Never Enough Time discusses the directional and irreversible nature of time, its relationship to information and entropy, the deep time history of communication from the genesis of language to today, and the extent to which we occupy time through our communication.
Drawing together studies from a wide variety of disciplines and topics that provide quantitative estimates of how much daily time is expended communicating and relating to others, the author demonstrates that in an increasingly accelerating, mediated, and information-overloaded ecosystem, we spend most of our time, both socially and occupationally, engaged in various forms of communication. He examines the nature of time in the context of our increasingly overloaded and mediated information and communication ecosystem, the extent to which our increasing screen time displaces face-to-face interaction, and the implications this trend has for our quality and quantity of life, particularly for younger populations. In addition, a case is made for the importance of developing standardized measures of time, made all the more feasible with digital technologies already available for quantifying behavior at population scales.
This book will appeal to graduate students, scholars, and researchers interested in time, communication theory, new media and media studies, and communication and personal relationships.

Engaged public scholarship is transforming the humanities. Divided into four parts, this provocative volume examines historical and contemporary sites of education and pedagogy, challenges dominant narratives about certain symbolic sites in the United States and across the Americas, highlights the struggle of marginalized communities as they wrestle to rewrite individual and collective memories of violence and trauma, and features public humanities projects that address themes relating to place and environment. Each chapter is concerned with the importance of personal relationships in educational settings, power relations in public humanities projects, and the nurturing of "new" civic spaces and places. This volume makes an important contribution to timely debates about public-facing and publicly engaged scholarship, especially in the humanities.

Artificial intelligence (AI) consists of a dazzling set of computational tools that few fully understand. From our cars to our homes to how we socialize and work, AI is everywhere and makes life so much better. It might irritate in some instances but mostly it helps. Or it seems to.
Yet AI developers have an unusually narrow perspective on intelligence, reducing all judgments to a calculus. Machines excel at this form of intelligence, but it is not how most people define the word. While this narrowing has provided useful direction for the development of computers, Richard Harper argues, it also constrains what people are capable of. When we reach for AI to help us unwind, connect with others, or even create art, it's not analytical intelligence that we are after. The human behaviours that AI seeks to supplement are shaped as much by mood, morals, indolence, and interrelation as they are by calculation. Drawing on three decades of inquiry, Harper reveals that when we are misled about what AI cannot do, we fail to see what it can.
The Shape of Thought shows how to break free from this narrow view. By better understanding the many different things that people achieve with computers, we can improve and diversify AI to allow for richer, more beneficial human-computer interaction.

Fifty years of gold mining at Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories spurred northern settlement and produced millions of dollars in profits. But mineral processing also had catastrophic environmental effects and left a troubled legacy.
When two mining companies in Yellowknife began processing gold ore in the 1940s, they did so with little or no pollution controls. Giant Mine spewed thousands of kilograms of arsenic trioxide from its roaster stack into the environment, causing illness and death among people and animals, especially in the adjacent Yellowknives Dene community. Even after the companies installed controls, arsenic trioxide continued to enter the atmosphere and waterways. Eventually Giant Mine, the biggest polluter, would deposit the arsenic dust beneath the mine, leaving 237,000 tonnes of highly toxic material buried underground. For decades, the mining companies and the federal government hid the worst effects of the pollution, doubted their own studies, and resisted calls for action. Yet the Yellowknives Dene fought back with the support of labour unions and environmental groups, questioning the safety of the air and water in their community and the massive toxic deposit underground.
The Price of Gold traces the troubling history of one of Canada's most contaminated sites but also the inspiring story of Indigenous, labour, and environmental activists who resisted the ongoing poisoning of their communities.

As Canada takes stock of its immigration programs, the factors that promote successful settlement have taken centre stage - for researchers, service providers, policymakers, and for the migrants themselves.
Social Resilience and the Urban Migrant Experience explores the conditions and supports that help international migrants thrive, not just survive. Focusing on resilience, chapters examine how immigration status and family dynamics shape migrants' agency and their responses to the inevitable challenges of building new lives. They draw attention to the issues created by societal constructs, while highlighting the resources from social institutions of all types: governmental, professional, educational, and faith-based. Emphasizing the experiences of structurally oppressed migrant groups, contributors note the varied ways that capitalism, as well as class, gender, and race, can contribute to inequality in settlement practices.
Directed at a wide audience of community and government practitioners, policy experts, academics, and civil society activists, Social Resilience and the Urban Migrant Experience illuminates both the impediments to newcomer integration and the ability of newcomers to engage successfully in adaption and resistance.

In The Light of Tabor, award-winning theologian David Bentley Hart proposes an approach to the nature of Christ that is profoundly radical yet deeply classical.
For centuries, Christian theology has rested on a paradox. Beginning with the Council of Chalcedon in the fifth century, the major Christian traditions have held that Jesus Christ combines two distinct natures: he is fully God and, somehow, fully human. Yet this tenet has traditionally invited irresolvable metaphysical contradictions. David Bentley Hart delves deeply into the seemingly irresoluble tensions, providing the first theological attempt to show how the logic of the earliest churches' angelomorphic Christology is continuous with later Chalcedonian orthodoxy. Hart draws on theologians from every epoch of Christian thought, from Origen to Sergei Bulgakov, while making free use of concepts from other spiritual traditions, such as Vedanta.
The Light of Tabor proposes an approach to Christology that is thoroughly monistic, both as regards Being and as regards nature. Hart argues that the only coherent reading of the figure of Christ is one that fully embraces the essential unity of all things divine and natural through him, proposing an approach to Christology that affirms classical doctrine without retaining the dualistic presuppositions that have haunted theology since the age of the great councils.

Being before God offers a thorough account of Cornelio Fabro's Thomistic reading of Soren Kierkegaard's theology, speaking both to systematic theology and Kierkegaard studies.
Italian Stigmatine priest and Thomist philosopher Cornelio Fabro is well known for his work on the metaphysics of Thomas Aquinas. Yet despite also authoring many studies on Soren Kierkegaard, Fabro remains virtually unknown among Kierkegaard scholars outside of Italy. Being before God sheds light on the influence of Kierkegaard's writings on Fabro's Thomism and provides a detailed historical account of Fabro's contributions to Kierkegaard studies and systematic theology. Drawing upon rare archival material, including materials that have never been translated into English, Joshua Furnal speaks to Kierkegaard's relationship to Catholic theology, the Kierkegaardian aspects of Fabro's Thomism, and Fabro's Thomistic approach to Kierkegaard in turn. Being before God also highlights how Fabro's work brings together ideas from both Aquinas and Kierkegaard to broaden the horizon of contemporary theology.
Through his meticulous research, Furnal contends that, despite his lack of modern recognition, Fabro remains one of the most important European interpreters of Kierkegaard in the twentieth century.

Informed by transdisciplinary research in social and environmental justice, Race and Environmental Justice in the Era of Climate Change and COVID-19 is a contribution to the scholarly discourse as well as a form of activism for environmental, climate, and health justice. Using race and Indigeneity as an analytical lens, the book explores how justice in the era of climate change and COVID-19 is envisioned, depicted, and achieved. With a focus largely on humans and environments, its explorations of (in)justice illustrate the wide health and safety gaps between individuals, communities, and even nations living under different environmental conditions. The volume also moves beyond the human toward justice for all beings. This book foregrounds voices from world communities, provides solutions to environmental and health crises, and advances environmental justice.

America's national parks are facing unprecedented challenges. With visitation pressures mounting and the National Park Service struggling to keep up, author and former park ranger Steve Kemp looks toward one exceptionally effective historical example of conservation philanthropy and park building-the collaboration between John D. Rockefeller Jr. and NPS legends Stephen Mather, Horace Albright, and Arno Cammerer.
An Exaltation of Parks reveals the inspiring story of this collaboration, showing how the partnership transformed some of America's most cherished national parks, including Acadia, Grand Teton, Great Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone, and Yosemite. It recounts Rockefeller's lifelong dedication to conservation, digging into his own pockets and toiling as a volunteer to achieve his goals for converting private land into public use. Bringing to life the history and significance of America's most magnificent landscapes, this volume is both a tribute to past conservation victories and a call to action for the future, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance to preserve these national treasures for generations to come.

Marie-Dominique Chenu demonstrates how this once condemned theologian influenced the major shifts of twentieth-century Catholicism and reveals the relevance of his thought for contemporary theology.
In 1942, historian Marie-Dominique Chenu was removed from his teaching position at Le Saulchoir, the French Dominican school of theology, and his groundbreaking new publication was placed on the Catholic Church's Index of Forbidden Books. Yet only two decades later, the Catholic hierarchy embraced many of his ideas at the Second Vatican Council. Although Chenu's pioneering work helped to usher in a new era, his influence on the Catholic Church remains overlooked and underexplored.
Drawing upon extensive new archival research, Mary Kate Holman provides a captivating account of Chenu's life and how his theology contributed to the church's opening to the modern world and shaped the next generation of theologians. Holman presents the distinctive elements of Chenu's theology, identifies his major contributions to contemporary Catholic theology, and proposes a constructive retrieval of his thought for a renewed ecclesiology in the twenty-first century.

The green digital transition is underway. But what does this transition look like when dictated by the energy and resource demands of monopoly tech? How has this situation come to be? And where is it being resisted?
This provocative book uncovers the hidden intersections of land, resource extraction and climate policy in the transition to "greener" and "smarter" economies. Challenging eco-modern and techno-solutionist approaches, the book links narratives of sustainability with colonial histories and uneven development, arguing that tech-driven transitions replicate exploitative patterns of imperial capitalism. Using Ireland as a focal point, the authors show how the history and depth of the country's postcolonial dependency on multinational investment, especially US technology companies, comes into friction with disparate land-based struggles.
Thinking with these movements, the book offers a critique of dependent models of development and proposes an anti-imperialist approach to environmental politics.

This volume identifies and debates important elements of what would be involved in an education that is truly adequate for the environmental situation that currently confronts us. The chapters in the book present a wide variety of perspectives and raise questions about much mainstream environmental education, particularly the heavy emphasis given to science in understanding environmental problems and to technology for solving them. Contributions argue that there are other equally - if not more - important aspects to be considered: notably our underlying attitudes towards nature and the quality of our underlying relationship with it. They raise questions about what we mean by nature and how we come to know it most authentically in its many facets. The overweening anthropocentrism and desire for mastery that informs much of current Western engagement with nature is revealed as stymying our ability properly to recognise nature's intrinsic value and moral standing. Consideration is given to the need for a curriculum in which morality, poetry and myth, art and the humanities have key roles to play and where our understandings of the qualities of time and space that frame the curriculum are refreshed. The majority of the chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Environmental Education Research.

Seasonal Sociology takes a sociological approach to thinking about the seasons, providing a unique perspective for understanding social life. Each chapter in this collection explores key issues of sociological interest through the passage of time and seasonal change. The authors wield seasonality as a powerful tool that can bridge small-scale interpersonal interactions with large-scale institutional structures.
This collection of contemporary Canadian case studies is wide-ranging and analyses topics such as pumpkin spice lattes, policing in schools, law and colonialism, summer cottages, seasonal affective disorder, Vaisakhi celebrations, and more. The second edition introduces new chapters on Labour Day and organized labour, disability and online dating, maple sugar shacks, seasonal agricultural work, wildfires, and social movements like Pride and Black Lives Matter. Seasonal Sociology ultimately offers fresh, provocative ways of thinking about the nature of our collective lives.

Climate change affects all aspects of life, influencing personal lifestyle choices and political perceptions. Beyond legal and political measures, the engagement of individuals and local communities has become essential for necessary systemic change. Understanding the complex human and social dynamics is key to achieving real change, in favour of a resilient and low-carbon future.
This book highlights the theoretical and practical contributions of the social sciences and humanities in understanding how humans perceive and respond to climate change, and the ways in which they can be combined to fight climate disruption and its effects. These interdisciplinary approaches draw upon fields such as communication sciences, linguistics, psychology, anthropology, educational sciences, management studies, and philosophy, to explore the nexus between climate change and human and social dynamics in individual, collective, and political actions.
Drawing on a wide range of interesting case studies, the book highlights opportunities for collaboration between disciplines by combining methodological and theoretical components and synthesizing the research results. Ultimately, the book demonstrates that a more effective collaboration between the social sciences and humanities is required to fully understand the complexities of our relationship with climate change, and to pave the way to a real ecological transition. The book will be of use to scholars, students, researchers, and practitioners interested in communication studies, psychology, linguistics, sociology, philosophy, management, educational studies, transition studies, and connected fields.
