This open access book is self-standing as the only substantive anthology of writings centered on John Dupre's work. Dupre is internationally regarded as one of the most prominent living philosophers of science. His work has had a profound impact on philosophy and biology over the last half century. From fundamental questions about classification to metaphysical debates about the nature of organisms and life, Dupre's writings have changed how scholars look at the life sciences and the natural world. But it is not just his published output that has re-shaped the field. It is also his philosophical methodology, characterised by a naturalistic and interdisciplinary approach. In part this approach was shaped by Dupre's interactions with natural and social scientists, an aspect of his approach to philosophy that is also reflected in his role as a co-founder and then Director of the Egenis Centre for the Study of Life Sciences. This book, edited and authored by many of the world's leading philosophers of the life sciences provides a key text on the interdisciplinary study of the life sciences with a particular emphasis on philosophy. It is of interest to philosophers of science and forms a methodological reference point for students in this field.

This book explores topics related to sustainability, including the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and accountability in various activities. Following the success of Volume 1, this sequel deepens the exploration of sustainability and the UN's 17 SDGs. It expands on the complex, evolving landscape of organizational efforts toward sustainability, highlighting new use cases and perspectives from global contributors-including UNITAR, Sorbonne Qatar, Ca' Foscari and IUAV in Venice and numerous other universities, and leading local and regional governments and NGOs. Rather than offering a single "Big Picture," it embraces the diversity of bottom-up and top-down initiatives, emphasizing the Three-Pillar-Model and the power of purpose, transformation, and connectivity. Historical and contemporary examples illustrate the urgency and momentum of change. This volume aims to inspire organizations to shape their own journeys and contribute meaningfully to a fair, sustainable future.

In late 1970, South Vietnamese forces captured a man who, they soon discovered, was no ordinary prisoner. The highest-ranking North Vietnamese officer taken captive during the war, Nguy?n Tai ran an extensive communist clandestine security and intelligence network in Saigon that infiltrated the South Vietnamese government and carried out targeted assassinations. His arrest triggered one of the most intense and prolonged interrogations of the war, conducted by both South Vietnamese and American intelligence services, including the CIA. After many years of service in the postwar government, Nguy?n Tai published this memoir in 1999, recounting how he resisted relentless efforts to break him.

This gripping firsthand account is at once a rare glimpse into the shadow war of espionage and a harrowing story of survival. Nguy?n Tai's unvarnished testimony depicts years of psychological and physical pressure, with detailed descriptions of CIA and South Vietnamese interrogation techniques. It offers valuable insights into not only the tactics used by the United States and its allies during the Vietnam War but also the ethical and strategic dilemmas facing intelligence operations. Both chilling and thought-provoking, Face to Face with the CIA is essential reading for anyone interested in Cold War history and the moral complexities of intelligence work.

There is a common narrative of Brazilian racial exceptionalism-that Brazilian society is more racially harmonious than other multiracial countries or, more simply, that Brazil is less racist than the United States. Many Brazilians even point to anti-Black violence in the United States to exceptionalize their own country, minimizing the structural barriers facing Afro-Brazilians and the degree to which racial inequality and prejudice permeate Brazilian society. Reighan Gillam offers a new perspective by showing how Afro-Brazilians draw on African American history and culture to argue that Brazil is typical, not exceptional, emphasizing common experiences across the African diaspora.

Diasporic Connections explores how Afro-Brazilians find parallels with African Americans in performance, films, print culture, and everyday conversation. Gillam considers cases such as a staging of Katori Hall's play The Mountaintop and the appearance of Black Power figures at lectures and in films. She examines how Afro-Brazilian activists seek to instill the energy of the Black freedom struggle into local social movements, underscoring that lessons from the United States are applicable to Brazil while insisting on their own agency. Discussions of Black representation on television, the visibility of mixed-race people, and the shared experiences of Black women across national boundaries all call Brazilian exceptionalism into question. Based on textual analysis, ethnography, and close interpretation of key works, this book highlights how Afro-Brazilians reframe Brazil's racial politics as unexceptional and reveals the surprising ways that diasporic ties are forged.

This work offers a groundbreaking account of how Chicana/o activists have engaged in sustained efforts to reclaim Indigenous identity through political struggle, cultural expression, and transnational solidarity.

Author Jose Luis Serrano Najera takes an in-depth look at the history of Chicana/o indigeneity, starting with the Chicana/o Movement of the 1960s and 1970s and through twenty-first century transnational activism and solidarity movements. Serrano Najera reveals how claims to indigeneity were rooted in reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities and driven by a shared commitment to decolonization. Through chapters on visual and performing arts, ceremony, education, and grassroots organizing, this book challenges reductive narratives of cultural appropriation and instead foregrounds the complex and historically grounded nature of Chicana/o indigeneity.

Drawing on extensive archival research, Serrano Najera demonstrates how Chicana/o indigeneity has contributed to broader Indigenous rights movements, including efforts that culminated in the 2007 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This work highlights the intercontinental dimensions of Chicana/o activism and offers a vital source for scholars and students in Chicana/o studies, Indigenous studies, ethnic studies, history, and political science. Confronting Colonial Legacies is a compelling call to rethink the politics of identity, sovereignty, and solidarity across the Americas.

Making Freedom Work tells the stories of five free women of color in antebellum New Orleans. The lives of Eulalie Mandeville, Henriette Delille, Marie Couvent, Cecille Bonille, and Marie Dolores Laveaux reveal the economic, legal, and cultural strategies free Black women used to move through a racially stratified, patriarchal slave society. Janet Morrison argues that free women of color could play a crucial role in the city's economic, religious, and communal life, even as they navigated and contested the restraints placed upon them by their race and gender. Foregrounding the voices of these women and their families, Morrison recovers stories that have long been marginalized in New Orleans history.

During a period of profound transformation in New Orleans-including French and Spanish colonial legacies, imposed American racial hierarchies after the Louisiana Purchase, and increased mobility within the Atlantic world-these five women found numerous ways to exercise their agency in a world that was not designed for them. They owned businesses, accumulated property, pursued litigation, engaged in philanthropy, and provided religious leadership, all while building durable networks of care, education, and spirituality. Avoiding the dangers of outright rebellion, the women employed strategies of gendered resistance-refusal, adaptation, collaboration-that often proved very successful, carving out space for survival in ways that confounded societal expectations of who they could be and what they could accomplish.

Morrison draws on a rich trove of archival sources such as censuses, city directories, notarial records, wills, successions, and court cases. Recognizing that these records were produced within white-controlled bureaucratic systems, Making Freedom Work attends closely to both their evidentiary value and their silences. It also confronts the complexities of slaveholding by free people of color, interpreting it as part of a broader struggle for security, status, and distance from enslavement, while emphasizing the uneven and contingent relationships between enslavers and the enslaved.

Making Freedom Work reintroduces these women-so often dismissed and devalued in their own time-as central historical actors, highlighting their influence as entrepreneurs, community builders, educators, and mothers of the next generation.

Hedging, not balancing or bandwagoning, is the modal behavior of the non-great powers under uncertainty. Despite its prevalence as a state alignment choice, hedging has remained an undertheorized subject in the study of international relations. This Element presents one of the first theoretical works on strategic hedging in world politics. Tracing the multidisciplinary roots of hedging as an instinctive human behavior, I contend that sovereign actors hedge in ways similar to commodity traders, farmers, fund managers, academic writers, politicians, and individuals in competitive organizations under conditions of high-stakes and high-uncertainties. I then develop a two-level theoretical framework to explain when, how and why states hedge, rather than balance or bandwagon. Using selected Indo-Pacific countries as empirical cases, I conclude that while structural-level conditions largely explain the shifts in alignment decisions (e.g., from non-hedging to hedging, or vice versa), domestic factors explain the variations in hedging choices.

Sustainability is not a compliance obligation, a cost, or a moral afterthought. Properly managed, it is a powerful lever for value creation.

As the cracks in the neoliberal growth model deepen, and under the accelerating collapse of natural ecosystems, a new paradigm is emerging.

The Seven Principles Playbook for Sustainable Companies provides a framework for embedding sustainability into the structural DNA of businesses. Drawing on years of hands-on work with impact investors, entrepreneurs, auditors, legislators, private equity firms, and multinational executives, it distils what truly makes a company sustainable, not just on paper, but in practice.

Through real-world case studies, the book helps executives decipher sustainability through three essential lenses: ESG risk and compliance for investors, CSR and societal engagement for stakeholders, and, ultimately, long-term value creation for all. It discusses leading edge technologies and introduces practical tools and frameworks for leaders ready to move beyond reporting and into regeneration

This is not another inspirational business book-it's a guidebook for those who understand that the future of business depends on its ability to both thrive within planetary boundaries and also meet rising societal expectations. With clarity, rigor, and vision it equips leaders with all they need to transform sustainability from a side project into a core guiding strategy for long-lasting value creation.

In Fearless Philanthropy, Roberta Brandes Gratz tells the story of Edith Rosenwald Stern-rich, progressive, and Jewish-who arrived in New Orleans in 1921, the wife of successful cotton broker Edgar Bloom Stern. Edith encountered a city rife with racism and antisemitism, and run by a set of entrenched social rules that she was not about to abide by. Her father, Julius Rosenwald of Sears & Roebuck, one of the richest men in America, had begun transforming lives of Black Americans in the South through his efforts to promote Black education. Edith proceeded to follow in his footsteps, and with her willing partner Edgar helped revolutionize aspects of New Orleans still visible today.

In telling the story of the Sterns, Gratz spotlights the outsider category of Jews in New Orleans, the specific impacts of the Mardi Gras social structure upon them, and the Sterns' influence on education in the South. Edith founded two pioneering educational institutions, while Edgar led a biracial group in the founding of Dillard University and Flint-Goodridge Hospital to serve the Black community. In 1947, Edgar purchased New Orleans radio station WDSU for son Edgar Jr. to run, and a year later Edgar Jr. opened WDSU-TV, the sixth major television station in the South. WDSU editorials favoring school integration, together with Edith's financial support of the desegregation campaign of the local women's group Save Our Schools, had a great impact during a volatile time. Edgar's rebuilding of the St. Louis Hotel (now the Royal Orleans), begun in the late 1940s and continued throughout the next decade, helped initiate the revitalization of the deteriorating French Quarter. As if that weren't enough, the Sterns led the development of Pontchartrain Park, the first Black middle-class housing development in the United States backed by the FHA.

Gratz's passionate account of Edith and Edgar Stern, showing how they grappled with issues of Black rights, philanthropy, civil rights, education, historic preservation, and the arts in a political and social climate antagonistic to change, provides a fascinating chronicle of New Orleans during a period of pivotal development.

Natural law theory is a major contemporary school of philosophy of law. This Element provides a critical overview of recent lines of thought in this tradition. Section 1 considers the defining claims of natural law jurisprudence, including strong and weak natural law views. Sections 2 to 5 examine four contemporary lines of natural law argument: functional arguments, the argument from context, the argument from injustice and the central case method. Functional arguments remain the oldest and best route to the natural law thesis. The argument from context also has promise, whereas the argument from injustice and the central case method fail to yield robust natural law conclusions. Section 6 reflects on the future of natural law jurisprudence. It explores a possible reframing of natural law theories, away from the prevailing emphasis on legal validity or defectiveness, and towards an understanding of law as a natural phenomenon.

This book proposes a new perspective on mapping and measuring urban live music ecologies. Music makes a significant economic and cultural contribution to cities, and each local context produces a complex live music ecosystem composed of musical and non-musical actors, infrastructures and regulatory frameworks. This complexity presents a challenge for policymakers and businesses seeking to make informed strategic decisions. To address this challenge, the volume explores two core themes: firstly, the valuation and measurement of live music ecologies by recognising the interdependencies between venues, stakeholders, infrastructures and policy environments. Secondly, it considers mapping as an analytical tool for identifying spatial patterns, relationships and inequalities within live music ecosystems. Together, these approaches help address key policy questions and offer evidence-based insights to support more informed decisionmaking for live music industries and communities in urban environments.

A renowned Buddhist visionary who was recognized as a reincarnation of Tibet's preeminent female saint, Yeshe Tsogyel, Sera Khandro Dewe Dorje (1892-1940) was also a prolific writer with remarkable literary gifts. This book presents the unabridged translation of her extraordinary autobiography-one of only a handful of life stories written by women in Tibetan literature.

Sera Khandro's chronicle intersperses the story of her spiritual awakening with candid accounts of the difficulty, misogyny, and injustice of everyday life in the nomadic pastoral culture of eastern Tibet. Even as she enters otherworldly realms and encounters deities and spirits, she endures the sufferings typical of women's lives in this time and place. In vivid detail, she relates prophecies and celestial visions alongside deeply human emotions like joy and sorrow, depression and rage, passionate love and fathomless grief.

Brimming with spiritual insight, eloquent figurative language, and forthright storytelling, the book intermingles genres such as poetry, songs, and vernacular dialogue. It features evocative portrayals of Tibetan landscapes and culture, redolent of alpine pastures and grazing livestock, together with intricate descriptions of transcendent experiences. Sera Khandro's autobiography is not only an invaluable resource for understanding the lives of Tibetan Buddhist women but also a beautiful and poignant work of literature.

The book features forewords by Sogen Rinpoche Pema Lodoe, spiritual director of Tupten Osel Choling and holder of Sera Khandro's spiritual lineage, and Lama Jabb, lecturer in Tibetan language at the University of Oxford.

This book provides unique insight into the Ethiopian economy and the political economy challenges it faces. With a particular focus on the rise and fall of the EPRDF, it explores the ways in which African economies can overcome historical and political setbacks to induce economic growth and transformation. By examining the defining policies of the EPRDF and changes made by the PP, the ways in which African countries can generate growth, develop democracy, tackle internal conflict, and bolster regional and international relations are outlined.

This book draws from the experiences of Ethiopia to offer a pathway for African transformation. It will be relevant to students, researchers, and policymakers interested in development economics, economic policy, and the political economy of Africa.

Explores how and why an elite member of the legal profession, Arthur Garfield Hays, confronted and fought against the ingrained racism of his society, illuminating key aspects of the long civil rights era.

Beginning in 1925 the corporate lawyer and civil libertarian Arthur Garfield Hays began battling segregation. This book details Hays's work on the Mayor's Commission that investigated the1935 Harlem riot; his role in a 1937 restrictive covenant case in Westchester, County; his representing a challenger to the segregated draft in World War II; his part in ending the exclusion of African Americans from the American Bar Association; and his opposition to strong fair employment legislation. Motivated by his conception of a good society that valued civil liberties, democracy, and individualism, Hays fought for African Americans' legal rights under the Constitution. His activism was limited by his conservative economic views and his fear of an active state that intervened in private matters. His career illuminates the potential and perils of interracial co-operation during the long civil rights movement. Because the issues he confronted continue today-police mistreatment of African Americans, housing discrimination, limits on African Americans in the professions, racial discrimination in the military, and how to build government structures to limit discrimination-this book speaks to our time as well as his.

This is an Open access book which examines learning-based innovation (LBI) in working life. It presents innovation as a continuous process embedded in the everyday practices of organizations, shaped by the competence, learning, and participation of employees, and made visible through diverse projects, outcomes, and value creation. The book offers four learning-based perspectives on innovation activities, focusing on innovation actors and the roles they construct, the nature of the competence and learning practices required for innovation, LBI projects and their multifaceted value creation, as well as the challenges of innovation and workplace pedagogical approaches to addressing them. The work is based on the EDLI - Employee-Driven Learning and Innovation - research project (2022-2025), drawing on empirical data from two Finnish organizations: the police and a technology-sector organization. The book makes a scientific contribution to research on workplace learning and (employee-driven) innovation, offering rich empirical examples and new theoretical insights for researchers and students. At the same time, it provides accessible perspectives and practical ideas for practitioners in working life, including working-life experts, leaders, and employees.

Arc of Ambedkar's Fraternity focuses on B. R. Ambedkar in the light of recent global interest in constitutional fraternity. The book locates his work in the context of contemporary scholarship and examines deliberations on fraternity in the Constituent Assembly in relation to democracy and the divisions of caste, class, and religion. It looks at Supreme Court judgements and legal discussions that gradually interpreted Ambedkar's fraternity to frame state obligations and the socioeconomic rights of individuals and groups in relation to each other. Robinson reflects on the disappearance of fraternity and emergence of secularism as the focus of Indian social science debates, and the book highlights the need to bridge this gap by considering how the two are interconnected. Finally, the discussion turns to another strand in Ambedkar's thought, which located fraternity in religion, specifically, Navayana Buddhism, and questioned the limitations of democratic constitutionalism and secular law in creating fraternity. This perspective is read in the light of Derrida, who similarly indicated the paradox of fraternity in modern democracy. Ambedkar's Buddhism is thus interpreted not as an abandonment of politics or its practical resolution, but as an acknowledgement of the indeterminacy involved in keeping fraternity and democracy open to what is to come.

Between 1880 and 1910, as Jim Crow's legal apparatus transformed Louisiana's complex racial landscape into a stark binary, Creole women fought to preserve their community's distinctive identity through the most ordinary acts of daily life. In their households, they cultivated kinship arrangements that prioritized mutual care over conventional family structures. In workshops and factories, they navigated the degradation of traditional occupations while strategically avoiding associations with Black women's labor. In churches, they deployed Catholic sacraments to formalize social bonds and secure legal protections. In courtrooms, they exploited Louisiana's racial ambiguities to defend their families and assert their claims to elevated status. Through these seemingly mundane spheres of daily existence, Creole women resisted the racial order that sought to collapse all people of African descent into a single category of Blackness.

Making Creole: Women and the Creole Community in Early Jim Crow New Orleans examines how Creole women took action against the systematic erosion of their privileges. As Louisiana moved from recognizing the legal status of free people of color to enforcing rigid Jim Crow segregation, Creole women became the primary architects of sociocultural preservation. Before the Civil War, Louisiana law had distinguished all free persons of African descent as legally separate from both enslaved persons and white people, granting them specific rights and privileges based on their "free" status rather than their complexion alone. The end of slavery eliminated this legal distinction. By the early twentieth century, Jim Crow legislation systematically forced all people of African descent into a single racialized category of Blackness, erasing the complex racial hierarchies that had previously structured Louisiana society. In this context, Creole women's labor in managing complex kinship networks, preserving Franco-Catholic traditions, policing community boundaries, and strategically navigating legal institutions constituted essential political work that sustained not just families but an entire ethnic community under siege.

Using an innovative "speculative demography" methodology, Natasha L. McPherson analyzes more than nine thousand transcribed records from census data, court documents, and Catholic church registers, including materials from the Sisters of the Holy Family, to reconstruct patterns of Creole women's resistance between 1880 and 1910. Making Creole moves beyond traditional narratives of political organizing to illuminate how women's everyday practices became mechanisms of ethnic identity formation and cultural survival, revealing resistance from the intimate spaces where it actually occurred.

This book examines the justification for taxation and identifies the ethical tax issues. It also provides a blueprint for tax reform and advises on tax policy. At one end of the spectrum, any tax legislation is legitimate if the country has a democratic system of government because the peoples' representatives have voted for it. At the other end of the spectrum, no tax can be justified on philosophical grounds because all governments are bands of thieves. A middle position is that taxation can generally be justified, but that some taxes are better than others, either from a utilitarian or deontological perspective. If a tax that is transparent and visible is better than a tax that is obscure or hidden, why are so many taxes obscure or hidden? There is a general belief that everyone must pay their "fair share" of taxes, but the term "fair share" is conveniently undefinable. Is a graduated income tax morally justifiable, or would some other approach be better? Could/should the income tax be replaced with a consumption tax, or should a consumption tax be viewed as a supplement to an income tax? Should the purpose of taxation be to raise revenue, or should the tax system also be used to alter behavior by taxing "bad" things like alcohol and tobacco products or subsidizing green energy initiatives? This book explores some of these questions.

Framing the global "Whistleblowers' Revolution" as a vital response to democratic malaise, this volume examines the socio-legal dynamics surrounding the exposure of illegal or unethical practices in both the public and private sectors. The analysis covers innovative legal frameworks and protective regimes across multiple jurisdictions while also closing the divide between theory and practice. The volume brings together contributions from distinguished scholars and practitioners alongside firsthand accounts from whistleblowers, resulting in a holistic approach that evaluates existing and prospective measures aimed at empowering truth-tellers and confronting entrenched cultures of silence.

The volume is structured to connect theory with lived experience. It moves from a transnational socio-legal analysis of global conditions (Part 1) to critical jurisdiction-based assessments across multiple countries (Part 2). The work then culminates in a series of firsthand narratives (Part 3), offered by insiders whose accounts reveal the significance, personal costs, and institutional consequences tied to speaking truth to power.

Contributors bring Irigaray's concept of the threshold to bear on a range of issues in this innovative, transdisciplinary volume.

In Luce Irigaray's work, the threshold (le seuil) designates a new horizon of space and time, and therein a transformative possibility of relation through difference. Thresholds of Irigaray brings together a diverse set of scholarly voices-including renowned philosophers George Yancy and Kristin Sampson-to think with, through, and beyond Irigaray's concept of the threshold. While part 1 focuses on immanent readings of Irigaray's work and part 2 extends her work beyond her own aims, all of the essays in this volume envision the threshold as a resource for engaging pressing philosophical, ethical, and political concerns. Contributors approach topics ranging from sustainable farming practices, architectural design, and science fiction fandom to the racialization of sexuate difference, fetal personhood, and the nature of the universe itself. Through these innovative explorations of the space and time of relation, Thresholds of Irigaray affirms the applicability of Irigaray's thought not only to different disciplines but also to the challenges of living in today's world and creating new worlds.
