Using a blend of global, intellectual and cultural history, this book explores the geopolitics of Juan Peron and their relationship to, and impact on, the international history of the mid-20th century. Beginning with Peron's formative years, it analyzes the concepts that helped shape his anti-imperialist views and traces these ideas over decades from his time in the Argentine Army through his rise to power, downfall, and eventual death in 1974. Dissecting how notions of imperialism, nationalism and decolonization fueled his ideology and approach to foreign policy, Juan Peron's Anti-Imperialist Geopolitics takes a long-term approach to understand his geopolitical evolution over time.

While Peronism has continued to be an influential movement in Argentine politics and remains a lively research topic, Peron's geopolitics have received scant attention despite their significance to his popularity and legacy. This book offers a corrective to this, situating Peronism, Argentina, and Latin America on the international stage during the 20th century. From his pioneering role in the era's anti-imperialist solidarity movement, his expansion of the Peronist development model to a global model and his efforts to establish a post-imperial world through the Non-Aligned Movement, Juan Peron's Anti-Imperialist Geopolitics argues that Peron merits recognition as a leading 20th-century geopolitical thinker.

The essays in this volume explore the myriad ways in which caste (varna and jati) has been theorized and critiqued in multiple philosophical, religious, logical and narrative traditions in India. In this open access book, Hassan Ould Moctar offers an original analysis of the European Union's tendency to extend its border and migration control operations into the Global South. Rather than approaching this "border externalization" in analytical isolation, he details how it relates to history and social relations in the West African state of Mauritania. The political concern with policing "irregular migration" emerged relatively recently in Mauritania as a result of EU policy cooperation. But as Ould Moctar shows, it intervenes within a deeper historic arc of colonial bordering and racialized population management, while also upholding capitalism's tendency to cast people out of its development. To trace how this plays out in practice, he offers fine-grained ethnographic accounts of the conditions of migrant workers who have come up against the violence of externalisation at various points in their trajectories. By tying these narratives to equally formative experiences of urban informality and rural dispossession, he demonstrates how the EU border regime intervenes within a colonially inherited framework of racialized territorial belonging and capitalism's wasteful dynamics in the Global South.

Throughout the book, the author explores how human practices over time have had devastating effects on marine life and continue to have so today. The book engages with the marine world through underwater ethnography to provide a perspective on water from below the surface. In this endeavor, it tracks marine scientists and trash scuba divers who are jointly invested in tracking human maltreatment of water and finding solutions for treating water differently in the future. It follows the scientists on expeditions at sea and to their laboratories in order to learn about their methods and relations to underwater worlds. Together with the trash scuba divers, we will dive into the dark murky waters around Stockholm-experiencing what it is like to move below water, among sharp and toxic waste, without any visibility. The work of creating a knowing and caring relationship between humans and water is of key importance to both scientists and divers. Therefore, one of the main parts of this book is to analyze how, and if, this relationship can be created: via social media, images, installations, or other means.

?This work analyzes carnival in Rio de Janeiro through the irreverent view disclosed by the illustrated Brazilian magazines Fon-Fon! and Careta. For such purpose, texts and illustrations elaborated by great names in caricature and literature were used, as well as by journalists who remained anonymous due to the fact that their chronicles and articles did not carry their signatures. The way in which carnival was dealt with in said publications, was intimately related to the world view which intellectuals enjoyed, the Belle Epoque, and to the readers of these magazines: the urban middle classes and part of the elite. To understand both the view and the type of humoristic approach used, songs and the works of chronicle writers, memorialists and historians who worked on the theme were also investigated. At the end, what could be verified through the study of these publications was the importance that carnival enjoyed in the lives of those men of letters and brushes, and how relevant was the counterpart which they made possible not only to readers, but also to us, historians.

Through these publications, it is possible to redeem and reconstruct part of the history of carnival as well as understand the context of the period, political problems, stylishness, innovations and changes in the lives of Rio de Janeiro (carioca) dwellers. So much attention to the theme from the illustrated press denotes the importance of carnival to the financial health of newspaper companies, since the subject and its well-humored approach pleased readers, besides showing that not only did those writers and artists write about the festivities in an irreverent manner, but they also actively participated in them as carnival merrymakers, and therefore they were, themselves, artificers of that history.

This book addresses the limitations of dominant ways of thinking about and doing politics in Northern Ireland. Arguing for the foregrounding of anti-sectarianism as a way of displacing the divisive dynamics of religion and nationalism, it provides a new lens for studying Northern Ireland. Drawing upon a close reading of the political philosophy of Jacques Ranciere, the book aligns anti-sectarianism to the ways that people refuse affiliation with the traditional ethnic values and practices.
