Reds, Revolutions, and Rebellions investigates how insurgent strategies from three revolutionary states - Mao's China, Guevara's Cuba, and Ho Chi Minh's Vietnam - shaped the tactics of armed movements across the Global South. The afterlife of twentieth-century communist guerilla warfare still echoes in contemporary warfare as armed Islamist groups, often seen as violently opposed to leftist principles, adopt the same military methods and tactics that Chinese leader Mao Zedong once espoused. Investigating the strategic thought of communist revolutionary movements in China, Cuba, and Vietnam, within the framework of the Global Cold War and the theoretical tensions that existed within and around the Third World Left, Benjamin R. Young exposes how these movements became the centers of revolutionary strategy and offered the most viable examples for decolonization.

To examine the historical trajectory and genealogy of communist insurgency strategy from the Chinese and Cuban revolutions to the present day, Young draws on declassified intelligence reports, memoirs, and security studies scholarship to follow the migration of insurgent ideas and reveal how armed groups have studied and repurposed leftist military doctrine. He traces the ways in which communist military theory traveled far beyond its original context, challenging the assumption that insurgency was always local or ideologically fixed.

In showing how leftist revolutionary war theory became a global language of resistance, Reds, Revolutions, and Rebellions reframes our understanding of both insurgency and counterinsurgency and provides a reason why, long after their revolutions, China, Cuba, and Vietnam still shape how rebels fight and how empires respond.

This book presents diverse perspectives on issues faced by the Chinese minority in predominantly Malay Muslim Brunei, drawing together cutting-edge research from early career, Brunei Chinese academics themselves to present a truly groundbreaking volume.

As a result of strict immigration rules and citizenship requirements following Brunei's independence in 1984, the population of ethnically Chinese residents in the country has declined consistently. Despite this, the Chinese community are significant in the region, playing a pivotal role through their sizeable socioeconomic contributions. Chapters shed light on a broad range of issues and challenges faced by the Chinese community in Brunei, from adaptation in wider society and struggles around ethnic identity and belonging, to loss of dialect, language, religious freedom, and the ongoing pressures around assimilation. Though the volume naturally focuses in depth on the Chinese experience in Brunei, the book relates the themes explored to broader international contexts where ethnic minorities are present, drawing parallels and reinforcing the global relevance of the book.

This book will be of interest to scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students in the fields of Southeast Asian culture and society, diaspora studies, and race and ethnic studies more broadly.

Sound Knowledge and the Liminal explores liminality as a key feature of life in the Anthropocene. Drawing on a 6-month research project conducted in Majro, Marshall Islands, it not only contextualises existing continental literature on liminality with a Pacific-centred perspective but also proposes that sound functions as a principal pathway for understanding wellbeing in one of Micronesia's most resilient and vibrant urban centres. Locating everyday life in Majro as constantly shifting between the qualities of continental city and coral atoll, the book traces how the local community uses sound to gain wellbeing in liminal spaces. Synthesising theories on Anthropocene islands, sound knowledge, vibratory labour and the auditory bubble, it highlights ludic appropriation and sonic cocoons as central to the affordances of an urbanised atoll space.

Providing a thought-provoking discussion of liminality outside of the context of continental cities, this book will be a vital reading for anyone for studying the relationships between Oceanic lives, sound and liminality. Especially relevant for scholars, it is also suitable for students and researchers in fields such as sound studies, cultural studies, political ecology and Pacific studies.

Critical Failures revisits the overlooked messiness at the heart of Japan's early experiments with modern criticism. In the Meiji era, young intellectuals posited that mastering the art of critical reading - called hihyo - was essential for Japan's advancement on the world stage. Yet, while they made concerted efforts to theorize hihyo and proposed ambitious ideals, their actual reading practice often fell short of what they set out to accomplish. Miyabi Goto argues that this gap between theory and practice - hihyo's failure - opened unexpected pathways for what critical reading could be.

Through vivid case studies of spirited debates about how to engage with literature, Goto traces the ways in which these early critics navigated new print spaces and forged discourses that were unruly, anarchic, and generative precisely when they failed to meet hihyo's ideals. Critical Failures combines close reading with intellectual and media history to recast failure as a fertile ground for rethinking critique itself. In so doing, this study offers today's readers an invitation to reflect on our own critical habits and the possibility of an unprescribed mode of reading.

This book explores the military and economic contributions of European reservists in Argentina and Argentine-born volunteers to the First World War. Drawing on primary sources in five languages, it explores all stages of the military mobilisation process-the recruitment and selection of reservists and volunteers, their transfer to the war theatre, training and assignment to units, diverse wartime and combat experiences, demobilisation, return to Argentina, and reintegration into civilian life. Additionally, it examines the economic mobilisation of these communities in support of the war effort, the variations in their responses to recruitment, and, in the aftermath of the war, the commemoration of their human and material contributions.

Part of the Wars and Battles of the World series, this book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of military history, migration studies, nationalism studies, global and transnational history, First World War studies, and Argentine and Latin American history.

Routledge Handbook of Contemporary Laos provides a comprehensive introduction to the Lao People's Democratic Republic's recent development and transformation.

The handbook showcases state-of-the-field interdisciplinary research across six themes: The Basics, The Populace, Political Economy, Resources, International and Challenges. Individual chapters provide specialist and non-specialist readers with a rigorous overview of 32 fundamental topics in Lao Studies, from 'The Party: Lao People's Revolutionary Party', 'Inter-Ethnic Relations' and 'Decision Making', to 'Land', 'Lao Foreign Policy' and 'Gender.' Marking the 50th anniversary of the country's landmark revolution of 1975, the handbook explores the contested achievements of socialist rule under the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP), examines the political, economic and environmental impact of the LPRP's resource intensive strategies for growth and development, and considers the benefits and challenges of Laos's evolving geo-political and geo-economic relations with China, Vietnam, Thailand and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). While focusing on contemporary Laos, the chapters are rooted in a clear understanding of how present-day issues have emerged from Laos's extraordinary history, spanning pre-colonial Buddhist kingdoms, French colonialism, royalist nationalism and socialist revolution.

Bringing together a purposely diverse collection of scholars, each an established or emerging authority in their own sub-field, the timely study takes stock of the country's development and considers what the next phase in the country's history might hold.

Lifetime Carbon Debt shows how individuals can help global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by addressing their own annual and lifetime emissions.

People around the world look to governments to provide leadership and action on climate change, and to industry and the wider business community to reduce emissions associated with their activities. However, individuals also have an important role to play by taking responsibility for their emissions. In this book Chris Anastasi offers guidance on how they can do this depending on their personal circumstances. He explains how individuals can estimate their annual and lifetime carbon debt and then explores the various options available to repay this debt, from changing their behaviour and embracing new technology, to using markets. Finally, the book highlights the significant contribution a community of like-minded individuals can make to our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Lifetime Carbon Debt will be of interest to those individuals who want to be better informed about their contribution to climate change and wish to take responsibility for their emissions. It is also an excellent resource for academics and students with an interest in climate change.

This volume contains contributions from over 60 authors from 20 countries exploring the importance of climate justice and equity in climate action. While focused on cultural heritage, its relevance extends into other fields including policy, just transitions, development studies, and climate adaptation. Its central message is that climate action and climate justice are inseparable in our response to the climate crisis.

Key cross-cutting themes explored in 25 contributions and ten information boxes include economic and non-economic loss and damage with a particular focus on intangible cultural heritage, the importance of plural ways of knowing and bridging different epistemologies, the intersectionality of risk, loss, and action with a particular focus on the historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism and other forms of historical injustice, and the importance of community- centred approaches to climate action including climate literacy and education.

This book is targeted widely to those both within and outside of the heritage sector. It addresses themes of importance to those working in heritage practice and research, policy development and climate adaption and mitigation. It will also be of relevance to those working with communities impacted by climate change.

This book explores relationships between humans and outer space through a geographical lens in the context of the Anthropocene. Presenting a bold and diverse engagement with outer space, the book expands geographical understandings of outer space and reflects upon humankind's place in the cosmos, all the while shedding light on the linkages between human life and cosmic processes.

Drawing upon literature from across the social sciences, the book offers an innovative interdisciplinary examination of outer space that is grounded in geographic thinking. By delving into a range of materialities and milieus, it unpacks how outer space is framed, encountered and perceived by a variety of social and cultural actors. A new materialist methodology, combined with a mixed-methods approach, is used to investigate meteorites, Dark Sky Parks and science fiction films, an effort that invokes deep pasts, embodied presents and speculative futures. In doing so, the book reveals the interrelatedness of human and cosmos, whilst unsettling the Anthropocene as a bounded and contained planetary condition.

The interdisciplinary nature of this book makes it appealing for anyone engaging with outer space and planetary thinking. This book will be of particular use to scholars and students in geography and the social studies of outer space, as well as those with an interest in the Anthropocene, new materialism and more-than-human studies.

Against the backdrop of China's rapid urbanisation over the past 30 years, this book examines social governance at the grassroots level, drawing on fieldwork conducted in a selection of representative Chinese megacities.

This unprecedented urban transformation has rendered traditional social governance models obsolete. This has pushed grassroots governance to evolve amid the tension between freedom and order, and between fragmentation and integration. Using an 'impact-response' analytical framework, the book explores how government organisations at the grassroots level in major cities have adapted their institutions, mechanisms, and strategies for social governance in response to urban changes and emerging problems. The book chronicles the reform of grassroots governance in megacities and examines structural changes from four major dimensions: reform pressure, institutional supply, operational logic, and governance transformation. It also highlights the roles of the governing party and government during this transformation. The book elucidates the mechanisms and logic underlying this transformation. The book also investigates strategic approaches to improving governance adaptability, while analysing reform challenges and potential future directions.

This work will serve as a valuable reference for scholars, policymakers, and students of public administration, political science, and sociology, particularly those interested in contemporary Chinese social governance.

There is a prevailing sense that commercial Superhero Comics cannot be serious objects of academic enquiry. It is the hallowed graphic novel, with its auteur/author, for which serious work is reserved.

This volume presents the work of three publishing houses who publish Superhero Comics in Delhi and Mumbai. It analyses their techniques of narration associated with the serial publication of commercial comics such as open-ended plots, frequent re-boots of the storyline, extended story arcs, and a complex narrative universe to throw into sharper relief the value of superhero comic books as distinct from the graphic novel. Through an exploration of commercial Superhero Comics, the authors wish to draw attention to a fluidity embedded in Superhero Comics, which is influenced by external pressures of distribution and production that are generally ignored in the desire to view a comic text as a discrete and disembodied whole. Superhero Comics then emerge as a post-modern vehicle to test serious socio-political issues in the mode of fantasy.

This ethnographic attempt to understand the contexts of production, circulation, and consumption of Superhero Comics will be of interest to comics scholars, students of popular culture, sociology, social anthropology, literature, and the arts.

Approaches to the impact of Wilsonianism have traditionally been developed from the fields of international relations, international law and the study of global self-determination movements.

This book offers a complementary and original perspective by examining the political influence of Wilsonian ideals in the broader crisis of liberalism following the First World War. While taking into account Wilson's role in inspiring self-determination movements, the book primarily analyses the political construction and appropriation of Wilson's image - as a reformist, pacifist, democratic and liberal leader - by liberal and socialist circles in Europe and Latin America. At the same time, it explores the rejection of Wilsonianism expressed by right-wing political forces and intellectuals, both during the war and in the aftermath of the Treaty of Versailles. Adopting a comparative and transnational approach, the study focuses on "peripheral" contexts that have received limited scholarly attention - such as Spain, Portugal and various countries in Latin America - while also incorporating two key cases, France and Italy, due to their close political and ideological connections with the former.

This book is a valuable resource for students and scholars in the fields of Global History and International Affairs, as well as all those interested in Latin American or Modern European History.

Necrosociety, Mortispolitics, and Miquiztli-politics challenges the underlying assumptions of necropolitics and biopolitics, exploring core concepts such as neoliberalism, neonationalism, and decoloniality, and proposing a new framework that expands our comprehension of these two domains.

The book opens by discussing the existing conceptual debates around how we can best conceptualize the political interplay of life and death. It then moves on to explore necrosociety, mortispolitics, and Miquiztli-politics, three concepts put forward as alternative concepts in approaching the politics of life and death. The book posits that the concepts of biopolitics and necropolitics ought to be oriented within the theoretical framework of postcolonial, anticolonial, and decolonial theories. This framing clarifies the ongoing global structural differences between countries operating within a global and internal colonialism context, allowing the reader to see another side of biopolitical and necropolitical issues. "Necrosociety" attempts to articulate dimensions that biopolitics and necropolitics have not yet addressed, exploring a sociological dimension where death has extended to the point that it goes hand in hand with capitalism, producing and multiplying the social and natural-world deaths. Second, "mortispolitics" is created as an alternative category that acknowledges death. Mortispolitics builds upon the notion of death as seen in necropolitics, but instead of focusing on the state of exception, it examines the state of the law. The book uses the North-South distinction because this concept applies only to North America, specifically the United States and Mexico. It articulates a new notion of death, one based on Amerindian peoples' ideas of sacrifice and cannibalism, arguing for a conception of death that extends beyond necropolitics.

Analyzing the interplay between life and death through a political lens, Necrosociety, Mortispolitics, and Miquiztli-politics will be of great interest to students and scholars of political philosophy, political theory, postcolonialism, and Latin American Studies.

Rightless Resistance investigates why resistance to land grabbing so often fails. The rapid expansion of oil palm plantations has triggered widespread conflict across rural Indonesia as communities lose their land with little compensation. Based on an unprecedented study of 150 such conflicts, this book uncovers how villagers fight back against palm oil companies, and what their struggles reveal about power, law, and citizenship in postcolonial Indonesia.

Enduring colonial legacies and collusive politics have left rural Indonesians virtually rightless, so villagers turn to customary traditions and social norms instead of formal law - a strategy that rarely gets results. By analyzing this resistance to corporate land grabbing, Ward Berenschot, Ahmad Dhiaulhaq, Afrizal, and Otto Hospes offer a new perspective on why land rights movements often fall short. When the legal system is unreliable, people aim lower - and the deeper power imbalances facilitating their dispossession go unchallenged.

Situated within feminist media and cultural studies, this book examines the everyday aesthetic labour of young middle-class Chinese women and their related social media practices. It also critically contextualises postfeminism within China's paradoxically neoliberal society.

Drawing upon in-depth interviews with young middle-class women in China's first-tier cities, the book offers a nuanced feminist understanding of young women's femininities, identities, and subjectivities in contemporary digital China. By analysing the self-making and self-fashioning practices of these women, it contributes critical perspectives to the popular yet contested concept of postfeminism within feminist scholarship. Readers will encounter vivid accounts of young Chinese women's everyday social media experiences, exploring how they navigate beauty cultures and negotiate shifting gender-class norms in urban Chinese society. Furthermore, this book provides valuable insights into the scholarly concept of postfeminism in the unique context of China, shedding light on transnational gendered cultures in today's social media age.

Tailored for scholars and students in gender and cultural studies, media studies, and China studies, the book proves especially beneficial for those interested in burgeoning feminist and gender-related research topics in the transnational context of digital China. It also appeals to a broader readership intrigued by digital culture, gender dynamics, and notions of beauty in contemporary Chinese society.

Savage explores the dark side of colonial modernity through canine eyes, showing the many ways that dogs involuntarily contributed to the modernization of twentieth-century Hong Kong. Catherine S. Chan follows the piecemeal transplantation of British animal humanitarianism as pedigree dogs accompanied hardening class differences, dogmeat became a contested racial issue, and dogs were roped into the long list of undesirables fabricated in the so-called golden era of reforms following the social disturbances of the 1960s.

Chan reveals a fragmented civilizing project that constructed dogs as dangerous, filthy, and unnecessary nuisances in a burgeoning city, rationalizing the slaughter of tens of thousands of dogs alongside paradoxical criticism of the native population for perpetrating animal cruelty and the promotion of British animal humanitarianism. Departing from anthropocentric perspectives in understanding the use of Britishness in the molding of modern cities, Savage restores the presence and agency of dogs to encourage a rethinking of the patchiness of British colonial governance and the long-lasting repercussions that modernity can have on our relationship with animals.

Across the early modern world (late 1400s to mid-1900s), oceans provided the key connection between far-flung communities in an age of empire and colonial expansion, while also serving as an increasingly important source of resources, from salted fish to whale oil to luxurious pearls.

This story has rarely been told from the perspective of the marine environment itself. This book brings together the newest research to explore an era of newfound importance for the global ocean, focusing on the changing human relationships with maritime environments as cultures around the world found new ways to use and manipulate different aspects of this environment. The book focuses on key themes in early modern maritime history: harvesting marine life, movement through and on water, changing coastal environments, sea-land connections, and the metaphysics of the ocean in an age of change. While making a case for the importance of early modern marine environmental history throughout all the oceans of the world, this book also provides a foundation for more work on the topic.

This book is for undergraduate and graduate students beginning work on premodern environmental, maritime, ocean and global history, as well as literary scholars or ocean scientists interested in ocean history.

A portrait of people fighting for truth and accountability as they confront the environmental injustice of "forever chemicals."

Invisible and nearly indestructible, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have seeped into the blood of almost every American and permeated the natural world. These insidious chemicals now drift on global air currents, fall in rain, accumulate in soils and food webs, and can persist in ecosystems for generations. Inescapable reveals how ordinary people are tackling the toxic impacts from this sprawling class of industrial compounds-long used in consumer products, building supplies, and firefighting foam and still widely produced.

Journalist Marina Schauffler recounts how PFAS contamination in Maine, a state known for its bountiful farms, woods, and waters, has upended lives and livelihoods, endangered public health, and cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. Stories from homeowners, firefighters, farmers, tribal members, researchers, and elected officials reveal the staggering implications of the federal government's failure to regulate synthetic chemicals that manufacturers have known for decades were toxic. Maine is among states at the forefront of PFAS testing and regulation, but no region is immune from this chemical threat.

The poignant accounts in this book illuminate the challenge of reckoning with the far-reaching effects of PFAS and addressing the ongoing burden borne by highly affected individuals. Countless communities across the nation and world could face similar struggles as the ubiquity of PFAS contamination becomes clear. Inescapable offers a roadmap for tackling this chemical Hydra.

This Handbook is the first multidisciplinary anthology of research on antiracism in global historical perspective. It demonstrates the importance of a historical lens for understanding the deep lineages of antiracism and reveals the myriad ways-transracial, transnational, and transhistorical-that antiracism has shaped world history.

Drawing on case studies from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, South America, and North America from the eighteenth century to the present, this volume situates antiracism across a variety of temporal, geographical, and ideological contexts that span the globe. By highlighting the perspectives of racially marginalized individuals and communities, it showcases the distinctiveness and importance of key thinkers, ideas, and methodologies in regional and national contexts. Further, by recovering complex histories, including memories and legacies, of antiracism, this Handbook illustrates how faultlines of race, class, and gender informed internal debates, priorities and outcomes. It emphasizes the creativity and labour of antiracist activism at the local and international levels.

The Routledge Handbook on Antiracism in Global Historical Perspective ultimately underscores the diverse genealogies of antiracism and its transnational networks of political solidarity in order to contribute to future research and teaching as well as political praxis in the present. A vital resource for students, teachers, and activists alike, it presents a synthesis of some of the best work on antiracism to date by leading scholars, both emerging and internationally recognized, across the humanities and social sciences.

This comprehensive handbook represents a definitive state-of-the-art overview of grasslands from multiple, interdisciplinary and global perspectives.

Despite the real and intrinsic values that grasslands offer, they are globally subject to fragmentation, habitat and species loss, and they are increasingly threatened by climate change. From a human societal perspective, grasslands are central to much of our culture and represent areas where agriculture first arose. The Routledge Handbook of Grasslands brings together an interdisciplinary team of global authors to present a much needed and vitally important overview of the new and ongoing debates around the values of and threats to grasslands. Reflecting the broad range of issues, debates and threats, this handbook is divided into five parts:

  • Part I: Deep Roots, Dynamic Futures: Understanding the Science of Grasslands
  • Part II: Living Complexity: Grassland Function, Biodiversity, and Renewal
  • Part III: Working Landscapes: Innovation and Tradition in Grassland Stewardship
  • Part IV: Social-Ecological Ties: Grassland Services, Justice, and Governance
  • Part V: Landscapes of Meaning: Cultural and Creative Perspectives on Grasslands

Drawing on the experience of researchers, practitioners and managers, this handbook is the only grassland-oriented text to include social, economic, policy and cultural value dimensions of grasslands, as well as an up-to-date coverage of the agronomy and ecology of these environments. This handbook concludes with a forward-thinking chapter that discusses the future of grasslands, further directions, threats and innovations.

The Routledge Handbook of Grasslands is essential reading for students and scholars of grassland ecology, management and conservation as well as policy and management practitioners involved in grassland management and governance, as well as natural resources more broadly.

This book examines China's educational transformation between 1895 and 1926. Based on three case studies, it explores the rise of a new field of education and reveals the intricate relationship between educational reforms, intellectual societies, and revolutionary movements.

Through meticulous historical analysis, the book chronicles the evolution of China's modern education system during a period of profound social and political change. Part I examines how new-style schools replaced the traditional imperial examination system in Hunan Province from 1895 to 1913, thereby transforming the educational landscape. Part II focuses on the influential reforms instituted at Peking University, which established a balance between academic, political, and moral orthodoxies to reshape China's intellectual sphere. Part III explores the crucial connection between secondary schools and the early communist revolutionary movement, demonstrating how educational institutions became incubators for revolutionary ideas and activities. By examining these interconnected developments, the book illuminates how educational reform became intertwined with broader currents of social transformation and revolutionary change in early 20th-century China.

This work will appeal to historians of modern China, as well as to scholars and students of Chinese studies interested in the intersection of educational history, historical sociology, and modern Chinese history and revolutionary movements.

Offering original insights into journalism's transformation in a politically complex, multilingual region, this book critically explores the rise of Chinese-speaking journalists transitioning to YouTube.

This book considers how professional journalists adapt their practices to YouTube while navigating diverse media environments, including mainland China's strict censorship, Hong Kong's shifting political landscape, and Taiwan's relative media freedom. Key questions guiding this research include how journalists-turned-YouTubers define and perform their roles on an informal, entertainment-led platform; how audiences perceive these roles; and whether creators maintain journalistic quality in a platformed media ecosystem. Through comparative case studies, including contrasting cases from the West, this book highlights the challenges of maintaining journalistic standards, the sustainability of content production, and the evolving journalist-audience relationship in the digital age.

Chinese Journalists Turned YouTubers contributes to research at the intersection of journalism, digital platforms, and public discourse in a fragmented and globalized media environment.

Focusing on a decade of controversy surrounding genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in China, this book provides a rigorous, mixed-method analysis of how risk discourses are constructed and disseminated on the social media platform Weibo.

This book uncovers the rich diversity of competing risk frames and reveals how digital platforms can democratize the negotiation of scientific uncertainty, yet also fragment public deliberation and discussion, leading to the reinforcement of new power dynamics and discursive inequalities. Breaking down the mechanisms behind the viral spread of GMO risk information, it examines how message features, contextual factors (e.g., source credibility), network structures, and social contagion processes shape what we believe and share. Ultimately, it will advance a deeper understanding of digital risk communication in increasingly platform-mediated societies.

It is an essential resource for science policymakers, risk communication professionals, and other stakeholders seeking to navigate the complexities of risk and uncertainty in the digital age.

Frontiers of Need argues that the Nigerian Civil War marked a turning point in US foreign policy, bringing humanitarian intervention into the center of debates about US engagement with the world. Emerging at a moment when Americans were already questioning the moral foundations of Cold War foreign policy, Biafra became a mirror reflecting a broader crisis of morality - a sense that the United States had lost its ethical bearings in the world. The mass starvation of Biafran children did not merely present a humanitarian catastrophe but, through a US-led humanitarian intervention, offered a chance to overcome moral paralysis and chart a different role for the United States abroad.

Drawing from governmental archives and organizational records across the United States, Britain, and Nigeria, Brian McNeil analyzes how domestic pressure for humanitarian action forced the Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon administrations to intervene in Biafra. Yet both administrations treated humanitarian intervention more as a domestic political problem than as a moral imperative, pursuing relief initiatives that managed American dissent without meaningfully addressing Biafran suffering. Through detailed examination of failed negotiations, bureaucratic conflicts, and competing sovereignty claims, Frontiers of Need reveals how efforts to wed humanitarian intervention with American power ultimately prolonged the conflict while failing to deliver the moral renewal Americans sought, establishing instead a troubling precedent for how humanitarian concern could become entangled with national interest in contemporary international politics.

This book brings the latest research and evolving historiographical developments on the Hispanic Atlantic world to a student audience. It highlights how the histories of diverse groups of individuals under Spanish rule were integral to Atlantic developments and dynamics.

The Hispanic Atlantic was a profoundly interconnected and dynamic region whose history is central to understanding the broader Atlantic and the early modern world. Traditional histories of the Atlantic often marginalize the Hispanic sphere, while those focusing on Colonial Latin America can downplay the region's connections to, and interactions with, the wider world. Examining the region's past from a broad range of perspectives provides deeper appreciation of its complexity. Topics covered range from imperial governance to Catholic practices and institutions; the importance of contraband and smuggling; the impact of Atlantic dynamics on Indigenous people and children; the challenges of studying the African diaspora; the ambivalence and contradictions inherent in hybrid cultures; the importance of transoceanic circulation of knowledge and plants; and new approaches to the collapse of Spain's Atlantic empire and the abolition of slavery in the Spanish Caribbean.

This engaging volume will be an exciting addition to advanced undergraduate courses on Atlantic, Global, or Latin American History.

Textual Forces examines how political texts were forces of war, state-building, and inner- and inter-regime communication in early medieval China. Meow Hui Goh shows that these texts acted as vectors: pushing and pulling, stirring and moving, conjuring sensory and emotional affective states that animated individuals and the world around them. Covering prose from different regimes and states, from the battleground and the court, Goh traces the symbiotic relationship among the textual, bodily, and political aspects of Chinese life in the late Han through Three Kingdoms period.

Interweaving literary, historical, and linguistic analysis, Goh offers a new framework for understanding the significance of the political prose of early medieval China. Goh complicates our understanding of textual authority in this era, shifting to a concept of textual forces that shows how these prose works exerted physical and emotive forces to arouse a wide range of reactions beyond political obedience. Textual Forces invites an imagination of premodern China infused as much by the senses, feelings and emotions effected through text as it was by the symbolic power of text.
