In the Western cultural production that puts individual or collective fear at its center, East/Central Europe has been portrayed as an othered space of horror - lawless, frightening zones where anything can happen. Incorporating articles on literature, film, visual arts, video games, music videos, and music festivals, Contemporary Slavic horror across media is a pioneering edited collection, devoted to Slavic horror fiction. The volume focuses on works from the mid-20th century through the present, particularly the post-Soviet period. Assessing current trends in Czech, Polish, Russian, Slovak, Ukrainian, and East/Central European horror media, the chapters look at similarities and idiosyncrasies of the genre in its Slavic variant. The book aims to tame 'the Easterner Other' and start exorcising 'monstrous' East/Central Europe.

In this volume, essays are brought together that map the preaching landscape in the late antique Latin West from the perspective of religious education. In Late Antiquity, sermons were the central institution through which religious education was imparted. Each contribution focuses on one preacher and addresses one of four key questions: What role did the Holy Scriptures play in preaching? How were hagiographic texts interpreted in the sermon? How were Christian ethics taught in sermons? And how did dogma enter the sermon? Reflections on current research into preaching and on the role of Augustine for late antique preachers round off the individual studies. Since preaching is highly dependent on its local and historical contexts, the volume collects a variety of perspectives that offering a nuanced picture of the genre of preaching that has shaped Christian communication from Late Antiquity to the present day.

This volume outlines powerful theoretical and methodological approaches for expanding the possibilities of educational research. By illuminating speculative education as an emerging scholarly practice, this collection offers pragmatic guidance for scholarly world-building.

It introduces "speculative education" as a critical and hopeful approach to educational research. Through empirical scholarship, the book describes paradigms of collective thriving beyond the existing horizons guiding research, policy, and practice in educational research. The collection of scholarship here offers visionary and future-oriented approaches to teaching and learning that operate beyond the bounds of current social, economic, and cultural arrangements that perpetuate various forms of oppression. Through specific examples and a collection of thematic interludes, this collection details a framework through which educational researchers and practitioners can enact speculative dreaming. This speculative framework seeks to foreground ethical relations as the basis of civic trust; foster an ethos of collaborative practice as the work of world-building; and engage in joyful struggle toward just futures. Ultimately, this volume highlights how researchers, designers, educators, and individuals linked in community with each other must question the intended outcomes of educational scholarship writ large and if the priors of academic scholarship actually lead toward destinations of freedom. In recognizing the pluralistic nature of speculative worlds that might be built, the possibilities for new educational models and experiences are boundless.

This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of the Learning Sciences.

This Element will focus on the various denominations in the Mormon tradition, collectively sometimes referred to as 'Mormonism.' They include the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as the several sects of Mormon fundamentalism and multiple other denominations. Often described as the quintessential new religious movement, Mormonism is useful for studying the dynamics of new religious formation, evolution, schism, and adaptation to American culture more broadly. It emerged in the heat of the Second Great Awakening, the flourishing of religious creativity and innovation that followed American disestablishment, inspired by the visionary ideas of Joseph Smith, Jr., a New York farmer who adopted a particular style of restorationism, a form of Christianity popular in the period. Since that time, the various branches of Mormonism have embraced different relationships with the broader stream of American culture. Some have sought integration with America's Protestant majority; others have emphasized sectarian distinctiveness.

The globe-trotting tales of five women who fought for the right to enjoy the wild places of the earth.

For millennia the 'wild' was a place heroic men went on epic quests. Women were prevented from joining them, either through physical control or powerful myths about what would happen if they ventured beyond the city wall or village boundary. So how did women claim their place in the remote and lovely parts of our planet?

In Wildly different, historian Sarah Lonsdale traces the lives of five women who fought for the right to work in, enjoy and help to save the earth's wild places. We'll meet Mina Hubbard, who outraged the exploration community when she stepped into a canoe in northern Labrador. Evelyn Cheesman, who became the first female keeper of insects at London Zoo. Dorothy Pilley, who shocked polite society by donning men's climbing breeches. Ethel Haythornthwaite, who helped make the Peak District Britain's first National Park. And Wangari Maathai, who started a movement to plant millions of trees across sub-Saharan Africa.

Drawing on interviews with Sir David Attenborough, Wangari Maathai's daughter and others, Lonsdale recounts the women's adventures across five continents. Evocative and inspiring, this book shows how women can be 'wildly different'.

Material Masculinities examines the material and consumer practices of over 1000 men from the middling and upper ranks of eighteenth-century society, c.1650-1850. It draws upon evidence from over 35 archives and museum collections to detail how material objects were integral for men in forming identities and shaping experiences. For men of all social ranks, ages, and geographic locations, material knowledge was imperative for masculine social identities to operate in a commercial society. Before the centralised factory and widespread mass-produced goods, men personalised and repaired their goods; products were shaped by men's attitudes and concerns. Objects were tools in men's identity formation and the exercise of social and gendered power. There was a reciprocal relationship between men and goods in this period; men were active agents of material and commercial change driving product and aesthetic innovation.

While scholars of ancient Mediterranean literature have focused their efforts heavily on explaining why authors would write pseudonymously or anonymously, less time has been spent exploring why an author would write orthonymously (that is, under their own name). This Element explores how early Christian writers began to care deeply about 'correct' attribution of both Christian and non-Christian literature for their own apologetic purposes, as well as how scholars have overlooked the function that orthonymity plays in some early Christian texts. Orthonymity was not only a decision made by a writer regarding how to attribute one's own writings, but also how to classify other writers' texts based on proper or improper attribution. This Element urges us to examine forms of authorship that are often treated as an unexamined default, as well as to more robustly consider when, how, for whom, and for what purposes an instance of authorial attribution is deemed 'correct.

An engaging history of motherhood, demography, and infertility in twentieth-century France, this book explores fraught political and cultural meanings attached to the notion of an "ideal" family size. When statistics revealed a sustained drop in France's birthrate, pronatalist activists pushed for financial benefits, propaganda, and punitive measures to counter declining fertility. Situating infertility within this history, the author details innovations in fertility medicine, cultural awareness of artificial insemination, and changing laws on child adoption. These practices offered new ways of responding to infertility and formed part of a growing expectation of being able to control one's fertility and family size. This book presents the political and cultural context for understanding why private questions about when to start a family, how many children to have, and how to cope with involuntary childlessness, evolved and became part of state demographic policies.

Teenage Intimacies offers a new account of the 'sexual revolution' in mid-twentieth century England. Rather than focusing on 'Swinging London', the book reveals the transformations in social life that took place in school playgrounds, local cinemas, and suburban bedrooms.
Based on over 300 personal testimonies, Teenage Intimacies traces the everyday experiences of teenage girls, illuminating how romance, sex and intimacy shaped their young lives. The book shows how sex became embedded in ideas about 'growing up' and explores how heterosexuality influenced young women's social lives and vice versa. It offers new explanations of why sexual mores shifted in this period, revealing the pivotal role that young women played in changing sexual values, cultures and practices in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

As a result of the neo-patristic movement of the early twentieth century, the teachings of original sin and atonement as understood in the West were questioned and reformulated based on what was believed to be early Eastern Christian patristic thought. This new paradigm proposed that humanity inherited death and corruption, but not sin, from Adam and that the purpose of the Incarnation and salvific work of Christ was to restore humanity from death and corruption, but not an inherent sinfulness.

In contrast to this popular and seemingly dogmatic paradigm and false dichotomy between Western and Eastern teaching on sin and atonement, this volume asserts that the writings of many Eastern fathers of the early fifth century incorporate many, if not the majority, of the terms and teachings behind what have been labeled as Western departures concerning original sin and atonement. Through a comprehensive analysis of the writings of Cyril of Alexandria and some of his contemporaries in the early fifth century East during the time of the Pelagian controversy, this book demonstrates that a central and consistent theme of their soteriology revolves around the sinfulness and guilt of all humanity that is rooted in Adam's sin by nature and is resolved only through recapitulation into the new root, the second Adam, the impeccable Christ. Christ's impeccability is necessary to correct the state of sinfulness and guilt in humanity through his incarnation and spotless sacrifice on the cross as a ransom and substitute on behalf of and in exchange of all to satisfy the divine justice and to restore humanity to its original state in the divine image.

This book offers a comprehensive study of racialisation of Romani communities in Europe (and beyond). Drawing on the idea of unbelonging it demonstrates how Romani communities are placed in a position of visceral visibility by local, national and international institutions as well as public media discourses. It shows how such positionality impacts the ability of Roma to self-represent politically and build capacity for change. From the position of unbelonging the book offers an account of Romani agency which both challenges the mainstream representations of Roma but also develops an alternative none-nation-state sense of belonging. In doing so the book outlines an account of Romani alternative expressions in order to take control of their relationship with their own history, future, knowledge, and identity, and the rest of the society.

Epitomes, or abridged books, were a constant feature of Byzantine intellectual life and book culture. From epitomes of Greek and Roman historians to medical texts to condensed works of law, epitomes provided professionals and intellectuals with convenient sources of information - or erudition - that met the needs of their post-antique world. This volume, the first to be devoted to Byzantine epitomes, traces the development of the Byzantine epitomizing tradition from antiquity to the fall of Constantinople, while also analysing several key examples in depth. Across eight case-studies, Byzantine epitomes emerge as often surprising products of times of intense intellectual activity.

The first modern English translation of Hugh of Rhuddlan's Ipomedon. The Anglo-Norman Ipomedon, composed in the late twelfth century by Hugh of Rhuddlan, is a witty, notoriously scabrous romance, set in the Mediterranean. In a version of the Fair Unknown motif, the work's eponymous hero, the son of the king of Apulia, falls in love with the queen of Calabria, conceals his identity and serves in her retinue. He undertakes a number of adventures, including participating in a three-day tournament, each day under different colours, before revealing his true identity and marrying her. Alert to the conventions of Arthurian romance from which it pointedly takes ironic distance, Ipomedon invokes the Continental romans d'antiquite in its protagonists' names and in its surprising claim to be the source material for the chronologically earlier Roman de Thebes. It was popular amongst its contemporary readers, being translated later into three different Middle English versions. This book offers the first modern English translation; it also provides explanatory notes, and a full introduction, discussing the author, its audience, dating, sources and analogues, themes, humour and narrative style. It will make this important text, of great interest to medieval romance studies, available to a wider audience.

An account of the revival of Catholicism in Bedfordshire from 1700 to 1900, including a selection of key documents and relevant registers. This volume draws on a range of evidence to illustrate the revival and growth of Catholicism in Bedfordshire between 1700 and 1900. Active opposition to such a revival was only to be expected in Bunyan's county and the volume tells how this was gradually overcome, so that by the end of the period a number of Catholic churches had been well established across the county. Their growth is illustrated by the detailed baptism, marriage and death registers for Shefford (1770s-1850s), Bedford (1860s-1900) and Leighton Buzzard (1890s-1900), that are included and that provide an invaluable source of information about the make-up of the congregations. The account is also enriched by the inclusion of key original documents, correspondence, visitation reports and newspaper accounts. We can also see the contributions made to this growth by national and local individuals, from trades people to members of the nobility, who contributed to the building of a number of local churches and the support of the clergy. The county also became the home of a small diocesan theological college and a nationally recognised boys' orphanage and home. The invaluable work of members of the clergy is examined, along with their contribution to reducing the longstanding anti-Catholicism that had existed across the county. Much remained to be done, but much had also been accomplished.

Humans in the Cyber Loop: Perspectives on Social Cybersecurity addresses the evolving role of humans in cyberspace through an analysis of how digital interactions and advancements both shape and are shaped by societal, economic, and political factors. The book systematically explores social cybersecurity, the impact of disinformation on democratic processes, the influence of social media on public opinion, and the implications of algorithmic decision-making to demonstrate the importance of building societal resilience to cyber attacks and to better understand specific needs and challenges in this domain.

Excerpt from a review by Prof. Danuta Kazmierczak, University of the National Education Commission, Krakow: "The authors treat ... cyberspace as an ecosystem composed of networks of organizations, individuals and technologies, whose dynamics are defined by the multidimensional relationships of these components ... The book contains analyses and examples that allow a greater understanding of the processes, phenomena and mechanisms occurring in societies, created at the intersection of the real and virtual worlds."

Step into the world of 16th-century Castile, where a devout community of Franciscan women preserved the public preaching of their visionary abbess, Juana de la Cruz (1481-1534), through writing. This groundbreaking book uncovers how her sermons were recorded, explores the materiality of the surviving codices, and reveals their role in the controversial censorship and blocking of Juana's canonization. Tracing the rich tradition of the liturgical vision (12th-16th centuries), it delves into female literacy and the creation of collective knowledge in female religious houses around Europe. Featuring rare insights and fresh evaluations of historical texts, this volume illuminates the intersection of female prophetic preaching, community, and the written word at the end of the Middle Ages.

Thoroughly updated throughout, this new edition includes:

  • New chapters on rivalry between fandoms, and needs met by fandom

Offers a nuanced reading of character and subjectivity in medieval romance via an exploration of its conventions. Medieval romances can be characterised by their formulaic motifs, predictable plots, and "stock" figures and character types. This book offers a fresh perspective on these conventions, arguing that authors used them, and the expectations they generate, as a form of shorthand to interiority. Understanding romance conventions in this way reveals that romance characters' complex and often contradictory inner lives are made available precisely through the genre's narrative structures, shapes, and norms. Drawing upon recent work in the History of Emotions and Affect Theory, the author explores character and subjectivity in a variety of English romance texts from 1100 to 1500 - such as Amis and Amiloun, Le Bone Florence of Rome, The Squire of Low Degree, Sir Orfeo, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Malory's Le Morte Darthur. Through new readings of these texts, the book demonstrates the contribution made by romance to the growing significance of the individual in fiction after the twelfth century by paying particular attention to the ways in which convention, expectation, and genre intersect with character-formation and the representation of identity.

How much say should children have in their own education? Through in-depth research in diverse primary schools, Manyukhina and Wyse explore how children's voices and choices shape their learning experiences - and why it matters. This ground-breaking text offers new insights into one of education's most pressing questions: how to balance children's agency with educational standards.

The 40-month research project that is at the heart of the book investigated how England's national curriculum, and other educational structures, affect children's agency. The authors report findings in three contrasting schools: an inner-city primary school, a suburban academy primary school, and an independent school. As a result of in-depth longitudinal research this book uncovers the details of how schools can enable or limit children's ability to shape their learning, from classroom choices and playground decisions to curriculum and school councils.

Children's Agency in the National Curriculum engages with England's national curriculum in the context of curriculum studies and curriculum development internationally. The new findings arise from research that is 'close-to-practice', ensuring that the implications of the work are relevant for children, teachers, and policy makers alike.

The British Royals in Popular Culture examines the intricate relationship between the monarchy and popular culture from the Tudors to the Windsors, illustrating how the institution has persistently adapted to maintain its symbolic, psychological, and theatrical significance over centuries. It underscores the intrigue and authority of the British royals, revealing the fine balance between public visibility and the maintenance of mystique that has been pivotal to their enduring presence.

Popular culture is a powerful lens through which to view the monarchy. As cultural industries have shifted over time, so too has the portrayal of the royals. The British royal family has continually navigated the complexities of celebrity culture. Through curated public appearances and carefully staged ceremonies, the royals have maintained their iconic status, bolstering the monarchy's enduring appeal and cultural significance, while maintaining a mystique essential for ongoing fascination. With the death of Elizabeth II and the coronation of Charles III, this book emphasizes a renewed global interest in assessing how royals occupy cultural and social spaces. It invites readers to critically examine why in a contemporary world, where many sovereigns live largely out of the public eye, the British royals remain a captivating subject of public gaze.

Ultimately, this book highlights how the British royal family has evolved through popular culture, transforming from a historical institution into a global brand. By unpacking the fantasy and reality of the monarchy, it reveals how the royals navigate their roles, maintain their influence, and continually engage with society. In examining how they are fashioned and perceived through various cultural dimensions - from media to fashion, and weddings to state occasions - the text paints a comprehensive portrait of how the British monarchy has persisted through ongoing reinvention and adaptation.

Platforming Cancel Culture: Digital Media, Identity and Cultural Intersections delves into one of the most polarizing phenomena of the digital age. Bringing together global, intersectional, and interdisciplinary perspectives, this edited collection unpacks the evolving dynamics of cancel culture, examining its practices and implications across diverse political and cultural landscapes.

While some hail cancel culture as a tool for social justice, amplifying marginalized voices and calling out systemic inequalities, others critique it as performative virtue signalling or a form of censorship. This book navigates these tensions by analysing the complex interplay of digital platforms and governance mechanisms that shape cancel culture. It explores how platform architectures enable or resist cancel practices, how narratives and media discourses surrounding cancel culture are constructed and contested, and how these dynamics differ across national and cultural contexts.

The contributors engage with cutting-edge research and offer localized insights from a range of contexts-including India, South Africa, China, Southeast Europe, the United States, and Russia-to challenge the universalizing assumptions often made about cancel culture. Methodologically diverse, the book employs sentiment and corpus analysis, digital ethnography, interviews, case studies, and critical cultural studies to provide a multifaceted examination of this volatile site of politics and cultural expression.

By weaving together perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies, Platforming Cancel Culture presents a nuanced understanding of how cancel culture functions as a driver of accountability and a locus of contested power. This collection is an essential resource for scholars, students, and anyone seeking to critically engage with the intersections of digital media, culture, and identity in the 21st century.

This book examines how Cambodian American high school youth reconcile stereotypes, identities, and school opportunities and the ways these factors impact academic achievement and well-being, through ethnographic research.

The backdrop for Cambodian American life is intimately embedded within how Asians and Asian Americans are imagined within U.S. society. This book argues that how Cambodian American students negotiate certain identities are in relation to perceived advantages associated with ethnic and panethnic labels across varying social contexts. It highlights how the embrace of the model minority stereotype can come at a psychological cost for Asian Americans including increased feelings of internalized racism. The chapters draw on ethnographic research collected across two years in one Southern California community. Through students' own meaning-making, it shows readers how Cambodian American youth are simultaneously invisible and hyper-visible in their school and community, which shapes access to important identities and relationships. This work invites interrogation of the Asian American category itself and seeks to move the fields of Asian American and educational studies forward by critically examining not only how the model minority stereotype is constructed and imposed but also how it can be adopted and affirmed by Asian American youth themselves.

Practitioners who work with marginalized and underrepresented students and students of courses such as Asian American studies, anthropology, cultural studies, and education and psychology will find this to be a helpful and enlightening text. The accessible and clear writing makes this book of interest to a general audience as well.
