This book takes the complicated subject of contracting and explores it in depth, providing coaches and readers with insights into the psychology of containment and how to contract in a way that enables trust and accelerated growth, introducing a newly developed practitioner model named the 8Ps Platform.
Structured around the 8P Platform (Purpose, People, Professional, Philosophy, Process, Practicalities, Psychological, and Personal), the book breaks down the complexities of contracting while retaining the depth practitioners need across diverse settings. Each aspect of the model is illustrated through case studies and practitioner quotes, with additional guidance from the PROP scaffolding (Position, Reinforce, Outline, Personalise) that makes challenging conversations more accessible. Drawing on academic research and real-world practice, the author shows how effective contracting prevents ethical pitfalls, manages expectations, and creates the conditions for meaningful development work.
Offering an in-depth exploration of contracting for containment, this book is an essential reference for coaches, mentors, supervisors, and professionals in organisation and leadership development.

Paths of Symbolization explores philosophical and psychoanalytic questions about the concept of symbolization.
Alain Gibeault connects symbolization with concepts like playing, sublimation and creation. With reference to Freud's metapsychology and the French context specifically, Gibeault explores the significance of symbolization in analytic work. This book studies the theoretical questions raised by the concept of symbolization in the history of psychoanalytic thought and clarifies what is at stake when symbolization is impaired-particularly in the treatment of psychotic, borderline, and neurotic states. Through a wealth of clinical material, the author illustrates how symbolization mediates between inner and outer realities, enabling the emergence of thought, representation, and transformation. By comparing these cases, readers are invited to grasp the specific therapeutic contributions of French psychoanalysis in fostering psychic integration and the working through of unconscious conflict.
Paths of Symbolization will be of great interest to psychoanalysts in practice and in training, particularly those looking to better understand theoretical, clinical, and technical aspects of French psychoanalysis. It will also be relevant for academics and scholars of psychoanalytic studies, other areas of mental health and philosophy.

This book explores the narrative of education being in a state of perpetual crisis and the motivations behind the historical and contemporary tendency to exploit the same. Written as a call for greater media literacy, the book recognizes how and when "solutions" to the oft-acknowledged educational crises fail to address root causes, which ends up only maintaining the status quo.
The chapters of the book examine how the notion of education being in a perpetual state of crisis is often underpinned by a lack of funding, cherry-picking of data, ideological imperatives, the fashioning of public opinion as amorphous, or simple incompetence. Offering real-world solutions using international examples from Japan, India, Sweden, Russia, South Korea, and more, explained through robust philosophical conceptions, the author advocates for skepticism and epistemic humility as a key component in education. The book ultimately calls for people to reclaim the agency they have collectively surrendered in face of these crises and emphasizes on forging a new path that prioritizes forward-thinking movements.
This book will be of value to academics, postgraduates, and scholars of education interested in a solution-centric reorientation of the ongoing narrative and notions of education.

This accessible and engaging text introduces the reader to the history and development of counselling psychology before outlining its values, ways of working (therapeutically and when engaging with research), and other key areas.
It promotes the diverse ways that counselling psychologists engage with individuals and the wider communities in which they work and serve, and in doing so, emphasises the core philosophical thinking that commonly underpins the work of counselling psychologists in therapy, research, education, or other leadership roles. Through practical examples and reflexive questions, this book highlights the roots of the discipline in value-based ethics and humanistic thinking, then explores the important psychological theories informing counselling psychology practice. These include the core therapeutic theories underpinning psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, and humanistic therapies, and also contributions from intersectionality, social justice, and ecological systems approaches. Following a section on research methodology, this book goes on to look at the impact of counselling psychology across society and the avenues for further development.
It is core reading for students in counselling psychology as well as those training in therapeutic disciplines such as counselling or psychotherapy.

This book explores the single-session work done by Sigmund Freud and considers the implications of this work for the current theory and practice of single-session therapy (SST).
While contemporary interest in SST can be traced to Moshe Talmon's (1990) book, its origins go back to Freud. There are three cases in the literature where Freud can be said to practise SST, and this is the first book that examines these cases in one place and without getting caught up in the intricacies of Freudian theory. Windy Dryden first explores the three cases in which Freud conducted single-session work with patients. Particular attention is paid to the third patient, Margarethe Lutz, who discussed the session in an interview. This work is important because it is the only client-based view of Freud conducting therapy that lasted a single session. The book closely examines the work of Freud in these sessions and tracks how it impacts the development of SST.
This book will be of interest to any single-session practitioners, as well as those scholars and followers of Freud.

Neuropsychological Rorschach Assessment examines both the current literature addressing how the Rorschach can be applied as a method of neuropsychological assessment and case studies looking at the Rorschach performance of neuropsychologically impaired individuals.
This book is the first comprehensive resource to trace and integrate neuropsychological research with the Rorschach-from the early insights of Hermann Rorschach and Zygmunt Piotrowski to modern, evidence-based systems such as the Comprehensive System (CS) and the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS). It is unique in synthesizing findings on the Rorschach's correlations with cognitive functioning, its applications in assessing neurocognitive and neurodevelopmental disorders, and its emerging role in neuroimaging research. Clinical case studies demonstrate the Rorschach's application in early-onset Alzheimer's dementia, ADHD, personality disorders, traumatic brain injury (TBI), autism spectrum disorder, alcohol dependence, and psychotic depression.
Featuring invaluable practical guidelines and rich clinical cases, this book equips psychologists, neuropsychologists, and students to use the Rorschach from a neuropsychological perspective, expanding the scope of Rorschach and multimethod assessment.

In Using Psychoanalysis to Understand and Address AI Bias: Refractions in the Digital Mirror, Karyne E. Messina uses a psychoanalytic lens to explore the subconscious forces driving AI development.
This book provides a unique psychoanalytic framework for understanding how AI systems internalize and amplify the unconscious biases of their human creators. Through detailed case studies in clinical healthcare, predictive policing, and automated hiring, Messina introduces concepts such as projection, splitting and projective identification. She illustrates how these psychological mechanisms - originally developed to explain human behavior - are inadvertently built into the logic of AI, creating systems that replicate societal inequities on a massive scale.
Using Psychoanalysis to Understand and Address AI Bias will be of interest to all readers interested in how AI can benefit from psychoanalytic insight, including psychoanalysts in practice and in training, and academics and scholars of AI ethics and technology policy.

How disaster remade San Francisco's Chinatown-and revealed the limits of belonging in America.
San Francisco's Chinatown is the oldest Chinatown in North America and one of the largest Chinese enclaves outside Asia. Spanning 30 city blocks and home to tens of thousands of monolingual Chinese residents, its endurance is remarkable-especially given how close it came to erasure.
In this fascinating history, Dafeng Xu uncovers the contested history of this vibrant community, focusing on the transformative period surrounding the 1906 earthquake and fire that destroyed 80 percent of the city, including Chinatown. White San Franciscans saw the disaster as an opportunity to permanently displace the neighborhood. Instead, Chinatown was rebuilt-but not without conflict or consequence. Using detailed census data and other historical documents, Xu examines how this rebuilt Chinatown differed socially and physically from its earlier form-and the many ways it stayed the same. He explores whether the earthquake shifted patterns of segregation, if and how Chinese immigrants navigated pressure to assimilate-including adopting English, changing their names, and leaving ethnic neighborhoods-and whether they gained economic ground in the city's new landscape.
Xu's study reveals a striking contradiction: while Chinese Americans were often criticized for not assimilating, systemic barriers made that very process nearly impossible. The post-disaster Chinatown became a symbol of cultural resilience, shaped by both community agency and persistent exclusion. Rich in insight and original research, Chinatown offers a powerful look at how disaster, racism, and resistance shaped one of America's most storied immigrant neighborhoods.

Vital Ties depicts an emergent form of intimacy with the dead mediated by digital technologies. In southern Australia, a game developer crafts a virtual reality experience, reuniting his best friend with an avatar of his late father. In Northern California, a woman creates a smartphone app to log moments in which her deceased mother appears. In Chicago, a high school teacher visits her late brother's Facebook page, hypnotized by the shifting content that animates and reanimates him. As digital media offer ways to bring the dead to presence, the living and the dead are haunted in new ways, affecting relationships to both media and death. Lyrical and moving, Vital Ties offers a powerful rethinking of death, memory, and mediation in the digital age.

Fitting in and standing out in high school is an eternal rite of passage for youth. Increasingly, these struggles to establish and maintain hierarchies are labeled under the umbrella of "bullying." This form of conflict is considered such a significant problem that all fifty states have passed anti-bullying legislation, and many schools engage in prevention programs. Despite these efforts, bullying rates haven't decreased. Why is that? Today's teens face a unique challenge: social media.
In The Tolerance Generation, sociologist Sarah Miller explores how youth grapple with bullying in the digital age and the industry designed to prevent it. Based on two school years with students at a Northeastern high school, Miller calls "Township," the book chronicles how adolescents navigate conflict in an increasingly digital society, all while their educators promote tolerance. Charting teens' lives as they are affected not only by bullying, but also by sexting exposures, school shooting threats, and viral cancel culture, their stories illustrate the amplifying pressures social media places on youth and why bullying prevention efforts fail to help them. The school's anti-bullying campaigns are engineered to address individual instances of explicit conflict, but not to change the culture that contributes to and constitutes bullying, nor to help students who are most likely to be targeted. Miller captures school practices that fail to address bullying as a systemic problem, while she shows how students' online lives are inextricable from a culture of exclusion and harm.
However, by following teens on a variety of platforms, she also documents another realm, where adolescents develop their own bullying prevention strategies using the very tools adults blame for bullying. Here, youth harness digital culture to go beyond tolerance, using social media as a site for education, conflict resolution, and resistance. Ultimately, Miller establishes that to prevent bullying, schools must address the structural factors that marginalize students and offer tools for creating a true culture of care that supports youth both at school and online.

In this thought-provoking work, Yael Peri Herzovich and Aner Govrin challenge the long-standing rivalry between psychoanalysis and other psychotherapeutic approaches, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy. They address a fundamental question: How can we facilitate genuine dialogue between these dominant psychotherapy schools?
Drawing on philosophical concepts such as Derrida's notion of hospitality, Hegel's dialectics, and Gadamer's dialogical approach, the authors provide a new philosophical framework for encountering the "other" in psychotherapy integration. This book examines the barriers to integration and explores how hospitality, dialectics, and dialogue processes can facilitate openness between schools while preserving their unique identities. Through engaging historical analysis and practical demonstrations, the authors show how opposing approaches can enrich each other, leading to more effective treatment possibilities. Offering a fresh perspective on the potential for integration and mutual influence between these two major psychotherapy schools, while honouring the unique contributions of each school, this book is essential reading for psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, psychologists, and students of mental health.

Playing Politics in Digital Spaces offers a timely analysis of play and politics woven together to imagine and enact new worlds, democratic and reactionary alike.
Bringing together media and philosophical insights into the concepts of play, politics and worlding (or world-making), the book highlights the dual potential of play-politics for both oppression and liberation. Through theoretical and cultural-historical perspectives on the emergence and repercussions of a post-digital "radical uncertainty", the book allows readers to understand how play has become a crucial component of contemporary politics. It examines this through an array of diverse cases, from different places and scale.
This book will interest scholars and students from media studies, philosophy, cultural studies, games and play studies, and political theory and philosophy, and will be valuable for other stakeholders including policy-makers, politicians, journalists, game designers, activists and NGOs.

In Servants of God, Slaves of the Church, Lisa Kaaren Bailey uncovers the surprising intimacy between sacred devotion and coerced labor in early medieval Europe. From queens who scrubbed monastery floors to enslaved women forced into lifelong service, acts of humility and acts of subjugation often looked the same and were interpreted through the same religious lens. Drawing from sermons, letters, miracle stories, and hagiographies, Bailey shows how metaphors of service shaped not only elite piety but also the lived experience of those at the very bottom of the social order.
This is a story of lives that were often absent from the historical record: those who lit church lamps, laundered liturgical linens, and sustained Christian worship through their unseen labor. Bailey weaves together theology, cultural history, and feminist historiography to trace how Christian ideas about virtue, sin, and the will both justified unfreedom and offered tools to contest it. Her use of "critical fabulation" animates the archive without fictionalizing it, allowing glimpses of agency in places where it was rarely recorded.
By placing the metaphor of service alongside its social reality, Servants of God, Slaves of the Church reshapes how we think about labor, power, and religious meaning in the centuries after Rome. A deeply informed work of both historical scholarship and moral insight, this book gives voice to the voiceless and demands a reconsideration of what it meant to serve God.

This book highlights some of the crucial crossroads - moments in which choices as to the future relationship between humans and digital technologies have to be made - that societies face in light of the growing development and adoption of AI.
As contemporary societies undergo profound transformations driven by artificial intelligence and related technologies, a unilinear vision of inevitable 'progress' and development increasingly dominates public discourse. This book offers a counterpoint, challenging such deterministic narratives by mapping out the complex crossroads where futures ought to be shaped rather than passively received. Exploring a multiplicity of domains as diverse as education, heritage, creativity, the biological and technological boundaries of humans, work, war, and space colonialism, both the dominant (typically progressivist) and alternative (critical) ways of framing the present and the future are outlined, identifying choices to be made. The book teases out the underlying tendencies and underscores a recurring necessity to make value choices as to our further development, not only as societies but also as humanity, and in terms of regulatory choices. It reveals how decisions in these domains are shaped by ingrained intellectual, ideological, political, value-based, and economic assumptions, often hidden beneath the rhetoric of inevitability. These crossroads are not just technical or economic choices, but moral and societal: Between maximising efficiency and safeguarding plurality; between treating technological possibilities as imperatives and critically evaluating their desirability; between moral blindness and care. By illuminating the options available, the book invites readers to take an active role in choosing the future shape of societies and of humanity itself.
This interdisciplinary and creative text will benefit all graduate-level and scholarly readers working on AI within the fields of media and communication, cultural studies, sociology, and cultural anthropology.

Included in J.P. Morgan's Summer Reading List
Included in The Next Big Idea Club's June 2025 Must-Read Books
In his new book, AI trailblazer De Kai explores how widespread use of AI is bringing about an automation of thought, impacting our unconscious. He brings decades of his paradigm-shifting work at the nexus of AI and society to help audiences make sense of our interactions with AI at both personal and societal levels-ethically and responsibly.
What should each of us do as the responsible adults in the room? In Hollywood movies, AI destroys humanity. But under the influence of AI upon our minds, humanity may destroy humanity before AI even gets a chance.
Plainspoken and visionary, Raising AI guides us through our shifting attitudes and ideas in a world of AI cohabitants. Society can not only survive the AI revolution but flourish in a more humane, compassionate, and understanding world where we all play our part-alongside our artificial children.

In light of the two great phenomena that define the era of the Anthropocene, globalization and climate change, what does it mean to be a human subject or person in the world today? One response to these phenomena in the world has been some sort of return to nationalism (usually on the political right) or localism/bioregionalism (usually on the political left). A second response has been a continuation of the spread of neo-liberal capitalism without any apparent regard for the problems it is causing (on the political right) or with social and environmental protections tagged on (on the political left).
This volume provides what is needed: new and multiple stories and ideas about the many different ways of being human in the world, and what this might mean for the planetary future. The volume brings together 17 scholars (14 Indonesians and three Global North scholars) working from or deeply influenced by the Indonesian archipelago. Each contributor examines the interconnected themes of religion, decolonization, and the planetary from their distinctive disciplinary and geographic locations.
This volume is divided into four parts, each with four chapters that share a thematic focus. "Thinking about Decolonization and the Planetary" provides the philosophical and theoretical groundwork for decolonizing religion and planetary thinking from an Indonesian context. "Decolonizing Human-Nature Relations" presents case studies that demonstrate how some Indigenous Peoples and local communities live in subjective relationships with nature, opening up new possibilities for caring for and with the natural environment. "Decolonizing Religion, Nature, and Gender Studies" presents case studies of religious, gender, and ecological binaries that both disadvantage some groups and provide spaces for hybridity, resistance, and embodied practices of human-nature relations by women, LGBTQ+, and other minoritized communities. "Decolonizing Legal and Rights Frameworks for Indigenous Peoples" offers analyses of the top-down frameworks of law and human rights that perpetuate (post)colonial marginalization and erasure of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and they propose ways of decolonizing these frameworks to better respect and integrate lived religion for a better planetary future.
This cutting-edge volume will be of interest to those within religion and critical theories, religion and Southeast Asia, religion and ecology, and religion and nature. In addition, it would be a valuable read for anyone who studies the broader humanities within the context of Indonesia or environmental humanities.

Playing the Game uncovers the history of state and regional colleges as engines of opportunity in postwar America. By 1970, these institutions enrolled more students than elite private or flagship public universities did, and yet they remained on the margins of public attention and scholarly research. Marc A. VanOverbeke shows how these colleges fought for recognition by turning to an unlikely ally: college sports.
Drawing on extensive archival research, VanOverbeke reveals how athletics boosted institutional legitimacy and public support, while students harnessed sports to push for greater inclusion and racial justice. Black and Mexican American students, in particular, challenged segregation and discrimination on and off the field, making athletics a powerful site of protest and change.
Playing the Game reframes the role of college sports, showing how athletics helped shape not only school identity but also the national struggle for equality and educational opportunity.
