This book explores the social context of healthcare innovation and highlights the emergent and contingent nature of implementing change. Drawing on empirical evidence, it examines the ways in which people and organisations engage in collective sensemaking processes to create meanings that enable innovation to become integrated into health care practice. With contributions from a range of cross-disciplinary authors and perspectives, the book ultimately advocates for a more open and interpretive approach to implementation, drawing together lessons learnt across the cases presented. It is an attempt to understand and explain the motives behind the close alliance between China and Albania and the role this alliance played in their domestic relations and foreign policy. Since both countries viewed the USSR as their political, ideological and military opponent during the Cold War, they moved closer together to withstand Soviet pressure. The book analyzes the personality cults surrounding Enver Hoxha and Mao Zedong, their ideological concepts, absolutist logic, and their harshness against their opponents. It examines the breakdown of Albania-China relations in the final phase of the Cold War and the gradual normalization of diplomatic relations in the post-Cold War period. The analysis covers various aspects of Albania's relations with China, from the establishment of diplomatic relations to the present day. The book focuses on topics such as ideology, nationalism, interstate relations, economic and trade relations, and military affairs.

This book examines assassinations in Lebanon from 1951 through 2005, addressing the impunity with which these killings have occurred and the impact of these assassinations on the political environment within the country. One core component of the book is the discussion of accountability and investigations of assassinations in Lebanon, with one full chapter devoted to a broad discussion of accountability and the impact of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. How Walt Whitman's philosophy of death prepares the soul for freedom and equality

Humans fantasize about immortality. Billionaires dabble in cryonics, politicians build monuments to themselves, and writers donate their papers to libraries. In Die Your Own Death, Jack Turner argues that the quest for immortality-literal or symbolic-is politically destructive. He does so through a meditation on the work of Walt Whitman. Whitman held that democracy prepares individuals to "die their own deaths"-free of fear, resentment, and illusion. In Whitman's "existential democracy," accepting death strengthens freedom and equality. And yet, Turner finds, Whitman only half succeeded in forging a democratic philosophy of death. As Whitman's thought evolved in response to changing ideas about nation, race, and empire, he encouraged citizens to seek immortality through racial imperialism-the expansion of white empire from North America to the Pacific Islands-as a monument to American greatness.

Turner explores the poetics of death in Leaves of Grass and its relationship to Whitman's democratic theory ("I exist as I am, that is enough"). Through a close analysis of Drum-Taps and Memoranda During the War, Turner shows that Whitman sought to redeem the mass slaughter of the Civil War by cloaking it in poetic and national glory. And in Whitman's greatest prose work, Democratic Vistas, Turner argues, Whitman envisioned an antidemocratic national immortalism that ignored Native sovereignty and Black equality. Turner exposes the dark side of Whitman's philosophy of death, but he also reveals how that philosophy can still be a resource in the ongoing struggle for freedom and equality.

Reveals the intertwined nature of imperial mapping and map history through the making of the colony of French Soudan in nineteenth-century West Africa.

Thomas J. Bassett's Writing the Land argues that mapping played a key role in France's territorial conquest of Africa, and that the process of imperial expansion and colonization shaped map history by influencing how maps were constructed, circulated, and used. Analyzing military and surveying campaigns over half a century in an area that became the colony of French Soudan, Bassett focuses on the social and spatial problems that surveyors and mapmakers tried to solve in the process of territorial conquest, as well as the conflicts that arose as they pursued their goals.

In their efforts to obtain this territory, French military leaders, cartographers, and expedition members came into continual contact with local Africans, with whom they negotiated and clashed. Often, imperial officers relied on intermediaries to navigate West African geography, drawing on the knowledge of political authorities, interpreters, guides, and long-distance traders; the maps they produced are inextricable from these interactions. Ultimately, Bassett claims, examining the processes of mapping in the context of these encounters leads us to understand these maps anew as Euro-African constructions, ones that emerge from a complex process of exchange and domination.

Concrete Futures is a history of concrete that complicates our view of the building material, revealing it as a site of contestation over resources and authority in twentieth-century Morocco. Beginning with the French protectorate period between 1912 and 1956 and continuing into the post-independence era, Daniel Williford uses debates surrounding concrete building technologies as a conduit through which to explore struggles over colonization, modernization, and decolonization. The half-finished cinder block buildings found in cities all over Morocco, he shows, are a product of the system that colonial engineers and officials developed to deal with labor disputes, contests over knowledge, and anticolonial unrest.

By exploring concrete and its uses, Williford discloses how conflicts between experts, workers, and residents over construction and urban renewal-from the introduction of reinforced concrete to strategies of slum clearance-shaped the meaning and the trajectory of decolonization in Morocco.
