As a global conversation around political transformation and environmental struggles continues, Southern Visions of Nature examines how Chilean environmental organisations use visual digital media to shape public discourse, build collective identity, and collaborate during political upheaval, revealing the unique intersections of environment, politics, and communication in a Global South context.

Through a rich methodological combination, Aravena-Ortiz explores how environmental organisations in Chile use visual media in digital spaces to advocate, mobilise, and construct collective identities during politically charged moments. Providing a compelling case study of a country with deep environmental challenges, ranging from water scarcity to extractive economies, and a society marked by growing ecological awareness and civic mobilisation, the chapters unpack how environmental discourse became a prominent theme in public debate and visual media emerged as key tools in how EOs communicated their concerns and visions for the future. The author reveals how these communication strategies were used to shape public discourse, are shaped themselves by internal logics, and how they interact with formal and informal partnerships. Centring the voices, practices, and visual languages of Chilean organisations, chapters challenges the often Global North-centric narratives that dominate discussions of digital activism.

Providing a cohesive portrait of contemporary environmental communication in Chile, Southern Visions of Nature contributes to multiple academic fields, including environmental communication, media and visual culture studies, political communication, and Latin American studies. It is both a timely scholarly intervention and a testament to the creative resilience of environmental activism in an age of interconnected crises and within the struggle to imagine and communicate a new future from the Global South.

Given the increasing number of international older migrants in Europe and the UK, Ageing Migrants' Sense of Home addresses a critical gap in understanding the conditions that facilitate or impede positive ageing in the context of migration, enhancing scholarly knowledge on how processes of identification and sense of belonging to places are experienced by people ageing away from their home countries.

Grounded in long-term ethnographic fieldwork with a community of older Italians in Northeast England, Palladino explores experiences of ageing across borders, feelings of embeddedness in local communities, negotiation of belonging and perceived vulnerability. Highlighting how participants experience private and public spaces, their transnational lifestyles, and relationships with objects of affection, memory, and identity, chapters underscore the importance of affective bonds with places. Place attachment and identity impact health and well-being in later life, and insights into older migrants' subjectivities and life stories stress the social aspects of the environment and the importance of having places to call 'home' in the context of migration.

Drawing critical attention to the diversity of ageing experiences among older migrants and the need for research, practice and policy to respond to their needs both locally and internationally, this is a significant resource for researchers in social sciences, social gerontology, and human geography.

During Imperial Japan's rule over Korea (1910-1945), modern biomedicine and its interpretations of women's illnesses began to define a vision of womanhood that differed significantly from anything imagined in the Choson era (1392-1910). In the context of Korea's colonization by Japan-where, in contrast to Western colonies, ruler and ruled were not separated by perceived racial difference-the diagnosis of illnesses served to distinguish Korean from Japanese bodies and was used as proof of Korean racial inferiority. Physicians initiated invasive examinations of women's bodies under the guise of civilizing and modernizing the race, and of promoting the health and well-being of a primitive, subject population. Centering the female body within the context of colonialism and nationalism, Jin-kyung Park investigates what she calls "corporeal colonialism," or the relationship between colonial power and women's bodies. This relationship was chiefly characterized by the shifting meanings given to women's maladies, arbitrarily categorized by the colonial biomedical establishment as puinbyong (women's diseases), a constellation of conditions that ranged from irregular menstruation, frigidity, and infertility to syphilis, hysteria, and homicide. Park argues that the aim was to cultivate a new "biological womanhood" for Koreans, grounded in Western medical science, that would bring Korean women into modernity. Bodies for Empire also reveals how this effort was undertaken, not only by Japanese physicians but by native Korean physicians as well, with surprisingly varied motives for participation.

Politics, Grievances, and Protest draws on one hundred interviews and forty years of media coverage to provide a cross-national analysis of student mobilization in Latin America's Southern Cone. The book explains why student protests increased in Chile starting in the 2000s, while decreasing in neighboring Argentina and Uruguay. Its findings show that when democracies persistently ignore social demands, they may indirectly foster protest growth. In such contexts, the absence of meaningful change fuels anti-establishment grievances, encourages social movement innovation, and facilitates processes of radicalization that can spread widely. In contrast, state responsiveness often produces the opposite effect. These findings challenge long-standing theories that link relatively closed political systems and movement radicalization to decreased mobilization and suggest that grievances play a central role in shaping variation in protest activity. This is a Flip it Open title and may be available open access on Cambridge Core.

Today, Brazil is home to both some of the strongest trans rights protections and the highest rates of transphobic murders in Latin America. To explain this contradiction, Trans Brazil chronicles 150 years of Brazilian history through the everyday stories of trans people. Jose Amador reveals how anxieties about gender boundaries overlapped with fears of other "problem bodies," including people of African descent, prostitutes, homosexuals, "women-men," and suffragists. As global discourses of transness reached Brazil, trans people, doctors, and the media debated what sex, gender, and sexuality meant. Amid new and evolving definitions of embodied identities, homosexuals, travestis, transsexuals, and trans men sometimes shared spaces marked by homophobia and transphobia and at other times occupied distinct spaces in their struggles for recognition and rights.

Bringing this inclusive trans history into the early twenty-first century, Jose Amador illuminates how medicine, trans activism, and the state eventually established access to gender affirming care as a right, albeit one often denied. Tracing these social, political, and medical transformations and redefining historical assumptions about Brazil, Amador shows how policing those who challenged binary gender has been integral to state formation, and how gender-diverse and trans people were crucial to the making of modern Brazil.

A Nobel Prize-winning physicist illuminates how physicists think about and do physics

What principles guide physicists' ways of thinking and the practice and culture of the discipline? In The Physicist's Way, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist P.J.E. Peebles argues that definite assumptions underpin the working physicist's approach, the elements of which are learned organically by incoming generations of students and shared across the field. Peebles outlines these basic principles, elucidating how physicists apply their approach to a broad range of topics, from quantum physics to the physics of the expanding universe.

After discussing physicists' demanding tests of the fundamental theories of quantum physics and relativistic cosmology and how physicists think about the puzzling lack of consistency between the two, Peebles considers the sociology of the field and where physics might be headed. Engaging throughout with ideas developed by scientists, philosophers, and historians, he elucidates the unique place physics holds in the natural sciences for the ability to discover theories that make definite predictions that agree with what can be observed.

The Physicist's Way offers an enlightening perspective on how physicists think about and approach the practice of physics.

Cuba in the 1970s was a beacon of Third World liberation-and a sanctuary for US radicals on the run. Fugitive States is the true story of Charlie Hill, an American exile who has lived in Havana for 55 years. An Illinois native and war veteran who was expelled from the US Army for refusing to fight against the Vietnamese national liberation forces, Hill later joined the Republic of New Afrika, a dynamic Black nationalist movement that called for reparations for slavery and the creation of a sovereign nation-state for Black people in the American South.

Accused of killing a New Mexico state trooper in 1971, Hill hijacked an airplane from Albuquerque to Havana, where the Cuban government granted him asylum. In Havana, Hill hoped to connect with African revolutionaries and to join the armed struggle against colonialism in Angola or Guinea-Bissau; instead, he became the longest-remaining US political exile in Cuba and a witness to five decades of socialism and revolution. Drawing on archival sources and extensive interviews, historian Teishan A. Latner uses Hill's surprising story to illuminate a broader set of encounters between foreign expatriates and the Cuban Revolution during a turbulent era of global radicalism.

A new history of the Age of Revolutions, from a Caribbean perspective.

The Other French Revolution uncovers the Caribbean uprising that shocked the world before vanishing from memory. This revolution initially drew the attention of every major imperial power. Then, for centuries, only fragmented accounts of events in Grenada, Saint Vincent, Guadeloupe, and Saint Lucia persisted, while the full story of regionwide revolution was lost to time. Paul Friedland restores the larger whole, detailing how the radically new vision of a world without tyranny and slavery swept through the Windward Islands between 1794 and 1796.

At the heart of The Other French Revolution is a vivid narrative of political imagination and collective struggle. African, European, and Indigenous participants, both free and enslaved, mobilized around the ideal of universal republicanism. Their hopes, shaped by local realities and emerging from dialogue with revolutionaries in France, were then crushed by a ruthless British campaign, abetted by French counter-revolutionaries. Determined not only to restore colonial rule but also to bury all memory of the uprising, the military response was merciless, marked by re-enslavement, exile, imprisonment, and execution. As many as a hundred thousand people may have died between the revolution's beginnings and its bloody end.

The very intensity of the repression underscores the scale and significance of the movement the colonizers sought to erase. Bringing light to a forgotten story of people who crossed the deepest divides to pursue a vision of humanity and liberty far ahead of its time, Friedland offers a fresh and compelling account of the Age of Revolutions.

Good governance has become increasingly central to discussions of economic growth, development, and environmental management. As the world grapples with increasing inequality and environmental degradation, the role of governance in shaping sustainable outcomes has gained critical importance.

Growth, Development and Environmental Implications of Good Governance by Ramesh Chandra Das delves into the complex relationship between governance, economic progress, and environmental management. His work tackles four key questions: how governance indicators are interconnected, whether good governance is a prerequisite for growth and development or the result of it, and its role in environmental management. Drawing on case studies from around the world, Das provides a comprehensive analysis of how governance influences diverse economies. The work's unique contribution lies in its global approach, comparing governance models across different regions and offering timely insights into how governance failures and successes shape both economic and environmental stability. At a time when global governance faces significant crises, this analysis offers crucial guidance for navigating complex economic and environmental challenges.

Designed for scholars in Economics, Political Economics and Development Economics, etc. policymakers, and practitioners, this study offers valuable insights into how good governance can drive sustainable growth and development across the globe.

This book examines why Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) young people continue to face homelessness and intersectional disadvantages, even as legal and social attitudes appear to improve. Drawing on seventeen years of ethnographic research and frontline work in England, it offers an intimate and rigorous account of how young people navigate housing precarity, family rejection and uneven access to state support. It shows how sexuality, gender, race, class, disability and religion shape encounters with welfare systems, revealing how well-intentioned policies can reproduce harm and how celebrated progress in LGBTQ+ rights can obscure the structural conditions that leave many behind. Tunaker argues for a deeper understanding of the "paradox of progress" and its consequences for those at the sharpest edges of marginalisation. The book speaks to scholars and practitioners in socio-legal studies, legal anthropology, gender and sexuality studies, homelessness and housing research, and anyone concerned with state power and meaningful social change.

An ecologist reveals why the solution to the climate crisis lies in Earth's oldest inhabitants: microbes.

Our planet is in crisis. Scorching temperatures, deadly fires and flooding, and food shortages-the signs are everywhere. Experts warn that the planet is careening toward a point of no return. Yet their solution-eliminating fossil fuels-may not stem the damage soon enough.

In The Age of Microbes Steven Allison argues there's another way forward: microbes. These ubiquitous denizens of our biosphere are resilient to climate change and crucial to all life on Earth, making them ideal partners in the quest to repair the planet. From improved crop yields to sustainable jet fuel and healthier cities, Allison reveals how we can expand upon microbes' natural ability to remove carbon from the atmosphere, clean up pollution, and restore ecosystems.

Weaving together lessons from Indigenous cultures and farmers, scientists and land stewards, The Age of Microbes is not just a blueprint for rescuing a planet in distress. It's also a hopeful message that there's still time to reverse course. But we mustn't wait.

Captive Ecologies makes a case for the ecological significance of slavery's afterlife, tracing the complex entanglements between racial capitalism and Black ecological freedom. Attending to the ways that racial capitalism implicates both captive bodies and captive land, Jennifer C. James brings into relief the harm that racial capitalism does to Black people as well as the human and non-human worlds they inhabit. James looks to a range of case studies and media from the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries, including Black music, ecopoetics, literature, social history, biography, and Black feminist and queer art, tracing the various ways that the environmental stakes of racial capitalism have shaped the Black ecological imagination. In these works, the concept of captivity signals not only slavery but Black life in the "wake": carceral spaces and enclosures, exploitative economic systems, sacrifice zones, and more. James offers novel concepts and frameworks to affect new modes of ecocriticism that are equipped to grapple with the unique demands and stakes of captive ecologies.

The global climate system in seven easy lessons-an essential primer on the science that shapes our world

Earth's changing climate is the defining issue of our time. Climate science should be accessible to everyone, but for too long it has remained impenetrable to nonexperts. Paul Palmer throws open the doors to this vital area of research, inviting readers to discover for themselves how scientists take the measure of a warming planet, how the Sun's rays help to balance Earth's energies, how the planet's rotation affects large-scale atmospheric patterns, how the Anthropocene is fundamentally altering the climate, and much more.

Each chapter of this lively and informative book covers one of the seven key ideas that are central to understanding how our climate works-temperature, energy, air, water, cycles, time, and uncertainty-providing a user-friendly guide to the whole system. Palmer distills complex scientific concepts into plain language, making crucial facts about the climate available to all, regardless of their background. He explores the critical role of molecules and microbes, showing how the smallest elements profoundly influence our planetary destiny, and frames climate science not just in terms of crisis but as an elegant and fascinating area of inquiry, discovery, and shared purpose.

Bridging the gap between science and public perception, How Our Climate Works goes beyond politics and alarmism, empowering readers with the knowledge they need to truly appreciate the profound beauty and fragility of the planet we call home.

California Futures is a critical study of California as a site of liberatory dreaming, one that takes up the history, politics, and afterlives of the region's colonial imaginings as well as archives of resistance and world-making which strive toward Indigenous, decolonial, Black, queer, feminist, and anti-white supremacist futures. Attending carefully to the colonial, commercial, and environmental entanglements of the region, Daniel Lanza Rivers offers an account of the processes of speculation that worlded California into being. Rivers examines case studies such as the colonial cultures of Grizzly bear eradication and reintroduction; the entanglements of drought, industrial agriculture, and environmental toxicity in California's Central Valley; utopianism in the Klamath Mountains, from the Black Bear Ranch commune to Octavia Butler's Parables series; dam removal and Native climate adaptation on the Klamath watershed; and the policing of unhoused people around Oakland's Lake Merritt. Through these case studies, Rivers interrogates the long histories of settler conquest, extractive and racial capitalism, and heteropatriarchy that have shaped California. They chart strategies for thinking beyond the colonial Anthropocene and toward the post-extractive and liberatory futures that emerge from and with decolonial land relations.

How British intellectuals of the twentieth century reckoned with the emergence of an Asian power

Most historians of nineteenth and twentieth century Europe point to the persistence of racialised and hierarchical views of non-Europeans as "uncivilised." Yet these accounts overlook the profound intellectual impact of what contemporaries called the "awakening of Asia." In Rival Civilisations, Chika Tonooka shows how the rise of Japan after 1905 compelled British intellectuals to rethink fundamental questions about world order and human difference. Juxtaposing Japanese and British sources, Tonooka offers an innovative history of British Eurocentrism-its ebbs and flows and emergent pluralist alternatives-through the lens of British debates on Japan.

Tonooka describes how British intellectuals and commentators grappled with such issues as whether civilisation was singular or plural; whether the civilising mission in Asia might be more successfully undertaken as the "yellow man's burden"; whether non-Christians could be moral; and whether a world converging along Western lines was likely and even desirable. Even at the Empire's peak, British thinkers began to grasp that Britain could no longer take its civilisational preeminence for granted. But Tonooka also considers what these debates on Japan missed, arguing that British civilisational discourse consistently overlooked what she demonstrates to be the paradoxical nature of global modernity. As a result, these British blind spots repeatedly foreclosed anticipations of critical world political challenges that lay ahead. Her original and rigorous analysis will enable readers to identify analogous blind spots over the rise of China and its consequences for the global order.

This book examines the factors that lay behind the emergence of the principle of conservation of energy and of a new fundamental concept, energy, from a science marked by rough notions concerning the various forces and powers of nature. These conjoined developments constituted arguably the most important innovation in physics during the nineteenth century: they unified and defined the field as never before while for the first time bringing mechanics-previously belonging to mathematics-within the purview of physics. As shown in abundant detail, no one but Friedrich Mohr and Robert Mayer - both marginal figures in the science of the day - exemplified both aspects of this development, i.e. the concept of energy and the principle of its conservation. What it shows, likewise in abundant detail, is how those concepts achieved clarification through the exchanges and interactions of scientists-from Britain, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Denmark-who addressed cognate issues. Any notion of "discovery" as an essentially individualistic aspect of science is thus rendered moot. Based on an in-depth study of the work of twenty scientists, this book is of great interest primarily to professional historians of science and graduate students.

This book explores the managerial, marketing, economic, operational, and financial strategies that have enabled trade publishing to confront many macroeconomic and technological changes so far in the 21st century in a far more efficient way than many other creative industries, such as the newspaper industry.

Despite these unsettling changes and business threats, the book industry maintained a sense of "continuity." No major trade book publishing house has gone bankrupt, due in some measure to a wave of mergers and acquisitions. Publishers have also succeeded by discovering and publishing new authors, many in demographic groups that have long been marginalized, such as women, African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Asian-Americans.

This work discusses the complex disruptive challenges trade book publishing confronted after 2000, especially after the wide acceptance of the internet and the launch of Amazon.com. It will provide a series of managerial, marketing, financial, copyright, information technology suggestions the industry should consider as it continues to face a myriad of challenges and opportunities. It will appeal to researchers interested in understanding the business aspects of an industry that has been forced to evolve in order to survive, and in some cases, thrive.

An urban and environmental history of the New Jersey Meadowlands, where marsh meets megamall.

The New Jersey Meadowlands, the vast marshes across the Hudson River from New York City, are a mysterious and complex wetland. Both strange and well-known to the millions of people who traverse the northeast corridor every year, this landscape is not well understood despite its familiarity. Seemingly natural and unnatural, human and nonhuman, the Meadowlands has long been shaped by urban development, industry, infrastructure, and countless dreams.

In Neither Land nor Water, Sevin Yildiz offers a close look at the planners, scientists, developers, politicians, industrialists, and others who have engaged with, dreamed about, or damaged this transitional ecology in different ways over the decades. She traces key periods in the area's rich histories of urban planning and ecological thought, from the dispossession of the Lenape natives, through the dawn of ecological science, and onto both intensive industrial developments and environmental resistance to them. She examines as well how the Meadowlands exposes the inadequacies of today's approaches to planning in the face of climate change and how they perhaps offer clues to a better future.

A sobering assessment of the systematic failures of mental health work.

The United States is in the midst of a mental health crisis that cannot be ignored. Its effects are visible in overcrowded emergency rooms, homeless encampments, and frequent police encounters responding to people with serious mental illness. And yet, the many ways we attempt to support people with mental illness-from medical care to housing support to basic hygiene-seem to never take meaningful hold. All this despite the tireless work of professionals who attempt to help people bring together the pieces of a life. The problem is not in any individual effort to ameliorate the problem; it's the many ways these programs fail to work together. For those with serious mental illness, and those who work to ameliorate it, there is no system. There is only mess.

In A Mad Mess, sociologist Owen Whooley uncovers the exasperating barriers, bureaucratic mismatches, and threadbare resources that have made a mess of what should be a supportive system. Set in Albuquerque, New Mexico-a city whose struggles echo communities nationwide- the book reveals the challenges mental health workers face daily, from tedious paperwork to occasional violence. Whooley interviewed mental health workers at two local mental health services organizations, the specialized behavioral health division of the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), and a psychiatric emergency department at the University of New Mexico Hospital. Despite mostly good intentions and sometimes heroic efforts, he shows why this important work so often ends in failure.

Written with deep sympathy and unflinching honesty, A Mad Mess reveals how the lack of a cohesive mental health system obstructs critical care and places roadblocks before front-line mental health workers at every turn. Most critically, for those who suffer from severe mental illness, these setbacks are a constant reminder that the institutions charged with helping them have left them on their own.

Forms of Suffering demonstrates how Geoffrey Chaucer transformed pity into a central ethical and aesthetic concern in English literature by tracing his reformulations of trans-European pity discourses for an English audience. In these reformulations, Chaucer brought to the fore the modes and effects of pity's work in challenging, even overturning, traditional power structures such as social status, gender, and race. Critically, his consideration of pity also explores its precarity: the ways that pity could easily slide from transformative justice into a weapon of unjust oppression.

Jessica Hines describes how Chaucer's writing was formative in shaping an English pity discourse increasingly critical of the sociopolitical capacity of pity to act as a tool for challenging injustice and reforming oppressive social structures. Forms of Suffering makes clear the profound appeal of pity's ability to challenge structures of power in Chaucer's writing, as well as the ways that pity itself could be - and was being - manipulated by the powerful for their own ends.
