Brexit has reshuffled the cards of the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union. It is a one in a lifetime event, which ended nearly 50 years of EU Membership. EU law as such no longer applies in the United Kingdom and British citizens and companies no longer benefit from its advantages. Part of the previous regime has however been maintained (at times with amendments) through the series of treaties negotiated between the UK and the EU in 2019 and 2020, in particular the Trade and Cooperation Agreement of 2020, to which the 2023 Windsor Agreement can be added. The end result is a legal regime which is perhaps even more complex than EU law itself. This book aims to provide the reader with a clarification of this legal regime as well as provide context to it and suggestions to improve it. All key topics are covered, such as citizens of the EU in the UK and British citizens in the EU, trade in goods and in services, criminal justice, public procurement, Northern Ireland, the UK overseas territories, the dispute settlement, security and defence, international trade agreements of the UK post-Brexit, environmental protection, European civil justice, financial services, education and research, and the European offices of the UK local authorities and devolved administrations after Brexit. All the chapters follow, wherever possible, the same triadic structure. Marxism has played a foundational role in the development of ecosocialism since its inception and has also led to critical reflections on the 20th century Marxism and ecological interpretation of Marxist writings. Over the last two decades the frequency of humanitarian interventions in Africa has increased. The British military intervention in the Sierra Leonean civil war in the early 2000s is often cited as an example of successful intervention and solidified Security Sector Reform (SSR) as a key component of state-building and development. Yet in-depth analysis of the long-term legacies of this 'successful' intervention are sparse and there remains a notable dearth in research exploring the British involvement from the perspectives of those directly affected. This book provides a novel outlook by exploring micro-level experiences, thus addressing this lacuna through examining the legacies within Sierra Leone and in British foreign policy from an experiential perspective. The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) is used as a framework to draw out implications for global intervention practice, as arguably R2P must also be accompanied by a responsibility to fully understand the legacy of this social phenomenon. By exploring the link between official narratives and the perspectives of those on the ground, a disconnect is exposed and important nuances are identified within the interpretation of the success of the British intervention. Through a critical analysis of these experiences significant questions are raised regarding the dynamics between intervening forces and the affected population; perceptions of legitimacy; accountability; and the implications for R2P more broadly.

Despite the efforts of leading party spokespersons in the UK to marginalise Brexit as an issue of public discussion, it shows no sign of disappearing from the political agenda any time soon. Meanwhile, a significant case can be made for the view that almost regardless of future developments, it will remain a significant issue simply because of the importance of Europe, economically and strategically, to the UK. EU-UK relations are ongoing; therefore, Brexit is a process not an event. For example, the 2021 EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement has established organisational machinery for permanent negotiations on trade and other matters between the UK and the EU and has to be reviewed every five years. Brexit has had significant consequences for the integration of the United Kingdom: consequences that are still playing themselves out through the events surrounding the Northern Ireland Protocol and the prospects for a second referendum on Scottish independence. It has given rise to a lively academic and media debate on the meaning and significance of 'Englishness'. If 'the Brexit experiment' involving the UK's almost complete withdrawal from the institutional frameworks of the EU, comes to be perceived as having been a failure, then there is little doubt that the forces, within the UK, that have never reconciled themselves to Brexit, will grow stronger. The purpose of this book is therefore to assess the strength of these forces and whether a road back to EU membership is likely to be taken any time soon.

This book examines the development of internet policymaking over the last forty years. Drawing on evidence from France and elsewhere, it adopts a sociohistorical perspective to offer insights into the ways democratic states regulate the internet and digital transformation more generally.
