisted race-neutral policing, and elected one of their own to the mayor's office. Ultimately, they used democratic institutions to cultivate and sustain a police state that protected white people and harmed people of color. Lansing uncovers this dysfunctional relationship between a city and its cops while illuminating a larger American story about reform, resistance, and democracy.

A significant exploration of policing politics, this book helps us understand the history that led to George Floyd's murder-and insists that the future of community safety depends on reenvisioning the role of police in our society.

This book offers a nuanced and original analysis of the complex relationship between Islam and the state in post-Soviet Uzbekistan. Situating religious revival within the country's historical, political, and social transformations, it reveals the paradoxical dynamics that have shaped contemporary Islamic life. The study traces how state efforts to promote "official Islam" while repressing "unofficial" expressions have produced unintended consequences, including the radicalization of some believers. By illuminating the dialectical tensions between governance, control, and religious agency, the book provides a groundbreaking account of the power struggles that define Uzbekistan's religious and political landscape. Drawing on historical materials and contemporary data from previously inaccessible sources, it makes a significant contribution to the sociology of religion, political sociology, social scientific studies of Islam, and political science.

Literature of Absence explores the literary representations of wartime atrocities and the Holocaust in Hungary from 1945 to the late 1950s. In the immediate aftermath of World War II, survivor accounts, diverse in genre, perspective, and literary value, came to light as testimonies, novels and short stories, anthologies, and stage plays. These accounts appeared predominantly during the first three postwar years but diminished in frequency thereafter. The absence reinforced a preconception that still persists today, that there was a general silence about the Holocaust in postwar Hungary. Tamas Kisantal resolves this absence with a critical examination of the first survivor testimonies, humor in early Holocaust writings, the notion of the "martyr writer," and the challenges of addressing and representing Hungarian responsibility-not only that of former politicians and leaders, but also that of ordinary people. Ultimately, Literature of Absence examines how the recent past was represented within the framework of anti-Fascist literature and how certain works attempted to transcend these generic and ideological constraints in order to articulate their own approach to the Hungarian Holocaust.

This book explores the potential of relational research as a creative and participatory endeavor to produce knowledge. Bringing together insights from social construction, intersectional feminist frameworks, decolonial practices, queer theories, and queer worldmaking, it prompts researchers to reimagine the theoretical underpinnings and methodological choices that shape their work. In doing so, it cultivates a community of practice in which scholars engage the complex terrain of research to advance plural and inclusive forms of knowing.

This edited collection offers a global perspective on what knowledge is and how it is created, situating research practices within diverse cultural, disciplinary, and relational contexts through contributions from authors from different corners of the world. It illustrates methods that support navigating pressing global challenges, such as sustainability transitions, the surge of populism, and the enduring legacies of colonialism, racial, gendered, and sexual marginalization. An ideal resource for those interested in applying decolonial, inclusive, and interdisciplinary relational research methods, it offers students and researchers concrete ways to engage with inquiry as a situated and relational practice.

An unparalleled portrait of nineteenth-century social reform and the magnetic oratory that gave it force, told through the career of temperance advocate John B. Gough

John B. Gough was perhaps nineteenth-century America's most famous ex-drunkard-a man who had hit rock bottom but then found the determination to recover and preach sobriety with unusual scope and impact. Through an exploration of Gough's life, Thomas Augst investigates a world in which a public speaker could achieve immense fame by delivering a remarkable 12,000 popular lectures over his lifetime across the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. Gough kept a voluminous archive of his comings and goings, day after day, speech after speech. Augst is among the first scholars to fully mine these materials, and he uses them to illuminate the redemptive power of storytelling in the lives of citizens. In the process, A Drunkard's Story follows an itinerant journey through the cultural history of social reform.

John Gough's life was fascinating in its own right, but Augst's exploration of it also opens a window onto a rich interplay among performance, autobiography, and celebrity. The ways that people flocked to hear Gough tell his tale, and the contagious enthusiasm with which he was greeted far and wide, might seem from another time-but also surprisingly contemporary in the age of the influencer.

This Festschrift, featuring twenty contributions from international colleagues and companions, comprises three topics that have significantly determined Ute Franke‘s career: “Archaeological Fieldwork and Syntheses”, “The World of Museums” and “History and History of Art”. They present analyses of archaeological field projects in different geographical regions, discuss questions of cultural preservation, museums’ objects, provenance issues as well as modern forms of museum access, and give personal impressions of individual regions. This broad range of themes reflects the diverse research interests of the honoree, whose expertise lies not only in archaeological field research in Pakistan and Afghanistan, but also in the museum sector, where Franke has curated various important exhibitions on the Near and Middle East at the Museum of Islamic Art (Berlin). Many contributions highlight the significance of the Middle East for the humanities ? an important aspect that often threatens to be forgotten in light of the present political situation, which currently limits access to this region for archaeological research.

The book argues that, in line with the latest research results and the author's educational experience, the existing, positive image of a second and foreign language (L2) teacher seems to be no longer valid. There is a strong need to dispel some of the commonly existing beliefs concerning the teaching profession by providing a thorough and multi-faceted account of issues connected with this field. This is in line with the assumption that shedding more light onto L2 educators' actual status is a great significance for creating a more realistic image of these educators who have to constantly cope with new and old challenges. Modern education systems in many countries are constantly evolving in the face of growing teacher shortages and low attractiveness of the profession. Therefore, there seems to be an urgent need to develop a better understanding of the well-being of teachers and its implications for L2 teaching and learning. This book presents a comprehensive conceptual framework to analyze teachers' well-being and its influence on the quality of their professional performance. The book is of significance and relevance not only to L2 educators and L2 teacher trainers, but also to students and university graduates who are considering becoming teachers in the future. The content of the book is a valuable asset for policy makers who are interested in creating meaningful and efficient working conditions for those who are teachers and those who plan to become satisfied and motivated educators in the future.

Originally published in 2020, Jim Crow Sociology is a lauded history of how "Black sociology" came into existence. Diving into the history of four historically Black colleges and universities and their roles in pioneering a new intellectual field, Earl Wright II argues that the roots of sociology lie not in the primarily white Ivies but in HBCUs. Wright's work is foundational in tracing the roots of sociology at distinct institutions. Tuskegee Institute, for example, established the first program of applied rural sociology under the leadership of Booker T. Washington. Fisk University, under the guidance of first George Edmund Haynes and then Charles S. Johnson, developed one of the earliest and most influential programs of applied urban sociology. The history of W. E. B. Du Bois's Atlanta Sociological Laboratory reveals the contributions of women to the first American school of sociology.

In exploring the histories of these institutions and programs, Wright upends old ideas about the roots of an academic discipline and makes the case that sociology began in the United States as a Black and Southern enterprise.

Seven years after the US Civil War and nearly 150 years before COVID, horses near Toronto began falling deathly ill with a sickness soon diagnosed as influenza. It took just a few weeks for this mutant flu variant to spread throughout southeastern Canada and into the northeastern US, infecting more than 90 percent of horses, donkeys, and mules wherever it struck. By the time the outbreak relented more than a year later, the Great Horse Flu of 1872 to 1873 had convulsed nearly every corner of North America and parts of Cuba, Mexico, and Central America.

This little-known scourge paralyzed the continent's horse-powered economy at a critical political moment. As hundreds of thousands of animals died and entire cities ground to a halt, the outbreak exposed the fragility of industrial capitalism and the US's deep dependence on animal labor. The Great Horse Flu triggered catastrophes including the Great Boston Fire; unleashed seething social and racial conflict; stoked partisan divides; and set the stage for the Panic of 1873. In the hands of Bancroft Prize-winning historian Thomas G. Andrews, the gripping story of this animal plague becomes a revelatory history of American Reconstruction itself-its possibilities, limitations, and demise-while also illuminating the grave perils that novel viral variants pose to animals, humans, and the world we share.

An electrifying narrative history that reframes Britain's constitutional revolution as a full-scale Dutch invasion

In popular accounts of the Glorious Revolution of 1688, the autocratic Catholic King James II was ousted by his subjects and replaced by his Protestant daughter Mary Stuart, wife of James's nephew, the Dutch William III of Orange. Devoted to her husband, Mary would not accept the crown alone, and so William and Mary were crowned together, securing a smooth dynastic succession. The Last Invasion of England recounts the forgotten campaign that carried William and his army to English shores and led directly to James's fall, bringing a revolutionary age vividly to life-and rewriting the history of Britain, Europe and the transatlantic world more widely.

In this bold work of revisionist history, Arthur der Weduwen tells the momentous story of the Dutch Armada, describing the immense risks and near failures of the last seaborne invasion of England-which occurred exactly one hundred years after the defeat of the Spanish Armada. The sixteen thousand Dutch troops who accompanied William were not on hand for moral support. They came with sword, musket and cannon. Der Weduwen argues that the political revolution in Britain could not have been achieved without the willpower, might and resources of William and the Dutch nation, and explains why the Dutch Republic, a small state that celebrated peace and commerce above all else, would dare to undertake a reckless preemptive military strike on its more powerful neighbour.

Transforming our understanding of the Glorious Revolution and Britain's ascendancy as a global powerhouse, The Last Invasion of England relies entirely on contemporary sources, many from leading protagonists who prepared and executed the invasion, evoking the historical realities of the women and men who lived during turbulent and uncertain times.
