Offers an accessible new way to think critically and transparently about how researchers, especially those doing ethnographic work, can balance their personal commitments with long-term research.
For ethnographers, spending a year or longer in a faraway place conducting fieldwork is becoming increasingly untenable due to competing life responsibilities and rising workloads, as well as disability, precarity, and geopolitical factors. If ethnographic methods are to remain relevant and viable for a diverse group of people in anthropology and beyond, Goekce Guenel and Chika Watanabe argue, we need to examine how our personal and professional lives intersect and shape one another.
In Patchwork Ethnography, Guenel and Watanabe take seriously the conditions that render long-term fieldwork difficult for so many. Without being prescriptive, the book offers concrete ways for scholars to unpack the competing commitments in their lives and make those challenges feel more manageable. Blending theoretical analysis with practical exercises, the authors guide readers to rethink the relationship between their personal lives and their scholarship. Ultimately, they point to ways for transforming limitations into catalysts for fresh insights. By highlighting how shifting labor and living conditions profoundly alter knowledge production, Patchwork Ethnography calls for a paradigm shift in ethnographic research.

From a prize-winning historian, the first comprehensive narrative history of Ashkenazi Jews: their culture, their religion, their daily lives, and their many migrations
Covering two millennia of history, from late antiquity to the twentieth century, this landmark volume by an eminent historian traces the long trajectory of Ashkenazi Jews, that branch of the Jewish people who migrated from the Levant into central and then eastern Europe. Because religion, in the form of rabbinic Judaism, played so central a role in the lives of almost all Jews before modernity, author Peter Schaefer examines the ways in which the institutions and practices of the rabbis were transplanted, and transformed, during these periods of migration. Schaefer describes the establishment and flourishing of centers of rabbinic learning and innovation in the new European homelands-places including Cologne, Frankfurt, Worms, and Troyes, the French home of the legendary medieval Talmudic sage Rashi. He discusses the long and often fraught period of intellectual, cultural, economic, and political exchange with the Christian majority, and chronicles such Jewish movements as kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), messianism (Sabbateanism) and (in the modern period) Jewish socialism ("Bundism") and Zionism.
The scope of Ashkenazi is vast, beginning with a portrait of Jews in the late Roman Empire and then mapping the first central European Jewish settlements in the tenth and eleventh centuries, the expulsions of the late fifteenth century, the subsequent migration to Russia, Lithuania, and Poland, followed by remigration westward in the nineteenth century after the start of Russian pogroms. Finally, Schaefer considers the impact of the Holocaust, and the founding of the state of Israel-which was spearheaded by Zionist leaders of largely Ashkenazi origins.

Founded in 1935, the New Farmers of America (NFA) was the first national organization for Black farm boys studying vocational agriculture at segregated public high schools across the South-and as far north as New Jersey. Sociologist and award-winning author Bobby J. Smith II charts new terrain in Black history by uncovering the hidden story of the organization, which grew to an annual membership of more than 55,000 members and empowered Black boys to challenge racial exclusion in agriculture by becoming farmers and pursuing careers in agriculture. But by 1965, the NFA had vanished-unraveled by a hostile takeover by the predominantly white Future Farmers of America (FFA). The NFA, and the generation of Black agricultural leaders it helped shape, were largely erased from the historical record.
In vivid prose, Smith confronts the haunting paradox of the NFA: an organization that transformed rural Black life yet remains almost entirely absent from American memory. Reconstructing the NFA's rise, influence, and disappearance, Black Farm Boys reshapes the history of the Black agricultural experience and restores a vital chapter in the story of education, rural life, and racial justice in the United States.

The Endurance of the Mare unravels the complex and layered histories of belonging and non-belonging that emerge from family archives shaped by classed, sexual, state, and border violence. It asks: How might retelling the past enable a radical transformation of the present? How do we grapple with the enduring legacies of systemic violence and intergenerational trauma without reenacting wounded attachments that justify nationalisms and further violence?
The book follows Pena, born in 1911 in the Budjak (then Russian Empire, now Ukraine), who in the 1930s travelled as a seasonal migrant worker to the Dobruja (Romania) and was forced to stay. Alyosxa Tudor traces Pena's life to examine how the trauma of migration, hunger, sexual violence, and heterosexual kinship travels across generations and national space. Mobilizing auto-theory, speculative fiction, and historical materialist analysis, Tudor proposes a paradigmatic intervention into transnational histories, memory discourse, and political responsibility. The book connects struggles from Eastern Europe to Palestine across feminist, queer, trans, and anti-racist movements. It rejects claims to epistemic innocence rooted in experiences of past violence and instead envisions different ways to politicize the present.

In the second edition of Higher Education Finance Research: Policy, Politics, and Practice readers will find a coherent presentation of the history, definitions of terms, sources of data, and applicable research methods. While maintaining the core concepts of the First Edition, this new edition augments discussions with advancements in policy and practice over the past decade. Chapters introduce new topics such as the value of higher education, dual enrolment and workforce training funding models, free college, and consumer perspectives on the price of college. Additionally, it expands the exploration of accountability in higher education to include college closures.
New features include 3 to 5 questions at the end of each chapter to support faculty. Chapters 8 and 9 have been completely revised to focus on the concepts of "value" in higher education and a student's view on affordability, respectively. Other chapters have been updated to reflect new approaches to funding and changes in understanding since the first edition.
Higher Education Finance Research: Policy, Politics, and Practice, Second Edition is designed to benefit not only students, professors, and practitioners but also policy analysts, legislative analysts, and others engaged in higher education finance at the state level.

Explores the institutional and environmental transformations that occurred during the Reconstruction Era.
While the Reconstruction Era in America saw a paradigmatic realignment of the country's core institutions and values, there was a physical quality to Reconstruction as well: the country was not only rebuilding the South after the Civil War, but flat-out building as it expanded westward.
In Reconstructors, John Dean Davis details how the Army Corps of Engineers and its subcontractors designed and redesigned the infrastructural landscape to support the republic's rebirth. The Corps' projects not only transformed the landscape; they created markets, fostered a distinctive expansionist culture, and-for a time-enacted a less discriminatory economic and social agenda across the South and West. Davis aims to bring federal power, environmentalism, and capitalism into a frame that reveals the landscape's power to further ideology.

When ChatGPT arrived, the authors responded as educators do, establishing policies, frameworks, and workshops. Everything looked right. Nothing felt adequate. That persistent unease became the starting point for What Is AI Doing to Us?, a philosophical inquiry into what artificial intelligence reveals about learning, thinking, and being. What came to light was unsettling. AI wasn't disrupting education; it was revealing what education had already become. Decades of well-intentioned improvements had quietly converted the struggle that builds understanding into procedures that algorithms could execute. We had all been preparing the ground for our own replacement. The question could no longer be what we can do with AI. It had to become what AI is doing to us.
Drawing on Heidegger's philosophy of technology, the authors trace how systematic thinking undermines the uncertainty and temporal complexity that make learning genuinely human. But this is no detached analysis. As the inquiry unfolds, they recognise themselves within the phenomenon they are examining-the boundary between their own thinking and algorithmic processing becoming increasingly difficult to locate. What begins as a study of AI in education becomes an encounter with the nature of technological thinking itself.
Essential reading for higher education instructors, leaders, and anyone concerned with the future of learning, What Is AI Doing to Us? bridges practical institutional challenges with profound philosophical insight, revealing why systematic responses consistently miss what matters most-and opening the space where authentic engagement becomes possible.

An electrifying narrative history that reframes Britain's constitutional revolution as a full-scale Dutch invasion
In popular accounts of the Glorious Revolution of 1688, the autocratic Catholic King James II was ousted by his subjects and replaced by his Protestant daughter Mary Stuart, wife of James's nephew, the Dutch William III of Orange. Devoted to her husband, Mary would not accept the crown alone, and so William and Mary were crowned together, securing a smooth dynastic succession. The Last Invasion of England recounts the forgotten campaign that carried William and his army to English shores and led directly to James's fall, bringing a revolutionary age vividly to life-and rewriting the history of Britain, Europe and the transatlantic world more widely.
In this bold work of revisionist history, Arthur der Weduwen tells the momentous story of the Dutch Armada, describing the immense risks and near failures of the last seaborne invasion of England-which occurred exactly one hundred years after the defeat of the Spanish Armada. The sixteen thousand Dutch troops who accompanied William were not on hand for moral support. They came with sword, musket and cannon. Der Weduwen argues that the political revolution in Britain could not have been achieved without the willpower, might and resources of William and the Dutch nation, and explains why the Dutch Republic, a small state that celebrated peace and commerce above all else, would dare to undertake a reckless preemptive military strike on its more powerful neighbour.
Transforming our understanding of the Glorious Revolution and Britain's ascendancy as a global powerhouse, The Last Invasion of England relies entirely on contemporary sources, many from leading protagonists who prepared and executed the invasion, evoking the historical realities of the women and men who lived during turbulent and uncertain times.

Pink Triangle Legacies traces the transformation of the pink triangle from a Nazi concentration camp badge and emblem of discrimination into a widespread, recognizable symbol of queer activism, pride, and community. W. Jake Newsome provides an overview of the Nazis' targeted violence against LGBTQ people and details queer survivors' fraught and ongoing fight for the acknowledgement, compensation, and memorialization of LGBTQ victims. Within this context, a new generation of queer activists has used the pink triangle - a reminder of Germany's fascist past - as the visual marker of gay liberation, seeking to end queer people's status as second-class citizens by asserting their right to express their identity openly.
The reclamation of the pink triangle occurred first in West Germany, but soon activists in the United States adopted this chapter from German history as their own. As gay activists on opposite sides of the Atlantic grafted pink triangle memories onto new contexts, they connected two national communities and helped form the basis of a shared gay history, indeed a new gay identity, that transcended national borders.
Pink Triangle Legacies illustrates the dangerous consequences of historical silencing and how the incorporation of hidden histories into the mainstream understanding of the past can contribute to a more inclusive experience of belonging in the present. There can be no justice without acknowledging and remembering injustice. As Newsome demonstrates, if a marginalized community seeks a history that liberates them from the confines of silence, they must often write it themselves.

What happens when the West interferes in the sexual politics of nations in the postcolonial Global South
Since the end of the Cold War, many Western nations have increasingly sought to integrate gay rights into their diplomacy, foreign policy, and international development programs. In The Great Refusal, Jason Ferguson examines what happens when pro-gay Western forces intervene in the sexual politics of countries around the world, especially in the postcolonial Global South. He finds that these interventions have unintended consequences, as the global clashes with the local. They create tension and divide nation-states from within, undermine local democratic structures and the collective conscience, and, paradoxically, fan the flames of resentment against the West, against gay rights, and against gay people.
Ferguson's mixed-method and multiscalar account of what he terms the "geopoliticization of homosexuality and gay rights" offers an in-depth analysis of a single case: Senegal, where attempted global intervention exacerbated the very problem it meant to solve. Drawing on a wide range of data, including ethnographies, archival materials, and literature, and moving among global, national, and subnational levels, Ferguson demonstrates how such uninvited interventions ultimately turn homosexuality into a vector through which local populations express their broader resentments against the West. Global interventionism, he argues, has turned same-sex loving people into scapegoats of the twenty-first century.

The 2024 Paris Olympics broke many records and had multiple highlights. It constituted the first Olympics with gender parity among athletes, had a special focus on sustainability, and showed record breaking performances including 32 new world records. The Games attracted more than 1 million spectators in different venues in and around Paris, and billions of spectators on TV across the globe. Without exaggeration, the Paris Games were the largest and most popular sports event of the year, and most likely the decade so far.
Yet the Paris Olympics were not only a sporting event. From its global scale, corporate sponsors and nationalistic symbols, to the controversies some aspects of the Games triggered, they were also an inherently political spectacle. Focusing particularly on the National Olympic Hospitality Houses and the ways in which global crises such as the wars in Gaza and Ukraine complicated the organization of the Games, this volume examines the political nature of the Paris Games from various perspectives. In doing so, it highlights the dualism between sports and politics, transparency and corruption, and peace and conflict.

This book illustrates the theoretical relevance of emotions to analyse and interpret contemporary events and societies. Emotions explain social phenomena while providing critical and analytical tools to challenge dominant or conventional interpretations of them. Drawing on examples of empirical research on emotions, it examines the long-standing sociological significance of emotions, some of the most recent theoretical and methodological advances, and the importance of fruitful interdisciplinary contaminations. The book will appeal to students, scholars, and professionals interested in the intersection of emotions, society, and social change.

A provocative account of how empire and absolutism institutionalized slavery in America
The original draft of the Declaration of Independence condemned British kings for supporting slavery in their empire. England's two seventeenth-century revolutions were in part a reaction to the crown's proslavery policies, with politicians such as John Locke arguing that all people were born equal and that government should be based on consent. But while these principles would underpin the American Revolution, the treaty that ended that war protected the legal foundations of the plantation system in the new republic. The King's Slaves untangles this thorny history, arguing that American slavery was borne from authoritarian rule.
In this incisive and thought-provoking book, Holly Brewer challenges the notion that slavery arose naturally in the colonies through the interests of merchants and planters, showing how behind them lay a British crown that believed in absolute power over subjects and granted similar powers to proprietors and masters. British kings used their authority over navies and armies, judges and royal governors to create an elaborate plantation system that produced more crops for export and greater wealth from tariffs. Royal propaganda supported claims that some peoples had no rights while edicts and proclamations circumvented the legislative process. Brewer describes how African and Indigenous peoples resisted the king's slavery, as did some colonists, English politicians, and reformers. Yet slavery persisted, becoming enshrined after independence as a dehumanizing legal foundation of American capitalism.
A bold work of scholarship by a historian at the height of her powers, The King's Slaves shares new perspectives on America's founding, exposing empire's pervasive role in spreading and justifying slavery in the new world.

How an ancient myth about a sexually voracious, baby-slaying, loudmouthed demoness became the defining misogynistic archetype of Western civilization
For as long as human societies have been telling stories, the patriarchy has felt threatened by women. In this book, Eleanor Johnson provides an engaging cultural history of a figure she calls the "monstrous bitch," the notorious female who has haunted the patriarchal imagination for centuries, feared for her sexual promiscuity, her exercise of reproductive agency and control, and her outspoken way of contesting patriarchal power.
In a narrative brimming with insight, Johnson traces the origins of female monstrosity to the demoness Lamashtu of ancient Mesopotamia, showing how this infanticidal, hypersexual, loudmouthed monster appears in different guises throughout history. In classical Greece, she reemerges as the sorceress Medea, the child-devouring monster Lamia, and the vengeful Furies. In the medieval and early modern periods, she is an oversexed, baby-slaying, spellcasting witch; in the Romantic and Victorian eras, a vampiress; and in the modern age of psychoanalysis, a mental patient. After this longue duree history, Johnson shows how monstrous bitchery has been challenged and reinterpreted in contemporary cinematic popular culture, becoming an expression of heroism and resistance in films like Ginger Snaps, Jennifer's Body, and The Witch. She demonstrates how deeply embedded the roots of misogyny have become, and why it is more critical today than ever that we expose and address them.
An irreverent look at a pervasive trope that runs through four thousand years of Western culture, Monstrous Bitch reveals that while representations of the powerful woman have evolved over time, the fear and demonization of her remains the same.

Unmasks the long-forgotten story of how a flying, superhuman vigilante played a pivotal role in the founding of the American labor movement.
On July 5, 1828, more than a century before Superman arrived on Earth, a superhero took flight in Philadelphia's night sky. Buried on page three of a small local newspaper, the announcement of his arrival appeared under the title "The Night-Hawk, No. 1" with a cryptic epigraph from Romeo and Juliet: "I'll be a candleholder and look on." Who and what was the Night Hawk? As Matthew Warner Osborn reveals, this was the sobriquet of a mysterious columnist for the weekly Mechanics' Free Press, the first radical socialist newspaper in America. Dressed in a mysterious cloak, the Night Hawk soared over Philadelphia, revealing the evil crimes of prominent gentlemen, fighting murderous criminals, and calling out fraudulent moral authorities.
The Night Hawk was the ingenious invention of an impoverished actor, Cornelius A. Logan, who created the character as a public champion of Philadelphia's Working Men's movement, the first successful American labor party. The Night Hawk's nocturnal adventures transformed their socialist ideology into an entertaining fantasy that dramatized the struggle against industrial exploitation and the degradation of working people. The success of the character made Logan into a celebrity, and he went on to become a popular and innovative comedian on the antebellum stage.
A harbinger of the superheroes we know today, the Night Hawk promises to illuminate dark secrets from the past, but he can also shed light on our present. He ignites our need to see corrupt elites unmasked and held accountable for their actions, all while protecting the innocent and oppressed. Americans have always loved to fantasize about powerful superheroes who hide behind masks while chasing bad guys, and Osborn shows in this entertaining history how the Night Hawk was perhaps the first standard bearer for that enduring mystique.

The book argues that, in line with the latest research results and the author's educational experience, the existing, positive image of a second and foreign language (L2) teacher seems to be no longer valid. There is a strong need to dispel some of the commonly existing beliefs concerning the teaching profession by providing a thorough and multi-faceted account of issues connected with this field. This is in line with the assumption that shedding more light onto L2 educators' actual status is a great significance for creating a more realistic image of these educators who have to constantly cope with new and old challenges. Modern education systems in many countries are constantly evolving in the face of growing teacher shortages and low attractiveness of the profession. Therefore, there seems to be an urgent need to develop a better understanding of the well-being of teachers and its implications for L2 teaching and learning. This book presents a comprehensive conceptual framework to analyze teachers' well-being and its influence on the quality of their professional performance. The book is of significance and relevance not only to L2 educators and L2 teacher trainers, but also to students and university graduates who are considering becoming teachers in the future. The content of the book is a valuable asset for policy makers who are interested in creating meaningful and efficient working conditions for those who are teachers and those who plan to become satisfied and motivated educators in the future.

Experience a year in Los Angeles County, in all its glitter and grit, through a unique anthology that pairs essays by acclaimed writers and historians with custom maps.
When many of us picture Los Angeles, we're actually thinking of LA County. Home to roughly ten million people, the county alone is more populous than forty-two US states. Its eighty-eight cities include places made famous by Hollywood glamor and California dreaming-Beverly Hills, Malibu, and Santa Monica-but also working-class municipalities and the self-explanatory City of Industry. With a territory that includes the Pacific coastline, mountain ranges, and the high Mojave Desert, the county's landscapes have been touched by earthquakes, droughts, and, of course, devastating fires. LA County is a place of extremes: progress and injustice, innovation and stagnation.
Visions of the Southland collects essays by writers, journalists, and historians to create a nuanced portrait of LA that's grounded in the county itself-its sites, structures, and stories. Contributors-including Gustavo Arellano, Keri Blakinger, Lynell George, Christopher Hawthorne, Michael Hiltzik, Greg Hise, Carolina Miranda, Becky Nicolaides, Susan Straight, and David L. Ulin-delve into LA's infamous air pollution, movie ranches, prisons, aqueducts, urban forests, SoCal Bohemianism, and more. A custom map by Ezra Rawitsch enriches each piece and grounds the reader in specific locations throughout the county. Unfolding over the course of a year, the book traces the rhythms of politics, sports, weather, and wildlife across this sprawling and enigmatic place.
Sweeping in its scope and gorgeous in its design, Visions of the Southland will delight Angelenos, history buffs, urbanists, and map enthusiasts alike.

Educator Support and Sustainability brings together groundbreaking research on one of the most pressing challenges in contemporary education: how an increasingly diverse P-20 educator workforce experiences, navigates, and survives stress. As schools and universities evolve demographically, politically, and structurally, the emotional and psychological demands placed on educators-especially those from racially and culturally minoritized backgrounds-have never been more complex.
This book illuminates the lived realities of teachers, leaders, psychologists, and faculty whose identities shape both their professional burdens and their coping strategies.
Together, these chapters offer an unflinching look at the systemic forces shaping educator well-being-and the innovative, culturally grounded strategies educators use to persist. Educator Support and Sustainability is an essential resource for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners committed to building educational environments where all educators can thrive, not merely endure.

Democratizing Participation presents a critical examination of voter participation in the Citywide and Community Education Council (CCEC) elections of New York City, revealing deep disparities and systemic shortcomings in democratic engagement. Despite the 2021 expansion of voting rights to all public-school parents, all three elections held since then were marked by alarmingly low turnout. The parents of only three percent of the students voted, with Black, Hispanic, Native American, and economically disadvantaged communities significantly underrepresented.
Drawing on interviews with a wide range of stakeholders, the study identifies key barriers to participation, such as awareness, access, relevance, affordability, and trust, and presents a comprehensive set of reform options. These range from administrative improvements to legislative changes, including bold considerations such as Board vs Mayoral control, participation grants, and sortition.
By connecting the findings from New York to broader questions of democratic resilience, Democratizing Participation underscores the urgent need for institutional reform and inclusive governance. It is a compelling call to action for anyone invested in strengthening democracy through equitable participation.

This book examines dominant discourses of globalisation and history education in schools and their impact on democracy, equality, social justice, and human rights. It explores how historical narratives shape societies' political and cultural evolution over time and how critical understanding of these narratives reinforces cultural identity. Drawing on Bruner's meaning-making process and constructivist approaches, the book argues that history pedagogies grounded in transformational paradigms can create meaningful learning experiences that define identity and belonging.
The book calls for building critical literacy in students, enabling them to critically examine different historical accounts and distinguish history class learning from representations in films, various historical texts and artifacts. It encourages critical appraisal of diverse worldviews and offers different ways to reconstruct and re-imagine history education pedagogy and its connection to social justice, democracy, and equality.

This book explores the impact of digital algorithms on visual culture, examining how these technologies influence the creation, circulation, interpretation, and archiving of images. It presents a focused analysis of how algorithms reshape key sociological themes such as power, social relations, labour, racialisation, gender, and representation. Through a combination of case studies and theoretical essays, the book highlights the algorithmic shift within visual sociology, addressing crucial questions: Can algorithms interpret images like humans? How do they affect our understanding of subjectivity, agency, truth, and creativity? With perspectives from multiple geographies and cultural contexts and the analysis of visual phenomena across various digital platforms, this volume is essential for students and scholars in visual sociology, digital sociology, and visual studies. It serves as an accessible, thought-provoking resource for understanding the rapidly evolving relationship between visual culture and technological intervention.

This open access book takes readers inside the minds and hearts of twenty urban visionaries transforming urban and rural environments across six continents. Rather than focusing on technical solutions or policy frameworks, Cathy Oke and Jorn Verbeeck reveal the deeply personal journeys of former mayors, Indigenous leaders, CEOs, entrepreneurs, activists and academics who have used cities and towns as living laboratories for humanity's future. From Durban to Paris, Melbourne to Bangalore, these boundary spanners share intimate stories of what drives their work: childhood memories of fishing with grandparents, moments of recognition on Arctic mountains, encounters with traditional knowledge systems that challenge Western assumptions about development. Rather than celebrating lone heroes, the book reveals cities and their communities as "kaleidoscopes of possibility" requiring ensemble casts who translate between disciplines, sectors, and communities.
Each story weaves personal odyssey with professional transformation, capturing how individual experiences of displacement, discovery, and belonging shape approaches to collective challenges like climate change, inequality, and urban resilience. This is a syllabus for sustainable city leadership: accumulated wisdom that integrates multiple knowledge systems, honours ancient wisdom alongside contemporary innovation, and fosters collaborative intelligence through the stories we share. Essential reading for anyone navigating the messy, vital work of making cities thrive.

Remember the Tuscania plunges readers into the night of February 5, 1918, when a German U-boat's torpedo found a crowded US troopship in the North Atlantic-and into the century of argument, propaganda, and remembrance that followed. At its heart are the Baraboo Twenty-One, citizen-soldiers from a Wisconsin town who survived the sinking that became the deadliest U-boat attack on Americans in the First World War and the nation's first mass-casualty event of the conflict.
Steven Trout braids military history and cultural history with a dramatic pulse. He reconstructs the voyage and catastrophe in detail. Then he follows the aftershocks across newspapers, posters, cartoons, poems, and sheet music as the home front seizes on a new rallying cry - "Remember the Tuscania!" - and turns the dead into usable symbols. Trout also exposes a War Department fiasco over casualty lists that helped force reforms to identification practices (serial numbers on dog tags; rosters kept at hand aboard transports).
Remember the Tuscania draws attention to how people memorialize dramatic wartime events: the isle of Islay's windswept "American Monument," improvised funerals beneath a hastily sewn Stars and Stripes, the formation of the National Tuscania Survivors Association, and a twenty-first-century resurrection of the story back in Baraboo. Trout shows how myth overtook messy reality and how private grief often resisted public pageantry.
Trout's narrative is a riveting, deeply researched investigation that showcases the meaning for Americans of a nearly forgotten disaster and the unbreakable ties of transatlantic remembrance that it left behind.
