This work chronicles the lives and legacies of Chicana and Chicano scholars whose formative experiences in the Chicano Movement shaped the development of Chicano studies and transformed higher education. Originating from the Reuniones de Colegas Chicanas-gatherings of veteran scholars reflecting on their shared histories-the volume features sixteen essays organized into five thematic sections that explore the intersections of activism, scholarship, and institutional change.

The contributors document how grassroots organizing evolved into academic inquiry, leading to the creation of departments, student support systems, and policy reforms that advanced equity and representation in universities. Essays address how community-engaged research influenced urban planning, health advocacy, and cultural production, while also highlighting Indigenous and transnational epistemologies that redefined theoretical frameworks in Chicano studies. The volume concludes with reflections on academic leadership and the breaking of barriers by Chicana scholars in higher education administration.

This book states that inequality has become one of central policy issues across the world. We study trends of inequality in earnings, income, and wealth across households in Japan, using the National Survey of Family Income and Expenditure (NSFIE) from 1984 to 2014. Inequality in earnings, income, and wealth all increased during the last three decades. Changes in earnings and income inequality were mostly driven by demographic aging and a shift of the population to the elderly, who tend to have higher inequality. The wealth inequality rose not only in the aggregate but also among the young, and this is due to a major increase in the fraction of households who own zero or very low wealth across all age groups, rather than an increase in the concentration of wealth in the top as in some other countries such as the USA. Critical factors in understanding inequality trends in Japan that we identified are aging demographics, changes in the household structure, and macroeconomic trends of the past decades including the financial bubble period and a decades-long slow-down thereafter.

At one end of the spectrum, any tax legislation is legitimate if the country has a democratic system of government because the peoples' representatives have voted for it. At the other end of the spectrum, no tax can be justified on philosophical grounds because all governments are bands of thieves. A middle position is that taxation can generally be justified, but that some taxes are better than others, either from a utilitarian or deontological perspective. If a tax that is transparent and visible is better than a tax that is obscure or hidden, why are so many taxes obscure or hidden? There is a general belief that everyone must pay their "fair share" of taxes, but the term "fair share" is conveniently undefinable. Is a graduated income tax morally justifiable, or would some other approach be better? Could/should the income tax be replaced with a consumption tax, or should a consumption tax be viewed as a supplement to an income tax? This book poses alternative theoretical modes of understanding the terrorist act as "disclosure" through a critical appropriation of J.L. Austin's speech act theory and a rigorous exploration of the Foucauldian revision of classical claims for the parrhesiast. This book explores terrorism's performative inscriptions of ritualized atrocity and its invocation of an existential register of "truth telling." Exploring the Boston Marathon Bombing as an exemplar, this work takes as its subject a contemporary terroristic pattern constituted by 1) an act of irruptive, spectacular, violence that 2) prompts (seduces) an investigation and engagement with a manifesto, and 3) results in agonistic rituals of adjudication of truth that are rarely convergent with the original intended disclosure. This phenomenon, the book argues, can be productively thought of as a failed ontological disclosure enunciated by the perpetrators. Such a failure is not the simple matter of an uncompelling rhetorical claim, or the unsuccessful transmission of information. The terrorist act succeeds, in fact, in a kind of seduction that prompts an investigation around which tremendous resources are expended. Such acts seek to catalyze a form of recognition of the perpetrator's being that is never fully realized. The existentially underwritten disclosure is doomed, then, to be passed over unheard, and yet its inherent infelicity makes it recognizable as a terrorist act.
