Brief Encounters offers the first extended exploration of a distinct and often overlooked corpus of travel documentaries made by foreign filmmakers in Israel and British-Mandate Palestine over the past century. Focusing in particular on the tumultuous period of the 1960s to 1970s, Ohad Landesman shows how renowned filmmakers such as Chris Marker, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jules Dassin, Susan Sontag, and Claude Lanzmann turned to the essayistic travelogue to grapple with a bitter reality of armed conflicts and political upheavals. At the journey's outset, each filmmaker had a different vision of Israel in mind, shaped by either socialist ideals, biblical myths, or Zionist sympathies. Yet what was found rarely affirmed initial expectations. And accordingly, these travelogues end up becoming testaments to disillusionment, as the filmmakers come to confront the unrealizability of their fantasies through the landscape of Israel. Using close analysis, the book aims to recover the significance of such transnational perspectives for what they say about the evolving image of the Israeli nation and, more broadly, the fruitful intersection of cinema and travel.

This book examines how climate change significantly impacts the public interest of national states, affecting a wide range of human rights, economic activities, development projects, and security. This book highlights the complexity of the legal discipline of climate change, which is a polycentric phenomenon because its causes and possible responses are subject to various decision-making levels and are cumulative over time. Additionally, this book addresses the need for norm creation in a scenario of risk and scientific uncertainty, as well as the socio-political conflicts generated.

Given these factors, this book emphasizes the role of national states in the legal regulation of climate change, as, although it is a global problem, they are the ones who set emission reduction targets and regulate the behavior of individuals and corporations to achieve them. In recent years, various climate laws have been created or amended in several countries, indicating a push for juridification around the issue.

Considering this context, this book argues that the legal discipline of climate change in Brazilian law requires the legislative structuring of a national policy compatible with the constitutional foundations and international commitments undertaken by Brazil, capable of dealing with the problem in a crosscutting manner and covering various economic sectors. This book analyzes the bases for formulating this climate policy, consisting of the foundations that should underpin it.

Firstly, this book highlights that the justice aspects involved are relevant to guide the definitions of the distribution of the impacts of climate change and the measures to mitigate them. This open access book presents the findings of a research project conducted through the auspices of the Wisdom in Practice (WiP) programme funded by the Research Council of Finland. To live through a film festival is to live through an intensive emotive experience of film viewings, encounters with friends and strangers, travel, displacement and the exploration of new spaces - both real and imaginary. It is the disorientating experience of this modern-day carnivalesque which marks a time out of time of a film festival when the norms of the everyday cinema-based or home-based film viewing experience are suspended, challenged or upended. Although some aspects of the film festival experience have changed over a long history of film festival cultures there are others that remain constant: an effort emotional and physical to attend a festival, excitement or festival buzz of being part of a festival, a sense of community of viewers rooted in the individual response to films, and the impact of seeing a film in the festival environment which ranges from pleasurable and inspiration through boring to outrages and abject.

Dorota Ostrowska's book explores the uniqueness of this occasionally irreverent, often disruptive and at times unsettling festival experience for the diverse festival audiences through the concept of festive chronotopes. It argues the importance of space for our understanding of festival experience as it is this space, intimate and collective, that shapes film festival programmes, moulds curational and programming practice and critical response, and drives the desire for the festive experience to be repeated and reinvented on annual basis.

In the last four decades Latin America has experienced one of the fastest growing higher education sectors in the world. 25 million students are currently enrolled in more than 3,800 universities. What underpins the legitimacy of the prison system in the twenty-first century? Despite numerous challenges and setbacks, there is still a widespread belief that prisons can be improved in a socially progressive way. Even today, 'model prisons' are being built that seek to fix the shortcomings and failures of their predecessors, as if past failures were due to a lack of imagination, determination, or resources.

The aim of creating model prisons is not new: it dates back to the early nineteenth century. Ranging from England to Switzerland and Spain, from Russia to China and India, Carceral Utopia documents a rich, global history of ambitious efforts to create model prisons - places of confinement initially lauded for their progressive ideals but later revealed as fiascos.

At the end of this journey through time and space, it will not suffice merely to highlight the gap between plans and realities, or even to dispel the illusion that model prisons could not live up to their claims.
