A thorough update of Jerome Frank's groundbreaking work on the science and philosophy of psychotherapy.
In this updated edition of Persuasion and Healing, Julia B. Frank, MD, and Bruce E. Wampold, PhD, examine psychological healing in both scientific and cultural terms, building upon Jerome D. Frank and his colleagues' sixty years of research into the mechanisms of psychotherapy and the nature of therapeutic relationships.
J. D. Frank's insights into the common features of effective psychotherapy shed light on an enormous range of therapeutic activities, from professional care offered by people of diverse training to faith healing, indigenous healing, relief of suffering in medical illness, and other disruptions of people's relationships and core beliefs. This edition applies Frank's scientifically supported, transdiagnostic, humanistic principles to narrative and cognitive behavioral individual and group psychotherapies in both traditional and newer forms. The authors look beyond the bounds of professional services, discussing applications of the principles of psychotherapy that promote resilience in the face of the increasing worldwide burden of mental illnesses and demoralization related to rapid technological change, cultural dislocation, violence, and disasters of many kinds. Therapeutic innovations supported by Frank's work range from the training and deployment of lay mental health workers in low-resource areas to digitally enhanced care.
This classic work is a must-read for anyone dedicated to understanding psychotherapy in all its forms as the application of the compassionate principles of persuasion and healing to the mental health challenges of a troubled world.

Emma Paterson was a pioneer of trade unionism for women. In her short life, she set up a League dedicated to that cause, edited a newspaper to publicise it and travelled the UK working for it. Her spoken and written work addressed issues still with us today, from the gender pay gap to domestic labour, and those thankfully consigned to history, such as whether women should be able to vote or find clothes appropriate to industrial work.
Emma Paterson, Trade Unionist and Feminist, In Her Own Words brings together the major works that comprise Emma Paterson's written output, offering a unique insight into the struggles and concerns of women working in the workshops, factories, shops and homes of Britain's Industrial Revolution. This book includes a long biographical chapter from the editor, a preface from Frances O'Grady, first woman general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, and then an annotated selection of Emma Paterson's most important works, from her time as a young activist to her last days as an overworked editor and union leader.
This book will appeal to scholars and students of the history of Britain, of its women workers, of industrial, labour and publishing history. It addresses broader questions of class and gender, the interconnections that exist between them and the silences that often accompany them.

This volume charts a narrative arc from the liturgical cult of Saint Joseph in the Carmelite Order of Ancient Observance; to Saint Joseph's vital formative presence in Saint Teresa's life and reformed Carmel as father, teacher of prayer, and intercessor in every need; to the Carmelite family as a whole giving liturgical expression to its privileged relationship with Saint Joseph by the establishment of the Feast of the Patronage of Saint Joseph; to this feast becoming widespread outside Carmel and ultimately extended to the Universal Church (1847); and, finally, to Saint Joseph's proclamation as Patron of the Universal Church (1870).
An epilogue considers the absence of Joseph's title "Patron of the Universal Church" in the post-Vatican II liturgical calendar and books, while the papal magisterium has consistently insisted that this patronage is ever necessary for the Church as not only a protection against all dangers, but also an impetus for its mission of evangelization and re-evangelization. An appendix reprints the letter, "Saint Joseph, Patron of Carmel," jointly issued by the Prior General of the Order of Carmelites of the Ancient Observance and the Superior General of the Order of Discalced Carmelites, to mark the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church.

Attending to the historical context reveals the fact that at various moments in the controversy, Augustine was faced with what he believed to be significant threats to Church unity. For example, the beginnings of the controversy coincided with a key attempt in June 411 to end the Donatist schism that had split the African Church for a century: at the very moment when one schism was being healed, another threat to unity appeared in Caelestius and Pelagius.
At the same time, internal evidence in Augustine's anti-Pelagian works reveals his desire not only to refute Pelagian doctrinal views but also to undermine the Pelagians' claims that they were simply teaching what the Church had always and everywhere taught. This can be seen in a particular way in Augustine's frequent appeals to liturgical and sacramental praxis as well as in his rather novel practice of citing renowned Christian authors as evidence for the antiquity and universality of his views.
Augustine in the Pelagian Controversy has two main contributions: (1) it offers a new perspective on Augustine's involvement in the controversy that makes his prolonged and polemical engagement with the Pelagians more intelligible and (2) it provides a detailed history of the controversy itself.

Expansive and practical, Counseling Children and Adolescents offers graduate students the information they need to prepare for work in both school and clinical mental health settings (two CACREP specialty areas). This text includes not only content related to developmental and counseling theories but also information on evidence-based practices across the continuum of care, diagnosis and treatment of youth, and current trends such as integrated care, mindfulness, telehealth, and neuroscience. Unique to this book are sections on both the instructional and behavioral Response to Intervention (RtI) model and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), examples of evidence-based practices used across settings such as Student Success Skills, Check & Connect, and trauma-focused CBT, and a review of common mental health-related disorders most often seen in youth and treatment recommendations. Ethical and legal implications are infused throughout the book, as are CACREP learning outcomes. The new edition uses a trauma-informed and anti-racist lens and fills a gap in counselor preparation programs. A testbank is available to instructors at www.routledge.com/9781032532455.

A cutting-edge neuroscientist and a leading clinical psychologist look to religious, mystical, and mind-altering experience to challenge scientific orthodoxies concerning consciousness.
We are nothing but a pack of neurons, Francis Crick once said. Vladimir Miskovic and Steven Jay Lynn show that this way of thinking is both limited and an obstacle to understanding consciousness. In Dreaming Reality, Miskovic and Lynn connect the latest findings from neuroscience-which studies the brain from the outside in, as a purely physical object-to the insights of the world's mystical traditions, which chart elaborate cartographies of the mind from inside out through experiences of meditation, prayer, and ecstasy. We can tackle the biggest questions surrounding the nature of consciousness when we place objective scientific research alongside the phenomenology of "altered" states.
Dreaming Reality offers a rich synthesis of brains and minds, new and old, that challenges many cherished notions of how we experience our worlds and selves. Instead of privileging the experience of waking life, Miskovic and Lynn take this only as the starting point of a progressive disentanglement of consciousness. Delving into Buddhism, Vedanta, and Christian mysticism, they find that we have much to learn from dreams, hallucinations, visionary states, ego death, mind wandering, sensory deprivation, psychedelic experimentation, meditation, and minimal phenomenal experiences of consciousness.
Each chapter brings us closer to understanding how we dream reality into existence and how we might transcend impoverished materialist models, whose unacknowledged effect is to drive us toward nihilism. Instead, we arrive at a model of consciousness that is more capacious and compassionate than biological sciences alone can imagine.

In the spring of 1994, psychoanalyst-in-training Steven Poser arrived for his clinical internship at one of the last remaining nineteenth-century mental hospitals in New England. Intending to observe and offer compassionate care to the most chronically ill patients, he ended up staying for two years, forming close therapeutic relationships with three female patients suffering from schizophrenia, "Agnes," "Mrs. Lutzky," and "Lucia."
Drawing from his clinical diary, Poser presents his encounters with the women in their own words, each speaking in a poetry of her own invention. Rather than treat the women as casualties of their illness or their words and actions as nonsensical, Poser sees his patients as dignified and struggling people-and not as markedly different from the rest of us as we might think. This is a deeply human book about the frailty and importance of human connection and the intangibly healing force of being heard.

A twenty-plus-year study of former child soldiers offers far-reaching insight into mental health and resilience after extreme trauma.
During the civil war that ravaged Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002, an estimated 20,000 children were forced to join the fighting. As villages were raided and youths rounded up, it was not uncommon for a child to be ordered to kill a friend, relative, or neighbor under threat of being killed themselves. The goal was to make it impossible for the captives to return home and be accepted back into their communities.
But when the conflict ended, many of the children did find their way home. Could they reintegrate after such extreme trauma? Theresa Betancourt and her collaborators in Sierra Leone launched a study of more than 500 boys and girls who had been pulled into the war, tracking them for over two decades. The results were surprising: despite everything they had suffered, this was not a lost generation. In fact, the most dominant trend over time was one of healing and increasing acceptance. The lives of the former child soldiers were shaped not just by their personal ordeals but also, crucially, by the responses of their families, peers, and broader communities. Filled with vivid personal stories, Shadows into Light describes heartbreak and despair but also remarkable triumphs made possible by layers of social support and encouragement.
Betancourt's study provides unparalleled insight into the long-term psychological and developmental effects of family separation, war, and exposure to violence. The lessons go far beyond Sierra Leone's tragedy, suggesting that we should, in general, think of children's risk and resilience more as products of the post-trauma environment than as individual traits.

The first comprehensive study of Jewish children's flight from Nazi Germany to France-and their subsequent escape to America from the Vichy regime
At the eve of the Second World War, an estimated 1.6 million Jewish children lived in Nazi-occupied Europe. While 10,000 of them escaped to Britain in the Kindertransport, only some 500 found a new home in France. Here they attempted to begin again-but their refuge would all too soon become a trap.
For the first time, Laura Hobson Faure brings to life the experiences of these children, and the Jewish and non-Jewish organizations who helped them. Drawing on survivors' testimonies as well as children's diaries, letters, drawings, songs, and poems, Who Will Rescue Us? re-creates their complex journeys, including how some of them eventually found safety in America.
Hobson Faure paints a moving portrait of these children and their escape, uncovering their agency in the flight from Nazism-and knits together the network of the many who aided them along the way.

An engaging guide for cultivating assertiveness to live a happier life.
Confidence and decisiveness are critical life skills that many people struggle to develop. For readers who want to take charge of their lives, The Four Paths of Assertiveness provides an indispensable guide to developing and practicing this crucial ability. Youth advocate Scott Cooper and psychologist Naoki Yoshinaga, PhD, identify four categories of assertiveness-social, behavioral, emotional, and mental-and explain how to hone these skills to live a happier life and develop healthier relationships.
Cooper and Yoshinaga expand the definition of assertiveness to include the core elements of speaking up, jumping in, embracing compassion, and accepting life. Speaking up is critical for standing up for ourselves. Jumping in helps us achieve our goals. Embracing compassion supports us in responding to the universal challenge of suffering, including our own. And accepting life means coping with ups and downs. Each chapter focuses on how to practically develop these four aspects of assertiveness and features tools for how to apply these strategies in everyday life.
Grounded in decades of happiness studies and current trends in behavioral psychology, this guide teaches readers how to live intentionally while staying true to themselves and strengthening their relationships.

As humans, we think in stories-stories that allow us to feel and share emotions. In order for this phenomenon to work, our brains and the ways in which we tell stories must be attuned to each other. But how exactly does this happen?
Tapping into the essence of thinking in stories, Fritz Breithaupt draws on the latest scientific research, including a retelling study (comparable to the telephone game) with more than 12,000 participants, and experiments in which ChatGPT functions as storyteller. This wide-ranging study includes analyses of political history, novels, fairy tales, and everyday office gossip; proposes a new theory of narrative that focuses on emotions and affects; and hypothesizes on the evolution of narratives among our hominid ancestors. Redefining us as beings who anchor ourselves in the world through narratives, Breithaupt introduces a new kind of psychology that cuts to the core of how and why humans feel the need to tell stories.

This illuminating volume explores the often-overlooked relationship between college student activism and well-being, drawing on a multi-phase study that explores college students' perspectives on how their activism impacts their well-being.
Based on a study of 119 US college students, the authors share their findings through a constructivist, qualitative lens, revealing three key themes: The link between student activism and students' identities, the non-negotiable time costs of activism and associated burnout, and the ways that students and higher education can benefit from a different way of considering university and community care. With scholarship exploring the connections between college student activism and well-being still nascent, this book pioneers a fresh understanding of the intersection between student activism and well-being, amplifying authentic student voices throughout and offering practical recommendations for student support. Through a combination of personal narratives, data analysis, and expert commentary, it explores what inspires college student activists to work to create a more just and equitable society, as well as the prevalence of burnout and the tools students use to mitigate their struggles and improve their own well-being.
This book will be suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students as well as scholars, practitioners, and professionals in the larger higher education and social justice community.

Grappling with Monuments of Oppression provides a timely analysis of the diverse approaches being used around the world to confront colonial and imperial monuments and to promote social equity.
Presenting 12 interdisciplinary, international case studies, this volume explores the ways in which the materiality of social domination can be combated. With contributions from activists, scholars, artists, and policymakers, the book envisions the theme of restorative justice in heritage and archaeology as encompassing initiatives for the reconciliation of past societal transgressions using processes that are multivocal, dialogic, historically informed, community-based, negotiated, and transformative. Arguing that monuments to historical figures who engaged in oppressive regimes provide rich opportunities for dialogue and negotiation, chapters within the book demonstrate that, by confronting these monuments, citizens can envision new ways to address the context and significance of the figures they memorialize and the many people who were targets of their oppression. Contributors to the book also provide a toolkit of methods and strategies for addressing the continuing structures of social domination.
Grappling with Monuments of Oppression will be essential reading for academics and students working in heritage studies, archaeology, anthropology, material culture studies, landscape analysis, and museum studies. It will also be of great interest to practitioners and activists around the world.

This book offers a comprehensive survey of burial practices in the ancient Levant and challenges some of the assumptions behind previous attempts to find a normative burial practice.
Exploring the dazzling variety of ways in which the living deal with the dead, this book utilises big data projects and legacy data to highlight the sheer diversity of burial practices in the ancient Levant. Theorizing that some types of burial are significantly underrepresented, this volume argues for the necessity of analysing both the existing and non-existing data at multiple scales of analysis. Thus, rather than attempting to identify a 'normative' or 'typical' burial, the volume highlights the multitude of ways in which the living approached and interacted with the dead across the ancient Levant, from the Late Chalcolithic to the Iron Age (fifth to first millennia BCE). In doing so it acknowledges and foregrounds variability, not only in terms of so-called 'atypicality', but also in terms of burials and practices that have been mistakenly lumped together in the drive to produce narratives of similarity and normative behaviour. This volume also explores some of the broader patterns and temporal/spatial shifts that shed light on wider changes in the ways in which humans perceive(d) of the dead and themselves (the living) over time.
While predominantly focused on the modern regions of Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria, this book also engages with these broader themes across Western Asia and the Mediterranean, adopting an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approach to understanding temporal and spatial variability. This book is of relevance for students and researchers of Ancient Western Asia, as well as those of the archaeology of death and burial.

This volume explores the enduring presence and participation of the dead in the lives of premodern people from the Carolingian period to the end of the Middle Ages.
Unlike modern states, which erect barriers to separate the dying and the deceased from their families, friends, and associates, premodern societies in western Europe fostered an on-going relationship between the living and the dead that was mutually beneficial to both parties. As these studies show, the dead had many means at their disposal to communicate their needs and disaffection, including ghostly visitations and unquiet corpses. For their part, medieval authors told stories about the fate of the dead and the geography of the afterlife to dissuade sinful behaviour and foster virtue in preparation for the Last Judgment. Premodern hauntings also serve as a useful metaphor for the uncertainty of archival research in recovering past voices and for the racial presumptions that inform our reconstruction of the western Middle Ages.
This book will appeal to scholars and students of history and literature, especially those interested in the concept of death in the medieval period. The chapters in this book were originally published in the Journal of Medieval History.

How short-term college and university leaders, overwhelmed by the tyranny of the urgent, compromise the success and future of their institutions.
Amid mounting institutional pressures and a rapidly changing higher education landscape, leadership churn at colleges and universities represents a major roadblock to institutional success. In Leading across the Arc of Time, college president Mark L. Putnam presents a vital road map for navigating the complex dynamics of managing colleges and universities amid continuous change. This insightful work reveals the paradoxes of higher education-where innovation collides with tradition and where the pace of societal demand outstrips the capacity for institutional response.
Institutional stability requires a focus on long-term trends rather than short-term solutions and temporary interventions. Putnam articulates a vision for adaptive leadership grounded in a profound understanding of historical patterns and organizational theory. The book challenges administrators, trustees, and policymakers to embrace the slow, often frustrating process of assimilation as the pathway to meaningful change. The future of higher education depends not on rapid transformation but on thoughtful, incremental adaptation.
Putnam seeks to disrupt the current pattern of churning in leadership, planning, and decision-making that plagues many institutions and to break through the rigidities of conventional wisdom and conformity that confine leadership action. For those committed to the future of academic institutions, this book is an indispensable guide that equips leaders with the insights and creative solutions to guide their institutions with foresight and wisdom.

Philosophical Foundations of Psychotherapy promotes a critical understanding of the ideas, traditions, values, and principles that inform and shape - for better or for worse - what therapists do.
The book challenges the unhelpful misconception that philosophy is for philosophers alone, because human reality is too complex for therapists to be unaware of the foundations, difficulties, and contradictions within our value systems, ethics, and assumptions. By retrieving attitudes from other times and other places, traversing the relational contours of history right up to contemporary thinkers and practitioners, the author argues that not only do relationships heal, but they offer the only safe harbour in life's sea of troubles. He promotes a conscientious radical relationality, which remains attentive to its influences, including contemporary debates about our neoliberal selves, the superstructures of culture, and the ethics of authenticity. In stepping back from the sometimes- narrow concerns of our therapeutic methods, the book explores broader themes important for living well: what is the good of therapy, how do we reconcile our sense of futility in the face of an indifferent universe, postcolonial debates, responses to disembodied artificial intelligence, and alternatives to our human- centred stance towards Nature.
This book is primarily for practitioners, trainees, and educators, but ultimately it is intended for the greater good of clients and those interested in what therapeutic practices and practitioners have to offer. It will also be useful for those teaching research methods, the practice of research supervision, reflexivity, and personal development, across all areas related to mental health.

"First-rate. . . . A sterling example of historical revisionism."-Publishers Weekly
From plebeians refusing to join the Roman army to bakers withholding bread, this is the first book to explore how Roman workers used strikes, boycotts, riots, and rebellion to get their voices-and their labor-acknowledged. Sarah E. Bond explores Ancient Rome from a new angle to show that the history of labor conflicts and collective action goes back thousands of years, uncovering a world far more similar to our own than we realize.
Workers often turned to their associations for solidarity and shared identity in the ancient world. Some of these groups even negotiated contracts, wages, and work conditions in a manner similar to modern labor unions. As the world begins to consider the value-and indeed the necessity-of unionization to protect workers, this book demonstrates that we can learn valuable lessons from ancient laborers and from attempts by the Roman government to limit their freedom.

"With sensitivity and assiduous research, [Franklin] constructs a vivid cultural history that advocates for a reevaluation of Frank."-New Yorker
"Trenchant. . . . An essential look at the diarist's legacy."-Publishers Weekly
In this innovative biography, Ruth Franklin explores the transformation of Anne Frank (1929-1945) from ordinary teenager to icon, shedding new light on the young woman whose diary of her years in hiding, now translated into more than seventy languages, is the most widely read work of literature to arise from the Holocaust.
Comprehensively researched but experimental in spirit, this book chronicles and interprets Anne's life as a Jew in Amsterdam during World War II while also telling the story of the diary-its multiple drafts, its discovery, its reception, and its message for today's world. Writing alongside Anne rather than over her, Franklin explores the day-to-day perils of the Holocaust in the Netherlands as well as Anne's ultimate fate, restoring her humanity and agency in all their messiness, heroism, and complexity.
With antisemitism once again in the news, The Many Lives of Anne Frank takes a fresh and timely look at the debates around Anne's life and work, including the controversial adaptations of the diary, Anne's evolution as a fictional character, and the ways her story and image have been politically exploited. Franklin reveals how Anne has been understood and misunderstood, both as a person and as an idea, and opens up new avenues for interpreting her life and writing in today's hyperpolarized world.

A Roman commander's comprehensive history of Rome.
The histories of Velleius Paterculus chronicle the story of Rome and Roman culture from the fall of Troy to AD 30. Although his work's title, proem, and opening chapters are lost along with the narrative from Romulus to the Battle of Pydna in 168 BC, Velleius provides much valuable information, especially about the reigns of Augustus and Tiberius (30 BC-AD 37), for which he provides our only extant historical depiction by a contemporary witness. Velleius was also an active participant: after service under both emperors as a military tribune in Thrace, Macedonia, Greece, and Asia Minor and as a cavalry officer and legatus in Germany and Pannonia, he joined Tiberius at his triumph in AD 12 and became praetor in 15, after which he seems to have retired from public life except for meetings of the senate.
Much like his near-contemporaries Cornelius Nepos (LCL 467) and Valerius Maximus (LCL 492, 493), Velleius adopted for his work a condensed and selective format, but his style is richly literary and he allows himself to digress when themes or topics seem especially interesting or significant: these include literature, rhetoric, culture, chronology, and dating, as well as individual Roman towns, colonies, and provinces, about which he was richly informed through firsthand familiarity with Rome and much of the empire along a vast arc that stretched from the Elbe to the Euphrates.
This edition of Velleius Paterculus, which replaces that of F. W. Shipley, offers a new translation, ample annotation, and a freshly edited text.
