Chapters cover ten core aspects of politics and political science which are discussed in relation to the climate challenge. Claes highlights how climate policy is centred around energy and the need to substitute the reliance on fossil fuels with non-emitting energy sources, but affirms that politics cannot itself accomplish this transition. The book argues that energy transition requires insight from many scientific disciplines, advances in engineering, technical inventions, and innovations and social adaption. Claes suggests the role of politics is vital, not only by reducing greenhouse gases by itself, but to make others do things that do so.
The Role of Politics in the Combat Against Climate Change is an essential guide for students and academics in politics and public policy, environmental governance and politics, international relations and climate change. It will also be of use to policymakers and industry professionals in these fields working to combat climate change.

This volume explores emerging patterns of migration from Central Asia to underrepresented destinations such as Australia, Japan, South Korea, Nordic countries, and Tuerkiye. It critically examines diverse dimensions of mobility-labor migration, student migration, return migration, gendered experiences, diaspora activism, digital media, and host country responses-through empirically grounded and theoretically rich chapters. Drawing on in-depth case studies and fieldwork, this volume contributes to global migration studies while offering unique insights into post-Soviet identity transformations and comparative integration experiences.
It also responds to pressing contemporary concerns, including Russian migration to Central Asia post-Ukraine invasion, migration governance during COVID-19, and gender advocacy through digital platforms in authoritarian contexts. The chapters bring together voices from early-career and senior scholars, combining interdisciplinary perspectives from sociology, international relations, political science, anthropology, and media studies.

Documenting the rise and disillusionment of El Salvador's postwar activists in the face of populist authoritarian politics.
The conclusion of El Salvador's long civil war, in 1992, was supposed to bring about equality and political freedom. Leftist insurgents laid down arms, and the government formally embraced liberal ideals. Yet today, El Salvador is ruled by an authoritarian president who came to power via unconstitutional means. What went wrong?
Anthropologist and journalist Ellen Moodie embedded with indignados-young middle-class protestors, demanding that the government live up to its liberal commitments-to better understand the course of political change since the civil war. Yet the "post-postwar" generation is only the latest demographic disappointed with liberalism in practice. Their revolutionary predecessors responded to a twentieth-century "racial liberalism" that saw descendants of colonists "civilizing" Indigenous people while dispossessing them of lands and mobilizing them for labor. Today, the failure to make good on the promises of postwar liberalism has inspired robust support for strongman Nayib Bukele. Moodie argues that El Salvador's case, though inflected by local concerns, is not unique. Rather, it is another stark demonstration of how liberalism's imaginary social contract gives rise to populist authoritarianism.

A broad and accessible history of religion in Texas, from prehistory to the present.
From sprawling megachurches to religious billboards and towering steel crosses, religion quite literally looms over Texas. Christian nationalism determines the state's politics and, every school day, more than five million Texas children pledge allegiance to "one state under God." But it wasn't always this way.
In this wide-ranging chronicle, Joseph Locke uncovers the breadth of Texas's religious history, from Indigenous painters of cosmological cave art and Spanish invaders who constructed missions, to irreligious Anglo colonists, freethinking frontiersmen, Tejano folk saints, evangelical culture warriors, and Muslim immigrants. Locke traces the state's religious transformations across the centuries, bringing them to life through his depiction of compelling figures, like enslaved preacher Anderson Edwards, fighting fundamentalist J. Frank Norris, and celebrated humanitarian Sister Norma Pimentel, and gripping moments, such as the murder of atheist newspaperman William Cowper Brann and the siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. Comprehensive, fast-paced, and highly readable, One State Under God reveals how the Lone Star State's spiritual path was blazed.

This book explores why Pentecostal Christianity has flourished in China more than nearly any other imported religious movement. Tracing its origins from the arrival of the first Pentecostal missionaries in 1907, this study shows how Pentecostal spirituality, particularly when experiential, emotional, and centered on the Holy Spirit, deeply resonated with Chinese cultural and religious traditions. This book argues that Pentecostalism succeeded in China because it both affirmed core values found in Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, and harmonized with elements of Chinese popular religion. Drawing on key texts like the Mengzi, Zhuangzi, and the Platform Sutra, it highlights meaningful points of overlap without suggesting direct equivalence. By embracing supernatural and Spirit-centered practices, Pentecostal missionaries unintentionally fostered a flexible spiritual model that allowed Chinese converts to reinterpret existing beliefs rather than abandon them. The result is a uniquely Chinese Pentecostalism that's rooted in local culture yet global in reach. This is an important read for religious studies scholars and scholas of sociology interested in Chinese religion.

Every member of the LGBTQ+ community has faced unique challenges when exploring their sexual identity, but for those in Southern African states, finding acceptance is often extremely difficult. Of the 61 United Nations member states that criminalize same-sex relations, more than half are African states. Influenced by different notions of culture, tradition and/or religion, the continued discrimination faced by the community has created an absence of research on Southern African narratives, until now.
Unveiling Identities bridges the gap between academic discourse and the lived experiences of the LGBTQ+ community, carefully researched and presented by scholars from across disciplines. The result is a startlingly honest account of the obstacles LGBTQ+ individuals must navigate in this specific geographic and cultural context. With chapters ranging from the legal landscape, the intersection of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the continued impact of activism and advocacy, editors Patsika, Naidoo, and Mutekwe curate a vivid exploration of the reasoning behind views of homosexuality amongst the African populous, driven by rigorous research.
This collective narrative is much needed in reducing the difference in focus on Southern Africa and the Global South more broadly in this space. The chapters offer a fresh perspective on the subject, but also a positive message of potential for the future. For those interested in African sexuality studies, Unveiling Identities is a title fuelled by enduring hope.

This volume delves into intersections of identities in complex societies, which reproduce and cross symbolic boundaries and form as well as challenge power relations. The volume offers both descriptive and analytical contributions with evidence-based suggestions of the ways forward in the messy reality of human superdiversity. It comprises studies from across four continents (Africa, Asia, Europe, South America), and ensures a global scope. The common theme across chapters is their concentration on broadly understood intercultural encounters, their features and implications for the engaged parties. Thus, the recurring themes discussed in the chapters are relations between minority and majority groups, including the issues of migration and indigenous cultures, the dynamics of integration processes, and their impact on the cultural identity of the participants of intercultural encounters. Several of the chapters present a linguistic perspective of intercultural communication, referring to post-conflict and postcolonial contexts, and focus on language policy and the related tensions between the development of linguistic diversity and social cohesion. The chapter authors provide qualitative methodological approaches against theoretical frameworks, looking at particular case studies, and refer to sociological and psychological aspects of interculturalism, sociolinguistics, and concepts relating to cultural identity.
This interdisciplinary volume is of interest to a wide readership, including those coming from cultural studies, cultural psychology, discourse studies, identity research, and sociolinguistics.

This third and final volume in Allan Millett's comprehensive history of the Korean War is a journey through the final years of the conflict and a deep examination of the Geneva Convention in 1954.
By July of 1951, the war on the Korean peninsula had been raging for a year and the capital of Seoul had changed hands four times. Armistice talks had begun. The stakes remained high, not just for the Koreans but for the Russians, Chinese, and Americans as well. The future of the Asia-Pacific world and the fight for the global order hung in the balance.
In this third and final volume in his celebrated history of the Korean War, eminent historian Allan Millett leads readers through the complicated and interconnected series of military operations and diplomatic events that occurred from the summer of 1951 through May 1954, the end of the Geneva Conference on Korea. Drawing extensively on newly available archival sources, Millett brings new voices to the history of the war, including Russian, Chinese, and North Korean perspectives and adds new insights to the conventional wisdom of the American and South Korean views of the war.
Proud of their long history of resistance to invaders, both Koreas asserted they sought self-determination. One year after the armistice, with foreign armies still on their soil and scant evidence of recovery, Syngman Rhee and Kim Il-sung had taken political paths they believed were the pre-conditions for rebuilding their Koreas for the conflict they saw in the years ahead.
For the two Koreas the war raised barriers to unification that have not yet been breached.

This book argues that the digital revolution constitutes an anthropological turning point in human history. It examines the rise of a new procedural humanity-Homo Externatus-born from a profound cultural shift between logos, the symbolic foundation of thought grounded in language, truth, causality, and meaning, and "arithmos", a procedural, a-semantic metaculture driven by calculation and correlation. Humanity is moving from a culture of differentiation, between true and false, good and evil, man and God, toward one of de-differentiation, where everything becomes calculable and thus comparable. Drawing on psychoanalysis, social theory, and geo-economic analysis, the book explores how digitalization, while seemingly unifying, actually fragments our "society of individuals"; and asks whether it might herald the advent of a new form of totalitarianism.
Scholars, researchers, and students in social sciences, digital studies, philosophy and psychoanalysis will find this book invaluable. It offers a unique blend of insights, combining social sciences with psychoanalysis to illuminate the new interplay between the psychic and the social in the digital age. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the transformative impact of digitalization on human psyche, thought and society.

A new history of Brazil told through the lens of the often-overlooked interior regions.
In colonial Brazil, observers frequently complained that Portuguese settlers appeared content to remain "clinging to the coastline, like crabs." From their perspective, the vast Brazilian interior seemed like an untapped expanse waiting to be explored and colonized. This divide between a thriving coastal area and a less-developed hinterland has become deeply ingrained in the nation's collective imagination, perpetuating the notion of the interior as a homogeneous, stagnant periphery awaiting the dynamic influence of coastal Brazil.
The Interior challenges these narratives and reexamines the history of Brazil using an "interior history" perspective. This approach aims to reverse the conventional conceptual and geographical boundaries often employed to study Brazilian history, and, by extension, Latin America as a whole. Through the work of twelve leading scholars, the volume highlights how the people and spaces within the interior have played a pivotal role in shaping national identities, politics, the economy, and culture. The Interior goes beyond the traditional boundaries of borderland and frontier history, expands on the current wave of scholarship on regionalism in Brazil, and, by asking new questions about space and nation, provides a fresh perspective on Brazil's history.

This book explains the context of disease, wellbeing and medical practices in Africa, and importantly, how these are influenced by religion (including African ways of belief), spirituality, and faith-based institutions, in relation to healthcare practices. By doing so the handbook explores both positive and negative roles of religion, spirituality, and faith-based institutions in individual and communal health. The book investigates how religion as a non-state agency drives the agenda for wellbeing, in the light of Africa having a disease burden of malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV, and sporadic pandemics such as Ebola and more recently, COVID-19. The book also takes a look at how African Indigenous Religions, Christianity, Islam, and other religions in Africa, continue to shape attitudes towards sexual and reproductive health and rights, particularly among adolescents, youth and women. It examines poverty as a major determinant of poor health in the continent, and how religion and religious institutions therefore play a crucial role in provision complementary and supplementary healthcare services. And ultimately shows how religion/faith-based institutions and health intersect, as well as how this intersection contributes to Africa's and global development agenda.

Inside the farming traditions that have supported food sovereignty and community resistance in past and present Tlaxcala
In this book, Keitlyn Alcantara draws on research from the state of Tlaxcala in Mexico to describe how its people resisted imperial domination and survived centuries of upheaval. Threatened by embargoes from the Aztec Empire and later colonial pressures, the Tlaxcalteca relied on the milpa-a maize-based agricultural system-and on the many wild plants within it that supported change and survival. Alcantara reveals the milpa as a living foodweb and philosophy of interconnection that sustained communities through terrace farming, household gardens, use of wild and domesticated fruit and nut trees, and the stewardship of rivers and wetlands.
An Archaeology of Milpa Cultures bridges past and present to show how ancient strategies of interdependence continue to nourish contemporary campesino food sovereignty movements in Tlaxcala, even amid industrial pollution and monocropped landscapes. Incorporating bioarchaeological dietary isotope studies, Indigenous worldviews, and ethnographic research, this book illuminates how food sovereignty became a cornerstone of community resistance. Alcantara demonstrates that the lessons of the milpa inspire new visions for climate resilience, inviting readers to imagine a future rooted in collaboration, diversity, and care for the land.

This book brings together past and present empirical materials to examine the connections between past politics of land and conservation and contemporary land and natural resource conservation struggles in the Mapungubwe region, contending that addressing South Africa's vexed present requires fuller reckoning with its past. Specifically, the study highlights how land and conservation are politicised and looks at power dynamics in nature conservation initiatives. It argues that the establishment of nature conservation projects is not only determined by scientific knowledge and passion about conservation and resource management, but by social and political processes at local, regional and national level.
This book will be an invaluable reference for conservationists, resource scientists, government officials, scholars or academics, students, policy makers, and stakeholders interested in conservation and natural resource management. It argues that passion and good intention alone are not sufficient inducements to the protection of nature, but involving local communities and those who are affected by protected areas can play a significant role in the success of conservation projects.

Aid effectiveness remains a global concern, especially given most developing countries' reliance on foreign aid for their development efforts. The aid effectiveness agenda, shaped by a series of international conferences, declarations, and high-level forums, notably the Paris Declaration, sought to transform global aid practices. This book offers a detailed examination of the global aid effectiveness agenda in the context of Bangladesh, one of the world's leading aid recipients. Drawing on significant in-depth interviews and a wide range of robust document analysis, it presents empirical evidence on how the global aid effectiveness agenda fails when implemented at the country level, particularly in developing economies such as Bangladesh. The findings of this volume contribute to the understanding of development cooperation in aid-dependent contexts and provide scholarly insights into devising actionable strategies to improve coordination and enhance aid effectiveness in recipient countries. It is intended for scholars and postgraduate students in economics, development studies, political science, public administration, social welfare, sociology, international relations, and area studies. It will also be intriguing to policymakers, practitioners, donor agency officials, and other stakeholders involved in aid administration and management.

In People in Motion, Sandra T. Barnes offers a history focused on the Benin Region's patchwork of small states and ports that saw a constant movement of people and goods for centuries. As such, this book widens the lens of scholarship, formerly limited to kings and elite merchants, to include people of all social levels who provided the dynamism behind the political rivalries and changes that marked the period. Barnes concentrates on protective relationships and the violence people were forced to endure during a fast-moving, tumultuous period of history, examining how they organized their lives and why this mattered. The result is a refreshingly original work that challenges long-held assumptions about West Africa's past, explaining what life was like for people on the coast during the transatlantic slave trade.

This book offers a concise yet comprehensive overview of how religion, secularization, and media intersect within Tuerkiye's unique sociocultural context. Moving beyond the classical secularization thesis, the volume adopts a more nuanced understanding that emphasizes transformation, negotiation, and hybridization.
Bringing together thirteen interdisciplinary chapters, the book examines a wide range of topics from the secularization of law and Islamist intellectual debates to Turkish cinema, television dramas, digital atheist activism, humor, artificial intelligence, and online mourning rituals. Each contribution highlights how media operate not only as a tool but as a value-laden cultural ground that shapes everyday beliefs, moral tensions, and identity negotiations.
By situating these discussions within Tuerkiye's distinctive path of modernization, the volume fills a significant gap in global secularization and media studies. It offers fresh conceptual insights and rich empirical analyses for scholars and readers interested in understanding the interaction between religion and modernity in contemporary societies.

Analyzing how Peruvian feminist art and activism subverts and reclaims the chola stereotype to confront colonial and patriarchal institutions.
Indigenous Andean women have long been derided in Peru, spurned by colonial and then national elites as depraved cholas. Olga Rodriguez-Ulloa shows how contemporary artists and activists not only reclaim this term of abuse but also mobilize the stereotype of the angry and perverted chola to confront the cruelties of patriarchy, capitalism, and white supremacy.
Sadistic Cholas examines music, visual arts, literature, and grassroots organizing by self-identified cholas-in particular, Black women and trans and queer feminists. Under colonial domination, cholas were destined for sexual coercion, labor extraction, and reproductive exploitation. While exhuming historical traces of chola resistance, Rodriguez-Ulloa argues that this condition of oppression persisted through the internal war of the 1980s, when Marxist women at the forefront of the armed campaign were condemned as hypersexual deviants. Inspired by their leftist forebears, today's artists experiment with an aesthetic of sadistic vengeance, configured as rightful self-defense. Yet, in spite of their violent imagery, activist cholas pursue nonviolent goals, promoting a commons of care incorporating people, animals, and the environment.

This book provides a compelling and timely exploration of passive design strategies in the coastal city of Bushehr, revealing how centuries-old architectural wisdom can inform today's urgent sustainability agenda. Set against the backdrop of escalating global warming and the high energy demand of HVAC systems, it demonstrates how vernacular solutions can significantly enhance building performance in hot-humid climates. Drawing from Bushehr's rich architectural heritage, the book showcases climate-responsive orientation, spatial organization, natural ventilation methods, and innovative shading systems that ensured thermal comfort long before mechanical cooling existed. Combining field observations, environmental measurements, and insights from traditional building owners, it illustrates how these proven techniques can be refined through modern engineering analysis and seamlessly integrated into contemporary construction. Written for architects, engineers, students, and urban planners, this book serves as both a vital documentation of cultural heritage and a practical roadmap for designing energy-efficient, climate-adaptive, and culturally grounded buildings in coastal and hot and humid regions worldwide.
