Everyone faces pressure. Pressure can come from your boss to work late, from your friends to go partying, from your government to join the military, and from a mugger demanding your wallet or your life. The pressure can be from individuals, groups, and even society as a whole, as when millions of people spread stigma against those remaining unmarried, pressuring singles to marry, or when millions of voters support candidates rounding up migrants, pressuring these migrants to repatriate home. This is a book about when pressure--whether implicit or explicit, from individuals or groups--leads to invalid consent. Invalid consent occurs when someone's consent fails to dissolve another person's duty. For example, if a mugger holds you up at gunpoint and demands your money, and so you consent to hand it over, the mugger maintains a duty to not take your money, such that your consent is invalid. Yet, sometimes pressure--even quite explicit and deadly pressure--is perfectly compatible with valid consent. For example, if a refugee is held up gunpoint by a soldier demanding that he leave the country, and he consents to an aid worker smuggling him to safety, his consent to the aid worker seems valid: he makes it the case that the aid worker rescuing him violates no duty in carrying him across the border. The question, then, is why sometimes consent is valid despite extreme pressure, and other times it is not. To answer this question, we must pull apart different types of pressure, different duties people owe each other, and different rights people have when giving consent to others.

From the author of The Genius of the System, the classic tale of Hollywood's first golden age, comes the story of its last.

Thomas Schatz returns us to an era when a newly enriched movie industry rediscovered its creative energy, and indie went mainstream without losing its edge.

Between 1989 and 2004, all the old studios either merged with other media giants or were swallowed up by even bigger diversified behemoths, leading to an infusion of money and fast-tracking the digital revolution. Yet even as CGI and piles of cash fueled a new breed of blockbusters-Batman and Titanic, Toy Story and The Lord of the Rings-an indie ethos permeated the industry. And at the crossroads of commodification and aesthetic vision, auteurs ranging from Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino to Sofia Coppola and Ang Lee became household names.

Power Surge traces these trajectories, which increasingly clashed and commingled during the 1990s and early 2000s, resulting in nothing short of a new golden age-and perhaps the last gasp of the century-old studio system.

New York City's downtown scene of the 1970s and 1980s is synonymous with underground film, video, and performance art. Many of the artists who would come to define this period also dabbled in the then-new technology of public access cable television, as host, producer, guest, or studio audience member. Drawing on archival research and personal interviews, this book-the first full-length study of this vibrant body of work-explores how poets, painters, and filmmakers produced talk shows and soap operas that warped the heteronormative conventions of primetime fare. Working outside the established art world, artists screened their shows in lofts and nightclubs, airing them live on Manhattan Cable and provoking frequent tabloid censure. Underground Networks affirms the importance of cable television to the downtown art scene and recovers an essential strand of avant-garde screen culture and a user-driven media ecology with uncanny contemporary resonance.

This book brings together some of the most distinguished and influential scholars in philosophy and sociology to explore the continued relevance of Herbert Marcuse's critical theory in the twenty-first century. As one of the most influential thinkers of the Frankfurt School, Marcuse's work remains indispensable for understanding contemporary social, political, and economic struggles. The essays in this collection offer fresh perspectives on his thought, demonstrating its enduring importance in addressing authoritarianism, alienation, counterrevolution, and the radical possibilities of freedom and liberation. The contributors examine Marcuse's insights on psychoanalysis and aesthetics, elucidating his vision of freedom as an inherently political project that resists depoliticization and individualistic retreat, and argue that Marcuse's work provides essential tools for understanding the ideological roots of authoritarian politics and the resurgence of reactionary forces in the contemporary world. By bridging past and present, theory and praxis, this collection reaffirms Herbert Marcuse's enduring relevance and the necessity of critical theory for imagining and enacting a more just and emancipatory future. It will be of interest to academics, graduate students, and advanced undergraduate students in the humanities and social sciences, especially Critical Theory, political philosophy, sociology, cultural studies, and modern intellectual history.

"This book doesn't just fill gaps in film history; it demands that we confront why those gaps existed in the first place. A fascinating read for lovers of film."-Ava DuVernay?

The rediscovery of the first film to depict African American affection revises the history of American cinema.

In 1898, vaudeville actors Saint Suttle and Gertie Brown joyously embraced in a short silent film titled Something Good-Negro Kiss. The first known film to portray African American affection, it was lost for over a century until its rediscovery inspired contemporary audiences with a powerful and enduring depiction of Black love. More than a missing piece in an untold history of Black cinematic performance, Something Good-and the magnetism of Suttle and Brown-attests to the power of Black performance on stage and screen from the nineteenth century to today.

In Acts of Love, Allyson Nadia Field tells the story of Something Good and recovers the forgotten yet fascinating lives of its performers and their world. Drawing a vivid picture from sparse historical records, Acts of Love examines popular culture's negotiation of blackness to reconsider the intersections of minstrelsy, vaudeville, and cinema in ragtime America. This book not only presents the story of Something Good, its performers, and the drama of its rediscovery; it shows how the rediscovery of this short early film changes our understanding of American film history.

From The New York Times-bestselling and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hemingses of Monticello, a groundbreaking collection of Thomas Jefferson's writings on race that every American should read

Among America's Founding Fathers, none was more deeply, personally, or controversially entangled with race and slavery than Thomas Jefferson. The man whose Declaration of Independence proclaimed that "all men are created equal" enslaved more than 600 people of African descent even as he acknowledged the injustice of slavery, saw himself as its opponent, and condemned it in his writings. How is this possible? In Jefferson on Race, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Annette Gordon-Reed gathers Jefferson's most revealing writings about African Americans, slavery, and Native Americans, enabling readers as never before to directly explore his complex and contradictory thoughts, feelings, and decisions on these subjects-the most hotly debated aspect of his legacy.

These selections come from Jefferson's public and private writings, letters, and plantation records, as well as accounts by contemporaries, including his son Madison Hemings and three other people formerly enslaved at Monticello. The book documents Jefferson's ideas about-and self-image in relation to-African Americans, slavery, and Native Americans, as well as his conduct, including interactions with individual Black and Native people. The writings show how Jefferson responded to living in a multiracial slave society while professing progressive ideals, and how his views on race and slavery were shaped by his experiences with enslaved Black people.

Jefferson on Race is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand Jefferson's conflicted attitudes-and the impact of race and slavery on American history.

This book explores how spontaneous volunteers disrupt the politics and practices of managing the movement of life seekers. Drawing on rich empirical material from the 2015 Greek refugee crisis, it reveals how these unaffiliated actors challenge humanitarian systems shaped by neoliberal logic and border violence.

Through a multimethod approach-including autoethnography, interviews, and participatory observation-the book traces how spontaneous volunteers expose the failures of international organisations and states to uphold human rights. It shows how their presence unsettles dominant narratives, disrupts illiberal governance, and surfaces the emotional and moral cost of crisis response.

Chapters examine the criminalisation of aid, the commodification of humanitarian values, and the psychosocial toll on those who step in where institutions fall short. Situated in Critical Development Studies, this book offers interdisciplinary insights relevant to scholars, practitioners, and policymakers working on solidarity, humanitarianism, security, and global governance.

This volume takes up intersectionality and whiteness as perspectives through which to engage and understand leadership. The chapters draw from research and theory, as well as the authors' own personal backgrounds and experiences to illustrate the complexity of leadership as a concept and the nuances of the development of leaders' own individual leadership identities and perspectives. Presenting theoretically and empirically informed conversations that engage both scholarship and real-life issues in the sphere of leadership, authors address important issues for advancing research and practice in international contexts, including Australia, Botswana, Canada, South Africa, Pakistan, Netherlands, UK, and USA. Chapters evaluate the dominant models, conceptions, and perspectives of leadership as part of advocating alternative models of leadership which acknowledge the multiplicity of permutations of diversity of genders and ethnicities across the world. By so doing, authors consider how their work might lead to social change. It will be of interest to researchers, educators, and students in Gender Studies, Business, and Management, as well as community and corporate leaders.

This book examines the potential of audiovisual accounts of the past as a form of history making and dismisses the view of academic historians that history films are of no value. While this may be true of most, whether Hollywood features or television documentaries, this is not invariably so. As evidence, the book examines a mix of recent costume dramas and presenter-led documentaries dealing with episodes in the history of Britain, France and the United States between the American Revolution and the First World War. For the most part, the authors accept that the documentary is structurally the better of the two genres as a reliable vehicle for introducing past events in our modern audiovisual age. But they emphasize that the greatest potential lies in a hybrid genre which is a costume drama, but one where the filmmaker uses documentary techniques to balance confirmations of truth with dramatic narrative.

This book examines how gendered life stories act as interventions that unsettle the boundaries between private experience and public life. From the testimonies of women whose accounts of gender violence have forced a reckoning with institutional silence, to the kiss-gate scandal in women's football that reframed debates on consent and national identity, to Shakira's widely circulated song about her public breakup, where questions of female authorship unfolded within the tightly managed economies of global pop celebrity, these stories reveal the shifting conditions under which lived experience acquires political force.

Set against Spain's volatile political landscape-marked by feminist mobilisation, reactionary backlash, and struggles over the meaning of public testimony-this book offers a framework for understanding how personal narratives travel, gather force, and become sites where political and cultural boundaries are redrawn. It speaks to readers concerned with the mediated life of testimony and the historical conditions under which private lives come to matter publicly, in Spain and beyond.

Presenting a panoramic, world-ranging view of history, this Guide identifies theatre's most important moments of widespread change from 50,000 BCE to modernity, across Eurasia, Africa, the Americas, and Australasia. It explains why those moments came about and examines how they found expression in distinctive theatre practices. Its global perspective complements more localized perspectives and foregrounds the importance of sometimes trivialized and overlooked traditions. The Guide provides students, scholars, and all who are interested in theatre with a fresh, lively, and compelling understanding of world theatre history.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the Poznan School of Archaeology, an original mode of archaeological thought that emerged in Poznan in the 1960s and 1970s. The book examines the significance of this original Polish archaeological thought in its broad academic context and places it in the realm of the social and intellectual framework of Europe. It is directed to the worldwide community of researchers interested in understanding the nature of the studies of the past and places this original and well-developed school of archaeological thought in its broad geographical and chronological perspective.

The Poznan School of Archaeology made explicit efforts to break off ties with the culture-history paradigm and rejected the simplified functional and rigid deductive-nomological explanations. Developed in the context of non-Marxist historical materialism, over decades it transformed itself into a distinct and multifaceted archaeological research school embedded in the tradition of cultural studies, philosophy, history, and the natural sciences. The book is suitable for undergraduate and graduate programmes in archaeology and archaeological theory.

This book examines the enduring legacies of slavery, colonialism, and apartheid, arguing that these are not merely historical events but ongoing injustices shaping systemic racism today. Through a six-fold framework, the book explores the links between the past and present (the residuality objective), the possibility of future injustices (the probability objective), and the necessity of rectificatory justice. The book also proposes pathways for addressing these legacies (the way-forward objective) while encouraging Black and African communities to focus on empowerment and resilience beyond demands for rectification (the beyond rectification and realistic resolution objectives). With a critical eye on the ongoing impacts of slavery, colonialism, and apartheid, the author challenges the notion that these injustices are mere historical relics. Instead, this book demonstrates how their residues are embedded in the systemic racism that persists today. It calls for a reckoning with the past to dismantle the structures of racism in the present.

This book addresses a crucial and timely question: who will evaluate the ethical practices of increasingly intelligent AI systems, and what qualifications will they need to ensure those ethics are applied responsibly? As AI systems become more capable of fostering trust in human-machine interactions, developers and data scientists are becoming more aware of the importance of programming ethical and non-discriminatory algorithms. Simultaneously, laws may soon require companies to continuously assess the social and ethical impacts of their AI products. But who will oversee these evaluations, and how can we prevent ethics from being distorted or misused? Rather than focusing on how ethical principles should be applied to AI, this book takes a unique approach by exploring the role of the 'ethics officer'-the individual responsible for ensuring an AI system's ethical compliance. With AI regulation gaining momentum across the globe, ethics is becoming a critical component of international technology leadership, and this book provides insight into these critical questions, exploring how the role of the ethics officer might evolve as AI becomes more pervasive and regulated, and what it will take to ensure that AI serves society ethically and responsibly.

The relationship between migration and media has become an essential topic of study due to its ethical and civil responsibility implications, particularly in today's digitalized global environment. The media's narrative on world and regional politics, local and global economy, religion, war, and civil conflicts affects the experience of migration and diaspora. In response, artistic representations and cultural interventions have become forms of activism, resistance, and confrontation against the narrative of power. Likewise, the digital space began to be used more intensely as a place of activism for migrants and civil society interested in their human rights. For instance, digital archives such as Humanizing Deportation and social media are used to do activism, the first one through digital storytelling, where migrants can express their deportation stories on video, and the second one uses digital circulation to create community and as a call for action. Artistic- Technological interventions such as Playas de Tijuana Mural (2019) use art and technology to protest the politics of migration by portraying family separation. Theater intermedial performances use virtual spaces to represent distance and the resistance to it. Cinema shows the social and political implications of their visual narrative. Finally, new practices, concepts, and models in AI, journalism, and internet freedom have created a rhetoric that could benefit migrants. Migration is usually seen through numbers, statistics, graphics, and quantitative data, which dehumanizes migrants. With this book, we aim to contribute to the knowledge of the phenomena through the lenses of a more humanistic approach to activism in digital media in the Hispanic world. We propose chapters that explore the activism of migrants and civil society committed to them from a critical perspective. This book, intended to be read by students, researchers, and the public interested in migration, presents interdisciplinary approaches to activist narratives, art, and digital. It explores diverse types of migrations and related phenomena, such as deportation, "voluntary" return, caravans, the Cuban diaspora, US childhood arrivals, and the particularities of the Southern U.S. border. These topics are analyzed in essays on race, politics, theater, film, music, painting, journalism, multimedia, digital archives, social media, storytelling, and artificial intelligence. In the abstracts, you will find diverse perspectives on how digital media act as platforms that allow horizontal activism, which is a direct response at the same level as the rhetoric of power. Likewise, the proposed essays enable us to reflect on the role of arts and media in favoring the expression of the migrant community and those who share a common feeling. Still, in the same way, we will see how digital media, if misused, can also harm vulnerable communities. Work by newer and established migration studies, digital culture scholars, and scholars from both sides of the US-Mexico border and other latitudes is incorporated, providing a comprehensive overview of the intersection between migration, media, and arts in Latin America. The book will consist of an Introduction and 13 chapters divided into three sections: 1. Media and Digital Media Artists?Activism; 2. Migrant Activists Online; and 3) Activism through New Constructive Practices. Editors: Rubria Rocha de Luna, Postdoctoral Researcher, Tecnologico de Monterrey Jacob Banuelos Capistran, Professor, Tecnologico de Monterrey

This book presents a comprehensive scientific reconstruction of human evolution, offering an original and integrative explanation for the emergence of the traits that define our species. It explores the evolutionary roots of a remarkable range of human characteristics-from our hairless skin, nuanced facial expressions, and emotional vocalizations to male and female sexuality, language, creativity, consciousness, social norms, laughter, and sense of humor.

Rather than focusing on details of stone technologies and skull shapes, this theoretical study employs a rigorous evolutionary framework, grounded in explicitly stated principles, a coherent conceptual apparatus of psychological and social concepts, and a systematic methodology for evaluating evidence. Drawing on the extended evolutionary synthesis-including cultural drive, multilevel selection, and niche construction-the author weaves together insights from paleoscience, biology, psychology, and anthropology to trace the key forces and transitions that shaped our species.

The book introduces and synthesizes key concepts such as challenge-response dynamics, concerns-and-structures coevolution, trial-and-fixation mechanisms, self-domestication, operant conditioning, normativity, and internalization. It reconstructs the pivotal evolutionary phases of human development-from the "African springboard" to the transformative Upper Paleolithic revolution-highlighting how daily survival concerns, child-rearing, intergroup competition and alliance formation catalyzed evolutionary change.

Special attention is given to the role of group and sexual selection, the development of symbolic communication and social regulation, and the fixation of traits through genetic mechanisms. The book sheds light on often overlooked evolutionary phenomena, including the emergence of adolescence, life cycle formation, female mobility across groups, the difference between male and female eroticism, and the institutionalization of property and mating norms.

A concluding philosophical chapter portrays human nature as a paradoxical blend of the endless openness and deeply embedded ancestral legacies. The author offers speculative reflections on how the evolutionary past continues to shape contemporary challenges-religiosity, sexuality, ethnic conflict, organized violence, and even our capacity for laughter and humor.

Mixed Media investigates Black and white artists' efforts toward racial integration, from the infamous 1931 Scottsboro Boys trial until Brown v. Board's 1954 desegregation of public schools. Each chapter attends to a distinctive visual ecology fostered by institutions and individuals committed to desegregation to varying degrees, including the nationwide public art initiatives of the New Deal, the imagery and cultural programs of the multiracial Popular Front, graphics produced for CIO-member labor unions, Jacob Lawrence's war paintings and other visual propaganda of the armed forces, and the struggle of New York abstract painters of African descent to navigate the criticism, museums, and markets of the mainstream art world. Together, they explore the divergent approaches to conceptualizing and implementing racial integration along the liberal-radical axis.

This book provides a framework with which to critically hear multimedia. In the digital age, where streaming and social media are the consumable medias of choice, sound is an undeniably important part of modern multimedia. Over the last 30 years, film and television have undergone major technological transformations, not the least of which is the shift from analog to digital means of reproduction. This shift was not done in a vacuum, but part of global shift in the political landscape. Amassing technological advances in tandem with the growing rift between the working and ruling class launched us deep into late capitalism. This book uses the lens of late capitalism from 1990-2020 to contextualize sonic power dynamics present throughout mass multimedia in the United States. The book examines animated serials featuring women antagonists and their soundscapes as a means of deconstructing the oppressive sonic structures present in their respective multimedia(s). The book utilizes a phenomenological approach to view these power dynamics, using the Sonic Gaze as a framework to view and recognize oppressive sound structures against women, femmes, and non-binary confirming folx. By listening to portrayals of these women of power, the book hears them from a slant, allowing for an examination of power.

This book juxtaposes two realities of our world. On the one hand, the extensity, intensity and velocity of the current form of globalization amplified the role of globalization in the migrations and movements of people, and consequently amplified the centrality of the migrations and movements of people in our contemporary world. On the other hand, in spite of globalization: (i) migration is a problematic phenomenon, and (ii) Africans remain 'outsiders' in Europe, and Africans from some African states remain 'outsiders' in other African states. Understanding (i) and (ii) is crucial to understanding the current plight of African migrants. Taking his cue from Alexander Wendt's (1992) social constructivist argument that 'anarchy is what states make of it', Frank Abumere shows how and why the problem of identity, rather than the problem of securitization, is the fundamental problem when dealing with the problem of migration.

This book explores contemporary cultural narratives across film, television, and literature to illuminate the way male mental illness is positioned. It argues that fundamentally, the male experience is shaped differently due to the impact of gender expectations. Alongside this, narratives containing suicide also often fail to address the experiential, focusing on the why instead. This results in a limited approach that upholds hegemonic ideals, and with it, a need to rationalize or explain mental health and suicide, rather than engage with it more empathetically.

This book integrates research from behavioral and social sciences to advance the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with Black Americans who have experienced structural racism. As the US grows more racially diverse, clinicians and graduate schools are in need of clinical resources to guide their culturally responsive practice with Black Americans.

Among the contents covered are:

  • The historical context of CBT and structural racism (Part I: Chapters 1 - 2);
  • Theoretical and empirically-based principles and practice for optimizing CBT with Black Americans (Part II: Chapters 3 - 7); and
  • The application of CBT to specific Black demographics (Part III: Chapter 8).
  • The Appendices, which include a summary of clinical research on CBT with Black individuals, a table providing descriptions of the ten CBT RESPPECTUS principles, as well as full and abbreviated versions of the Cultural Trauma Scale (CuTS).

The author is a licensed clinical social worker and licensed clinical addictions counselor, as well as a tenured Associate Professor at the Indiana University School of Social Work. Dr. Virgil L. Gregory, Jr. has years of experience providing CBT to Black individuals and has made substantive and innovative empirical contributions to CBT for Black Americans.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy with Black Americans: A Principle and Structurally Informed Perspective addresses a current gap in the professional literature. The book is primarily intended for practicing clinicians and graduate students in the fields of clinical social work, clinical and social psychology, psychiatry, counseling, marriage and family therapy, nursing, and public health. Clinical researchers who conduct or consume research regarding Black Americans will also find the book an invaluable resource.

Gullah-Geechee Diasporas counters romantic portrayals of Gullah-Geechee culture as a static, geographically isolated remnant of the past. Across eight interdisciplinary essays, the book's contributors trace an arc, described in time and space, from pre-Middle Passage Africa through the Caribbean and coastal United States into the interior South and beyond. They consider how Gullah-Geechee cultural traditions are simultaneously rooted in the physical Lowcountry homeland and represent a dynamic cultural ethos that is not bounded by geography and has shaped Black life across North America and the Caribbean Basin. Together, these essays reveal the resilience and adaptability of people whose history defies myths of isolation and immobility. Gullah-Geechee Diasporas is a fresh framework for understanding African American cultural origins, migrations, and transformations.

This probing account shines a new light on the problem of anti-Asian violence and inspires us to build lasting solidarity.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, racist demagoguery fomented a campaign of terror against Asian Americans. But these attacks were part of a much longer pattern that made anti-Asian racism integral to the outbreak of white supremacist, misogynist, and colonial violence across 175 years of U.S. history. Written in the radical spirit of Howard Zinn, American Peril represents the culmination of thirty-five years of study and activism by award-winning scholar Scott Kurashige.

From the lynching of Asian immigrants during the exclusion era to the ongoing slaughter of Asian civilians by the U.S. military, the book connects domestic and global events that have been erased from the official record. Going beyond victimhood, Kurashige traces the rise of Asian American community protest and activism in response to the 1982 murder of Vincent Chin and other overlooked tragedies. While many have worked to legislate and prosecute hate crimes, Kurashige argues that hope lies in grassroots activism for multiracial solidarity.

The responsibilities of speakers and platforms in a world where content can go viral

The debate over free speech is often marked by two extremes: in one corner, those who think that the right to free speech is nearly absolute; in the other, those who defend sweeping prohibitions on harmful speech. In Setting Fire to Reason, Jeffrey Howard rejects both extremes. He argues that free speech is among our most important moral rights, but-like all rights-it has limits, determined by moral duties we owe to each other. Yet exactly how these moral limits should be translated into law is complex, depending on the particular speech regulation at issue and the risks of government abuse.

Using incitement as his central example of harmful speech, Howard sets out an integrated framework of speakers' rights and duties, determining when and why speech restrictions can be justified. In developing this original theory, Howard pinpoints the ethical duties of social media platforms, assesses the role of counter-speech as a weapon against harmful communications, and explores how the law and morality of free speech can and should diverge.

The witch has always been an object of fantasy; an adaptable symbol for the expression of society’s deepest anxieties and dreams. In the magical worlds of medieval-inspired fantasy role-play games, stories of witchcraft (and its persecution) uniquely blend the history, fantasy, and fairy-tale of the witch tradition with video game conventions and cultures. The witch operates as a familiar Other that is simultaneously both real and fantastical.
This book explores how the long tradition of fantasising the witch has been adapted through the popular medium of video games. As the first study of witchcraft representation to examine games, this analysis focuses on the genre where the witch is most prolific ? fantasy roleplay games ? and on three key franchises: The Elder Scrolls, The Witcher, and Dragon Age.
Often seen as quintessentially medieval, the figure of the witch that we know today only coalesced at the end of the western Middle Ages, thriving throughout the Early Modern period alongside movements like the scientific revolutions. The ubiquity of the witch in medieval-inspired fantasy thus reveals less about history and more about our modern desire to relegate the perceived superstition and barbarity surrounding the witch to a comfortably distant past, even while reenacting it on our screens.

With billions now living in cities across an increasingly urban planet, hopes for the future depend on the power of ordinary people to shape urban life. In an era plagued by intensifying inequality, authoritarianism and climate change, residents of cities are facing crises on multiple fronts. In response, people are coming together to find solutions. What does it take for them to change their city for good? People Power in Cities analyzes the strategies people are using to fight for social and climate justice and achieve a greater say in how their cities are run. Highlighting the voices of organizers, activists, thinkers, and movements on the ground, Amanda Tattersall and Kurt Iveson reveal complex ecologies of people struggling for rights to home, dignity, and freedom. They draw from examples around the world, such as the fluid 'be water' tactics used by crowds in Hong Kong, micro-utopia squats in Cape Town, and electoral reclamation of institutions in Barcelona. Unpacking the advantages and limitations of each strategy, Tattersall and Iveson argue against seeing any one as a 'silver bullet' to the dilemmas faced by urban movements. Instead they explore the potential for complementary combinations of strategies like advocacy, protest, organizing, prefiguration and running for office that are too often seen in competition. The result is a people power framework that unlocks opportunities for urban movements everywhere seeking to create change. An essential guide for researchers and organizers alike, People Power in Cities makes sense of the dynamic, interconnected, and insurgent urban moment, helping us seize the opportunities for democratic experimentation available in our cities.

This empirically researched and grounded book presents a learning-systems approach for mass-scalable educational content ultimately intended for use across any language, literacy level, culture, or digital divide. The work here is based primarily on Purdue University's Scientific Animations Without Borders (SAWBO) initiative. Addressing the crosscutting issues of resilience, genders, socioeconomic status, geographic isolation, age, and other important development parameters, it provides one answer to how we (as a global development community) should address these issues to meet the SDGs globally and the good life for people and communities locally. At its core, this is a matter of making timely information available (whether by deliberate searching, word-of-mouth/"viral" redistribution, or even "stumbling" across the information, with or without personalized user-targeting)-in other words, by reproducing how the Internet already socially "works" (while avoiding how it doesn't work) to deliver information in a deliberate, reliable, and measurable way for outcomes, and especially for overcoming "wicked" development problems, attain or surpass the SDGs on-schedule, and open people's access to the good life where they live.
