Historic littoral cities and sites of Southeast Asia that grew along the coast, seascapes, and the confluence of rivers as evolvements from Indigenous settlements linked the dynamism of trade and confluence of cultures, have defied categorization and characterization. For the first time, Jahn Kassim and Ibrahim characterize a series of sites whose historic urban-architectural core forms reflect a graded spectrum following past models of Indigenous urbanism and architecture.

Departing from past thematic discussions on historic eco-urbanism, the book present approximately 20 cities, centers and/or subregions that represent these themes and their recurring features, historically and formally condensed based on morphological, urban-architectural, and iconographical patterns and features. The transformation that is prescribed is perceived as insufficient, technocratic, and market-based and does not involve challenging power relations at the heart of climate action. This book addresses these concerns, using a comparative analysis to explore the issues and efficiency of a meaningful sustainable transition. The in-depth comparison of two conventionally dissimilar cases, Turkey and Germany, demonstrates that civil society actors in different political settings can use similar strategies and frames for climate action against state actors. The Rustling Image discusses the aesthetic, philosophical, and political resonances of low-resolution digital images in connection to the popular and wider use of mobile phone cameras through the case study of citizen journalists and political activists during the Syrian civil war.

This book describes the witnessing techniques of low-resolution mobile phone images, focusing on the way in which citizen journalists, activists, and film collectives found alternative means by which to document the Syrian civil war during a special period in media history - that of the western media being mostly unable to obtain access to Syria. Such blurry and pixilated images, which often fail to verify what they are meant to prove, are not simply the result of technological limitations. Rather, they have been embraced as an aesthetic of resistance that seeks to distinguish itself from the clearer and sharper HD and 4K sensibility that characterizes the western hegemonic media corporations' coverage of news events. This book highlights that the role of blurry and underexposed images is to make us aware that there is a category of witnessing whose purpose is to reveal the significance of what is not visible; and to make us understand the sense of uncertainty that we feel towards our own inability to comprehend events that have been spiraling out of control in our post-truth world.

In the 1980s, the arrests of a group of teachers, doctors, and other professionals triggered a wave of protests - the first open resistance against Siad Barre's regime in northern Somalia - helping to pave the way for Somaliland's self-declaration in 1991. This book provides an extensive analysis of that transformative moment, drawing on over 100 oral histories and archival materials, including trial protocols and political poetry.

This fascinating case study demonstrates how resistance that is constructive, non-violent, and caring can spark collective action and change. In 1981-1982 in northern Somalia, doctors, teachers, and other professionals came together to restore a hospital and to volunteer in schools as acts of resistance towards state oppression. Feminist Climate Policy in Industrialised States explores ways in which policymakers can overcome institutional barriers and conventions in pursuit of the radical changes necessary for a gender-just climate emergency response.

In 2021, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change acknowledged that addressing the climate emergency must involve social justice and equality. Feminist approaches to decision-making, policy-making, community organising and their underpinning methodologies can enable this. A comparative analysis of Islamist groups' ideological positioning toward nation-state, secularism, and democracy across different countries in the MENA region.

Authoritarian reassertion following the Arab uprisings in the Middle East has restrained Islamists' political participation and challenged their survival as both opposition groups and rulers. In light of national sociopolitical variations across the region, this book explores Islamists' means of adaptation and resilience in the face of this political exclusion, unpacking Islamists' sociopolitical persistence and ideological sustainability.

In doing so this book sheds light on the following questions: How did Islamists adapt to contextual restrictions in terms of repression and stigmatization? How did the Arab uprisings impact their internal debates, ideological revisions, and reconsideration of tools of action? Individual chapters explore similarities and divergences among Islamist groups and parties in terms of ideological affiliations, means of survival and political participation strategies, drawing on comparative cases from across the MENA region. Apartheid and Fragmented Protest in Contemporary Southern Africa examines protest movements through the lens of Apartheid Studies, the first general theory of apartheid which explores how oppression, harm, injustice, poverty, loss, and inequality persist.

The book argues that apartheid, which breaks the world of the oppressed into fragments, fomenting diverse experiences of oppression among its victims, frames the nature and course of protests by making them subject to its fragmentation. Protest is thus redefined as good neighbourly and demoted on account of its symbiotic relationship to apartheid. It is observed that the proliferation of protests does not preclude the persistence of apartheid. Rather, protest and apartheid are seen to be compatible. In so doing, it offers the first-ever comparative analysis of how African states use internet shutdowns as tools to close civic space, suppress opposition, and maintain power.

Authored entirely by African researchers, Internet Shutdowns in Africa shows how shutdowns are used as a tactic of war, to blackout news of state violence, or to disrupt opposition protests. At the same time, the findings gathered here demonstrate the wide variety of forms these shutdowns take: they can be nationwide or localised; they can target a specific social media platform or website; or they can avoid the appearance of a complete shutdown by throttling connection speeds; and all of these types of shutdowns can last weeks, months, or even years. Ultimately, the book provides a unique comparative assessment of the dramatic economic, social, and political consequences of shutdowns - some intentional and some unintended - as well as on how different demographic groups are affected in very different ways, all of which produces actionable recommendations.

In this important, multidisciplinary, open access study, Daniel Akech Thiong shows that the relations between climate disaster, pastoralist migration, and intercommunal conflict in Africa reach farther, both in time and space, than we realize.

Focusing on the climate-shock-induced migrations of the Dinka people of South Sudan's Jonglei state into the Equatoria region, Thiong investigates the long-term ecological roots of conflicts among pastoralists, or between pastoralists and agriculturalists, over access shrinking waterholes and grazing zones. In so doing, he not only offers important correctives to prevalent, short-term narratives around individual political conflicts-narratives that provide little fodder for any long-term solutions--but also sheds new light on the role of governance, both national and local, in creating or mitigating the conflicts. Thiong in fact reveals examples of unusual cooperation between diverse ethnic groups amidst climate-change-induced disasters, and these findings shed new light on similar developments elsewhere in Africa, all of which offers new lessons for those who wish to mitigate future clashes related to climate-shock-induced displacement and encourage social stability.

The Fatimid caliphs (297-567/909-1171), who were also the Ismaili Imams, reigned over a vast state stretching from North Africa (including Egypt) to Sicily, Syria and the Hijaz. Under Fatimid patronage, the arts and sciences flourished alongside Ismaili thought and literature.

An extensive trade network was centred on their capital, Cairo, facilitating cosmopolitan exchange across their caliphate, the Mediterranean and other lands. This led to innovation in the production of decorative arts, monumental building programmes, international commerce and significant intellectual exchange.

In the wake of decolonial activism in higher education and civil society since 2015 and the larger struggle for equality and justice, Shefer, Rustin, Boonzaier and their contributors draw primarily from the work of local research and pedagogical projects directed at alternative imaginaries of gender and sexual justice, with global import.

Increasingly scholars are engaging in collaborative, dialogical and creative work that foregrounds performance, art, music, crafts, literature, as well as embodied, affective and relational engagements in the making of knowledge. This book examines the history of the press in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir under the British Raj.

Based on extensive archival data, the author meticulously traces and documents the history of freedom of the press, speech and assembly, as well as the restrictions imposed in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir during British colonialism. Structured chronologically, the book presents a historical narrative of the press in the state during the Dogra period (1846-1947) and further shows the continuities during the decade of Partition (1947-1957). It analyses a novel aspect of communication by examining symbolic resources and the communication history of the region. The book sheds light on the significant role of culture as a form of political and mass communication, particularly in the absence of newspapers, bringing forth previously undisclosed aspects to the public domain.
