This edited volume explores the circulation of ideas and practices around workplace democracy throughout Europe, and beyond its borders, from the Second World War to the present day. Its chapters examine the role of different actors in disseminating ideas about workplace democracy, focusing on trade unions, academics, political and governmental actors, and international organisations. In doing so, the authors explore how the circulation of knowledge across countries shaped different actors' positions. For instance, how did trade unions and other actors' discourses take academic production into account, and vice versa? How and through which channels did ideas of workplace democracy circulate, including exchanges, study trips, conferences, symposiums, and publications? Which individuals and institutions played the most important role in the circulation of ideas? How did co-determination, self-management, or other 'models' influence discussions, proposals, and concrete measures of workplace democracy on both a European and international level? This book addresses the pitfalls and frustrations that budding historians might encounter, and acknowledges the challenges of doing history by stressing that historians craft their stories from movable parts. In contrast to scholars in most other fields, historians do not have a canon of theories or a toolbox of methods that may be applied like spanners; they can, in principle, study everything and use any remnant of the past as a source.

Three features distinguish this book from other introductions to history: 1. To counter the common expectation that history is all about excavating truthful information from sources, it places the chapter on how to pose relevant questions at the beginning and devotes more space to that than others; 2. To counter the common view that history is not a theoretical discipline and can rely on 'common sense', it devotes a whole chapter to theory; 3. To counter the common belief that research aims at consensual findings through 'unbiased' scrutiny, it is more argumentative than other guides to history and is open about the fact that the problem-led approach ('questions, not sources, first') is only one of the ways historians study the past.

They Fought Back traces the phases of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust, beginning with the cultural and spiritual resistance of Europe's ghettoized Jews and culminating in armed resistance in ghettos, forests, and death camps.

Confronted with the destruction of their previous lives, newly ghettoized Jews began reconstructing elements of the institutions that had once defined their communities: schools, orphanages, clinics, soup kitchens, libraries, orchestras, and even cabarets and theatres. Ghetto inhabitants transformed spaces of fear and sudden death into centres of intense activity, sustaining life and dignity while countering despair. This resistance was rooted in a determination to live. In its later phase of armed resistance, few fighters believed survival was possible. Many, shaped by the ethos of Jewish youth movements, focused instead on how to face death with purpose, seeking to inflict damage on their oppressors, save what lives they could, and preserve Jewish honour.

The stories presented in this work explore the psychological and communal consequences of confronting not only life-threatening danger but the certainty of death, examining how individuals and communities respond in extremis.
