A panoramic historical account of India's ascent in the global fossil economy
India is today one of the world's largest producers and consumers of fossil fuels, driving new investments in the global fossil economy and achieving record-breaking levels of coal extraction at home. As the planet burns from climate change, this entrenchment of fossil fuel dependence has left many searching for how we arrived at this point. Until the Last Ton provides a sweeping new appraisal of this planetary dilemma, uncovering how India became part of an emerging fossil capitalism that continues to shape the present.
Matthew Shutzer recasts the origins of the fossil economy by showing how European industrialization unleashed a global search for fossil energy in the colonial world. Placing India at the center of this history, Shutzer traces how the highland forests of eastern India became early frontiers for global coal investment, transforming this landscape into the largest site of imperial overseas coal production across a century of colonial rule. At the heart of these shifts was a legal framework of subterranean property, which redefined local relations of land ownership and social power, while tying the growth of India's fossil economy to the progressive ecological destruction of the forest frontier.
Following these dynamics into the postcolonial period, Until the Last Ton reveals the enduring impacts of colonial property on independent India's energy history, shedding new light on postwar struggles for energy development and resource sovereignty, as well as the violent conflicts over mining dispossession that have haunted India's economic ascent in an age of climate crisis.

This book deepens and provides specificity to conversations about what multispecies climate justice might look like, both conceptually and empirically. Bringing together a range of humanities, social sciences, and critical physical sciences scholars who draw on case studies in a variety of geographical settings, each chapter is animated by the politico-ethical impulse to dismantle anthropocentric and liberal ideas of justice and build practices and modes of interspecies solidarity in their place. The book draws substantially on the scholarship in environmental justice and political ecology, alongside materialist, post humanist, Indigenous, and feminist geographies, to assert an understanding of climate change as a multispecies problem, the solutions for which can only be found in decolonial, intersectional, and abolitionist praxis. It is anchored in transdisciplinary approaches to multispecies climate justice to explore what interspecies climate solidarities are - and could be. In doing so, the book offers a diagnosis of the complicated injustices embedded in climate change, encourage and prefigure more just and inclusive scalar imaginaries anchored in multispecies recognition and transformative climate just futures.

A fresh reading of the relationship between moral and political philosophy in Aristotle's thought.
Our democracies promise the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness-at least, within the confines of the law. Yet the law is an ineffective guide to the good life; laws can be arbitrary, even immoral. What other limit, then, should direct us as we pursue our own fulfillment?
In Law and the Good Life, philosopher Robert C. Bartlett examines Aristotle's consideration of this question. Rather than defer to authority, Aristotle invites us to ground ourselves in moral virtue and intellectual fulfillment, an argument he develops in both Politics and Nicomachean Ethics. As political creatures, Aristotle tells us, we are capable of moral action and therefore must embrace that capacity; at the same time, as rational creatures, we must understand what is true, even without regard to action. In taking these insights together, Bartlett offers a new reading of Aristotle's political philosophy, one he hopes might serve as a prudent lodestar in our own turbulent times.

This book is the first to explore Argentine tango as both a philosophical practice and a metaphor for human existence. Written by an Argentine professional dancer and academic philosopher, it bridges embodied experience and intellectual inquiry to propose a transformative "philo-tango" approach. Drawing on classical philosophy, existentialism, and contemporary therapeutic movements, the book argues that tango's five loves-of music, self, partner, floor, and community-offer a kinesthetic path to virtue ethics and personal growth. Through lyrical analysis, case studies, and philosophical reflection, Carone shows how tango can heal, connect, and inspire, making it not just a dance but a way of life. This groundbreaking work will appeal to scholars in philosophy, dance studies, and ethics, as well as practitioners of tango and philosophical counseling.
When reading this book, there are moments I literally leap for joy. Tango as a Metaphor for Life will make an important contribution to the fields of dance studies and philosophy. It is original; it breaks new ground in both philosophy and dance studies; it is filled with illuminating anecdotes, observations, and analyses of both dances and texts; and it is grounded in the author's extensive knowledge and personal expertise in both dance and philosophy. Carone's overarching claim that the practice of Tango, when integrated with philosophical dialogue, functions not only to represent life but transform it, will resonate across disciplines. Her Philo-Tango approach has enormous, proven potential for breaking open conversation and catalyzing healing in a number of venues, from academic to therapeutic settings. The range and depth of the author's scholarship are consistently impressive. Brava!
Kimerer L. LaMothe, Ph.D., Harvard University, USA
"Gabriela Carone brings together her expertise in academic philosophy and tango to reveal how tango dance and culture can give substance to the Socratic quest to live an examined life, and how, in turn, a philosophical life of self-reflection can bring tango to its most expressive and deeply meaningful manifestations. This outstanding book masterfully threads together the naturally congenial-yet often, for human beings, hard to harmonize-strands of the non-verbal, kinesthetic, and embodied nature of dance with the dialectical, conceptual, and reflective demands of philosophy. This work makes a much-needed contribution not only to the study and philosophy of dance, especially tango, but also to broader debates in practical philosophy, the philosophy of love, embodied approaches in the psychology and philosophy of cognition, Latin American philosophy, and, more generally, to investigations that situate themselves within the ancient tradition of philosophy as a way of life and a therapy for living."

A study of oil-rich Alberta reveals the entwined relationships among geoscience, governance, and power.
The Canadian province of Alberta holds the world's fourth-largest reserve of fossil fuels, with oil sands famous for bitumen, a viscous form of petroleum. A critical testing ground for international environmental ideas and energy policies, Alberta pioneered state-led efforts to understand, extract, and sell bitumen. Without natural access to ocean ports, Alberta must negotiate pipeline routes with neighboring provinces and nations to reach global markets. But Alberta is also landlocked in another sense: it is caught in an extractive relationship with oil-rich earth.
In Landlocked, Jeremy J. Schmidt focuses on Alberta's energy industry, particularly its use of water and oil, to argue for a new way of understanding how political authority is forged and maintained through the environment. Schmidt details how water and oil were enrolled in early state-making projects, such as irrigation, and examines the consequences of Alberta's efforts to extract value from land, including a series of events in 2013 that released 4.2 million barrels of bitumen into underground environments. By uncovering the ways that geosciences supported activities-from land settlement to the dispossession of Indigenous peoples-that produced environmental policies and approaches to management and governance, he shows that they aren't merely instruments of state power but central to Alberta's political identity and legitimacy.

How race, class, gender, and place shape the ways working-class young people in Britain envision their transition from education to work
How do the effects of deindustrialisation and neoliberalism influence young people's perceptions of work and education? In Cancelled Futures, Amit Singh examines how experiences of class-based inequality work through race, place, and gender in different ways. Moving beyond the usual framing of race versus class and the populist fixation with the white working class, Singh shows the intractable challenges that Black, Asian, and white young people share when they envision their futures in changing labour market conditions. Drawing on extensive interviews with sixty-two young working-class Britons, he describes the range of strategies they employ in the absence of viable economic opportunities-and the uneven results that follow.
Singh offers a vivid nationwide portrait, bringing together seemingly divergent locations and their youth-those living in proximity to the extraordinary wealth and perceived opportunity of the City of London, in the former northern mill town of Rochdale, and in the forgotten seaside town of Morecambe Bay-and captures the empathetic sense of struggle that many cultivate. Singh reveals that although the unique features of place raise distinctive racial and gendered reckonings with their circumstances and hopes, these young people have in common an increasingly fading sense of the future. Singh shows that they do not cling to the illusion that hard work pays off or the myth of meritocracy, but seek only to realise some sense of dignity and meaning amid a future that feels not just confusing but altogether absent.

Missed at Maastricht examines why the euro was born without the economic union that many believed was essential to sustain it.
The formation of the euro is often explained as either an accident of history or the grand vision of a few key leaders. Emmanuel Mourlon-Druol upends this account. Recovering the perspectives of overlooked officials and lesser-known committees, he shows that ambitious proposals for economic union-a planning bureau, an unemployment benefit, a deposit insurance scheme, a center for economic policy coordination, a borrowing capacity-were advanced from as early as 1957. The problem, ultimately, was not a lack of ideas; rather, it was a persistent refusal to centralize decision-making power in a supranational authority. Anything resembling a transfer of sovereignty to a European body was, for most policymakers, politically unthinkable-a "federal anathema."
Reframing the Economic and Monetary Union's lopsidedness not as a design failure of the early 1990s but as the culmination of decades of shelved ambitions, Missed at Maastricht offers essential context for understanding Europe's ongoing predicament.

This book provides a comprehensive overview to the science of happiness research. It discusses scholarly definitions and measurements, and factors-personal, social and cultural-that reliably increase happiness throughout the life-span. Anchored in psychology, philosophy, economics and public health, the book distils hundreds of peer-reviewed studies into one lucid, teachable framework. Part I?traces the idea from classical eudaimonia to modern positive psychology, then untangles more than thirty related terms-well-being, flourishing, thriving, life satisfaction and others-into a working map of key distinctions. The discussion shows why happiness remains one of the most diversely interpreted phenomena in the social sciences and why no single definition yet commands unanimous agreement. Part II?presents a multilevel map of determinants, starting with personality and health, then progressing to relationships, income, culture, and the built and natural environments. The final chapter in this part evaluates evidence-based interventions, showing how current research can inform realistic, context-sensitive pathways to greater well-being-from gratitude practices and mindset trainings to policy levers aimed at housing affordability, neighborhood quality, institutional fairness, and life-course support. Each chapter weighs competing findings, flags methodological caveats and pinpoints areas of empirical convergence. Written for graduate students, researchers and reflective practitioners, this book offers conceptual rigour without sacrificing readability. Readers will finish equipped to design stronger studies, craft data-driven policies and pursue personal well-being grounded in evidence rather than myth.

An expert compares renewables and nuclear power as sources of low-carbon energy for the electric grid
As the earth warms and we hurtle toward a climate reckoning, many nations are seeking low-carbon, greener ways to generate electricity. Electrification promises to power our vehicles, devices, and infrastructure in a decarbonized future. But, as Peter Wynn Kirby reminds us in The Coming Surge, electricity is only as green as the means used to produce it. Kirby sets up a head-to-head comparison of the two top contenders in the race to produce low-carbon energy for the electric grid: renewables and nuclear. Along the way, he makes predictions about technological development, from AI to automated traffic systems and grid sensor expansion, and considers how political shifts could influence energy policy and environmental outcomes. Through it all, perhaps improbably, he remains optimistic about human resilience and the fate of the planet.
Drawing on extensive fieldwork and research conducted in France, Japan, China, Puerto Rico, Finland, the Netherlands, and Germany, Kirby explores the way different countries are grappling with such issues as global warming, energy-sucking data centers, unsteady grids, infrastructure gigantism, extractive ideology, and carbon culture deprogramming. He finds that, rhetoric aside, nuclear power has fared poorly in a number of countries, including the United States, because it has been unable to compete on the basis of cost. As solar and wind costs have plummeted in recent years, renewables now appeal to municipal governments and utility companies even in deep red states like Oklahoma, Kansas, and especially Texas-the country's top wind producer. In the end, he suggests that the future of low-carbon power may hinge less on grand technological achievements than on which systems are quickly scalable and can survive the tumult of markets, politics, and time on a planet running out of leeway.

An inviting collection of Greek and Roman advice on letter writing-plus a gathering of illuminating and intimate letters from Cicero, Seneca, and Pliny
Email, texting, and AI appear to be sending the ancient art of letter writing to the verge of extinction. But this valuable skill doesn't have to become a dead letter. In a world drowning in generic and impersonal communication, now is a perfect time to rediscover the beauty of the personal letter-thoughtful, deliberate, and capable of building and strengthening friendships, romantic relationships, and family, social, and business ties. For inspiration and instruction on how to write a great letter, there are few better guides than the ancient Greeks and Romans, for whom letters were an essential, distinctive, and flexible form. In How to Write a Letter, Yelena Baraz presents lively new translations of selections from Greek and Roman letter-writing manuals and rhetorical treatises, plus a gathering of letters by three great Roman letter-writers-Marcus Tullius Cicero, Seneca the Younger, and Pliny the Younger-and the original Greek and Latin on facing pages.
The letter-writing manuals sampled here provide convenient classifications and formulas to their users while the rhetorical treatises offer instructions on tone, register, and length. The featured letters by Cicero, Seneca, and Pliny are tailored to different kinds of recipients, situations, and purposes-including consolation, invitation, recommendation, and to make or strengthen a connection-illustrating how to make every letter fit its occasion and addressee.
Filled with timeless insights about the epistolary art, How to Write a Letter is an instructive and enlightening reminder of why letters still offer a uniquely personal means of engaging with each other.

Vincent F. Hendricks's Sucker Nation asks the questions 'Why do intelligent, informed people continue to participate in systems they privately distrust?' and 'Why does exploitation persist even when manipulation is widely recognized?' This timely book argues that the answer lies in a structural 'hustler/sucker' distinction-not a matter of intelligence or morality, but of epistemic asymmetry and failed common knowledge. Drawing on game theory, epistemic logic, and the philosophy of attention, it shows how rational agents can become trapped in equilibria where acting reasonably still means paying a price, i.e. trading wits for vanity.
From financial markets and crypto bubbles to political communication, online scams, and platform society, agency itself becomes the resource that others extract. This book shows that to act, one must be visible; to be visible is to be exploitable. Insight does not dissolve this condition-it clarifies it. What remains is a tragic form of agency: damaged, unavoidable, and still necessary. A must-read for all those who have online lives - that means all of us ...

This edited volume examines the unforeseen effects of the notion of intangible heritage on conservation practices not only for urban contexts, but more generally for cultural practices. The notion of monumentality that UNESCO asserted focused on the material, tangible qualities of objects. It inevitably favoured European heritage sites and largely ignored forms of 'living' cultural heritage. This criticism not only came from scholars, but also from UNESCO member states from the Global South that addressed this omission and lobbied intensely for a more inclusive notion of World Heritage. One of the outcomes of these debates was the 2003 'Intangible Heritage Convention' - which was hoped to offer a remedy to the imbalanced global spread of World Heritage. Much academic research focuses on assessing whether or not the Convention indeed met its promises of broadening the heritage concept and ensuring a more even spread of World Heritage. Less attention has, however, been given to its unforeseen implications for contemporary heritage practices. By introducing less strict notions of authenticity, UNESCO and ICOMOS helped lay the conceptual grounds for many urban and industrial developments that it now resists. Urban planners, politicians and developers have used the notion of intangible cultural heritage to legitimize intrusive changes to historic urban landscapes or heritage sites. The introduction of the concept of intangible cultural heritage has thus not simply created 'just another list', but produced shifts in how we discuss, define and manage historic built environments in the 21st century.
The chapters address the history of the 'Intangible Heritage Convention', as well as its current uses in various contexts. The book includes both contributions that are theoretical in nature, as well as chapters that explore specific case studies. Key questions that the volume addresses include: How did the notion of heritage evolve to include cultural practices? What is the history of intangible heritage as concept and a practice? How did the notion of intangible heritage affect conservation philosophy and practice? How was the notion of intangible heritage criticized and by whom? How did the conservation philosophy evolve in relation to the notion of intangible heritage? And how do these issues influence views on and dealings with intangible heritage today?
The book brings together different disciplinary and cultural perspectives from different parts of the globe. Contributing authors are based in Southern Africa, Europe, South Asia and North America. The book's main audience includes academics interested in heritage and heritage practitioners.

This book investigates how police officers perceive the credibility of domestic and non-domestic battery victims by comparing and contrasting multiple points along case development. It draws on research with a police department in north central Florida involving 500 hours of ride-along with patrol officers and follows 34 cases of domestic and non-domestic battery. It examines how police officers describe and depict victims and their credibility during the initial encounters with incident participants, post-incident perceptions, and victim characterization in their subsequent police reports. The book triangulates statements made by officers with rich and immersive accounts and observations, case information from police reports, and police department policy documents. It provides an overview of the police organization, its procedures, and practices when dealing with both domestic and non-domestic batteries and describes the aspects that influence officers' perception of victim credibility.

An innovative examination of how talent, virtue and gendered expectations are negotiated in post-reform China
Under China's one-child policy, a generation of only daughters in the 1980s grew up with unprecedented access to university education and careers in high-paying fields. Often dubbed "little princesses", these brotherless girls had the benefit of parental ambition and family wealth that traditionally went to boys. And yet, as Ye Liu reveals in Only Daughters, this cohort of educated and privileged women did not go on to smash the patriarchy; instead, they were tripped up by cultural expectations. Liu shows that the one-child policy forced these women to grapple with the dual burden of achieving success usually reserved for men while upholding the traditional female virtues. Empowered as girls, as women they struggled to reconcile inherited ideals of filial piety and the state-imposed demographic duty to bear children with their own aspirations for autonomy and success.
Drawing on extensive interviews and observations, Liu traces the life-course transitions of siblingless daughters, aligning them with key phases of China's structural transformation. She shows that the momentum of their girlhood successes collided with a patriarchal backlash, which limited their choices in the labour market, marriage and motherhood. Liu finds that, having abandoned the ideology of meritocracy and acknowledged that the conditions of their empowerment were temporary, these women adopt strategies that blend neoliberal self-reliance with traditional cultural values. With this timely account, Liu sheds new light on the resilience and adaptability of women within patriarchal systems in China and beyond.

Flying Brothers drops you into cockpits and crisis rooms across the Cold War: supersonic F-5s herding rebel "Tora-Toras" over Manila in 1989, F-86 Sabres firing the first Sidewinder missiles against MiG-17s above the Taiwan Strait in 1958, and AT-6s striking a mutinous warship on a river in downtown Bangkok in 1951.
Instead of retelling Vietnam, Flying Brothers follows America's three treaty allies in Southeast Asia - Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines - showing how they built airpower that actually worked. The deal was stark: trade territory for technology. By hosting US bases, these countries gained jets, radar, and training they couldn't otherwise afford - while wrestling with the sovereignty headaches that came with a foreign force on their soil.
At the heart of the story are "diplomats in flight suits": American advisors flying, fixing, and planning alongside their counterparts to turn hand-me-down aircraft into credible defenses and hard-won victories-from the Philippines' air-ground campaign against the Huks to Taiwan's measured, missile-age deterrence. Along the way, Daniel Jackson highlights dogfights, ramp-side ingenuity, and the annual "Flying Brothers" weapons meets that forged real fraternity among allied airmen.
For readers of military and aviation history, Cold War strategy, and Southeast Asia, this is a fast-moving, clear-eyed account of how alliances actually fight: not with speeches, but with checklists, radar tracks, and pilots who know when to hold fire - and when to press the attack. The result is a persuasive case that well-run advisory missions, tied to coherent political-military aims, can succeed at far lower cost than direct US intervention.
