This handbook offers a comprehensive and accessible guide to critical applied linguistics and language education, exploring how power, inequality, and social change shape linguistic issues, educational practices, and research agendas. Bringing together leading scholars and emerging voices from around the world, it equips researchers, educators, students, and policymakers with critical frameworks and perspectives for building more equitable and socially responsible approaches to language and language education. The volume is organized into two parts. The first, Critical Projects in Applied Linguistics and Language Education, highlights established domains operating under explicit critical labels, demonstrating how criticality shapes research, pedagogy, and policy. The second, Critical Perspectives in Applied Linguistics and Language Education, examines contemporary social, political, environmental, and educational issues through a critical lens. Together, the handbook positions criticality as a reorienting force in applied linguistics and language education that confronts inequality, deepens inquiry, and sustains hope for transforming an uneven world.

This book brings an eclectic mix of contributors from around the world together to share important insights about policy advice and policy making in education- to give readers a better sense of what policy creation can entail, and who might be and how they might be involved. Coming from a range of jurisdictions, the chapters in this book have been authored by people with important insights to share from their experiences of doing and researching policy advice and policy making in education: civil servants, consultants, knowledge mobilizers, school staff, and university-based researchers and teacher educators.

While many chapters focus on policy advice and policy making at national and subnational levels, others challenge the common (mis)perception that policy making is confined to governments. Thus, there are chapters that illustrate that education policy is produced in education institutions such as schools too. Moreover, other chapters highlight how intermediary bodies and higher education academics are shaping education policy at various levels.

Taken together the chapters in Advising on and Making Education Policy: New Perspectives on Past and Present Procedures reveal some of the inner workings of government departments, exemplify educators, students and parents as policy makers, and highlight how there are a wide range of additional groups and individuals having influence and impact in the policy ecosystem.

Between 1880 and 1910, as Jim Crow's legal apparatus transformed Louisiana's complex racial landscape into a stark binary, Creole women fought to preserve their community's distinctive identity through the most ordinary acts of daily life. In their households, they cultivated kinship arrangements that prioritized mutual care over conventional family structures. In workshops and factories, they navigated the degradation of traditional occupations while strategically avoiding associations with Black women's labor. In churches, they deployed Catholic sacraments to formalize social bonds and secure legal protections. In courtrooms, they exploited Louisiana's racial ambiguities to defend their families and assert their claims to elevated status. Through these seemingly mundane spheres of daily existence, Creole women resisted the racial order that sought to collapse all people of African descent into a single category of Blackness.

Making Creole: Women and the Creole Community in Early Jim Crow New Orleans examines how Creole women took action against the systematic erosion of their privileges. As Louisiana moved from recognizing the legal status of free people of color to enforcing rigid Jim Crow segregation, Creole women became the primary architects of sociocultural preservation. Before the Civil War, Louisiana law had distinguished all free persons of African descent as legally separate from both enslaved persons and white people, granting them specific rights and privileges based on their "free" status rather than their complexion alone. The end of slavery eliminated this legal distinction. By the early twentieth century, Jim Crow legislation systematically forced all people of African descent into a single racialized category of Blackness, erasing the complex racial hierarchies that had previously structured Louisiana society. In this context, Creole women's labor in managing complex kinship networks, preserving Franco-Catholic traditions, policing community boundaries, and strategically navigating legal institutions constituted essential political work that sustained not just families but an entire ethnic community under siege.

Using an innovative "speculative demography" methodology, Natasha L. McPherson analyzes more than nine thousand transcribed records from census data, court documents, and Catholic church registers, including materials from the Sisters of the Holy Family, to reconstruct patterns of Creole women's resistance between 1880 and 1910. Making Creole moves beyond traditional narratives of political organizing to illuminate how women's everyday practices became mechanisms of ethnic identity formation and cultural survival, revealing resistance from the intimate spaces where it actually occurred.

Leo Tolstoy had a deep and long-lasting interest in Plato. This study looks at the way some particularly well-known Platonic themes can be found in War and Peace and Anna Karenina. The themes in question include the journey between the mundane and the eternal (most famously represented in the allegory of the cave), the theory of recollection, and the need to purify the soul of bodily passions. The study begins with an account of Tolstoy's interest in Plato and an overview of the three central themes as they appear in the Phaedo, Republic, Symposium and Phaedrus. It then turns to specific episodes in War and Peace and Anna Karenina where a central character experiences an epiphany or a similar process of inspiration. Cathartic in nature, these episodes show the character rising from a mundane level of experience towards an entirely new level, variously described as infinite, eternal or divine.

An engaging and timely essay collection on the challenges, risks, and opportunities of this historic moment in American law and governance. 1,000-word essays from the country s leading legal scholars and experts. It is the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. is grappling with foundational challenges to its laws, institutions of governance, and civic culture. Longstanding values of pluralism are being challenged. The nation is beset by deep political polarization, a fear that the economic order is no longer providing opportunities for all, and a technology revolution that may unsettle what it means to be uniquely human. America Unfinished brings together more than 50 legal scholars on the Harvard Law School faculty to analyze this historic moment in American law and governance. Edited by Alexandra Natapoff and Guy-Uriel Charles, the book coheres around the dramatic experiment in American legal governance that began in 1776, still highly contested after 250 years. Some essays explore the modern expansion of executive power, including its recent and dramatic willingness to use violence, both domestically and internationally. Other essays examine longstanding divides between workers, consumers, and markets, and the hard questions they raise about democratic accountability in our market-driven economy. And finally, some contributors address the future of our knowledge and governance institutions under pressure from the disruptions caused by technological and informational revolution. Dynamic and engaging, the collection does nothing less than advance the core conversations necessary for a thriving polity, both at this historic moment and for decades to come. Contributors: Bill Alford, Sabrineh Ardalan, Yochai Benkler, Sharon Block, Nikolas Bowie, Maureen Brady, Scott Brewer, Stephen Breyer, Emily Broad Leib, Tomiko Brown-Nagin, Guy-Uriel E. In the early nineteenth-century United States, a number of architects began to see their profession as a higher calling. Even as architecture was increasingly subjected to the pressures of the market, these figures gave sermon-like public lectures that cast their work as a divinely informed task. They sought to elevate their profession beyond mere building or crass profit-seeking by portraying it as a force for moral and civic improvement.

Bryan E. Norwood tells the story of how a small group of architects built a profession amid the powerful forces of capitalism and religious faith in the antebellum United States. He explores how architects in rapidly growing coastal cities from Boston to New Orleans portrayed their role in the burgeoning-and later fracturing-republic, tracing the tension between the religiously informed historical vision of architecture that they preached in popular lectures and the market-based contractual approach to design work that they actually practiced. Norwood recasts professionalization as a web of daily practices rife with incoherence: not a clear-cut institutional form but a potent mixture of ambitions, ambivalences, and complaints.

Putting emotions and affects into conversation with the history of capitalism while considering the intersections of religion, race, and nationalism, Professing Architecture highlights the enduring contradictions between architecture's lofty aspirations and its material realities.

The operator-tested framework for leading AI transformation as a talent strategy

Most enterprise AI initiatives fail because organizations treat them as technology rollouts rather than talent management challenges. In Workforce Intelligence: The People-First Playbook for Leading Your Company Through AI Transformation, OneDigital co-founder Mike Sullivan and Chief Product Officer Vinay Gidwaney introduce an operating model that treats the workforce as a composed capacity of human judgment and machine capability, orchestrated together.

Built from the authors' experience scaling OneDigital to a $1.7 billion enterprise serving 100,000 employers, Workforce Intelligence traces the evolution from Personnel Management to Human Capital Management to the new discipline of WI. The book delivers real client situations, internal operating metrics, and a tested management philosophy forged under private-equity scrutiny.

Ultimately, you'll learn how to pass the "Humanity Test": When confronted with the option of reinvesting returns from AI in the people who built your business or pocketing the excess margins, you'll know the best option is the first one - and exactly how to execute it. You'll also find:

  • A historical arc showing why each workforce management transition required a new philosophy, not just new tools
  • Named scenes and real client situations illustrating how the Workforce Intelligence framework operates in practice
  • Guidance for CHROs on positioning people leadership, not technology teams, as the owner of AI transformation
  • A measurement framework designed to withstand board-level scrutiny when justifying AI-driven workforce investments
  • Practical direction for people managers who need to act on AI-related workforce changes starting Monday morning

Written for HR leaders, CHROs, benefits executives, CEOs, and people managers at mid-to-large employers, Workforce Intelligence provides the operational framework and management philosophy needed to lead AI transformation as a people strategy rather than a technology deployment.

Explores how Japan navigated its alliance with the United States in the aftermath of 9/11, balancing its pacifist constitution with evolving global security demands through newly revealed diplomatic documents and high-level policy analysis.

After Terrorism offers a groundbreaking analysis of how Japan navigated its alliance with the United States in the wake of the September 11 attacks, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and North Korea's nuclear ambitions. Drawing from newly declassified diplomatic documents, Ryuji Hattori challenges conventional narratives and introduces the concept of the global alliance security dilemma, illustrating how Japan struggled to balance its pacifist constitution with growing international security demands. Providing a rare, document-based perspective on the Bush-Koizumi era, Hattori offers insights into high-level negotiations, security policymaking, and the shifting geopolitical landscape of East Asia. Through a meticulous analysis of primary sources and interviews with key policymakers, he reveals how Japan's foreign policy was shaped by both alliance asymmetries and domestic constraints. Ideal for scholars of international relations, security studies, and Asian diplomacy, After Terrorism is an essential resource for understanding the long-term impact of post-9/11 security decisions on US-Japan relations and the broader Indo-Pacific order.

The open access version of this book has been made available thanks to the generosity of Ryuji Hattori.

This book offers insights into developing internal quality control, especially for educational settings which have yet to establish quality system infrastructures to match leading European models. It focuses on the interest in post-control economies which have a global reach, and provides a basis for discussion of the challenges faced by institutions and governments in emerging neo-liberal economies. This book also questions the relationship of quality and neo-liberal aspiration for education and the intrinsic issues this creates. It builds on the experience of the Azerbaijani higher education institutions and regulators and offers options in an empathetic way in which emerging post-Soviet countries can establish units of internal quality assurance. It equips professionals with concise, actionable insights, enabling them to implement a robust Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) system tailored to their institution's specific needs and objectives.

Between 1888 and 1914, U.S. geographical societies became central institutions mediating the production and circulation of geographic knowledge. Anchoring his analysis in the American Geographical Society, Maximilian Reimann moves beyond celebrated explorers to examine the knowledge infrastructures, networks, and everyday labor of editors, librarians, and councilors who defined modern geography. He traces how knowledge traveled from the field to libraries and archives, evolving into publications and lectures that had to balance academic credibility with popular appeal. Together, national and regional societies shaped geography into a respected discipline and a popular science entangled with American national ambitions and imperial visions.

Environmental social scientist Urooj Raja explores how to promote environmental action through the repurposing of six hegemonic forces - anthropocentrism, extractivism, capitalism, legal hegemony, technofixes, and imaginative hegemony - drawing upon and offering practical insights rooted in both everyday actions and contemporary resistance studies.

This book delves into the concept of adaptive resilience, through which climate and environmental actors (CEAs) resist or repurpose these hegemonic forces by leveraging a combination of firsthand experiences, knowledge, networks, and skills. Raja argues that CEAs lean on adaptive resilience to resist and sometimes repurpose hegemonic forces and tools, which, when left unchallenged, often impede attempts to combat environmental inaction and climate change by design.

The author addresses the complexity and contradictions of how CEAs have engaged in contemporary climate action in the face of oppression, cautioning against a reliance on "purity solutions." This book's analysis traverses the environmental action ecosystems, engaging in discussions on traditional modes of activism, such as environmental campaigns, but also touches on novel ways of doing and thinking about environmental activism and action, including how CEAs harness and leverage technology and their imagination to do more for the climate. In doing so, this book offers an updated mapping of some of the less-discussed components of 21st-century environmental and climate activism and how CEAs, despite the odds, deliver and act when it comes to environmental action.

In Fearless Philanthropy, Roberta Brandes Gratz tells the story of Edith Rosenwald Stern-rich, progressive, and Jewish-who arrived in New Orleans in 1921, the wife of successful cotton broker Edgar Bloom Stern. Edith encountered a city rife with racism and antisemitism, and run by a set of entrenched social rules that she was not about to abide by. Her father, Julius Rosenwald of Sears & Roebuck, one of the richest men in America, had begun transforming lives of Black Americans in the South through his efforts to promote Black education. Edith proceeded to follow in his footsteps, and with her willing partner Edgar helped revolutionize aspects of New Orleans still visible today.

In telling the story of the Sterns, Gratz spotlights the outsider category of Jews in New Orleans, the specific impacts of the Mardi Gras social structure upon them, and the Sterns' influence on education in the South. Edith founded two pioneering educational institutions, while Edgar led a biracial group in the founding of Dillard University and Flint-Goodridge Hospital to serve the Black community. In 1947, Edgar purchased New Orleans radio station WDSU for son Edgar Jr. to run, and a year later Edgar Jr. opened WDSU-TV, the sixth major television station in the South. WDSU editorials favoring school integration, together with Edith's financial support of the desegregation campaign of the local women's group Save Our Schools, had a great impact during a volatile time. Edgar's rebuilding of the St. Louis Hotel (now the Royal Orleans), begun in the late 1940s and continued throughout the next decade, helped initiate the revitalization of the deteriorating French Quarter. As if that weren't enough, the Sterns led the development of Pontchartrain Park, the first Black middle-class housing development in the United States backed by the FHA.

Gratz's passionate account of Edith and Edgar Stern, showing how they grappled with issues of Black rights, philanthropy, civil rights, education, historic preservation, and the arts in a political and social climate antagonistic to change, provides a fascinating chronicle of New Orleans during a period of pivotal development.

In the shifting landscapes of global drug governance, power asymmetries shape drug economies as well as policy discourses. Through counternarratives and regional case studies of the Americas, this edited volume investigates how prohibition, securitization, and regulation intertwine in the production of violence and inequality. Bridging fresh interdisciplinary studies and critical policy analysis, the contibutors provide conceptual and empirical insights toward more reflexive, context-sensitive, and emancipatory approaches to drug policies.

Aging is now the main cause of disease worldwide, including heart disease and stroke, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, lung disease, arthritis, and many more. But the causes of aging have remained one of the great unsolved mysteries in science-and the solution might hold the key to treating a vast number of maladies.

This book offers an accessible yet rigorous account of recent research that has begun to unlock the biology of aging. David Gems-a research scientist with decades of experience in this field-surveys the major ideas and discoveries, including a new synthesis of understanding that represents a revolutionary breakthrough. Rooted in evolutionary theory and genetics, this new model explains how aging works, why it is determined by genes, and the ways it causes late-life disease.

Besides discussing the scientific advances, Gems also considers their implications for how we perceive and live with aging, as well as the potential long-term consequences of this research. Written in an inviting, engaging style with literary, philosophical, and personal interludes, this book helps readers understand aging in terms of not only its underlying biology but also its deeper meaning. On Aging is at once an illuminating overview for general readers and an authoritative reference for students and practitioners in biology, medicine, and healthcare.

Amidst the vibrancy of college life, the unspoken shadow of trauma significantly influences student well-being and success. Trauma-Informed Practice in Higher Education is a profound exploration of trauma's intricate interplay with higher education. Beyond laying bare the deep-rooted intricacies of trauma, from its physiological underpinnings to its sociocultural implications, the book presents transformative strategies for fostering compassionate, culturally-aware student support services. It not only pioneers trauma-informed pedagogical methods but also delves into faculty training, advocating for a comprehensive educational approach grounded in safety and adaptability. The discourse culminates in a visionary examination of organizational leadership, emphasizing the ripple effects of trauma within institutions and the pressing need for resilience and stringent assessments. When everyone can make themselves heard, who cares to listen? How can we learn to pay attention without simply waiting for our turn to speak? What does it truly mean to be a good listener?

Miriam Rasch offers a philosophical and personal exploration of the ethics of listening, understanding it not as a passive act but as a relationship between the self and the world. This relationship is always mediated-by technologies such as algorithms and social media, by techniques like dialogue and attention, and by our bodies and surroundings.

Rasch investigates listening in different settings across four chapters. The first explores the effects of technology, the second examines dialogue and its pitfalls, the third considers questions of testimony and bearing witness to trauma and violence, and the fourth shifts focus to nonverbal sounds such as music and nature as a way to discover meaning.

Listening brings together philosophy of technology, ethics, and aesthetics with examples from film, literature, and art as well as reflections on listening as an everyday practice. This book recasts listening as an act of generosity-an active and open-ended process that unites giving and receiving.

How and why are key Indo-Pacific states adapting respective foreign and defence policies to secure submarine cable networks amid heightened Sino-US network-based competition? States are driven to control submarine cable networks as these infrastructures transmit information between continents and islands, traverse vulnerable maritime zones, and constrict data through limited chokepoints. China's Digital Silk Road has challenged Western submarine cable dominance, prompting a suite of countermeasures by Western states individually and in coalition. This Element posits a nodes-flows-production typology to illustrate how states are attempting to control connectivity nodes, secure transmission flows and dominate production. The analysis highlights how states are pursuing central network positions to mitigate vulnerability - but this structural competition risks enabling weaponisation. This microcosm of network-based competition reveals how the contest to control submarine cable infrastructure is defining contemporary great power rivalry and re-wiring the Indo-Pacific's arteries. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

This pioneering book delivers a foremost in-depth study of the protest against the Nigerian Police's Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) from the perspective of memory studies. Blending scholarly insight with personal experience, the author, both a researcher and a front-line participant in the protest, offers a rare, insider-informed perspective. The book interrogates how protesters constructed diverse memory practices and mobilized digital platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp to organize, document, and sustain resistance. Moving beyond the immediate trigger of the protest, the book uncovers dire conditions that ignited the protest: youth unemployment, poverty, entrenched public-sector corruption, and perennial police brutality. These interlocking challenges form what the author terms an implicit collective memory, the shared socio-economic trauma that formed the underlying catalyst of the EndSARS movement. Interdisciplinary, urgent, and deeply grounded in the lived realities of the Global Majority, this book offers an essential contribution to the study of activism, digital resistance, and collective memory.
